“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.” — Steve Jobs

CABIN, HCL CORPORATE OFFICE

HCL CORPORATE OFFICE, GREATER NOIDA

OUR HISTORY Hardeep and Amit Gupta started vis à vis in 1997 after experience in the world of advertising and market research. In a bold step, they launched the first design management company focussing on promoting design amongst the Indian community. This company curated architecture and design events along with managing a portfolio of professionals and initiated organised retailing of design products created by Indian designers, gaining global and pan-Indian acceptance.

Area: 41,000 sq ft Location: SEZ, Greater Noida Architect: RKA Architects

Using the knowledge gained and connections made in that first venture, 10 years ago, vis à vis moved into a nascent lighting industry, which today has grown in leaps and bounds. Driven by passion, integrity, commitment and creativity in a short span of 10 years, vis à vis India Pvt. Ltd., has become one of the leading companies providing integrated lighting and specialized outdoor décor & lifestyle solutions.

THE JOURNEY SO FAR

AMBIO, WALDMANN

vis à vis has always strived to create a differential and set new benchmarks in all its endeavours from business philosophy and vision to values and strategies. Relationships and partnerships are of prime importance in everything that vis à vis undertakes.

Hindustan Computers Limited is a global IT Enterprise that operates from 31 countries. Its head quarters based in Greater NOIDA recently expanded to accommodate the ever-growing company and its team. This office houses the founders of the company working in adjunction with the team. Keeping true to its ideology, the vision for this office was to create a space that is up-to-date on design, material and technology. The approach had to be human centric and ensure the best environment for the people to work in.

This has led to a growing understanding among audiences about the importance of lighting; today vis à vis is proud to work with a large range of clients from real estate, hospitality, retail and even from the work and residential environment. A large contribution has been made by vis à vis in making these audiences appreciate how lighting plays a critical role in spatial articulation. vis à vis is known in the industry as a brand that has decided its own charter, its own course and left the rest of the industry to follow in its wake. It was the first architecture and design management company curating architecture shows and the first to bring in lifestyle brands like Alessi to India and aims to always be a leader driving the industry forward. The vis à vis approach to studios is yet again industry-leading and unique. In vis à vis Delhi and Mumbai experience centres, simple installations in context can be perceived and imagined by consultants allowing them to think about how their own spaces can be articulated. This was the first move away from just selling boxes of luminaires. The spaces have no extra frills, no jazz, just clean neutral backgrounds to evaluate the lighting and outdoor living science and aesthetics. In 2009 vis à vis took it upon themselves to promote yet another important aspect of style and living... outdoor living. Since then vis à vis has been translating the idea of 365 days of living in the industry and raising awareness about the important role landscape plays in people’s lives.

WALLWASHER, ERCO LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

ERCO lens wallwashers and spotlights render Vertical Illuminance providing a brighter impact in quadra height zones, cabins and reception, also contributing to ambient luminescence with high visual comfort. Evenly lit passageways, with uniformly washed artworks allow visually appealing transition from one space to the other. Task lighting is provided by the German engineered Waldmann Floor Lamps. Waldmann’s patented ‘AMBIO’ diffusers ensure optimised light output and minimized glare, combining direct/ indirect illumination.

design : an experience : a new destination

The classic PH Artichoke in Glass from Louis Poulsen, puts on a signature of ultimate class and understated style in the main lobbies that also form a part of the facade.

Looking ahead, vis à vis want to yet again push the boundaries of the design industry. The new centre in Delhi is the start of yet another ground-breaking move for vis à vis. As the largest application centre in the world, not only does the space showcase the latest in lighting technology and outdoor living solutions but also shows them in innovative and creative ways designed to inspire the viewer. The aim is to provide a space where architects and interior designers can come to understand lighting technology and experience the concepts first-hand in a customized setting. In addition, 3,000sq ft of the 14,000sq ft total indoor space is dedicated to architecture and design gallery to host a range of design events. This space would be a catalyst in bringing together great minds from the art, design and architecture industry. The first show, ‘Design as Social Capital’, showcases 50 global minds and their contribution to socially responsible design with a unique exhibition and discussion. With this event, vis à vis introduces the space to the industry and opens it up for further events planned for the future. The centre has been created to be a true design destination where the whole design community can come to experience the best in art, design and technology..

RECEPTION, DSP DESIGN OFFICE

PH ARTICHOKE GLASS, LP

DSP DESIGN OFFICE Area: 6,000 sq ft Location: Worli, Mumbai Located in the prime locale of Mumbai, DSP’s new office is in every aspect the abode of creativity, detail and the best in technology. Every zone, starting right from the Reception, walking into the meeting rooms through passages, engages in an element, lit to enhance perception and maintain visual comfort. Public zones are high on aesthetics demonstrating the team’s experience in handling varied interior techniques and challenges. Work zones are high on function, built to optimise productivity and convenience. Lighting has been planned on the three principles of balancing comfortable ambience, highlighted accents and a layer of scenic lighting through unique decoratives. Visual hierarchy and appeal created by the right use of tools from Deltalight, Lucifer Lighting and Waldmann make this office stand apart from a ‘typical’ workspace. Decorative Lighting from Kundalini.

THE ART OF LIGHTING ART “Art will remain the most astonishing activity of mankind born out of struggle between wisdom and madness, between dream and reality in our mind.” - Magdalena Abakanowicz The starting points for the lighting of any art gallery/museum are to achieve clear object form, content and accuracy of colour and dimension whilst conserving art with the passage of time. In the history of lighting, art galleries have been the forerunners of advanced solutions. Successful gallery lighting differs from any other type of lighting design because gallery objects are unique and ever changing. What is also critical is incorporating both daylight and the diverse technology of artificial lighting when designing the space. Daylight is not only a lighting medium but also a visual connection between the interior and the exterior. FLEXIBILITY in design is the most important aspect in lighting of an art gallery or museum. Not only the format of art works are varied, the galleries and curators change their shows regularly and each show demands a different solution. Therefore, choice of lighting tools and design intent needs to mind the ever changing visual perception of the space. "For me, flexibility in the lighting for art is the most crucial thing. Different art works need different types of lighting, but also artists like to create environments for their works through lighting, so no two exhibitions should ever be lit in exactly the same way." Says Peter Nagy, founder NATURE MORTE, the leading art gallery for promoting experimental and contemporary art in India.

HOSPITALITY

5 DUSIT DEVARANA, NEW DELHI

One must note, Flexibility is not confined to rotation and tilt of the Luminaire alone. Flexibility in art encompasses:

Dusit Devarana is an uber luxury urban resort located between New Delhi and its elite corporate neighborhood Gurgaon. This resort is the first of its kind and is an ideal destination for both the weary corporate elite and leisure traveller alike.

- Different beam angles, right from Narrow 6Deg spot to Medium Beam, Oval Beam and uniform wall wash, achieved all from similar fixtures, with the advantage of interchangeable modular reflector system. - Adaptability to different lenses & accessories like the ‘sculpture lens’ that elongates an otherwise round beam, spread lens, softec lens, warm tone lens, colour filters, antiglare louvers and spill controlling barn doors. - Tools must be individually dimmable with inbuilt potentiometer so that all spots can be dimmed individually. - Three circuit tracks are a must combined with luminaires equipped for maximum tilt and rotation

The architecture of the hotel is reminiscent of the time of the Raj and well thought out façade lighting harmonises beautifully with the grand pillars giving guests a feeling of luxury before even entering the building. The directed illumination of the pillars throughout the resort highlights their grandeur and ensures the same feeling of luxury continues. The arrival court leads to a domed reception area juxtaposed with stained glass, stone and steel filled with interesting viewscapes.

Successful gallery lighting is that which considers the interactive impact of lighting on gallery occupants, artifacts and the environment.

Ambient lighting with clever accenting of the architectural features creates additional layers and gives a feeling of calm.

ERCO, one of the most revered lighting companies from Germany, made its first breakthrough in the Indian art scene in collaboration with vis à vis, by lighting the first ever professionally lit art gallery in India, that is BODHI ART GALLERY in Mumbai. A perceptual difference, an experience and its true merits were appreciated by almost every artist, curator and gallery owner across the country leading to projects such as The Lalit Kala Delhi, Nature Morte Delhi/ Gurgaon, Chemould Mumbai, Pallatte Delhi, The Stainless Delhi, CSMVS Mumbai, the Kochi Muziris Biennale, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art Delhi and The Hermes Gallery Mumbai.

NATURE MORTE, NEW DELHI LIGHTING RETAIL SPACE Project: The Flagship Store, Raymond Location: Warden Road, Mumbai Architect: Raj Wilkinson Raymond launched its Flagship Store in Mumbai marking the opening of its 650th store in India. Located on the posh Warden Road, right opposite Breach Candy, this store is a representation of Raymond’s growth and positioning as the largest brand to dress up Indian Men. Using Spotlights from ERCO , double height spaces are segmented and lit for the right colour rendition, in the right colour temperature and with defined focus that orients the shopper around the merchandise. Quintessence Lens Wallwashers and LED Directional Spotlights illuminate the large array of merchandise on display. ALDABRA shelf lighting products bring hierarchical contrast to the accessories placed in glass showcases.

RAYMOND AT WARDEN ROAD, MUMBAI

The store is aimed to attract, invite and retain.

Guests’ rooms present a haven of comfort with warm materials and colours all perfectly illuminated with discreet general and accent lighting. There are three restaurants to choose from in the hotel, each distinct with their own design identity suited to the style and origins of the individual cuisines. Eating al fresco in the Kiyan restaurant serving the very best in world cuisine is a charming experience. The reflection of the illuminated pillars in the water promotes that same feeling of luxurious calm as when the guest first arrives. Soft, warm light mimics that of candlelight complimenting the candle lit tables adorning the terrace and adding another atmospheric layer. Luminaires: ERCO, ALDABRA, ROBLON, Lucifer Lighting, Castaldi, Louis Poulsen.

TRENDS 2013 -14

“In all things of nature there is something of the marvellous.” — Aristotle

COLOUR ME LOVELY Adding colour into your outdoor space is a great way to add warmth and character as well as to add your own personal touch. Every year designers are drawn to some colours more than others and you can see these colours running throughout their collections. This year, the colours popping out of the spectrum are Blue and Fuscia. Adding colour can be as per your preference, whether it is for a solid colour or about adding accents to your space.

ECO-FRIENDLY Another big trend is eco-friendly. Top designers have been working on the development of materials which are perfect for the outside space and safe for the environment eg: 1) Materials such as woods originating from sustainably-managed forests and non-toxic finishing treatments 2) CANAX: a unique combination of hemp fibre and polyester, a patented material by Tribu. 3) Aluminum is strong, durable, flexible, impermeable, light, corrosion-resistant and 100 percent recyclable.

OASIS, RODA

OUTDOOR LIGHTING ACCESSORIES Outdoor lighting accessories are among some of the really exciting trends happening this season.

FLEX, PAOLA LENTI

What’s exciting is that there are so many different lighting styles and effects to choose from whether you want rustic candlelight around your dining table or eye-catching flames by the pool. There really is a myriad of products to choose from whether it is candle holders, decorative lamps or torches, all you need to do is decide what style you’re after!

VIS A VIS, TRIBU

NOT JUST WICKER

At a time when our cities are growing and multiplying across the world, when our lives are getting busier and more stressful, there has never been more of a need to enjoy our outside space and get back to nature. It gives us a place to relax, a place to socialise or a place to simply be. However, being at one with nature doesn’t always have to mean packing up the car, travelling to the middle of a forest and camping out under the stars. It can be as simple as reading a book under a tree, lounging by the pool or dining al fresco with friends. It’s important to create a space where you feel comfortable, where you feel one with nature. Our brands and designers have been inspired by nature for years and have created some beautiful pieces to help people utilise their outside areas better. The furniture shouldn’t simply be placed outside but should truly belong outside. Using natural materials or designs inspired by nature, there are a plethora of options to choose from so you can create your own way to belong.

TROPEZ, GANDIA BLASCO

STORK, RODA

Gone are the days when everyone had the same wicker outdoor furniture in their gardens. The industry has grown and technologies have advanced, so designers are now able to create signature pieces using quality materials transcending the indoor and outdoor spaces. It’s now possible to find outdoor furniture made from wood, stone, ceramic, metals and fabrics, all of which have been carefully researched and tested to be high on endurance and low on maintenance. So why just stick to the common…?

“In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present. “ - Sir Francis Bacon

“Daylight is too easy. What I want is difficult, the atmosphere of lamps or moonlight.” - Edgar Degas

Light is one of the most important artistic mediums and can change our entire perception about a space, a colour, a time of day. When designing an outdoor space, you are vulnerable to the ever-changing light and need to consider how the space is going to evolve as the day progresses. Choose interesting outdoor furniture that will allow you the flexibility to use your outdoor space as a versatile part of your home to relax, dine or entertain.

Why stop when the sun goes down? The end of the day is no longer the end of enjoying your outdoor space.

Don’t let the sun scare you indoors, beautiful pergolas and parasols protect from the sun when its rays prove too much and can also add a splash of colour to your garden and outdoors.

Your outdoor space effortlessly transforms to suit your lifestyle with the setting of the sun and rising of the moon. Benefit from the flexibility of your outdoor furniture and allow yourself to continue the same activities as you did during the day without restriction.

SEATING - BASKET & LAWRENCE, RODA

Pergolas that protect from the sun during the day transform into a romantic setting at sunset and allow you to relax in comfort in solitude or with company.
