FOREWORD
LIMITED DOMESTIC MARKET, INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGES
Today, the Swiss Avionics, Security and Defense Industry contains around 100 companies, larger enterprises as well as SME‘s, subsidiaries of large multinational corporate groups, companies whose activities are dedicated to armament completely or to a large extent, companies with strategic business in armament as well as in other areas, companies acting as suppliers to domestic and foreign OEM‘s with production of all sorts of equipment, assemblies and parts (often dual use), provision of special processes and various engineering services etc. The so-called “SWISS-ASD” Industry offers more than 10,000 valuable positions for engineers, scientists and qualified professionals, including a wide range of apprenticeship programs.
Bruno E. GIGER
President SWISS-ASD, The Aeronautics, Security and Defence Division of Swissmem
A stable domestic market is highly important for the progress and the development of valuable ASD industry jobs. It is imperative, that the Swiss industry is able to participate substantially in the annual armament program of the Swiss Army. But the local market is very limited and wavering demands are a fact. Export can compensate for these ups and downs - or much better - enable substantial growth. An important prerequisite for the advancement of export is success in the domestic market. SWISS-ASD companies fight for the right to sell their products, services and military equipment abroad, based on fair and transparent export laws, similar to those of our neighboring countries, in other words: “A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD WITH EUROPEAN COMPETITORS”.
Apart from the limited local market and the restrictive export law, the high labor costs, the unfavorable exchange rate of the Swiss Franc against USD & EURO and the non NATO membership are major handicaps for the export market as well. Of course, there are also some very strong points speaking for the Swiss industry: the latest technologies, a high degree of innovation, excellent quality, on-time delivery and the proverbial reliability.
Another significant and necessary enabler for the domestic industry is Switzerland’s offset policy, the industrial participation (direct and indirect) program in huge armament procurements (e.g. Fighter Aircraft replacement). Capable Swiss companies and research institutes get a chance to capture new market domains, to participate in technology transfer and enter into long-term foreign business relations, exceeding the volume of contractual offset obligations. Although, Switzerland’s offset policy offers local companies many opportunities, but it does not guarantee a piece of the pie per se. Competitiveness and leading edge technology are key to being awarded. Last but not least, maintaining a robust and competitive domestic Defence industry assures us independent national security.

Cassidian is the second largest division of EADS whose other divisions include Airbus, Eurocopter and Astrium. In 2011, Cassidian employed approximately 28,000 employees worldwide and achieved combined revenues of â‚Ź5.8 billion. The corporate headquarters of Cassidian are located in Munich, Germany with several offices located across Europe, USA, India, Mexico and the Middle East. The Swiss representative office of Cassidian is located in Bern. From ground surveillance, weapon location system, surveillance and target acquisition to passive radar, Cassidian's systems are available to support critical security missions worldwide. Cassidian produces ground,
naval and airborne multimode radar systems for different users and applications. An example of which is ground surveillance radar used for supporting air defence units. The mobile land based surveillance and target acquisition radar TRML3D is designed for medium range detection and air defence. The rapidly deployable system is fully operational in less then 10 minutes. It is capable of detecting tracking and classifying various types of targets, focussing on small, fast and low-flying aircraft, missiles and hovering helicopters. TRML-3D can be deployed as a stand-alone radar or integrated into air defence systems in coordination with other radars and command control systems. With IMESS (Integriertes Modulares Einsatzsystem Schweizer Soldat), armasuisse selected Cassidian's Warrior21TM concept as the basis for the Swiss Army's future soldier system. By listening closely to the needs of todays infantryman, CASSIDIAN is now able to provide them with robust equipment for enhanced mobility, survivability, lethality and sustainability. The IMESS modular system offers the Swiss Army a complete range of equipment for the individual soldier up to platoon level, and for integration in armoured vehicles. Cassidian is also a leading provider of IT and communications infrastructure solutions for military and security
organizations worldwide. Cassidian designs and integrates solutions for fixed IT and communication infrastructure in NATO headquarters in Europe, nation-wide border security systems as well as deployable IT and communication systems for NATO and the French, German and UK forces. NATO relies on Cassidian's deployable IT and communication infrastructure (DCIS) and for the German forces, Cassidian provided MobKommSysBw, which is today the most advanced deployable
communication system amongst European forces. In addition to having a broad understanding of IT and cammunications solutions, Cassidian's success lies in its ability to manage complex projects together with a large number of partners and subcontractors and deliver solutions to the satisfaction of their customers. For public safety and
military users, Cassidian provides Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) networks, being the only global provider who can offer TETRA, TETRAPOL and P25 technology. The Swiss POLYCOM network, which based on Cassidian's TETRAPOL technology started operation in 1999 and will serve in total more than 50.000 public safety users after migration of all user groups.

ver the years Thales Switzerland has proven itself to be a very innovative company. It has become the leading provider of tactical communication equipment for the Swiss defence market. However, Thales's integrated solutions reach far beyond Swiss borders. With the rising demand for C4ISTAR capabilities on the move, new requirements for bandwidth, positioning and on board power management for vehicles have arisen. Thales Switzerland has met the challenge by seeking to provide the world with state-ofthe-art integrated navigation systems, mast control and vehicle power management systems. One of Thales's core businesses is the design, development and production of line of sight (LOS) systems for the world market. Ten years ago, Thales Switzerland began to integrate these systems, together with other communication equipment onto the masts of vehicles. The company is currently upgrading its LOS product line (Band 4 & 5) for data transmission up to 155Mbps and Line Interfaces for PDH or SDH or Ethernet/IP. This is the Thales answer to the increased demand for data communication within the LOS frequency-band 5 GHz and 15 GHz. With operations in 50
