GENDER

PRONOUNS & why they are important

What is a “Gender Pronoun”? A gender pronoun is the pronoun that a person chooses for themselves. Gender Pronouns are the pronouns we use to refer to people in conversation, for example: She/Her, He/Him, They/Them. Remember, it is important to respect people’s gender pronouns, you can’t always know someone’s gender pronoun by looking at them.

Why is it important to respect people’s Gender Pronouns? It’s important to respect a persons gender pronoun as it is a persons identity. When someone suggests a different pronoun it can lead to misgendering which may make someone feel disrespected or even jeopardize someone’s security. Do not suppose a pronoun for someone based off their looks, instead ask them for their preferred pronoun. Respecting and asking creates a safe space for people, making them feel that they can fully be themselves.

What if I accidentally use the wrong pronouns? It’s important to not make a big deal of your mistake, simply apologize, correct yourself and move on. Making a big deal of the situation can only make it worse and draw more attention, the less deal you make of it the less it will be. If you realize that you made a mistake after, make sure to apologize to that person in private and use the correct pronouns in the future. Being misgendered can hurt and it is important to make the person feel respected and comforted.
