ARKINO By Jared Apon

O

n the first day of the NAW 2021, UAPSA launched ARKINO: A Conservation of Philippine Architecture and Heritage. “ARKINO” is a portmanteau of "arki-" which means “arkitektura" or "architecture” and "-ino" from “Filipino”. The theme was “Celebrating Filipino Architecture and Uplifting Cultural Heritage”. ARKINO was a live webinar presented by two notable architects. The first lecture was given by Ar. Jayson Portem. It tackled the “Role of Architecture Students in the Protection of Cultural Properties”, while Ar. Gerard Lico’s topic was “Re(GENESIS): Breathing New Life to Old Buildings”. Ar. Portem stated that the Philippines is new to conservation and emphasized the idea of how architectural conservation is vital for development. In this light, he emphasized that even students can help with preserving Philippine architecture and it is not an obstacle to do so. He presented an informative

lecture about the content of the Philippine Registry of Cultural Property (PRECUP) to further expand our knowledge about how cultural properties are deemed to be significant to our cultural heritage. Subsequently, he listed ways on how students can take part and restore Philippine architecture to its former glory. The discussion given by Ar. Lico was about bringing old buildings back to life. He started his presentation with the quote “Built heritage is the past condensed in physical and spatial forms. In a contemporary world dominated by global culture that mass produces franchise architecture”. He prolonged the discourse by expounding on topics related to heritage conservation, decision-making factors, and selected projects. Overall, the program steered towards the theme of echoing the past while linking it with the current Philippine heritage conservation. Finally, the event was wrapped up with awarding of certificates, an ice breaker, open forum, and a photo opportunity.

ARKITRIVIA By Ezekiel Z. Legaspi

T

he event-filled celebration of NAW 2021 featured ArkiTrivia, where UAPSA officers, members, and mentors hopped into the trend in TikTok. The week-long ArkiTrivia series launched videos each day quizzing the viewers with a twist of the TikTok trend of duets and blind reaction. The facts consisted of noteworthy information around the world of architecture. The video series highlighted various facts from the famous video game Sims as an architectural simulator and Zaha Hadid’s visionary design, to the pinpoint details of the National Building Code. The TikTok event was topped off by architect and urban technologist, Ar. Adrian Tampolino. UAPSA NAW’s ArkiTrivia proves that new waves of social media can be a medium for spreading architectural information; making modern architects future forward-thinkers whilst learning by scrolling away. You can watch the ArkiTrivia series on UAPSA’s TikTok account, @uapsa_tiktok.

PASILIP: Filipino-Style Design Framework By Janae Christabelle Ng

U

APSA launched their virtual exhibit PASILIP: Filipino-style Design Framework alongside the live voting for the submissions on December 7. While the entries were united as tributes to Filipino architecture, they varied from architectural drawings to artworks. The works were displayed on the Artsteps website, while the 1-hour voting period was open to everybody on the webpage Mentimeter—as it was streamed in real time on Facebook live. The submissions received the admiration of the website guests and inspired UAPSA members to unlock their potential and become more confident

in their handiworks. According to announcement of winners, Kurt Lewis Bolus (UAPSA-DHVSU, District A2) emerged as the champion with his depiction of a slum that is complemented by the advocacy to “nurture and cultivate our own [style]” over favoring foreign architectural styles. He was followed by Erika Mae Samaniego (UAPSA-UST, District B1), who bagged first place, while Art Dave Calusin (UAPSA-MSEUF; District B4) claimed second place. Are you curious about their Filipino-style design entries? Visit the exhibit on the Artsteps website anytime to feast your eyes on the pride of UAPSA by clicking here.

PAGTUKIB: New Solution, New Beginning By JR N. Caberte

D

Ar. Ralph Richard Su, a professor and also a graduate of the University of San Carlos and the principal architect of RRS+A (a Cebu-based architecture and design studio) talked about the importance of knowing that “everything is interconnected” - how only through looking back at the past, “learning from it”, and being aware of the present do we get to move forward towards the future. Additionally, Ar. Su also stressed and gave attention to the principle of trusting the process that in order for us to move forward, we must first believe and actually do the process.

Ar. Joel Ong, a graduate of the University of San Carlos in Cebu and a 2007 topnotcher of the Architectural Licensure Exam, placed emphasis on “Progress over Perfection” - that is, to accept the fact that we can never achieve perfection but that we can always strive to continually and constantly improve. Furthermore, Ar. Joel Ong also talked about how the future of architecture lies in our hands; how for the future of architecture to progress, we have to keep thinking outside the box to “push things forward”.

In their concluding remarks for students, Ar. Ong emphasized ‌the importance of “doing what you love and loving what you do”, while Ar. Su encouraged to avoid being “a jack of all trades” and rather focus on “being a master of one” while being “competent with everything else”. Ending the webinar with a final take away, both architects encouraged participants to keep thinking and pushing outside the box; to use lessons learned from the past as a catalyst to move forward.

erived from the Hiligaynon term which means “to discover”, Pagtukib focused on the adaptable and evolving trends in architecture and design; enlightening participants in discovering solutions in moving forward and starting anew. Held via Zoom and live-streamed via Facebook, the webinar event was made possible through its speakers Ar. Joel Ong and Ar. Ralph Richard Su, both discussing their take on the topic of “Evolving Trend that will Mold the Future of Architecture”.

T

he Christmas Outreach Caravan is an initiative launched by UAPSA for NAW 2021 with the aim of supporting and uplifting families and children within indigenous and marginalized groups in the community.

One Family, One Chapter became an initiative that united UAPSA members in the quest to help create a brighter and more hopeful Christmas for these families and children amidst difficulties during this pandemic. In this season of giving, UAPSA continued on to give hope and compassion to those in need.

The donation drive lasted two weeks - from November 28 up to December 12, and the UAPSA chapters and members continuously pledged and contributed to the cause. Within just the short amount of time, forty-four student chapters of UAPSA all over the country managed to raise Php 34,363 worth of monetary donations. Hosted by UAPSA-USL with the assistance of UAP Cagayan Valley and UAP Cagayan North, the project was carried out on December 12. Fifty families and children of the Agta community in Quibal, Peñablanca, Cagayan gathered in a covered court as gift packs were given out by the volunteers. Children of the community lined up to play games in the short program prepared by the UAPSA outreach members.

TAGIS: Paligsahan ng Arkitekturang Katutubo By Chriszel Kaiszie Nadong

I

n honor of the annual National Architecture Week, UAPSA hosted a live tournament on the 6th day of the week-long event. TAGIS: Paligsahan ng Arkitekturang Katutubo was an interactive quiz bee that included young people from all UAPSA Chapters competing against each other. There were four areas and 16 participants in total. The questions incorporated anything architecture-related– specifically in Architectural Design, History of Architecture, and Theory of Architecture. Staying true to the theme of the tournament, the questions were often centered around Filipino Architecture. This event intended to provide active stimulation of the basic knowledge the participants and even the audiences have about architecture. Furthermore, this tournament also enhanced the competitiveness and skills of the people involved. The mechanics of the game were fairly simple; raise both hands to the screen as the

Quizmaster reads the question and until the timer allotted to answer them is over, by then all participants must raise a paper with the printed letters “A”, “B”, “C”, or “D”– whichever their answer is– in front of their cameras. As the participants battled with their wits and knowledge for the first half of the competition, only four of them were able to ascend into the Final Round. At the end of the competition, the winners were announced. For the 2nd Runner up, with 94 points, Mr. Mark Vincent Ramos from Area A. For the 1st Runner up, with 97 points, Mr. Clint Daniel Abella from Area B. And last but definitely not least, this year’s National Architecture Week Quiz Bee Champion, with 99 points, Ms. Bela Christianna Bernal from Area C. The winners were awarded with a cash prize and a certificate of recognition.

It was a close fight between the participants as seen on the scoreboard, making it evident that the participants were well-versed in their fields and friendly competition against each individual was promoted.

YUGTO: Fellowship Night By Kian Stefano C. Santos

O

n the final day of NAW 2021, UAPSA held a short but meaningful two and a half hour program over a Zoom Meeting to close the week and begin a new chapter, so to speak. They held activities for various members to interact and get to know one another. And as a testament to their tagline for the event, “embark on a transition towards a social gathering”, this was done through the form of a TikTok competition open to all generations and members that hoped to bridge the gap between the past and present. The Fellowship Night began with an introduction to and some opening remarks by the UAPSA Chapter Head, Ar. Paulina Mae A. Ordoñez; after which the event activities promptly started. The attendees were greeted with a series of 20 sensational TikTok performances sent in by the chapter members, followed by games with prizes for the winners, and awarding ceremonies for the winners. Over the course of the event, members of different chapters got the opportunity to bond and mingle amongst themselves after what would have been an unforgettable week for all involved. The event closed with a photo opportunity for all the participants. Despite being a fellowship night undertaken in an online context, the members and hosts of UAPSA’s YUGTO have made a meaningful contribution to what was undoubtedly a busy week. They have attempted to, and successfully achieved trying to bridge a generational divide in the attendees through fun and entertaining activities. Such was a perfect way to end an undeniably enjoyable week.
