T The Biden administration has continuously denied that there is an ongoing crisis at the border and claims that the situation is under control.

hree sets of images emerged on March 22 of cramped and crowded conditions inside a temporary processing facility to house migrants attempting to enter the U.S. in Donna, Texas under new immigration rules set by the Biden administration. The story appears to have first been broken by investigative journalist team Project Veritas, who said an unnamed whistleblower, “Reached out to Project Veritas and explained the conditions that these migrants face on a regular basis while detained at this facility.” The source provided photographs of the facilities. The whistleblower said the photos were recent, and the facility consisted of eight pods divided into eight cells, “At any given moment there are an average of 3,000 people in custody here.” “They [illegal immigrants] are separated by age or physical size depending on room. Fifty were COVID positive in these cells over the last few days. There have been multiple sexual assaults, normal assaults and daily medical emergencies.” Later in the day, Rep. On Jan. 20, which was Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s Inauguration Day, Rio Grande Valley, Texas television station KRGV ran a segment on the construction of the Donna facility. At the time, CBP said the facility would be completed in 30 days. KRGV published a statement

by the federal agency, “CBP is moving forward with plans for the mobilization of softside facilities (SSF) in Donna, Texas. A lease with the city of Donna was awarded on January 15, 2021 and the notice to proceed was signed on January 19, 2021. Construction of the SSF should be completed in approximately 30 days.” “Since April, CBP has seen a steady increase of UACs (Unaccompanied Alien Children) from the Western Hemisphere due to the worsening economic conditions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, CBP is constructing temporary soft-side facilities in Donna, approximately 20 miles from the RGV CPC, to ensure existing processing capacity remains.” In a number of Executive Orders issued by Biden on Jan. 20, the new administration unwound a series of illegal immigration EOs issued by the Trump administration. Concerns about health and safety of the influx of migrants on the Southern border emerged on March 19 when the National Sheriffs Association issued a Border Security Resolution warning, “There is a compelling public safety interest in securing our border.

COVID-19 Infections Rising in Several States Despite Vaccination Campaign By Prakash Gogoi Vision Times

T

he United States is seeing a resurgence of coronavirus infections in various states, with data from the John Hopkins University showing that the seven-day average of new cases spiked by around 5 percent in 27 states as of Sunday. Overall, the country’s infection rate rose 1 percent compared to the previous week. The increase in infection rates is happening despite the government administering around 2.5 million shots daily. Many experts attribute the loosening of restrictions, including face mask mandates, to the rise in coronavirus cases. Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, believes that lifting restrictions is a “serious threat” to the progress made in controlling the pandemic. She warned that the UK variant could become the dominant strain in the

A recent study has indicated that the number of COVID-19 cases could be higher than reported. The research team estimates the total number of infections until Sept. 2020 to be more than the official number by 16 million.

U.S. by the end of March. The variant is considered to be around 56 percent more contagious than the earlier strains and possibly even two times deadlier than the current dominant strain in America. Dr. Ashish Jha, Dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, points out that even though the vaccine distribution is happening at a reasonable speed, the spread of variants is troubling news. Michael Osterholm, an epidemiologist and head of the University of Minnesota’s Center for

Infectious Disease Research and Policy, warns that easing the restrictions is “creating a perfect storm moment for virus transmission.” Osterholm expects people over the age of 65 to be extremely vulnerable to the UK strain. At present, only 40 percent of Americans in this demographic have been vaccinated. Dr. Anthony Fauci, White House Chief Medical Advisor, also remarked that he is concerned about the easing restrictions and relaxation of public health measures. “So it is unfortunate but

not surprising to me that you are seeing increases in a number of cases per day in areas — cities, states, or regions — even though vaccines are being distributed at a pretty good clip of 2 (million) to 3 million per day… That could be overcome if certain areas pull back prematurely on the mitigation and public health measures that we all talk about,” Fauci said in a statement. More than 30 million Americans have been infected with the coronavirus, with over 556,000 deaths. The number of total cases per million population is at 92,009 while fatalities per million population stand at 1,673.

As infections rise millions of vaccinations are administered

California leads with over 3.6 million total cases, followed by Texas and Florida at the second and third spots with more than 2 million infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that

more than 150 million vaccines had been distributed across the United States, with over 126 million administered. A recent study has indicated that the number of COVID-19 (CCP Virus) cases could be higher than reported. The research team estimates the total number of infections until Sept. 2020 to be more than the official number by 16 million. Given that over five months have passed, the unaccounted coronavirus cases will inevitably be higher. The study used insurance data to arrive at these numbers. “People applying for life insurance tend to be more educated, richer, and probably more risk-averse. So the findings from this study do not generalize to the general population and probably represent a lower bound of true seroprevalence in the general population,” Neeraj Sood, Director of the COVID Initiative at the University of Southern California Schaeffer Center in Los Angeles, told Medscape.

New York Times Loses Motion to Dismiss in Libel Suit On Project Veritas Ilhan Omar Ballot Harvesting Report By Neil Campbell Vision Times

T

he New York Times has lost a motion to dismiss in a defamation lawsuit brought by investigative journalist team Project Veritas over mischaracterizations of a September 2020 report about ballot harvesting in Minnesota’s Somali community by Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar. In a preamble summary of facts, New York Supreme Court Justice Charles Wood described the Veritas video as on the “topic of alleged illegal voting practices, featuring a Somali-American Minneapolis campaign worker named Liban Mohamed. The Video also featured an interview with Omar Jamal, a community service officer for the Ramsey County Sherriff’s Office, and a political consultant in the Minneapolis Somali-American community.” “Jamal stated that there was widespread corruption by Somali-American politicians, who were all part of an extended Somali-American ‘clan,’ including cash payments to elderly voters in exchange for their absentee ballots,” said Wood. In the Project Veritas videos, a Snapchat by Liban Mohamed is featured in which he brags, “Money is everything. Money is the

King in this world. If you ain’t got money, you should not be here period.” In the same clip, Mohamed also showed a stack of more than 300 absentee ballots on the dash of his car collected from the Somali community, “All these here are absentee ballots. Can’t you see? Look at all these, my car is full. My car is full,” he says in Somali. Minnesota law forbids being in possession of more than 3 ballots. In a second video, Project Veritas caught Mohamed on hidden camera paying a Somali man $200 for his absentee ballot. Stating that the video is ‘deceptive’ and stating ‘without verifiable evidence’ in a factual way in a news article certainly presents the statement as fact, not opinion. Further, the Astor and Hsu Articles could be viewed as exposing Veritas to ridicule and harm to its reputation as a media source because the reader may read these news Articles, expecting facts, not opinion, and conclude that Veritas is a partisan zealot group, deceptively editing video, and presenting it as news. New York Supreme Court Justice Charles Wood in his Judgment on the Times’ Motion to Dismiss In response, New York Times published three articles penned by Maggie Astor

in September, entitled “Project Veritas Video Was a ‘Coordinated Disinformation Campaign,’ Researchers Say,” “Researchers say Project Veritas Video Accusing Ilhan Omar of Voter Fraud was a ‘Coordinated Disinformation Campaign’” and “Project Veritas Releases Misleading Video, Part of What Experts Call a Coordinated Effort,” published in the print edition only. The Times also published two articles by Tiffany Hsu in October, doubling down on the ‘disinformation’ narrative, “Conservative News Sites Fuel Voter Fraud Misinformation,” and “False Voter Fraud Stories Are Churning on Conservative News Sites,” in print. In defamation lawsuits, the burden is on the Plaintiff to establish that the publisher intended “actual malice,” meaning they knew what they published was untrue and intended to defame the target. The New York Tomes argued Veritas’s videos were untrue because they claimed the ballot harvesting campaign was connected to Rep. Omar’s campaign “with no verifiable evidence.” Justice Wood summarized the Defendant’s pleadings as, “The gist of those statements is that the allegations about Rep. Omar’s campaign’s connection to the ballot fraud are insufficiently supported— which is what numerous

‘independent reputable news sources and fact checkers’ concluded. The defendants also appear to argue that ‘Tweets’ or other marketing by Veritas and third parties to draw viewers to the Video by Veritas somehow made the contents of the Video itself deceptive.” In the first article published by the Times, whose headline claimed the Veritas video was a “Coordinated Disinformation Campaign, Researchers Say,” the lede uses the following verbiage, “A deceptive video released on Sunday by the conservative activist James O’Keefe, which claimed through unidentified sources and with no verifiable evidence that Representative Ilhan Omar’s

campaign had collected ballots illegally, was probably part of a coordinated disinformation effort, according to researchers at Stanford University and the University of Washington.” In his dismissal, Justice Wood said of the Times’ attempt to defend, “In part, Defendants argue that their statements describing Veritas’ Video as ‘deceptive,’ ‘false,’ and ‘without evidence’ were mere opinion incapable of being judged true or false.” But found, “However, if a writer interjects an opinion in a news article (and will seek to claim legal protections as opinion) it stands to reason that the writer should have an obligation to alert the reader, including a court that may need to determine whether it is fact or opinion, that it is opinion.” In the 16-page Judgment, Wood was more scathing in his findings about the inflammatory wording used by the Times in their disseminations about the ballot harvesting piece, “the dictionary definitions of ‘disinformation’ and ‘deceptive’ provided by defendants’ counsel certainly apply to Astor’s and Hsu’s failure to note that they injected their opinions in news articles, as they now claim.” Justice Wood continued, “Stating that the video is ‘deceptive’ and stating ‘without verifiable evidence’ in a factual way in a news article

certainly presents the statement as fact, not opinion. Further, the Astor and Hsu Articles could be viewed as exposing Veritas to ridicule and harm to its reputation as a media source because the reader may read these news Articles, expecting facts, not opinion, and conclude that Veritas is a partisan zealot group, deceptively editing video, and presenting it as news.” “Upon review of the total context and tone of the stories, which clearly disparage Veritas and the Video, the court concludes that a reasonable reader could very well believe that the challenged statements were conveying facts about Veritas. The Articles certainly could be viewed as being purposely designed to appear that Defendants are imparting facts and evidence that Veritas’ videos were deceptive and Veritas is merely a right-wing political group,” found Justice Wood. James O’Keefe, Project Veritas founder and lead, celebrated the victory in a press release, “This ruling means Project Veritas will now be able to put New York Times reporter Maggie Astor and New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet under oath where they will be forced to answer our questions. Project Veritas will record these depositions and expose them for the world to see.” ny@visiontimes.com

Japan, US to Cooperate on Defending Taiwan From Beijing Aggression By David Wagner Vision Times

T

he U.S. and Japan have pledged to prevent military aggression by Communist China towards Taiwan, the democratically governed island Beijing sees as a rightful part of its territory. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin brought up the issue when he held talks with Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi, according to Japanese reports on March 21. Kishi called for peace in the Taiwan strait but agreed to help protect Taiwan and U.S. warships in the area. Japan is constitutionally prohibited from deploying its military overseas in a combat role, something the ruling Liberal Democratic Party seeks to change. In the 2000s, Japanese forces were

sent to Iraq to help in support assignments. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had said on March 3 that “our relationship with China will be competitive when it should be, collaborative when it can be, and adversarial when it must be.” He also spoke of the need to “engage China from a position of strength,” which “requires working with allies and partners.”

Support for Taiwan ‘rock-solid’

The Biden administration seems to be continuing the trend that emerged under preceding president Donald Trump, when the U.S. made a greater priority of confronting Beijing on Taiwan — which is officially known as the Republic of China and maintains a distinct government from the communist

jing regarding the troubling pattern of ongoing PRC attempts to intimidate its neighbors in the region, including Taiwan.” The unnamed spokesperson also said that Biden administration support for Taiwan is “rock-solid.” They added that “we will stand with friends and allies to advance our shared prosperity, security, and values and a free and open Indo-Pacific region — and that includes deepening our unofficial ties with democratic Taiwan.” On March 7, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said, “the Chinese government has no room for compromise.” “We urge the new U.S. administration to fully understand the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue” and “completely change the previous administration’s dangerous practices of ‘crossing the

line’ and ‘playing with fire.’” Tokyo has urged the U.S. to take a tougher stance on China. In particular, Kishi expressed his “strong concern over the increased activities of the China Coastguard recently and their stronger partnership with [Beijing’s] military forces.” The mainland Chinese Coast Guard Law, implemented Feb. 1, allows the maritime force open fire on foreign ships in the waters claimed by the People’s Republic of China (PRC). This includes territory administered by Japan and the waters around Taiwan. “We must not allow the Coast Guard law to undermine the legitimate interests of relevant nations including Japan,” Kishi stated. Earlier in March, the U.S. and Japan had agreed to joint military drills in the

Bioweapons Expert Warns: Laboratory Viruses Pose ‘Existential Threat’ By Jack Roberts Vision Times

T

he mayhem unleashed by the coronavirus still looms large over the globe. Leading bioweapons experts have said it is necessary to maintain stringent security measures where laboratory viruses and high-risk pathogens are being tested. It is widely known that the Wuhan Institute of Virology, located in China’s Hubei Province, was actually dealing with the analysis of bat coronaviruses and there has been much speculation about whether or not the China lab could be the point of origin for the COVID-19 pandemic. Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a leading UK-based bioweapons expert told the Financial Times: “I think we need to see biological hazards as an existential threat to the 21st century in the same way that

atomic science was to the 20th century.” The on-going COVID-19 pandemic has shown how dangerous contagious viruses can be to mankind. It is true that several such highly-infectious viruses are being examined in various labs in different countries. The worrisome thing is not all such labs are equipped with necessary safety protocols. Hamish de Bretton-Gordon added: “The biological weapons convention says you should adhere to these rules, you should follow these guidelines and if there’s an accident, you should report it, but people have only paid lip service to that,” (Financial Times). De Bretton-Gordon spent over a decade focused on chemical and biological attacks while serving in the British army and has experience dealing with anthrax, sarin, and chlorine gas attacks in countries like Syria and

Iraq. He says the risks of stealing and spreading such highrisk pathogens do exist. During his time with the British army, De BrettonGordon served as commanding officer for the UK’s Joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Regiment. The security warnings of the former commander come at a time when the World Health Organization (WHO) team probing the origins of the pandemic has completed its work at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. It is yet to be ascertained if the lab was responsible for leaking the killer virus. However, de Bretton-Gordon said the coronavirus pandemic has shown how dangerous the after-effects of a lab breach can be.

The riskiest laboratory viruses

The riskiest pathogens such as Ebola and anthrax are stored in the maximum con-

tainment BioSecurity Level 4 (BSL-4) labs. There are more than 50 such labs globally. The BSL-4 labs are put under WHO biosecurity guidelines and elevated national security regulations. Incidentally, the disputed Wuhan facility is also a BSL-4 lab. Currently, the WHO only requires mandatory inspections for two of these labs that contain the last remaining supply of smallpox virus – the US Center for Disease Control in Georgia and the Vector Institute in Siberia, Russia. Concerns about the lack of safety protocols at the BSL-4 labs existed even before the pandemic. In particular, U.S. diplomats visited the Wuhan Institute of Virology three years back and warned of a shortage of skilled technicians needed to safely operate the facility. George Mason University’s biodefense expert Professor Gregory Koblentz said that

In any other construct, infec-

Border Sheriffs recover hundreds of bodies a year in the remote areas of their counties. These are the result of

migrant deaths at the hands of bandits or coyotes, or due to the harsh environmental conditions in the southwest.” A March 22 study by the Center for Immigration Studies meanwhile found that $4.38 billion in stimulus checks issued by the Biden administration could go to illegal immigrants. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has never ruled Taiwan, but it maintains that the island must be “reunified” with the PRC, by force if necessary. “The Chinese mainland has always made its position and bottom line clear both politically and diplomatically,” Beijing-based naval expert Li Jie wrote in an editorial published by the Communist Party-run Global Times. “It will never allow any other country to interfere in [the] Taiwan question. If anyone wants to intervene, China will not hesitate to utilize all troops and arms. We will be ready to use all means, including force, to achieve reunification,” Li wrote.

the WHO team’s experience at the Wuhan Institute for Virology shows these facilities need better monitoring and deployment of safety protocols. He added: “In the next couple of years there will definitely be more countries building BSL-4 labs. So we need to be more proactive and develop better oversight now to prevent this increased research [on viruses] resulting in more accidents or reckless behavior that could cause an outbreak that’s entirely avoidable.” (Financial Times) Pathogens like botulinum and influenza are typically stored in the BSL-3 labs and these have lower security protocols in place. It is unclear how many BSL-3 labs are in existence globally. Hamish de Bretton-Gordon thinks there could be over 3,000 such labs. Professor Koblentz is now working with King’s College London’s Dr. Filippa Lentzos. The latter is an expert in

analyzing biological threats. They are keen on making a database of BSL-4 labs, albeit unofficially. In the future, they want to make a database of the BSL-3 labs too. Meanwhile, the WHO said in a statement that it is aware of these lab biosecurity issues. De Bretton-Gordon thinks biological weapons are “morbidly brilliant” as they are not only effective but also instill a sense of fear in the victims. Earlier, during the Ebola crisis spanning 2014-2016, he advised U.S. security services regarding the risk of terrorist groups intentionally using suicide bombers carrying the viruses to spread mass contamination. Virus outbreaks over the last few years have drawn the attention of security officials. UK defense secretary Ben Wallace has warned that the threat of chemical and biological attack is growing. He thinks the risk of biological attacks affecting the global population is very real. Unfortunately, with information readily available from online sources, the task of malicious parties seeking such weapons is that much easier.

officials revealed cartels were making more than $14 million per day in the business of trafficking migrants across the border, “A lot of these vulnerable populations use their life savings. Some are essentially indentured servants and they’re working off this debt for a long period of time,” said former Tucson Border Patrol Chief Roy Villareal in a Fox News interview. “In other cases, some of these migrants are asked to transport narcotics or some form of crime to work off a different part of their debt.”

When asked whether he would visit the border after the leaked images of the Donna facility emerged, President Biden said “At some point I will, yes,” to reporters outside the White House on March 22, adding “I know what’s going on in those facilities.” Kamala Harris started laughing and replied “Not today!” when asked by reporters at Jacksonville International Airport the same day if she had plans to visit the border facilities, adding, “But I have before and I’m sure I will again.” 212-730-6963

EU Issuing Digital Certificates for Domestic Travel, Civil Liberty Groups Sound Alarm By Arvind Datta Vision Times

T

EU plans to issue digital green certificates as a means of allowing its people to travel with greater freedom inside the bloc.

he European Commission recent ly introduced a ‘Digital Green Certificate’ to allow EU citizens to travel with “greater freedom” within the bloc. Authorities will grant the certificate to those who are vaccinated, have tested negative for COVID-19, or have recovered. Coronavirus is also known as the CCP Virus, as it said to have originated in China during the rulership of the Chinese Communist Party.) The digital certificates come as the summer season approaches, along with aspirations for increased travel in the coming months. “This is an EU level approach to issuing, verifying, and accepting certificates to facilitate free movement within the EU… [The legislative proposal is] based on a strict respect for non-discrimination and of the fundamental rights of EU citizens… It will also allow the possibility to extend to compatible certificates issued in third countries,” the Commission said in a statement. The digital certificate proposal stipulates that any EU member state that allows vaccinated travelers to bypass restrictions should accept certificates from other member states under the same conditions. The certificates will be issued in paper form as well.

EU guarantees security

European Commission has guaranteed that all data collected will be secured by a “very high level of data protection.” Once the World Health Organization (WHO) declares that the pandemic is over, the certificates will be suspended. European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas pointed out that the digital certificate proposal is a “balanced package” of new and existing measures. He hopes that the EU member states will support the bid at the upcoming summit on March 25. The proposal will not come into force unless EU lawmakers approve it. The digital certificate plan has received support from countries like Greece, which relies heavily on the tourism industry. “Europe is moving forward with our proposal. The introduction of a Digital Green Certificate is on track for implementation. It is a decision that will significantly facilitate citizens’ movement and help boost tourism and the economies that rely heavily on it,” Greek

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a tweet. Irish tourism chiefs are also in favor of the EU’s digital certificate plan. Some reports have warned that thousands of Irish jobs will suffer if imposed pandemic restraints again dampen the upcoming summer tourism season. Eoghan O’Mara Walsh, chief executive of the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation, said that the certificates were a lifeline for the hard-hit tourism sector.”

Discrimination and totalitarianism

The idea of vaccine passports, health certificates, and compulsory vaccination have faced strong opposition from several EU states, with concerns that it could lead to discrimination and totalitarianism.

An obvious discriminatory scenario would unfold between vaccinated individuals who may enjoy traveling without restrictions and those who had not yet received their Digital Green card, including those who choose not to have the vaccine, which would mean harsher travel restrictions for them.

In France, a proposal to introduce health passports is opposed by Le Rassemblement National (RN) party. The party argues that such a move will essentially force people to get vaccinated since no one would want to be discriminated against for not being inoculated. Florian Philippot, president of the Patriotes party, calls the health passport a “dictatorial and totalitarian’ idea. “We will never accept that the government would impose by coercion that which it is not able to make us accept through trust… There cannot be secondclass citizenship for non-vaccinated people. It is profoundly damaging and [amounts to] liberticide [death to freedom],” President of the RN, Marine Le Pen, said in a tweet. Alison Thompson, a bioethicist and associate professor at the University of Toronto, pointed out that vaccine passports will basically split society into those who enjoy the rights and privileges of the passports, and those who are denied such privileges. She isn’t surprised that people are worried about whether the passport system will ever be fair. Last month, protests were held in Denmark against the government proposal to implement vaccine passports in the country. Organizers of one such protest also criticized it as a means to make vaccination compulsory and said that such a move would place severe restrictions on individual freedom. The protesters’ slogans included, ‘freedom for Denmark’ and ‘we have had enough.’ Civil liberty organizations are alarmed that the UK is also considering vaccine passports. Silkie Carlo, director of Big Brother Watch, warns that the passports could become the backbone of an oppressive digital ID system, eventually leading to health ‘apartheid’ (segregation) “Digital IDs would lead to sensitive records spanning medical, work, travel, and biometric data about each and every one of us being held at the fingertips of authorities and state bureaucrats… This dangerous plan would normalize identity checks, increase state control over law-abiding citizens and create a honeypot for cybercriminals,” Carlo said to The Guardian.

Europe Enters Another Lockdown as Pandemic Scare Resurfaces, UK Fares Better

By Arvind Datta Vision Times

M

ultiple European nations have once again entered the lockdown phase as a new wave of coronavirus infections threatens to deepen the pandemic crisis. The lockdowns come as the region faces severe challenges in vaccinating citizens against COVID-19, trailing behind other nations like the UK that have sped along with its vaccination campaign. Italy imposed new coronavirus restrictions on March 15 to slow down the expansion of the third wave of infections. The country’s seven-day average of new cases stands at 22,000. Tens of millions of people are classified as living in the most dangerous ‘red zones.’

ing weeks. At a news conference, he pointed out that the third wave cannot be stopped by using vaccines alone. “There are not yet enough vaccine doses in Europe to stop the third wave by vaccination alone… Even if the deliveries from EU orders come reliably, it will still take a few weeks until the risk groups are fully vaccinated,” Spahn said at a news conference. Meanwhile, many European nations have resumed using AstraZeneca vaccines following concerns that it causes blood clots. European Medicines Agency (EMA) has dismissed such concerns, with its investigation concluding that the vaccine is “safe and effective.” The EMA’s report was welcomed by health experts who believed that blocking the vaccine would only worsen the pandemic situation in Europe.

In these regions, strict travel bans have been enforced. If any person wishes to leave their homes, they must apply to the government. Almost all businesses, except those deemed essential, have been shut down. In France, lockdowns have been imposed in 16 regions, including Paris. Residents will have to provide attestation forms if they wish to travel 10 kilometers away from their homes. They will also need to carry proof of address with them at all times. A curfew will be in effect between 7 PM and 6 AM. Inter-regional travel is prohibited except for serious reasons. Those who do not follow these mandates will be fined €135 (approx. $161). Poland has announced the closure of non-essential shops, cultural facilities, sporting centers, and hotels for three weeks after infection rates surged by over 40 percent from last week’s numbers. Polish Health Minister Adam Niedzielski stated that the sudden spike in COVID-19 patients is due to the spread of the virus’s UK variant. Groceries and medical shops are exempt from the closure mandate. All in-person classes are to be canceled during the lockdown. Germany is also debating a potential lockdown in the face of a third infection wave. Health Minister Jens Spahn said that the rising number of infections means that the country cannot take steps to open up in the com-

The UK is more advanced than Europe at vaccinating its citizens. The region has vaccinated over 27 million people. In comparison, Europe’s leading nation in this regard, Germany, has only vaccinated less than 13 million citizens. The UK had approved its first vaccine three weeks ahead of the EU, gaining a significant advantage. However, Britain’s vaccination campaign, including securing supplies and distributing the vaccines, has also been far better planned than the EU, contributing to its success. But despite these measures, England’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Whitty, warns that the third wave of infections in autumn is inevitable.

“As things are opening up, what all the modeling suggests is that at some point we will get a surge in virus… Whether that happens, we hope it doesn’t happen soon, but it might for example happen later in the summer if we open up gradually, or if there’s a seasonal effect it might happen over the next autumn or winter… Some of them will end up in hospital and sadly some of them will go on to die. That’s just the reality of where we are,” Whitty said in a statement.

According to Russian media outlet TASS, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a press conference with multiple Chinese Communist Party (CCP) media sources, “The use of the socalled ‘vaccination passports’ is under discussions” because governments are trying to think of “ways for the normal functioning of countries, peoples and citizens in the[se] times, when the coronavirus infection remains to be a serious challenge for many regions of the world.” On March 9, the CCP rolled out a vaccine passport scheme distributed through Tencent’s WeChat, a heavily surveilled and censored platform Chinese citizens rely on for both communication and payment processing in the communist country’s social credit scheme. The Party’s QR code-based passport sys-

tem only applies to Chinese citizens, is theoretically voluntary, and only registers injections from the Chinese-made variants of the vaccine. The CCP has been using a similar QR code-based contact tracing system, which citizens are required to show at government-run checkpoints and entry to businesses since early 2020. Failure to produce a green-coloured response from a central government server at a checkpoint can result in immediate detention and quarantine by Party authorities. Of both the Chinese and the proposed European Union vaccine certification systems, Lavrov urged caution and suggested countries give “extra consideration and all-embracing evaluation of these initiatives… taking into account the principle of the voluntar[y] vaccination and equal approach, in order to make possible innovations mutually acceptable in any country,” so as to not create “new division lines.” Lavrov said that regardless of any certification or passport system, the Russian Federation was establishing a database of who had received their SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, “As of today, our current experience [is] in the stage of the formalization and stipulates the provision that anyone, who received a jab has the right of getting a ‘vaccination certificate’

either in written or digital forms. The data is entered into the federal registration list.”

Russia’s Foreign Minister sends mask message

Earlier in the day, Lavrov was filmed wearing a black mask with white letters, which said “FCKNG QRNTN,” with a video of the Minister wearing the mask near the Lijang River shared on Tiktok.

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov wore a mask with the words “FCKNG QRNTN” during his March 22 trip to China. The Russian Foreign Ministry said “Both the mask and the slogan suited the minister just right.” (Image: Screenshot)

According to Daily Mail, Lavrov received the mask as a gift from journalists for his 71st birthday. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated on social media there was no mistake about the mask or its meaning, “Both the mask and the slogan suited the minister just right.” Lavrov changed to a basic blue

non-N95 medical respirator mask when he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. At the beginning of the month, Lavrov was asked what he thinks about European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal for a vaccine passport system during an interview published by Russian public broadcaster VGTRK, where he said “This idea has received an ambivalent response from the European countries.” “The attitude towards this kind of bureaucracy in Brussels is not just ambitious, but also very serious. Many people say this idea contradicts the rules of democracy because the EU countries have already decided that vaccination is voluntary.” “The introduction of a COVID passport will be at variance with this principle of choice. So people will be forced to be vaccinated if they want to travel,” he said, adding, “Meanwhile in Europe people can hardly imagine their life without travel in the EU countries.” Early in March, scandalplagued New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the implementation of a vaccine passport regime using a proprietary IBM blockchain would be required for state residents who wished to attend sporting events, theatres, and certain businesses.

ommunist China apparently has a longterm plan to become the world’s leading superpower. One key aspect of the communist regime’s goal is to dominate outer space. According to Dr. Mark Hilborne of King’s College London, the UK government can counter the Chinese space threat if it leverages overseas territories like Diego Garcia and The Falklands. The UK can set up sensors on the ground at these locations to keep a constant watch on Chinese satellites. “It’s sort of a theoretical footprint on the ground, and that will give you coverage of different areas, which the US has kind of gaps in the southern hemisphere so the UK could then fill in that gap in terms of getting an overall picture of what’s in space and who’s doing what… [It is] relatively cheap to put ny@visiontimes.com

things on the ground and look upwards…” “From a military perspective … if China does things we need to know about it. And the same with Russia,” Hilborne told The Telegraph. A Pentagon report released last September detailed the risk of communist China dominating outer space. The report warned that China was amassing anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons to target satellites in both high and low orbits. Beijing already has on-the-ground capabilities to hit satellites flying in low orbit. The ASAT weapons extend communist China’s strike capabilities up to geosynchronous Earth orbit.

Communist China’s military tactics

Also, communist China has satellite jammers, directed energy weapons, and cyber capabilities as part of its stockpile. The report stated that the communist regime’s space military strategy would focus on attacking an ene-

my’s early warning, imaging, communication, and navigation systems to cripple their intelligence-gathering efforts. In June 2020, communist China completed its BeiDou navigation system. It consists of a network of 55 satellites that will offer it better space-based surveillance capabilities.

Island conflicts

While Diego Garcia and The Falkland islands give the UK the ability to keep watch on communist China, these islands are involved in political conflicts. Diego Garcia is located in the Indian Ocean and is claimed by Mauritius. In 2019, the International Court of Justice called the UK’s continued occupation of the island wrongful. It asked the UK to return it to Mauritius to complete the “decolonization” process. The island is now a U.S. military base, and the UK has not yet renounced its claim. year, Argentina’s President Alberto Fernandez committed that he will continue pursuing the issue. “[My administration] will continue to demand what belongs to Argentina. We shall do it in international forums peacefully but will never cease to do so… I will not ask permission from the

Travel to China Made Easy if You Have Received a Chinese Made Vaccine By David Wagner Vision Times

ommunist China will ease entry restrictions for individuals who have been inoculated with vaccines made by Chinese companies, simplifying the paperwork significantly. Embassies of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) issued notices on Monday explaining how people vaccinated with Chinese vaccines can apply for visas to enter China, whose international borders have been closed for most travel for about a year due to the pandemic. Chong Ja Ian, an associate professor of political science at the National University

of Singapore, said that “vaccine nationalism is a possibility that cannot be ruled out given the absence of further explanation” in an email to CNBC. Chinese vaccines have met with skepticism due to a lack of transparency for clinical trials, especially when compared to Western vaccine companies.

Chinese Sinovac and Coronavac

Brazil is one country that has been using Chinese Sinovac and Coronavac. At first, Brazilian officials announced that Sinovac was tested on 12,000 Brazilians and was 78 percent effective. They later clarified that the Sinovac vaccine is only 50.4 percent

effective, which barely meets the World Health Organization’s (WHO) minimum standard of effectiveness. Likewise, with Coronavac, Brazilian officials first said it was 100 percent effective in protecting against deaths and hospitalizations. They then revised it to be 78 percent effective in preventing severe infections, and finally, after pressure for transparency, admitted the actual figure of just 50.4 percent, after including patients who were infected and experiencing “very mild” COVID-19 to the list of those for whom the vaccine was considered effective. “To realistically achieve herd immunity, we would need to vaccinate pretty

much everyone,” said Pedro Hallal, an epidemiologist at the Federal University of Pelotas. “If you have a vaccine with 50 percent efficacy, you need full coverage to stop the virus from circulating. There is no margin for error.” According to CNBC, China has developed five different vaccines, and 34 countries have approved at least one Chinese vaccine, which can be compared to Pfizer-BioNTech, approved in 72 countries, or the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine approved in 74 countries. Adding to the controversy, the U.S., India, Japan, and Australia have recently announced plans to make vaccines more available to other countries, promising

to help finance the production of up to a billion doses of coronavirus vaccine by the end of 2022. PRC state media has criticized Western media and vaccines, while dismissing doubt about Chinese vaccines. The Global Times claimed that “Western media will immediately hype any unfavorable information about Chinese vaccines and try to amplify their impact on public psychology.” The Global Times continued: “mainstream US and British media are taking the lead in putting geopolitical labels on vaccines. They are meddling in political stances with the scientific attitude toward vaccines, using their propaganda to

Hong Kong Electoral Reforms Ensure Only Loyal Chinese Patriots Can be Elected By David Wagner Vision Times

T

he National People’s Congress of China passed electora l reforms that give Beijing the power to ensure that only loyalists will be elected in Hong Kong. Many believe that the move is stepping away from democracy and see the region having the least amount of freedom since Britain gave up power in 1997. However, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam praised the move as a step in the right direction. “There are loopholes in the electoral systems; there are also flaws in the systems in Hong Kong,” Lam said after returning from the National People’s Congress in Beijing. “I’m

glad that the central authorities have, again, exercised its constitutional powers to help address this problem for Hong Kong.” Foreign impressions of Hong Kong’s situation have been low. Especially since the passing of the security laws last June, Beijing has more power to apply criminal charges to citizens for secession, subversion, terrorism, or collaboration with foreign or external forces. British foreign secretary Dominic Raab said that the electoral changes would only further undermine international trust in China. “This is the latest step by Beijing to hollow out the space for democratic debate in Hong Kong,” Raab said. The vote in the Great Hall of the People had 2,895 del-

egates voting in favor of the changes and just one person abstaining. The changes could be applied sometime in the next few months and require that candidates pass a screening procedure that ensures they will be loyal enough to be deemed “patriots.” The move has been criticized as leaving the democratic opposition with the least amount of power and freedom since the British handed over the region. “It is designed to ensure that whoever is administering Hong Kong is patriotic, and this is only right in terms of political ethics,” Lam said. Beijing’s liaison office praised the electoral changes, saying that it would make the region better and more just. They also noted that the electoral changes were widely

approved by all and pointed to the media’s reporting and commentaries as proof that the move had public support. “This fully shows that after years of political dispute and radical social unrest, different sectors in Hong Kong have learned from its pain… this powerfully illustrates the central government’s policies in Hong Kong have a broad electorate base,” the Liaison Office said. Lo Kin-hei, chairman of the Democratic Party and one of the few prominent opposition figures not in custody, disapproved of the electoral changes. “I believe that in the future, those legislative councilors will be less and less representative of the Hong Kong people, and they will just be some loyalists who can do noth-

ing and who cannot represent the Hong Kong people at all,” Kin-hei said. “They should actually make the Legislative Council more responsive to the people’s voice, instead of suppressing the people’s voice.”

Hong Kong’s electoral reforms rebuked

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wrote in a statement: “These actions deny Hong Kongers a voice in their governance by limiting political participation, reducing democratic representation, and stifling political debate.” He also asked the authorities to release and drop charges on all arrested under the new National Security Laws that were implemented in June and called

Raimondo stated that communist China has been engaging in actions that blunt America’s technological edge and threaten alliances. She said that the Biden administration has been clear about the risk posed by unrestricted use of untrusted ICTS. Through the subpoenas, the department wants to collect information that will help protect the nation’s interests and American workers. Raimondo expressed hope that the companies would fully

cooperate with the department to complete a thorough review. “Trusted information and communications technology and services are essential to our national and economic security and remain a top priority for the Biden-Harris administration. The Administration is firmly committed to taking a whole-of-government approach to ensure that untrusted companies cannot misappropriate and misuse data and ensuring that U.S. technology does not support China’s or other actors’ malign activities.” Raimondo said in a statement.

In the last days of the Trump administration, the Commerce Department issued an interim rule that sought to address concerns regarding the information and communications industry’s supply chains. The rule implements Executive Order 13873 was put up for public comment for 60 days until March 22, when it will come into effect. An official from the department stated that the subpoenas wouldn’t affect the timing of the interim final rule. In January, the Business Roundtable, which represents CEOs from major companies, had complained to the

Hong Kong affairs are totally China’s own internal affairs,” and further that, “China does not interfere in other countries internal affairs, neither can we allow other countries to intervene in our own affairs. The communist regime has ordered the government and military personnel not to use Tesla vehicles, calling the company’s data collection a potential security risk. The instruction came after a security review. It concluded that the vehicles could record footage via exterior cameras and then send it to the United States. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has dismissed such concerns. “There’s a very strong incentive for us to be very confidential with any information… If Tesla used cars to spy in China or anywhere, we will get shut down,” Musk told a prominent Chinese forum during a virtual discussion. ny@visiontimes.com

New Study Shows

Microplastics Turn Into ‘Hubs’ for Pathogens, Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria By Troy Oakes Vision Times

I

t’s estimated that an average-sized wastewater treatment plant serving roughly 400,000 residents will discharge up to 2,000,000 microplastic particles into the environment each day. Yet, researchers are still learning the environmental and human health impact of these ultra-fine microplastics, less than 5 millimeters in length, found in everything from cosmetics, toothpaste and clothing microfibers, to our food, air, and drinking water. Now, researchers at the New Jersey Institute of Technology have shown that ubiquitous microplastics can become “hubs” for antibiotic-resistant bacteria and pathogens to grow once they wash down household drains and enter wastewater treatment plants — forming a slimy layer of buildup, or biofilm, on their surface that allows pathogenic microorganisms and antibiotic waste to attach and comingle. Every year, humans use tons of plastic just once, before throwing it away — and far too much of it ends up in our oceans. Microplastics, defined as plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, can enter the food web through trophic transfer, and we can see them in white sharks and even in ourselves. But small habit changes can make a big impact, and help reduce the amount of plastic that we see in our oceans. Join the movement to #KickPlastic. This video features Dr. Harley Newton. In findings published in Elsevier’s

Journal of Hazardous Materials Letters, researchers found certain strains of bacteria elevated antibiotic resistance by up to 30 times while living on microplastic biofilms that can form inside activated sludge units at municipal wastewater treatment plants. Mengyan Li, associate professor of chemistry and environmental science at NJIT and the study’s corresponding author, said: “A number of recent studies have focused on the negative impacts that millions of tons of microplastic waste a year is having on our freshwater and ocean environments, but until now the role of microplastics in our towns’ and cities’ wastewater treatment processes has largely been unknown. “These wastewater treatment plants can be hotspots where various chemicals, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and pathogens converge and what our study shows is that microplastics can serve as their carriers, posing imminent risks to aquatic biota and human health if they bypass the water treatment process.” Dung Ngoc Pham, NJIT Ph.D. candidate and first author of the study, added: “Most wastewater treatment plants are not designed for the removal of microplastics, so they are constantly being released into the receiving environment. Our goal was to investigate whether or not microplastics are enriching antibiotic-resistant bacteria from activated sludge at municipal wastewater treatment plants, and if so, learn more about the microbial communities involved.”

Microplastics can increase antibiotic resistance

In their study, the team collected batches of sludge samples from three domestic wastewater treatment plants in northern New Jersey, inoculating the samples in the lab with two widespread commercial microplastics — polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS). The team used a combination of quantitative PCR and next-generation sequencing techniques to identify the species of bacteria that tend to grow on the microplastics, tracking genetic changes of the bacteria along the way. You might not be able to see them, but they’re in the water. Although trash heaps are easier to spot in waterways, microplastics — pieces of plastic smaller than 5 mm — have started to stir more concern. Acting as sponges, the pieces soak up the chemicals around them and often make their way through the food chain, ending up on dinner plates. Most microplastics are created over time from larger pieces or directly from microbeads in products like face washes or toothpaste. The pieces are so small they pass through waste treatment plants and into waterways. The analysis revealed that three genes in particular — sul1, sul2, and intI1 — known to aid resistance to common antibiotics, sulfonamides, were found to be up to 30 times greater on the microplastic biofilms than in the lab’s control tests using sand biofilms after just three days. When the team spiked the samples with the antibi-

otic sulfamethoxazole (SMX), they found it further amplified the antibiotic resistance genes by up to 4.5-fold. Pham said: “Previously, we thought the presence of antibiotics would be necessary to enhance antibiotic-resistance genes in these microplastic-associated bacteria, but it seems microplastics can naturally allow for uptake of these resistance genes on their own. The presence of antibiotics does have a significant multiplier effect however.” Eight different species of bacteria were found highly enriched on the microplastics. Among these species, the team observed two emerging human pathogens typically linked with respiratory infection, Raoultella ornithinolytica and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, frequently hitchhiking on the microplastic biofilms. The team say the most common strain found on the microplastics by far, Novosphingobium pokkalii, is likely a key initiator in forming the sticky biofilm that attracts such pathogens — as it proliferates, it may contribute to the deterioration of the plastic and expand the biofilm. Plastic debris is everywhere in nature, and the harm it causes is impossible to ignore. But it’s less clear what ingesting plastics is doing to us. Rick Smith wanted to discover: are microplastics absorbed into the human body? At the same time, the team’s study highlighted the role of the gene intI1, a mobile genetic element chiefly responsible for enabling the exchange of antibiotic resistance genes among the microplastic-bound microbes. Li explained: “We might think of microplastics as tiny beads, but they provide an enormous surface area for microbes to reside. When these microplastics enter the wastewater treatment plant and mix

in w it h sludge, bacteria like Novosphingobium can accidentally attach to the surface and secrete glue-like extracellular substances. As other bacteria attach to the surface and grow, they can even swap DNA with each other. This is how the antibiotic resistance genes are being spread among the community.” Pham added: “We have evidence that the bacteria developed resistance to other antibiotics this way as well, such as aminoglycoside, beta-lactam and trimethoprim.” Now, Li says the lab is further studying the role of Novosphingobium in biofilm formation on microplastics. The team is also seeking to better understand the extent to which such pathogen-carrying microplastics may be bypassing water treatment processes, by studying the resistance of microplastic biofilms during wastewater treatment with disinfectants such as UV light and chlorine. Li said: “Some states are already considering new regulations on the use of microplastics in consumer products. This study raises calls for further investigation on microplastic biofilms in our wastewater systems and development of effective means for removing microplastics in aquatic environments.”

othing seems safe from plastic contamination. A new study by NSF-funded researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography suggests there could be a million times more microplastics in the ocean than previously estimated. Biological oceanographer Jennifer Brandon found some of the tiniest microplastics in seawater at much higher concentrations than previously measured. Her method showed that the traditional ny@visiontimes.com

way of counting marine microplastics is likely missing the smallest particles, suggesting that the number of microplastics in the ocean is off by five to seven orders of magnitude. Brandon now estimates that the ocean is contaminated by 8.3 million pieces of mini-microplastics per cubic meter of water. Her discovery is published in Limnology and Oceanography Letters. Brandon said: “For years we’ve been doing microplastics studies the same way, by using a net to collect samples. “But anything smaller than

that net mesh has been escaping.” Most plastics are so chemically strong that neither microbes in the soil nor the water can break down the elemental bonds. For answers, Brandon turned to salps, gelatinous filter-feeding invertebrates that suck in water to eat and to propel themselves around the upper 6,500 feet of the ocean. Their stomachs were a likely place to find mini-microplastics. Of the 100 salps Brandon surveyed from water samples collected in 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017, 100 percent had mini-microplastics

Rare Meteorite Recovered in UK After Spectacular Fireball In a major event for UK science, the meteorite that fell from the fireball that lit up the sky over the UK and Northern Europe on Sunday, February 28, has been found. Almost 300 g of a very rare meteorite, known as a carbonaceous chondrite, survived its fiery passage through the Earth’s atmosphere and landed on a driveway in the small Cotswold town of Winchcombe.

“Nearly all meteorites come to us from asteroids, the leftover building blocks of the solar system that can tell us how planets like the Earth formed. The opportunity to be one of the first people to see and study a meteorite that was recovered almost immediately after falling is a dream come true!”

Dr. Richard Greenwood, Research Fellow in Planetary Sciences at the Open University was the first scientist to identify and advise on the meteorite. Dr. Greenwood says:

Dr Ashley King .said.

“I was in shock when I saw it and immediately knew it was a rare meteorite and a totally unique event. It’s emotional being the first one to confirm to the people standing in front of you that the thud they heard on their driveway overnight is in fact the real thing.”

landed in a residential garden in 1991. A victory for UK citizen science, the fireball was seen by thousands of eyewitnesses across the UK and northern Europe, many of whom reported it to the UK Meteor Observation Network, and it was captured on many fireball cameras and home surveillance cameras when it fell to Earth at 21:54 on Sunday, February 28. Meteorites are incredibly old — their age of about 4567 million years is much older than any rock from the Earth. Almost all these “space rocks” have been blasted off asteroids and travel for many thousands of years through space before being captured — usually by the Sun, but occasionally by Earth. They travel through the atmosphere, sometimes — like the one that fell in Gloucestershire — producing a bright fireball before landing on Earth. Over 1,000 meteorites the size of a football are believed to fall to Earth every year, however, it is very rare for any of them

to be seen to fall and be recovered. Carbonaceous chondrites, like the one just discovered, are made of a mixture of minerals and organic compounds — including amino acids. They are the most primitive and pristine materials of the solar system and can provide unique information on where water and the building blocks of life were formed and what planets are made from — some of the biggest questions asked by the scientific community. The team believes that more fragments may yet be discovered. This fragile meteorite may be found as black stones or as piles of tiny rocks or even dust. If you are local to the area and find something that could be a meteorite, please be sure to take a photo of it and record its location before collecting the sample using a gloved hand or aluminum foil and contact the Natural History Museum. ther pieces of this exceptional meteorite have now been recovered in the local area. Specialized cameras across the country were able to recreate the flight path, allowing scientists to determine exactly where in the solar system it came from, and predict where it fell. The original space rock was traveling at nearly 14km per second before hitting the Earth’s atmosphere. The meteorite was retrieved in such a good condition, so quickly after its fall, that it is comparable to the samples returned from space missions, both in quality and quantity. Dr Ashley King, UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellow in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Natural History Museum, was among the first on the scene when the meteorite was discovered on Wednesday and has been advising on the handling and care of the

meteorite since. Once the meteorite was identified as genuine, plans were made for it to be safely moved to the Natural History Museum where it will be properly cared for until it begins an official process of classification to establish its validity and scientific significance. A team of specialist scientists from across the UK has been successfully searching the rest of the predicted fall area for more fragments, including colleagues from the University of Glasgow, the University of Manchester, the Open University, the University of Plymouth, and Imperial College London. There are approximately 65,000 known meteorites on Earth. Only 1206 have been witnessed to fall and of these only 51 are carbonaceous chondrites. This is the first known carbonaceous chondrite to have been found in the UK, and it is the first meteorite recovered in the UK in 30 years. The last meteorite that was discovered in the UK was the Glatton meteorite that

How to

Avoid

the

‘Kick the Cat’ Effect By Emma Lu

N

early everyone has experienced the “kick the cat” effect, but what is it exactly? Here’s one example. After his boss heavily criticized him, a man went home and saw his child jumping on the couch, so he yelled at him. Feeling very upset, the child went out and kicked the cat that was rolling around in the yard. The frightened cat fled, running out into the street as a truck drove by. To dodge the cat, the truck driver hit and injured a child on the sidewalk. The famous “kick the cat” effect refers to emotional contagion. Anger and lousy moods pass from high-ranking people to subordinates, from the powerful to the weak, and eventually to the bottom, the most vulnerable, wh o have no place to vent their anger and who then become the ultimate victims. Life is full of people who use kicking the cat as a way to vent their anger. A husband who gets scolded by his boss at work takes it out on his wife and children at home. Another person who had his report criticized by his supervisor and was asked to redo it in the morning took out his frustration on a delivery boy at noon and then gave a bad review on an app later in the day.

People who kick the cat may not be successful in life, but they always find weaker victims on whom they can take out their frustration. University of Michigan psychologist Nandi Nathan found in his study that, on average, 30 percent of a person’s lifetime is filled with bad emotions and they are often caused by these sudden and small troubles. These negative emotions not only affect the person, but also spread to others. In modern society, everyone is a link in the long chain of the “kick the cat” effect. As competition grows at work and in life, people feel more stressed and emotional. If you cannot mitigate the impact of this negative factor in time, you will unknowingly get caught up in the “kick the cat” effect, being “kicked” by others, and then “kicking” others in return. Over time, this forms into a vicious cycle. So, how can you put a stop to the “cat-kicking effect”?

Control your emotions

Pleasant emotions create a healthy mindset in an individual and contribute to a relaxed and joyful atmosphere that will positively affect the people around them. Whereas negative emotions, such as boredom, depression, and anger, create a tense and troublesome atmosphere, spreading to family, friends, and colleagues. Just as a small stone is thrown into the calm water of a pond, the ripples it creates spread far and wide. Emotional pollution can be like a disease infecting the community. Therefore, when things go wrong, first calm down, put yourself in the other person’s shoes, and think differently. You will then be able to look at the situation rationally and those distressing emotions can be channeled and resolved, avoiding many potentially unpleasant reactions.

Three ways to regulate your emotions 1

Stay optimistic during trying times

Appropriate venting of bad feelings

Maintain positive stress and enthusiasm

No matter the difficulties or setbacks you face in life, practice optimism and positivity as there is always a solution. Maintaining an optimistic attitude will often produce positive emotions, confidence, and hope for the future. Appreciating the positive aspects of life and helping others in need even when you are struggling can increase your positive feelings and help you gain perspective.

Confiding your distress and sorrow in someone helps eliminate the worries and depression in your mind and can assist you in achieving peace of mind which is also beneficial to your mental health.

Positive stress is vital in life. It helps us stay focused and motivated, pushing us to work toward goals and to feel good about life. Step outside of your comfort zone by taking on a new responsibility or developing a new skill. Set goals (personal and professional) that are both challenging and realistic. Track your progress to hold yourself accountable.

There are several emergency food items you can preserve and store up for a rainy day.

Kinds of

Food

That Have a Long Shelf Life

7

Corn starch

8

Pasta

9

Honey

Corn starch is the same as rice. As long as you keep it dry and sealed properly, you don’t need to worry about it going off.

As long as the pasta is kept in a cool and dry place, it can be stored for at least 20 years without spoiling.

Honey is also called a superfood. It is rich in antioxidants, which can help suppress coughs and even heal wounds. In 2015, archaeologists discovered 3,000-year-old honey in Egypt that is still edible. This is because of the unique preservative power of honey. It has low water and high sugar content, so bacteria can’t grow in it. Dissolving the honey in warm water yields a similar taste. The sealed honey bottle blocks moisture, which extends the preservation time.

10

Rice

Rice also has no expiration date. It is safe to eat even after many years. Why does some rice become moldy within a half year? That’s because it isn’t stored properly. Rice needs to be stored dry and at low temperatures. Once it gets wet, it will become rancid. Brown rice is unique: it has a high oil content and easily deteriorates. If the rice is stored in the refrigerator, it can last a long time.

11

White vinegar

12

Hardtack

Traditionally, the acidity of the vinegar, obtained from the fermentation of acetic acid bacteria, helps maintain the vinegar for a long time. White vinegar is used in many households for cooking food, cleaning, and disinfecting items and the environment. It plays lots of roles and will not perish easily.

ost people do not go out as much during the COVID-19 pandemic. They have stocked up with food and medicine at home. There are several emergency food items you can depend on for a rainy day that can be stored for long periods without fear of expiration.

1

Jerky

3

Dried beans

5

Liquor

2

Ghee

4

Wax sealed cheese

6

Milk powder

Dried meat cannot only be preserved in the traditional sun-dried way as the Chinese do, but also through drying, aging, and applying salt as is customary for the American Indians. Fully dehydrated meat can last for 50 years.

Beans are a good source of protein. Dried beans that have undergone dehumidification processing and are sealed tightly will prevent bacteria and mold from growing. They can be stored for a long time.

Ghee is purified butter. Produced mostly in Tibet and India, it has a mellow taste and is suitable as a doomsday food. It is the best choice to replace butter.

Dry cheese can be sealed with wax and used as a milk replacement. This is also an excellent food that will last for a long time.

Liquor with more than 10 percent alcohol has disinfecting properties. Liquor doesn’t have any added chemicals and has a wide range of uses: cooking, seasoning, and emergency disinfection for injuries.

Milk powder can also be stored for extended periods and is also a good source of nutrition. Skimmed milk powder can last up to 25 years.

The ingredients of hardtack are very simple: flour, water, and salt. Hardtack can be stored dry for a long time.

Other

faithful stand-by food items

Other ingredients and food items such as tomato sauce can be stored for 18-24 months. Instant coffee can be stored at room temperature for 2-20 years. Sugar cubes can be stored for about two years or longer with proper de-humidification. Pu’er tea is a fermented tea, which can also be dried and preserved. It has a special fragrance, and the longer it is stored, the more valuable it becomes. The wood ear fungus and tangerine peels can also be stored for a long time after sun exposure.

M

any people wonder how to find a good acupuncturist. To answer this simple question, it is important to understand what acupuncture is and how it works. Acupuncture is a treatment modality of ancient Chinese medicine. Along with the modern version of traditional Chinese medicine, ancient Chinese medicine is a complete medical system passed down to us from an unknown prehistoric civilization. Traditionally, Chinese people believed that the art of Chinese medicine was a gift from the divine. This medical system recognizes the anatomy and physiology of the human body just as modern medicine does, yet it also maps out and explains the energetic network of human beings. Although this level of human existence is still invisible to us, we are always experiencing it throughout our lives. The energy that traditional Chinese medicine has mapped out is called qi, a vital life force that keeps the body functioning well physically and mentally. The system of qi circulation is referred to as meridians — a network of energy pathways centered in the major internal organs. Today’s imaging technology has not yet been able to see these meridians.

A

sufficient, smooth, and directional flow of qi keeps the body functioning normally. Any physical, chemical, or emotional stress will compromise the qi and block the meridians. Consequently, this stress causes dysfunctions and symptoms affecting the areas of our body, mood, and mind associated with these meridians. The compromised qi can manifest as chemical, physical, and even structural abnormalities that modern medicine can detect and attempt to treat. There are specific points or tiny areas on the surface of the body that are connected with specific meridians and organ systems. If we stimulate these points with the insertion and manipulation of fine needles, we will be able to open the blocked meridians, redirecting and facilitating an adequate flow of qi. Thus, we can reduce the dysfunction and symptoms the patient is feeling. The treatment will prevent the symptoms from developing into serious illnesses and diseases. However, the most important work is done before needles are inserted. It is the diagnosis and evaluation of what meridians are involved and how the qi is imbalanced.

he diagnosis and the qi evaluation determine the selection of the points and techniques of needling. This diagnostic process requires clinical skills, including tongue and pulse readings that are unique and powerful diagnostic tools in Chinese medicine. The doctor needs a solid and comprehensive knowledge of the energetic systems and their functions to diagnose the patient well. Although the symptoms and dysfunction may respond to the acupuncture treatment immediately after the first session, any chronic condition will require a course of daily treatment to achieve significant improvement. However, in the United States, patients usually can only afford and commit to two or three sessions per week. Thirty sessions of treatment are needed to significantly improve most chronic cases. Furthermore, the acupuncturist should be able to recognize and address the causes of the qi imbalance, provide tools for self-care, and help patients make lifestyle modifications. Just as in choosing any professional for a service, referrals are important. The best types of referrals are ones from your friends and people you trust who have had a positive experience and outcome with the practitioner.

I I

f you do not know anyone who can refer you to a practitioner nearby, you may want to find a few different acupuncturists in your local area and set up some time to interview them. Some good questions to ask them would be how they diagnose their patients and what their treatment plan would entail. You may also want to ask what their experience has been in treating conditions like yours. The bottom line is you want to see if they care about their work and their patients and if they are confident about what they know. A good acupuncturist will use acupuncture as a tool of a complete medical system, rather than use it as a simple needle for simulating your skin, muscles, or nerves based solely on the modern understanding of anatomy. A good acupuncturist is no different from any other health-care professional in terms of having a caring heart, sound knowledge, clinical skills, and the ability to communicate effectively. The acupuncturist needs to be able to develop a therapeutic alliance with patient.

n addition, a good acupuncturist must be able to appreciate the energetic system of the human being as ancient Chinese medicine describes. Because there are no external tools to be able to see this system, the practitioner has to be able to “see” it with a pair of “quantum glasses.” Understanding the energetic nature of a human being is critical for the treatment process. The human body is an open system that constantly exchanges its energy with that of the natural environment and people around it. An acupuncturist can advise patients to be mindful of their surrounding climate changes, behaviors, and interpersonal relationships. Since energy circulates in the meridian systems in an orderly and timely fashion, the acupuncturist should advise patients to maximally live a life congruent with the energetic flow of nature. This includes clear instruction on a good time to rise, rest, exercise, eat, and cleanse. An acupuncturist’s own energy is also important when interacting and intervening with the energy of the patient. A good acupuncturist must cultivate his or her energy to a healthy level and remain very focused during the treatment. Dr. Jingduan Yang is a board-certified psychiatrist and a fourth-generation teacher and practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine. He practices integrative medicine in New York City, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. His website is taoinstitute.com.

A Trending Craft:

IRISH QUILT PATTERNS and have a passion for baking bread and making jellies. Letting two completely opposite sides of you merge so beautifully is the ultimate goal of globe crafting.

By Raven Montmorency

O

ne of the main reasons behind making the world connect virtually was to ensure that cultures can cross borders and mingle without having to leave the comfort of their homes or sacrifice jobs or hobbies. You can always invest time in both your profession and your passion by putting your energy into something like Irish quilt patterns. Some people are great at being a science graduate with a very technical job, but also pen down amazing verses or create scenes from their imaginations that can stir up any soul. The age-old saying of always following your passion often limits the number of passions a person can have. But having a passion and a profession allows you to incorporate various aspects of your life seamlessly. One such passion followed by many is globetrotting. Add to the fact that remote working or becoming a digital nomad is a reality; taking up crafting skills from various corners of the world is also a reality. There are people who work for software development companies based in America when they are living in some idyllic snowclad valley in Europe

Irish quilt patterns, a trending craft for quilters

Irish quilt patterns are trending on many sites across the globe.

Quilting can be traced back to the first Egyptian dynasty, as archeologists have uncovered proof of quilted garments with the depiction of the pharaoh. While the term was coined first in 13th-century England even though the name has a Latin origin, the process of quilting that incorporates sewing many layers of fabric and stitches together has been around for many centuries. One of the best uses of this technique is creating quilted blankets, which can be a montage of memories or simply bind the powers of Celtic symbols with everyday garments. Irish quilt patterns are trending on many sites across the globe mainly due to the fact that the long-chain design is easier to understand and learn and the patterns are not only visually appealing but also easier to pick up via hand using just a needle and threads. Some of the most popular Irish quilt patterns are:

One of the recurring themes in Irish designs has always been the color green. In fact, Ireland and its folktales are somehow always in greenery and amidst its various symbols.

1

Single chain quilt

The most basic design, the single-chain quilt is ideal for beginners to understand and master. But the simplicity of the design can be the perfect gift for any minimalist. The usage of two fabrics and two blocks make this design simple, yet versatile.

2

Celtic knot

The most intricate design often has the simplest making technique and the Celtic knot is a fine example. You need to form bias fabric tubes and then apply them to a fabric that you will use as a background. One of the recurring themes in Irish designs has always been the color green. In fact, Ireland and its folktales are somehow always in greenery and amidst its var-

ious symbols. There are various quilting books that not only take you through the mythology and folklore of Ireland, but they also help you get the techniques right so you too can create a dazzling craft. Whether you are looking to take up a global crafting technique as a hobby or want to make some more income via it, you are sure to fall in love with not just the technique of quilting, but also find the designs of the Irish quilt patterns soothing.

3

Celtic twist block

This is another classic that works up the illusion that you have used four fabrics and have stitched them together. The fact is, few shades are used of the same color and placed on a

background of white. This is another simple technique that is easy to master and create fabulous designs.

4

Fairy ring

If carved motifs are your dream, then you can turn to this simple design that uses appliqued blocks to create the lovely designs of clover leaves that are seen near churches or monuments. The soothing green on green design is another easy-to-master pattern.

5

Connemara flower

If you want to learn the partial seam technique, the Connemara flower is the best design to set your hand to. The main concern for this is to know the correct placement of the fabric and then to create the block. Image: Dreamstime.com © Catherine Jones

ccording to Wall Street behemoth JPMorgan, the fairytale spun by pundits about Reddit’s WallStreetBets organizing to “squeeze” badly positioned hedge fund short sellers of video game retailer Gamestop (NYSE: GME) in what has been affectionately dubbed the “Gamestop Rebellion” is simply false. Peng Cheng, the JPMorgan quantitative and derivatives strategy analyst, wrote to clients in a note: “Although retail buying was portrayed as the main driver of the extreme price rally experienced by some stocks, the actual picture may be much more nuanced,” according to CNBC.
