Multiple States Report Cases of
FULLY Vaccinated Americans With COVID-19
By Jonathan Walker Vision Times
In
Houston, 142 fully vaccinated people were infected with the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2) virus. According to a Houston Chronicle report last week with data from the Houston Health Department, the first cases were reported in January. Full vaccination refers to administering either two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine. The city’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. David Persse, downplayed the data, stating that some fully vaccinated people would inevitably become infected. “This vaccine is not dissimilar from other vaccines in that it gives you some level of protection, but no vaccine is 100 percent effective,” Persse said in a statement. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said that infections in the fully vaccinated are “not at all incompatible with a 90-plus percent vaccine efficacy.” However, similar reports have cropped up all over the United States. In Michigan, 246 residents were reportedly infected after being fully vaccinated for over two weeks, and three of them died. Authorities reported more than 100 such cases, and 168 cases were identified in Oregon with three associated deaths.

I think that there’s probably 150 million Americans who are eager to get vaccinated. And as we expand into the younger age cohorts and a new eligible population… you’re not going to see the demand be as brisk Gottlieb told NPR.
Former FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb anticipates a decrease in the rate of vaccine uptake after approximately half of Americans are vaccinated. Gottleieb visited the USDA headquarters in Washington, D.C., on July 25, 2017. (Image: USDAgov via Flickr CC PDM 1.0)
Notably, a fully vaccinated solid organ transplant patient from Dallas County recently passed away due to COVID19. The patient was thought to be immunocompromised due to the organ transplant and was more likely to contract the virus. Judge Clay Jenkins, the top elected official in the county, said in a statement that immunocompromised individuals would continue to be vulnerable to COVID-19 despite being vaccinated. In total, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified around 5,800 people across the country who have been infected despite being fully vaccinated against Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID19). Of these infected individuals, 396 people, or 7 percent, required hospitalization, and 74 people died. The CDC is actively looking for distinct patterns by analyzing data such as patient location, age, gender, the
type of vaccine administered, and types of coronavirus variants. More than 40 percent of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the fully vaccinated have occurred in people aged 60 or older. Women comprised 65 percent of cases, and 29 percent of cases were asymptomatic. The U.S. recently passed a milestone of distributing over 200 million vaccines. The first 100 million doses were distributed in 89 days, while the rest of the doses took 36 days. Less than 40 percent of Americans have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while around a quarter has received two doses. Experts predict drop in vaccine demand The country is currently vaccinating around one percent of its population daily, but some experts believe that the rate of vaccinations may soon drop. Dr. Scott Gottlieb, a former FDA commissioner and member of the board of

directors at Pfizer, said in an NPR interview that the supply of vaccines might soon outstrip demand. “I think that there’s probably 150 million Americans who are eager to get vaccinated. And as we expand into the younger age cohorts and a new eligible population… you’re not going to see the demand be as brisk,” Gottlieb told NPR. “I think we struggle to get to 160 million. Beyond that, I think it’s going to be difficult. I’m not sure that you have the demand there,” he said. In some states, around 30 percent of the available vaccines are sitting unused. In areas such as Virginia and Lynchburg, many vaccine appointments remain unfilled despite only a tiny proportion of the local population being vaccinated.
India vaccine supply drops due to US embargo
Meanwhile, the U.S. is
also entangled in a conflict with India over vaccine supplies. The Serum Institute of India (SII), which has partnered with AstraZeneca to produce over 300 million vaccines for more than 100 low-income nations by June, asked President Joe Biden to lift the embargo placed on exports of vaccine raw materials. The U.S. invoked the Defense Production Act, which empowers the government to directly control industrial production during emergencies such as the current coronavirus pandemic. The law mandates companies to prioritize the production of materials or services deemed critical for the country’s defense. In extreme situations, the law can be used to block companies from exporting goods to other nations. Adar Poonawalla, CEO of SII, called the embargo “as good as banning vaccines.” He said in an interview with Business Standard, “There is a long list of raw materials which we import from the US – filters, bags, certain media solutions, etc. Developing new suppliers in the eleventh hour will take a bit of time. We will do that. We will not be dependent on the US after six months. The problem is we need it now.” AstraZeneca has sent SII a legal notice for the delay in supplying vaccines, and several Indian states are reporting that their vaccine stocks are dwindling. SII’s production of the Novavax vaccine has also stalled due to supply issues.

Manchin Opposes Tax Hike to Fund Biden Infrastructure Plan By Prakash Gogoi Vision Times
D Project Veritas Catches CNN Technical Director on Hidden Camera Admitting
‘We got Trump Out’ By Arvind Datta Vision Times
A
recent undercover operation conducted by Project Veritas, an independent investigative journalism team, revealed a CNN director admitting the network’s notable bias against former President Donald Trump was not a matter of perception, was part of a plan, and that propaganda campaigns were launched in an effort to ensure Trump was unable to secure a second term. The first of the three videos released by Project Veritas shows CNN Technical Director Charles Chester shedding light on how the network’s agenda to twist public opinion away from Trump and toward Biden was a reality, “Look what we did, we [CNN] got Trump out. I am 100percent going to say it, and I 100percent believe that if it wasn’t for CNN, I don’t know that Trump would have
got voted out… [I] wanted to be a part of that.” Chester cited a specific instance of how his network constructed a narrative meant to discredit the incumbent President, “[Trump’s] hand was shaking or whatever, I think. We brought in so many medical people to all tell a story that was all speculation – that he was neurologically damaged, and he was losing it.” At the same time, Chester said CNN also ran stories to promote an idea of a healthy and fit Joe Biden by displaying images of Biden jogging and wearing aviators to present the image the challenger was what he called a “young geriatric.” Chester said that now that the goal of removing Trump from office has been achieved and the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to “taper off to a point that it’s not a problem anymore,” what would CNN’s next propaganda focus be? The answer is climate
change, “The climate thing is gonna take years. So they’ll probably be able to milk that for quite a bit,” he said to a Project Veritas undercover reporter on hidden camera. Saying that “fear sells,” Chester speculated that the upcoming shift to focus on climate change was taken by CNN President Jeff Zucker. In another clip uploaded to Twitter by Project Veritas Founder James O’Keefe before he was permanently suspended by the social media platform after running the CNN expose, Chester said his network’s coverage of Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz counted as propaganda when asked to define propaganda by the undercover reporter. Chester called Gaetz a “problem for the Democratic Party,” and said CNN is running stories with the aim of hurting his image and reputation. He said, “So we’re going to keep running those stories to keep hurting him and make it so that it can’t
be buried.” “That’s propaganda because it’s helping us (CNN) in some way,” he said. Project Veritas appears to have targeted Chester through Tinder, with an employee from the nonprofit going on five dates with him while wearing a hidden camera, according to Mediaite, who referenced a “source close to CNN.” The final date was at a pancake house located in the neighborhood Chester lived in. It is not known when the actual dates took place. Following the release of the videos, O’Keefe also announced his intention to sue CNN for defamation. “Ana Cabrera is the host that lied about us and said that we were taken down for – she mentioned misinformation… That’s just simply not so… we believe we can win against CNN, so I’m announcing on your show I’m going to sue CNN for defamation,” he said to Fox News.
Nation’s First COVID-19 Passport in New York Faces Criticism By Jonathan Walker Vision Times
A
t the end of March, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the launch of a new digital certificate called the “Excelsior Pass,” which offers proof of the user’s Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID19) test results and vaccination status. Event authorities justified the digital passport as a means to convince the public that safety measures are in place. “Businesses and venues can scan and validate your pass to ensure you meet any COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements for entry. Along with your Pass, you’ll be asked to show a photo ID that shows your name and birth date to verify that the Pass belongs to you. Adults may hold passes for accompanying minors,” 212-730-6963

states the official website. “Once you and your party enter an establishment, you will still be asked to follow State and CDC guidance regarding social distancing, face coverings, and hand hygiene,” the instructions say. Currently, the state is offering three types of
passes: a COVID-19 Vaccination Pass that is valid for a period of 30 days, a COVID19 PCR Test Pass valid until midnight on the third day after the test, and a COVID19 Antigen Test Pass, valid for six hours from the testing time. The Excelsior Pass, which
is voluntary and free of charge, can be stored on a smartphone or printed out and brought to the venue. The system uses IBM’s digital health pass platform, which operates based on blockchain technology. Once the app is downloaded, users are asked to answer a number of personal questions. According to the official website, medical data stored in the app will “not be used for sales or marketing purposes or shared with a third party.” Vaccination and testing data is pulled from the state’s vaccine registry and from a number of testing companies. While Cuomo claims that the COVID-19 passport offers a way for the state’s concert venues, sports arenas, and Broadway theaters to safely reopen, critics believe that their introduction may have unintended consequences.
VISION TIMES
Freedom to participate or discriminatory?
The idea of a vaccine passport raises serious concerns about discrimination, especially with a large proportion of the population that is still not vaccinated. If passports become the norm and the unvaccinated are not allowed to enter venues strictly based on the fact that they have not gotten an experimental vaccine that lacks U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, their basic rights would be violated. Liberty, the UK’s largest civil liberties organization, points out that these passports would create a twotiered discriminatory system even among people who wished to get vaccinated because of unequal access to vaccines. The passport could eventually become the foundation for human rights abuses.
emocrat Senator Joe Manchin has expressed that he is strongly opposed to Biden’s plans to fund his $2.25 trillion infrastructure proposal called the ‘American Jobs Plan.’ The Biden administration has proposed raising corporate taxes in America from 21 to 28 percent. Former President Trump had reduced corporate taxes from 35 percent to 21 percent in 2017. In an interview with Metro News, Manchin said that the proposed tax hike is just too much. “As the bill exists today, it needs to be changed… It’s more than just me, Hoppy… There’s six or seven other Democrats who feel very strongly about this. We have to be competitive, and we’re not going to throw caution to the wind… If I don’t vote to get on it, it’s not going anywhere,” Manchin told the host of “Talkline” in a statement. He said a hike to 25 percent would be supported. The senator feels that anything higher would risk harming the U.S. economy. (Image: Leigh Vogel-Pool/Getty Images)
Infrastructure plan pushed with budget reconciliation process
Manchin’s statements come as Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough granted Democrats permission to use the reconciliation process for the fiscal year 2021, a move that will allow the party to pass the multitrillion dollar infrastructure proposal without any Republican support. Normally, such measures would need a 60 vote support from the Senate to pass the filibuster threshold and get approved. Since the Senate is split 50-50 between both parties, Democrats would need at least 10 Republican senators to support the infrastructure proposal, a highly unlikely event given how the GOP opposes the plan. Reconciliation allows Democrats to pass the $2.25 trillion plan through a simple 51 vote majority. If the result is a tie evenly split along party lines, Vice President Kamala Harris, as the Senate president, can cast her vote to break the tie. Biden’s plan to raise taxes has triggered strong criticism from Republican Party members. Former President Trump has called the decision the “largest tax hike in American history” and a radical move by Biden. He warned that the hike in taxes will only cause millions of jobs, thousands of factories, and trillions of dollars in America to shift to other competitive nations. ny@visiontimes.com

Intelligence Report Highlights
China as a ‘Near-Peer’ Competitor to US By Leo Timm Vision Times
A
recent report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) has warned that China is a “near-peer” competitor to the United States and is challenging Washington in many areas. While pointing out that Beijing’s growing influence represents one of the biggest threats facing America, the report predicts that gray-zone battles for power will intensify between the two nations via cyberattacks, intelligence operations, and influence expansion. However, the gray-zone battles are not expected to incite an all-out war. In terms of regional activities, China is predicted to continue its attempt to intimidate rivals in the South China Sea. In addition to putting pressure on Southeast Asian nations to accept Chinese dominance, Beijing will also try to stake claims over contested waters near Japan. It will pressure Taiwanese authorities to move towards peaceful unification. The report foresees tensions between the two to keep rising as China attempts to isolate the island nation internationally. In an interview with Nikkei Asia, Rachel Esplin Odell, a research fellow in the East Asia Program at the Quincy Institute, stated that China is not likely to make a military move against Taiwan as long as the latter does not intend to declare independence. “Attitudes in Taiwan toward unification have soured in recent years, while attitudes favoring eventual independence have strengthened. But the majority of people in Taiwan favor some maintenance of the status quo, even if more of them now want eventual independence… With what’s happened in Hong Kong, “one country, two systems” is no longer viable in the minds of Taiwan’s people. That framework is a non-starter now, so I think China, if they really want a peaceful “reunification,” should think more

about how to adjust their strategy and engage more with the DPP,” she told Nikkei Asia. The report expects the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to continue expanding overseas military installations and boost its ability to project power abroad. The PLA’s Air Force and Naval divisions are the largest in the region while Rocket Force’s accurate short, medium, and intermediate-range systems are said to be capable of countering the U.S. bases in the region. China is also building a nuclear missile force that features intercontinental second-strike capability. Beijing is looking to double its stockpile of nuclear weapons over the next ten years and also field a nuclear triad. In space, China will succeed in building a Low Earth Orbit space station by 2022 to 2024. It also has plans for setting up a crewed base on the moon. As part of its counterspace operations, Beijing is training the military in ground and space-based anti-satellite weapons. In
terms of cyber warfare, the report admits that China has the ability to cause temporary disruptions to critical infrastructure at a local level in the United States, and Beijing conducts cyber intrusions which affect American citizens.
Threats from Russia, Iran, and North Korea
The report also speaks about the threats posed by Russia, North Korea, and Iran. Moscow has expanded influence in South America by engaging with Venezuela, supporting Cuba, and using arms sales as well as energy agreements to access the natural resources of the region. In North Africa and the Middle East, Russia is positioning itself as a mediator in countries like Libya and Syria, undercutting American influence. Russia is also targeting America’s industrial control systems as well as underwater cables. North Korea has been highlighted as posing an increasing threat to the United States, Japan, and South
Korea. The report warns that North Korea will remain a WMD threat for the near future since Kim Jong-un is strongly committed to the country’s nuclear program. To fund the government’s nuclear and missile activities, North Korea reportedly conducted cyber theft on cryptocurrency exchanges and financial institutions. With regards to Iran, nuclear weapons remain a key issue. The report warns that if sanctions against Iran are not relaxed, officials might consider enriching uranium up to 60 percent, thus bringing it closer to the necessary purity for weapon creation. The country may even design a new 40MW Heavy Water reactor. In fact, the Iranian government has recently announced its decision to produce 60 percent enriched uranium following an Israeli attack. The governments of Germany, France, and the UK have called the decision a serious development. “Iran’s announcements are particularly regrettable given
VISION TIMES
they come at a time when all JCPoA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) participants and the United States have started substantive discussions, with the objective of finding a rapid diplomatic solution to revitalize and restore the JCPoA… Iran’s dangerous recent communication is contrary to the constructive spirit and good faith of these discussions,” the three nations said in a statement.
The pandemic factor
The DNI report predicts COVID-19 to remain a major global threat unless people across the world are vaccinated. Governments of countries like China and Russia are utilizing the pandemic to expand their geopolitical standing by offering vaccines and medical supplies to other nations. Any economic recovery for this year could easily be disrupted by a resurgence of the pandemic. Poorer nations are taking the biggest hit due to the viral outbreak. The number of people suf-
fering from high levels of food insecurity rose from 135 million in 2019 to 270 million in 2020. By the end of this year, the number is expected to touch 330 million. Peacemaking missions, counterterrorism operations, arms control measures, etc. have all been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, making it even more difficult to manage conflict. “The pandemic has disrupted HIV / AIDS treatments and preventative measures in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as measles and polio vaccination campaigns in dozens of countries. World populations, including Americans, will remain vulnerable to new outbreaks of infectious diseases as risk factors persist, such as rapid and unplanned urbanization, protracted conflict and humanitarian crises, human incursions into previously unsettled land, expansion of international travel and trade, and public mistrust of government and health care workers,” according to the report.

ccording to Wall Street behemoth JPMorgan, the fairytale spun by pundits about Reddit’s WallStreetBets organizing to “squeeze” badly positioned hedge fund short sellers of video game retailer Gamestop (NYSE: GME) in what has been affectionately dubbed the “Gamestop Rebellion” is simply false. Peng Cheng, the JPMorgan quantitative and derivatives strategy analyst, wrote to clients in a note: “Although retail buying was portrayed as the main driver of the extreme price rally experienced by some stocks, the actual picture may be much more nuanced,” according to CNBC.

China Threatens Citizens and Forces Foreign Visitors
to Take Made-in-China COVID-19 Vaccine By Arvind Datta Vision Times
L
ocal governments in China are reportedly threatening and intimidating citizens to take the China-made COVID-19 vaccines. In some places, Chinese Communist Party members have begun visiting people door-to-door, telling them to get vaccinated in order to avoid the risk of a low ‘social credit score.’ Having a low social credit score in China essentially deprives a citizen of many of the rights and benefits enjoyed by those with higher scores, including the freedom to travel and find good employment. These threats are
Some local authorities and businesses in China are using threats to get citizens to take the China-made COVID-19 vaccines.
in response to widespread mistrust among citizens of Chinese-made vaccines manufactured by companies like Sinopharm and Sinovac. The town of Wangcheng, in southern Hainan province, brought the incident of citizen harassment to international attention. Authorities in the town distributed notices warning that people who do not receive Chinese coronavirus vaccines will be put on a blacklist that will prohibit them from using public transportation, purchasing food, etc. After the issue blew up, authorities announced that they had canceled such penalties and apologized for the “improper way” they mobi-
lized the vaccination campaign. But it is not just the government pressuring Chinese citizens to be inoculated. Businesses are using their influence as well. A local market authority in Hainan province issued a notice prohibiting the entry of unvaccinated people. This has affected both the market vendors and their customers. One vegetable retailer said to The Epoch Times that the decision has resulted in a one-third drop in sales. As of March 24, authorities placed guards at the market, checking every visitor’s health code before allowing them entry. Meanwhile, Beijing-backed state media outlet Global Times reported the blacklist
threat at Wangcheng giving it their own twist. They claimed that netizens actually supported the government decision. The outlet also quoted an expert to indirectly promote such harsh measures by stating that people who do not get vaccinated are “selfish and ignorant.” Only 4 percent of Chinese citizens have apparently chosen to be inoculated. Another state media outlet Xinhua called the threats issued by authorities “crude” and warned that such actions will only create roadblocks to the national vaccination campaign. Reports of forceful vaccination of Chinese citizens come as Beijing has mandated China-made vaccines for for-
eign visitors. Chinese embassies in at least 23 nations have confirmed the decision, with the foreign ministry stating that travelers will still have to undergo state-run quarantine once they arrive in the communist nation. Criticism has mounted on the policy since Chinesemade vaccines have lower efficacy rates than vaccines made by other companies like Pfizer and Moderna. “It’s very much at the sharp end of vaccine diplomacy… (It’s) essentially saying if you want to visit us, you need to take our vaccine,” Nicholas Thomas, an associate professor in health security at the City University of Hong Kong, told CNN.
Political Shifts Cause Increased Migration from Hong Kong to Canada By Debbie Cho Vision Times

T
Current conditions of Hong Kong migration
he number of Hong Kong residents moving to Canada has increased recently amid the changes in the political climate affecting the Chinese administrative region. The erosion of democracy in Hong Kong has prompted Canada to offer pathways to residency and citizenship to Hong Kong residents looking to resettle abroad.
Historical waves of Chinese immigration to Canada
The Chinese population in Canada was relatively small before 1947, when the 1923 Chinese Immigration Act ended. That Act was similar to The Chinese Exclusion Act in the U.S. that barred Chinese from entering the country, except that the Canadian Act was an exclusion of Chinese women. Chinese immigration to Canada remained low until the late 1960s. Then, waves of Chinese migration to Canada began due to varying political conditions in different territories, including Hong Kong, Mainland 212-730-6963

China, and Taiwan. The bulk of Chinese immigrants that came to Canada between 1968 and 1994 were from Hong Kong (68%), although that trend changed in the mid-1990s, when more Mainland Chinese residents moved to Canada. Historically, political conditions in the territories of China have had a significant impact on migration. In 1978, the open-door policy was implemented in the mainland to encourage growth of the market economy. This led to
Hong Kong’s economic boom, as residents made investments to move factories into China to benefit from cheap labor and land cost. In 1984 the UK finalized the agreement for the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to China under the one country two systems policy, where Hong Kong was to be ruled under independent governance as a territory of China. Later that decade, in 1989, the Chinese Communist Party crushed the pro-democracy movement led by university
VISION TIMES
Recent changes to the political climate in Hong Kong are prompting many residents to shift funds from domestic banks to those in Canada. Reuters has reported the amount transferred from Hong Kong to Canadian banks, as reported by FINTRAC, has risen to record levels in 2020. FINTRAC, which is Canada’s anti-money laundering agency, has been keeping records of transfers of funds over C$10,000 since 2012. In 2020 $34.8 billion was transferred from Hong Kong to Canada, and this figure does not include amounts under C$10,000. The number of Hong Kong residents applying for Canadian Visas has increased 10 percent in 2020 to 8,121 applicants. The increase follows measures implemented by Beijing that undermine the independence of the territory. Millions of Hongkongers took to the streets in 2019 to protest a law that criminalizes acts of “subversion of state power, secession, terrorism, or for-
eign interference.” The widely criticized “National Security Law’ (NSL) was enacted into law in 2020.
Pathway to Canadian residency
Several programs in Canada are making it easier for Hong Kong residents to move to the country. One program is currently allowing students from Hong Kong, who have graduated in the past five years from a Canadian University or equivalent educational institution, to apply for a work permit lasting three years. The permit can then be followed with an application for residency and eventually citizenship. Two additional programs will be rolled out by Canada to allow Hongkongers to reside in Canada. One will allow for individuals with at least one year of work experience, proficiency in English or French, and meeting the educational standards to apply for residency. The other will allow those who have graduated from a Canadian postsecondary school, including university and technical college, to apply for residence regardless of when the graduation date occurred. ny@visiontimes.com

South China Sea Conflict
Philippines Threatens China with Daily Protests By Arvind Datta Vision Times
A
uthorities from the Philippines have warned the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that it will file daily diplomatic protests unless China removes the several dozen ships presently occupying Whitsun Reef, which is also known as Julian Felipe Reef in the Philippines. The reef is located within Manila’s 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The conf lict began last month when approximately 220 Chinese ships moored at the Reef on March 7. They did not exhibit any signs of fishing activity. On March 22, Manila filed a diplomatic protest against Beijing over the issue. The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines claimed, however, that the boats were moored in the region because they were sheltering from rough seas. On April 4, Philippine Defense Secretary

Delfin Lorenzana asked the vessels to leave the region once the weather became good, saying they now “have no reason to stay there.” As of April 5, around 44 Chinese ships are still anchored on the Reef. Lorenzana stated that the continued presence of what he called “maritime militias” in the area is a signal that Beijing further intends to occupy other features of the West Philippine Sea. In a statement, the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) accused

The DFA pointed out that Whitsun Reef is located around 638 nautical miles away from the nearest Chinese landmass of Hainan Island, also rejecting the CCP’s claim that the island is part of China’s “traditional fishing grounds.” The Department reminded the communist regime that “tradition yields to law,” noting that the 2016 South China Sea arbitration tribunal has

already ruled that historic rights that exceed the geographic and substantive limits of maritime entitlements under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) do not have legal validity. On March 23, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused China of violating international laws by militarizing the South China Sea. In a tweet, Blinken reiterated that the United States supports the Philippines and echoed Lorenzana’s sentiment that the Chinese ships counted as a “maritime militia.” According to the South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative (SCSPI), U.S. Navy warships entered the South China Sea on April 4. This includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt nuclearpowered aircraft carrier, Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, and Arleigh Burkeclass destroyer USS Russell. In addition, Australian and Japanese warships have also been spotted in the South China Sea waters.
Vietnam conflict
China’s ambition to dom-
inate the South China Sea has also brought it into conflict with Vietnam. Beijing is apparently building a surface-to-air missile base just 20 kilometers away from its border with the Southeast Asian nation. According to Alexander Vuving, professor at the Daniel K. Inouye AsiaPacific Center for Security Studies in Hawaii, the Vietnam border risks high-level conflict since it is along the South China Sea that Beijing covets so much. He warned that the missile base is a clear signal the CCP is preparing for war. Collin Koh, a maritime security research fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, said that the missile base could be a warning from China given that PetroVietnam is considering exploring the South China Sea for natural gas. “[By installing missiles], they wanted to preempt and, if necessary, stop the other South China Sea claimants from embarking on those offshore exploration projects within claims that China is making,” Koh told Voice of America.

The Shattered Dream of

bout an hour’s drive from Beijing, Xushui County in northern China has seen the ups and downs of the country’s modern history. In the 1950s, local collective farmers in Xushui boasted to Chairman Mao of impossibly large harvests — a story that the communist leader and his supporters promoted nationwide as proof of the Party’s infinite wisdom. What followed was the disaster of the Great Leap Forward, as forced collectivization policies and a crash-course plan to industrialize China led to the biggest famine in history, killing more than 30 million people. Born in Xushui in 1954, Sun Dawu’s first memories were related to starvation. Villagers were reduced to eating cotton and corn stalks by softening them up in limewater. Many did not make it through the famine. While virtually all private business had been banned during Mao Zedong’s rule, economic reforms under Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leader Deng Xiaoping allowed farmers to work and profit from their land, albeit with heavy bureaucratic regulation. Sun would go on to found Dawu Group, an agricultural conglomerate that eventually employed nearly 10,000 people. The company became one of the 500 biggest private enterprises in China, operated many subsidiaries, and ran on an innovative business model that valued workers’ rights and partic-

ipation in the enterprise. Sun himself was a respected figure in the community, and even earned two trips to Zhongnanhai — the Communist Party headquarters in Beijing — where he was invited to speak about issues affecting the rural economy. Despite his contributions, Sun and his Dawu Group could not escape confrontation with the CCP. Periodic clashes with predatory local officials were followed by a farcical show trial in 2003 over “illegally absorbing public deposits.” Sun was barely allowed to keep his business after a plea deal. In 2020, Sun Dawu, members of his immediate family, and key executives in the Dawu Group were detained. Their lawyers struggle to contact them.
In 2020, Sun Dawu, members of his immediate family, and key executives in the Dawu Group were detained. Their lawyers struggle to contact them.
The following are excerpts from Sun Dawu: A Chinese Agricultural Entrepreneur’s 36-year Dream in the Era of Reform and Opening Up, a two-part article published on China Change by the site’s editor, Yaxue Cao. The article has been lightly edited to fit the format of this publication, and may be read in its original form on chinachange.org.
A company built from eggs
Reforms came to China’s rural regions in 1984. Communes were dissolved, and land was contracted to individual farmers to cultivate. In 1985, Sun Dawu encouraged his wife Liu Huiru , who lived in their home village Langwuzhuang, to team up with four other families to rent around 100 mu (1 mu is a traditional Chinese measure of land,
about one-sixth of an acre) of uncultivated land at 6 yuan a mu per year. This land was remote, far from town and even farther from the county seat, with no water, electricity, or roads. When it rained, their bicycles would get stuck in the mud and couldn’t be pulled out. In the first year, they planted sunflowers and fruit trees, raised pigs and chickens, and lost money. The other four families clamored to end the partnership. Sun was still working at the bank at the time. After compensating each of the other households 2,000 yuan for their losses, he and his wife contracted for the land on their own. Starting with just a handful of chickens and pigs, Sun and his family doubled and redoubled their production. Dawu Group was hatching 20 million chicks a year, and the company’s feed factory produced 60,000 tons annually. Hard work aside, Sun invested in training skilled workers and quality management from the start and establishing ties with the provincial research institutes. This can be seen in an
Sun advocated that the government should break up the complicated bureaucracy of the planned economy era and merge agencies into a single agricultural service bureau to avoid exposing farmers to the overbearing and often contradictory interventions of enforcement officers from one department after another.

anecdote Sun told: When the chicken farm had just started in 1985, the Shijiazhuang Feed and Breeding Institute published a recruiting drive in a newspaper in Hebei. The tuition fee was 1500 yuan; Sun sent a student to the class where he was the only student to two teachers. In 19 89, Sun officially resigned from his position at the bank, and devoted his full efforts to Dawu company’s development. “My bu siness was created by bringing land under the plow,” Sun told an audience at Peking University in 2003. “It is a company built from eggs.”
Rural issues ignored by the Communist Party leadership
listened to reports and were pleased to hear that farmers have increased grain production, but criticized people when they heard that farmers were making less. People who told the truth were seen as “politically immature” and “unreliable.” Sun Dawu’s first visit to Zhongnanhai was in December 1998. He went to the State Council located at the northern end of the leadership complex to attend a seminar for cadres to develop rural markets. At that time, China’s exports were falling sharply, the national purchasing power was declining, and the government was eager to develop the voachinese rural market. The meeting lasted two hours, and Sun Dawu spoke for 40 minutes. He advocated that the government should break up the complicated bureaucracy of the planned economy era and merge agencies into a single agricultural service bureau to avoid exposing farmers to the overbearing and often contradictory interventions of enforcement officers from one department after another. He also proposed that rather than prohibiting farmers from borrowing money, the state should allow private lending, “so that farmers and rural areas have a mechanism they can use to put in their own sweat equity, which is conducive to the industrialization of agriculture.” “I cherish this opportunity, a rare one to make a direct report to the central leadership,” he said, concluding his speech, “so I can’t wait to speak and ask the leaders to take note.” But on his way out, a secretary told him that it would be his last time in the building.
“ To hell with unified purchase and sale of crops, monopolized pig slaughtering, commercial permits, technology approvals, financial oppression, and land control. Let each rural family be a sovereign civil entity that assumes responsibility for its actions.”
From 1982 to 1986, the Communist Party issued the No. 1 document for five consecutive years, focusing on the “three rural issues,” of agriculture, rural areas, and farmers. The Party made specific plans for rural reform and agricultural development, which overturned the longstanding policies of collectivized farming and strictly applied communist economic ideology. However, many aspects of the CCP bureaucracy, much of which existed to benefit the Party’s officials, continued to make life hard for China’s vast rural population. In 2000, a Party secretary in central China, Li Changping, described how the rural population — men, women and children — were fleeing the countryside in large numbers and went out to work in the cities, whether there were jobs in the cities or not, and that as much as 65 percent of the land was deserted. “Hundreds of millions of farmers do not have confidence in the central government’s rural policy,” Li observed. The higher leaders
Contributing to a ‘great mission’
Sun Dawu was not an enemy of the Communist Party. A member of the Party himself, he said he was a staunch “Marxist” and believed in communism, yet dreamed that people could live prosperously and peacefully, and that China could become a democractic republic. While Sun hoped for a constitutional democracy in China, he rejected the notion of a multi-party polity. He feared that democracy would bring instability. He was encouraged by the new Communist Party General Secretary Hu Jintao’s speech about “respecting the authority of the Constitution,” hop-
scared even if you take dynamite to blow us up.” The reason he said this is because he believes that the Dawu Group belongs not just to him, but to society as a whole. Despite not being focused on pursuing profit, by 2003 the Dawu Group never experienced a business loss among its 17 subsidiaries. Product sales had been smooth and stable for nearly 20 years. Only in 2003, the year he and corporate executives were arrested, did Dawu Group lose 5.8 million yuan because of disruption.

ing that the Communist Party would accomplish this “great mission.” Sun Dawu called for a law that he named “Interim Rural Law” to protect farmers, keep regulations at bay from all sorts of bureaucracies, and give farmers the space to thrive. “To hell with unified purchase and sale of crops, monopolized pig slaughtering, commercial permits, technology approvals, financial oppression, and land control. Let each rural family be a sovereign civil entity that assumes responsibility for its actions.” “As such, farmers can voluntarily choose what they do for living where they are, and whose labor supplements each other. They can work in a factory, grow crops, or be a boss, as they choose.” A second summoning to Zhongnanhai again received a cold response. However, Sun Dawu diligently implemented his ideas within the Dawu Group. In the early 1990s, Sun Dawu proposed that the guiding principle of the Dawu Group was “not to aim for profit, but place development as the main goal, with common prosperity
as the destination.” The K-12 Dawu School, established in 1998, has more than 2,000 students enrolled. The free technical school of Dawu trains students from all over the country, driving the development of thousands of chicken farmers and their farms around the country. With 1,000 beds and 32 departments, Dawu Hospital is a not-for-profit hospital, providing services at a very low charge and in some cases, for free. Although Dawu Group was a family business, Sun Dawu has repeatedly said that private enterprise is merely a means of production and operation, through which to create social wealth and serve the community. By contrast, government officials are the ones who seem to harbor an ingrained disdain and prejudice toward private business. When Sun Dawu raised his lawsuit against the Land Bureau, the bureau officials threatened to bulldoze the Dawu Group. In response, Sun Dawu said, “I’m not
On November 11, 2020, Sun Dawu was again arrested, this time for the “crime” of “provoking quarrels” and “disrupting production.” Arrested with him were his wife, two sons and daughtersin-law, Dawu Group’s senior executives, and nearly the entire management of Dawu’s 28 subsidiaries. The company’s assets were promptly frozen.
2003 seemed like a good time to look back on the past and hope for a better future, not just for Sun Dawu, but also for many other Chinese people. China had come far from the Great Leap Forward of 1958 and the great famine that ensued, as far from hell as is heaven. The future, undoubtedly, was full of greater hope, which seemed to be at one’s fingertips. But two months later, in May 2003, Sun was arrested on suspicion of “illegally receiving public depositions.” The news shocked the nation. That October, he was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison with a four-year reprieve. Sun was released and allowed to continue running his company. When Sun Dawu was jailed in 2003, Dawu had operated for 18 years; when Sun Dawu was again arrested in late 2020, nearly another 18 years had passed. In the second 18 years, Dawu Group had enjoyed two-digit annual growth, its subsidiaries grew from 17 to 28, and its assets grew more than tenfold. On November 11, 2020, Sun Dawu was again arrested, this time for the “crime” of “provoking quarrels” and “disrupting production.” Arrested with him were his wife, two sons and daughters-in-law, Dawu Group’s senior executives, and nearly the entire management of Dawu’s 28 subsidiaries. The company’s assets were promptly frozen. Following his arrest, Sun was placed under residential surveillance at a designated location (RSDL), and funneled into the black hole of the extra-judicial system. He has not been able to meet with a lawyer, and no information is available on his case. Yaxue Cao, editor of the website China Change, writes: “At first, there was still porridge to eat, even though it was ‘so thin you could see your reflection in it’; then, even this kind of porridge had run out as well; then were reduced to eating the stalks of cotton and corn softened up by soaking them in lime water.”

Less than 24 Hours a Day
The Rotation of the Earth Accelerated
By Vision Times Staff
2021 will be the fastest year in history
The Earth rotates on its axis once a day, and it orbits the sun once a year. It takes 24 hours to complete a rotation; hence, there are 24 hours in a day. Peter Whibberley, a senior research scientist at the National Physical Laboratory's time and frequency group, said, "The speed of the Earth's rotation is faster than at any time in the past 50 years." Research data shows that the rotation speed of the Earth is indeed accelerating. Global events such as earthquakes
"The rotation of the earth is accelerating" has recently come to the top of Weibo's popular search list. Studies have shown that since the middle of 2020, Earth's rotation speed is accelerating, the fastest it has been in the past 50 years, which means that a day is now less than 24 hours!
and glacial melts cause a mass redistribution, resulting in the Earth spinning faster. As the Earth's rotation gradually speeds up, the average day will be 0.5 milliseconds faster than before, making the day shorter and shorter. Based on this calculation, 2021 will be the fastest year in history.
Time is Faster
The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) has added 27 leap seconds since 1972 to make the Earth's time and atomic clock consistent with the Earth's rotation speed. However, there has been no leap second additions since
December 2016, and with Earth's faster rotation, it is doubtful that there would be any additions in 2021. A firstever negative leap second may be on the horizon. For thousands of years, the Earth's electromagnetic field had a natural frequency pulsation of 7.83 hertz on average,
called the Schumann resonance. But since 1980, the resonance frequency has gradually increased. Due to this increasing pulse rate, we feel that time is speeding up; 24 hours now is perceived as only 16 hours. The universe is expanding faster! Time passes faster! It feels as if we only have 16 hours a day, so will our working day still be 8 hours? If the Earth's rotation continues to accelerate, it may be necessary to readjust clocks worldwide and remove one second from the global clock. As the great boxer Muhammad Ali once said: "Don't count the days, make the days count." So live life the best you can! Time is short!
New Study Proves that Lake Mien was Created by a Meteorite Impact (Image: AdobeStock)

olcano or meteorite? During the last 100 years, two different theories have been put forward to explain the origin of Lake Mien. But in a new study, researchers from Lund University can finally establish that the Småland lake was formed by a giant celestial body. For a long time, it was thought that the circular lake Mien in southern Småland was the remains of a volcano. But as early as 1910, geologist Arvid Högbom put forward a pioneering idea that the lake could instead be the result of a meteorite impact about 120 million years ago — a theory that has been prevalent in the research world since the 1960s. Despite a number of findings that support this, there has been stubborn oppo-

sition, mainly from the public. But in a new study, published in the scientific journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science, a research team from Lund University has found decisive evidence for the meteorite theory. The researchers have discovered a mineral called reidite, which can only be
created by the extreme pressures that occur during meteorite impacts. Josefin Martell, a doctoral student in geology at Lund University, said: “We have examined hairthin parts of the mineral zircon in rock samples from Mien. It is inside these shocked zircon grains that we have managed to find traces

of the high-pressure polymorph reidite that acts as a kind of time capsule from the meteorite impact.” Equivalent to the power of 1,000 atomic bombs Reidite is formed at extremely high pressures, about 30 gigapascals. It can be compared with the pressure that prevails approxi-
mately 1,000 kilometers below the Earth’s surface. The only natural process that can give rise to this in a matter of seconds is precisely meteorite impact, Josefin Martell said: “The celestial body caused the bedrock to melt. The crater that formed was originally around 9 kilometers in diameter. The force required to form one corresponds to about 1,000 atomic bombs.” The research team at Lund University hopes that the discovery now puts an end to the discussion about the origin of the pike-rich lake Miens. Josefin Martell believes that once and for all, it is time to establish Mien as a so-called impact structure, saying: “The residents of Tingsryd and the surrounding area should feel proud. Not many people have the opportunity to swim in an old impact structure.”

Beauty is a blessing By Vision Times Staff
B
lessings come in many different forms from health to wealth to beauty but beauty is normally something that people enjoy seeing with their eyes without remembering that it is a hidden gem within many as well. Like with anything, a blessing has its inevitable reasons, just as wealth comes from charity; respect comes from humility, and a beautiful face comes as a gift from God or heredity. The characteristics of the face are related to the genetic factors of the parents, the shape of the face and the body are also related to genetics. The degree of beauty one obtains depends on the living habits and experiences of the previous life. The heart also plays a significant role in the make-up of a person's inner beauty. The projection of the inner heart and behavior that has been cultivated for a long time. When people reach middle age, their faces tend to show signs of things that influenced their personalities. Generous people usually have a happy face, mild-tempered people have a soft and beautiful face, and overly strong people always have a fierce face. Many middle-aged and elderly women with
poor personalities usually look bad. Therefore, middle-aged people should be responsible for their appearance and it starts with compassion. Compassion is an important factor. More caring people tend to emit an overwhelming light from the inside out, making people look at them more and more happily, and are more likely to be friendly. However, people who are selfish, cunning, and mean are unattractive. Beauty comes in different forms and those who have similar hearts can see it, therefore if you want to look beautiful or be seen that way it starts with having beauty in the heart and the soul. Here are a few ways to project beauty: • If you want to look beautiful, you must first become beautiful in your heart and soul. • If you want to look beautiful, be compassionate. • If you want to look beautiful, think of others without being selfish. • If you want to look beautiful, be a blessing to others.
Three Features of a “Lucky Face” By Vision Times Staff "One's appearance reveals one's heart " is a phrase we often hear. A person’s good fortune is often revealed on their face. As the saying goes: "Each has their own destiny, do not envy others". And you can tell whether a person has "good luck” by looking at these three features on their face:
1. Good eyebrows and eyes
The lucky man has a kind face, and the kindness will emanate from inside to the surface. And a blessed person often has a kind-eyed, charitable appearance. Such a person, easy to get along
A blessed person always has a pleasant look on his face, making people feel good to be around him
with, takes the initiative to approach others and natural blessings come easily to him. On the other hand, the space between the eyebrows can cause some people to appear angry, be less openminded, and have an irritable temper. Stay away from such a person, who makes people feel uncomfortable, as natural blessings are hard to come by for this person. But a person's appearance is not static, and can be changed with the inner heart. Therefore, as long as you often examine your own state of mind, and maintain peace and tranquility, the hostility will naturally go away.
2. Optimistic smile
People always say: Luck usually follows those who
love to smile. So if a person wants to be blessed, start by learning to smile. If the eyes are the windows of the soul, then the smile can be considered a person's facade. Smiles are the most inexpensive, but also the most effective mode of communication. A person who wears a smile on his face every day must be full of joy, giving people a warm and comfortable, positive feeling, and anyone who sees it is happy to approach the person. The person who always has a smile on his face will find that life will be optimistic and positive, and will have natural blessings. Therefore, no matter how bad things are, perhaps it is a test given to us by God. As
long as we are not discouraged and demoralized, and face issues with an optimistic and positive attitude, then blessings will come to us.
3.Modesty and humility
The true wise man often has a low-key and humble personality. A person showing off too much and loving the limelight will only bring disaster to himself. When a person knows how to be low-key and humble, his heart will be broad and wide and he will naturally prosper. When a person is arrogant, he always feels proud and complacent. Then as others avoid him blessings will be few and far between for this person. If a person knows how to be humble, then he will main-
tain a gracious heart, treat everyone kindly, and he will have many blessings. A truly wise and blessed person is never domineering in nature and is always lowkey and humble. Our state of mind determines our appearance. A blessed person always has a pleasant look on his face, making people feel good to be around him. A blessed person always smiles and faces life with a positive and optimistic attitude. A blessed person, although low-key and humble, can clearly feel the charm that he radiates. Such a person, no matter where he goes, will be welcomed by others. Do you want to have a "lucky face"? Then work on these three points!

10 Ways to Keep Your
Nails Beautiful Naturally By Raven Montmorency
T
he first impression often is the strongest and while a smile does matter, nails also play a vital role in creating a strong and positive impact. Whether you go to a nail salon for a manicure and pedicure or simply stay satisfied with thoroughly scrubbing your hands and nails with a loofah, caring for your nails is a part of a self-care routine that you need to incorporate into your daily cleaning routine. Many people have the habit of biting their nails when stressed or it has become an action deeply rooted in their subconscious, but it is not always true that chewing on nails will make them rot. The main reason you should not chew on them is that chewing often destroys the shape of the nails making them grow in a mangled and uneven way. Adobe Stock
What are the signs of healthy nails?
Another thing that you should consider is whether your nails are healthy or not. You may not chew them, but your nails might still be brittle and break easily. In fact, many studies have revealed that your nails often show signs and symptoms of other underlying health concerns, like very pale nails, which can often be indicative of anemia. That said, the nails too have their own indicators of if they are feeling well or not. If you want to know whether your nails are healthy or not, look for these signs: ▲ Pinkish white nail plates ▲ Existence of cuticles ▲ White tips of the nails and the elongated parts are of equal length in all the nails ▲ The half-moon at the base is prominent
Ways to naturally care for your nails
Often, time plays a constraint in making appointments with nail salons, but when you are at home, you can always follow some age-old tips that not only will ensure that your nails are beautiful but also positively affect your overall health.
1.Healthy diet
The first thing that often solves many of the problems is finding and maintaining a proper and balanced diet. Ensure that your diet is rich in vitamins and if required do consult a doctor to add required vitamin supplements to your daily diet. This will work wonders not only on your nails, but also on your hair and skin.
6.Keep nails away from harmful chemicals
When you do dishes or wash clothes with your hands, you are subjecting your nails to chemicals that are harsher on them. To keep your nails free from contact with such chemicals, wear gloves while doing household chores.
2.Trimmed nails
Long nails might seem fashionable, but if you have a really hard-working schedule, you should consider keeping your nails trimmed. Some people are blessed with fast-growing nails, but whatever be the rate of growth of the nails, keeping them trimmed not only helps maintain the shape but also will save you from the heartache of broken nails.
7.Try lemon scrubbing
Another great way to keep your nails clean and strong is to use lemon. Take a lemon slice and rub it on the nails thoroughly. Keep it on till the juice dries and wash off with lukewarm water.
3.Keep cuticles moisturized
Nails are dead skin, but the base of the nails and the cuticles are not. These need miniaturization and the cuticles often suffer the most, especially if you have dry skin. Moisturizing the cuticles prevents chapped and tearing of the skin, especially since cuticles are harder and more prone to drying. Try an aloe vera or cocoa butter moisturizer for these are rich in vitamin E.
8.Keep nails dry
Whenever you get your hands wet make sure that you dry them using a proper towel rather than letting the water cool off from the skin. Wet nails are often more prone to breaking.
4.Baking soda is your friend
Baking soda is known to work wonders as a gentle exfoliator, but did you know that this wonder scrubber also helps you get at the deeply ingrained dirt that seems to never be apart from your nails.
9.Avoid acrylics and gels
While this looks great, acrylics and gels are often known to cause damage to your nails. While acrylics have harmful chemicals, gels use a quick-dry technique that causes cracking of the cuticle.
5.Know the right way to file nails
Contrary to what you see on TV, filing nails is not taking the rough nail filer and going zig and zag on the nails. Filing is always done in one direction and always uses a softer nail filer.
10.Opt for natural nail polishes
Parabens and sulfates are bad not only for your hair but also for your nails. Avoid polishes that contain these ingredients.
Healthy nails not only make you feel good, but they also brush up your confidence. Try going natural as much as you can. One of the best ways to ensure moisture and clean nails is using olive oil as a moisturizer. Not only is it natural, but it’s also rich in vitamin E, which cares for the nail from deep down. Whether this will help your nails grow or not is a matter of debate, but moisturizing definitely helps keep the cuticles stay strong. With these natural ways, you can always flaunt the best aspects of yourself whenever you step out of the house.

rinking coffee is a morning ritual for most people. Coffee drinkers will tell you that it wakes them up and makes them more alert. So it's no surprise that coffee has become a workplace staple as workers reach for a cup of joe during their breaks. Coffee has many health benefits, and there are some things about it you might not know.

In two research studies, researchers from Imperial College London and the International Agency for Research on Cancer analyzed data on the health and coffee drinking habits of more than 500,000 people in 10 European countries or regions, including the United Kingdom. Studies have shown that drinking three cups of coffee a day is related to a reduced risk of death. Researchers believe that this is related to the antioxidant plant compounds contained in coffee. In a survey of 185,000 participants from different ethnic backgrounds, American scientists also showed that the death rate of people who drink coffee is lower than that of people who do not drink coffee.
Stress e v lie e R Coffee relieves stress by triggering the "happiness hormone," dopamine. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, causing the brain to release more dopamine, making us feel happier.

Loss ht ig
For people who'd like to lose weight, drinking coffee may assist in the process. However, coffee intake alone does not bring about weight loss. Coffee can help reduce weight because it can reduce hunger and the short-term desire to eat. Caffeine also increases energy consumption, burning off more calories.
Coffee is a healthy drink that contains hundreds of biologically active compounds that can bring about health benefits. Caffeine can make us more focused; that is, it will make us concentrate better. Also, drinking sweet coffee with sugar can activate certain parts of the brain and make people learn better. However, drinking coffee on an empty stomach might damage your stomach lining and cause heartburn.

According to a study conducted by Johns Hopkins University, caffeine may enhance long-term memory. During the research, they showed a series of images to the participants. On the second day, the participants took 200 mg of caffeine. They conducted an experimental test and found that the participants could better distinguish these same pictures from similar pictures.
Because of the presence of caffeine, coffee can relieve pain. Of course, its effect can only be mild. However, for migraines or headaches caused by stress, coffee might help because the caffeine helps reduce inflammation. But strangely, the factors that make caffeine effective in relieving pain may also cause headaches. As caffeine narrows the blood vessels around the brain, the blood vessels will swell again, causing pain when you stop taking caffeine.

Both tea and coffee are considered part of a balanced diet, but drinking too much can increase blood pressure. The health organization pointed out that drinking more than four cups of coffee a day may cause blood pressure to rise. As part of a balanced diet, drinking tea and coffee is beneficial, but it must be clear that these beverages are not your primary or only liquid source.

Nutrients essential for optimal eye health, like DHA, carotenoids and vitamin E can be increased through dietary intake.
xidative stress is the damage to cells from environmental factors, solar radiation or chemicals. In the back of the eye is the retina. It is lined with light-sensitive tissue that captures light from the lens and converts the light into neural signals that are transmitted to the brain through the optic nerve for eyesight. The retina is comprised of one of the most metabolically active tissues in the human body and is subject to oxidative stress caused by the metabolic activity. The tissues in the retina undergo prolonged stimulation by light, which causes lightinduced damage to the cells in the retina. The macula is a small yellow area at the center of the retina that provides most of the color vision and the ability to see fine details. The macula contains two main carotenoids or pigments, lutein and zeaxanthin, which absorb harmful ultraviolet and blue light that enter the eye, reducing damage to the eye from harmful light by acting as a filter and as "internal sunglasses." Carotenoids are pigments produced by plants and they serve two key roles. They absorb light energy for use and Pixabay are antioxidants as
they deactivate free radicals in plants. The carotenoids in the macula give it its yellow color. Lutein and zeaxanthin are deposited up to five times higher in the macula region than in other parts of the retina. Aside from filtering harmful light, they also help to prevent oxidative stress, serving as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is the primary structural fatty acid of the gray matter of the brain and the retina. In the day-to-day use of the eyes, many DHA fatty acids on the retina are easily oxidized by light stimulation and the retina can become inflamed. The human body has many ways to fight the oxidative stress caused by light. Vitamin E, lutein and zeaxanthin are the most important nutrients in these protective mechanisms. In addition, DHA Pixab fatty acid and ay carotenoid levels can be increased through the diet. Nutrients essential for optimal eye health, like DHA, carotenoids and vitamin E can be increased through dietary intake. Simply incorporating more relevant foods into the diet can increase their levels in the cells. The National Nutrition Survey found that the vitamin E intake of adults accounts for only 68% of the recommended amount. Studies have shown
that the daily intake of nuts is less than 30% of the recommended amount and the daily intake of vegetables is only 60% of the recommended amount. Insufficient amounts of carotenoids and vitamin E in the diet will result in a deficiency. Foods high in DHA fatty acids include wildcaught salmon and fatty fish like mackerel and sardines, flaxseeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and olive oil. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant in the human body as it neutralizes free radicals that can damage cells. Vitamin E also contains anti-inflammatory properties. Nuts are a good source of vitamin E and it is beneficial to eat vitamin E in all of its different forms. In a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, regular consumption of nuts every week can reduce the risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration. To improve the symptoms of eye strain and fatigue, nutritionists recommend incorporating nuts into the diet to increase the levels of vitamin E and to protect the eyes. A 20-gram pack of almond nuts can provide almost 40% of the recommended amount of vitamin E. Eat-

daily amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin and vitamin E can improve eye health. Green, leafy vegetables and fruit contain high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin. Vegetables like kale, spinach, broccoli and orange vegetables and fruits like oranges, nectarines and squash contain high levels of the two carotenoids. Egg yolk, corn and the dried fruit of Lycium barbarum also have high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin. Foods high in vitamin E contain eggs, avocadoes and a variety of nuts like sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts and hazelnuts. It is never too late to start incorporating more carotenoids and vitamin E into your diet for improved eye health.
