Chinese Scientists Looked Into
Weaponizing Coronaviruses According to Dossier By Todd Crawford Vision Times
Chinese Communist Party is required about the origins of Covid-19.”
The U.S. State Department has obtained documents indicating that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has studied the possibility of using coronaviruses for biological warfare, as reported by The Australian. Published in 2015, the documents were the work of military scientists and senior Chinese public health officials and were purportedly uncovered as part of the State Department’s efforts to determine the origins of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The Australian reported that “some of China’s senior public health and military figures are listed among the 18 authors of the document, including the former deputy director of China’s Bureau of Epidemic Prevention, Li Feng.” Additionally, 10 of the authors were scientists and weapons experts affiliated with the Air Force Medical University, which is run by the PLA in western China’s Xi’an.
Virus origins remain unclear

‘Weaponized and unleashed in a way never seen before’
The Australian employed digital forensics expert Robert Pottinger, who has worked for the U.S., Australian and Canadian governments, to verify the authenticity of the documents. The documents describe the manipulation of coronaviruses as being able to herald a “new era of genetic weapons.” The authors also wrote that coronaviruses can
be “artificially manipulated into an emerging human d isease virus, then weaponized and unleashed in a way never seen before.” Reporting on the document, titled “The Unnatural Origin of SARS and New Species of Man-Made Viruses as Genetic Bioweapons,” has been called ‘outright lies’ by CCP officials. The revelations add to suspicion that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) considers biological warfare a significant factor in a war
against its adversaries. The document states that “following developments in other scientific fields, there have been major advances in the delivery of biological agents. For example, the newfound ability to freeze-dry micro-organisms has made it possible to store biological agents and aerosolise them during attacks.” They illuminate the potential for an airborne virus to collapse the medical systems of targeted countries; a strategic advantage in any mod-

ern war and currently a stark reality for authorities across the globe fighting to contain COVID-19 outbreaks. If genuine, the documents would indicate a belief in Beijing that, in the event of a third world war, biological weapons would be the ‘core’ for victory and outlines the perfect conditions to release them. The Australian Senator for Victoria, James William Paterson stated, “These revelations demonstrate exactly why nothing less than complete transparency from the
Questions still remain concerning the origins of SARSCoV-2. Speculation has flourished since the early days of the pandemic concerning what role, if any, the CCP had in the outbreak of the pandemic. Skeptics of the official narrative from Beijing — that humans contracted the disease at a wet market in Wuhan — point to the presence of China’s sole accredited biosafety level 4 (BSL4) lab in the city. Previous reports have confirmed that coronaviruses were regularly experimented with at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as the facility is called. The WIV lab specializes in bat-borne viruses. To enter, one is required to pass through airlocks, chemical showers and to don a full body suit. While most scientists have stated that there is little evidence that COVID-19 has its origins in a lab, the hypothesis has not been ruled out completely.

TSMC’s Chairman, Founder
Express Disapproval of
Moving Manufacturing to US From Taiwan By David Wagner Vision Times
I
t has been about a year since the dominant computer chip company Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd (TSMC) has announced plans to open a factory in Arizona. Recently, however, TSMC Chairman Mark Liu and TSMC founder Morris Chang have spoken out about their misgivings about opening factories in the U.S. In an effort to boost U.S. standing in the midst of a worldwide computer chip shortage, President Joe Biden set aside $50 billion in his infrastructure proposal to support the American semiconductor industry. The proposal has gained lots of support from those hoping to not fall behind in a computer chip competition that Asian
countries have an edge on. But according to Wall Street Journal, some conservatives feel that the semiconductor industry should not be federally subsidized. Cesar Ybarra, Senior Director of Legislative Affairs of FreedomWorks, said U.S. leadership in semiconductors “is a laudable goal that should be funded by private enterprise and not the American taxpayer.” TSMC is the largest chipmaker in the world and unveiled plans to build a $12 billion factory in Arizona back in May 2020. According to an article on the Fierce Electronics website, in a recent interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” TSMC Chairman Mark Liu believed that U.S. companies and the government should not be focusing on moving chip manufacturers to the U.S.—
it would be more effective to focus on paying attention to research and development and global collaboration. When asked: “Should Americans be concerned that most chips are being manufactured in Asia today?” Liu responded: “I understand their concern first of all. But this is not about Asia or not Asia. I mean, the [recent chip] shortage will happen no matter where the production is located because it’s due to the Covid.” “I think the U.S. ought to pursue to run faster, to invest in R&D, to produce more Ph.D., master, bachelor students to get into this manufacturing field instead of trying to move the supply chain which is very
costly and really non-productive. That will slow down innovation because of people trying to hold on their technology on their own and forsake the global collaboration,” Liu said.
Hard to find competent workers
TSMC founder Morris Chang also spoke publicly about the downsides to U.S.
manufacturing at a forum hosted by Taiwanese media outlets, which was reported on by Asian Times. “The United States stood out for cheap land and electricity when TSMC looked for an overseas site but we had to try hard to scout out competent technicians and workers in Arizona because manufacturing jobs have not been popular among American

people for decades,” Chang said. Chang praised the “workhorse mentality” and “deep pool of high-caliber, industrious talent” in Taiwan’s computer chip production sector. He said that even with government investments and subsidies from other countries, production and manufacturing costs would be higher anywhere outside of Taiwan. In particular, the Chinese Communist Party spent billions in subsidies, which has not got them very far in the current race between the two leaders — Taiwan and South Korea — whose manufacturing capabilities are still five years ahead of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) and its mainland Chinese peers. “It was a breeze for us to rotate technicians and staff among the three fabs across the island and when employees change over from one location to another, they even do not need to move their homes thanks to Taiwan’s bullet trains and highways and well-rounded transport and logistical support,” said Chang. “It’s unlikely we can replicate all these in Arizona.”

Melinda Was Upset With Bill Gates After He Met Jeffrey Epstein By Jonathan Walker Vision Times
J
effrey Epstein, who was the center of a sex-trafficking storm until his suicide in August 2019, knew many powerful people who all came under scrutiny after his horrible crimes were revealed. Among the many illustrious names was that of Microsoft founder and billionaire, Bill Gates, who is currently in the midst of divorcing his partner of three-decades, Melinda Gates. A report by The Daily Beast, citing persons familiar with the situation, claims that Melinda was put off by Epstein when she met him and warned her husband against associating with the man. Melinda met with Epstein in September 2013 on the day she accepted the Lasker212-730-6962

Bloomberg Public Service Award together with her husband Bill. According to the report, the meeting ended up being a big turning point in the couple’s relationship. Several of Melinda’s friends revealed that she was very uncomfortable in the presence of Epstein. After reports of Epstein’s involvement in molesting underage girls came out, Melinda was apparently mortified. A person who attended the same event stated that he isn’t surprised learning that Melinda was completely turned off by the man. “The people around him… had a varying spectrum of what they knew and what they didn’t know and how they rationalized it… A lot of people were uncomfortable with Epstein, completely independent of his [sexual
misconduct]. He just was an obnoxious guy. He almost made a point of having bad manners, not paying attention at dinner… I could see how anybody, even without suspicions, would not want to be around him,” he told The Daily Beast. A New York Times article from 2019 reported that Bill Gates had met with Jeffrey Epstein several times between 2011 and 2013 despite the latter’s history of sexual misconduct. Back in 2005, officials from Florida had investigated Epstein following a complaint from a parent that her 14-yearold daughter was sexually abused by the man. In 2008, the court convicted him for soliciting a prostitute and procuring a child for prostitution. Gates eventually stated that

he shouldn’t have associated with Epstein in any manner. “I made a mistake in judgment that I thought that those discussions would lead, literally, to billions of dollars to global health… And I gave him some benefit by the association. So I made a doubly wrong mistake there,” Gates said in a statement in 2019.
The Clinton connection
Another powerful person associated with Epstein is former U.S. President Bill Clinton who also has a history of sexual misconduct. In 1998, Clinton was impeached for obstruction of justice and perjury because of his actions that involved a casual sexual relationship with an intern at the White House. Some reports have suggested that Clinton has been seen on Epstein’s private island where the latter is said to have housed several trafficked girls. Last month, The Sun published images showing Bill Clinton welcoming Jef-
frey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is accused of procuring underage girls for the convicted pedophile to the White House. The two visitors apparently toured the presidential residence while attending a reception. The images were taken back in 1993, indicating that Clinton might be a long-time associate of Epstein. In 2014, Clinton had a private dinner with Maxwell, several years after Epstein was convicted of child molestation. In March, Vice President Kamala Harris participated in a women’s empowerment event with Bill Clinton, an action that drew immense ridicule from some quarters. “This is obscene @KamalaHarris. You speaking with Bill Clinton about empowering women & girls is disgusting. Have you no soul? Have you no ethics? Ask him about being on an island of human trafficking victims 27 times. You are showing us exactly who you are,” Actress Rose McGowan said in a tweet. subscription@visiontimes.com

A Research Finds More Than Half of School Apps Sending Personal Student Data
to Third Parties utive director of Me2B Alliance, said in a statement. The study found that around 18 percent of the apps had links to very high risk third parties, meaning that such parties probably re-shared the data with hundreds of thousands of entities. 67 percent of public school apps were found to be sending data to third parties, which is 10 percent higher than private school apps. Each app had, on average, 10 third-party data channels. Android apps were more likely to share children’s private data as compared to iOS apps. In addition, Android apps are more likely to be sending that data to third parties that are classified as high or very high risk.

ccording to a new research report published by the nonprofit entity Me2B Alliance, around 60 percent of school apps are sending student data to a wide range of high-risk third parties without getting the permission of either the students or their parents. The study audited 73 apps from 38 different schools spread over 14 American states. It involved almost half a million people, including students, their teachers, and family members. The organization warned that school apps must not include thirdparty data channels and that an “unacceptable amount” of school data was being shared with third parties through these apps, specifically with analytics and advertising platforms. “The findings from our research show the pervasiveness of data sharing with high-risk entities and the amount of people whose data could be compromised due to schools’ lack of resources… The study aims to bring these concerns to light to ensure the right funding support and protections are in place to safeguard our most vulnerable citizens – our children,” Lisa LeVasseur, exec-
TikTok is a hugely popular social media platform that has helped children keep in touch with their friends during an incredibly difficult year. However, behind the fun songs, dance challenges and lip-sync trends lies something far more sinister… The firm is a data collection service that is thinly veiled as a social network which has deliberately and successfully deceived parents
SDKs and ad software
The apps analyzed in the study used 56 unique software development kits (SDK), most of which belonged to tech firms like Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Apple, Square, and Adobe. Around 48.6 percent of all SDKs in the apps were owned by Google, with Facebook following in the second place with 14.4 percent. 100 percent of all Android apps that included SDKs were found to be sending data to Google. “The Apple and Google app stores must update (or create,
Longfield said to BBC.
in the case of Google) privacy labels to include a list of all the SDKs that are installed in every app, including the name of the SDK owner/parent company. That way parents and students can make informed decisions about where they want to send their data… Google must revisit its Family Ads Program to ensure adequate protections and practices are in place. Additionally, it must perform independent validation of the self-provided assessments,” the report said in its recommendation. The report comes as several companies, including Viacom and Disney, recently agreed to remove certain ad software from their apps targeted at children. These companies, which also included 10 advertising firms, were accused of violating the privacy of millions of children worldwide and faced three class-action suits in this regard. According to the lawsuits, the accused companies installed tracking software in children’s gaming apps without parental consent. The software enabled tracking children over multiple devices and apps, encouraging them to make in-app purchases. Though the companies arrived at a settlement, they refused to admit having done anything wrong.

small town Alaskan couple is concerned about the future of the United States after the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided their home in search of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s stolen laptop, but came up empty in what the couple says is a case of obviously mistaken identity. On April 28, the FBI raided the home of Paul and Marilyn Huepers in Homer, Alaska, a town with a population of approximately 5,700 people, in search of the device, which was stolen during the Jan. 6 Capitol riots and has not been recovered. According to a May 6 NBC report, agents only told Marilyn Heupers “We’re looking for Nancy Pelosi’s laptop” after restraining her with handcuffs. NBC says the couple “first came to officials’ attention” when “Alaska Airlines in February banned the couple for refusing to wear masks on a flight.” In the warrant, which was obtained April 22 against the couple, who run an inn and spa in the Homer, the first 15 pages are devoted to narrating the general storyline of the Jan. 6 events in the same hyperbolic way Democrat House Managers conflated the actions of thugs to the actions of former President Donald Trump without evidence during his second impeachment trial. On Page 16, under the section “Facts Specific to this Application,” the Huepers are mentioned for the first time. However, the opening paragraph has nothing to do with either the riots or Pelosi’s laptop. Instead, it states on February 17 the couple were identified as “non-compliant” passengers because they “refused to follow mask regulations” and “were banned from flying with Alaska Airlines.” In the Warrant, the FBI said they were contacted by “Witness 1,” who notified them of the Alaska Airlines ban. The informant provided agents with an Instagram photo of Heupers, which was claimed

in the Warrant by the agent responsible, whose name is redacted from the unsealed document, to be “matching the exact description” of the woman wanted for the theft The FBI’s raid resulted in iPads, cellphones, and a personal laptop being seized by the FBI. Heupers noted FBI agents also took a personal sized copy of the Declaration of Independence the couple kept.
Confidence in democracy shaken
In a post on Facebook the same day as the raid, Heupers posted a side-by-side photo of her on Jan. 6 against the file photo released by the FBI on the unidentified suspect. Heupers bears a similarity to the woman in that she is wearing a similar black down jacket, has a similar hairstyle, is of a similar age, and is also a white female. However, Heupers is wearing a different sweater, no earrings, no eye shadow, and her hair is parted on a different side. Marilyn said in reference to the seizure of their copy of the Declaration of Independence that it felt like the FBI was “trying to say something or trying to intimidate.” “This is where the USSR got formed and where Venezuela got formed and Cuba, and on and on down the line…So Americans don’t really realize where this ‘police state tactic’ kind of government is leading us, and I don’t care if you’re Democrat, Republican, if you’re independent, if you’re Libertarian—wake up Americans, your rights are getting taken away and they are slipping away fast.” said Heupers.

ccording to Wall Street behemoth JPMorgan, the fairytale spun by pundits about Reddit’s WallStreetBets organizing to “squeeze” badly positioned hedge fund short sellers of video game retailer Gamestop (NYSE: GME) in what has been affectionately dubbed the “Gamestop Rebellion” is simply false. Peng Cheng, the JPMorgan quantitative and derivatives strategy analyst, wrote to clients in a note: “Although retail buying was portrayed as the main driver of the extreme price rally experienced by some stocks, the actual picture may be much more nuanced,” according to CNBC.

500 Scientists
Under Investigation
After Spending ‘50%-60% of their time’ in China By Prakash Gogoi Vision Times
A
Director for the National institute of Health (NIH) says officials are investigating more than 500 “scientists of concern” working on federally funded research institutes and at academia who have troubling connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). NIH Deputy Director for Extramural Research, Dr. Michael Lauer, made the revelations on April 29 in testimony before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, which focused on the issue of protecting American biomedical research from foreign actors. Lauer’s statements come as the nation is grappling with Chinese espionage that seeks to steal American research and technology for the benefit of the
Fleming also stated that if the UK wishes to remain a global cyber power, it needs to build capabilities in fields like quantum technologies, including cryptography, in order to protect sensitive information.
CCP. He revealed several scientists had lied to their respective American institutions and the NIH in declarations stating they spend 100 percent of their time in the United States. Lauer’s team found that in reality, almost 50 to 60 percent of their time was spent in China. “I think one big problem, Senators, is that the threat is significant…We have identified over 500 scientists of concern…Each of these require a tremendous amount of work to figure out what exactly has been happening and to work carefully with the institution to figure out what’s going on…As of April 2021, we have contacted more than 90 awardee institutions regarding concerns involving over 200 scientists,” Lauer said at the hearing. He added that more than 100 scientists have been removed from the NIH ecosystem. He also cites three major areas of con-
cern where foreign governments might seek to unduly influence U.S.-supported researchers and exploit collaborative biomedical research. • Some researchers at institutions funded by the NIH have not disclosed contributions received from other organizations, such as businesses and foreign governments; • Proprietary information produced by NIH-supported biomedical research or in grant applications is being diverted to other nations and entities; and • Some peer reviewers have failed to maintain confidentiality of grant application information, including “disclosure to foreign entities or other attempts to influence funding decisions.” The hearing was also attended by Lisa Aguirre, Acting Director of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of National Security. Aguirre tes-
tified that foreign actors were seeking to steal and co-opt U.S. research to promote their own national interests. Such actors include foreign researchers, foreign students, hackers, and so on. The Director stated that her office had conducted a foreign visitor vetting program, which vetted 13,138 foreign national visitors who were authorized to access government data and systems last year. Recently, Qin Shuren, a Chinese businessman pleaded guilty in a Boston federal court for illegally exporting hydrophones to China through his company that sells oceanographic instruments. In total, $100,000 worth of goods were transported to the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU), a Chinese military-backed university that closely works with the PLA to boost military capabilities. The hydrophones intended use was for anti-submarine warfare.
US Business Preparing for Mass Exodus out of Hong Kong By Simone Jonker Vision Times

merican companies are gearing up for a mass exodus out of Hong Kong after the Chinese Communist Party took full control over the formerly democratic city last year, shows a recent survey conducted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. The study revealed that more than 40 percent of the 325 members surveyed between May 5 and May 9 say they intend to leave the city, with 62 percent of respondents expounding their decision is based on rising concerns over the communist China-imposed National Security Law. One respondent wrote in comments published in the survey, “Previously, I never had a worry about what I said 212-730-6962
or wrote when I was in Hong Kong,” while another mentioned an “increase in antiforeigner sentiment in the media and government statements” as reasons for wanting to leave. Another Chamber member surveyed stated their reason as “the rise of illiberal values as Hong Kong becomes more closely integrated into China.” A propaganda spokesperson for the Beijing-backed Hong Kong government tried to feign the NSL was required to restore stability after Hong Kong’s 2019 massive anti-CCP protests and claimed the implementation of communism in the city would actually increase investor confidence in comments to Bloomberg. By contrast, another surveyed member said the NSL “is destroying Hong Kong’s international appeal.”
An airline stewardess heads towards a departure gate at Chek Lap Kok Airport March 7, 2003 in Hong Kong. According to the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, U.S. businesses are executing exit strategies amid fears of the installation of total communism in the once-democratic City. (Image: Christian Keenan/Getty Images)
Besides the installation of Beijing’s security law, other reasons for the possibility of an en masse exit cited by respondents are Hong Kong’s handling of the pandemic and the rising cost of living. 36 percent also cited major concerns over the quality of
Hong Kong’s education system due to influences the NSL will have on learning, while 49 percent of survey takers said Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s quarantine policies had made travel difficult, forcing them to consider leaving.
VISION TIMES
According to Bloomberg, Taipei, and Thailand, including Tokyo, were listed as probable destinations for fleeing businesses, with Singapore cited as the most popular city of choice.
In terms of timeframe, many members said they weren’t yet ready to rush to the exit. 3 percent said they planned to leave immediately, 10 percent said they would leave by the end of summer, 15 percent before 2022, and 48 percent said
they planned to go within three to five years. Chamber President Tara Joseph told AFP, “While people share their love for living in this dynamic city, they also reveal growing underlying tensions and nagging fears.” The Chamber conducted a similar survey last August, revealing that 39 percent of the 154 firms surveyed had plans to transfer capital, assets, or operations out of Hong Kong due to fears over the NSL. According to Bloomberg, Taipei, and Thailand, including Tokyo, were listed as probable destinations for fleeing businesses, with Singapore cited as the most popular city of choice. But packing up is neither easy nor cheap, and few major American multinationals have shown signs of uprooting their businesses on a large scale. subscription@visiontimes.com

China’s New Law
Against Food Waste

It's speculated that the food waste regulation and the ‘clean your plate’ campaign, that encouraged China’s citizens to be mindful of over-
has diminished, the country’s appetite taste for meat on has grown. In the 1960s the average amount of meat consumed by an individual in China annually was just 5 kilograms. The amount increased to 20 kg by the 1980s and has risen to today’s level of 63 kg consumed per

person annually. This proves to be a challenge as the amount of land needed to raise and feed animals for the meat industry takes up valuable land that could directly grow food for human consumption. With a growing demand for meat and a limited amount of arable land, China finds itself in a tricky position where imports of food is necessary for sustaining its population.
as the ‘factory of the world’ exports vast amounts of goods around the globe but it has a hard time supplying its people with adequate amounts of food thus imports from countries such as Brazil, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are important. Together, the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand accounted for 34.61 billion in imported food into China. On the other hand China exported 6.14 billion in food

food waste regulation, first proposed by China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) in December, was passed into law at the end of April. The new law will fine food caterers for excessive food wastage and allow restaurants to levy penalties upon patrons, who leave excess food unconsumed at the table. The law comes after Chinese leader Xi Jinping hinted at food shortages and related crises, and points to a worsening national economy. Fines dealt under the new law will be 10,000 yuan ($1,546) and up to a maximum of 50,000 yuan for food service operators. The ban on mukbang videos is also part of the new regulation. These videos are popular in Asia and feature people eating large quantities of food for their viewers entertainment.
eating and wasting food, has been a result of food shortages caused by the pandemic and other natural disasters. In 2019 the country experienced the spread of African swine fever among its pig farms that devastated the pig population and caused pork prices to rise 135 percent in 2020. The swine fever epidemic was followed by the global COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted supply chains around the world and caused orders to be unfulfilled as crops sat in fields to rot. Last year also brought major floods and locust infestations to China that devastated the agricultural industry. Although natural disasters had immediate ramifications on farming, the reduction of arable land due to pollution has been an ongoing issue as industries such as mining and manufacturing have left soil contaminated. In 2014, Reuters reported that almost 20 percent of farmland was contaminated from mining and manufacturing with little incentive to clean up the land. Compounding the diminishing amount of land available for crop production
An Australian vineyard. The Australian wine industry has been hit hard by China’s tariffs on imported wine.
Imports of food into China
As of 2017 CSIS reported the amount of food imported into China was 105 billion while its exports totaled to 59.6 billion revealing the reliance the country has on other nations to feed its large population. The country known
to the US and the amount exported to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand were negligible in comparison. The US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are four out of the ‘five eyes’ nations that are English speaking democratic countries that share intelligence. Born out of the
Trade weaponization can cause significant economic harm to countries that have a trade imbalance with a partner as large as China. Australia has experienced the financial damage caused by tensions between the two countries as tariffs and bans have reduced the amount of coal and wine exported to China. As trade weaponization becomes a growing concern among countries with strained relations with China, the limiting of consumption of food among its citizens could be a signal of not just a scarcity in its own supply due to natural disasters. The restrictions of food overconsumption and waste could signal a move to try to rely less on countries that China needs for food imports. Imports of food can hinder their strategy of economic damage that the country would wish to impose on nations it relies on heavily for agricultural products.

Attacks on Independent Media in Hong Kong

ong Kong has long been a safe haven for practitioners of Falun Gong, the spiritual practice that has endured more than 20 years of allout persecution by the communist regime in mainland China. While in any ordinary part of China, performing the discipline’s five meditation exercises or reading the teachings of its founder, Li Hongzhi, can get you a grueling sentence in a labor camp or deadly abuse in a brainwashing center, Falun Gong adherents freely passing out information about the horrors visited upon their faith are a common sight on the streets of the former British colony. The Epoch Times, a newspaper founded by Falun Gong practitioners, operates in Hong Kong, running a consistent narrative of criticism against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). And curiously, though nearly a year has passed since the imposition of a draconian National Security Law by the Chinese authorities that effectively banned all political dissent in Hong Kong, Falun Gong’s local presence — and its adherents’ messaging — has continued without much official action. It’s a marked contrast to the treatment visited upon leaders of the city’s pro-democracy movement, which in 2019 saw millions of Hongkongers come out on the streets to oppose the CCP’s growing control over Hong Kong. Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow, and other icons of the struggle to preserve the city’s autonomy and freedom have been arrested and sentenced. Meanwhile, another antiBeijing, pro-democracy outlet, Apple Daily, has had its offices raided by police and its founder, Jimmy Lai, put behind bars.

Masked attacks While not being targeted under the National Security Law, Falun Gong has also felt the heat. In a series of incidents over the last few months, thugs have targeted Hong Kong practitioners, The Epoch Times, and its staff. In late April, Ta Kung Pao, a local paper notorious for its pro-CCP slant, openly questioned why Falun Gong was allowed in the city, and recommended the practice be banned. On April 12, four masked men broke into The Epoch Times’ printing press in Tsuen Wan, smashing machines and computers with sledgehammers for two minutes before fleeing the scene. Before that, Falun Gong practitioners manning information booths were harassed and had their setup vandalized; so far, Hong Kong police have apprehended eight suspects. On May 11, Sarah Liang, a reporter for the Hong Kong edition of The Epoch Times, was attacked by a heavyset man wielding an aluminum softball bat. The assault occurred after a period of time in which Liang had noticed suspicious individuals and vehicles following her, including an incident on April 26 in which a middle-aged man stalked her before fleeing once confronted. The U.S. State Department condemned both the assault of Liang and the break-in at the Tsuen Wan printing press.
Falun Gong adherents freely passing out information about the horrors visited upon their faith are a common sight on the streets of the former British colony.
Falun Gong is a traditional qigong practice that spread throughout China in the 1990s, with government estimates putting the number of adherents at 70 million to 100 million people by 1998. The next year, Falun Gong was banned by then-CCP leader Jiang Zemin, on the grounds that its growth threatened to making a “laughingstock” of the Party and its atheist ideology, Millions of Falun Gong practitioners have been imprisoned, with torture, slave labor, and other forms of abuse being commonplace. A large but yet impossible-to-determine number of adherents are believed to have been murdered in Chinese hospitals for their organs in a scheme devised by Jiang’s closest lieutenants. For years, Falun Gong practitioners and The Epoch Times enjoyed relative openness because of Hong Kong’s special status under the “one country, two systems” arrangement, whereby the city retained its British-style rule of law and a wide range of political freedoms even after its return to China in 1997. However, despite the overall worsening of freedoms in the city since the 2019 protests, incidents like those against Sarah Liang and Falun Gong practitioners in

Hong Kong have been an on-and-off occurrence ever since the persecution began in mainland China. The first major challenge surfaced in 2003, when the CCP pushed to activate Article 23 of Hong Kong’s Basic Law. The article, which would have enforced “national security” legislation similar to that of the law eventually passed in 2020, was seen as being directed at the Falun Gong practitioners in the city. However, Beijing gave up trying to enforce Article 23 when 500,000 protesters rallied against it. In 2012, shortly following the rise to power of current Chinese leader Xi Jinping, a group called the Hong Kong Youth Care Association, or HKYCA, was founded. HKYCA members harassed and intimidated Falun Gong practitioners in the city, being the prime suspect in an incident involving the beating of a Falun Gong supporter as early as 2013.
Two struggles for Hong Kong
A
nalysis of both recent events in Hong Kong and broader political developments in the Communist Party help explain the perplexing treatment of Falun Gong following implementation of the National Security Law. Under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, Hong Kong was to retain its unique system for 50 years, until 2047. Many observers around the world and in the city assumed that by then, mainland China would have become a democracy, or sufficiently reformed so as to make deeper integration with the mainland palpable to the city’s residents.
212-730-6962
Instead, the CCP quickly began to interfere with Hong Kong’s governance and society, quickly establishing a stranglehold on the selection of top officials, including the city’s Chief Executive. Discontent and fear over the Party’s encroachment on their city led to a strong vein of political and social resistance to mainland China among Hongkongers, which has boiled over in various protests, notably the 2014 Umbrella Movement and the 2019 democracy movement. But apart from the CCP’s desire to assimilate Hong Kong to its dictatorship, fierce factional struggle in the Party’s
upper ranks has also had a major role to play in the city’s fate. Despite stepping down from his posts in the early 2000s, former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin and his allies retained dominance over the CCP regime throughout the first decade of the 21st century, largely sidestepping Jiang’s successor Hu Jintao via the system of “collective leadership.” But in 2012, the selection of Xi Jinping as CCP general secretary presented a unique challenge to the Jiang faction. To consolidate power, Xi targeted Jiang’s network of influence, bringing down hundreds of high-ranking officials with ties to the for-
mer leader in a sweeping anti-corruption campaign that is still on the books. However, the Jiang faction remains deeply entrenched in the regime, having developed extensive connections in the Party, state, military, and business sectors. Jiang’s righthand man, former Chinese vice president Zeng Qinghong, retains strong inf luence over the CCP intelligence community. According to insiders, the Hong Kong Youth Care Association was a Jiang faction project designed to encourage hatred of Falun Gong in the city, and was directly associated with Zeng. Other Jiang faction officials held or hold key posts in the CCP

With Sanctions Over Persecution of Falun Gong
he U.S. State Department saddled a midlevel Chinese Communist Party (CCP) member in charge of persecuting spiritual groups with sanctions on May 12, barring the official and his family from entering the United States. The announcement is noteworthy because the Party member is being openly punished by the Biden administration for his involvement in the notorious persecution of Falun Gong. In a press statement released by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Yu Hui, former Office Director of a CCP organ tasked with persecuting Falun Gong, the “Central Leading Group on Preventing and Dealing with Heretical Religions” in Chengdu, Sichuan Province was specifically targeted “for his involvement in gross violations of human rights, namely the arbitrary detention of Falun Gong practitioners for their spiritual beliefs.” The persecution of Falun Gong is a substantially more sensitive topic for the CCP than either Taiwan independence or Hong Kong democracy, and can be considered the regime’s Achilles’ heel.

and Chinese government organs overseeing Hong Kong, complicating Xi’s grasp in the area. Researchers at SinoInsider, a political risk consultancy specializing in Chinese regime politics, observe that Hong Kong is a key flashpoint for factional intrigue between the Xi leadership and the Jiang camp. The persecution of Falun Gong, being the product of the Jiang Zemin era, is a political legacy that Jiang and his associates have the greatest interest in perpetuating. Meanwhile, the anti-corruption campaign and power consolidations under Xi have directly targeted the Jiang faction, with it being almost

Falun Gong, otherwise known as Falun Dafa, is a traditional qigong meditation practice based on the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance, which places a unique focus on introspection and improvement of character during daily living and social interaction. The practice, first taught on May 13, 1992 by founder Li Hongzhi, garnered enormous popularity during the tail end of a qigong and meditation craze that was unique to China. The teaching’s principle values and its covenant that it always be free to learn brought 100 million members of the world’s largest population to count themselves among Falun Gong’s ranks by 1999, according to Chinese government surveys. However, at-the-time General Secretary of the CCP, Jiang Zemin, regarded Falun Gong’s popularity as a threat to his personal legacy and power, leading the Party boss to break ranks from fellow Politburo Standing Committee members who were otherwise unanimous in opposition to launching the campaign. On July 20, 1999 Jiang used his power within the Party to mobilize China’s entire public security and propaganda apparatus to launch a

Meanwhile, the “610 Office” — jargon for an extralegal security organization specifically set up to handle the repression of Falun Gong, was technically disbanded in early 2019. By late 2020, the HKYCA, which at one point shared a headquarters with a municipal 610 Office across the border from Hong Kong, had also disbanded. However, individuals and organizations

Analysts believe Jiang has lurked in the shadows as a “Party Elder” since stepping down in 2003, controlling and manipulating those in the CCP loyal and betrothed to him in order to keep the persecution going and prevent his own arrest. Neither of Jiang’s successors, Hu Jintao or Xi Jinping, have been in favor of escalating or continuing the persecution.

Sanctions against Communist Party officials specifically for the persecution of Falun Gong by the U.S. State Department has only happened one other time in the almost-22-years of the oppression. The previous was on Dec. 10, 2020 by the outgoing Trump administration when then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo placed sanctions on police official Reenactment of one of the torture methods employed by the CCP officials to coerce Falun Gong practitioners to renounce their faith.

The subject of the campaign against Falun Gong is, however, considered the foremost off limits area for any individual, corporation, or government who seeks to either conduct business in mainland China or have warm relations with the CCP because the persecution, involving live organ harvesting of practitioners for sale on the international black market, has

associated with the 610 Office and HKYCA have reportedly continued to operate. SinoInsider notes that Xi Jinping imposed the National Security Law on Hong Kong not only to crush the local democracy movement, but also to target the Jiang faction and stem its attempts to use the city as an “anti-Xi base.” The think tank wrote in a recent newsletter that given the existence of the National Security Law, the underhanded approach to attacking Falun Gong was nonsensical, at least if one were to assume that Party Central — led by Xi — was behind the effort to extend the persecution to Hong Kong.
Pressure mounts in Hong Kong
The new round of sanctions come on the back of a vicious baseball bat attack against the President of the Hong Kong Falun Dafa Association and Epoch Times reporter Sarah Liang on May 11. Liang was ambushed outside her apartment by a man wielding a baseball bat, who struck her in the legs several times, leading to hospitalization for severe swelling and bruising. Between April 20 and April 29, Ta Kung Pao, a propaganda newspaper which answers to Party officials in the mainland and distributes in Hong Kong published a series of articles both slandering Falun Gong and calling for it to be suppressed in the formerly-democratic city in the same way that it was in 1999 under Jiang. During the period Ta Kung Pao published its attacks, Liang was twice publicly harassed by men suspected to be affiliated with Beijing, and once more on May 8 when an attempted assault was thwarted because the assailant dropped his weapon. On May 11, a spokesperson for the State Department told the New York branch of The Epoch Times that the U.S. fully condemned the assault on its journalist, adding “attacks against journalists are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. We urge the authorities to complete a full investigation of this incident as well as the recent attack on the Epoch Times’ Hong Kong printing facilities.”
“The leadership could simply use the National Security Law to arrest Liang or any other Epoch Times reporter in Hong Kong, and shut down the newspaper at a moment’s notice given the media outlet’s anti-CCP stance.” Rather, the attacks against Falun Gong and The Epoch Times appear to be carried out by underworld elements or intelligence assets linked to the Jiang faction. The Xi leadership, having no special interest in Falun Gong, has avoided escalating the persecution against it, and could even see the practice as a political “card” that might one day come into play against Jiang and his allies.

Beijing Bought
More Than £135 Billion of
British Energy, Education, Tech By Jacqueline Chung Vision Times

espite growing public tensions between the UK and China over issues such as human rights and Hong Kong, at least £135 billion worth of British businesses, schools, property, stocks, and vital infrastructure have been acquired by Chinese investors, many of which directly state-owned or linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), over the past few years, according to a new investigation by UK-based The Sunday Times.
Chinese President Xi Jinping views models of satellites with Rupert Pearce, CEO of Inmarsat (R) during a visit to Inmarsat on October 22, 2015 in London, England. Recent investigations by the UK press reveal a startling buyup of Britain’s technology, education, energy, and business by Chinese Communist Partyowned and linked entities. The founder and chairman of Hong Kong Watch, Benedict Rogers, echoed the concerns, describing the investigation as "incredibly alarming" on Twitter. "This is precisely why we urgently need decoupling, ending strategic dependency and to This is precisely why we urgently need decoupling, ending strategic dependency and to disentangle ourselves from the clutches of the Chinese Communist Party." "To allow this to continue is profoundly stupid and profoundly dangerous," Rogers added.
British education with a Chinese tint
The report revealed that 17 privatelyowned British public schools were also identified as being under Chinese investment or control. This supports previous reports that the same number of schools were linked to the Communist regime. An article by Daily Mail in February revealed Chinese firms bought three schools, including Abbots Bromley School near Lichfield, Staffordshire, which was forced to close its doors in 2019. One of the most high-profile buyers is Bright Scholar, which bought a number of schools and colleges in 2018 and 2019, including Bournemouth Collegiate School and St. Michael's School in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. Bright Scholar is owned by Yang Huiyan, who is reportedly worth £2 billion, making her Asia's richest woman. Her father, Yang Guoqiang, is a member of the Communist Party's highest-ranking advisory council. Two independent schools - Bedstone College in Shropshire and Ipswich High School - are now owned by a fund backed by Wanda Group, founded by Wang Jianlin, a former People's Liberation Army soldier. Wang’s net worth is estimated at roughly £10 billion. He is also a member of a senior Communist Party advisory council. Another company, Ray Education Group, bought Adcote School for Girls near Shrewsbury and Myddelton College in Denbigh in 2018. On its website, Ray Education plainly says it aims to use British schools to help expand to other countries as part of Beijing’s notorious Belt and Road Initiative to boost the Party’s globalization efforts. “In essence, this is nothing less than a Communist takeover of part of Britain’s private educa-
tion sector,” Brexit leader Nigel Farage told Daily Mail.
Conflicts of interest abound
British universities have also been increasingly scrutinized for dealings with the CCP around development of weapons technologies. The scandal prompted the MI6 intelligence agency to investigate "some of the country's most prestigious universities" for conflicts of interest and national security violations. An estimated 200 British academics are also allegedly being investigated for “unwittingly helping the Chinese government build weapons of mass destruction,” according to Aljazeera. Research from Civitas, a civil society think-tank based in London, found that 15 British universities had dealings with 22 Chinese military-linked universities, other military-linked companies, and weapons suppliers. George Magnus, an associate researcher at Oxford University's China Centre, linked the increase in the CCP’s investment in Britain to so-called "Golden Era" policies trail blazed by former Tory Prime Minister David Cameron and his Chancellor of the Exquecher, George Osbourne. Magnus told Breitbart “I think it makes them [Cameron et al.] look chronically naive.” He added, “I think they genuinely believed that this was the way to go and I think they did it because they completely misunderstood the nature of Xi Jinping’s China.” In April it was revealed by UK-based investigative journalists the Observer and Bureau of Investigative Journalism that Cameron had reportedly used his connections to secure government approval for a $1 billion (£718 million approx.) UK-China fund. Cameron later became Vice Chairman.

Companies or investors from communist-ruled China have infiltrated the ownership of key areas of Britain's infrastructure and education. Reporting by Breitbart shows the Communist Party has even been stealing weapons technologies to support the aggression of the red regime, that a conflict of interest in the form of the UK-China fund advocated by former Prime Minister David Cameron has contributed in part to the current situation. According to The Times’ research, the scale of Chinese investment in the UK has increased significantly over the past several years, with roughly 40 percent of the 200 investments identified being made since 2019. Of the £135 billion in Chinese investment found in the report, at least £44 billion came from entities owned by the CCP. However, the paper notes it has taken a conservative approach to its estimations by valuing property based on price at acquisition rather than current market price, and that because “It has not been possible to
assess the value of dozens of investments and therefore the true value of Chinese ownership in the UK is likely to be far higher than the £135 billion found.” British assets bought by Chinese entities include shares in key infrastructure operators such as Thames Water, Heathrow Airport and UK Power Networks. The Chinese also acquired approximately £57 billion of shares in FTSE 100 companies and almost £10 billion worth of real estate across the country. One example is that of Chinese stateowned company China General Nuclear Power Group, who purchased a 33.5 percent stake in the Hinkley Point nuclear power plant in southwest England, the first new nuclear plant to be built in the UK in more than 20 years. In addition, China Investment Corporation (CIC), a sovereign wealth fund, has also bought a significant stake in both the British oil and gas companies and the renewable energy sector. On the high-tech front, British semiconductor design firm Imagination Technologies was acquired by Chinese government-funded private equity fund Canyon Bridge for £550 million in 2017. Meanwhile, steel giant Shagang Group is now the largest shareholder in Global Switch, a London-based data center operator. Chinese investors are also buying private schools and health care institutions in the UK, with at least 17 educational institutions in the UK now in the hands of Chinese investors. Previously, the American Enterprise Institute conducted an accounting estimate of Chinese investment in the UK, valuing the holdings at $99 billion USD (£71 billion approx). The Sunday Times’ report reveals a substantial increase in Chinese foreign investment. Former Conservative leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith told The Times, "This demonstrates that successive governments have been asleep on the watch. This evidence today shows how dangerously we are sailing towards Chinese control of key aspects of our business.” "China poses the single greatest strategic threat to the UK and the free world and we must make sure that we understand exactly how they set about essentially controlling key areas of economies, not only in the UK but also abroad. The Miraculous
Healing Effects of Good Music By Lucy Crawford
D
uring World War II, the U.S. Army field hospitals were filled with wounded soldiers. In hot weather, with hordes of mosquitoes and a severe shortage of medicine, the rate of surgical infection and mortality was very high, and morale was low among the wounded. Under these circumstances, a doctor played everyone’s favorite music. After the sick and injured heard the music, infection and mortality rates dropped dramatically, and the surgical healing period was shortened significantly. The ancient Chinese have long put stock in the ability of music to heal. The character meaning “medicine” is yao (藥), which derives from yue (樂), meaning “music.” Zhu Zhenheng, a famous doctor of the Yuan Dynasty, once said that “music is also medicine.” Chinese historical documents show records of treating diseases through music that go back much further. For example, Master Lü’s Spring and Autumn Annals – Music of the Ancients, written in 239 B.C., described the use of dance and music to regulate the disorders caused by tightness of the muscles and bones linked with depressive energy. The Garden of Persuasions, written prior to 700 B.C., contains records of a Hmong shaman, from an aboriginal tribe 5,000 years ago, who played a bamboo flute to heal his patients. A famous poet of the Tang Dynasty, Bai Juyi (772–846), wrote a poem about healing ailments with music: “A sound comes to the ears, and everything leaves the heart.”
Music’s remedial effect The ancient Chinese believe: To cure a disease, one must seek the root. The word “root” refers to yin and yang. According to Daoism, yin and yang are the laws of the universe, the origin of all things, and the fundamental driving force behind the growth and demise of everything in nature. In Master Lü’s Spring and Autumn Annals — Great Music, it was written: The origin of music is a faraway one. It is born from changes and is rooted in Dao. The Dao gives birth to heaven and earth, and heaven and earth produce yin and yang. … music is the product of the harmony of heaven and earth, and the tuning of yin and yang.” Ancient Chinese believed that music originates from the Way, or Dao, and comes from the dual interactions of yin and yang. It corresponds to the five elements of heaven, the five seasons of the earth (with the summer season divided into both summer and late summer), and the five organs of man. Music is the use of external patterned sound to reconcile the yin and yang in the human body, achieve balance, and conform to the natural state of divine unity. The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine – Su Wen says: “There are five tones in heaven and five organs in man.” The ancients developed a pen-
tatonic scale, associating the five tones of gong, shang, jue, zhi, and yu (宫商 角徵羽) — equivalent to do, re, mi, sol, and la of Western music — with the five main organs defined in traditional Chinese medicine: The liver corresponds to the tone jue (角), as music composed around this tone is described as being high and long. The heart is related to zhi ( 徵), a tone that taps into passion. The tone gong (宫) matches the spleen, as it is smooth and soft, and the lungs are related to shang (商), for it is sharp and crisp. Finally, the kidneys correspond to yu (羽), which is compelling and clear. The tones interact with each other to regulate the vitality of the five main of organs of the human body. The tones interact with each other to regulate the vitality of the five main organs of the human body. This corresponds as well with the five elements: wood (liver), fire (heart), earth (spleen), metal (lungs), and water (kidneys), under which each of the secondary organs are also categorized. In the process of listening, one’s emotions and the rhythm and frequency of the tones, and the regular vibrations among the five organs can achieve the effect of regulating one’s spirit and clearing the meridians.
Righteous and elegant music cultivates the mind An ancient instrumental piece entitled “White Snow in Early Spring,” composed by Shi Kuang, a famous musician during the Spring and Autumn Period ( 771 to 476 BC), was said to be initially a tune for the fivestringed zither which the Heavenly Emperor ordered the fairies to play. After hearing it, Shi Kuang recorded it in simulation. According to the “Magical Secret Score,” “Early Spring” is in the key of gōng; “White Snow” is in the key of shāng. Music composed in the gōng tone is usually graceful and grand. By contrast, the theme of the shāng tone is soft yet vigorous, bringing out a lyrical and gentle temperament and a positive and determined temperament at the same time. The “Early Spring” takes on the meaning of spring and the breeze, expressing the selfless grace of the heavens to all things, while “White Snow” carries the meaning of winter with snow and bamboo, representing the virtuous bearing of the earth. Only people with virtue to match

heaven and earth can perform it. The now-lost Classic of Music, edited by Confucius, instructed readers in the use of music to regulate human morality, cultivate emotions, and harmonize the qi and blood. The ancient sages, for example, created rituals and music not to satisfy physical desires, but to cleanse the evil in people’s hearts and expel impure thoughts. Righteous music stimulates innate goodness and protection against worldly desires that cloud man’s true nature, bringing people back to the right path for human beings. Material possessions always bring new desires, yet external matters cannot satisfy the heart. Decadent music encourages indulgence in material pleasures. According to the “Annals of Music” in the Records of the Grand Historian, Duke Ling heard the tune of a zither being played in the middle of the night when he was visiting Duke Ping. He asked his musician to learn the song and play it for Duke Ping. Upon hearing the song, musician Shi Kuang, who was present at the court, pressed on the zither strings to stop the music and said, “This is the sound of a declining state, do not play it any further.” He explained that the song was composed by Shi Yan, who played decadent tunes to King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty. King Zhou later lost his throne and the composer was exiled and committed suicide by drowning. This song, Shi Kuang warned, would weaken the country in which it was played. Duke Ping insisted on listening and ordered Shi Kuang to play something even sadder. Shi Kuang urged him not to listen to such melancholy pieces. But Duke Ping still would hear the music. The first time Shi Kuang played it, a dark omen of 16 black swans appeared in front of the court; the second time he played it, all the black swans stretched their necks, cried out and flapped their wings. The Duke found it very interesting and wanted to hear an even more foreboding tune. Shi Kuang tried again to persuade him not to listen to this kind of music, but the Duke thought that since he was getting old, he should be able to listen to whatever he liked. Shi Kuang had no choice but to play. While he was playing, white clouds surged up from the northwest sky, a gale blew, lifting the tiles off the rooftop, and rain fell. All the guests ran for their lives. The Duke was so frightened that he hid inside. After that, there was a severe drought in the kingdom of Jin, and no grass grew for three years. For individuals, righteous and elegant music can nurture morale, foster noble aspirations, cultivate the mind, and prolong life. On a broader scale, it helps to govern the nation, educate the people, and bring peace and prosperity to the state. On the other hand, chaotic music characterized by lustful and vulgar sound can cause people to fall into a state of disorder and indulge in carnal desires. It serves to harm the human body and corrupt the entire nation. Modern rock and roll is known for loud noise and chaotic sound, leading to personal indulgence and a life dominated by desires. As we can see, rock musicians often abuses drugs, live promiscuously, and die prematurely.

Madonna of the Pinks The Madonna of the Pinks is an early devotional painting usually attributed to Italian Renaissance master Raphael. It is painted in oils on fruitwood and now hangs in the National Gallery, London.
The Marriage of the Virgin Completed in 1504 for the Franciscan church of San Francesco, Città di Castello, the painting depicts a marriage ceremony between Mary and Joseph. It changed hands several times before settling in 1806 at the Pinacoteca di Brera.

uring the Italian Renaissance era, there were three famous artists: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. They were well-known for their works on Jesus Christ for which they created a great number of paintings. Raphael, however, was also known for his work the “Sistine Madonna” because of its distinctive style.

One of the Three Greats of Renaissance Art
Raphael, whose real name was Raffaello Santi, otherwise known as Raffaello Sanzio, was born into a family of second-generation artists. At a tender age, his father, who was a court painter to the Duke, first introduced him to the fundamentals and core teachings of painting. Due to his hard work and genius mindset, he was able to paint “Madonna and Child “ at the age of 15 showcasing his talent to the world. In a few years, Raphael's constant work and practice of perfecting his craft allowed him to reach a level of excellence. He practiced what he was taught by his teacher, and was able to create a replica of his teacher's work. By the age of 17, he was viewed and paid as a "master" when it came to his pieces of art.
In 1504, at the age of 21, Raphael created “The Marriage of the Virgin” which exceeded his teacher Pellegrino’s work in terms of composition, balance, and the depiction of the background. Especially with his painting of “The Virgin and Child”, it dignified an elegant demeanor, making it a true unique work of art. As time went on, Raphael decided to go to Florence as it was the center of Italian art, and also to study. With his artistic talent and hard work, he soon became an artist on the same level as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, which is why he was known as one of the "Three Greats of Renaissance Art".
Madonna of Foligno On the left are the kneeling St. Francis of Assisi and St. John the Baptist, who is standing and wearing a tunic of skins. As St. John points to Jesus, he clearly looks out to us, pulling us in, while St. Francis points to us and looks at the Christ Child. Between the men is an angel, linking the saints of earth to the Heavenly host. Behind them are the towers of Foligno.

Raphael's “Sistine Madonna” The “Sistine Madonna” is a classic work of Raphael's and is widely known for its heavenly undertones. It was kept in the Sistine Chapel until 1754, after which it was brought by King Augustus III to Germany where it gained popularity, and was put into the King's chamber next to his throne. The painting displayed the Virgin Madonna, Saints and cherubs, with the Virgin holding Jesus in her arms, with a serene but worried look on her face as she stood there. When Pope Sixtine II saw the painting for the first time, he kneeled on both knees out of reverence, as it represented the ruler of the world has come to save people from suffering. The "Sistine Madonna" is very different from his previous paintings of the Virgin. It shows that she understands the suffering of the world, or maybe she foresees, or feels, the suffering of Jesus for the sake of saving humankind. One can see a touch of sadness on her face and helplessness in her eyes, as she internalizes what is to come.
Ansidei Madonna The painting shows the Blessed Virgin Mary sitting on a wooden throne, with the child Christ on her lap. On her right John the Baptist stands, on her left Saint Nicholas is reading.
Carrying a Divine Mission In the Renaissance era, art was meant to be a glorification of God who created mankind. Many of the great artists in history, and their masterpieces, are mostly works that depict and praise God—Raphael was no exception. He created a large number of paintings related to Jesus. Amongst his paintings, the most famous is the Madonna series, including: "Ansidei Madonna", "Madonna del Prato", "Madonna of Foligno", "Madonna della seggiola", "Alba Madonna", "Sistine Madonna", etc. Among them, his masterpiece "Sistine Madonna" is even more famous. Raffaele in Italian means “God has healed”. As his name implies, Raphael created his work of art as if it was a heavenly mission to show the world’s people that there is another side to what we see in the world around us. During his short time on earth, he left many classical works for others to see the world the way he did. Raphael's artistic charisma not only cap-
tivated his contemporaries, but its influence continues to this day. His artistic beauty has become the benchmark for future generations of academic classicism and an unparalleled model for future generations.
Alb Madonna The painting depicts Madonna and Child playing with John the Baptist in the twilight. The Virgin Mary, with her pure blush, sat on the ground. It is rare that she did not hold Jesus tightly in her arms. Instead, she placed the baby on her lap. The three were in different poses. But all eyes suspiciously focused on the cross. The inspiration of the children is naturally framed in the classic triangular balance composition.
The Vivid and Graceful Painting Style
Raphael’s artistic style and aesthetic expression always validated the kind of person he was. Raphael's personality of being gentle and having an elegant style also came to life in his style of painting. This is why his Madonna painting was always viewed as harmonious and unparalleled.
TIMES
Though Raphael’s paintings mostly displayed a sense of heavenly peace, it was not that Raphael did not observe the misery and despair of mankind, but he decided to not focus on human suffering as his painting themes. Instead, he painted cheerful and bright paintings that positively presented the world. subscription@visiontimes.com

Three Basic Recipes for
Sustainable Kitchens
By Nadia Ghattas
T
he rewarding experience of cooking at home with family and friends can be seen as a silver lining in the era of COVID lockdowns and economic uncertainty. As the saying goes, “the table unites.” Sharing ideas and stories that bring everyone closer to one another is like the frosting on the cake. The cherry on top is that it saves time, money and resources. Coming together to share in the prep work for the simple food items that can help make putting together healthy and wholesome meals during the week a breeze. Once you have the base ingredients for such items as vegetable stock and heirloom beans, you can store in the fridge or freezer for when you need it for a whole variety of dishes. Once you groove with the habit you’ll realize how convenient and sustainable it can be. And another bonus! Almost nothing goes to waste. A good principle to keep in mind is that stocks, especially vegetable stock can be either sweet or savory. The ingredients are the clue as to which type of vegetable stock to use when cooking. Sweet vegetable stock goes well with pumpkin, hard squash, or any type of fruit. While savory vegetable stock goes very well with tangy, lemony or earthy flavors. Both stocks are easy to make and easy to store. Following are recipes from Chef Michel Nischan’s book Sustainably Delicious. Nischan is an advocate of sustainability of movement.
Dried Heirloom Beans Recipe Since legumes are high in protein, fiber, and minerals, while low in fat, they can help lower cholesterol and keep you feeling full longer. Many find heirloom beans to be tastier than the more common varieties.
Ingredients
• 2 Cups of dried beans such as christmas lima/ chestnut limas, Appaloosa, Indian Woman • 5 -6 FreshThyme sprigs • 2 Garlic Cloves • ½ Fresh bay leaf • Sea Salt to taste • Pinch of baking soda • 1-2 Bayleaf (either fresh or dry) • 1-2 Tablespoons of sweet butter
Savory Vegetable Stock – makes about 4 quarts Ingredients
• 1 Fennel bulb, trimmed and quartered • 3 Large leeks, trimmed and coarsely chopped • 3 Large onions, peeled and quartered
• 1 Rutabaga, peeled and coarsely chopped • 1 Pound mushroom stems or who mushrooms
Method
Step 1. Pre-roasting your vegetables will make any vegetable stock richer and more flavorful. It also cuts simmering time in half. Step 2. Combine the vegetables in a large stockpot. Add enough water to cover by an inch. Bring to a boil over high heat. Immediately reduce the heat. Step 3. Simmer gently for about 1 ½ hours or until the stock is nicely flavored. Step 4. Strain the stock. Let it cool to room temperature. Step 5. When cool, transfer to lidded containers and refrigerate for up to 1 week, or you can freeze it. You can also save the vegetables that are not grossly overcooked to use with other hash recipes.
Method
Step 1. Put the beans in a bowl and cover generously with cool water. Let the beans soak for at least 8 hours and up to 24 hours. The longer the better. Change the water several times during the soaking process, if you can. Step 2. Transfer the beans to a large saucepan and cover generously with water. Add the thyme, garlic, bay leaf, and baking soda. The baking soda helps soften the bean’s skin. (Do not add salt to the water; salt toughens the beans). Step 3. Bring the water to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to a low and simmer very gently, partially covered, for about 2 hours, or until the beans are nice and tender. (High heat will not speed up the process but it will break up the beans). Sprinkle enough salt into the water until the water tastes as salty as seawater. Step 4. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Let it stand for 10-20 minutes, or until the beans are perfectly salted. Step 5. At this point the beans can be drained, cooled and refrigerated for up to 5 days or used in recipes that all cooked dried heirloom beans. You can also freeze them for a longer period of time. To serve right away, drain the beans and serve hot, tossed with the butter and thyme.

Hard Squash and Heirloom Bean Soup With these 2 of the three-sister-plants of Native American agriculture, Chef Nischhahan celebrates the relationship between beans and hard squash. (In case you couldn’t guess number 3, it’s corn) The indigenous practice of growing these plants side by side that helps all to flourish represents one of the best examples of companion planting recognized for centuries in the Western Hemisphere.
