Pandemic Measures
Havoc Wreak Long Term
on Job Market
By Neil Campbell Vision Times
A
lthough the United States’ economy is showing a positive trend in the short term, the overall horizon remains hazy compared to pre-pandemic levels, according to May’s nonfarm payroll report. The May Employment Situation Summary, put out by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), showed that while unemployment did fall by 0.3 percent to 5.8 percent and the economy shed 496,000 unemployed workers, bringing the number down to 9.8 million, BLS points out that these numbers are still extraordinary compared with the economy before SARS-CoV-2. February of 2020 saw unemployment at a mere 3.5 percent, comprising only 5.7 million people by comparison. The economic distress is further reflected in the number of workers still temporarily laid off, a staggering 1.8 million people, up 1.1 million from February of 2020. The number of individuals with permanent job loss is worse: a crushing 3.2 million, a 1.9 million person

growth over the same time period. The report defines long-term unemployed as those who have been jobless for 27 weeks or more. This group comprises 3.8 million people and is still 2.6 million higher than it was before COVID-19. “Individuals, who would have preferred full-time employment, were working part time because their hours had been reduced or they were unable to find full-time jobs,” remained flat month-over-month, but is still up almost 880,000 people since the pandemic began. The BLS admitted there are still 7.9 million people in the country who are “unable to work because their employer closed or lost business due to the pandemic” and 2.5 million who were “prevented from looking for work due to the pandemic.” The gains seen in the U.S. labor market in May were due primarily to a decline in unemployment for teenagers, with stagnation for adult men, adult women, blacks, and hispanics. The biggest piece of the pie was the 292,000 jobs added to the leisure hospitality industry, including restaurants, bars, and casinos. The gains posted were thus of primary benefit to those working as bartenders and waitresses.
Individuals, who would have preferred full-time employment, were working part time because their hours had been reduced or they were unable to find full-time jobs, remained flat monthover-month, but is still up almost 880,000 people since the pandemic began.
Employment in the U.S. education system, however, is still down by almost 1.1 million jobs compared to the before-pandemic era.
Insider, a McDonald’s franchise owner in Florida was enticing prospective employees with $50 cash to simply appear for an interview.
The Federal Reserve’s June Beige Book report made the attempt to tie employment gains in the leisure and hospitality sectors to the mainstream media narrative painting vaccination rate as the sole solution to the pandemic.
In New York, Andrew Cuomo’s legislature passed a $200 billion budget, including a $15,600 cash payout to jobless illegal immigrants. The spending is to be paid for with higher corporate taxes and a tax hike on the wealthy.
The Fed also remarked that “It remained difficult for many firms to hire new workers, especially lowwage hourly workers, truck drivers, and skilled tradespeople. The lack of job candidates prevented some firms from increasing output and, less commonly, led some businesses to reduce their hours of operation.”
The Fiscal Policy Institute found New York unemployed workers could rake in between $34,000 and $50,000 annually by riding welfare. By comparison, the average annual pay for a retail worker in the state is $34,000 to $39,000, according to the BLS.
In May, Amazon launched a $3 an hour wage increase employment campaign in order to compete with federal welfare. The Biden administration, which has already spent over $6 trillion in socialist-style spending policies, has increased unemployment insurance to such a degree that it makes more financial sense for workers to stay at home and collect insurance than it does to build a career. According to the U.S. National Debt Clock website, the country’s debt exceeds $28 trillion, amounting to more than $225,000 per taxpayer. Yet an April report by Truth in Accounting found the real figure, including unfunded Medicare and Social Security spending, to be over $123 trillion, amounting to $796,000 per taxpayer. The Federal Reserve Economic Data center reports the U.S. Gross Domestic Product is only $22 trillion annually.

Senate Passes Bill
Investing Billions
in Next-Generation Tech to Counter China, Spur Innovation
By Todd Crawford Vision Times
T
he U.S. government is poised to pour close to $250 billion dollars of new investment into its tech sector as part of efforts to maintain its global lead in fields such as telecommunications, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and semiconductor manufacturing, and to address what many see as an erosion in competitiveness particularly in the face of Chinese competition. On May 18, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) rolled out the bipartisan U.S. Innovation and Competition Act of 2021, previously called The Endless Frontiers Act. On June 9, the act passed its final hurdle in the Senate and was brought into law with bipartisan support. The nearly 1500-page act addresses increasing competition from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and aims to boost government support for science and technology as well as to bolster the innovation environ-
ment in the U.S. The act addresses the notion that technology innovation within the U.S. is limited to a handful of hubs, like Silicon Valley, and seeks to develop other areas in the U.S. in order to grow a more distributed high-tech job market. Upstate New York is a key target for development. The initiative has been called a “once in generation investment” and attempts to address numerous technology gaps identified under both the Trump and Biden administrations. Speaking about the Act, Schumer stated, “In the midst of one of the most consequential battles in our nation’s history, the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act lays the foundation for the next century of American economic leadership and preserves our competitive edge for generations to come.” Some have compared the initiative to China’s “Made in China 2025” program which funnelled massive amounts of government spending into key technological fields and sought to eliminate China’s reliance on foreign entities
for technological innovation and development. Republican legislators have criticized the Act for removing language that supported Hong Kong, where Beijing has largely crushed the freedoms it promised, and Taiwan — the democratically ruled island officially known as the Republic of China — which is claimed by the communist PRC as part of its integral territory.
Semiconductors a main focus
Addressing the global semiconductor shortage is just one of the many priorities of the act. The globe has been experiencing a significant shortage in semiconductors attributed to the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. Manufacturers, from consumer electronics to automobiles, have been struggling to procure enough semiconductors to meet demand for their products leading in some cases to the shuttering of key production facilities. Included in the act is at least $52 billion in emergency supplemental appropriations to
implement semiconductorrelated manufacturing initiatives and R&D programs. Over $10 billion has been allocated to establish the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC). $2 billion has been allotted specifically for legacy chip production in an attempt to advance the economic and national security interests of the United States. $500 million has been earmarked, upfront, for a CHIPS for America International Technology Security and Innovation Fund. The fund aims to coordinate with foreign government partners to support international information and communications technology security and semiconductor supply chain activities.
Next generation tech
With the passing of the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act of 2021 fledgling technology initiatives in the United States have received a much needed boost. Under the Trump administration, then Secretary for Science Paul Dabbar, announced a Department of Energy (DOE) initiative; America’s Blueprint for the Quantum Internet. The act specifically asks for “a plan for the
advancement of quantum networking and communications technology in the United States,” an initiative that is well on its way to fruition. The act specifically targets “artificial intelligence, machine learning, autonomy, and related advances.” and strives to, “ recruit and train artificial intelligence professionals to lead and support the application of artificial intelligence to the missions of Federal, State, local, and Tribal governments.”

Biden Announces Executive Order Banning Investment in 59 Chinese Companies By Todd Crawford Vision Times
O
n June 3, President Joe Biden signed an executive order restricting the flow of American capital into 59 Chinese companies linked to military and surveillance activities. The order is a modified version of a policy adopted during the Trump administration. “This E.O. prevents U.S. investment from supporting the Chinese defense sector, while also expanding the U.S. Government’s ability to address the threat of Chinese surveillance technology firms that contribute — both inside and outside China — to the surveil212-730-6962
lance of religious or ethnic minorities or otherwise facilitate repression and serious human rights abuses,” the executive order states. Blacklisted companies include Huawei Technologies, Fujian Torch Electron Technology, Aero Engine Corp. of China, Hikvision, China Telecom, China Mobile, and Aviation Industry Corp. of China. The ban takes effect on Aug. 2. Previously, Trump’s executive order from November 2020 enacted prohibitions that took effect on Jan. 11, 2021. Americans were banned from investing in Chinese firms linked to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), and had until November 2021 to divest their hold-

ings of securities of blacklisted firms. There are two major differences between Trump’s and
Biden’s executive orders: Trump tasked the Pentagon with selecting the list of Chinese firms to be blacklisted.

Under Biden, this responsibility now belongs to the Treasury Department. Specifically, the Treasury secretary will select the companies after consulting with the Secretary of State, and the Defense secretary will only be consulted if required. Trump’s prohibitions broadly applied to all subsidiaries that were “determined to be controlled” or were “50 percent or more owned” by the sanctioned Chinese companies. In contrast, Biden excludes subsidiaries from the ban except when they are listed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). In addition, the prohibitions will not apply to Chinese companies whose
names closely match the blacklisted firms. In a statement, Chris Lacovella, CEO of American Securities Association (ASA), supported Biden’s order for “continuing the previous administration’s crackdown on Communist China’s infiltration” of America’s capital markets. “For far too long, the CCP has taken advantage of regulatory loopholes to fund its military rise, a cyber army that attacks us, ‘re-education camps’ used to perpetrate crimes against humanity on its own citizens, the use of slave labor in violation of international law, and its new position as the world’s leading polluter,” stated Lacovella. subscription@visiontimes.com

males and vice-versa under penalty of compensatory damages and huge penalties, including lawyers’ fees, if they did not comply. Julie Blake, a lawyer with Alliance Defending Freedom representing the College, argued that the Executive Order would impinge on Christians’ legal rights and tenants according to traditional Christian faith. She said in a statement, “The government cannot and should not force schools to open girls’ dorms to males based on its politically motivated and inappropriate redefinition of ‘sex’,” adding that “the religious liberty law firm is representing the school in its legal fight and women shouldn’t be forced to share private spaces — including showers and dorm rooms — with males, and religious schools shouldn’t be punished simply because of their beliefs about marriage and biological sex.” The College of the Ozarks contended that the new order would pressure academies to permit students of different sexes into dorms and personal areas. “For decades, the College has prohibited male students from living in female dormitories, and vice versa, regardless of whether those students

federal court rejected a Christian college’s request for an emergency injunction against an Executive Order issued under the Biden administration that would force entities under the Fair Housing Act to open bedrooms and bathrooms of student housing to members of the opposite sex so long as they self-identify. The Order was one of Biden’s slew of Inauguration Day signings, Protecting and Combating Discrimination based on Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation, in an attempt to reverse former President Donald Trump’s policy on LGBTQ issues. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUB) followed up with an order that granted alignment with the administration’s new definition of the word “sex.” The College of the Ozarks, a private liberal arts college in Missouri, sued the Biden administration on April 15, arguing the administration was pressurizing religious schools to act against their freedom of belief that gender is God-given at the time of birth and forcing them to open female bedrooms to

The College of the Ozarks lost a court battle for a restraining order against a Biden-administration Executive Order that will require colleges to open bathrooms and bedrooms to self-identifying members of the opposite sex.

Against Opening Dorms to Members of Opposite Sex identify with their biological sex. The College likewise separates intimate spaces such as showers and bathrooms in its dormitories,” the school’s lawsuit read. However, Administration officials state the new order is necessary, saying civil rights laws protect LGBTQ workers from discrimination in the workplace. The Biden administration’s argument boiled down to a Supreme Court ruling last year regarding Bostock v. Clayton County. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 says a staff member can not be terminated because of their sexual preferences since it would be a case of certain sexual Discrimination. Blake argued that the high court’s ruling, presided over by Justice Gorsuch, noted that the case concentrated only on the employment environment and did not apply to gender skirmishes over access to college dressing rooms. The court hearing lasted 2 hours. Judge Roseann Ketchmark, an Obama appointee, issued a ruling refusing the College of the Ozarks a short-term restraining order and an initial charge, which would offer transitory protection for the College while its lawsuit is pending.

uring an interview with radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt published June 2 on YouTube, Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institute for Health (NIH) and Dr. Anthony Fauci’s boss, admitted that the U.S. government had “no control” over how grant funds provided by the NIH were used by the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). The U.S. provided upwards of $600,000 in grants to the WIV via Peter Daszak’s EcoHealth Alliance, but how those funds were used and whether or not they were used for gain-of-function research remains unclear. Gain-of-function research can be described as aiming to increase a virus’ pathogenesis, transmissibility, or host range. During the interview, Collins said, “when we give a grant… it has terms attached to it of what it is that the grantee is supposed to be doing with those funds… And we trust the grantee to be honest and not deceptive.” “The grant funds that went to Wuhan, which were a subcontract from EcoHealth, were very specifically aimed to try to categorize viruses that they could isolate from bats in Chinese caves, we had a good reason to want to know more about, given SARS and MERS that had come out of there,” he continued. “We had no control over what else they were doing with those funds. That’s another thing we’d like to know more about, and an investigation might potentially tell us.” His statement brings into question claims made by Collins’ subordinate, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who said that the NIH did not collaborate with the WIV on gain-of-function research. According to Collins, Fauci and the NIH had no way of knowing for certain what the grant funds were being used for. Fauci told the U.S. Senate,
at a hearing this month, that the U.S. “has not ever, and does not now, fund gain-of-function research in the WIV.”
NIH’s evasive behavior
During the interview, Hewitt stated that a twopage NIH “non-response” to a detailed inquiry made by the office of Cathy McMorris Rodgers, U.S. Representative for Washington’s 5th congressional district, could be construed as “evasive.” He asked, “why would the NIH not go to the effort of being fully responsive because it does give off the appearance of evasion?” Collins responded, “much of the information they’re asking for, we don’t have the answers to. Some of it is pretty sensitive, not quite classified, but getting close to that. So it just didn’t seem like this was going to be wellserved by having a very, very detailed exchange of letters.” Hewitt pressed further, saying, “When NIH doesn’t respond to congressionally authorized committees that does raise questions of governance, we are a nation of laws and NIH, pretty sure, is the Federal government and the Congress oversees NIH.” According to a press statement issued in January 2021 by then Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, “the United States has repeatedly called for a transparent and thorough investigation into the origin of COVID-19. Understanding the origin of this pandemic is essential for global public health, economic recovery, and international security.” However, calls for a thorough investigation into the origins of COVID-19 have largely gone unanswered.

ccording to Wall Street behemoth JPMorgan, the fairytale spun by pundits about Reddit’s WallStreetBets organizing to “squeeze” badly positioned hedge fund short sellers of video game retailer Gamestop (NYSE: GME) in what has been affectionately dubbed the “Gamestop Rebellion” is simply false. Peng Cheng, the JPMorgan quantitative and derivatives strategy analyst, wrote to clients in a note: “Although retail buying was portrayed as the main driver of the extreme price rally experienced by some stocks, the actual picture may be much more nuanced,” according to CNBC.

Growing ‘Lying Flat’ Movement Threatens to Derail China’s Ambitions By Todd Crawford Vision Times

Chinese Authorities Deploy
Emotion Detection Technology in Xinjiang
By Jonathan Walker Vision Times
C
ommunist China has tested a camera system on Uyghurs that combines AI with facial recognition to identify the emotions of an individual, as reported by BBC. A software engineer who installed such systems in the Xinjiang region’s police stations revealed the information to the media outlet. The system was intended to make “pre-judgment without any credible evidence.” The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in far west China, home to the Uyghurs and other ethnicities, has been the subject of intense surveillance and mass incarceration under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in recent years. The engineer, whose identity BBC withheld, showed photographs of five detainees on whom the government had tested the AI emotion detection system which is said to indicate a person’s state of mind through various colors on a pie chart, with red indicating an ‘anxious’ or ‘negative’ state of mind. The AI is trained to detect even the smallest changes in a person’s facial expressions. Beijing uses Uyghurs as test subjects for various experiments “just like rats are used 212-730-6962
in laboratories,” the man told BBC.
‘Like a die detector’
The software engineer explained his role in installing the systems at police stations – “We placed the emotion detection camera 3m from the subject. It is similar to a lie detector but far more advanced technology… Your wrists are locked in place by metal restraints, and [the] same applies to your ankles.” When BBC questioned the Chinese embassy in London on the issue, the latter stated
that people live “in harmony” in Xinjiang and “enjoy a stable and peaceful life” without their personal freedoms constrained in any way. At a high-level virtual event at UN on May 12, Kenneth Roth, the Executive Director of Human Rights Watch (HRW), said that “more than one million Uyghur and other Turkic Muslims” have been detained by the communist regime who has forced them to renounce their religion and culture. “A highly intrusive surveillance state has been established in Xinjiang to deter-
mine whom to detain.,” he said while adding that there has been a “shocking reduction in Muslim birth rate in the region”. Compared to a slight increase in birth rates in Han Chinese areas, the Muslim birth rate has fallen by “a reported 48.74%.”
High tech persecution
“Uyghur life is now about generating data… Everyone knows that the smartphone is something you have to carry with you, and if you don’t carry it you can be detained, they know that you’re being

tracked by it. And they feel like there’s no escape,” he said. On Nov. 24, 2019, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) published classified documents that exposed the inner workings of the detention camps housing Uyghurs and other minority communities. The classified intelligence briefings revealed Beijing’s use of AI-powered policing platforms that claimed to “predict crimes” based solely on computer-generated findings. “The system is able to amass vast amounts of intimate personal data through warrantless manual searches, facial recognition cameras, and other means to identify candidates for detention, flagging for investigation hundreds of thousands merely for using certain popular mobile phone apps,” the ICIJ said. John Honovich, the founder of IPVM, a Pennsylvaniabased company that reviews and investigates video surveillance equipment, said that the issue was an example of how such discriminatory technology has become “totally normalized.” “This is not one isolated company. This is systematic… A lot of thought went into making sure this ‘Uighur alarm’ works,” Honovich said.
growing sentiment in mainland China known as “lying flat” is threatening Beijing’s political and economic ambitions, adding further tension to an already volatile socioeconomic situation. “Lying down” or “lying flat” is a form of passive resistance or protest by young Chinese people in the face of what is seen as fierce competition in education, gruelling work hours, and limited future prospects. The idea has inspired many young people to refuse a traditional life of continuing education, establishing a career, and having a family. Instead, their focus is on getting by on the bare minimum in life and enjoying what they have. The idea took root on the social media platform Baidu after a post titled “Tang Ping is Justice” by a user with the moniker, “Kind Traveler,” went viral. The post stated, “I haven’t worked for more than two years, and all I am doing is playing. I don’t feel there is anything wrong with that.” “I can be like Diogenes, who only sleeps in his barrel in the sun, or Heraclitus who lives in a cave and thinks about ‘Logic.’ Since this land has never really been holding up the tide of human wholeness, I can make it for myself. Lying flat is my wisdom movement. Only by lying flat, human beings are the measure of all things.” The post, which has since been deleted by authorities, describes a life where traditional life ambitions are set aside in favor of a simpler life devoid of trappings such as a busy career or a family. “Lying flat” flies in the face of Beijing’s directives as it struggles to address an aging workforce, a looming population crisis, and growing apathy among its populace.
Compounding crises
The popular movement is gaining traction at the worst possible time for the CCP. The recent census, conducted once a decade, revealed an aging population that could soon stifle economic growth and place a significant burden on the regime. At a time when Beijing is encouraging couples to have multiple children, many young people are preferring to instead “lie flat.” In desperation, the CCP recently announced a three-childpolicy, ending their twochild-policy that was enacted in 2016. Before that, a onechild-policy from 1979 was in place. While the gap between the rich and poor continues to grow, and more young people become disenchanted with their future prospects, “lying flat” may become the answer to a young person’s woes and a spreading cancer to the ruling communist party. subscription@visiontimes.com

Hong Kong
Deployed 3,000 Police to Block Tiananmen Memorials but People Have Their Ways By Jacqueline Chung Vision Times
H
ong Kong, once the only free city in China, has not stopped commemorating the Tiananmen Square Massacre in a peaceful manner for more than 30 years. After the government banned the annual candlelight vigil last year using the pandemic as a pretext, over 3,000 police officers have been deployed this year and advocates were arrested. However, that did not stop the people of Hong Kong from preserving the truth in their own way.
Memorial activities blocked by the government
Hong Kong’s Apple Daily reported that on June 4 this year, authorities mobilized thousands of police officers to set up roadblocks to check vehicles in the main roads and crossharbor tunnels. The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China (the “Alliance”) has been organizing candlelight vigils in Victoria Park for 30 consecutive years. In 2020, the Hong Kong government for the first time banned people from
entering the park to participate in the vigil on the grounds of the pandemic, but a large number of people ignored the ban and joined in the protests. This year, however, Victoria Park was empty for the first time in 32 years due to the heavy police lockdown. The Alliance earlier applied to hold a “Remember June 4 Rally” on May 30 and a candlelight vigil in Victoria Park on June 4, but were refused by the police. The Appeal Board of Public Meetings and Processions rejected the Alliance’s appeal on May 29, citing the pandemic and the restriction on gathering. Considering the safety of participants, the Alliance then announced that it would cancel the event, but call on the public to mourn in their own ways and in a safe and peaceful manner. The June 4th Museum, which was closed due to continuous harassment and vandalism, was reopened by the Alliance after the vigil was rejected. However, three days later, the Hong Kong government sent officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department that accused the museum of violating the Places of Public Entertainment Ordinance.

Hong Kong people have their ways
P
eople hold up their phones with the light as they walk near Victoria Park after police closed the venue where Hong Kong people traditionally gather annually to mourn the victims of the Chinese Communist Party’s 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre in the Causeway Bay district on June 4, 2021 .
In recent years, the Hong Kong government has become more and more inclined to Beijing, and after the CCP’s override of Hong Kong’s legislative system to enact the National Security Law last year, Hong Kong’s government has been doing more and more to curry favor with the mainland regime. In the face of strong repression, the people of Hong Kong are still trying to find ways to commemorate the Tiananmen Massacre. On June 4 of this year, people
dressed in black, stood with candles in their hands in Mong Kok, Causeway Bay and other busy streets. Civil society organizations volunteered to distribute candles in many communities. At least seven Catholic churches have set up “memorial masses” with live webcasts. Some people climbed the Lion Rock, the symbol of the spirit of Hong Kong, and Tai Mo Shan, the highest mountain in Hong Kong, to display slogans about not forgetting June 4 and pursuing democracy in Hong Kong.
Google’s Reliance on Wikipedia Helps Communist Party Spread South China Sea Disinformation By Neil Campbell Vision Times
A
June 3 post on social marketing website Reddit’s Wikipedia section revealed Google pulled Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Foreign Affairs Ministry propaganda about ownership of the South China Sea from Wikipedia as if it were factual. The results were displayed on the engine’s Featured Snippet function in response to questions about whether the CCP owns the South China Sea. In a now-removed post on the r/Wikipedia subreddit, a user posted a screenshot of Google results from the question “Does the South China subscription@visiontimes.com
Sea belong to China?” Google’s top response was “China enjoys indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea and the island. China’s stand is based on historical facts and international law. China’s sovereign rights and positions are formed in the course of history and this position has been held by Chinese Government for long…” The case was reported to the subreddit because the author of the now-removed post was concerned about “Wikipedia entries being distorted for propagandistic purposes” and asked “How can this be resolved?” The quote in question came from
a portion of the South China Sea Wikipedia entry where Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu made the claims, laden with Communist Party establishment rhetoric, in reference to a deal between an Indian and a Vietnamese oil company that involved the Sea. As a result of the
Reddit controversy, the Wikipedia entry was scrubbed of Jiang’s rhetorical comments. Google’s Featured Snippet for the question of the South China Sea now references an “Explainer” from website The Conversation, which states, more sanitarily, “China’s claim to the sea is based both on

the Law of the Sea Convention and its so-called ‘ninedash’ line. This line extends for 2,000 kilometers from the Chinese mainland, encompassing over half of the sea. … This concept is important: it means that by definition, the South China Sea is a shared maritime space.” r/Wikipedia moderator “Hands” removed the 801-upvote post, claiming a rule violation because Reddit is “not your personal army,” adding “yes this kind of post encourages people to edit this article as evidenced by the fact that blockquote is already gone.” The removal of a highlyupvoted and trending post, most notably, prevented it
from appearing in prominent user page sortings such as r/All, reducing the traction the story would receive. In an article for Breitbart, former Wikipedia editor who was banned from the platform, T.D. Adler, an author who now posts under a pseudonym due to cancel culture and online harassment, said “Problems with Google search results prominently repeating biased or false information due to its reliance on Wikipedia are not new.” “Google regularly prioritizes information from the online encyclopedia and it has sometimes spread false or inflammatory attacks due to vandalism. This has included incidents affecting Google’s knowledge panels, which are often displayed in the sidebar of search results and use the introduction of Wikipedia articles.” 212-730-6962

Global Minimum Corporate Tax Rate

F
inance Ministers from the wealthy G7 nations announced on June 5 support for an international corporate tax rate of at least 15 percent backed by a global, U.S.sponsored proposal for deterring global corporate and Big Tech tax avoidance. The move will seek to substantiate President Joe Biden’s original plan to raise levies on U.S. companies from 21 to 28 percent to pay for his $6 trillion trio of socialist-style spending bills. The two-day meeting took place in London with Finance ministers of the G7 nations. The group of 7 allies includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the United States. The incident took place on May 31. The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) stated that 16 Chinese aircraft entered the country’s Maritime Zone airspace, which refers to a nation’s airspace over territorial waters. In contravention with international law, Beijing claims the South China Sea as part of its territory. The planes were flying at a speed of 290 knots, at a height of 23,000 to 27,000 feet. They had initially crossed through the Singapore Flight Information Region (FIR) before entering the airspace of Malaysia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Kota Kinabalu FIR. hailed what she called an “unprecedented commitment,” stating that a global minimum tax “would end the race to the bottom in corporate taxation.” Yellen added that the minimum tax agreement would “help the global economy thrive by leveling the playing field for businesses and encouraging countries to compete on positive bases.” The G20 has promised to continue to offer support to “the poorest and most vulnerable countries as they address health and economic challenges associated with COVID-19.”
Huge support from Facebook for the corporate tax hike
An official statement stated that the group “commits to a global minimum tax of at least 15 percent on a country by country basis.”
Facebook also has proved to be a huge supporter of the move regardless of the prospect of having to pay more tax. Nick Clegg, Vice President of Global Affairs, tweeted that the company wanted “the international tax reform process to succeed and recognize this could mean…paying more tax, and in different places.”
According to press information released after the meeting, Britain’s Treasury said that “the largest and most profitable multinationals will be required to pay tax in the countries where they operate — and not just where they have their headquarters.” British Chancellor Rishi Sunak expressed satisfaction at what he called “a historic agreement to reform the global tax system,” saying the G7 had made the system “fit for the global digital age.” Sunak thanked his counterparts for clinching “a deal of historic significance.”
Significant reservations
Notwithstanding, the push for a 15 percent global minimum could still fail. Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development representatives still have to solve contention from low-tax governments. Ireland, which has a corporate tax rate of only 12.5 percent, has expressed reservations about the G7’s plan. Hungary is even lower at 9%. Dublin’s Finance Ministry said
in a statement last month said the country actually risks losing 2 billion Euros annually if a tax hike is enacted. Yellen claimed instead that, “The post-pandemic world must be fairer in particular with regard to international taxation.” But for a country such as Hungary, such a policy will prove a setback as the country attracts corporations through its low tax rate and “will lose their advantage over countries that are not on the path to tax cuts,” the Finance Ministry said in a news release titled Joe Biden Would Raise Taxes With Us Too. On June 5, former President Trump criticized Democrats at the North Carolina Republican State Convention held in Greenville for “attempting to pass” the largest tax hike in American history, saying that the move will affect every American citizen. Trump warned that the rich will simply go to other countries and several companies will also move operations to other nations to escape high taxes.

Malaysia demands explanation
Malaysian Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said in a statement that the ministry will summon the Chinese ambassador, seeking an explanation for the incident. “Malaysia’s stand is clear – having friendly diplomatic relations with any countries does not mean that we will compromise our national security. Malaysia remains steadfast in defending our dignity and our sovereignty,” said the statement. During a press conference,
PRC China Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, stated that China’s air force was only conducting “routine training” over waters south of Nansha Islands, also known as the Spratly Island chain. Luconia Shoals, near which the Chinese planes flew by, is located inside Malaysia’s EEZ and is around 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) away from the Chinese mainland. Beijing expanding in South China Sea amid pandemic
Collin Koh, a Research Fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies who focuses on Southeast Asia geopolitics and maritime security, criticized the Chinese military maneuver which came at a time when Malaysia is grappling with the coronavirus pandemic. A report released in July last year by Malaysia’s National
Audit Department stated that Chinese ships intruded into Malaysian waters in South China Sea 89 times between 2016 and 2019. Despite being turned away repeatedly by the Malaysian Navy, the ships kept trespassing. The audit department stated that the reason Chinese ships kept intruding in the region was to “assert China’s presence with regard to its claims” in the South China Sea, particularly South Luconia Shoals. Chinese intrusion into neighboring territories is nothing new. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) recorded 27 incidents of Chinese planes breaching the Taiwanese identification zone in January; 17 times in February, 18 in March, and 22 times in April. Last month, the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs criticized Chinese activities in its territorial waters. Manila protested the presence of Chinese fishing vessels in the region between Jan. 1 and March 18 as well as shadowing of Philippine Coast Guard vessels by Chinese Coast Guard near the Scarborough Shoal on April 24 and 25. subscription@visiontimes.com

Protests Against Chinese University in Budapest

hina’s plan to set up a university in the Hungarian capital of Budapest has met with strong opposition from locals and politicians. In protest, roads in the city have been renamed after communities and individuals who have been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Back in 2017, the Hungarian National Bank entered into an agreement with Fudan University, with one aim being to establish a campus in the country. Considered one of the top universities in China, Fudan University has consistently ranked in the world’s top 100 universities in recent years. Located in Shanghai, it hosts 31,900 students and 2,700 academic staff. In an online ceremony on April 27, Hungarian Innovation and Technology Minister Laszio Palkovics signed a deal with Fudan University Presi-
dent Xu Ningsheng. According to the deal, Hungary will provide land, buildings, and other facilities necessary to establish the campus. If the deal comes to fruition, Fudan University will become the first Chinese university to have a campus in Europe. The campus is scheduled to open in 2024, and will have four faculties, including social studies, engineering, economics, and medicine. That approximately 6,000 to 8,000 students who matriculate will be staffed by 500 teachers. In addition, the university will engage in joint research projects with other European universities. One major reason why the project has been criticized is because Hungary will incur massive debt with little return. According to documents obtained by Direkt36, the investments into the university will be the largest in Hungary’s higher education sector in recent decades. The total construction cost is estimated to be €1.5 bil-

lion (about 1.82 billion dollars). The money will largely be financed by a Chinese loan, which will need to be repaid later. Moreover, the project will mostly source materials and labor from China. Chinese contractors will likely avoid competition because the documents state, “the construction can only be carried out as a Chinese only project.” Essentially, Hungary will be funding an almost two billion dollar project by taking out a loan, and benefits will mostly be reaped by Chinese companies and workers rather than by Hun-

garian businesses. In protest against the Fudan University project, Budapest’s liberal mayor, Gergely Karacsony, renamed four city roads in tribute to those who have suffered at the hands of the CCP. The roads are named “Free Hong Kong,” “Uyghur Martyrs,” “Bishop Xie Shiguang,” and “Dalai Lama.” The proposed Fudan University site will be surrounded by the four roads. “The signs bear the names of the persons and people who have been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party. This is… a stand for solidarity and freedom, which Hungary has been committed to for 30 years,” Karacsony said. Karacsony is a member of the Dialogue for Hungary party. He plans to run against Orban in next year’s election. A poll by Budapest’s Republikon Institute showed that almost 66 percent of Hungarian citizens opposed the Fudan University project, DW reported.

talian artist Salvatore Garau recently sold an invisible sculpture for thousands of dollars. In other words, pure empty space was sold. He named his work “Lo Sono,” which translates into “I Am.” The artist defended his creation in the face of criticism. “The vacuum is nothing more than a space full of energy, and even if we empty it and there is nothing left, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, that nothing has a weight. Therefore, it has energy that is condensed and transformed into particles, that is, into us,” Garau told Spanish outlet AS. The sculpture went for sale at the Art-Rite, an Italian auction house, in May. Initially priced at 6,000 to subscription@visiontimes.com
9,000 euros, it sold for 15,000 euros (USD 18,300) after several competing bids. Garau says that the artwork should ideally be placed in an area of about 150 cm by 150 cm, free of obstruction. Climate control and special lighting are unnecessary. The buyer received a certificate of authenticity signed and stamped by Garau. “When I decide to ‘exhibit’ an immaterial sculpture in a given space, that space will concentrate a certain amount and density of thoughts at a precise point, creating a sculpture that, from my title, will only take the most varied forms. After all, don’t we shape a God we’ve never seen?” Garau said to the media outlet. “Lo Sono” is not Garau’s only invisible artwork. On Feb. 5, he uploaded a video showcasing a
square drawn in the middle of a road in Milan. Titled “Buddha in contemplazione,” the artist claimed that a Buddha statue was in the blank square. In association with the Italian Cultural Institute, Garau also installed an invisible sculpture named “Aphrodite Piange” (Aphrodite cries) in New York. The sculpture supposedly rests on a circle drawn on the ground. Garau believes that his invisible art has triggered a “small, authentic revolution.”
Invisible painting and guitar
Similar bizarre “artistic creations” have fetched high prices in the past as well. In 2011, media producer Aimee Davison bought an invisible artwork titled “Fresh Air” for $10,000. The artwork was

created by Praxis, a collaborative art team, and was sold through the Museum of Non-Visible Art (MONA) founded by the team. The trend of selling invisible products dates even further back. In 2004, an Arizona man sold an “air guitar” on eBay for $5.50, starting from an opening bid of
$1. The ad stated, “You are bidding on an original Air Guitar from the 80’s. This one was used once at a Bon Jovi concert in 89 for about 3 hours. I have taken it out a few times since generally after about six beers and a couple of fruity shots.” The winner received a letter of authenticity. 212-730-6962

Heavenly Memories By Vision Times Staff
T
here is a legend that every person on earth corresponds to a star in the sky. They came to earth to experience the pain and sorrow of the human world. After time passed, they slowly forgot where they came from. Even though the soul is asleep, the memory of heaven remains deep in everyone's heart. On April 16, 2014, a movie based on a true story, "Heaven Really Exists," was released in the United States. This small production, which was not well received by the media prior to its release, exceeded expectations at the box office, attracting a large mainstream audience in addition to traditional religionists, and receiving rave reviews. Colton Burpo is the son of Todd Burpo, a pastor in Nebraska, USA. Colton Burpo In 2003, at the age of three, Colton's appendix ruptured and his life was in danger. After a series of hospital emergencies, Colton came back alive from the dead. Doctors said it was a miracle that such a serious abdominal infection could be saved. Colton gradually recovered, and the family's life was restored to peace and quiet. One day, Colton inadvertently mentions his long-deceased grandfather and his unborn sister, to the shock of his father, Todd, and mother, Sonja Popper. This shocked his father, Todd, and mother, Sonia Pope. How did Colton learn that the miscarried child, whose sex was not even known to his parents, was a sister, since Colton had not yet been born when his grandfather died?
Don't be afraid, you will return to the world
Little Colton told his parents that he had gone to heaven during the surgery. Not only did he see his deceased family members, but he also talked to angels and saw Jesus riding a colorful horse. It was a beautiful place full of rainbow colors, always bright and vibrant, and never dark. ...... Everyone had wings and could fly everywhere. He described it as "a place that's a lot like Earth in a lot of ways, but people will help you just because they want to help you, not because of their own interests ...... so it's a pretty good place to be. He said he sat on Jesus' lap and He told him not to be afraid and that He would return to the human world.

On February 8, 1994, Weekly World News published a photograph taken by the Hubble Space Telescope on December 26, 1993, showing a huge, crystal-clear city in the distant sky in the vast night sky.
People always choose to deny
The clarity of Colton's account compelled his parents to believe in the truth of their son's experience. The father, Todd, was a pastor, but this was only his profession, and he did not believe in God in his heart. His son's experience led him, as a theologian, to a subversive re-conceptualization of the religious work he had been engaged in. In his subsequent sermons, he used his son's experience to tell people that God really exists and that heaven really exists. Ten years later, Randall Wallace, the famous director and playwright, presented this true story. Wallace brought this true story to the screen. This conservative and simple film touches the deepest part of people's hearts and minds with a memory that seems to have been dormant for thousands of years - the Kingdom of Heaven. Bound by empirical science and materialism, people have always chosen to deny the existence of the Kingdom of Heaven because no one has ever seen it. But since the invention of satellites and the space telescope, the debate over whether there is higher life in the universe is no longer a one-sided denial.
The paradise of scientific testimony
After the Hubble Space Telescope was launched in the United States, NASA discovered many amazing images, including the famous image of a heavenly city and angels walking in space. On February 8, 1994, Weekly World News published a photograph taken by the Hubble Space Telescope on December 26, 1993, showing a huge, crystal-clear city in the distant sky in the vast night sky. Dr. Mason, who took the photo, quoted numerous experts as saying that the city was definitely heavenly. It's it, it's the proof we've been waiting for! Astronomers photographed a 300-million-year-old ancient star, NGC 3532, when they saw some luminous objects that they thought were new, but after careful computer observation and analysis, they came to the shocking conclusion that the lights were emitted by living, humanoid objects," NASA reported. There were seven angels flying together.
The seven angels of the Universe
This is not the first time that human beings have seen angels in space; in 1985, Soviet scientists revealed that Soviet space lab astronauts had also seen a class of angels in space a few years earlier. A NASA scientist said, "Maybe there are millions of angels in the universe. If we say that every person on earth corresponds to a star in the sky. Maybe the existence we once did not believe in is exactly where we came from. So, do you remember your own heavenly world?

Stories From the Students’ Rules : By Vision Times Staff
Duty as a Sibling
for Being a Good StuThe dent“Standards and Child” (Di Zi Gui, 弟子規) is
a traditional Chinese textbook for children that teaches morals and proper etiquette. It was written by Li Yuxiu in the Qing Dynasty, during the reign of Emperor Kang Xi (1661-1722). In this series, we present some ancient Chinese stories that exemplify the valuable lessons from the Di Zi Gui. The second chapter of the Di Zi Gui instructs readers to fulfill their duties as siblings and when with their elders. Harmony between older and younger siblings is essential for people to learn the value of placing others before themselves. One famous example is Kong Rong, who at the age of four knew to share pears with his older and younger brothers (孔融讓梨).
Kong Rong shares the pears Kong Rong (153-208 A.D.) lived in the late Han Dynasty, serving as a senior official during the reign of Emperor Ling. Kong was the 20th-generation descendant of Confucius, who lived some 700 years earlier. He was known for his construction of schools and communities, as well as his poetry and essays. But even as a child Kong Rong was seen as outstanding due to his generosity among his siblings. Kong Rong was the sixth of seven sons in his family. Once, when he was four, he and his brothers were given a basket of pears as a treat. Being the youngest at the time, Kong’s father allowed him to pick the first pear. However, instead of choosing the largest, Kong Rong found and ate the smallest of the pears, leaving the bigger pears for the rest of his brothers. Even after his younger brother was born, Kong Rong continued to take the smallest pear. He said: “My elder brothers should have the bigger pears because they’re older, but my younger brother should also have the bigger pear as it’s my responsibility to take care of my younger brother.” This earned him great praise from his relatives and their friends. Later in life, Kong Rong was known to be good-tempered and hospitable, and his house was always full of guests.

The prime minister who returned his friend’s gold According to Confucianism, much of the etiquette among siblings also applies to the proper relationship between friends. Li Mian (李勉, 717–788), a descendant of the Tang Dynasty imperial line, was a general who later served as chancellor to Tang Emperor Dezong. Li was poor in his youth, but despite this hardship he never touched wealth that was not his. For this he would be posthumously honored with the title zhen jian (真簡), meaning “pure and simple.” Instead of pursuing money, Li Mian sought knowledge and wisdom from books. He even befriended another aspiring scholar, who came from a rich family and was on his way to taking the imperial exams in the capital. Sadly, the scholar came down with a serious illness. Li cared for him, treating him as though he were his own brother. Before succumbing to the disease, the scholar begged Li to accept a sum of gold that was left over after paying for his funeral arrangements. Though he did not want to take the money, he could not refuse his friend’s dying wish, and agreed. After his friend’s death, Li buried the gold with him in the grave. Years later, when meeting a relative of the late scholar, he informed him of the matter, and the family retrieved the gold. Li Mian served as an official for two decades. Though the area he governed as a military commissioner was full of merchants from far and near, he didn’t accept bribes or embezzle funds. Li gave away all the money he didn’t need to sustain himself to his relatives and subordinates. When his relatives received rhino horns and ivory from merchants trying to curry favor with the family, Li would throw them away. When he passed away, it was discovered he had no savings, truly earning his title of “pure and simple.”

Natural Beauty Hacks
S
With
imple Ingredients From Your Kitchen
By Sheridan Genrich
S
ome of the most gentle and most effective skincare ingredients are probably waiting in your kitchen right now. Many of the expensive, natural beauty care products use all-natural ingredients, including natural oils — so why not try spoiling
yourself and use these natural beauty hacks with raw ingredients? The ingredients you select will depend on your skin type, which could be oily, dry, or a combination. It depends really on what your skin needs most.
Your skin changes with the four seasons and with age Right now, I’m using a night cream I made for myself that is just a mix of olive oil, coconut oil, and beeswax. I love it! The beeswax holds it together and makes it
thick, not runny. There are many other ingredients to try as well that are probably in your kitchen cabinet.
Natural ingredients for dry and aging skin Avocado A great moisturizer to use as a face mask, mashed up in your hair, or applied just about anywhere you could use a little extra hydration.
Natural ingredients for combination and oily skin
Egg white
Tea tree oil
Lemons or limes
Raw honey
Tea tree oil is a great skin cleanser, and is useful as a natural cure for blackheads. This is a must-have in your cabinet, as it is also good for cuts, insect bites, and a few drops put into a spray bottle with water works well in kids’ hair if they have lice (i.e., nits).
Lemons or limes great for oily, acne-prone skin, or skin with a build-up of dead cells. Don’t leave citrus on for more than 10-15 minutes, and avoid sunlight immediately after applying it. Lemons in particular can cause photosensitivity (and lightening of the skin) — avoid use on broken skin.
Banana
Papaya
The inside part of a banana peel is good to rub on blackhead-prone areas. Look at the banana peel when you finish rubbing, and you’ll be surprised at how much comes off.
Papaya a really good skin decongestant due to the enzyme papain. Apply evenly and leave on for 15 mins for one of the best enzyme masks around.
Egg white use uncooked as a classic way to improve tone and texture. Spread evenly over the skin, and leave on for 10-15 mins.
A natural antimicrobial that soothes and draws moisture into the skin. Use it in masks or as a spot treatment.
Green tea Green tea full of antioxidants and helpful for reducing redness. Rinse your face in cool green tea for a great way to gently soothe your skin.
Cucumbers and kiwifruit Cucumbers and kiwifruit great for sensitive skin, and for those who need cooling. These are often used over the eyes to relieve puffiness and brighten them. Leave on for at least 10-15 mins.
Watermelon Watermelon good for dry skin and age spots. You won’t need much for it to benefit, and washing off is optional.
Oatmeal A wonderful fast-acting soother with major anti-inflammatory properties. You can drop it in the bath, slather it on your face, or even use it as a gentle scrub.
Extra virgin olive oil & extra virgin coconut oil Both of them keep the skin’s connective tissues strong, which prevents sagging and wrinkles. These are especially good to apply in the early evening and be sure to gently rub in well. They can reduce fine lines, and are great after sun exposure.
There are also foods to eat to improve your skin from the inside, which I will cover in my next article. Try some of these hacks next time you’re at home, traveling, or even staying in a hotel. Just have fun experimenting with them, as well as with fruits or nut oils, bearing in mind some of the tips above. I’d love to know how you get on. Ancient Positions for
T
he ancients practiced Taoism and maintained their health during the day, while also paying attention to the quality of their sleep. In the early Song Dynasty, a well-known Taoist named Chen Bo advocated for the importance of restorative sleep. As he often slept for a few days at a time, people called him the sleeping immortal, and his sleep regimen was well regarded.
JUN 11 - JUN 17, 2021 |
The following introduces the sleep regimens of Chen Bo and other ancients. First of all, when it is time to sleep, you must calm your mind. Before bedtime, don’t do activities that will induce mind activities, such as listening to an exciting program, reading a thought-provoking article, watching videos, talking excessively, dwelling on conflicts, or doing vigorous exercise. It is essential to relax before sleeping.
Restorative Sleep

Xiyi position Lie on your left side with the left arm bent. Place the palm of your left hand under the left side of your face, and stretch the thumb and index finger open to place the left ear in between the two digits. This serves to ventilate the ear. Keep the head and spine upright, and the tongue on top of the palate. Bend your left leg to reach your abdomen, and lie on the bed naturally with your right leg straight and placed on top of your left leg. Put the palm of your right hand on your belly button.
The Xiyi position involves lying on your left side with a straight back, while the Auspicious position involves lying on your right side with a slightly curved body. In these positions, the posture of the body is like a bow and relaxes the joints of the back, legs, and muscles. The ancients believed this way of sleeping is the most stable and comfortable. Both the Supine and Huanyang positions involve lying flat on your back. Your body will be straight, so the muscles are somewhat tighter when compared to sleeping on your side. Nevertheless, all four of these traditional sleeping positions can help you sleep peacefully.
Sleeping with a superior pillow calms the mind
Auspicious position Lie on your right side, with your right hand under the right side of your cheek, and the left hand on the left leg. Press both feet together. The legs are bent and the whole body is arched.
The type of pillow you use will result in either a good or poor night’s sleep. The ancients often slept on either porcelain pillows or mung bean shell pillows. They seldom slept on soft cotton pillows, which today seems counter-intuitive. People who do not sleep well often suffer from excessive upward internal heat. Sleeping on cotton pillows can cause the head to become overheated making the brain swell. Jade, porcelain, mung bean shell, and tea pillows keep the head cooler. This helps people relax more, making it easier to fall asleep. Some may think that a porcelain pillow would be too hard and uncomfortable. Mung bean shell pillows and tea pillows are softer and more comfortable. To sleep well, keep your head cool, yet the feet can be warm. Wearing socks to bed in winter will bring your qi energy to the lower part of the body, which can also help you to sleep well.
Supine position Open your hands and feet and lie on your back. Your head should be comfortable. Put your hands vertically between your legs, or cross your hands on the lower part of the abdomen to relax naturally.
Huanyang position Sleep on your back with the thumbs flexed and held with the remaining four fingers as if a newborn baby is making a fist. Extend both arms and legs out to a neutral position. Close your eyes and look inside, the tongue is on top of the palate; relax your mind.
