T
he U.S. Senate has passed the $1.2 trillion infrastructure package after several weeks of debate. The bill, called the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, was passed 69 to 30 on Tuesday, Aug. 10, with 19 Republicans voting in support and one abstention. The infrastructure plan, which includes $550 billion in new federal spending over a period of five years, sets aside $110 billion for roads, bridges, and related infrastructure, $66 billion for passenger and freight rail, $65 billion for rebuilding the electric guild, $65 billion to expand broadband internet lines, and $55 billion for water pipes. President Joe Biden called the infrastructure plan a “historic investment,” claiming that America is on the e: Chip Somodevilla/ Get Imag t

cusp of an “infrastructure decade” that will transform the nation. “First of all, I want to thank the group of senators — Democrats and Republicans — for doing what they told me they would do. The death of this legislation was mildly premature, as reported. They said they were willing to work in a bipartisan manner, and I want to thank them for keeping their word. That’s just what they did,” Biden said in a White House statement. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said that while the bill “has taken quite a long time” with “detours and everything else,” this will do a whole lot of good for America, and the Senate can be proud it has passed this.” Minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was among the Republicans who voted in favor of the bill, despite widespread opposition to and criticism of the bill within the party. Others in the GOP who voted for the bill include Utah’s Mitt Romney, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and 87-yearold Chuck Grassley from Iowa. On Monday, Aug. 9, Biden and the Democratic Party also proposed a $3.5 trillion spending package. They plan to pass it via budget reconciliation, which would require just 51 Senate votes.

CDC UPDATE ON
NEUROLOGICAL, BLOOD, HEART INFLAMMATION ADVERSE EVENTS From COVID-19 Vaccines
By Steven Li, MD Vision Times
ON
Aug. 10, the CDC published an update regarding reports of adverse events after vaccination with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines. As of July 22, 187 million people in America have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met on July 22 to review benefit-risk analyses, and concluded that the benefits outweighed the risks. However, the agency recommended “Information about rare adverse events should be disseminated to providers, vaccine recipients, and the public.” The document states, “Rare serious adverse events have been reported after COVID-19 vaccination, including Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) after Janssen COVID-19 vaccination and myocarditis after mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna) COVID-19 vaccination.”
Guillain-Barré syndrome
The CDC defines Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) as “a rare disorder where the body’s immune system damages nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis,” usually after infection with a virus or bacteria. While most will make a full recovery, some will “have permanent nerve damage.” On July 12, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had added a warning to the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) fact sheets after “reports of a more than expected number of GBS cases to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) after Janssen COVID-19 vaccination.” VAERS is a database run by the CDC and FDA, which acts as a “national early warning system to detect possible safety problems” with U.S. vaccines. The CDC says “Patients might require intensive care unit (ICU) admission and ventilator support; although most patients recover, GBS can result in permanent paralysis or death.” There have been “100 reports of GBS after Janssen COVID-19 vaccination were received during February 27–June 30, 2021.” TEL : 212-730-6962
A search of the VAERS database using the publicly available CDC WONDER tool reveals that there have been 118 reported cases of GBS after J&J vaccination as of Aug. 10, with the actual number likely in the thousands. Furthermore, there are a total of 483 cases of GBS in VAERS as of Aug. 10, which implies that a significant portion of
Due to severe underreporting of less than 1% of vaccine adverse events to the government, or less than 10% according to other sources, there are likely tens of thousands of unaddressed cases.

cases are being reported after PfizerBioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccination. The CDC has not acknowledged GBS cases after inoculation with mRNA vaccines.
Blood and heart adverse events
Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) is a condition in which blood clots form in the body, interfering with normal blood flow, and the body has low platelets, which are necessary to help the body stop bleeding. Reports after J&J inoculation have mostly occurred in adult women under 50 years old. TTS has also been linked to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. The CDC states, “Through July 8, 2021, 38 cases of TTS within 15 days of vaccination and reported to VAERS met the case definition… These 38 reports were confirmed by physician reviewers at CDC and FDA and reviewed with the Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment Project Investigators, who include hematologists. Four of these patients died.” However, there have been 2,269 cases of thrombocytopenia, or low platelets in the blood, as of Aug. 10, if all three U.S. vaccines under EUA are taken into account. There are 2,440 reported cases of thrombosis, or clotting, from COVID-19 vaccines in the U.S. While the physician reviewers determined that only a miniscule portion met their specific definition of TTS, the presence of thousands of other reports of low platelets and clots is a major anomaly that should spark further investigation. Due to severe underreporting of less than 1% of vaccine adverse events to the government, or less than 10% according to other sources, there are likely tens of thousands of unaddressed cases. The VAERS database contains significantly more reports of myocarditis and pericarditis than mentioned in the CDC article. Using the CDC WONDER tool to search VAERS, as of Aug. 10, there have been 3,728 cases of myocarditis or pericarditis. The number of reported VAERS deaths in the U.S. in 2021 alone, after COVID-19 vaccines were authorized for emergency use, is greater than the number of deaths after inoculation from all vaccines given from 1990 to 2020 combined.
VISION TIMES
By Neil Campbell Vision Times “The report said I sexually harassed 11 women. That was the headline people heard and saw, and reacted to. The reaction was outrage. It should have been. However, it was also false,” said soon-to-be former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo at an Aug. 10 press conference where the scandal-plagued leader announced his resignation. Cuomo’s fall comes after months of holding out when it came to light earlier this year that his orders led to more than 15,000 nursing home deaths at the beginning of the SARSCoV-2 pandemic in 2020. That episode came to a head when what began as a trickle of accounts from former staff members and professional associates ended with 11 women bringing down allegations of gross sexual misconduct by the governor. At the time, Cuomo decided to weather the fallout from the scandal, while his Executive Chamber referred the matter to NY State Attorney General Letitia James’s office for a full investigation of the accusers’ claims.
Cuomo’s attorney: report ‘got the facts wrong’
At a press conference preceding Cuomo’s resignation, his attorney, Rita Glavin, said that the AG’s report “got the facts wrong” and “omitted favorable evidence that didn’t support the narrative.” “The governor had no opportunity to respond, and journalists were saying things — New York Attorney that he had General Letitia James presents the findgroped and ings of an independfondled 11 ent investigation into women, and accusations. that wasn’t true, and that wasn’t in the report. The investigators acted as the prosecutors, judge, and jury of Gov. Cuomo. Nobody vetted the report,” she said. After Glavin made similarly themed statements in Cuomo’s defense last week, AG spokesperson Fabien Levy said in a statement that the accusers’ claims were “corroborated by a mountain of evidence,” and that “any suggestion that attempts to undermine the credibility of these women or this investigation is unfortunate.” Despite his lawyer’s defense, Cuomo said he was resigning because “the best way I can help now is if I step aside and let government get back to government,” apparently referring to the persisting COVID-19 pandemic. “It is a matter of life and death. Government operations and wasting energy on distraction is the last thing government should be.” During his resignation, Cuomo, who was Attorney General himself before becoming governor in 2011, asserted that “the most serious allegations made against me had no credible factual basis in the report.” Cuomo will be succeeded by Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, also a Democrat, making her the first female Governor in New York history. The resignation takes effect in 14 days. 4 W 43rd St. Suite 312 New York, NY 10036

ment Program, Broadband Broadband Connectivity Fund, and “Digital Equity.” Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said that the legislation is “loaded” with projects that have little to do with “real infrastructure.” For example, the bill places $50 million to reducing truck emissions at port facilities, $100 million to research for reducing the temperatures of inner-city streets, and $13 billion to improve air quality and access to alternative fuel types across the U.S., and carbon emissions reduction. Tuberville also accused the bill of not giving Alabama “a fair slice of the pie” while pushing more debt onto the state’s taxpayers. Tuberville noted that the Congressional Budget Office had calculated the legislation to add a $256 billion deficit in America’s account over a 10-year period. The Act has also been criticized for containing provisions less pertinent to infrastructure and more relevant to race, demography, and even taxes. It calls for “quantitative analysis of vulnerable road user fatalities and serious injuries” which “considers the demographics of the locations of fatalities and serious injuries, including race, ethnicity, age, income, and age.” Republican Senator Josh Hawley called the infrastructure package a “woke, leftist bill” that is “full of left-wing politics.”
VISION TIMES
The bill was wasteful as it allocated money for building highways in Canada and supported critical race theory — the Marxismderived doctrine often described as discriminatory and divisive. Republican Senator Josh Hawley The bill classifies women working in the transportation industry as “socially and economically disadvantaged.” It states that women and racial minorities are kept out of federally assisted transportation market due to discrimination. “I just voted NO on the first installment of Joe Biden’s massive left wing agenda – no to gender identity mandates, no to the Green New Deal, no to CRT ‘racial equity’ mandates, no to decimating the energy sector – YES to America,” Hawley tweeted.
Drivers to be monitored, taxed by the mile
Additionally, the bill mandates new regulations in the auto industry, even calling for federal research into limousines. Cars produced three years from now must
include measures to prevent collisions with wild animals, as well as “advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology.” It is unclear how this capability is to be achieved. Included in the bill is a call for federal taxation based on mileage. This would be a “per-mile user fee” calculated based on tools such as the use of third-party on-board diagnostic devices, smartphone apps, telemetric data collected by vehicle manufacturers, and data obtained by car insurance companies. The bill now heads to the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has indicated that she will not take up the infrastructure bill unless the Senate also passed the $3.5 trillion bill. In a statement released on Aug. 10, former President Donald Trump criticized McConnell, saying that “nobody will ever understand” why the GOP leader allowed the bill to get passed. “I have quietly said for years that Mitch McConnell is the most overrated man in politics—now I don’t have to be quiet anymore. He is working so hard to give Biden a victory, now they’ll go for the big one, including the biggest tax increases in the history of our Country,” the statement said. Trump also said that by supporting the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, McConnell has “given up all of his leverage” for the “big whopper of a bill” that will follow, referring to the $3.5-trillion bill the Democrats proposed on Monday.

Canadian, Michael Spavor Sentenced to 11 years in a Chinese Prison for Espionage
C
anadian citizen, Michael Spavor, after years of detention in one of China’s many “residential surveillance at a designated location” (RSDL) prisons has been sentenced, on Wednesday August 11 by a court in Dandong to 11 years in prison. Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, blasted the verdict as “absolutely unacceptable and unjust” adding that, “The verdict for Mr Spavor comes after more than two-and-a-half years of arbitrary detention, a lack of transparency in the legal process, and a trial that did not satisfy even the minimum standards required by international law.” The verdict came down just as Beijing was applying further pressure on Canadian authorities ahead of a Canadian court ruling on whether or not to hand over Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer, to the United States to face criminal charges for allegedly violating sanctions
placed on Iran by the U.S.. Meng has been fighting her extradition to the United States while under house arrest in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Spavor’s arrest by Chinese authorities in 2018 came just days after Meng’s arrest in Canada leading many to conclude that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was engaging in hostage diplomacy tactics. Spavor, and fellow Canadian Michael Kovrig have spent over 975 days in detention in one of China’s RSDL prisons, according to Safeguard Defenders, a human rights NGO that was founded in late 2016 and that’s offices are located in Madrid. In March, China’s statefunded media tabloid, the Global Times, said that Spavor, who resided near the North Korean border and conducted cultural exchanges with the North Koreans, was accused of supplying intelligence to fellow Canadian Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat who worked for the International Crisis Group, that according to their website “is

verdict to Spavor for illegally providing state secrets to other countries. In addition to a lengthy 11 year sentence he had all of his personal property confiscated and was fined 50,000 yuan (US$7,715), according to a statement by the Liaoning Dandong intermediate people’s court.
The court also ordered that Spavor be deported, however it was not clear when this would occur. There is a possibility that Spavor could be deported back to Canada prior to his sentence being completely served. Mo Shaoping, a Beijing based lawyer, told Reuters that deportation generally
occurs after a person has finished their sentence but early deportation has been known to happen in special cases. Spavor has two weeks to appeal the decision but China’s notoriously corrupt justice system rarely grants appeals and is known to post conviction rates of 99.9 percent.

Hong Kong’s Initium Media Announces Move to Singapore to Evade Communist Censorship By Prakash Gogoi Vision Times

nitium Media, a Hong Kong-based independent media outlet, has announced its plan to relocate out of the city. The decision comes amidst the Chinese Communist Party’s crackdown on press freedoms in Hong Kong following the imposition of the National Security Law last year. Initium Media executive editor Susie Wu announced the decision through an open letter to its readers. The letter stated that the “road to freedom has become a harder and harder one” during the past six years of their operation. It pointed out that Hong Kong’s press freedom index has fallen to the 80th spot in the world. Initium is moving its head-
quarters to Singapore, where it plans to produce content via “online and decentralized” methods. “We hope to send you this signal: not to be depressed about [Hong Kong’s] predicament … The road to freedom is long… Thinking and questioning are things everyone can do to safeguard their independence of thought,” the letter said. Founded in August 2015, Initium is a subscribers-only news outlet that has 60,000 paying readers. The company employs around 20 to 30 staff in Hong Kong and Taiwan with some overseas correspondents. The shift to Singapore will not cause lay-offs in Hong Kong as the staff will continue working remotely. Initium is the first Hong Kong-registered media entity to relocate. In an interview with
Hong Kong Free Press, Wu said that Initium ‘s mission “remains unchanged” even though they will no longer be based in Hong Kong. “We hope that relocating our headquarters to Singapore will enable us to better report for Chinese readers in other parts of the world. At the same time, Singapore is similar to Hong Kong in terms of its financial system and language,” Wu said.
Media crackdown in Hong Kong
Initium’s decision comes as a major Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily was forced to shut down in June by the city’s administration. On June 17, authorities froze the assets of the company that owns Apple Daily. The media outlet consequently could not pay electricity costs and wages.
A local television crew interview a supporter outside the Next Media and Apple Daily headquarters in Hong Kong on June 22, 2021 as the embattled pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily has been hit by a wave of resignations as authorities push to see the outspoken tabloid silenced.
Apple Daily published its final print edition on June 24. The paper followed a pro-democracy editorial policy, which did not sit well with the CCP that seeks to apply the restrictive laws of the mainland in Hong Kong. Apple Daily’s closure triggered condemnation from across the world.
“People in Hong Kong have the right to freedom of the press. Instead, Beijing is denying basic liberties and assaulting Hong Kong’s autonomy and democratic institutions and processes, inconsistent with its international obligations,” President Joe Biden said in a statement on June 24.
According to Reporters Without Borders, RTHK is being subjected to a “fullblown intimidation campaign” by the government that aims to restrict the broadcaster’s editorial autonomy. In June, the Hong Kong Journalist Association said that press freedoms in the city were “in tatters.”

yphoon Lupit, which was active in the Pacific region from August 2 to August 9, made landfall twice in China before forcing the evacuation of more than 300-thousand people in the prefectures of Hiroshima, Shimane and Ehime in Japan. Lupit, the ninth typhoon of the 2021 Pacific typhoon season, first made landfall in the city of Shantou, in China’s southern province of Guangdong at approximately 11:20 a.m. Thursday August 5th before heading back out to sea only to come ashore again in east China’s Fujian Province, bringing heavy downpours and forcing the evacuation of thousands. Lupit made its second landfall in Dongshan County in the city of
Zhangzhou at approximately 4:50 p.m. on the 6th with maximum wind speeds reaching 18 meters per second near its center, Xinhua reported. Fujian Province evacuated upwards of 25,000 people and ordered the docking of some 153 fishing vessels. In addition, the storm forced the closure of 218 harbors and coastal scenic loca-
tions as well as 88 ferry lines. The cities of Fuzhou and Zhangzhou issued an emergency response for flood and waterlogging amid torrential downpours. The storm brought the risk of heightened geological disasters as the typhoon lingered in the province’s coastal areas. Delta Variant Infections Surge in China Despite Mass Vaccination Wuhan under lock down, again
By Todd Crawford
In the city of Wuhan, where the virus first took hold, then spread across the globe, local authorities have again ordered mass nucleic acid testing of the entire population while suspending flights, trains and cancelling professional basketball league games. Wuhan, a provincial capital and home to approximately 11-million people, is only the latest city to under-go city-wide testing.
C
hina is battling its worst COVID-19 outbreak in months — fueled by the Delta variant — which has forced authorities in several regions to lock down cities, suspend key transportation routes, cancel flights and order mass nucleic acid testing for large swaths of the population. On Monday, Aug. 9, the Chinese authorities confirmed another 125 cases of the novel coronavirus nationwide including in the city of Yangzhou in Jiangsu Province. At least 58 people had been diagnosed with COVID-19 on Aug. 5, the highest number admitted to by the authorities in a single day in the current outbreak. By Friday, Aug. 6, more than 4.5 million residents were ordered to stay home; highways and rail were shut down to curb the virus. In flood-hit Zhengzhou city, reports have surfaced indicating another 35 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases. All of the 35 cases are believed to be asymptomatic, according to the headquarters of COVID-19 prevention and control. “Since July 30, Zhengzhou has

On Sunday night, August 8, Lupit made landfall on Japan’s southwestern island of Kyushu forcing some 300-thousand people to evacuate and resulting in 63 flights being cancelled. At its peak, Lupit created wind speeds that reached 45-knots or 85 kilometers per hour with wind gusts being recorded as high as 108 kilometers per hour in Japan. Widespread restrictions enacted in Beijing
In Beijing, China’s bustling capital, authorities restricted entry into the city for people coming from high-risk areas in an attempt to protect the capital from a further surge in COVID-19 infections. Flights and long-distance trains from affected areas were cancelled with authorities urging residents to stay home and avoid all travel to any affected regions. Residents of Beijing need to sup-

At one point on Monday morning, the storm resulted in a local weather agency issuing the highest-level rain alert possible for the town of Kitahiroshima in Hiroshima Prefecture. According to local firefighters no casualties were reported as of 8:30 am Monday. To date, the 2021 typhoon season has experienced a total of 24 tropical depressions 11 of which were designated as storms, three as typhoons and one as a super typhoon. Surging infections despite mass inoculation
According to the New York Times’ COVID-19 Vaccination Tracker, mainland China has administered in excess of 1.78 billion vaccine doses, however this level of inoculation does not appear to be slowing the spread of the disease. China’s hardline “zero-Covid” strategy appears to be buckling under the stress of the Delta strain as breakthrough infections surge among the vaccinated public. The Delta variant, which appears to cause more severe illness and spreads as easily as chickenpox, is wreaking havoc across the globe and is being blamed for numerous “break-through” infections in China. China developed two coronavirus vaccines, Sinovac and Sinopharm that were both approved by WHO for global use and have been heavily relied upon to vaccinate the Chinese public. The Sinovac vaccine has been deemed 51 percent effective and the Sinopharm vaccine 78.1 percent effective. Over 90 countries are currently using the Chinese vaccines, according to Axios, including Bahrain, Chile, Mongolia and Seychelles; however, all of these countries are experiencing a recent surge in infections.

he 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics has drawn to a close, and America clinched the top spot in the medal tally. At 113 medals, the United States significantly outperformed second-ranked China with 88 total medals. The Russian Olympics Committee (ROC) came in third with 65 medals. Host Japan was ranked fifth with 58 medals, just behind Great Britain with 65 medals. In terms of gold medals, the U.S. came in first with 39, with China in a close second with 38. Japan came in third with 27 gold medals, while Great Britain and the ROC ranked fourth and fifth. The majority of Team USA’s medals were won by women. 66 out of the 113 medals, or 58.4 percent, were won by female athletes, the highest number of medals won by American women in a single Olympic event. Back in the 2012 London Olympics, women won 55.8 percent of America’s medals. The 2020 Olympics was the fourth consecutive time that women outnumbered men in the medal tally. According to Olympic gold medalist Donna de Varona, one of the key factors in the success of American women at the Olympics is Title IX, which was signed into law by Republican President Richard Nixon in 1972. Title IX mandated equal treatment for girls and women in sports, opening the door for increased female participation.

Although China secured second place in the Olympic tally, the country’s athletes faced flak from citizens. At the mixed doubles table tennis tournament, the Chinese won silver after losing to Japan in the finals and had to make a tearful apology to their countrymen. Table tennis is a sport that China usually dominates in, and some critics said losing to Japan meant that they “failed the nation.” “To these people, Olympic medal tables are realtime trackers of national prowess and, by extension, of national dignity. In that context, someone who fails at a competition against foreigners has let down or even betrayed the nation,” Dr. Florian Schneider, director of the Netherlands’ Leiden Asia Centre, said to BBC. Another controversy arose with Chinese cycling sprint champions backtracking after wearing
badges featuring the silhouette of Mao Zedong. The players promised that such an incident would never happen again. The Olympic Charter prohibits any propaganda on the basis of religion, race, or politics. Host nation Japan secured its highest medal tally in history with 58 medals, eclipsing its 2016 Rio Olympics performance with 41 medals. An article published by NPR analyzing Olympic medal wins found that athletes from host countries usually have an edge over foreigners, winning more medals than they would otherwise. One reason for this phenomenon is that foreign athletes travel and perform in countries that have a different environment and time zone than theirs, which affects their performance. Another reason is they receive tremendous support from the home crowd.

Apart from athletes not competing due to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) stipulations and the absence of crowds, this was the first chapter of the Olympics that featured transgender athletes openly competing in the games. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently admitted that its current guidelines regarding transgender athletes are flawed in light of the latest scientific findings. As such, the IOC will be revising the rules for transgender athletes participating in the games. The originally established rules from 2015 state that a biological male who wishes to compete as a transgender woman needs to have a measured testosterone level of 10 nanomoles per liter for a period of at least one year prior to the tournament.
Worsening food shortages
The rain comes after North Korea was forced to release emergency military rice reserves as its food shortage issues worsen. North Korea’s food shortage is being widely attributed to a conf luence of circumstances including a recent heat wave, a sustained drought, COVID19 supply chain disruptions and international sanctions. No reports of mass starvation or social unrest have surfaced from the rogue regime but experts expect a further deterioration of the country’s food supplies until the autumn harvest. It’s estimated that North Korea requires around 5-million tonnes of food to
The IOC has now decided to revise the rules based on new findings that 10 nanomoles per liter would still be at least twice the appropriate level. An average natural-born woman has testosterone levels of only around five nanomoles per liter. During a meeting, IOC medical and scientific director Richard Budgett said that “agreeing on another number is almost impossible and possibly irrelevant. You can debate that endlessly.” According to Joanna Har per, a scientist, transgender activ ist, and former athlete, the biological changes in transgenders vary from sport to sport. “We’ve found that hemoglobin levels in trans women when they go on hormone therapy will go from male to female levels of hemoglobin within four months. And hemoglobin’s the single most important physiological factor in endurance sports. On the other hand, it’s abundantly clear that trans women won’t lose all their strength advantages,” Harper said.
North Korea’s state television reported that approximately 5,000 people nationwide were forced to evacuate as floods damaged over 1,100 homes.
feed its 26-million citizens and that this year North Korea is short approximately one million tonnes. At a closed-door parliamentary meeting of Seoul’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) it was revealed that an ongoing heat wave and drought have wiped out rice and corn fields as well as killing a large number of livestock in the region, according to HaTae-keung, a politician who was in attendance at the meeting, Sky News reported.
VISION TIMES
Kim Byung-kee, another South Korean politician in attendance at the meeting, said that the price of rice has doubled in the country from early this year and has begun to soar again. Earlier this year reports surfaced that a single kilogram of bananas costs as much as US$45.00 in the country. In addition to t he extreme weather affecting crop yields, North Korea saw imports from neighboring China drop by approximately 90 percent
between April and May this year, further exacerbating the issue. Chinese data shows that total trade with North Korea has fallen by around 80 percent since last year following border closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s suspected that paranoia over COVID-19 most likely contributed to North Korea closing its border with China in Jan. 2020, worsening an already dire food crisis and making it difficult for North Korean farmers to procure fertilizer. Earlier this year the North Korean leader was reported to have asked his officials and people to “wage another, more difficult ‘Arduous March’” The words, “Arduous March” were last used to describe a period of time in the 1990s when the country suffered mass starvation after the collapse of the Soviet Union, North Korea’s only reliable ally, left the country without crucial aid.

Volcanic Activity Is More Pervasive Than You Might Think
Behemoth of Europe
More alarming still, is a possible emergence of Europe’s largest active volcano Marsili, which rests at the bottom of the Tyrrhenian Sea near Naples. Scientists fear that the eruption of the underwater volcano could cause a tsunami that might threaten the south of Italy. There are at least seventy underwater volcanoes in the Tyrrhenian Sea that could pose a threat to the region, according to INGV volcanologist Guido Ventura.

nterest has been stirred in volcanoes recently after Indonesian photographer Gunarto Song, on a mission to capture the awesome spectacle of Mount Merapi’s eruption, chanced to capture a meteor striking the volcano in an instantly viral photo. After the meteor strike, Song continued to document the beautiful, yet violent power of the erupting volcano; an alarming sight for a surprising number of communities around the world. According to USGS there are approximately “1500 potentially active volcanoes worldwide,” and that doesn’t include the underwater volcanoes, which Smithsonian Ocean says account for 70 percent of all eruptions.

The Ring of Fire
The most active of Indonesia’s 120 active volcanoes, Mount Merapi, meaning “the one making fire,” is situated just north of the city of Yogyakarta, on the island of Java. According to Yogyakarta’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center, clouds of hot ash, rapid pyroclastic flows, and a mixture of rock, debris, lava and gasses were fired out of the mountain, with a rumbling that could be heard kilometers away. The clouds of ash shrouded over villages and towns in the vicinity. Eruptions in the past have not only damaged the cultivated lands below, but also taken a toll on human life, with the 2010 erup-

tion killing 347 people. Villagers living on the fertile lands surrounding the volcano were thus warned to be on high alert and stay five kilometres away from the crater’s mouth.
ogist Chris Waythomas with the Alaska Volcano Observatory. On the 5th of August, the volcano released low-level ash emissions, raising the volcanic threat level from yellow to orange, which indicates the beginning of an eruption. Waythomas considers the peak as an open system volcano, as its “magmatic plumbing system is open and magmas can move to the surface really fast and it can start erupting almost with no warning.” Besides Mount Pavlov, two other Alaskan volcanoes, Great Sitkin and Semisopochnoi Volcano, are also shooting up ash and spewing lava respectively, potentially ready to erupt as well.
Alaskan eruptions
In the United States alone, there are 169 I potentially active volcanoes. Mount Pavlof, one of the most active volcanoes on the Aleutian Islands, could go off without much warning, according to geol-
European eruptions
On May 19th, 2021, two Italian volcanoes, Mount Etna and Mount Stromboli, erupted simultaneously, as reported by Italy’s volcanology institute, the Instituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV).

VISION TIMES
Mount Etna erupted once again on the 9th of August, sending shockwaves that shook communities in the Catania province of northeast Sicily with explosions in the morning. Despite the sheer intensity of the blast, Boris Behncke of INGV says there was “nothing abnormal” about the activity. However, warnings were issued of “possible delays” with incoming and outbound flights wishing to avoid contact with volcanic ash in the air.
While the focus is on the larger, prominent volcanoes, experts believe that there are possible domino effects from smaller eruptions. “At the moment, calculations are too skewed towards giant explosions or nightmare scenarios, when the more likely risks come from moderate events that disable major international communications, trade networks or transport hubs.” said Dr. Lara Mani from CSER. Mani and her colleagues deduced that minor eruptions could still release ash clouds, mudflows and landslides that disrupt communications and cause damage and economic loss. “We need to move away from thinking in terms of colossal eruptions destroying the world, as portrayed in Hollywood films,” added Mani. “The more probable scenarios involve lower-magnitude eruptions interacting with our societal vulnerabilities and cascading us towards catastrophe.” Although we like to take in the beautiful, fiery glow of eruptions, the unleashed power of a volcano is something to be viewed with respect and caution. Regarding potential catastrophe, if we heed Dr. Mani’s predictions, we might do well to brush up on our basic survival skills, should these eruptions somehow set us back to a primitive state. As your friendly neighborhood boy scout would say, “Always be prepared!”

ccording to Wall Street behemoth JPMorgan, the fairytale spun by pundits about Reddit’s WallStreetBets organizing to “squeeze” badly positioned hedge fund short sellers of video game retailer Gamestop (NYSE: GME) in what has been affectionately dubbed the “Gamestop Rebellion” is simply false. Peng Cheng, the JPMorgan quantitative and derivatives strategy analyst, wrote to clients in a note: “Although retail buying was portrayed as the main driver of the extreme price rally experienced by some stocks, the actual picture may be much more nuanced,” according to CNBC.

Donated Orange Peels Help Australian Farmers
“I’ve had up to 150 mice here in one night. I Craig Rayner added:
had grain stored in the shed in bags. The mice demolished three-quarters of a tonne of grain in each bag. Prior to the plague, it was ‘normal’ for us to see one mouse every two weeks. So that is well and truly more than ‘normal’ for us. Luckily, we have not had mice in the same proportions as other places, where there’s a blanket of mice and rats. But I am expecting more mice to come our way.

hen orange juice is made, almost half of the fruit gets wasted, according to research. In most cases, the discarded orange peels are destined for the landfill. The peels taste bitter and so they can’t be used for culinary purposes, for sure. However, in Kulnura, New South Wales (NSW) Central Coast region, one orange juice producer has come up with a unique way of utilizing discarded orange peels to aid local farmers, and the story of how the donated orange peels are helping farmers battle a plague of mice has gone viral.
The majority of people who drink orange juice or eat the fruit for breakfast or as a snack discard the outer orange peels peel and never give it a second thought. Very few people have any idea how useful the orange peels can prove to be.
An Australian-Italian family business, Eastcoast Foods and Beverages now gives away the orange peels to farmers who use the collected peels to feed their sheep and cattle. The farmers need only pay the amount required for transporting the orange peels. The managing director of Eastcoast Foods and Beverages, Samuel Lentini, told SBS: “In general, we produce about 150,000 litres of juice in a week from 200 acres of fruit. So in one year alone, we are able to donate 200 tonnes of orange peel to farmers. Donating our orange peel is just another way we can help farmers get through a different kind of struggle.”
Mice do not like nibbling on orange peels Farmers in NSW who had already been coping with a drought are now finding themselves faced with a mice plague. As the grain and hay used to feed their livestock is eaten by voracious packs of rodents, the farmers have been relieved to find that mice do not like nibbling on orange peels and that it can be used as an alternative food source for their sheep and cattle. The mice plague affects farms across northern Victoria, South Australia, southern Queensland, and NSW. Lentini said his company wants to help fellow farmers. The company is doing its level best to supply peels to farmers who need them the most.
The farmers in NSW are grateful to the company for offering the orange peels. Craig Rayner, a sheep and cattle farmer who received the peels, said: “I used the peel mostly for my sheep. It’s not a food that sheep can solely eat. They have to have mineral blocks and access to dry food as well as the orange peel. It takes a bit of time for them to get used to it but once they get the taste of it, they always go back for more.” (SBS) The donated orange peels have given Rayner a sense of security and leaves him confident that he will still be able to feed his livestock even if the rodent situation gets worse. What would have otherwise been a waste product is now playing a critical role for Australian farmers trying to weather the harsh treatment they’ve been receiving at the hands of Mother Nature.

Chronic bedwetting cured through hypnosis

dgar Cayce, considered an important pioneer in the New Age movement, was believed to have had an extraordinary gift. He could enter into a state of sleep, yet clearly communicate his visions to a companion. These visions seemed to come from another time and place, as they often correctly diagnosed and prescribed the remCover of Joseph Miledy for ailments lard’s “Edgar Cayce of people Mystery Man of Mirawhom he cles Who Saw Tomorrow, Today and Yeshad never terday,” published by met, even Gold Medal in 1956. if the person was thousands of miles away. Born in 1877 on a farm in Christian County, Kentucky, Cayce dropped out of school in the eighth grade. He knew nothing about medicine and had never read an anatomy book, yet his diagnoses in a hypnotic state used accurate anatomical and medical terms, and his treatment plans yielded remarkable results. He is said to have cured a Canadian Catholic priest of epilepsy, relieved an Ohio high school student of severe arthritis, and helped a boy with glaucoma regain his eyesight. These are the kind of uncanny performances that made Cayce famous. The distance Cayce was purported to span in his readings was not limited to space. Some of his most fascinating cases involved the interpretation of events from ages ago, when the patient lived in a “previous incarnation.” Upon reviewing the records of these readings, Cayce came to believe that people’s misfortunes and sufferings in this life had a precise causeand-effect relationship with the “karma” generated by bad deeds in previous lives.

Among Cayce’s 14,000 past life readings, some cases went back to the time of Nero in ancient Rome. Behold! The same thing returns to oneself!” In another case, Cayce’s reading determined that the patient, a girl who suffered tuberculoses of the hip, had also been a noblewoman of the royal court of Nero’s time in her past life. She, too, had enjoyed watching the persecution of Christians in the arena, and especially laughed at the sight of a girl’s body being torn apart by a lion.

An 11-year-old boy had suffered since the age of two from chronic bedwetting, nearly every night. His parents had taken him to many renowned doctors but were unable to cure him. Cayce was their last hope. Cayce interpreted from his reading that the boy had been a Puritan priest in a previous life, living in the 16th or 17th centuries during the time of witch trials, when he had enjoyed inflicting punishment on accused witches by dipping them quickly in and out of a cold pool. Cayce recommended that the mother apply the hypnotic tool of “suggestion.” When the boy was about to fall asleep at night, she repeatedly whispered “You are kind and good, you are willing to make everyone happy, you are willing to help everyone you come in contact with.” The boy was said to have stopped wetting the bed that very night, and within a few months of this treatment, he was entirely cured. Here, the mother’s “suggestion” seemed to have touched the child’s subconscious memory of his past life, helping him untie the knots in his heart. Once he felt confident to be his good and tolerant self, the child’s behavior changed drastically; his heart became good, and in the future, he would help others and do good deeds to redeem his past life’s sins; thus, the punishment was no longer necessary, and his illness was correspondingly cured.
The theory of reincarnation
Cayce also found that if a patient could reflect on himself and improve his nature while enduring suffering, the purpose of punishment would be achieved, and the person’s troubles could be resolved.
While many, including Cayce himself during his earlier years, have found the idea of reincarnation difficult to accept, others see it as a natural continuation of the body’s undying soul. While mainstream Christian teachings do not endorse a belief in reincarnation, it plays a central role in other faiths, notably Hinduism and Buddhism, which hold that one must repay the karmic debts owed for wrongdoing in both this life, and those accumulated in other lives as well.. Upon learning that his past life interpretations were accurate and credible, and could be used for good, Cayce gradually broadened his mind and accepted his gift to interpret past lives. With this, he not only improved his ability to heal, but also had unique insights in the fields of philosophy, history, and ancient civilizations. His prophetic abilities, too, were extraordinary. According to supporters, he was able to accurately predict the economic crisis of 1929, World War II, and the accidental death of the President of the United States, giving him the nickname “Sleeping Prophet.”

WHY ELEVEN PLAYERS MAKE A FOOTBALL TEAM? By Hermann Rohr
W
Soccer, a legacy from ancient times
hy does a football team have the number of players it does? A soccer team didn’t always have 11 players. During the 19th century in England, teams had 15 to 21 or even more players. Sometimes, one football team even had more players than the other. It wasn’t until 1870 that the number of players in teams that were part of the UK Football Association (FA) was fixed.
Soccer, as football is called in England, is said to have ancient roots that date back to as far as 5000-3000 B.C. There is apparently evidence that the Chinese played this game. They called it “Tsu Chu,” which loosely translates to “kickball.” With records mentioning the game going all the way back to the Han Dynasty (206 B.C-A.D. 220), it’s fair to say that soccer is a very old game. But, maybe a coincidence or not, the Romans played a game called “Harpastum,” where the goal was to get hold of and keep possession of a small ball for as long as possible. However, it resembled more rugby than soccer.
How was it played?
Back in the day during the advent of football, players didn’t wear uniforms, nor did they carry a number that identified them. It was common to either wear a hat or a band to be distinguished. It wasn’t until the 1940s that teams consisted of a fixed number of players, and a number on the player’s shirt was used to identify each of the players from 1 to 11. The first football World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, also known as the first FIFA World Cup. Thirteen teams competed against one another in what was then considered to be a major sporting event. Among the competing teams were seven from South America, four from Europe, and two from North America. In the final, the hosts and pre-tournament favorite, Uruguay, defeated Argentina 4-2 in front of a crowd of 68,346 people, becoming the first nation to win the World Cup.
Why does a football team have 11 players?
In England, cricket was regarded as a king’s sport, with teams consisting of 11 players. Some argue that the number of players that make up a football team was inspired by the number of players in a hockey team. Others claim that it was the size of the cricket field, which only had space for eleven players per team. Till today, no one has debated the number of players on a football team.
Conclusion
While it’s not easy to single out why a soccer team has the number of players it does, it is obvious that the game itself has a long history. It also turns out that humans have always had playful ways to give way to their competitive nature. Even in a climate as strict and rigid as the military, in ancient China, people found time to amuse themselves and show off their skill in a playful way. Beyond the trophy and the inevitable success of one team, or nation, over all others, it seems one of the most compelling characteristics of soccer is that it joyfully brings people of different walks together for at least 90 minutes.
The Chinese predecessor of soccer involved kicking a leather ball stuffed with fur into a small hole. It is recognized by FIFA as the earliest form of football. Evidence shows it is first mentioned as an exercise in a Chinese military work from the 3rd-2nd century B.C.

The last time the Club, known as the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club or just AELTC, was closed was during WWII when the stadium was bombed in October 1940, and it reopened to the public with reduced capacity in 1946. Wimbledon Is Not Just About Tennis July 1, 2021. In cooperation with the UN climate summit COP26, which will take place in Glasgow in November, awareness of the environment was heightened. Several roundtables were scheduled on AELTC channels throughout the day. Regulars would have immediately noticed that this year their Wimbledon strawberries came in recyclable cardboard packaging. Other environmental protection measures included the introduction of a reusable cup for cold drinks and the recycling of used strings from rackets.
According to AELTC Chief Executive Sally Bolton OBE: “We believe that the AELTC and The Championships have a meaningful role to play in helping to protect the environment, today and for the future. Changes to our climate are accelerating, and we have a responsibility to play our part, mitigating our own impacts, ensuring we have a climate-resilient estate for the future, and using our influence to support this important cause.” Recycled cardboard packaging is not the only change AELTC has made. The meals are being prepared by Food & Drink at Wimbledon, the AELTC’s year-round catering partner, led by executive chef Adam Fargin, and will be distributed to those in need by City Harvest, the food surplus distribution charity with whom the AELTC has a long-standing relationship.
In addition to the meal distribution program, which is currently planned to run for the next three months, a donation of funds has been made to City Harvest by the Wimbledon Foundation – the charity of the AELTC and The Championships – to support the organization which has provided more than 1.5 million meals during lockdown to date. Adam Fargin said: “It’s wonderful to be able to support our long-standing partner, City Harvest, who helps to feed vulnerable people in the local area. 1. Oral fragrance pills
In the Northern Song Dynasty, formulas for making breath fresheners were recorded in the General Records of Sheng Ji. One recipe for “Oral Fragrance Pills” consisted of powder ground from 15 herbs — including cloves, patchouli, Lysimachia foenum-graecum Hance, nardostachys, female ginseng, cassia bark, Saussurea costus, ligusticum, nut grass, nutmeg , areca nut, wild angelica, eagle wood, and musk. The powder was mixed with honey and refined into pills the size of hazelnuts. They were held in the mouth like lozenges. They killed germs, moisturize the mouth, and are able to stop bleeding and relieve swelling.
2. Tea According to records, the Song Dynasty poet Su Shi created a method of oral hygiene using strongly brewed tea. Ordinary tea was brewed thickly and used to rinse the mouth after a meal. It removes any grease and food particles, and is gentle on the digestive system. In the great feasts of the Ming Dynasty, there was always tea served after the meal. Not only can tea be consumed as a beverage, but it can also be used to improve the digestive system and freshen the breath.
6. Willow twig and horsetail toothbrush
3. Salt In Dream of the Red Chamber, also known as The Story of the Stone, the protagonist, Jia Baoyu, was known to clean his teeth with salt every morning. Salt strengthens the teeth and promotes health. It is a holistic way to maintain oral hygiene.
4. Poria/ tuckahoe fungus During the Song Dynasty, a paste used to clean teeth appeared. The poria fungus was brewed into a concoction and used as toothpaste. The concoction was spread through the mouth either with the fingers or willow branches.
5.Fruits, vegetables, and spices According to records, fruits, vegetables, and spices are able to freshen the breath. Common breath freshening agents include mandarin oranges, oranges, parsley, Sichuan pepper, and fennel. During holidays, men would often wear a pouch containing these spices, which they would sprinkle into their mouths before meeting guests. The smell of spice would conceal any bad breath. Although it seems amusing, it might be worth a try!
The willow twig is the oldest oral cleaning tool in Chinese civilization. During the late Tang Dynasty, a willow branch twig was soaked in water and then chewed. The fiber of the willow would protrude like a fine-tooth comb, making it a very convenient toothbrush. The ancient Chinese idiom “chewing wood at dawn” originated from this practice. Other types of toothbrushes were produced in the Southern Song Dynasty. There were shops that specialized in manufacturing and selling toothbrushes made of bones, horns, bamboo, wood, etc., with two rows of holes drilled into the brush’s head, and then filled with hair from a horse’s tail. They looked very similar to modern toothbrushes.

Longans: A Simple Fruit That Can Help Treat Insomnia

By Emma Lu
Longans are a wonderful and delicious fruit that can be used as a remedy for many health issues. People usually only eat them as a snack and often don’t know their valuable health benefits.
ometimes called a berry and sometimes called a nut, longans are actually neither. Instead, they are a fruit related to the lychee. They grow in clusters on trees. The fruit is very round and about the size of a large grape. Beneath the tough, tan shell, you’ll find the white flesh of the fruit surrounding a dark seed. This structure is the source of its nickname — dragon’s eye. The flesh of the longan fruit resembles that of a grape in taste and texture, but longans have a hint of musk in the flavor. Native to China, longans are very popular in Asia, and an Asian market may be your best bet for finding fresh fruit. Traditional Chinese medicine uses both the fruit and the seed for healing and for general health. According to a senior Chinese medicine doctor, when a patient suffering from chronic insomnia visited him, instead of prescribing medicine, he asked the patient to go home and drink water boiled with dried longans. After a short period of time, the patient’s insomnia was successfully cured.
Stress or fatigue According to The Book of Changes, longans are the best remedy when you are fatigued. Whenever I feel fatigued, burned out, or over-stressed, I boil some water with longans and drink it. Or I eat 20 to 30 pieces of dried longans; by doing so, I feel instantly refreshed. Dizziness and headaches While studying Chinese medicine, I found the remedy to cure my dizziness and headaches. I peeled 30 pieces of dried longans and then boiled them with the seeds for 20 minutes from when the water started boiling. I then took out the longans and seeds, let the water cool down, and drank it. In less than two hours, I felt very refreshed. I then went out and bought a box of dried longans for use at home. One winter afternoon, I caught a cold after washing my hair. I felt my head was heavy, but I didn’t mind it much as I thought that it wasn’t a big deal and that I could get over it soon. However, the next day, I was a lot worse. As usual, I grabbed a handful of dried longans and boiled them with water. After drinking it, I recovered quickly.
