Beauty

Guide

This Months Top Tip Before applying your powder, try blotting your foundation with a tissue. This will remove any excess oils, and help to stop you from getting shiny.

Even when your skin is looking tired and pale, you can look blooming lovely by adding a touch of colour to your cheeks. Blushers are an essential part of a beauty regime for those without a natural rosy glow. There are so many product types and colours to choose from and many different ways to apply them. If makeup is like an artist's pallet, then blusher is the sculpting tool. Whatever face shape you were born with, you can dramatically alter your look and refresh your appearance. if you have slightly chubby cheeks and would like a more contoured look, apply blusher in the hollows, just below your cheekbones. For accuracy, suck in your cheeks and brush in upward strokes in the hollows. Use an illuminating highlighter along the top of your cheekbones. This will create the illusion of fuller cheekbones and a slimmer face. the apples of your cheeks are the fullest part. If you use a pale illuminating shade applied directly to your apples, it will instantly create a fresh looking glow. do not get carried away with applying blusher. If applied elsewhere on your face it will look as though you are wearing the wrong shade of foundation. Stick to the apples or hollows. If you want to add colour in other parts, opt for a bronzer that can be swept all over your skin instead. Hold a piece of blank white paper up to your makeup-free face. What colour jumps out? Most average, pale skin has yellow undertones which look best with warm blushers such as peach or brown. If you can identify red undertones, opt for cool pinks. Red tones usually suit silver jewellery, while yellow suit gold.

the ideal choice, for most. Powders can either be loose, compact or in ball form. They are easy to apply and will not overly disturb your foundation base. Once applied over your base, powder blushers are long lasting and easy to add to for an evening look. these must be applied over liquid foundation but before you set your foundation with a powder. You can obtain a fresh, youthful finish with a cream or stick blusher and are a good choice on warm summery days as they are more likely to stay put. these are an acquired skill. Fluids, sometimes described as cheek stains, can be difficult to blend to a natural finish. Lots of blending may disturb your base so they are best used in small areas, like your apples. These are great for adding a healthy glow to your face well-protected face on holiday.

7 Easy steps to make you look younger… Step 1. Downplay wrinkles by applying highlighter to creases. This will reflect the light and counter the shadow. Concealers only make lines look more prominent

Step 2. Use

a mask to tone and tighten your skin. The tightening effect is cosmetic and temporary, but using a mask has other benefits as well, such as cleaning out your pores, and conditioning your skin Step 3. Brighten

droopy eyes: Grooming eyebrows gives the illusion of lifted lids, and having more skin showing at the brow bone opens up the entire eye Step 4. Instant

Eye Lift - use a lash curler to make eyes look more open and alive

Step 5. Skip

the face powder, they tend to collect in creases and make wrinkles more prominent; and the dry powder look is out, anyway Step 6. If

you’ve got longish hair, pull it back into a ponytail. It’s a youthful hairstyle, for one, but the point is it pulls the skin around your temples up and back Step 7. Use

a good moisturiser to hydrate and plump up your skin cells. Make sure it is mineral oil free so it doesn’t clog your pores and cause breakouts

Horoscopes Libra (Sep 24th-Oct 25th) The first three weeks of October is the time of year when retreat is absolutely necessary. Give yourself a time-out from the stress and impose some long overdue solitude in your life, so you can properly regroup and rebalance.

Oct 2011

Aquarius (Jan 21st-Feb 19th) Circumstances continue to call for you to show you will not be manipulated by those who think they can treat you like a puppet. You can't show someone obedience and respect when you're starting to discover how devious and false they can be.

Gemini (May 22nd-June 21st) A welcome change to your usual routines could have lasting and pleasing results. If you're enjoying the early stages of a new friendship or romance, a good sign will be when you receive an invitation to meet your partner's family or close friends.

Scorpio (Oct 24th-Nov 22nd) Stop and consider before you start to speak and you aren't likely to put your foot in it! In family and social arrangements let others say what they need to say before you give an opinion. If your words can be misconstrued, think of how to put your views across more clearly.

Pisces (Feb 20th-March 20th) Create a sense of buoyancy by emphasising the positive and eliminating the negative. If your first attempt at something new doesn't succeed, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again. Be inspired by a challenge rather than letting it put you off.

Cancer (June 22nd-July 23rd) A competition is by no means over so don't feel anxious if today's efforts don't come up to scratch. You're doing a lot better than a competitor so there are reasons to be cheerful. Challenging conditions will get the adrenalin flowing and makes you feel alive.

Sagittarius (Nov 23rd-Dec 22nd) Chatting with friends and colleagues will be more than just a pleasurable way of spending time. Conversations shared could be incredibly enlightening. People around you know what they're talking about and very soon you will feel considerably better informed about a recent matter that's caused you a lot of confusion.

Aries (March 21st-April 20th) You need to make a quick judgement call; having to make tough decisions will be stressful. There is no relying on outside support when circumstances call for an immediate response; you're going to have to do this alone. Past training may have taught you a lot of things but there is no better learning than being in the thick of it all.

Leo (July 24th-August 23rd) An obligation to a youngster or relative may force you to have to rearrange some plans at the last minute. Extra expenses related to these circumstances aren't going to please you. You'd like to help as much as you can but there are ways to lighten your financial burdens. Insist that wherever and whenever possible expenses are shared out equally.

Capricorn (Dec 23rd-Jan 20th) The more assertive you are, the easier it will be to live life on your own terms. Taking on new responsibilities will give you the chance to put some distance between you and situations causing you upset or disappointment.

Taurus (April 21st-May 21st) A happy blend of romance and creativity will make this a day to remember forever. A lucky break will enhance your innate talents and encourage you to indulge your creative notions. You're being encouraged to exploit your full potential. Valuable agreements can be reached in existing unions.

Virgo (Aug 24th-Sep 23rd) You continue to make significant headway with a personal or promotional project and the end is now in sight. You're reaching the beginning of the end of what has been a progressive few weeks. You've accomplished a lot and learned a lot about yourself in the process.

Motoring

B

ack seat bullies

We all know that most men think they make better drivers than women and it is true there is one element of driving men certainly do better at and that's backseat bullying. If they're not burping, passing wind or telling the driver what gear they should be in, they're fiddling with the radio and dictating the route. For some reason men seem incapable of sitting back, relaxing and letting someone else drive, according to a poll by car insurance retailer Swinton. Instead, they insist on telling women how to drive and criticising their motoring abilities. It is hardly surprising then, that 69 per cent of all drivers (male and female) say men are the worst backseat bullies. Among the most annoying habits of these controlling passengers, is breaking wind, burping, and fiddling with the volume controls on the car radio, according to the survey. And if this isn't bad enough to ruin the concentration of any driver, the poll suggests that male passengers adopt a raft of pester tactics to bully the driver to compensate for the fact that they have been removed from the dominant role of controlling a car. It seems that rendered powerless by not actually being able to sit in the driving seat, male passengers appear to do everything possible to interfere with the driver's confidence.

25

From telling them they are going the wrong way to poking fun at their steering, speed and music choice. Sound familiar? Well you are not alone as 69 per cent of the 2,000 motorists surveyed said men are worse passengers than women while 68 per cent said given the choice they preferred to travel with women passengers rather than men on long journeys. Even men think that other men make bad passengers as 43 per cent say that male passengers always advise the driver to use a different route or road. An annoying 33 per cent want to change the music, a further 84 per cent cannot resist fiddling with the air conditioning and an infuriating 46 per cent are unable to resist commenting on the speed of the car. Conversely, it seems that women make much more laid back passengers as only 20 per cent of women drivers said their female passengers offer advice on which route or road to take. Furthermore, only five per cent insist on changing the driver's choice of music, and just eight per cent of women passengers feel the need to fiddle with the climate controls. Not surprisingly, 68 per cent of male and female drivers said they would rather have a woman passenger than a man. On a more serious note, the insurance retailer is flagging up the dangers of these dreadful driving companions by warning motorists that arguing with the driver could lead to points on their driving licence or, even worse, cause an accident. The Highway Code states that you must not drive without due care and attention and that you must avoid distractions such as arguing with passengers. Failure to do this could result in a ÂŁ5,000 fine and up to nine penalty points. Head of insurer development at Swinton, Chris Collings, says: "Annoying passengers can be a real distraction and can cause drivers to lose concentration. Driving is difficult enough, especially in heavy traffic, without having an irritating backseat driver in tow."

These are exciting times for the Newport Gwent Dragons. After years of anticipation the redevelopment is under way. The current phase is on schedule with the new Bisley stand to be completed in time for the start of the 2011/12 season. The new season is set to bring many interesting changes to Rodney Parade and to the Dragons. Purely on the redevelopment front there is the Bisley stand replacing the Argus Terrace. With the relocated hospitality boxes and business and premium clubs the Dragons hope to offer a better match-day experience to nearly three thousand spectators. Existing parts of the ground are also benefiting from the update. The Hazell stand is being modernised with improved bars and modern facilities being added. Chief Executive Mike Jenkins has great expectations of what the redevelopment will mean to the Dragons players and supporters. "I've spoken to some of the player's, in particular some of the senior players that have been here a long time and have been promised many things. There is a palpable sense that this is a region that's moving places. A lot of those players, and those just coming in, have really been sold on the basis of the new facilities and they can see that we're a region that's on the up. We have to convert on the pitch - people aren't going to use the facility if they don't enjoy what they see on the pitch. We managed to do that last season. Obviously what we're looking for is to do it consistently over the whole of the season and if we do that then people will flock here."

The Dragons' 2010/11 season ended with a sign of what all these improvements could bring to the pitch and to the actual game. In the Magners League the team enjoyed an almost unbeaten home streak at Rodney Parade. Victories were won over old rivals the Cardiff Blues as well as the other Welsh regions and heavy-weight sides such as Munster. Despite some losses the Men of Gwent still managed to rank as seventh overall in the Magners with hopes that can improve on that next season. A better season seems likely with the Dragons squad full of players giving them a depth of performance that the club could be said to have been missing these past years. Exciting young players include Toby Faletau and Dan Lydiate who are amongst the five Dragons that have been called up to this year's World Cup squad. Faletau missed out on the Six Nations with an ankle injury but his performance last season earned him several young player awards from the Welsh Rugby Players' Association, the Welsh Rugby Writers Association and the Magners League. Lydiate has left his potentially career-ending injury far behind to become a regular addition to the national squad. Although it will be tough for the team to miss these crucial players, it has been shown time and time again that there is a wealth of talent in the region waiting to step up and seize the opportunity. As the Magners League becomes the RaboDirect Pro 12, so the Dragons are moving onto an exciting new era with hopefully many successes to come.
