WELCOME TO NOTTINGHAM While I’m not a native of the city, Nottingham has become the place I call home – and I love it. It’s exciting and busy enough to create a buzz, without being over-crowded. The food, drink, entertainment and cultural offerings are varied and totally unique, without making the city over-commercialised. The people, meanwhile, are friendly, sociable, proud of their city and offer visitors the warmest of welcomes. At Trent Bridge in 2019, we are getting ready to welcome the world. During the months of May and June, we’ll be hosting five matches in cricket’s flagship global tournament, the ICC Cricket World Cup, as well as an additional Royal London One-Day International between England and Pakistan. It means we’ll be opening our doors – and the gates to the city of Nottingham - to tens of thousands of people. Those visitors will not only travel from around the UK , but with our matches featuring India, Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan and the West Indies, people will be visiting from all different corners of the globe. Our focus, as ever, will be to give them a wonderful experience – and that is shaped long before and after they arrive at Trent Bridge. That’s why I’m so pleased that our venue is situated in Nottingham. We truly are a city of sport, but one with so much more to offer. If like me you love your history and heritage, there is a great selection of museums and historic buildings to explore. From the fantastic National Justice Museum in the thriving Lace Market to the spectacular Wollaton Hall and Deer Park, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Take a stroll through the green open spaces that surround us, like the Arboretum on the outskirts of the city (said to be the inspiration behind J.M Barrie’s Peter Pan), or while away an afternoon in one of the many splendid galleries, such as Nottingham Contemporary or New Art Exchange. I genuinely love my food too and Nottingham’s restaurant scene certainly sets us apart from other cities. For Sat Bains to currently be ranked by TripAdvisor as the best fine dining restaurant in the UK – and the fourth best in the world – is outstanding. It would definitely be high on my list of places to visit in the city. So, whether you choose music or theatre, a sightseeing trip to a listed building or an evening amongst the restaurants and bars, I urge you to come earlier, stay later and spend your time enjoying what our city has to offer.

HISTORIC DINING IN A MODERN CITY It isn’t unusual to feel immersed in history when dining in Nottingham. From medieval caves to pioneering chemist shops, some of the most unique city restaurants are located in historic buildings. Packed with character to make your dining experience all the more memorable, here are some of the city’s most unique places to eat. CURIOUS TAVERN Situated under the city’s oldest hotel, The Curious Tavern boasts a dark glamour and thrilling past, with historical links to Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Taylor, and the world’s first football league club. Enjoy a range of high-quality British pub food, or descend deeper into the labyrinthine lower floors for cocktails, caves and creative decor.

WORLD SERVICE Housed in the elegant surroundings of a Grade II listed Georgian town house, which was once occupied by the captured Marshal Tallard, commander of the French Army at the Battle of Blenheim (who, oddly enough, is credited with introducing celery to Britain), this quirky heritage is fitting for Michelin Guidelisted World Service. Its eclectic blend of modern British cuisine with inspired world influences makes World Service a must-visit.

ALCHEMILLA The brainchild of Alex Bond, previously of Michelin-starred Sat Bains, creative eatery Alchemilla offers tasting menus bursting with innovation in characterful surroundings. Situated in a former coaching house once owned by a lace merchant, the property had lain disused for 176 years until its transformation into a modern fine dining restaurant in 2017.

YE OLDE TRIP TO JERUSALEM Nestled into the rock on which Nottingham Castle stands is Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, said to be England’s oldest inn. With characterful cave bars and an array of local historical images, curiosities and antiques dotted around, the pub has for many centuries been a legendary spot to enjoy delicious classic pub grub and carefully picked local ales.

THE LARDER ON GOOSEGATE

HAND AND HEART

The airy art nouveau windows of The Larder on Goosegate were built to invite intrigue. As the original Boots the Chemist shop, from 1849 onlookers could see medical potions being whipped up by the innovative chemists inside. Today, sit and watch the world go by from these very windows, enjoying modern British European cuisine, topped with lashings of elegance.

Another pub famous for its caves is Derby Road’s Hand and Heart. Comfy armchairs, an elegant terrace overlooking the street, and charming William Morris wallpaper give charm to the bar, but the real treat is the cosy restaurant. The sandstone walls decorated with twinkling lights give a truly romantic atmosphere and utterly unique dining experience.

CASTLES, CAVES & CONTEMPORARY ART Having closed its doors in 2018 for a fantastic £29m Heritage Lottery Fund redevelopment, there’s lots to look forward to when Nottingham Castle reopens in 2020. Planned improvements include a brilliant new visitor centre, a Robin Hood Gallery, an adventure playground, land train, more cave tours, and fascinating exhibitions detailing Nottingham’s thrilling history. For those wanting to discover the legend of Robin Hood, take in breathtaking views and parkland, descend into the city’s caves or check out some stunning art, there’s still plenty of places in Nottinghamshire to get your fix of what Nottingham Castle offers.

Here’s our definitive bucket list of what to do in Nottinghamshire while the Castle is closed. Driving through the north of the county, Bolsover Castle is easily visible high on the horizon. This striking Stuart mansion features sweeping views, a romantic ruined terrace range, a variety of historical events, and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. For a more romantic setting, head to the divine Belvoir Castle, situated south of Nottinghamshire. Built in 1800, the exquisite interiors will set your imagination alight, while the manicured gardens make for the perfect walk in all seasons.

Nottingham is undoubtedly famous throughout the world as the home of Robin Hood. Despite the hundreds of years that have passed, Sherwood Forest remains a glorious landscape to discover the legendary tale. Visit the brand-new visitor centre at Sherwood Forest Country Park to soak in the beauty of its ancient trees, or check out the Robin Hood Festival, a celebration taking place 5 – 11 August featuring costumed characters, performances, activities, and medieval crafts. To discover more Robin Hood related attractions, turn to pages 10 and 11.

Beneath Nottingham’s streets lie a labyrinth of over 800 caves, carved by residents throughout the Middle Ages out of the soft sandstone rock and used as homes, dungeons, ale cellars and much more. For Nottingham’s prime cave experience, visit the City of Caves, which chronicles the history of the city’s curious underground world. You can also check out the city’s annual cave festival Cave City: a weekend featuring various events in caves previously closed to the public, this year taking place 5 – 7 April.

For long afternoons of picnicking and a break from the city’s hustle and bustle, the Arboretum is the place to go. A short walk or tram ride from the city centre, this local treasure boasts gorgeous greenery, charming hills and a small lake. It is even said to have been the inspiration for J.M. Barrie’s Neverland in Peter Pan! Just a few miles out of the city, another local favourite is the marvellous Wollaton Hall & Park. Not only home to the city’s Natural History Museum, this 500-year-old hall was the setting for Wayne Manor in the 2012 Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. Summer at Wollaton Hall sees music and food festivals, plus outdoor theatre and cinema, while the winter is perfect for atmospheric walks around the tranquil lake and through 500 acres of spectacular parkland.

A diverse mix of international exhibitions and free entry makes Nottingham Contemporary the city’s number one destination for art lovers, and 2019 is the perfect time to visit as it marks the gallery’s 10th birthday. The RIBA award-winning building is bright and airy, with a popular cafébar hosting an eclectic mix of creative events, regular live music, cinema nights and workshops. Established to house a collection of works by 20th century artist Marie-Louise Roosevelt of the prominent Pierrepont family, Thoresby Gallery has evolved into an artistic hub with an eclectic calendar of exhibitions, from rotating exhibits of the Pierrepont collection, to their ever-popular Open Exhibition, showcasing local artists each September. Situated in the extensive grounds of Thoresby Estate, with over 1,000 acres of scenic countryside, there’s a range of facilities and attractions open to the public all year round.

The quirky Bell Inn has stood by Old Market Square since 1437, but its rich history stretches back much further, and beneath its charming interiors it expands deep into the depths beneath the city. This labyrinth of natural and hand carved caves date to the 12th century and are a vestige of the Carmelite monks who once inhabited the site, including two 53ft deep wells, which provided water for their holy homebrew. Stop by for pint or a delicious dinner in their historic halls. A more grisly side to Nottingham’s history can be found at the National Justice Museum. Situated in an 800-year-old gaol and courtroom, you can explore exhibitions on the history of crime and punishment through the centuries, be put on trial in the grand courtroom, or descend into the dark cave cells beneath.

AN OUTLAW ITINERARY EXPLORING ROBIN HOOD COUNTRY Outlaw, visionary and bane of the establishment, everyone knows the tale of Nottingham’s hero Robin Hood, who stole from the rich to give to the poor. With the majestic Sherwood Forest on our doorstep, and a rich history of rebellion to explore in the city, there’s no better place to learn more about the man and legend with our Robin Hood itinerary. Day One | Afternoon Feeling peckish after all that outlaw exploration? Drive to the delightful Ollerton Watermill and Teashop nearby - dating back to 1713 and the only working watermill in Nottinghamshire! Enjoy fresh salads, hearty sandwiches or mouth-watering slabs of cake while taking in lovely views of the river.

Day One | Morning Start your day with a delicious breakfast baguette in the café at the new state-of-the-art Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre. There’s lots to see and learn at the visitor centre, from the wonderful wildlife that makes its home in Sherwood Forest, to the legend of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. There’s also a fantastic shop and a brand-new play area where mini Maid Marians and Little Johns can let off steam. Now head into the heart of Sherwood Forest, home to the famous outlaw himself. Go it alone and discover the wonders of the forest yourself, or grab a trail guide from the visitor centre for inspiration. There’s a variety of trails, providing information about the ancient forest, including one for those on the hunt for Robin Hood and the famous, timeworn beauty, the Major Oak – Robin Hood’s hiding place from the Sheriff of Nottingham! However you choose to explore, there’s lots to find in this magnificent forest.

ENTER A WORLDFA M O U S F O R E S T A new visitor centre has opened at Sherwood Forest, managed by the RSPB and partners on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, heralding a new era for the forest and its very special collection of ancient oak trees, wildlife and legends. Gemma Howarth, senior site manager, explains what makes the place so magical and why it attracts more than 350,000 visitors annually. “Sherwood is known the world over – it’s the home of Robin Hood, and is truly iconic.

Of course, Robin isn’t the whole story. No trip’s complete without seeing the Major Oak. At around 1,000 years old, with a canopy stretching 100ft, it’s the most amazing tree! We’re proud to have the finest collection of ancient oaks in Western Europe – many over 600-years-old. They’re special not just because they look phenomenal, but because they’re an ideal habitat for hundreds of species - insects, fungi, birds and mammals.

It’s been hugely exciting to open our new visitor centre, and be part of the future of Sherwood, with the important responsibility of not just keeping those stories alive, but finding new and innovative ways of telling them for a 21st century audience.

People love a good yarn, which is why we’re developing a lot of our interpretation, how we share these stories, around the spoken word. So there’s a host of guided walks and talks and knowledgeable staff and volunteers around the site, but also costumed guides out in the forest during popular periods, who really help bring these legends to life. There are also numerous events themed around the outlaw, including the much-loved Robin Hood Festival which we hold for a week in August every year.

Take our Giants Trail to spot some of the ancients, or pick up a trail guide to find what interests you – or just explore! We have backpacks for youngsters to hire from our visitor centre, which have all you need for a forest adventure. Our café has hot and cold food and drink, whilst our shop stocks everything from toy bows and arrows to souvenirs, t-shirts and books, alongside RSPB products. There’s a great amphitheatre outside - a lovely place to relax and plan your visit, perhaps whilst the children make the most of our Robin Hood-themed play area. We’ve just started our journey at Sherwood, and have great plans for the future, which we want our visitors to feed into too. There’s exciting times ahead!”

The forest is accessible all year round. The visitor centre is open every day except Christmas Day. Parking is £4 or free to RSPB members. There are disabled bays adjacent to the visitor centre, which has accessible toilets and a changing places facility. OFF THE BEATEN TRACK A little venture off the beaten track can lead to unique encounters and rewards, so indulge your curiosity with a trip to Nottingham’s lesser known, but ever-so-intriguing attractions. Too often these hidden gems remain the reserve solely of those in the know, and while you may not have heard of them before, we’re certain that once you visit, you’ll be glad you did. Tucked away down an unassuming alleyway in the characterful independent district of Hockley, lies an impossibly beautiful, Grade II listed building that houses The Hockley Arts Club - a creative space for social eating and drinking. Elaborately and impeccably decorated, it’s a great spot for delectable cocktails, boozy brunches, an express lunch, intimate dinner, or private party.

In the heart of the city lies a little-known oasis of calm, hidden away from the rush and hustle of Angel Row. Established in 1816, Bromley House Library brims with classic charm, with cosy reading nooks and curious antique features throughout, including a gorgeous original spiral staircase straight out of a storybook. Outside, the tranquil and secluded walled garden is the perfect place for quiet reflection or to soak up some inspiration. Discover the delights of this hidden gem on one of their regular tours, Wednesdays at 2.30pm, or seek out their programme of thought-provoking talks and inspired events.

Nottingham’s curious cave network may be relatively well-known, but the latest addition to the escape room scene, Cave Escape, utilises our subterranean sandstone labyrinth with unique charm. Descend below ground for a truly immersive, atmospheric escapology experience full of riveting twists and turns, cryptic tasks, conundrums, and puzzles. The first room takes visitors on a lavishly gothic quest themed on Bram Stocker’s chilling classic Dracula, with more impressively designed rooms coming soon.

Located in the scenic Nottinghamshire countryside lies a stunning feat of Victorian architecture and engineering - Papplewick Pumping Station, which is the most spectacularly preserved water works in Britain. Built in the late 19th century, ornate and elaborately decorated structures of polished mahogany and brass shine with light that streams through stained glass. Regular steam days and special events give visitors the opportunity to see the imposing boilers and impressive pumping engines at work, and to take a tour of the underground reservoir.

Follow in the footsteps of Ice Age man to explore the majestic landscapes of Creswell Crags and discover a world shaped by nature and carved by our ancestors. Hidden away in a picturesque limestone gorge, honeycombed with caves, lies Britain’s only known Ice Age rock art. Wander round the central lake to admire the abundant flora and fauna or be amazed by the curious discoveries that helped us understand times past on a cave tour.

Nestled nearby you’ll find the grand Welbeck Estate, a treasure trove of brilliant attractions, and amongst the most intriguing of Nottinghamshire’s traditional landed estates. Listed in the Domesday Book, the Abbey has been home to the Dukes of Portland since 1607, including the eccentric ‘burrowing Duke’ who commissioned a maze of underground tunnels, along with a Gas Works to light his excavations. The building now houses the award-winning Harley Gallery – which this year celebrates 25 years of delivering engaging and intriguing exhibitions by leading artists – hosting contemporary exhibitions by leading visual artists, and the Portland Collection, showcasing the art and other treasures collected by the Dukes over 400 years. With a wonderful farm shop specialising in locally sourced produce, and the School of Artisan Food offering creative cooking courses, Welbeck Estate is a must-visit for lovers of art and foodies alike.

Trent Bridge has become the venue that batsmen dream of and bowlers dread - and it would be wise to write any further world records in pencil from now on. Practically every recent visit from the England ODI side has rewritten the rules of what’s possible on the cricket pitch, amid a flood of runs and tumbling records. The world’s third oldest Test cricket ground has seen it all over the years, and while there are too many memorable moments to mention from the longer form of the game - who could forget Ricky Ponting’s choice words to the England balcony as he departed during the legendary 2005 Ashes series, or hometown-hero Stuart Broad’s 8-15 obliteration of the Australians in 2015 - Trent Bridge has now firmly established itself as the global home of thrilling One Day International Cricket. The chaos began in earnest in 2016, when England’s new breed of brutal batsmen put Pakistan to the sword, hammering their way to a World Record score of 444-3, and striking fear into the hearts of anyone with windows living near Trent Bridge. Notts’ own Alex Hales was at the forefront of the madness, bludgeoning his way to a personal score of 171 - the highest ever ODI score registered by an English batsman.

Just two years later they were back, and at it again. This time it was the Australians who could only look on helplessly as a familiar face - in the form of Alex Hales - crunched 147 runs from just 92 balls. In the process, he helped to power England to 4816, comfortably eclipsing the previous world record they had set on their last visit. The 242-run win was England’s best ever victory against Australia, and saw Joss Buttler clatter the fastest ODI century ever scored by an English batsman, speeding to 116 from just 46 balls. Nottingham has become such a thrill-fest that - according to Wisden - the second, third and fourth highest ODI match aggregates ever recorded in England have now been set here. It’s not just international cricket where there have been plenty of fireworks, either. A single week of 2016 saw four of the top 100 highest team totals ever recorded in worldwide List A cricket achieved on the banks of the River Trent. The Notts Outlaws have also made hay in recent years, piling up the silverware in a golden 2017, during which they triumphed in both the T20 Blast and the Royal London Cup competitions. Whether it’s the shape of the ground, the atmospheric conditions, or the pristine pitch that makes batting a joy - there is also definitely a sprinkling of sporting magic in the air around these parts. Nottingham Forest’s City Ground stands just behind the Radcliffe Road End, and is, of course, home to one of sport’s greatest fairy tales - Nottingham Forest’s unbelievable European Cup triumphs in 1979 and 1980. Notts County’s Meadow Lane –

just across the river - has plenty of its own folklore too, as the home of the world’s oldest professional league club. Whether you’re a cricket fan or not, the chance to see big hitters from the West Indies, Pakistan, Australia, India, New Zealand and Bangladesh unleashing their most audacious attacking strokes in Nottingham is one not to be missed. All eyes will be on the hosts - and arguably favourites, England, when they take on much-fancied Pakistan on 3 June, for what promises to be one of the fieriest games of a mouth-watering tournament of top-quality cricket.

We can’t wait! D I D YO U K N O W ? You can see some of England’s biggest hitters and soak up Trent Bridge’s unique atmosphere during this summer’s T20 Blast competition. See whatsonnottingham.com for more details.

The last thing you should have to worry about when choosing your holiday destination is whether the hotels and attractions are accessible. Holidays should be a pleasurable experience for all, including those with access needs. Whether this be disabled people, those with hearing and visual impairments, wheelchair users, the elderly and less mobile or people with pushchairs. Visit Nottinghamshire is working closely with tourism partners, including the national tourist board VisitEngland, to improve the travel information we provide for visitors with access needs. The Understanding the Visit Nottinghamshire Directory section of the guide on page 23 indicates symbol keys relating to accessibility and will assist you when looking through the directory listings through the guide. These symbols are presented within directory listings when we have received confirmation from the individual venue. If they are not noted, it doesn’t suggest they are not available – please check with the individual venue for confirmation.
