GETTING READY FOR THE TRIP

GETTING READY FOR YOUR TRIP! We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the difference between an amazing off roading experience and one that could potentially prove disappointing (or worse) lies in the planning. Read on for our top tips and suggestions for ensuring you’re well prepared.

"

THE JOURNEY MATTERS MORE THAN THE DESTINATION - Oliver Goldsmith

• Pack plenty of drinking water (much more than you think you’ll need)

VEHICLE CHECKS It goes without saying that you’ll need a 4x4 to head into desert and that the vehicle should be given a comprehensive once-over well in advance of setting out. At a minimum that means inspecting the condition of the tyres (spare included) and checking that they’re properly inflated as both over and under inflation could spell disaster out on the sand. Next up, make sure fluid levels are at optimum: check the oil, brake, transmission and radiator fluids, as well as the air conditioning coolant. Do also test your headlights and battery and while it might sound obvious a full tank of petrol, and a jerry can in reserve, is of course a must.

USEFUL TOOLS AND GEAR FOR THE ROAD: AN ESSENTIAL CHECKLIST Run through this list a couple of times before you leave and you might just thank us later.

• Take a vehicle recovery kit. According to the experts at the very least this should include a decent shovel, heavy duty tow rope, spare tire, traction mat and jump leads. • Make sure your mobile phone is charged and that you pack an in-car charger. • It might sound old school, but you never know when technology might fail you. Take printed maps and a compass just in case. • Check your car insurance and coverage and make sure you have all relevant documents with you. • The same goes for roadside recovery details (not necessarily the same contact information as your car insurance). • Pack your driver’s license and vehicle registration information as well. • Let a couple of friends know your plans in case you run into trouble. Give them a rough itinerary, highlight where you’re likely to be at certain points during the trip and when you expect to return. • Check the weather forecast both in advance of the trip and during it and be prepared to act accordingly. Off-roading or attempting to set up a tent in the middle of a sandstorm is not fun.

CLOTHING There’s a fine line between travelling light and feeling underprepared. The items that follow all fall into our must-pack list and should be considered additions to the obvious (underwear, pajamas and the like). • Sunglasses, sunhats and plenty of sunscreen. • Lightweight, casual clothes that you don’t mind getting dusty and dirty and offer protection from the sun. • Trainers or covered shoes (while flip flops might seem like a good footwear choice, in the heat of the day the sand gets screaming hot so trainers are often a better option). • Jumpers, warm socks and a wooly blanket or two for cosying up under the stars – the temperature drops rapidly at night in the desert.

CAMPING KIT At a minimum we’d advise that you load up your car with the following: • A tent (or tents) spacious enough to accommodate everyone on the trip, as well as a large, heavy-duty ground mat.

4

• A decent mallet, extra rope and sand pegs are all essential (the sand is likely to be both fine and soft, meaning regular pegs are unlikely to hold your tent in place). • Sleeping bags, blow-up mattresses and/or camp beds, or at the very least, padded floor mats. • Some form of self-created shade such as a gazebo or large umbrella. A windbreak is also a good idea. • While the thought of foraging for firewood might seem romantic, in reality dry wood is often difficult to come across. Preempt disaster by bringing firewood, kindling, matches, lighters and fire starters with you. • Solar powered flashlights are your friend and headlamp flashlights come into their own in the dead of the desert night. Do pack extra batteries. • Arrive on site with plenty of bags for disposing of rubbish and recycling and live by the mantra that you’ll leave the area as you found it (or in even better condition). For more information on doing so, click here. • A fully stocked medical kit is a must and so too is that includes insect repellent, antihistamine and mosquito coils, • Take tissues, wet wipes, toilet and kitchen roll (to be disposed of sustainably upon your return to civilisation). • Have a plan for a make-shift toilet.

WHERE TO BUY YOUR CAMPING GEAR From the very basics to the items that will give your trip a luxurious home-from-home feel, there are plenty of options for purchasing camping gear in the UAE. For those new to camping or unsure if they want to fully commit to the pursuit, Carrefour, Union Coop and LuLu Hypermarket all sell reasonably priced camping essentials. For more specialist requirements and well-known brands both Ace Hardware (located in Dalma Mall in Musaffah, 800 275 223) and Adventure HQ (located in Dalma Mall in Musaffah, 800 23847) are reliably good with plenty of choice online and in store.

EMERGENCY CONTACT NUMBERS AND USEFUL INFORMATION Emergency contact numbers: • UAE Police: 999 • UAE Ambulance: 998 • UAE Fire Department (Civil Defense): 997

As a rule of thumb, if you meet oncoming traffic on a narrow, steep or particularly perilous stretch then the vehicle travelling uphill has the right of way (based on the idea that it’s easier for the downhill driver to reverse back up the slope). • Allow yourself plenty of time to reach your final destination, whether that means your camp for the night or a return to proper roads. Avoid driving in the dark whenever possible.

Useful information: • For reporting minor accidents in Abu Dhabi; 800 SAAED (800 72233). • For getting out of a tricky situation: ABCT Towing Transport. This company’s ‘Desert Pull Out Service’ is specifically designed to help those with vehicles stuck in the sand and they claim they’ll do so 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Jot down their number (0508066285) – it could come in very handy indeed. • For keeping up to date with the weather: @officialuaeweather

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS • When selecting your camping spot, opt for a flat surface. Not only will this make setting upeasier and your night’s sleep smoother, but also from a safety perspective it means that you’ll be clearly visible to oncoming vehicles. • Check the wind direction and set your fire up far enough away from the tents to avoid smoking them out. • Be vigilant about maintaining your campfire, particularly if it’s windy.

OFF ROADING RULES Do bear in mind that when the road disappears, it doesn’t mean that the driving rule book should go the same way. Following the practices and protocols outlined below is important for ensuring your safety, the safety of those around you and for protecting the environment. • Don’t venture into the desert alone. A convoy of at least three cars is advisable, with the most experienced driver leading the pack along a pre-agreed route that’s suitable for all. • Keep a good distance between the cars and if one vehicle lags behind, allow it to catch up before continuing. The rules of moving in convoy decree that each driver is responsible for the driver behind and that the speed is determined by the slowest car. • If you can see a pre-existing trail in the sand, stick to it. Not only does this suggest a certain degree of safety in the route, but forging a new path will have an unnecessary and potentially lasting impact on the environment and wildlife. • It might be rarity but when you do come across another vehicle, use common sense. Slow your speed, assess the situation and act accordingly.

• Never leave a lit fire unattended and make sure the flames are completely extinguished before you leave the site. • Celebrate being close to the desert wildlife, but don’t let your guard down entirely. That means treading carefully, avoiding poking around in holes and keeping your shoes on (to avoid stepping on sharp objects and insects). When you put your shoes back on in the morning give them a thorough shake and do a scorpion check. • Once darkness falls insist the groups sticks together and don’t let anyone venture out alone.

CAMPING WITH KIDS As with almost any outdoor or slightly extreme activity things do become that bit more complicated once the kids get involved, particularly if they’re relatively young. This shouldn’t put you off though, there is serious fun to be had and memoires to be made when camping en famille. The following tips should help ensure the experience is a smooth(ish) one. • Pack lots of snacks. And we mean lots. Use them to distract, entertain, pacify 5

and please – you’re a parent, you know the drill. • Practice pitching your tent in advance and get the kids familiar with the idea that this will be home for the night. • For your first trip out pick an easy-tofind location that doesn’t demand hours of driving and result in bored, crabby children. Sticking close to home also means that if things really don’t go to plan, you can make a swift exit. • Don’t underestimate the number of changes of clothes the kids might need: car sickness, desert dust, an ill-timed spillage (or three), it all adds up. • In an attempt to avoid sand getting everywhere set up a ‘no-play’ zone around the food prep area and close to the tent entrances. That way at least you stand a small chance of enjoying a grit-free meal and bed. • Putting a heavy-duty mat outside the entrance to the tents and insisting that everyone shakes of excess sand before stepping inside should help too. • Nevertheless, sand will fly. And it will get everywhere. As every seasoned beachgoer knows talcum powder is brilliant for removing sand from sweaty or wet bodies and seems to stop the itching too. • That said, sand goggles might just save the day. Children with sand in their eyes can’t be expected to be anything but miserable and while googles might look a little funny, they should prevent this from happening. If it does, individual eye drops are great for washing grit out of weepy little eyes. • Don’t forget to pack toys and games for both day and night: think buckets and spades, a kite, beach ball, old golf set, binoculars, set of cards, music and speakers. • Get the kids excited and involved in the entire experience. From planning the expedition to pitching the tent, preparing the food, spotting stars and toasting marshmallows at twilight this can be a truly wonderful experience for adults and children alike.

APPS TO HELP YOU ON YOUR WAY From star spotting to survival tips as well as music must-haves, these apps are all well worth downloading.

Google Keep A brilliant organisational tool. Given the amount of planning that goes into an off roading trip and the sheer volume of things to remember, an app that helps you to do so is always going to help. While there are plenty out there, Google Keep is reliably good, simple to use and free and will allow you to easily make lists, label notes, sort photos and share information with others. Available on Apple and Android devices. Google Play There are of course numerous apps for creating playlists and you may already have your favourite, but the added bonus of Google Play in this situation is that it works offline so however far off the grid you go, you’ll still be accompanied by your favourite tunes. Playlists will also update instantly across all your devices, with no need to sync. Available on Apple and Android devices. SAS Survival Guide While it might sound a little extreme, this nifty app provides world-class survival skills and tips and is packed with information that might just come in handy if you find yourself in a tight spot. From tackling snake bites to a survival checklist, as well as an inbuilt compass and interactive quiz there’s plenty to get your teeth into. Available on Apple and Android devices. Sky Guide This sleek and easy to navigate app doesn’t require WiFi, cellular data or GPS making it ideal for stargazing in splendid desert isolation. Thanks to AR technology you can just hold your phone up to the sky and easily locate stars, comets, planets, satellites and more. The perfect entry-level app for mapping and enjoying the night sky. Available on Apple and Android devices. Truth or Dare – Kids The classic campfire game has been given a digital update with this app that’s tailored specifically to kids (note - there’s an adult’s version, too). In addition to the vast selection of pre-loaded questions for the truth elements and lighthearted dares (for example ‘Do 30 push-ups), there’s an option for players to add their own additional questions and dares. Fun for all the family. Available on Apple and Android devices.

TRUTH OR DARE TRUTH QUESTIONS: • Who is your favourite family member? • If anyone in your family could win an award for being the most annoying, who would it be? • What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you in front of a crowd? • If you were granted three wishes, what would they be? • If animals could talk, which one would you have a conversation with?

DARE QUESTIONS: • Randomly call a person from your phone and sing them a song. • Call up a pizza place and order Chinese food. • Put as many pieces of marshmallow puffs in your mouth at one time as you can. • Allow a random player to tickle you for 30 seconds. • Take a picture of yourself pulling a funny face and set it as your Snapchat story for the rest of the day and night. • Do as many push-ups as you can in one minute. • Eat a spoonful of a spicy sauce.

Toss popcorn kernels into a heavy-based heatproof pan along with a drizzle of vegetable oil, then cover with foil to create a lid. Place in the campfire embers and cook until the popping stops. Divide the warm popcorn between bowls and add flavourings according to taste– think aged parmesan and za’atar, sea salt and caramel sauce, cinnamon sugar or rainbow sprinkles.

• Heavy-duty foil • Airtight containers for storing food • Heavy-based saucepan and frying pan • Cleaning products and equipment • Favourite condiments • Tea and coffee

spice mixture, then cover once again with the husks.

OFF-ROAD ROUTES

18

OFF-ROAD ROUTES When it comes to planning your foray into (and indeed out of) the desert a bit of forethought is crucial to the success of your trip. In short, this is not the time to sling a few snacks in the passenger seat and strike out across the sand on a whim.

First up, remember that not all routes are created equal. If you’re new to desert driving than do the sensible thing and pick a trek that reflects that. After all, there’s plenty of time for traversing challenging terrain and navigating sheer drops once you’ve got a bit of dune bashing experience under your belt. Consider not just the length of your route but how long it’s likely to take, particularly once you’ve factored in pitstops for rest breaks, refueling (food not petrol) and admiring the numerous beauty spots. Should you be planning on setting up camp for the night have a rough idea of where that might be and work out what time you need to arrive in order to have your tent up, fire roaring and marshmallows in hand ready for toasting well before the sun slips behind the dunes. The suggestions that follow all have our seal of approval and offer fabulous vistas, plenty of interest points and opportunities for flexing your desert driving muscles. Of course, it’s entirely up to you if you plan these trips alone or seek out the help of an expert team to assist (see here for more details).

Al Remah

Best for: From beginners to advanced off-roaders, this route is suitable for all. Duration: 6-8 hours Route length: 67km What to expect: Stunning views, soaring dunes and plenty of wildlife. The Camel Race Track is a must-stop off point

close to the start of this trek and do keep your eyes peeled (driver excluded) for deer roaming freely around Telal Nature Reserve. Whether you choose to set up camp around here or head on a little further in the Sweihan direction, there are plenty of picturesque places to spend a night under the stars. Naqrah Lake and the clusters of desert trees close to Tawi Naqar are another route highlight. Take note: Upon leaving the Camel Race Track make sure you take a left turn off the regular road track (about 300 -500 metres from the track), then select your specific route from there. This is not a circular drive – don’t expect to finish where you started. Route coordinates: here

Al Ain to White Sands

Best for: Whether you’re a desert driving newbie or a dune bashing pro you’ll find lots to get excited about on this winding trail. Duration: 4-8 hours Route length: 157km What to expect: From a traditional Camel Race Track to verdant tree farms and towering dunes, this route is dotted with interest points. It’s also one that’s often used by local Bedouin, meaning there’s already likely to be tracks in place for your car to follow. Should wish to settle for the night Abu Hiraybah is an ideal place to do so, not least because of the nearby nature reserve. Early morning or late in the day you might be lucky enough to spot the race camels training and expect to see gazelles roaming as a matter of course.

Take note: The groundwater table is very close to the surface at several points on this route, so do be wary of natural water pits. Route coordinates: here

The Hameem Loop

Best for: Due to the slightly testing terrain in the latter part of this journey this route is better suited to those who have a desert driving experience. Duration: 4-5 hours Route length 55 – 80 km (depending on the specific route taken) What to expect: A fascinating, somewhat bumpy (in the best way possible) trip. The wild gazelles, goat and camel farms and dedicated wildlife area along the way will keep animal lovers happy. For an encounter of the quirkier kind, look out for the abandoned and rather rusty Nissan Patrol Pickup and a rather desolate disused solar power bank. Take note: The terrain is rugged. Be prepared to traverse slip faces and make your way up (and down) deep bowls. This route can’t be driven in reverse. Route coordinates: here

Umm Al Oush

Best for: Assured desert drivers that feel comfortable navigating steep climbs and the inevitable sharp drops that follow. Duration: 5-4 hours Route length 60km What to expect: An adrenalin fueled few hours; the breathtakingly high dunes on this tough route reach heights touching 250m. The awe-inspiring views reflect that, so camera phones at the ready at all times. Take note: You’ll need to be comfortable executing advanced moves such as side sloping and cresting to drive this route. Again, it can’t be done in reverse. Route coordinates: here

Liwa Crossing

Best for: Skilled off roaders and adventurers with not just desert driving experience but desert camping know-how. Duration: 2 – 1.5 days Route length: 109km What to expect: A testing yet hugely rewarding trip. You’ll scale some of the largest deep red dunes in the emirates on this advanced route and take in an abundance of breathtaking sights, including the luxurious Qasr Al Sarab resort, verdant forests near Al Mirayr and plenty of deer gathering close to Bateen Liwa. A trip to the nearby salt pools is highly recommended and is a great place to tent up for the night. Take note: The length and technical nature of this rugged route mean that careful planning and preparation are key. It is completely remote so you’ll need to take all the essentials with you (and we mean essentials, think petrol, water, food) and keep in mind that an early exit from the sand is not an option. Route coordinates: here

Al Khazna Route

Best for: Those with strong nerves and desert driving prowess – this is an advanced route that requires skill and experience. Duration: 4-3 hours Route length: 45km What to expect: A short, sharp challenging journey that demands complex moves (including side sloping and cresting) and the confidence to traverse highly technical dunes, embark on steep climbs and descend sharp drops. Intrepid drivers and their

co-explorers will reap the benefits of these efforts though. Amongst many fascinating sights, you’re see beautiful desert trees, a natural oasis, camel farm and a collection of abandoned cars. Should you wish to stretch the journey out (and why wouldn’t you, it’s a stunning one) there are excellent camping spots near Al Fayah and also a dedicated Desert Safari Camp.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET STUCK

Route coordinates: here

• Remove as much weight from the car as possible (we’re talking both passengers and kit) and if possible, reduce the tire pressure further to increase traction. In addition, shift the car to 4L (four-wheel drive, low range) for added control.

OFF-ROAD DRIVING TIPS There’s no substitute for careful planning and real time experience. If you’re new to desert driving and feeling apprehensive ahead of the trip a beginner course led by a professional will stand you in good stead. • Once your wheels hit the sand, make sure you stop and let air out of the tyres. By reducing air pressure, you increase the tire footprint, gaining traction and grip. This allows the car to effectively glide over the sand and reduces the chances of getting stuck. It’s important to re-inflate tyres again once you head back onto the road to avoid lasting damage. • Know your gears. When driving at a regular speed over flat desert ground or low dunes you should generally be in 4H (four-wheel drive, high range). Here all four wheels are driving the car and you’re gaining added traction. When you change to 4L (four-wheel drive, low range) your wheels will turn more slowly and you’ll have added control, so make this switch when maximum traction and added power is required – think navigating particularly soft sand and steeper assents and descents.

• Resist the urge to accelerate – spinning the wheels is likely to cause you to sink further into the sand and make the situation worse. Instead, stop, get out the car, assess the situation and make a plan.

• If you’re still not moving, dig out some of the sand that’s blocking your tyres with a shovel (try to keep going until you can see the base of the wheel). In addition, clear as much sand away from the underbelly of the vehicle as you can and use it to make a hardpacked trench in the direction you intend to drive. • Now is the time to utilize your traction mats – lay them down behind the back tyres and drive out slowly, trying not to hit the accelerator or brakes aggressively. • Should this prove unsuccessful, it’s time to get out the tow rope and task one of your convoy with pulling you out. Before you do so, make sure they are in a safe position and don’t risk getting stuck as well. • If all else fails, call in the professionals.

• Practice good driving habits. Remain alert at all times, drive slowly and steadily and keep a safe distance between vehicles if you’re travelling in convoy. • Task one of your passengers with checking the route ahead. • Don’t forget the basics: always drive straight down a slope rather than at an angle and resist the urge to use your brakes or coast downwards in neutral - a low gear is always preferable. • When it comes to heading upwards, remember that the steeper the slope the greater momentum you’ll need to up build in advance (without risking losing control, of course).

RESPECTING AND PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT

It’s a simple mantra, but an effective one:

strive to leave these areas of natural beauty as you found them. At the very least that means acting responsibly, disposing of waste properly and taking steps to to minimise the impact of camp set ups. If a trail or camp site already exists, do use it instead of creating your own. Show respect for all surrounding wildlife (no matter how big or small) and recognise your position as a visitor to their habit. And while we did say leave the area as you found it, you can take one step further: should you happen upon litter left by a less considerate off-roader, make a positive impact and dispose of it.

HIDDEN GEMS

22

HIDDEN GEMS Staggering natural wonders, opportunities for exercising in the open air, impressive wildlife encounters and more; these lesser-known spots deserve to be on everyone’s must-visit list.

AL WATHBA Head out from the capital and drive for around 40-minutes along the Abu Dhabi – Al Ain road and you’ll soon happen upon the Al Wathba region. Once a small village enclosed by the desert, the area now boasts a wealth of attractions that will appeal to all, from young families to nature lovers and adventure seekers.

23

AL WATHBA FOSSIL DUNES With their prehistoric, almost otherworldly feel the stunning structures that make up the Al Wathba Fossil Dunes really are something to behold. Formed thanks to a unique mix of wind, sand and time (in short, strong desert winds whip the sand into weird and wonderful shapes which harden over the years), the dunes are an awe-inspiring sight. Not only do they offer great photo opportunities, this is a stellar spot to set up camp for the night. Do treat this beauty spot with the respect that it deserves. Explore by all means but resist the urge to climb up or clamber over the dunes as they’re far more fragile than they look. Location: Head for the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve and follow these co-ordinates from there. Note: As this is now a protected area, visitation may be restricted. Check the latest guidance before visiting.

AL WATHBA CYCLE TRACK As far as cycling experiences go it doesn’t get much more scenic than this. Flanked by miles of desert on either side this well-maintained cycle track has options for all, from a low impact, relatively flat eight-kilometre loop to a rather more intense but seriously rewarding 30km trail through cascading dunes. For a seriously special ride we recommend setting out on the floodlit route at sunset and enjoying the peace and solitude. You can either bring your own bike(s) or hire them from FLS Bikes where prices start at Dhs30 per hour (there’s an option to rent kid’s bikes and trollies too). Restrooms, changing facilities and lockers are also available on site. Location: Al Wathba Cycle Track is around 40-50-minutes drive from Abu Dhabi, close to the Camel Race Track.

24

AL WATHBA WETLANDS Formerly a salt flat (‘sabkha’), Al Wathba Wetlands were established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1998 and have flourished ever since. Declared a Ramsar site (Wetland of International Importance) in 2013 the wetlands features both natural and man-made lakes, salt flats and sand dunes and team with an array of aquatic, plant and bird life (some 250 different species). Perhaps most impressive of all though is the flamingo population which during migration season runs into the thousands. The two self-guided walking tours (1.5 kilometres and 3 kilometres respectively) within the wetlands are well worth a wander and offer fantastic views, plenty of shade and a bird-hide equipped with binoculars. When you feel like escaping the city and embracing nature in all its glory, there are few better places to do so in the region. Location: Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

SHEIKH ZAYED FESTIVAL One of the largest cultural festivals in the UAE, Sheikh Zayed Festival will return to Al Wathba in winter 2021, coinciding with the 50th UAE National Day. Expect recreational activities for adults and kids, exhibitions showcasing Emirati traditions and creations, bazaars, folk performances, fireworks displays and more. There’s also the opportunity to sample local and international dishes from live cooking stations and food trucks.

JEBEL HAFEET Jebel Hafeet Desert Park Situated at the foot of the towering Jebel Hafeet peak, Jebel Hafeet Desert Park offers something for everyone, whether you’re seeking culture, adventure or simply a little respite from city life. Depending on your persuasion, you can opt to explore the nearby archeological attractions including Jebel Hafeet Tombs (a UNESCO heritage site in its own right), tackle the rather vertiginous main ascent by foot or explore the park and captivating surrounding area on a guided dune buggy, mountain bike, horseback or camel tour. You can also stay overnight in the park – for more information on doing so, this article has all you need to know. Click here for location coordinates. EMIRATES NATIONAL AUTO MUSEUM Take note motor enthusiasts: the distinctive looking, pyramid shaped building that you’ll see when driving along the Abu Dhabi-Liwa road is the Emirates National Auto Museum. Home to Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan’s personal collection, it houses over 200 vehicles, including customised one-off cars, classic all-American cruisers, restored military vehicles and what’s believed to be the world’s largest truck. The Emirates National Auto Museum is located on the Abu Dhabi-Liwa road and is open daily from 9am-6pm. Entry is priced at Dhs50 for adults, Dhs10 for kids. AL SADEEM OBSERVATORY Located in the heart of the rural Al Wathba desert, the UAE’s first space observatory opened in 2016 and has been popular ever since. A must-visit for both avid astronomers and casual sky gazers, a trip here offers a wonderful opportunity for learning more about astronomy, experiencing the night sky at its very finest, attending subject specific lectures, using highly advanced telescopes and exploring the on-site inflatable portable planetarium (a highlight for kids, as you can imagine). Al Sadeem Astronomy and Observatory is located here and is open to the public from Monday -Saturday. Pre-booking is very much encouraged, visit their website for more information and to do so.

AL QUAA Also known as the UAE’s “Milky Way spot”, Al Quaa is one of the darkest spots in the country, which makes it perfectly for revealing what’s really going on in the night sky. Roughly a 90-minute drive from Abu Dhabi city towards Al Ain, you’ll find this desert star-gazing spot located at 23.604633, 54.750256 – keep your eyes peeled for large roundabout, which your destination is directly behind, along a dirt road. Make sure you’ve downloaded a stargazing app (Skyview Lite is a popular pick), and keep your eyes peeled for shooting stars.
