SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS
Anne Arundel County and the State of Maryland are committed to environmental preservation through a range of initiatives aimed at safeguarding water quality, mitigating pollution, and conserving the Chesapeake Bay. These initiatives encompass stormwater management, reduction of nutrient pollution, and promotion of sustainable land use practices. Notably, as part of our community’s ongoing effort to combat plastic waste, Styrofoam food and drink containers have been banned in food service establishments since 2020. Starting in 2024, plastic bags will no longer be distributed at grocery stores in Anne Arundel County (Note: at the time of publication, the City of Annapolis had not yet finalized similar legislation). Instead, paper and reusable bags will be available for a nominal fee to encourage sustainability, or you may bring your reusable shopping bag with you to lessen your footprint. When visiting, we encourage you to do your part in reducing single-use plastics and helping maintain the beauty of our region. Please consider recycling and properly disposing of your trash in designated receptacles. Together, we can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
CANNABIS, TOBACCO, AND ALCOHOL REGULATIONS
As of 2023, adults aged 21 and older are allowed to possess specific quantities of cannabis for recreational use, commonly referred to as the “personal use amount.” This includes up to 1.5 ounces of cannabis flower, 12 grams of concentrated cannabis, or a total cannabis product containing no more than 750 mg THC. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the regulations surrounding recreational cannabis use, please consult the Maryland Cannabis Administration’s website. Moreover, it’s important to be aware that regulations for alcohol and tobacco also apply. The purchase of alcoholic beverages and tobacco is restricted to individuals aged 21 or older, and establishments are required to ask for proof of age identification for all purchases. ANNAPOLIS REIMAGINED
Annapolis City Dock
ANNAPOLIS R EIMAGINED BY MAYOR GAVIN BUCKLEY
I
In the 17th-century, Annapolis was known as the “Athens of America.” This small but historic capital seaport was a central entry point for goods and immigrants to the new world (both free and enslaved). Some 300 years later, Annapolis remains a regional hub for connection, government, hospitality, and higher learning. With this amazing history and culture, you may ask, why change it? Currently, our city faces urgent resiliency challenges due to our proximity to the water. With two dozen miles of coastline for a seven-square-mile municipality, we have flooding challenges brought about by both rising sea levels and land subsidence. The historic seaport in downtown Annapolis, known to locals as “City Dock,” is the most vulnerable to these damaging impacts. At City Dock, we aim to preserve and honor our city’s history while resolving urgent resiliency challenges for future generations.
PACKING AN HISTORICAL PUNCH
Annapolis has a history that is proud and sorrowful. Once the site of a thriving shipping industry that brought great wealth to America, Annapolis was also the site for the commercial exchange of human cargo. In 2019, UNESCO named Annapolis as a “Site of Memory” for the Middle Passage slave trade. 8 C h o o s e Yo u r A d v e n t u r e
The European colonial immigrants built mansions in Annapolis where lavish social events, including those attended by the Founding Fathers, took place. Today, Annapolis boasts of having more original 18th-century structures than any other city in the United States. Work has been done to preserve that colonial-era history, to ensure that future generations can have an appreciation for what happened here—the good, the bad, and the brutal.
WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), tidal flooding makes Annapolis one of America’s most vulnerable coastal communities. Back in 1969, downtown Annapolis faced, on average, 3.6 days of flooding per year. This is the kind of flooding that laps at the doors of downtown homes and businesses, disrupts commerce, and degrades infrastructure. By 2013, that number had grown to 38.5 days of yearly flooding. By 2019, it was 52 days a year. If nothing is done to hold back the water, by 2065, downtown Annapolis is expected to see daily flooding, 365 days a year.
An architectural rendering of reimagined City Dock Park with programmable space and a central fountain Courtesy of the City of Annapolis
And we aren’t talking about rainy days and stormwater runoff. Annapolis experiences “sunny day” or “nuisance” flooding where the water is driven up by the Chesapeake Bay tidal surge compounded by a rise in sea level. Over the years, a number of plans have been introduced to combat the flooding. Most plans couldn’t make it through the political gauntlet of local politics. In 2010, the bulkhead surrounding Ego Alley was raised, which stopped the immediate problem of water overtopping the seawall and spilling into the streets. However, it didn’t help the water that came up through the storm drains and flooded Dock Street, City Dock, and Compromise Street. When originally constructed, the storm drains functioned using gravity so water would flow downhill through the stormwater pipe and back out into the Chesapeake Bay. That worked well when water levels were below the outfall. Today, the pipes are a conduit for water that pushes up from the Bay, up through the storm drains, and into city streets. This causes what is known as sunny day flooding, City Dock’s most frequent source of inundation. In addition, the storms are more intense. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel brought upwards of 7 feet of storm surge to City Dock, the highest on record. Of the 44 highest recorded flooding events in Annapolis, only six happened before 1985.
CITY DOCK REIMAGINED
In 2019, the Annapolis City Council convened the City Dock Action Committee, a group of 100 stakeholders, to come up with a working plan to address resiliency in downtown. The group was broken into 10 working groups, each focused on a different aspect of the plan: design and place-making, financial tools, community access, maritime, parking/ pedestrian and bicycle connections, business and property owners, character and livability, resiliency and the historic Burtis House. The committee came up with a plan to reimagine City Dock. They also formulated a unique financing system to
pay for the work—through a Public Private Partnership (P3) which would leverage the value of the city’s municipal parking garage. The program would require a consortium of firms, architects and landscape designers, parking vendors and mobility experts to come together to redevelop Hillman Garage and implement resiliency solutions for f lood mitigation at City Dock. That work would result in a $24 million concession, or down payment, to break ground on the new project. Together, the two projects, City Dock and Hillman Garage (which reopened in June of 2023), will be the largest, most expensive, and most consequential infrastructure projects in the City’s history. First, the plan addresses the resiliency challenges by not only raising City Dock to help it withstand sunny day flooding, but it also involves passive flood barriers to help combat more frequent and intense storm surge. The plan takes what is singular about Annapolis, the waterfront and the history, and places it center stage. No longer is the best view in the city reserved for parked cars, now it will be the best place to enjoy a concert or take in our exceptional waterfront views. The new design includes a park with a central fountain buffered on one side by a waterfront walkway and on the other by a wide promenade. The promenade leads to the new Waterfront Welcome Center that will be headquarters for the City’s Harbormaster and Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Visitors Center. Incorporated into the design will be inclusive storytelling that helps visitors gain a more complete understanding of Annapolis and our nation’s origin story.

Perhaps more distinctive than our iconic State House Dome and intrinsic nautical history are our inspiring traditions, festivals, attractions, and quirks that make visiting Annapolis and Anne Arundel County even more charming and quintessentially unique than you can imagine!
Let’s explor e!

St. John’s College
May Day: Every year on the first of May, our historic downtown is transformed with colorful arrangements of blossoms and blooms. Creatively crafted displays full of fresh-cut flowers are thoughtfully placed in front of businesses and historic homes as part of the annual May Day basket competition. This annual beautification of our city, sponsored by the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne, dates back to 1956. St. John’s College: The third oldest college in the new world, i.e., the United States of America by today’s standards, is only a stone’s throw from the United States Naval Academy. Founded as King William’s School in 1696, only Harvard and William & Mary are older. Discover this school on your visit for engaging architecture, a storied history, and a world-class art museum. Fun Fact: Francis Scott Key, who penned “The Star-Spangled Banner,” is a famous alum. Chick & Ruth’s Delly: This deli is an Annapolis institution that has been serving breakfast favorites, colossal sandwiches, and decadent 1-gallon milkshakes since 1965. Still, their steadfastness to the “Pledge of Allegiance” sets them apart and puts them on our list of unique local traditions. Beginning in 1989, the “Pledge of Allegiance” has been recited daily, Monday through Friday at 8:30 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. without fail. Stop in for breakfast and experience this old-school classic for yourself!

The TUG: A Maritime Republic of Eastport tradition— known locally as The TUG—happens yearly on the first Saturday of November. A rope is run across the Annapolis Harbor between the two towns of Annapolis and Eastport and teams line up on either side to compete for their hometown in an epic tug of war across the water. Locally known as the ‘Slaughter Across the Water,’ this yearly act of war upon Maryland’s State Capital, turns into a great party with bands on both sides of the harbor, food trucks, and a toast to good, clean fun.

U.S. Navy Blue Angels
United States Navy Blue Angels: The Blue Angels roar into the skies overhead every May as a precursor to the USNA Graduation Ceremony, known as Commissioning Week. The air show has a full practice run on the Tuesday of Commissioning Week, and the final performance is on Wednesday, ahead of Friday’s graduation fly-over at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Hop on a charter boat to see the spectacle from the water, view it from the Annapolis Harbor, or head to Hospital Point at the Naval Academy and watch along the shores of the Severn River.
National Cryptologic Museum
National Cryptologic Museum: Our Navy roots might get all the press; still, it may interest you to know that Anne Arundel County is home to the National Security Agency (NSA) and the U.S. Army Base of Fort George G. Meade. Adjacent to NSA is the National Cryptologic Museum, where you can explore ciphers, spy gadgets, and the stories of heroic and historic spy-catching documenting years of the cryptologic profession. Whether you’re planning a private group tour or a visit with family and friends, it’s definitely worth some reconnaissance.

Maritime Republic of Eastport’s (MRE) 0.05K Race: This is not a typo; the race is an arduous and cumbersome 0.05K (that’s just 0.03 miles). Although some of it is slightly uphill, it has been described as “the least challenging athletic event ever conceived” by Runner’s World magazine. The race, prizes, festivities, and fun were the brainchild of the MRE. This local Spa Creek Bridge organization began due to a rift over the demolition of a bridge that connected downtown Annapolis with the Horn Point Peninsula (Eastport). Furry friends are welcome and there is a top prize for Best Pet/Owner Lookalike Costume, among others, so get planning! Great Annapolis Pumpkins: Even though the actual size of historic downtown Annapolis is only 8 square miles, we pack a lot of punch for the holidays, especially during Halloween. With approximately 4-6 giant pumpkins weighing between 900 and 1,400 pounds carefully placed around town, visitors are invited to find them all and pose for a pumpkin selfie. On the weekend of Halloween, local artists transform these pumpkins into massive jack-o-lanterns, providing a delightful spectacle for all to enjoy.

Sherwood Forest: This enclave of historic waterfront cottages is a private community, but the secret is out on their annual pre-game show of Fourth of July Fireworks on July 3rd. Locals, charter boat companies and water sport enthusiasts make their way up the Severn River for a show on the water sponsored by the Sherwood Forest Community Club. This prelude may be more fun than the main fireworks display on the Fourth of July. Come to both and decide for yourself! Annapolis Oyster Roast & Sock Burning: After a frigid and snowy winter, a group of boating and sailing types decided to burn their socks as an homage to the warmer temps and the ability to opt for docksiders and flip-flops. Sherwood Forest Now, we celebrate this rite of passage on the spring equinox by bringing a pair of socks to burn in a bonfire at the Annapolis Maritime Museum, while enjoying amazing local bands and partaking of delicious oysters prepared in various ways.
The Vintage Loop: Anne Arundel County has a tried-and-true tradition of being an excellent place for thrifting, antiquing, and vying for vintage wares. We even have an entire southern Anne Arundel County region dedicated to the art of the find! Along this looping stretch of rural byway, you will find quaint and chic vintage and antique stores winding through the bucolic countryside. Find items like old cannery and oyster cans, nautical treasures, vintage clothing, furniture, and housewares.
Tuba Christmas: The holly, wreaths, and bows that line historic buildings and storefronts, along with all the holiday lights, make Annapolis and Anne Arundel County a magical place during December. But one of our most unique traditions is a holiday concert unlike any other—a Tuba Concert. At St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, the circular courtyard in front of the circa 1865 sanctuary becomes a stage for a concert performed by instruments of the tuba family, including baritone horns and euphoniums. It’s a Tuba-palooza that can’t be missed!

Five centuries of fascinating history await you when you visit Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. As you trek the trails, traverse the streets, and cruise the waterways of the Chesapeake Bay, you are moving along the same routes people have used for thousands of years. Follow in their footsteps to learn about the rich history of the region and the many people who have shaped its story. Begin your adventure with a drive along the Roots and Tides Scenic Byway to explore the timeless traditions and deep maritime roots of the region. Perfect for a road trip, the byway runs parallel to the Chesapeake Bay and showcases rural landscapes and the waterside towns of Galesville, Shadyside, and Deale. Along the way you will find local seafood at crab shacks perched over the water, antiques stores full of treasures to take home, and museums that will make everyone a local history expert. Travelers have been visiting these shores to enjoy the seafood since the late 1600s. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary is an area with evidence of Indigenous people going back at least 10,000 years. Archaeological findings show Native American preparation and consumption of oysters, fish, shellfish, and crabs. Walk the trails or paddle the tidal freshwater marsh to experience the land and waterways much as the Native Americans and early settlers did. A major attraction on the Scenic Byways route is Historic London Town and Gardens, one of the earliest seaports in the region. In the 1700s it was a bustling seaport town with a tavern and inn to offer weary travelers rest and refreshment. Today it is a 23-acre museum and park featuring history, archaeology, and horticulture. Wander the eight-acre Woodland Garden of native plants and exotic species arranged along a one-mile trail before enjoying the seasonal Ornamental Gardens overlooking the South River. Kids of all ages will enjoy the Sound and Sensory Garden. Annapolis City Dock was also a thriving 18th-century port welcoming visitors from all around the world. Today, it is home to the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial that commemorates the name and place of arrival of the enslaved African. Pulitzer Prize winning author Alex Haley is memorialized in a sculpture holding his best selling book Roots: the Saga of an American Family, which begins when his enslaved ancestor Kunta Kinte arrives in Annapolis from Africa in 1767. Across the street from City Dock, you’ll find the Museum of Historic Annapolis at 99 Main Street. Its exhibit, Annapolis: An American Story, shares chronicles of Annapolis and its diverse people who helped shape the American Story. It also introduces the many interesting historical sites you can visit while in the area. Steps away from City Dock is the United States Naval Academy, founded in 1845. On the historic grounds stands Preble Hall, home of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum. The museum features two floors of exhibits detailing the history of the U.S. Navy, and includes historical artifacts such as the desk on which the Japanese signed their unconditional surrender at the end of World War II. Be sure to visit the crypt of John Paul Jones, the Father of the U.S. Navy, under the Naval Academy Chapel. Just a short walk up Main Street you will find the Banneker-Douglass Museum, Maryland’s official museum of African American history and culture. Featuring dynamic art, history exhibits, and special events throughout the year, this stop is not to be missed!

Learn More! Celebrate Historic Milestones Special celebrations in 2024 will recognize important historical events. Throughout the year, the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act will be celebrated with exciting exhibitions, programs, and events. Commemorate this landmark legislation by traveling to 60 noteworthy sites of the Civil Rights Movement and hear from those involved. For an online version of the Civil Rights Guide for Annapolis & Anne Arundel County and a listing of all the special events throughout the year see CivilRightsGuide.com. As we head toward the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution look for new events and programs throughout the county. In October, Annapolis will commemorate Maryland’s own Tea Party with the 250th anniversary of the burning of the tea-laden brig Peggy Stewart to protest steep import taxes. In December, we celebrate the return to Annapolis 200 years ago of the Marquis de Lafayette, the French and American General who played a critical role in helping the colonies win their War of Independence. In 1824 President James Monroe, facing a deeply divided country in turmoil, hoped a visit to the United States by this national hero would remind America of the price it paid to achieve independence and revive a united patriotic spirit in her citizens. To that end, he invited Lafayette to tour all 24 states as the “Nation’s Guest.” When the renowned general was in Annapolis from December 17-21, 1824, there were numerous celebrations and ceremonies in his honor including a ball at McDowell Hall.
Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial Annapolis City Dock
If you look up at any point during your Annapolis visit, you will undoubtedly see the crown jewel of the city, the Maryland State House. Located on State Circle, the heart of historic Annapolis, this historic treasure is the longest continuouslyoperating state house in the country. Serving as the nation’s Capitol at the end of the American Revolution, it was the site of the Treaty of Paris ratification and George Washington’s resignation as commander in chief of the Continental Army. Bronze forensic statues of Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass in the Old House Chamber represent the November 1864 adoption of a new state constitution prohibiting slavery in Maryland. In front of the Maryland State House, a plaza honors the nation’s first African-American Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall. The memorial honoring Marshall stands on the site where the young lawyer argued civil rights cases that would serve as foundations for the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. the Board of Education of Topeka declaring segregated public schools unconstitutional. In the northeastern part of Anne Arundel County, a family farm from the 1700s still stands today. Dubbed Historic Hancock’s Resolution after the family namesake, it is now a county park with an historic house and outbuildings, gardens, walking trails, and exhibits about the history of the area from when Native Americans inhabited the land to the time of truck farming for the Baltimore markets. During World War I, 19,000 acres of land acquired through eminent domain became Fort George G. Meade, a training facility for more than 400,000 U.S. soldiers. In 1936, a large section of Fort Meade was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as the Patuxent Research Refuge, the only refuge established to support wildlife research. In addition to a National Wildlife Visitor Center, there are meadows, lakes, wetlands, and trails that are open to the public. Today Fort Meade is home to the National Security Agency. The adjacent National Cryptologic Museum shares the stories of the top-secret machines, codes, and spies who changed the course of world events. As you explore the history of the region, take time to walk the trails or paddle the waterways to enhance your trip to another level. Imagine yourself here 10,000 years ago, 400 years ago, 200 years ago. Think about all the people over the years who traveled before you and who will travel the same paths after you. You’re in remarkable company!

SIGHTS TO SEE IN ANNAPOLIS St. Mary’s Church
SETTLEMENT In 1649, Puritans seeking religious freedom nestled into a spot on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay and called their new town Providence. Settlers soon spread across the Severn River to the land that now makes up Maryland’s capital city. The small settlement grew and was renamed Annarundell County in 1650 in honor of Lord Baltimore’s wife. By the late 1600s, Maryland’s 25,000 inhabitants had spread from Maryland’s then capital, St. Mary’s City, and Governor Francis Nicholson chose the growing town on the Severn as the new provincial capital because of its central location. Nicholson renamed the new capital Annapolis in honor of Princess Anne, who became Queen of England in 1702. He directed the city be built according to an elaborate Baroque street plan, much like the ones used in great European capitals. The highest town circle revolved around the capitol building. The focal point of the second highest circle was an Anglican church. Mixed residential and mercantile areas developed around the waterfront and along the main streets. By the end of the 18th century, Annapolis was the center of political, cultural, and economic life in the colony. Construction of what is now Annapolis’ famed Maryland State House began in 1772. The State House has since hosted many significant events, including General George Washington’s resignation from the Continental Army in 1783. Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris here on January 14, 1784, officially ending the American Revolution. And, in 1786, delegates from five states convened at the Maryland State House to discuss changes to the Articles of Confederation. 32 C h o o s e Yo u r A d v e n t u r e
Each of these events occurred in the recently-renovated Old Senate Chamber. The Maryland State House is the first and only state house to serve as the nation’s capitol, when the Continental Congress met here from November 1783 until August 1784. Today, the Maryland State House is recognized as the oldest state house in continuous legislative use in the nation.
GROWTH
A naval school was established at Fort Severn in 1845. In 1850, it was renamed the U.S. Naval Academy. During the Civil War, hospitals at the Naval Academy and St. John’s College treated thousands of wounded Union soldiers. Paroled Union troops camped outside the town. In the late 19th century, the economic emphasis shifted from Anne Arundel County’s successful plantations to the bodies of water surrounding and flowing through Annapolis. Water trades, including oyster packing, boat building, and sailmaking, emerged as major industries. Waterfront villages took root throughout the county, and shipping ports bolstered their workforce. Boasting a political and cultural history that spans centuries, Annapolis is a thriving “museum without walls” that recounts the birth and evolution of a nation amidst 21st-century living.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
CR EATIVELY SPEAKING

From its first years as an English settlement, then known as Providence, Annapolis was an epicenter of culture. Artisans were championed and revered, and cabinet makers like John Shaw were regaled throughout the colonies for their craftsmanship. During our colonial era, woodworking, pottery, painting, and printmaking were some of the most prominent and valued forms of cultural expression. Many of our talented arts community continue with these traditions today, with a few modern interpretations and improvements. As you travel around Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, you will encounter numerous avenues for creative expression. Here, we wear our (he)ARTS on our sleeves and on our walls. A short walk through our historic city center will find you face-to-face with various thoughtprovoking murals exploring social justice issues and lauding changemakers who have made great impacts regionally and beyond. Many others are wonderfully whimsical, begging to take a selfie with you.

One street over on East Street, The Colonial Players bring Broadway and Off-Broadway hits to their quaint theater which, by the way, is rumored to be haunted. Engaging and thought-provoking plays are presented here year after year. Enjoy a wide range of programming in 2024 as the theater celebrates its 75th anniversary.
MURALS FOR MILES
As you explore the Arts & Entertainment Districts of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, you may decide to take home a piece of art to call your own. With numerous artists and galleries across the county, you will easily find a work of art to commemorate your visit to the heart of the Chesapeake Bay region. West Street is the official Arts District of downtown Annapolis, featuring artist cooperatives highlighting a range of work, from jewelry and home goods to painting and glassworks.
Annapolis was once known as the cultural center of the colonies, the Athens of the New World. So, it is no wonder that art, especially outdoor art, continues to call to us to this day. Murals across Anne Arundel County enhance the architecture and praise the joys of living in a bayside town. Some commemorate the history and culture of Annapolis or beg to be the star of your next Instagram post.

Equal Justice Under Law Mural by Future History Now 156 South Street, Annapolis
Downtown, some of the most celebrated murals on Instagram are the Wisteria Wall on Fleet Street, the Equal Justice Under Law mural just off Church Circle, the Old Fourth Ward mural on the Stanton Community Center on Clay Street, and the The Waterman mural across from Gibson’s Lodgings on Prince George Street. North in Brooklyn Park, the Chesapeake Arts Center features an inspiring mural of Maya Angelou. The mural was designed by the Future History Now teaching artist known as The Artist Oliver James (Liv Gittens) and led by an all-female team of teaching artists. Along the South Forest Drive corridor, on the side of Pit Boys Restaurant, you will find a Welcome to Annapolis mural featuring our beloved state crustacean, the Maryland crab. Stop in for their famous pit beef or turkey sandwiches or a bushel of steamed crabs. But before you go, take a picture beneath the mural to commemorate your time and tasty meal in Annapolis. In the Annapolis neighborhood of Eastport, you will see murals dotted throughout the community, covering a variety of themes. At O’Leary’s, artist Charles Lawrance left his mark on the fence surrounding the restaurant’s parking lot. It is a psychedelic and colorful tribute to the region’s nautical roots. Eastport also features murals by renowned artist and muralist Cindy Fletcher Holden. She has decorated many Annapolis and Anne Arundel County buildings with her art. Our shopping malls and entertainment districts have also joined the outdoor art renaissance. At Westfield Annapolis Mall, artists have created art installations that meander through the highend shopping destination, and many have become Instagram hotspots, like the Stamps of Annapolis installation, which features vignettes of our destination on artistic postage stamps. At Annapolis Town Center, the storefronts and staircases pop with creative vision and optical illusions, like the Blue Heron mural by JAHRU. The murals draw in just as many oohs and aahs as the stores, boutiques, and restaurants and are the perfect addition to the outdoor shopping mecca.

SEAS THE DAY AT USNA Herndon Monument Climb
A
Annapolis attracts visitors with its charm— old brick-lined sidewalks, fresh Maryland seafood, historic architecture, and boutique shopping, located along the banks of the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. What makes Annapolis stand out from other historic seaports and military destinations is its strong connection to the U.S. Navy and Naval Academy. The Academy’s proximity to downtown Annapolis and connection to the community have inextricably tied the military school with the residents. Ask military officers stationed on The Yard (the Naval Academy campus) what is different about being in Annapolis and they will tell you—not only is the Academy a working naval base, but it is also a destination for visitors to learn about the history and traditions that prepare the Brigade of Midshipmen to commission into the naval service. From its founding in 1845, the mission of the U.S. Naval Academy is to “develop midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor, and loyalty.” Attending the Academy is highly regarded as the admission process is based upon receiving a nomination generally by a seated U.S. Senator or congressional representative. The Naval Academy is the undergraduate college of the United States naval service. Each June, families from around the globe descend onto the Academy for Induction Day, when candidates are sworn into active duty as midshipmen in the U.S. Navy. After attending the Academy for four years and graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, midshipmen commission as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. For context, Naval Academy graduates are required to serve at least five years. V I S I TA N NA P O L I S.o r g

Life at the Academy is cyclical—just as the seasons turn, so do the signature events that make visiting the Academy memorable. The Yard is full of energy in the spring as classes come to an end and Graduation and Commissioning Week is on the horizon. Commissioning Week kicks off with the annual Herndon Monument climb. Open to the public, the climb marks the end of plebe (freshman) year for the class and presents them with a unique challenge. The plebes must retrieve a dixie cup hat that sits atop the 21-foot monument which has been mischievously covered in vegetable shortening by upper classmen. Visitors can view the Blue Angels Flight Demonstration (and practice) in the skies above the Severn River during Commissioning Week. U.S. Naval Academy

And they can watch the Color Parade, a presentation of the military discipline, professionalism, and teamwork necessary to succeed as a member of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Most midshipmen go on summer training, but the incoming class is in full force during Plebe Summer after Induction Day. You have the chance to run into them learning all aspects of midshipman life on the Yard. During the summer, you can also enjoy the Anchors Aweigh Music Tour detailing the U.S. Naval Academy’s rich musical history. The tour unveils the history behind USNA’s beloved “Anchors Aweigh” song as well as the fascinating and often unknown history of Charles Zimmerman. The musical tour is followed by a complimentary USNA Navy Band performance.

In the fall, you can’t miss the annual USNA Halloween Concert held in the Main Chapel. The concert is a spectacular event of music, light, drama, and dance. Tickets sell out fast and should be purchased online as soon as announced. Winter in Annapolis is breath-taking. The season, known as the “Dark Ages” by midshipmen and alumni alike, brings new adventure. You may even catch one of the largest rousing snowball fights if you time it right in front of Bancroft Hall, the midshipman dormitory. Plus, plan your visit in February to see the USNA Glee Club Winter Musical —in true Broadway style. During the academic year, there are a few key milestones and events not to be missed! Make time to take the historical Yard walking tour at 11:00 or 11:30 a.m. including the traditional noon meal formation of the Brigade (weekdays excluding Wednesdays). This tradition began in 1905 to take attendance and is a must-see on your visit. If you think you are not up to the hour and a half walking tour, consider signing up on-line before you come to Annapolis for a fun driving tour in one of the USNA five-passenger electric vehicles. After noon meal formation, find lunch for yourself at the Alley Restaurant, housed in the lower level of the Naval Academy Club (weekdays). Then, located right across the street from the Alley, visit the Tripoli Monument. Known 52 C h o o s e Yo u r A d v e n t u r e
as the oldest military monument in the United States, the monument recognizes Navy heroes that died at Tripoli during the Barbary Wars. Preble Hall, home to the Naval Academy Museum, is the next stop with two floors of exhibits about the history of sea power, the development of the U.S. Navy, and the role of the U.S. Naval Academy in producing officers capable of leading America’s sailors and Marines. For a mid-day pick me up (or a strong start to the day), grab a snack at one of the 1845 Coffee locations. Step inside the oldest standing building on the Yard, order a delicious treat, and peek inside the shadow box that displays the original architecture of this special spot. Proceeds from the shop support the Brigade of Midshipmen. Did you know that more than 50 Naval Academy graduates have become astronauts? Learn more about this and other interesting facts about midshipmen and alumni at the ArmelLeftwich Naval Academy Visitor Center before you go. After your first visit to the Academy, the memories you capture will beckon you to return. Whether it be the change of the seasons, a sporting event, a cultural performance, or a parade, visitors somehow always find a way to make it back to Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, and to the Naval Academy. Why America’s Sailing Capital? Sailboat racing never stops in Annapolis. Sailors can race every day of the week during the warmer months—from dinghies to big boats. Annual regattas happen every weekend, and national and world championships are regularly hosted here. Annapolis is home to Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB), providing accessible boating and has the home yacht club for the tall ship Pride of Baltimore II, the first Baltimore clipper to be built in 150 years. In the winter, racers don dry suits and warm gear to race every Sunday in a series aptly called Frostbites. And if you still want to argue with an Annapolitan about the capital of sailing in the United States, keep in mind Annapolis IS the capital of Maryland.

The BWI Trail circles Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and links to the B&A Trail for an added 12.5 miles of paved trail. This trail is suitable for the littlest bikers and can be adapted to challenge even the most experienced cyclists.

Pickleball Pickleball, currently the fastestgrowing sport in the United States, has found a welcoming home in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. The Annapolis Pickleball Club, established in 2013, remains a popular hub for the sport, with more clubs and indoor courts emerging in the region. Drop in and play during your visit at The PutAway in Millersville, a facility with indoor and outdoor courts, or at Ball at the Mall at Westfield Annapolis Mall (outdoor courts are open seasonally). See the action from May to September during Inner West Street’s Dinner Under the Stars. Throughout the event, the Annapolis Pickleball Club creates chalk-drawn courts on the roped-off block and invites members to participate in a round-robin-style tournament under the twinkling lights. Nearby restaurants offer alfresco cafe-style seating beneath a canopy of stars set against the historic and picturesque backdrop of scenic landmarks and the pickleball courts. It’s become an Annapolis tradition. Regardless of where you play, it’s clear that Pickleball is here to stay.

BY GOVERNOR WES MOORE
As the Governor of Maryland, it is my honor to welcome all those seeking an unforgettable experience in our beautiful state. Last year marked a momentous occasion for my family and me as we walked from City Dock to the Maryland State House, where I had the honor of being sworn in as the 63rd Governor of Maryland. On that significant day, we officially became Maryland’s First Family and the newest residents of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. Since then, we have explored much that the city and county have to offer—from our beautiful parks and bustling downtown Annapolis shops to historic museums and captivating attractions along the water. We’ve also had the privilege of welcoming many visitors to events hosted in our home, Government House—or as we call it, “The People’s House.”

Here in Maryland, we celebrate our diversity, honor our rich history, and work together to support and grow our communities. This is Maryland’s decade, and we encourage visitors of all ages to come and enjoy all that the state has to offer. This region is a perfect example of how this state is a world-class destination for visitors of all ages and where everyone is welcome. In this article, you will find a few places that my wife Dawn, our children Mia and James, our dog Tucker, and I love to visit—from outdoor adventures to one of our favorite coffee shops.

DOWNTOWN ANNAPOLIS Downtown Annapolis is always a sight to see—from the beauty along the water to its thriving local businesses. On any given day—you can find my wife Dawn with Mia and James walking downtown to get dessert from the local ice cream shops. The kids love the ice cream from downtown. Also, I enjoy picking up a famous “cup of joe” from Rise Up Coffee or eating out at restaurants like Chick and Ruth’s Delly. During her free time, Dawn also shops regularly at the local boutiques for clothes and home decor. Our locally-owned businesses are what keeps our economy thriving. They are the heart of our community, and our administration is doing everything we can to support them and watch them grow. 68 C h o o s e Yo u r A d v e n t u r e

BACON RIDGE NATURAL AREA Bacon Ridge Natural Area is a treasure in Anne Arundel County. Located in Crownsville, it is a beautiful place to take a hike and walk along the accessible trails. I hit the trails in honor of National Take a Hike Day 2023 with Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman, Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Josh Kurtz, park rangers, and staff. My dog Tucker joined us and loved the exercise.

KAYAKING IN ANNAPOLIS
Annapolis’ scenic water views are breathtaking. Last summer, I took advantage of the water activities available in the city as my son James and I hit the river for a kayaking experience with Capital SUP. It was a great opportunity to bond with my son, exercise, and take in the beauty of Annapolis. Photo by Patrick Siebert/
BANNEKER-DOUGLASS MUSEUM
The Banneker-Douglass Museum is one of the great landmarks of our state and stands in Annapolis as a living tribute to the extraordinary contributions of African Americans from all walks of life. Named after Benjamin Banneker and Frederick Douglass, who both made a profound difference in the course of our nation—the museum preserves Maryland’s history and teaches our history to all those who visit. At the Banneker-Douglass Museum, I proclaimed 2024 as Maryland’s Year of Civil Rights. Over the next 12 months, we will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act with programming across the state. This is an opportunity not just to study the unlikely heroes of our history, but also to unearth the unlikely heroes living within each of us. For all those visiting—please get out into our communities and take advantage of the programs being offered during Maryland’s Year of Civil Rights.

SANDY POINT STATE PARK We can’t talk about parks in Anne Arundel County without Sandy Point State Park. Sitting along the Chesapeake Bay—it is the perfect mix of natural and scenic areas, amenities for visitors and families, and educational facilities. I visited when most people wouldn’t expect—in the height of winter. As one of my first events as governor in January 2023, I took the plunge with Lt. Governor Aruna Miller and the fearless athletes of the Special Olympics of Maryland. Sandy Point State Park welcomed hundreds of people of all ages that day for a great cause—and yearly the park welcomes thousands of families from around the nation to Maryland. The Annapolis and Anne Arundel County culinary scene runs as deep as its heritage. The port town established as an English settlement in 1649 was a promising commercial center for the new colony. The county’s position as a nautical crossroads also made it a spirited social spot, with George Washington and signers of the Declaration of Independence sharing toasts at the still-lively Reynolds and Middleton Taverns. Politicians and lobbyists keep the tradition alive today at places like Harry Browne’s Restaurant, conveniently located across the street from the Maryland State House. In downtown Annapolis, “crab is king” and for good reason. The Chesapeake Bay you see from City Dock is the best blue-crab nursery in the world. A classic Maryland crab cake is all lump meat, with just enough binding to hold it together. But it’s not just the crab cakes that beckon. You’ll find crabmeat hash for breakfast at Iron Rooster, crab-topped pizza at Fox’s Den, soft-shell crab tacos at Vida Taco Bar, and more.

Garten
Did you know that oysters are also a regional treasure with a fascinating history? In the 19th century, oystermen brought their delicious bounty to City Dock and sold these bivalves straight from their boats. Today, you can savor oysters served chilled on the half shell at historic Annapolis Market House, char-grilled at McGarvey’s Restaurant and Oyster Bar, packed onto a chilled seafood tower at The Choptank, or dropped into an Oyster Shooter (vodka and cocktail sauce) or an Oyster Mary (vodka, bloody mix, and lemon) at Boatyard Bar & Grill. But that doesn’t mean Annapolis is only about seafood. Café Normandie is a longtime staple that delivers a taste of Provence, France, while Osteria 177, Carpaccio, and Acqua Al 2 share regional Italian cuisines. The culinary diversity continues on West Street, a cornerstone of the Annapolis Arts & Entertainment District, with Oaxacan cuisine at Picante, stellar sushi at Tsunami, classic pub food paired with live music at Stan & Joe’s Saloon or Rams Head Tavern, and creative small plates at Leo Annapolis and Level. Farther along West Street, hop from True Food Kitchen to Tuscan Prime Italian Steakhouse to Ziki Japanese Steakhouse at Annapolis Town Center. On the Annapolis Neck peninsula, dig into great barbecue at Annapolis Smokehouse and Tavern or classic American fare (and delicious cakes) at Main & Market. In West Annapolis, you will find a delightful and quaint restaurant row featuring a breakfast and brunch bonanza at Evelyn’s, Agave Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar, and RAR Restaurant and Taproom, a brewery serving new American classics. Northern Anne Arundel County also adds to the mix of flavors, making it a well-known region for international cuisine. Locals head up Route 2 for authentic Guatemalan chicken pepian at Chapines, Vietnamese pho at VN Noodle House, lamb vindaloo at Namaste Fine Indian Cuisine, Jamaican ackee and saltfish at Judy’s Island Grill, or authentic Japanese noodle dishes at Ramen Ya. In northern Anne Arundel County, Pasadena offers plenty of dock bars with relaxing views. For starters, check out Sam & Maggie’s Dockside Grill for scratch cuisine with Latin and Caribbean influences, The Rumor Reel for soft crab sandwiches and family-friendly fare, or Rams Head Dockside for seafood, burgers, and brews.

Crabs: The Maryland Way The Boathouse
It’s true; Marylanders are crazy about crabs. You’ll see them on everything from T-shirts and hoodies to flags and dishware. The Blue Crab is our official state crustacean (yes, that’s a thing) and the inspiration for our unofficial state slogan: Maryland is for Crabs.

Should your travels take you to BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, take advantage of the opportunity to experience some of the best food in the county. While Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland in Hanover is the state’s largest gaming and entertainment venue; it’s also home to signature steaks at The Prime Rib and tasty Asian fusion at Luk-Fu. Just down the road, swing by G&M Restaurant & Lounge, a landmark since 1993. (Their crab cakes are so beloved they ship them nationwide.)
If you like craft beer, you’re in luck. Anne Arundel County is home to an ever-growing list of nano, micro, and craft breweries. From Forward Brewing in Eastport (try the Annapolis Boat, a delicious Kolsch-style ale) to Pherm Brewing Company in Crofton. More of an oenophile? Head to Dodon Vineyards in Davidsonville or Great Frogs Winery in Annapolis for a weekend wine tasting sometimes featuring live music, or venture to Thanksgiving Farm Winery in scenic South County. Pick a date, any date, during the April through October Maryland crab season for a mouthwatering adventure. Cantler’s Riverside Inn may be the most famous crab house in the area, family-owned for generations and serving crabs caught locally on the Chesapeake Bay. But every local has a favorite. Mike’s Crab House in Riva overlooks the South River. Mike’s Crab House North in Pasadena overlooks Rock Creek. Snag an outside table or order steamed crabs to go at Wild Country Seafood in Eastport. As you can imagine, there’s never a shortage of crab shacks to visit during your stay. If you’re not a crab fan (yet), no worries. Crab houses have plenty of tempting items on their menus—from fried shrimp to steak and everything in between.
76 76 C h oC ohsoeo sYo e uYo r uArd A v ednvteunrteu r e !
What makes them so unique? A crab is a crab, right? Wrong. Maryland blue crabs grow up in the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay, which is a mix of salt and fresh water (aka brackish water). We believe that mix makes them sweeter than crabs from saltier regions, like the Gulf of Mexico. Blue crabs hibernate over the winter, burrowing beneath the seagrasses on the Bay floor. They build up fat stores throughout the summer and fall months, helping them survive the winter which leads to their delectable and delicious buttery taste. Most other places boil their crabs, but Marylanders know steaming them is the way to go. Steaming keeps the crabs moist without the risk of waterlogging. And when you do it the true Maryland way, steaming them with beer (a light one, preferably local Natty Boh) and loads of Old Bay or J&O seasoning, the result is a flavor like no other. At a traditional Maryland-style crab feast, the steamed crabs are presented on a large platter or poured onto the center of a long table covered with paper along with vinegar, butter, and Old Bay for dipping. Order sides of Eastern Shore sweet corn and hush puppies, and you have yourself a feast! Crabs take a lot of work to eat, which is part of the joy—crab feasts are the perfect way to spend time around the table with the ones you love..

Looking for something different? Short-term rentals provide an in-home experience in areas without hotels. Chesapeake bayfront accommodations abound in beach communities countywide, many in cute bungalow cottages or larger, spacious homes with sweeping sunrise views. Farm stays—some with an added benefit of fresh eggs—and hunting cabins are also available.

Minutes from urban hubs and attractions for when you want to go explore, but miles away when you want to sit back and enjoy the calm. Short-term rentals are perfect for a large group or a longer stay.

WINNER
MARCELLA TOWNSEND Introducing Marcella Townsend, the winner of our inaugural Visitor Guide Photo Contest. Marcella is a vibrant, creative spirit who relocated to Annapolis in the summer of 2023, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of Washington, D.C. A self-employed bookkeeper, she immerses herself in the arts, from gardening and photography to the culinary arts. After 32 years of tending to a mature garden, she is embracing the excitement that comes with starting anew. Tell us about the winning picture. The picture is the view from my home in the backyard. It’s the view I see every day, and I always leave the windows open in the morning to see the beautiful sunrise. There is a lake inlet off the river in front of the house, giving us an estuary. This particular morning in August, it was getting so vibrant even before sunrise. I just happened to be there to capture the moment. When capturing shots, what is your process? The picture paints itself. I try to create a good balance in the contrast when I take photos. My phone, the Pixel 7 Pro, has an amazing camera, making it super easy to snap away wherever I am. What is your favorite part about living here? My favorite part is being near the water and seeing all the wildlife. We have a bald eagle nest on our property, and they had a baby this year. The proximity to the bay is impressive as well. I have been blown away by the amount of events and the friendly atmosphere of the community. I told my husband I wanted to move to a place that was “like a Hallmark movie.” When we came for a day trip and had time to explore, we knew Annapolis was where we wanted to move.
