Antwerp commemorates the centenary of the First World War and building bridges In 1914 Antwerp briefly was the capital of Belgium. A last beacon of hope for a population on the run and a country that was on the verge of war. One hundred years later the Peace Centre has organised a contemporary commemoration programme with international appeal, along with more than 50 partners. The commemoration will emphasise the dark side of war and the necessity of peace. We have chosen to focus as much as possible on personal testimonies and references from daily life, in order to reach a broad public, with particular attention to children and young people. The interaction between the past and the present is woven throughout the commemoration programme entitled Antwerp ’14-’18. In addition to focusing on the past, the project continually reflects back to the present. It will also serve to enhance the image of Antwerp, highlighting the city as attractive, avant-garde and contemporary. A unique and human story of refugees, art and a pontoon bridge across the River Scheldt.

Bridge programme Walk across the bridge that commemorates the centenary of WWI, following in the footsteps of the many thousands of refugees, on 3, 4 or 5 October. Meet your family and friends in Grote Markt where the experience starts and you can obtain further information about the project and tickets. Depart in Steenplein, with your bridge ticket, for the one-way crossing to the Left Bank. We recommend reserving tickets beforehand through ww.antwerpen14-18.be. On Friday evening 3 October around 7 p.m. Antwerp’s church bells will ring in the construction of the bridge. Go to the Scheldt quays for a good view of the opening spectacular “Les Sirènes de la Paix” by Cie Mécanique Vivante. Enjoy the amazing sound and light show while the Belgian and Dutch sappers build the pontoon bridge. The public can then walk across the beautifully lit bridge in the magical glow of the bridge lights. On the Left Bank you can enjoy a diverse cultural programme, which extends from Frederik van Eedenplein to the Field of Buoys (Boeienweide), from Thonetlaan to the Pedestrian Tunnel. The programme will be organised throughout the weekend and is free for everyone, even for those who did not purchase a bridge ticket. The bridge ticket also serves as your free or discounted admission to the 1 temporary exhibitions in the participating museums. (see map)

Continuous programme on the Left Bank/ Linkeroever Walk across the River Scheldt and enjoy a wide range of activities for people of all ages, such as musical intermezzos and theare performances. Go to the covered Duvel Dream Ship for a real taste of the atmosphere and enjoy the view from the panoramic terrace. Taste stew, a sandwich with paté, deep-fried dough balls or other retro delicacies in the field kitchen. The “Hellemonden” poetry trail by Vonk & Zonen will take you on a tour of twenty tombstones with poems by the war poets. Discover all kinds of books about WWI in the pop-up bookstore by the MAS Shop. The Defence Village has a slew of military attractions in store for visitors, including a death ride, a climbing wall, a demining stand and a face make-up booth. The programme also caters to very young visitors: besides the permanent playground in the Field of Buoys children can also have a fun time in the “play container”. Hardy seamen between the ages of 5 and 14 years can learn to tie knots like sailors and hone their climbing skills on the amazing nautical island at the Sea Scout Base of the Scouts & Guides of Flanders, FOS Open Scouting, Royal Marine Cadets and Are You Waterproof. Return to the Right Bank through the Pedestrian Tunnel where the audio trail by “De Lijfeigenen” will take you back in time to the war 2 with all kinds of sound fragments. (see map)

On Friday evening 3 October we will organise Urban Memorial, an urban evening programme for young people. Let’s Go Urban provides a platform for spoken word artists, a live band, DJs and dancers, to take an urban trip through time. The programme will start around 8 p.m. on the Left Bank (Linkeroever).
Everyone is welcome to join in in the dance programme on Saturday evening. Radio Modern – which has been renamed Radio Musette for the occasion – will take you back in time on a journey to the heyday of the Belle Epoque, as of 7 p.m. during a “bal populaire” with accordion music.

Sihame El Kaouakibi is the founder and director of Let’s Go Urban as well as the patron of the Antwerpen ‘14-’18 project. Defence is also contributing to Antwerp ‘14-‘18. As was the case 100 years ago a pontoon bridge will be built across the River Scheldt. To span the river’s complete width (350 metres) the Belgian and Dutch sappers will join forces to successfully complete this feat. More than 150 men from the two Engineers Battalions and 40 trucks of materials will be used for this special achievement. In so doing the Belgian Defence shows that it has the know-how and techniques to quickly build such structures, along with their Dutch partners. In the run-up to the bridge festival soldiers with all types of specialities will assure the assembly, assembly, opening and securing of the pontoon bridge, which will be the “pièce de résistance” of the festivities with which Antwerp remembers WWI. Historic city walks Walk: “Antwerp during the Great War. The First World War behind the double belt of fortresses.” The 2 hour walk starts out at the Festival Hall in Meir, which served as King Albert’s residence during his stay in Antwerp. From there we walk to Steenplein. Along the way the guide will draw attention to historical buildings (or their former location) which played a role during the First World War. Other aspects will also be covered: the attitude of “Antwerp” Germans, Antwerp’s aviation pioneers, famous authors and artists who experienced the war in Antwerp, the refugee issue. Here in this cemetery, which is the biggest in Belgium, covering a surface area of 84 hectares, you can trace the history of our city in the stories of famous and not so famous people. The German soldier Otto Zschocke was the first to be buried here. You can find him in row 1, in grave no. 1. Find out more about his story and that of many other military victims as of 29 August 2014 in an open-air exhibition in the military field of honour of Antwerp’s Père Lachaise. In the port of Antwerp you’ll find the largest museum collection of cranes in the world. The collection consists of 18 cranes built by 15 Belgian and foreign manufacturers. Most of them are now listed monuments.
Cranes are first mentioned in the port of Antwerp in a document dated 1263. That’s more than 750 years ago! The oldest crane still in working condition stands beside the MAS museum.

Did you know ...
Once the Deurganck dock lock enters operation in 2016 it will be the largest dock in the world, with a length of 500 metres and a width of 68 m. Simply excavating that volume of sand took nearly three years!
Antwerp is a major international port, and so ships from all over the world call here. Such as the Mary Maersk, one of the largest container carriers in the world, able to hold no fewer than 18,000 containers.

That’s how many bridges there are in the port of Antwerp!
... that a pontoon bridge was first built across the river Scheldt in 1585? In this way the Duke of Parma, Alexander Farnese, closed the river to shipping and completed the encirclement of the city. Antwerp was forced to surrender and fell into Spanish hands once more.
The port of Antwerp handles an average of 8.5 million containers per year. That’s nearly 1000 per hour! In fact Antwerp is the second-largest container port in Europe after Rotterdam.

In the port of Antwerp you’ll find the largest museum collection of cranes in the world. The collection consists of 18 cranes built by 15 Belgian and foreign manufacturers. Most of them are now listed monuments.
Cranes are first mentioned in the port of Antwerp in a document dated 1263. That’s more than 750 years ago! The oldest crane still in working condition stands beside the MAS museum.

Once the Deurganck dock lock enters operation in 2016 it will be the largest dock in the world, with a length of 500 metres and a width of 68 m. Simply excavating that volume of sand took nearly three years!
Antwerp is a major international port, and so ships from all over the world call here. Such as the Mary Maersk, one of the largest container carriers in the world, able to hold no fewer than 18,000 containers.

... that a pontoon bridge was first built across the river Scheldt in 1585? In this way the Duke of Parma, Alexander Farnese, closed the river to shipping and completed the encirclement of the city. Antwerp was forced to surrender and fell into Spanish hands once more.
The port of Antwerp handles an average of 8.5 million containers per year. That’s nearly 1000 per hour! In fact Antwerp is the second-largest container port in Europe after Rotterdam.

Traces of the First World War in the Middelheimmuseum collection On both sides of the front the lives and early careers of many an artist were put on hold by World War I. Some artists were marked for life by the tragedy of war, dedicating their entire body of work to it. Others broke free from the rhetoric of aggression and suffering. • The Middelheim Museum has put these artists and their work back in the spotlight with “Signed, the artist”, a presentation of more fragile works in the Braem pavillion. The exhibition focuses specifical ly on the sculptures of Käthe Kollwitz. Shooting Range. Photography in the firing line? The ‘Great War’ was the first large-scale conflict that was recorded on celluloid and film. The fledgling media appeared to have unprecedented powers as the all-seeing eye, a reminder, but also as a weapon. Images not only chronicle a conflict, they also play a crucial role in it. Shooting Range highlights the way in which this happened in a conflict that kept the world in its grip for four years. This exhibition demonstrates how stationary images were used in newspapers, magazines, postcards or for military purposes. Propaganda and anti-war films are used to supplement the image of this global conflict. Historical pieces are displayed in their original forms. Far from the war? Belgian immigrants in America during World War I In the early twentieth century, in the years running up to the First World War, Belgian migration to the United States peaked. When the German army occupied Belgium in 1914 all trans-Atlantic passenger traffic from Antwerp ground to a halt. Belgian Americans suddenly found themselves cut off from their motherland and in many cases from their family. How did they experience the war? How did they express their solidarity with their country of origin? With the Detroit Gazette as their primary source, Belgians in the United States learned of how those they had left behind were faring in their home country.
