INSPIRING ANTWERP: JASPER LÉONARD.

This Is Antwerp wants the world to become familiar with our young local creative talent and entrepreneurs. More than ever they are the beating heart of our dynamic city. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why we offer the cover of our magazine to upcoming Antwerp artists as a platform to display their work. by Michelle GinĂŠe

This issue’s artist is the talented yet offbeat photographer Jasper Léonard. We sat down at his office to chat about his work, the inspiration behind his cover and of course his love of Antwerp. Our man

Jasper shares his small office, located at ‘t Eilandje, with a small venture specializing in video montage. The place is strewn with video equipment, old cameras, sketches, negatives and printed photos. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we arrived at the work space of an artist today. Jasper is a very down-toearth guy and when he speaks, he does so with passion. Especially when asked what he does for a living. When he says he doesn’t really work but plays with his favourite toys and gets paid for it, we believe him. Jasper Léonard, a Borgerhout native, lives and works in the beautiful Cadix neighbourhood. His photography addiction started when he got his first camera at the age of nine. Ever since he’s been hooked on capturing the perfect moment on film. His mind was quickly set on becoming a photographer. No, scratch that last part. His mind was set on becoming a damn good photographer, so as he got older his passion for photography only grew. He decided, successfully, to do a Master’s degree in Visual Art. During his studies he was very interested in different ways of depicting reality. ‘Sounds heavy huh?’, he laughs, but gets even more passionate when he starts explaining the technical specifics of his thesis. It’s a real pleasure listening to him get all excited about what seems like little details to us, but mean the world to him.

Instruments

Our cover artist likes to work with analog as well as digital cameras. All sizes, all ages, as long as they give him the opportunity to experiment. When asked about his specific photographic specialties he

had to meditate for a moment: ‘That’s a tough one’, but he soon answered decisively. There are a lot of aspects of photography that make him love his craft. But one of the most appealing elements is the different possibilities of capturing reality. He challenges himself and reality by reconstructing and designing his own lenses and attachments for his cameras. Jasper uses existing lenses, the glass part, but does the whole remodelling and design by himself using the tilt-shift technique. The results are astonishing. Another aspect of photography that he finds very challenging is experimenting with light: double exposure to be precise. The cover photo is a result of using this technique. Of course you can only practice this technique of double exposure by using an analog camera. To take these pictures, Jasper uses cameras that are older than his parents. What makes this technique so special is the multiple exposures in camera. Meaning it gives him the opportunity to let images blend with each other. It requires serious thought about what he’s trying to capture. Important in the whole process, he assures us, is not to lose the spontaneity of the moment. Furthermore, Jasper tries to combine all of these techniques into stop motion projects. Jasper made a name for himself with his first stop motion project ‘Small Belgium: Antwerp’, using computer simulated tilt-shift pictures. From then on things moved pretty fast. As a time lapse and stop motion producer he was even asked to make a minimentary for Rock Werchter, one of Belgium’s largest music festivals. VZW Stadsfotograaf, a non-governmental organization that assigns photographers to capture their view of Antwerp, selected him from a pool of other artists. Because our man is deeply in love with Antwerp and its architecture he couldn’t but agree to become one of the City Photographers. What he likes about Antwerp from a photographic perspective is its scale. Compared to other world cities everything in Antwerp is rather small but it still has a very international feel. In addition, the city is always in motion. There’s always something happening somewhere. The art is to be there at the right time. To him that’s a very attractive asset for a city.

‘Triple skyline °1’

When we compliment him on how beautiful we think the cover picture is, he glows with pride. It didn’t take him long to decide what kind of image he wanted on our cover. What did take some time though was shooting the right picture. Using his Baldalux camera, straight from the 1950s, he searched for the perfect view of the Antwerp city skyline. He then combined two more exposures to narrow down the view while applying over exposure on the slide negative. Don’t worry, we don’t understand either. Working with slide negatives instead of regular film negatives enabled him to construct an abstract triangle. The crazy thing is that no computer or other digital instrument was used while shooting or after the picture was made. In order to get the perfect shot he strolled around the city for a week using four different antique cameras and six rolls of medium-format film. ‘Why the Antwerp skyline though?’ When Jasper thinks of Antwerp he thinks of its three symbols, the Cathedral, Boerentoren and MAS. He loves how the Antwerp skyline symbolically represents our past, present and future.

Short Q&A WHERE DO YOU LIVE? I live in the neighbourhood of ‘t Eilandje WHAT PLACES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO A FRIEND FROM OUT OF TOWN IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD? MAS (1) and Red Star Line Museum (2). A nice place because it’s near the city centre, but also not too crowded. WHEN YOU’RE HUNGRY YOU GO TO … ? When I go out for dinner, I love to go to El Warda (3), a Moroccan restaurant in Zurenborg. Very nice food and friendly people. When in the mood for Belgian cuisine I usually go to De Taloorkes (4) (‘The Plates’ in Antwerp dialect) in the city centre. When I’m too lazy to cook or when I’m just in the mood for a traditional snack I visit my local French Fries shack (aka frituur), a small place where they basically deep fry anything. There are a lot of them around. WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE BAR? I have two ultimate favourites. The first one is Bar Lucy (5). Because of its relaxed atmosphere it’s always lovely to meet up with friends. They often have gigs or art exhibitions. The second one is De Pallieter (6), an infamous bar in Antwerp because it’s open late and always crowded. Perfect for late-night escapades. WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE SPOT? My all-time favourite spot in Antwerp is near the banks of the River Scheldt. In particular, where the river curves near Kattendijkdok. If you’re looking for an everlasting impression of Antwerp make sure to witness a sunset there. It’s absolutely beautiful. So bring your camera! Or your partner!

When a flower is plucked from its habitat it loses some of its natural glow. Sure, it remains a beautiful flower, but it has a different feel to what it had in its original locale. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exactly what we felt when pinpointing sweet hotspots in a list of different areas around town. Some of the hotspots needed to be seen in the context of their neighbourhood. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why we have let five locals show you around five different Antwerp parts of town. Discover their favourite bars,

places to hang out, food booths, music venues and much more. Time to shine like a local.

THE HOODS: INTRODUCTION.

Because I was born and raised in Antwerp and I‘ve lived here all of my life, I assumed I knew every rock, every corner and every bush in it. However, about a year ago I had a small identity crisis when I discovered ‘den 2060’ (aka Antwerp North) properly. It’s the only part of town you can refer to using its area code without making a total fool of yourself. Since then, without a doubt it’s become one of my favourite hoods to hang out. Its mix of different cultures, cosy spots, cheap ethnic food and nice buildings has got me hooked.

Dress code 2060

Blending in like a 2060 local is a tough ask. Not one particular style has the upper hand. Or maybe it does, but this changes with every street you walk down. The mishmash of styles from all over the world are sure to have something to do with it. I’m talking African to Chinese style, from Turkish men to Polish women. Name it and you will find it. Even though all the people are different from each other – and I know I’m risking sounding like a postcard here – the familiarity and cosy feel in this hood tends to connect everybody.

THE HOODS:

Cargo Zomerbar by Lara Richir

Park Spoor Noord is a fairly new park. This area used to be an old train repair centre before the city of Antwerp decided to develop it. Here you can find my favourite spot to spend warm summer evenings: Cargo Summerbar (7). They offer a variety of concerts, theme parties and all sorts of evening activities throughout spring and summer. Apart from organizing events, Cargo Summerbar is also known for its tasty homemade sangria and pizzas. Good tunes, delicious food/drinks and a bunch of friends. What else do you need (except maybe for the sun to shine)?

Panamarenko

One of 2060’s most famous inhabitants must be the internationally renowned artist Panamarenko. His art, mainly sculptures, revolve around aviation and everything else that remotely has something to do with this theme. He donated his house/atelier (8) to the M KHA Museum of Contemporary Art (9) in Antwerp so people could visit it. It’s a rather small house but it will give you a great insight into where and how Panamarenko used to live and work. Crazy vibes. It even has a helicopter platform on its roof. You can see Pepto Bismo (10), one of his statues, on Sint-Jansplein.

2060.

Sun Wah

Sun Wah (11) is a big Asian supermarket in Antwerp’s Chinatown, mainly located in Van Wesenbeekstraat. At Sun Wah’s you can find many different kinds of Asian ingredients that you won’t be able to find in a regular supermarket. The cool thing is they sell more than just food. You can also buy your porcelain, kimono and cooking utensils there. If you’re looking for cheap but delicious food and you’re feeling adventurous, at the back you’ll find racks stacked with instant noodles with every flavour you can imagine – or can’t imagine for that matter.

It always takes me at least 10 minutes before I can make a choice. While Van Wesenbekestraat is known as little Chinatown, in Muizenstraat you’ll find a lot of African specialty stores and eateries. If you feel like having Turkish or Moroccan food go for a 5 minute walk to Handelstraat. If you can’t find what you’re looking for there, you’ll probably never find it, ever.

Veldstraat zwembad

The oldest swimming pool (12) in Antwerp is located in Veldstraat. The pool is built in Art-Deco style and is a piece of art on its own. Apart from swimming facilities, there is a hammam, a bathhouse and a beauty centre. Perfect for a rainy summer’s day.

But the most important reason is because to me this area has something irreplaceable. The sweet vibes when walking through the hood after dinner. If you ask me, this is one of the best things Antwerp has to offer.

THE HOODS:

I decided to guide you through the Antwerp area known locally as the Jewish neighbourhood. I have a couple of good reasons to do so. The first reason is rather obvious because of my Antwerp-Jewish roots. Secondly, because I’m in love. In love with the food you can find in this neighbourhood. Bagels that taste like the sun on my tongue, fresh falafel & humus pita which sends me right back to Israel, or honeysweet cheese pies.

Must see

My neighbourhood has a few classic must-sees that I can’t avoid telling you about. But since you can find them in ev-er-y tourist magazine I’m just going to sum them up without going to much into detail. There’s the world-renowned Central Station (13). It’s a classic for a reason. Don’t just pass it by if you’re around. Take a couple of minutes to go inside. You won’t regret it. As well as the Antwerp Port and the booming fashion industry, Antwerp is known for its diamond industry. The diamond centre of Antwerp is located right in the middle of the Jewish neighbourhood. There are tons of jewellery shops. If you want to go for a little stroll away from the city centre follow the elevated railroads(14). It’s really nicely decorated

and if you follow it all the way to Berchem you’ll end up at some nice local bars.

Dress to impress

Some of the things most people notice right away is the, er, different way some people are dressed. It’s not at all a fashion industry statement. Au contraire, together with New York and Israel, Antwerp has one of the largest Jewish Hasidic communities in the world. Because of their beliefs they have a specific dress code which makes them easy to recognize. Typical features of the very complex orthodox community are: old school hats, long beards, long curly hair around the ears and black nineteenth-century styled suits. They’re very nice people, but very focused on religion. That’s why people easily get the impression that the Hasidic community is very insular.

THE JEWISH QUARTER.

The perfect spot to chill on a sunny Sunday afternoon, or any other time really, is without a doubt the City Park (17)(Stadspark). I know it’s a cliché but some clichés actually make sense. The English-style park has a pond with ducks and geese in it, a romantic pedestrian bridge and even a skating bowl. The City Park is the perfect place to picnic. You’ll meet a lot of locals with the same master plan. Oh, I almost forgot, the park is the home of well-hidden Second World War bunkers. Seek and you will find.

Kaaskoek, falafel & bagel

My favourite bakery is Steinmetz (18) in Lange Kievitstraat. Ask for their kaaskoek (cheese cake) and treat yourself to a piece of heaven. It’s a rich cheese cake that you’ll never forget. If you’re not into sweets, get a bagel sprinkled with sesame seeds. Your taste buds will be grateful.

De Sokkel

In the City Park there is a pedestal that used to have a statue on it. A long time ago it was taken away to be cleaned, but it was never returned. So the only thing left was the empty pedestal. A local community organization together with Middelheim Museum decided to start the art project DE SOKKEL (15) (pedestal in Dutch). Every six months they invite an international artist to exhibit his/her art on the pedestal. Check out the nice graffiti mural at Mechelsesteeg (16). It’s a very small alley behind Sint Vincentius hospital, which locals use as a shortcut from Lange Leemstraat to Mechelsesteenweg. In the old days during the plague the alley was used to take corpses away without drawing too much attention. The mural shows famous old and not so old locals. Antwerp graffiti artist GUN-T and friends put the 30 square metre image on the wall.

If you’re in the mood for a solid snack try Rachel’s falafel (19). It’s a little falafel restaurant on the corner of Lange en Korte Herentalsestraat. The service is fast, the food is amazing and the price is right. Just how I like it. Try not to go there during lunch hours. It’s located right on the corner of the diamond district and a lot of diamond dealers go there to grab lunch. It’s highly likely that you won’t be able to get a seat. So go early or for late lunch if you don’t like waiting for your food. My personal all-time favourite place for lunch is Bagelbar (20) in Lange Leemstraat. Avi serves the best bagels ever and is always prepared to chat. A lot of locals visit this place so it’s really packed during lunch time. Don’t forget, most shops in the Jewish area are closed on Saturday because of the Shabbat. Le’chaim!

To me Antwerp is like oxygen. I need my daily dose to survive. Throughout my life I have lived in different parts of this crazy city. The only time I cheated on Antwerp was during college. But we worked things out between us. Now we’re as tight as ever. Today I live in the Brederode neighbourhood, one of the most underrated hoods in the city. That’s why I’d like to show you what’s good in my hood.

There’s no way you can talk about Brederode without mentioning colourful Brederodestraat (21). This street is often compared to a typical main street in a small town, the only difference being the international feel to it. What makes this street special isn’t the variety of stores but its unique fusion feel. A place where Old School Antwerp meets New School Antwerp. Also, if you’re not afraid of clogging your arteries, Brederodestraat is meat sandwich heaven. Yes, even late at night scoring food isn’t a problem.

Hotspots

If in need of a cheap haircut or in need of other parts of your body trimmed – some would call it violated if not prepared properly – Ons Kapsalon (40) is the place to go. You can even get your nostril hair cut. Don’t expect a hip barbershop with a hipster barber to be at your service. Do expect good service and a budget-friendly price. One of Antwerp’s architectural pearls is the new Palace of Justice (22), designed by Richard Rogers. It’s a very modern building. A little bit too modern for some. It is known locally as the ‘Butterfly Palace’ or ‘The Upside-down French

Fries Pockets’, depending on whether you talk to a supporter or a scoffer. See for yourselves.

Rock ‘n Roll

BREDERODE.

For me personally a good music venue has to meet a few basic standards. In order of importance: solid live acts (preferably rock’n’roll), good sound quality, cheap entry, good atmosphere and the possibility of a good snack. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to Venue 219 (22). For me, this bar has it all.

Strengthen thy inner self

I am very particular when it comes to food. Sure you can get a snack on almost every corner in this neighbourhood. But if you’re looking for a restaurant where you can taste some decent Belgian cuisine without hurting your wallet, Walrus (23) is the place to be! Especially if you try my all-time favourite dish – and probably the favourite of half the Antwerp population – Belgian stew with fries (aka stoofvlees met frieten). Eating stew like a local comes with a manual. Step 1: Spread your fries on your plate. Add salt. Step 2: Drown’em with your stew. Step 3: Squirt mayonnaise on top. Step 4: Don’t look at it, just eat it. Step 5: Enter foodie-Valhalla.

Suit up!

Earlier I talked about how New School meets Old School in Brederode. No better way to make my point than explaining the difference in male street style. The New School sporty comfy style must have been invented in this neighbourhood. Slide into your comfortable work-out pants (any brand will do) and walk around like you own the street. Make sure you wear white socks. Only in this neighbourhood though! Be confident but always friendly. Designer (fake) man-bags or hats are possible but not required. If you like your style classy you definitely need to go Old School. Get yourself a tailored, preferably old, suit. Don’t mix up the Old School uniform with designer clothes. That would be offensive. Think more of suits sewn by someone’s musty uncle who was a tailor in the Great War. Respectable, yet somewhat old fashioned outfits are the way to go. Gentlemen, suit up!

I recently decided to move from Ghent to Antwerp. After working in Antwerp for a few years my decision was not hard to make. You could say I’m the new kid in town but I already know my way around. I’m very excited to share my fresh insights about Borgerhout, my new home, with you. I like Borgerhout (aka BoHo) a lot. It’s such a great mix of cultures. Furthermore, it’s a magnet for young progressive families. The district of Borgerhout used to be a bit shabby but recently it’s been rediscovering itself. A lot of creative artists and young entrepreneurs live here. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you walk the streets. Or maybe even better, ride your bikes, because bicycles are booming big time in this part of town. But what I like most about Borgerhout is its high population density, one of the highest in Belgium. Some call it crowded, I call it big city life.

Happy people

One of the best assets of Borgerhout is that you don’t have to go through a hassle to fit in. The only dress code for locals is that there is none. Everybody can wear whatever he or she wants. Be aware though: some of the outfits out there might be very (I mean V.E.R.Y.) colourful. But that’s the BoHo spirit: happy people make colourful people.

Bakery

Although Turnhoutsebaan is an important traffic street it’s known for its hodgepodge of stores. You can shop for furniture, have fried fish, visit a theatre and get your shoes fixed in less than half an hour. Also, if you’re looking for halal food, this is a good place to find your stuff. In my opinion the nicest shop on Turnhoutsebaan is my all-time favourite bakery: Roma (24). You haven’t lived until you try one of their delicious cakes. But it gets better, try their cheese sandwiches. You can get them with lettuce, tomato, corn, olives … You name it, if its edible they’ll stuff it in! Heavenly. I haven’t told you the nicest part yet: it’s so cheap you feel like you’re robbing the place!

BOHO. Leon’s place

My favourite BoHo food booth is actually a bar located on the totally renovated Krugerplein. Bar Leon (25) is one of those places that once you set foot inside you’ll feel right at home. It’s a meeting place for young creatives. They even have a very small exhibition area where they sell work by local artists and musicians. This bar usually has a busy schedule because they organize a lot of parties, gigs, exhibitions and other stuff. Even though they only serve food on Thursdays and Sundays it’s totally worth a visit. The choice is usually limited to a plat du jour with meat and vegetarian options. No matter what you choose it’s always tasty, fresh and cheap. If you’re travelling solo and are on the lookout for a nice chitchat, a couple of beers and a good meal, trust me, Bar Leon is the place to go.

BoHo sound

There are quite a few music venues in Borgerhout. You have Plaza Real (26), Bar Leon or de Roma (27) (not the bakery) to name some. But if I had to choose the best place to go to enjoy a good gig in a cosy atmosphere I would definitely go to Café Mombasa (28) on Moorkensplein. It’s the place to be for locals, where you can enjoy a fine

selection of beers and catch up. Also on Sunday night (early) they usually have live music on their mini-stage. Mombasa is probably the centre of bicycle-crazy people in BoHo. So if you want to catch a bicycle race on the big screen with a whole bunch of other bike-enthusiasts, you now know where to go. This square is also the home of Borgerhout city hall (29). This nineteenth-century building is completely constructed from bricks and breathes history. If you can visit it during office hours make sure to go inside. You’ll be totally flabbergasted by it’s beautiful design. If Lady Luck is really on your side you might be able to enjoy the beautiful sound of the carillon. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

We’re Tine and Helen, twin sisters and passionate about Antwerp and its fashion scene. We decided to cover part of the Antwerp district of Berchem, Old Berchem to be precise, because of its homely atmosphere and authentic feel. Sounds corny, we know, but it’s true. Old Berchem has not yet been discovered by herds of national or international tourists. We feel its identity is still pure and untouched. You could say Old Berchem is keeping it real. That’s why a lot of Antwerp locals hang out there.

If you’re into architecture, Old Berchem is most definitely a neighbourhood you will want to discover. It’s packed with beautiful old nineteenth-century Art Deco buildings. In the area around the elevated railroads (14) especially, you’ll find a lot of treats. Here’s a list of streets that are definitely worth strolling down (to name a few): Stanleystraat (30), Zenobe Gramméstraat (31), Cobdenstraat (32) and Cuperusstraat (33). We’re aware this list of streets with impressive buildings is incomplete. But look at it as a starting point for your very own journey of discovery. Enjoy!

Rood-wit

Café RoodWit (34) is more than just a bar. It’s the epitome of Old Berchem’s couleur locale. It’s a place where many local creative people gather together to babble the night away, that’s if they

BERCHEM. get the chance to because the bar hosts lots of gigs. The concerts are always free, with the type of music varying, but mostly acoustic and folky. During the day RoodWit is a perfect place to have a beer or a coffee while reading your (international!) newspaper. In the middle of the pub stands a three cushion billiards table waiting for you to play.

Kornél

This fairly new coffee bar/art gallery/ co-working space/organic produce distributor is a great acquisition for Old Berchem. In the centre of Antwerp there are myriads of coffee bars, while in Old Berchem it’s hard to find any. But Kornél (35) hits the right spot. The cosy decor is ideal for taking a well-deserved break. Furthermore, owner Liesje is very devoted to selecting the right coffee and tea blends. It’s important for her that with every cup she serves, her clients are assured of a certain quality. Also, if you have a sweet tooth, we highly recommend the pies and brownies. Kornél’s exhibitions are mainly of promising artists from Huis Haas, a label which brilliantly catches the young and creative vibe in the Antwerp art scene.

Brilschanspark

Just outside Singel you can find the brilliant Brilschanspark (36). It’s quite a small park but has all the assets of any other awesome park. What distinguishes it is the tranquillity. Luckily for us the general public hasn’t discovered Brilschanspark yet. This makes going for a run easier and more pleasant. Just beware of the rabbits – they’re everywhere in this park. You can see them day and night. Recently, the city put lounge chairs in the sunniest spot in the park right near a pond. If you’re looking for us this summer, chances are you will find us there.

Sonseveria

Sonseveria (37) is one of the reasons why we love Old Berchem so much. The food is always fresh, there’s always a theme menu on Friday and the service is always friendly. Try the ginger tea, it’s heavenly. The restaurant/bar is located in the midst of old residential buildings near a cosy square. It looks like a picture from a story book. The very colourful retro decor makes you feel right at home. Sonseveria isn’t the biggest place around so you might need to give them a call for a reservation.

Antwerp has a very diverse population, with more than 170 different nationalities (say what?!). You can imagine that all these differences have a huge impact on Antwerpâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daily life and culture.

11, 12, 13-06-2014 If you want to explore the world of poetry in Antwerp, you definitely need to visit the Felix Poetry Festival. A three-day feast for your eyes, ears and mind. It will take place at the beautiful old warehouse, Felix Pakhuis, which lies in the shadow of the possibly even nicer MAS. On each day of this three-day festival, the centre stage is solely dedicated to poetry. The first day will mainly be devoted to Dutch poetry, but don’t let that be a hurdle. Au contraire, knowing a sentence or two of Dutch poetry may do the trick when dating a local. The second day will focus on Moroccan and Turkish poetry. The third day will be all about Filmpoem. This is the art of making a poem come to life through visual images. In collaboration with Scottish artist, Alastair Cook, the Felix Poetry Festival is dedicating a full day to this beautiful genre. 10-08-2014 Espectro is run by three young Antwerpians who felt the need to add some fresh flavours to the Antwerp art and culture scene. Last year they joined forces to create accessible art and cultural events. For a location they always pick a unique place in Antwerp. Whether it’s the basement of a bookstore or an old 18-something-century mansion, they are always able to create a home-like vibe. Their main goal is to let people enjoy art and performances by national and international artists in a comfortable way. The fourth edition takes place at Huis Happaert, a sixteenth-century building straight from a fairy tale. This pearl of Antwerp history will be the setting for a day full of art and culture. 21, 22, 23-08-2014 Antwerp Street Kicks is t.h.e. event that highlights the lively urban culture of Antwerp. The three-day festival takes place at ‘t Eilandje (the little Island). This neighbourhood has been the subject of a serious upgrade and is still booming. The festival gives you a solid idea of what’s going down in the Antwerp urban scene. Not only can you participate in street-art workshops but can you get a taste of urban sports such as BMX, skateboarding, Red Bull X-fighters, wakeboarding and last but not least, freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Yes, you read that last bit right. There will be a ski slope built in the middle of the summer to show off Antwerp’s snow-sport talents. Enjoy the chilled atmosphere and learn more about the Urban Culture lifestyle. While you’re at it, go and take a free peek from the MAS rooftop and treat yourself to the best view of Antwerp. 12, 13-09-2014 Many artists and young upcoming talents in the international fashion industry retreat to Antwerp to learn the craft or find inspiration. What started out as a fashion night to show off Antwerp fashion talent by the internationally renowned Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts quickly became a two-day festival. During the festival, the fashion industry gives the city itself a fashion ‘make-over’. Last year, big-ass fashion-installations were placed all over the inner-city. This year AFF Fashion Show will take place on 12 September, showing off different brands and new talents in Antwerp. The day after, all participating shops in Antwerp’s fashion district will open their doors late – until 10.00 p.m. – to spoil you with special gifts and yummy food & drinks. We are stoked that one of the rising stars in the international Raw House scene found the time to chitchat with us about his project and his love of Antwerp. Lenny, one of our locals, met up with Antwerpbred DJ/Producer BABEL, aka Teun Lauwerier. BABEL, still weary from his late-night set â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or should we say early-morning set, took our questions like a man and answered them all with a smile.

INSPIRING ANTWERP: BABEL.

LET’S START WITH WHERE IT ALL BEGAN. HOW DID YOU GET INTO DJ-ING AND PRODUCING MUSIC? T: To make a short story long (smiles): It started at the local boy scouts where my buddy and I were getting interested in turntablism and, I’m not going to lie, being the party starters. We operated under the DJ name ICONS. We mostly played at small local parties. That’s how I rolled into the game. After a while I started my solo project BABEL. SO DJ-ING IS WHAT YOU LIKE DOING THE MOST? T: What I actually like most is mixing other people’s music. That’s a skill I still try to perfect every day. Getting my first setup installed and starting to play with it like it’s my new favourite toy. I put my first mixes on SoundCloud and soon started to get a growing group of followers. SO IS THAT WHEN THINGS STARTED TO HAPPEN FOR YOU? T: My remix Låpsley - Pick Me Up (BABEL Remix) exploded on SoundCloud. I didn’t see that coming. All of a sudden I scored 190,000 plays and more than 3,000 people following me on SoundCloud. Wicked! Everything’s going really fast. I have to give a shout out to @The Sound You Need. Without him I wouldn’t be where I am now. IN THE INTRO I CALLED YOU A RAW HOUSE DJ/PRODUCER. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC STYLE? T: Tough question. I don’t know really. I don’t really fit into the Deep House scene, which is rather big in Antwerp. I’m a resident DJ at Ecstatic Events. They focus mostly on UK House DJs. So when I play a gig I probably lean more towards UK House than Deep House. But getting into all that technical stuff would lead us way too far (smiles). HOW DO YOU COMBINE ALL OF THIS WITH GOING TO COLLEGE? T: I’m just going to wait and see what happens. I love to make music and all that but I don’t want to give up on college. Right now I am trying to combine both. It’s hard sometimes but we’ll see where I end up. Right now I’m mainly working on new mixes and hanging out with friends. I just hope I can keep making music and keep growing. I realize to achieve something in the music scene you need to work hard. Most important though, I want to stay true to myself.

YOU HAVE A RATHER LARGE INTERNATIONAL FAN BASE, MOSTLY FROM FRANCE, THE UK AND THE USA. COULD YOU PICTURE YOURSELF LIVING SOMEWHERE ELSE? T: It’s weird to see, but the music I make is getting much more attention in countries like France and not Belgium. Over here it’s really hard to break through as a Feel Good House producer. That being said I love living in Antwerp. I was born and raised here and all of my friends live here. Some even claim Antwerp is the best city in the world (smiles). DO YOU HAVE ANY SECRET HANGOUT SPOTS IN ANTWERP? T: Maybe I do, but I’m not going to tell you because then it wouldn’t be a secret anymore! NOTED (SMILES). LET ME PUT IT DIFFERENTLY. WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN YOU JUST WANT TO RELAX IN ANTWERP? PLACES PEOPLE VISITING ANTWERP SHOULD DEFINITELY KNOW ABOUT. T: I love to eat at my mum’s because she’s the best cook in the world. But I don’t know if she would be very happy to cook for all of your readers. I usually hang out in Bar Deco (28) behind Groenplaats. It’s a really cosy bar with democratic prices. It’s just a very nice place. If you ask me, you can’t get much more Antwerpian than that. Or maybe you can! There’s always Café De Vismijn (29). Less comfy than Bar Deco but a perfect example of an old school Belgian bar. In my opinion they serve the best ‘pintjes’ (pils beer) in the whole city! As far as parties in Antwerp go: to name two, I would say all KISSINGER parties and ECSTATIC Events. They are always spot on and in really nice locations. Good to know - Most stores are closed on Sunday, except for the ones in Hoogstraat and Kloosterstraat.

- Most stores are closed on holidays like Whit Monday, 9th of June, the National Holiday, 21st of July, and Ascension Day, 15th of August. - You often have to pay a fee to use the toilet. - A beer or as we say ‘pintje’ will set you back approximately ¤2 (so don’t get ripped off). - Most museums are closed on Monday. - Most markets take place on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. (Vrijdagmarkt, Exotic market, Bird Market,…). - We only have 4 cinemas in our city center: UGC (approximately 20 screens), Cinema Zuid (quality programming and re-runs), Cinema Klappei (a small local theater, re-runs) and Cinema Cartoons (quality programming and re-runs). - Don’t overpay for fries: there are a lot of great frie shacks (‘frituur’). Keep it around ¤2,5 for a big one (without sauce). - We have a pop-up culture, so check our (free and offline) app to see where the party’s going down. - If you get into trouble (which you won’t) and you need help from the police, medical emergency team or the fire brigade, call ‘112’.

How to get around By taxi Sometimes it’s easier to use a taxi to get from point A to point B but here are some ground rules: 1) you can’t wave your arm around and expect a taxi to stop. You have to call one (or use the app) or go to one of the taxi stands. 2) you can fit 4 people in a normal sized taxi and up to 8 in a van. It’s a lot cheaper to share a cab! 3) You have to pay extra to take a cab at night. Starting rate is ¤5,45 from 10 pm till 6am.

You can buy a single ticket for ¤2 on the bus or buy one in advance at the machines on the platform. If you are partying the night away on Friday and Saturday you can always take the night buses. They leave at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Groenplaats and T. Rooseveltplaats. Definitely check the time schedules in advance because they change during the months of July and August. By bike VELO Biking is always a nice way to explore a city. You can rent a red bike (you see them all over town) with your creditcard in 3 different ways. 1) Go online to www. velo-antwerpen.be and buy a day or week pass. 2) you can call the information desk (+32 (0)3/206 50 30 or 3) you can visit the info desk at Kievitplein 7, 2000 Antwerp (closed on the weekends). SPINLISTER You can try Spinlister (www.spinlister. com) and see if there are any available bikes for rent. This site allows people to rent bikes from locals.
