Dear Readers, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Visit Bahrain’s guide. The Kingdom of Bahrain has upheld its reputation as one of the most welcoming countries in the Gulf region, with its people renowned for their warmth and hospitality. ARABIC LANGUAGE FOR TRAVELERS Making a start in an Arabic-speaking country!
Traveling throughout the Arabic speaking world can be confusing, especially if you can’t read the signs or understand the instructions you’re given. Although English is generally widely understood, learning a few Arabic travel - related words and phrases before you embark on your journey can be of great help. Here are a few general terms that everyone should know before making the big trip:
Ahlaan/ As salaamu alaykum
Ma’a Salama Goodbye!
General greetings. The latter is a more common greeting exchanged by Muslims all over the world.

“Thank you” is another important phrase to be used generously.

Make your mom proud and remember to say “please” when making requests.

Put a smile on the local’s faces by saying “Good Morning”.
Eish hadha?
Knowing how to ask, “What is this?” is extremely useful. This question can help you learn new vocabulary, abstain from undesirable foods or discover a new place.

Diving Spots FIFI WRECK
Located Southeast of Bahrain, the Fifi Wreck is at just 25KM east of Al Dar Island. This dive spot is home to surgeonfish, angelfish, stingrays, and sea snakes and is also frequented by sea turtles. In addition, it serves as a nursery for juvenile barracudas, and its corals and sponges are ideal hideaways for colorful shrimps, crabs, and other marine life.

CAISSON WRECK
Located about 20 kilometers from Bahrain, the Caisson wreck is home to massive schools of fish including small reef species and larger pelagics, as well as the occasional tuna or jack. Covered by corals and sponges, this diving spot also offers the perfect backdrop for underwater photos.

BIRDS KINGDOM
Discover all the exotic winged animals our island is home to. Al Azizia Birds Kingdom is the only public park in Bahrain specializing in endangered birds. The collection was started over 20 years ago by the late Mr. Abdul Aziz Kanoo, who had a great passion for birds. In 2011, the decision to relocate the collection to Amwaj was made and the construction of Birds Kingdom began. Birds Kingdom opened its doors to the public in 2014 and occupies over 2500 square meters of land next to the sea in Amwaj. They house over 100 different varieties of birds, many of which are classified as endangered species. The park itself is situated in beautifully maintained gardens offering a relaxed and informative atmosphere for both young and old, with a play area where the children have fun. Nest CafĂŠ offers fresh pastries, great coffee, ice cream and Juices as well as a gift shop where you can purchase a souvenir. VICTORIA CROWNED PIGEON The Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura Victoria) is a large, bluish grey pigeon with elegant blue lace like crests, maroon breast, and red irises. It is part of a genus of three unique, very large, ground dwelling pigeons native to the New Guinea region.
HYACINTH MACAW The largest parrot by length in the world, the hyacinth macaw is 100 cm (3.3 ft) long from the tip of its tail to the top of its head and weighs 1.2–1.7 kg, the neck feathers can sometimes be slightly grey.

When riding the Ziplines, customers are required to sit in a harness. All participants must be equipped with gloves in order to have the chance of braking or simply to protect their hands. The second of the Ziplines is equipped with an automatic braking system. The Fall Arrest Blocks are designed to secure users when progressing on a scale. The Climbing Wall includes two routes for climbing. The client is secured by a Trublue auto belay which, once the customer reaches the top of the wall, allows him to go down gently to the ground. Meanwhile, the Free Fall Jump features two platforms that have been installed on the roof. There are two Quick Jump devices. The first one offers a free fall of 1.5 metres. A TRADITION WOVEN IN TIME Keeping alive a craft that is an important part of Bahrain’s historical fabric: The Nagda Embroidery
G
listening against the matte fabric it is woven into, the silver or gold khos thread quite literally brings about a regal touch to the item of clothing. A craft only carried out by hand, the Nagda embroidery uses a special kind of thick metallic thread and waves it into the fabric to create a series of repetitive motifs, transforming any plain piece of cloth 68 The Guide 2019
into a work of art. Once a student, and now a teacher herself, Zakiya Ali still practices and teaches the art of Nagda embroidery, originating from Bahrain. Zakiya skillfuly showcases the meticulous manner in which the embroidery is intertwined into the fabric, akin to the history of Kingdom, which is embroidered with rich cultures and traditions have carried on for generations.
Learning the art of Nagda embroidery from her family, Zakiya received her training in 1996 and still continues to practice it today, while teaching her apprentices and trainees at the Capital Mall. In addition, Zakiya also travels regionally and internationally to hold embroidery seminars and training sessions. Carried out by hand, Nagda embroidery is done using a special needle with a thin point and a thicker back - which allow it to pierce the cloth, while also pulling the khos wires back through the eye of the needle. Each movement is carefully carried out in order to make sure the correct pattern is created. Once done, the end of the wire is folded back and forth until it breaks off. The process requires no scissors. The khos wire is bought in “tola� (a unit of weight measurement also used in buying gold, silver, and other precious metals), and is used throughout the various Nagda embroidery patterns, each of which have their own name, style, and design length. All of the embroidery is also done freehand, without having a template to trace over. What makes this type of embroidery even more special is that it can only be done on a soft fabric, as thicker fabric would not allow the needle to pierce through. Once the design is complete, the level of expertise can be seen by how smooth and soft a completed pattern feels. It is the defining trait that sets the work of professionals and hobbyists apart. According to Zakiya, depending on the size of the fabric and the intricacy of the design, it can take between 2 to 4 months to complete a Nadga embroidery. Though there may not be many in Bahrain that still practice this delicate artwork, Zakiya and her students spend 4 hours daily working together at Capital Mall. Her expertise in this art form allows her to distinguish between the different types of Nagda embroidery preferred within the different countries in the GCC region. Offering training in social centers in Al Dar, Arad, Riffa, Samaheej, Zakiya says she encourages the younger generation, boys and girls, to take more interest

ON THE WAVES OF TIMELESS CRAFTS Sailing along the winds of culture and handcrafting delicate masterpieces, Abdulla Buzabun continues to build upon the heritage of his ancestors.
L
ooking through the window of time, we can glimpse at Bahrain’s rich history in navigation. Those who pay close attention can even hear the rhythmic hammering of nails into the strong wooden bodies and see the stunning flags floating atop the fishing, diving, pearling and trade vessels that made their way across the Arabian Sea. The Kingdom’s past has been sailed by a wide range of boats, each created differently according to its scope, but all amounting to an important part of Bahrain’s industry and used throughout the years by merchants in their respective industries. From the bigger ships to smaller vessels, boats have been emblematic throughout the history of Bahrain, present since the ancient Dilmun civilisation. Creating models of the traditional 70 The Guide 2019
boats, Abdulla Buzabun reminds the younger generation about the rich history that put the wind in the sails of Bahrain to begin the voyage to its remarkable present and promising future. Abdulla Buzabun started his career by importing ship construction wood from India and Malaysia at a time when Bahrain was home to around 30 active shipyards. He worked with his grandfather to gather the right materials and measurements to build the ships used by fishermen and divers. His interest in boats, combined with his knowledge, allowed him to acquire unique skills and recognize the different woodcuts needed in order to create various types of boats. Through rigorous practice and countless hours spent on creating boat models, Abdulla was finally able to gain the expertise and to start his own business as a model builder in 1985.
Creating accurate replicas of the different types of boats such as Banoush, Sambouk, Bateck, and Baghla, Abdulla puts a lot of emphasis on the precision and dedication needed to recreate a vessel as close as possible to the original. He takes everything into account including materials, size, balancing the sails atop the mast and ensuring the perfect Centre of Effort for the ship to sail. Taking anywhere between 3 days to several months to finish, depending on the size, each piece must be created while honouring all these aspects. Using Sai wood, imported from India and Burma, due to its flexibility, and getting the sails tailored the way he designed, Abdulla says crafting the boat can be a complicated process, but that he has perfected his skills throughout the years. A master of his craft, Abdulla’s boat models have been a part of many exhibitions held under the patronage of Bahrain Authorities for Culture and Antiquities. Abdulla now works with a team of individuals who are just as keen and passionate about the art of building replicas as he is. “The youth of Bahrain must keep this craft going and must have patience. When they start, they are very excited, but when they want to sell their work, they see that the demand is not always there and lose hope”, notes Abdulla as he urges the new generation to work towards keeping this amazing craft alive. THE PAST
An architectural reminder of the days gone by, THE SHEIKH EBRAHIM CENTRE is the epicenter of Bahraini culture and history
N
arrow roads, crowded streets, welcoming faces of vendors and passerby, and shops that have remained unchanged the Muharraq Souq is an unintentional visual masterpiece, a comfort zone for the long-standing loyal customers, and an attraction for the first time visitors, as they witness the authenticity of Bahrain’s history firmly cemented in its modernized surrounding. The tapered roads of Souq Al Qaisariya lead to the Kingdom’s oldest and most desired traditional sweet shops, the renowned halwa shop, Al Showaiter Sweets, traditional Bahraini cuisine restaurant, Saffron by Jena, as well as the small vendors that draw in large crowds daily. What makes the souq an even more enchanting place is that these twists and turns lead to the Kingdom’s most treasured heritage site, the Sheikh Ebrahim Centre for Culture and Research. Set up in 2002, the centre serves as a perfect looking glass into the rich history of Bahrain. Intactly preserved and etched onto the walls of the houses it is the remembrance of the beginnings of Bahrain. The restored houses help one revive Bahrain’s past, of important figures in Bahrain’s history, members of society who helped lay the foundations of Bahrain cultural and 72 The Guide 2019
historical fabric. Throughout history, Sheikh Ebrahim was recognized for his efforts to enhance knowledge within the Kingdom, covering a wide spectrum of topics, which ranged from art, administration, education, literature, music, politics, culture, and philosophy. And each of the houses represent a pillar of these topics, as they belonged to the founding fathers of these disciplines in Bahrain. Within walking distance of each other, the houses maintain their original structures and exteriors - and ode to the spectacular architecture of Bahrain - juxtaposed with a modern and minimalist interior aesthetic, whilst their facades boast their structural authenticity. The main goal of the centre is to promote knowledge and dialogue - what Sheikh Ebrahim sought for his country. The houses that once belonged to the founding fathers of Bahrain’s cultural, historical and political infrastructures, are now used as education centers. The house of Sheikh Ebrahim, known as Memory of the House, was also beautifully brought back to life through restoration. It is from this very house that the Sheikh corresponded with the intellectuals of its time. To this day, a single wall, and a room
remain completely untouched as in the original house; his presence etched into the walls of the house through the intricate detailing, the simplicity of the structure, and the personal belongings he left behind.
DAR AL FANN: HOUSE OF ART
Encapsulating the different disciplines that form the world of art, Dar Al Fann is an artistic journey through the city of Muharraq captured in the art pieces on display by renowned Bahraini artists the likes of Ibrahim Busaad, Nasser Al Yousif, Adnan Al Ahmed, Waheeda Mallulah, and a virtual display by Sheikha Hala. The piece by Sheikha Hala is one of her most recognised works, which is an installation featuring the nets that were once used while pearl diving, complemented by fidjeri music playing in the background. Exploring art in all its forms, Dar Al Fann is a house in which the aesthetic is the core creative logic, as imagery and language intertwine to paint a picture of Muharraq on the fascinating Wall of Mahmoud Darwish. A renowned poet from Palestine, Mahmoud Darwish’s verses are inscribed on the wall. As visitors place their hands over the writings on the wall, the voice of Mahmoud Darwish himself can be heard reciting the verses. Even if he’s long gone, his creation is as alive as ever and continues to pass on the story of Muharraq and Bahrain’s deep connection with the sea.
BAIT AL TURAATH AL MEAMARI: HOUSE OF ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE
An ode to the captivating architecture of Bahrain, Bait Al Turaath Al Meamari serves almost
as a roadmap to the development of the city of Muharraq. From the defining architectural features of each era, to providing a looking glass into what life was like in the 1980s, Bait Al Turaath Al Meamari perfectly preserves the past within its walls and still keeps alive a part of Bahrain that is long gone. The history of Bahrain was so inspiring for the late John Yarwood, that he spent his time drawing and studying the architecture of Muharraq. He then donated all his hard work to the Sheikh Ebrahim Centre to help traditional architecture researchers explore new possibilities. The walls within the house stand untouched and proudly display the extensive work of John Yarwood. An untrained artist, John Yarwood’s work represents his love for Muharraq and passion for the unique and traditional means of constructing houses that not only stood the test of time, but were also an architectural marvel in design terms. His works were also used to create a book that showcases the evolution of Muharraq through time. A cemented pathway connects the houses of the Sheikh Ebrahim Centre. Around it, inhabited houses are writing the history in the making, while also offering a lively backdrop. To the visitors, the Sheikh Ebrahim Centre is a true signature of Bahrain’s rich history; to the residents it is an everyday sight, and part of their lives an imminent factor that allows them to hold their heritage close to their hearts; even though times have changed, residents can easily revisit their past by simply stepping outside and visiting the Sheikh Ebrahim Centre.
