Communities of Belmont County Barnesville
The village of Barnesville is located in Belmont County, Ohio, United States. It is located in the central portion of Warren Township in the western side of Belmont County and is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after James Barnes, who was the first settler. Total Area: of 1.95 square miles (5.05 km2) Water: 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2)

* Barnesville is home to Isaac Parker, the hanging judge. He served as judge here in Belmont County then served as judge at Fort Smith Arkansas in the late 1800s where he sentenced 160 people to hang (Only 79 were actually executed. The rest died in incarceration, appealed, or were pardoned).
Bellaire
Bellaire is a village along the Ohio River. Wheeling, West Virginia is across the river to the east. The first big boost for growth came with the construction of the Central Ohio Railway in 1853, later absorbed by the Baltimore and Ohio, and the Stone Viaduct Bridge (opened in 1871) that carried it to Wheeling, West Virginia. The town was renamed Bellaire by the railroad company. * The Bellaire toll bridge (now abandoned & closed) was filmed in the 1991 motion picture The Silence of the Lambs. Total Area: 1.68 square miles (4.35 km2) Land: 1.65 square miles (4.27 km2) * The curved railroad viaduct and bridge over the Ohio, the B & O Water: 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) Elevation: 666 ft. (203 m) Population: 4,278 Railroad Viaduct, were featured in the 2010 film Unstoppable and is a registered historic structure.
Belmont
With just under 500 residents, Belmont, Ohio, is located three miles south of Interstate 70 in eastern Ohio. It’s a place where you still see kids riding bicycles and adults walking through the neighborhoods. It’s a place where neighbors help neighbors. Originally named Wrightstown, Belmont has a rich history dating back to 1808. Next time you’re traveling State Route 147 through town, stop by the mill, which has been in the same family since 1900. The Village of Belmont has 0.27 square miles 0.70 km2), of which, 0.27 square miles (0.70 km2) is land and 0 square miles (0 km2) is water. Population of 453. * Belmont was the home of the late Harley Warrick, the man who was responsible for painting many of the Mail Pouch Tobacco barns. * Belmont was also once considered for the county seat because of its central location and being located on the National Road. Rumor has it that they changed their name to Belmont in hopes of securing the seat.
Bethesda
The village of Bethesda is located in the western portion of Belmont County and is home to approximately 1400 residents. Epworth Park is in the heart of the town, which hosts the Chautauqua Days Festival in July. Total Area: 0.64 square miles (1.66 km2) Water: 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2)

* Bethesda has had three names: Burrs Mills, Fairmount, and Bethesda. When the railroad reached the village in 1852, the Central Ohio Railroad built a station and named it Burr’s Mills in honor of Merrick S. Burr, who operated a sawmill in the area. In 1855, Burr laid out a village which he called Fairmount because of its high and beautiful location.

Bridgeport is a village that lies across the Ohio River from Wheeling, West Virginia, and is connected by two bridges, one to Wheeling Island and one to Wheeling, West Virginia across the Ohio River. Total Area:1.38 square miles (3.57 km2) Water: 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2)

Colerain
Colerain, although unincorporated, has a post office, with the ZIP code of 43916. It lies along U.S. Route 250. It is located on the county’s north-east border. Colerain was originally built up chiefly by Quakers from North Carolina and Virginia, who left those states due to their opposition to slavery. Total Area: 25.0 sq mi (64.7 km2) Water: 0.2 sq mi (0.4 km2)

Flushing
Flushing is a village in Belmont County platted in 1813 and incorporated in 1849. Flushing was laid out by Jesse Foulke, who named the town. He taught the first school and kept the first store. In the early 1900’s it was a “boom town” because the Cleveland, Lorain and Wheeling Railway entrance into the southwest end of town made the small coal mines that dotted the area into commercial ventures with the railway shipping out their coal. Martins Ferry
Martins Ferry is a city in Belmont County. It enjoys the honor of being the oldest settlement in the state of Ohio, having been settled at least as early as 1779. The community was a westward extension of the city of Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia). Directly across the river lies the city of Wheeling, West Virginia, and just miles to the east is the Pennsylvania state line. The city of Columbus, Ohio, is 125 miles to the west, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is 59 miles northeast of the city. Morristown
Morristown is a village in Belmont Co. located about half a mile south of I-70 and with the closest Mile Marker being 208. Morristown's Main Street is the original US 40. The village of Morristown was platted in 1802 and is considered one of the best preserved examples of a National Pike Town. Its historic homes and buildings date from the early to mid 1800s and feature some of the more common architectural styles found along the National Road, the nation’s first federally-funded highway. The city of St. Clairsville, originally known as Newellstown, is the county seat of Belmont County. The seat of justice of Belmont County was originally known as Newellstown, and nicknamed “Paradise on the Hill”. The Official Belmont Co. Seal, designed by county native Michael A. Massa, features 13 stars, denoting that the county was the 13th parcel to have originally been incorporated into what was the US Northwest Territory. Barnesville B&O Railroad Depot 300 East Church St., Barnesville, OH 43713. The depot was opened in 1916 and was the site of many village events, including troop send-offs during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. A walking trail is also being developed. Barnesville Historic District Barnesville was first “laid out” in 1808 by James Barnes, who had travelled to the area hoping to create a new Quaker settlement in a rural setting. He found rolling landscape along a Drovers’ road ideal for a site and soon platted out lots and roads for his new town. Blaine Bridge Ohio’s oldest bridge. 1828 Blaine Bridge, Enjoy your walk on Ohio’s Official Bicentennial Bridge. Black Horse Inn 203 Cross St., Morristown, OH 43759. Black Horse Inn may be Morristown’s most famous landmark. Erected around 1807 as a smaller structure, additions came later along the years. Concord Quaker Meeting House Negus Rd., Township #456 Colerain, OH. The meeting house was built in 1813 and remodeled in 1863 and 1898. It has three thick brick walls original wooden pegged benches. On the Ohio National Historical Register. Epworth Park 211 Virginia St., Bethesda, OH 43719. The Epworth Park Cottage Owners Association invites you to visit historic Epworth Park. The park continues to instill the peace and serenity which offers an escape from the fast-paced lifestyle that we know today. Great Stone Viaduct Bellaire, OH 43906. The Great Stone Viaduct serves as the western approach to the former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Bridge spanning the Ohio River. Great Western Schoolhouse 45101 National Rd., St. Clairsville, OH 43950. The one room ocated just west of St. Clairsville in Belmont County on Ohio University’s Eastern Campus. It was built in 1870 by the Clark Construction Company. The bricks for the school were hand-kilned from clay taken from the banks of the farm pond located at the bottom of the hill from the school. 2020 marked the school’s 150th anniversary. Historic Churches Walking Tour Martins Ferry, OH 43935. Eight churches of various religions can be found along 4th & 5th Streets, Walnut, Locust and Clay located in Martins Ferry, Ohio. Lentz Tavern 55101 National Rd. W., St. Clairsville, OH 43950. The Brick Tavern, also known as the “Brick Tavern House,” “The Tavern Stand,” and “Lentz Tavern” is a Greek Revival example of a roadside inn built circa 1828 by Samuel Robinson. This tavern is one of a handful of known structures still standing along the National Road. The Brick Tavern was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Ownership changed several times and in 1855 Simon Lentz operated the inn. The title remained in the Lentz family through 1886. 8
Morristown Historic District The Village of Morristown was platted by Jonathan Zane and William Chapline in 1802 and named for an early settler and innkeeper, Duncan Morrison. The National Road, the major overland route to the West in the second quarter of the nineteenth century was the crucial factor in Morristown’s development. Plummer House 62004 West Tacoma Rd., Barnesville, OH 43713. This land was purchased in 1801 by Abraham Plummer. This house was an important source of income for early settlers as drovers stopped and spent the night often. Shaeffer Campbell Covered Bridge 45425 National Rd. W., St. Clairsville, OH 43950. The Bridge stands east of the Ohio University Eastern Campus, I-70 Exit 213, overlooking a pond. It was originally built in 1891 in Fairfield County. Rescued from destruction in the late 1960’s, it was reconstructed on the present site in 1975. St. Clairsville Historic District The community was founded in 1796 and was originally named Newellstown in honor of its founder, David Newell. According to reports, Newell in 1802 renamed the town in honor of his cousin General Arthur St. Clair, who was the first governor of the Northwest Territory, a confidant of George Washington, and President of the First Continental Congress. Stillwater Meeting House 61826 Sandy Ridge Rd., Barnesville, OH. The plain federal style brick building seats 1,500. It was built in 1878 to house the Ohio Yearly Meeting of Conservative Friends. The building contains a Quaker Heritage Museum. Open by appointment. Stratton Flour Mill 110 Mill Rd., Flushing, OH 43977. The Stratton Flour Mill served the Ohio Valley for more than 85 years, producing the finest bread and pastry flours and one of the first self-rising pancake flours, for which the Mill became famous. Today, the Mill is being restored to its appearance in 1902, and to the power source introduced in 1937, a 50 horsepower Buckeye diesel engine. Walnut Grove Cemetery North 4th St.,Martins Ferry, OH 43935. Dating from 1795, the cemetery is Martins Ferry’s oldest pioneer landmark. It is the resting place of the Zane and Martin families.

The National Imperial Glass Collectors’ Society, through its Museum, is dedicated to preserving the history of the Imperial Glass Corp. by honoring its employees and providing education and research opportunities. For 80 yrs, Imperial was one of the largest handcrafted glass companies in America. The Museum is a “must visit” for glass enthusiasts. Witness an extensive array of Imperial Glass (Candlewick, Cape Cod, carnival, slag, & more) created from 1904 to 1984 along with related exhibits. One can peruse many photographs of former employees (at work, group pictures, & portraits), the “Big I” factory, and scenes of Bellaire Ohio, Imperial’s home for those 80 yrs. A visitor may also envision the incredible talent of the mould makers and their meticulous work at the mould maker’s bench—an exhibit constructed by Island Mould & Machine of Wheeling, WV. Alongside that exhibit rest some of the tools use by the glassworkers. For sale in the gift shop is a modest selection of genuine Imperial Glass. A visitor might find that perfect and unique gift, an entire set of goblets or other stemware, or that one piece needed to fill out a collection. Both the Museum and Gift Shop are easily accessible at sidewalk level. Plenty of street parking is available adjacent to the building both on Belmont Street and 32nd Street.

Historic Landmarks of Belmont County Old Places Matter B
elmont County is the home of many historic sites where pieces of social, political, military, and or cultural history have been preserved due to their cultural heritage value. The area has many places that represent its strong roots and rich history. These landmarks preserve the stories of the area. There are 27 properties and areas listed on the National Register in the county, including one National Historic Landmark. The city of Martins Ferry is the oldest settlement in Belmont County as well as Ohio, having been settled at least as early as 1779. It was surveyed by Absalom Martin in November of 1787. His son, Ebenezer Martin, was responsible for much of the growth of the settlement. The city’s oldest pioneer landmark is Walnut Grove Cemetery. Dating from 1795, the cemetery is the resting place of the Zane and Martin families, as well as veterans dating from the Revolutionary War. A veteran of the Mexican War is buried there, with the date on the stone being 1849.
In 1826 Concord Monthly Meetinghouse had 279 members. The building eventually was reduced in size because of the difficulty in heating and smaller attendance due to westward migration. In 1911 Concord reported only 21 resident members. A group of descendants has restored the building which includes three-bricks-thick walls, and the original wooden pegged benches. The building is on both the Ohio and National Historical Registers. Quaker Josiah Fox, Father of the U.S. Navy is buried in the adjoining cemetery to the building. He helped design the SS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”) and her sister ships the United States, Constellation, Congress, and President. The U.S. Navy placed a bronze plaque listing the ships he designed on his grave in 1976.
When Captain Absalom Martin died in January, 1802, at the age of 43, he was buried in the upper end of a fine stand of black walnut trees on a bluff overlooking his farm on the bottomland beside the Ohio River. When his young son, Ebenezer, grew up and took over management of the farm, he continued to use that spot as a private burying ground for his relatives. However, the town he founded in 1835 had no public cemetery, so he surrounded the family area with a wall, and allowed the townspeople to bury in the open spaces of the grove.
Just south of Martins Ferry and located along the Ohio River in Bellaire, Ohio is The Great Stone Viaduct. This impressive structure is a reminder of the great days of railroad transportation in the area. Construction on the bridge began in 1870 at Union Street, as an Ohio approach to the railroad bridge spanning the Ohio River and the entire bridge span connecting Ohio to West Virginia. The structure opened to rail traffic in June 1871. Jointly constructed by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the Central Ohio Railroad, its sandstone piers rise in varying heights above the streets, from which are placed 43 stone arches supported by 37 ring stones, intended to symbolize a united Union consisting of 37 states. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, this Ohio River crossing became known as the “Great Shortline to the West.” The bridge was featured in the 2010 film Unstoppable starring Denzel Washington.
Originally, Walnut Grove was 20 acres and contained around 100 trees. A tornado hit Walnut Grove in 1887 and only 17 trees were left standing. Today, it consists of one acre. Ebenezer and Minerva Zane Martin sold the cemetery’s land to the town of Martins Ferry in 1866 for $100.
Numerous taverns were constructed in the Belmont County area along the Historic National Road. The road saw its golden years between 1825 and 1845. However, the coming of railroads later in the century relegated the road to a farm track and its businesses and towns were reduced to serving only local needs.
The Betty Zane statue, at the entrance of the cemetery, is a reminder of the heroine of the last battle of Fort Henry. She was named the foremost American heroine by President Theodore Roosevelt for her famous run for gunpowder to save Fort Henry. The monument was financed by Martins Ferry school children and dedicated in 1928, a century after her death. The cemetery also contains a Civil War cannon used by the Confederate forces. A historical marker was dedicated there in 1999.
The Lentz Tavern, also known as the “Brick Tavern House” and “The Tavern Stand,” is a Greek Revival example of a roadside inn built circa 1828 by Samuel Robinson. This tavern is one of a handful of known structures still standing along the National Road. Although it fell into dilapidation during the late twentieth century, it was named a historic site in 1995.
Just on the outskirts of Martins Ferry, you will find The Concord Quaker Meetinghouse. Located in Colerain and built in 1813, this location held the first Quaker meeting in the Northwest Territory.

Another historic tavern on the National Road is the Black Horse Inn. It stands above the many historically significant buildings in Morristown.
From its beginnings as the third stagecoach stop from Wheeling, Morristown prospered from the trade that came along with it, the Black Horse has been a factor in the lives of villagers and travelers alike. The Black Horse had humble beginnings as a small, frame structure built in 1807 by Duncan Morrison, an early settler, Justice of the Peace, and innkeeper for whom Morristown is named. In 1836, William Swaney built the brick edifice onto the existing frame. As the third stagecoach stop from Wheeling, Morristown prospered from the trade that came along that and the Black Horse was there, known during those years by names like the Horner House, Wright Hotel, Lippencott Hotel, and Union Hotel. By the mid-20th century, the Black Horse Inn no longer welcomed overnight guests. It then became an apartment building, then a nursing home and finally a banquet facility. Also, along the Historic National Road, is Ohio’s Official Bicentennial Bridge and Ohio’s oldest bridge and longest “S” bridge. The Blaine Bridge was constructed in 1828. The land it is on has been a major North American transportation artery since Native Americans used it as a footpath, Ebenezer Zane blazed it as a trail, General Braddock marched troops through it in the American Revolution, and WWI convoys carried men and supplies over it. The Roman-style stone bridge is 345 feet long and rises at a 6.3% incline going east to west, to a 500-foot climb to the top of the hill. Its arches are 25 feet, 35 feet, and 45 feet in length, and were originally earthen filled. The “s” shape was designed for structural strength over the strong currents of Wheeling Creek. It is the largest and last remaining structure of its kind on the entire six-state Historic National Road system. The downtown St. Clairsville Historic District is also listed on the National Register. The downtown area features 37 buildings that are significant for historical and/or architectural reasons. From the county courthouse to the home of abolitionist Benjamin Lundy, the history and beauty of these buildings are significant. The community was founded in 1796 and was originally named Newellstown in honor of its founder, David Newell. In 1802 Newell renamed the town in honor of his cousin General Arthur St. Clair, who was the first governor of the Northwest Territory, a confidant of George Washington, and President of the First Continental Congress. Founded in 1802 as St. Clairsville, it had 400 residents at the time of its incorporation in 1807. On this walking tour you will find buildings in a variety of architectural styles from Federal to Art Deco and a little of everything else in between.
The Great Western Schoolhouse
Just outside of St. Clairsville is the Shaeffer Campbell Covered Bridge. This structure stands east of the Ohio University Eastern Campus, overlooking a pond. It was originally built in 1891 in Fairfield County and rescued from destruction in the late 1960’s. It was reconstructed on the present site in 1975. It is closely situated by the Great Western Schoolhouse, located five miles west of the courthouse on the north side of the National Road. The one-room school was built by the Clark Construction Company in 1870. The school remained in use until 1952. The National Trail Chapter #348 of International Questers restored the building in 1976 as a Bicentennial project. The Quester Chapter continues to maintain the school and provides tours and educational classes to visitors throughout the year. If the flag is flying, guests are welcome to “come and sit a spell” and hear the history and numerous stories of this one-room school. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in the west of the county is the historic Epworth Park. This area was established in 1870 in Bethesda as a Methodist Campground, a place for spiritual fellowship, instruction, and renewal.

The popularity of the camp meetings that drew as many as 15,000 people each summer, led to the construction of cottages from 1870 to 1900. The park’s amphitheater and a lake were built then, as was a hotel (now gone). In the early 1900’s, the Camp Meetings were replaced by the Chautauqua movement, a huge, national movement which began at the Methodist retreat in Lake Chautauqua, New York. The Chautauqua assemblies were grand affairs, attracting the most famous actors, musicians, and lecturers of the time. Today, the park celebrates the Chautauqua Homecoming during the second full weekend in July. Concerts are also held throughout the summer in the open-air, covered auditorium. The park continues to instill the peace and serenity which offers an escape from the fast-paced lifestyle that we know today. Nestled among the grove of majestic oak trees are 61, privately owned, Victorian cottages that invite you to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, and to experience the happiness of days gone by. And continuing to the western border of the county are a number of historic landmarks. One is the Barnesville’s B&O Railroad Depot, at 300 E. Church St. This is the last remaining train station on the Baltimore and Ohio’s Pittsburgh-Columbus main line in Belmont County. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 8, 1985. The depot is built in a federal style with Spanish Mission elements. The buff red brick building is surrounded by a brick road leading uphill to Church Street. The design of the depot reflects many others built by the B&O Railroad during the early 1900s. A museum is located inside and a caboose and Roby Cigar Museum building are also located on the grounds. The Stillwater Meeting House, located on the campus of the Olney Friends Boarding School is also located in Barnesville. Built in 1878

to house the Ohio Yearly Meeting of Conservative Friends, it was established as a result of the great tide of Quaker migration which swept up from the southern states after 1800 as Quakers sought to raise their children in new lands free from the evils of slavery. Robert Plummer and his son’s family reached Warren Township by 1801. By 1803, enough Quakers had joined them so that a year later a log meeting house was built on part of a 10-acre plot purchased for $40. It is thought to have been the first church in the township. Meetings for worship have been regularly held in this spot from 1804 to the present. The name “Stillwater” was probably chosen because the earliest Friends settled near the headwaters of a stream and the present meetinghouse is on high ground just beyond it. In 1808 Stillwater was elevated to the status of “monthly” meeting. This was the year that Barnesville, until then a wilderness, was laid out and its lots offered for sale by James Barnes, a Quaker. The members of the Ohio Yearly Meeting built the current structure in 90 days for $9,000. Like most old meeting houses, it is divided into two identical parts, one side for the women, and one side for the men. The building, on the National Register of Historic Places, contains a Quaker Heritage Museum. This article shares just a few of the many destinations that represents the history and heritage of Belmont County. The preservation of these is a one-way street. There is no chance to renovate or to save these historic sites once they are gone. And, Belmont County values the strong roots that these locations represent. Burkhart’s inspiration for the event came from a trip through Tennessee with his wife in 1963 where they passed through a small town having a fall festival. The first three-day festival attracted over 3,000 people, offering the opportunity to see and to enjoy the many, many things that are grown on the beautiful acres of southeastern Ohio. It included Tom Rockwell’s 72-pound pumpkin, an entry that would set the stage for today’s huge production. This festival highlights an antique and classic car show, craft displays, farm machinery, hog calling, tall tales, pumpkins, food, quilt show, live music, family fun, and much more. Growers attempt to break the record pumpkin of 2,150 pounds! Pumpkin pie baking, pie eating, and pumpkin roll contests are also part of the festivities.

In addition to fine recreational facilities, visitors will enjoy the mature woodlands, open meadows, scenic lake and abundant wildlife of this secluded 1,232 acres of rolling hills and woodlands. Picnic areas, hiking and bridle trails, swimming, 3 shelter houses on a reservation system, fishing plus special handicapped access area. Naturalist program available. Mail Pouch Barn in the park. A special paved trail winds through the pioneer village, enters the adjoining mature woodlands and provides access to the Antique Barn. Interpretive signs are placed along the route explaining the cultural and natural history of the park. A bit of American history is preserved in the camp area. The Antique Barn was built in the 1800s by Solomon Bentley, an orchardman of renown. One variety of apple that he marketed was the “Bentley Sweet.” The barn is now home to summer naturalist activities and historical displays. A resurrected log cabin and other pioneer structures near the barn take visitors back to an even earlier era. Year-round camping available with a shower house and electric to all sites.

Dysart Woods
ohio.edu/dysart-woods Dysart Woods, a 50-acre tract of old-growth oak forest, is the largest known remnant of the original forest of southeastern Ohio. Some of the spectacular oaks that you will see are 400 years old, stand over 140 feet high, and have a diameter of four feet. The woods are located in unglaciated southeastern Ohio. This area is characteristically hilly with local relief exceeding 200 feet. The sedminentary bedrock in the region is composed mostly of sandstone and shale, with coal seams occuring variably from near the surface to hundreds of feet underground. The rainfall and temperature conditions are well suited for deciduous forests. Dysart Woods exists today as an old-growth forest because several generations of the Dysart family kept it in its natural state. The splendor of the forest, formerly enjoyed by only a few, now has become available to many. Ohio University, by agreement with the Nature Conservancy, has undertaken the responsibility of preserving this

outstanding remnant of the magnificent forests that once covered much of Ohio and eastern United States. The recognition of Dysart Woods as a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior underscores the importance of preserving it. Visitors are welcome in the woods and the adjacent areas which are used for continuing educational research programs. Ohio University has preserved the woods by keeping it in its natural state. That is, no cutting of trees is permitted and fallen logs remain to decompose and thus continue the never-ending cycling of minerals through successive generations of plants. The Department of Environmental and Plant Biology conducts studies of the woods and surrounding fields to learn more about the dynamics of a mature oak ecosystem. Research is to be done in such a way as to leave intact the ecology of the forest. Through classes, guided tours, and published research, the University shares its knowledge of the forest to enable students and visitors to understand better the world in which we live.

Egypt Valley Wildlife Area
I-70 and SR 800 Morristown, OH 43983 • www. ohioodnr.gov Egypt Valley Wildlife Area is situated in the southeastern part of Ohio, in Belmont and Guernsey counties. The primary access through the area is I-70 and SR-800. Morristown is located 3 miles east of the wildlife area. The land and acquisition for the area began in 1995 with 14,300 acres being purchased from the Conservation Fund. Ducks Unlimited, The National Wild Turkey Federation, and the Ruffed Grouse Society all partnered with the Division of Wildlife in the purchase and to date approximately 18,011 acres have been acquired. Piedmont Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake, managed by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District is located in the middle of the two land parcels that make up Egypt Valley Wildlife Area.
Fishing in Egypt Valley
Located in the unglaciated region of southeastern Ohio in the low hills belt of the steep Allegheny Plateau, the terrain is steep to rolling and is bisected by numerous small streams. Elevations vary from 925 ft. to 1,363 ft. above sea level. Over the last 70 years, approximately 80 percent of the acreage that comprises Egypt Valley Wildlife Area has been subject to surface mining. The last active mine was completed in 1998. Today all of the forests consist of second and third growth timber. Much of the land that was cleared is now in grassland or brushland and dotted with many small ponds and wetlands. Because of the mining, large expanses of grassland and brushland habitats have been created. Egypt Valley Wildlife Area is popular for hunting, fishing, and other forms of wildlife recreation. Many of the small ponds have been stocked with bass, catfish, and bluegills by the division and offer good fishing. Hiking, bird watching, photography, and sightseeing are also popular on the wildlife area. Species not traditionally found in eastern Ohio such as the short-eared owl, Northern harrier, Henslow's sparrow, and bobolink can be found on the large expanses of grassland. Bald eagles and ospreys occasionally stop on the wildlife area on their annual migration. River otters were reintroduced to this area in 1993 and now a thriving population can be found there.

From Alledonia, continue west on OH-148 for approximately 5 miles. Turn left to continue south onto Belmont County Road 92 for approximately 1.5 miles. Turn left onto Wayne Township Road 804 (Crum Road) and continue on this road for approximately 2 miles. The stop is located on your left at the Raven Rocks trailhead parking area. Originally known as the First Ravine of the Raven Rocks by the early pioneers, it was named after the many ravens that used to nest in the overhanging ledges of the unusual, yet astonishing rock formation. Indians of the Ohio and Captina Creek Valley had left evidence of repeated visits here for over a period of 200 years, where they had set up camp and hunted in the fall and winter months. Hiking Trails
Barkcamp State Park, 65330 Barkcamp Rd., Belmont, Ohio 43718, has four walking trails traversing the 1,005 acre park. A paved trail winds through the Pioneer Village, providing access to the historic barn. Interpretive signs highlighting the culture and history of the area can be found along the trail.
Barnesville Memorial Park, 130 Fair St, Barnesville, Ohio 43713, features a natural trail that leads you around the picturesque 12-acre lake and includes a covered bridge, foot bridge and several challenging hills. A separate trail,the Ray Palmer Nature Trail, also features a bridge over a creek. It is accessible near the main baseball dugouts and near the parking area down by the lake. A paved quarter mile trail is also available at the top of the park.
Dysart Woods, 61961 Dysart Woods Rd., Belmont, is the largest known remnant of the original forest of southeastern Ohio. There are two trails, red and blue. The blue trail is off the parking lot and the red trail is across the gravel drive from the parking lot. Visitors are asked to please stay on the trails to protect the forest.
Biking Trails
Back Road Biking Loop Take a ride on The Ohio Valley Trail Association’s two back road biking loops. The first is an 18.95 mile loop that takes you through Barnesville, Fairview, Hendrysburg, Ollivett and Tacoma. The second loop takes you through Egypt Valley, Bethesda, Belmont and Lafferty. Epworth Park, 211 Virginia St., Bethesda is a unique place to take a relaxing stroll on a paved trail past 61 quaint Victorian cottages nestled among a grove of majestic oak trees. You’ll feel as though you have traveled through time to a simpler place. There is also a paved trail around the lake. Epworth Park is open April 1 through November 1.
National Road Bikeway, St. Clairsville, Ohio 43950, is a 2.5-mile asphalt paved trail that features a gazebo (as a centerpiece to the trail, not next to it) and a tunnel. You can get a bird’s eye view of the trail by climbing a series of stairways that reach a viewing platform atop the National Road tunnel at its northern entrance. There is also a separate nearby nature trail.
Newlin Falls Nature Trail, located in the northeast corner of St. Clairsville Memorial Park (200 Walnut Ave. St. Clairsville, Ohio 43950), is an approximately one mile long, wide, hilly, mulch-lined trail. Features of the trail include two small waterfalls, a new bridge, and plenty of wildlife. The trail is open dawn to dusk and is not suitable for strollers.
Egypt Valley Wildlife Area A popular place for mountain biking, fishing, and hunting, this former strip mined land is situated in both Belmont and Guernsey counties. The primary access through the area is Interstate 70 and State Route 800. Morristown is located three miles east of the wildlife area..
Piedmont Lake, 32281 Marina Rd., Freeport, Ohio 43973-9501. A segment of the 1,250-mile Buckeye Trail runs along one side of Piedmont Lake, which is located in portions of both Belmont and Harrison counties. The largest part of the lake lies in Kirkwood and Flushing Townships of Belmont County. Raven Rocks, 54167-54271 Crum Rd., Beallsville, Ohio 43716 Raven Rocks is a 0.4 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Beallsville, Ohio that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips.
Zion Retreat & RV Park, 334 E. High St., Flushing, Ohio 43977 (main office entrance). Zion Trail is a very scenic, well-kept 1.85 miles around the lake. Several wildlife viewing areas are available for you to take pictures. This is all entwined within a cattle farm where calves and mothers can be seen grazing. The trail is open to the public year-round from dawn to dusk.

Outdoor Recreation in Belmont County
Let’s Go Outside Y
ou have probably heard it before. Going outside can be beneficial to both the mind and body. It is proven to have positive health effects like lowering blood pressure and reduces stress hormones. Not to mention, it enhances creativity and boosts your immune system. This is especially imperative in today’s world. While there are many places one could choose to spend time in the great outdoors and enjoy themselves, Belmont County offers visitors unique and beautiful destinations where they can explore, relax, and take pleasure in the safety of nature. In Belmont County, you will see some of the most spectacular oaks over 400 years old at Dysart Woods Park. This park is a 50 acre tract of old-growth forest and is known as the largest known remaining tract of old growth forest in southeastern Ohio. Here, people come to simply take in the scenery and get some exercise while hiking in the un-touched, deciduous forest. It has been recognized as a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior and is also a part of the Captina Creek Birding Trail, where enthusiasts can discover a variety of bird species along the Captina Creek Watershed. Other stops included in this Trail are the Powhatan Point Marina, Captina Creek Mainstem at Alledonia, Raven Rocks, and South Fork of Captina Creek at Rainbow’s End. Wildlife seekers may also enjoy the Aquatic Trail at Captina Creek. Captina Creek flows into the Ohio River and is home to both big river and stream fishes and macroinvertebrates. Another great place to find wildlife is Egypt Valley Wildlife Area. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has administered this

14,300-acre former mining area to be dedicated to nature and outdoor enthusiasts who can enjoy fishing, hunting, camping, and exploring high walls, backwaters, and historic landmarks. Nearby, only 8 miles away, Barkcamp State Park welcomes visitors to the rich sandstone hills of the Appalachian Plateau where they can enjoy camping, boating, fishing, swimming, picnicking, archery, and horseback riding. Located here is also a Mail Pouch Tobacco barn, painted by famous barn painter, Harley Warrick who painted or retouched over 20,000 Mail Pouch signs for 55 years across 13 states in the Midwest region. If you look close to the barn, you will also notice the Lewis Wetzel Rock, a historical artifact from Lewis Wetzel himself who had carved an inscription in it. Looking for a great outdoor weekend getaway? Zion Retreat & RV Park is in Flushing, Ohio and is ideal for family vacations, staycations, parties, receptions, retreats, picnics and so much more. Reconnect with your loved ones by unplugging and becoming immersed in nature with over 1,000 acres of rolling hills, fields, and ponds. Here you can fish for only $10 a day with no license required. Also offered are boat rentals, aqua ziplining, sand volleyball, a beach area, and luxury or rustic cabin rentals. Youth camps take place in the summer where students of all ages learn about wildlife and conservation through hands-on activities. There are also many other opportunities to go fishing or boating in Belmont County. Tour the famous longhorn cattle at Dickinson Cattle Co. and do not forget to bring your fishing poles. They offer a family fishing program, good for an entire year of fishing for the price of $100 with eight lakes to choose from. Visitors are able to take all bass, blue gill and catfish that they catch and no out of state license is required on private property. Find your favorite spot and bring a blanket for a fun picnic. Our communities have many beautiful local parks in which people can spend the day getting exercise on hiking and biking trails, as well as swimming pools. Epworth Park allows guests to take a step back in time as they stroll through the historic cottages and along a paved trail which surrounds the perimeter of the pond. The Barnesville Memorial Park, Bellaire City Park, Lynn-Hunkler Memorial Park, Martins Ferry Park District, St.Clairsville Memorial Park, Schuler Park, and Powhatan Point Park District are other great places to visit for outdoor recreation. Each park includes shelters, walking areas, and play areas. Cycling enthusiasts are often in awe after riding along the National Road Bikeway in St.Clairsville. This 2.5-mile bike/walking trail was constructed in 1998 and features a large gazebo, tunnels, nature trail, bridge, water stations, and benches. The Ohio Valley Trail Association has recently begun installing signs to mark the

first Back Road Biking Loop in Belmont County. The route will start in Barnesville and extend to Hendrysburg and other biking routes remain in progress. Geocaching is a free outdoor activity in which participants use a GPS system to navigate their way to hidden containers, called “caches.” It began on May 3, 2000 when computer consultant, Dave 32
Ulmer, wanted to test the newest upgrade to public GPS systems by hiding a targeted item in the woods. Originally, it was called the “Great American GPS Stash Hunt.” Later it became known as Geocaching, where people go on a quest to find hidden caches, swap out knick knacks from previous participants, and sign their names in log books. The Belmont County GeoTour has quickly become a regional favorite tour, with thousands of finds from participants within the first year of being launched. Perhaps you are looking for something simpler and relaxing to do. Belmont County has over 20 historical sites and landmarks that people can visit and learn from. We are home to seven museums which offer rich history of not only Belmont County, but of the geographical area. The Belmont County Heritage Museum offers guests the chance to discover the many communities that make up Belmont County while exploring narratives from locals who have expressed their experiences through stories and artifacts. Another way to delve into our roots is by attending community events, such as outdoor community concerts, wellness hikes/activities, or free events hosted by our local libraries. There is always something going on. Every summer, local bands and artists offer live public performances for whomever wishes to attend, with the only requirement being to bring your own lawn chair.
