Washington's Trail 1753
A Historic Driving Trail
In 1753, George Washington headed a diplomatic expedition to order the French to evacuate the Ohio Country – now present-day western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. The journey included Washington’s near drowning and being nearly shot by an Indian guide in today’s Butler County. The French, however, refused to leave, signaling the start of the French and Indian War.
Relive the Butler County portion of this expedition on Washington’s Trail 1753, a drive-it-yourself tour marked by blue road signs with Washington’s silhouette. The trail is commemorative as sections of the actual path are debated, but offers interesting history about this mission.
