THE BREAKFAST TACO TRAIL

A breakfast burrito is any poor attempt at breakfast in a tortilla over Texas I-20. A breakfast taco is a South Texas delicacy, made simply with bacon and egg or chorizo, bean, and egg in a folded tortilla. If you dare use the word burrito for a taco, you will be corrected. Here are seven local spots sure to satisfy your breakfast taco needs.

Dokyo Dauntaun Asian

Classic favorites and innovative creations abound at this Corpus Christi hotspot. DOKYO Dauntaun has quickly become a local favorite, and for good reason. Owner Kil Lee has incorporated the concept of fusing flavors into every aspect of DOKYO, and each menu item – from the sushi and entrees to the specialty crafted and unique cocktails and desserts – is a true work of art.

The beloved pizza sauce and dough recipes at this local staple have remained untouched since opening in 1987. B&J’s Pizza has created a haven for the perfect marriage: pizza and beer. Choose from two locations and enjoy some of the best pizza in town, along with one of their locally-brewed beers. This is truly a must-visit spot for any craft beer lover. (Insider tip: If you’re a garlic lover, The Jack’s Special –both a pizza and wing flavor – is a must-try.)

The Roughian Chef Natalie Trevino

Natalie Trevino, the mastermind behind Corpus Christi’s very own The Roughian, turns culinary practices into a work of art with her passion for conjuring up creative menus and mixing unique flavor profiles for the ultimate dining experience. After creating a reservation only, pop-up dinner service, the locals got to know the bubbly and witty chef and her talent for creating a delicious menu, leading to her rising popularity. Now, The Roughian has expanded into a space of its own - or as Trevino calls it – her “home,” where guests can now attend dinner and brunch events with a curated multi-course meal filled with French and American classics like brisket tartine and cognac gulf shrimp in beurre blanc. The small intimate setting offers comfort with dim lighting, comfortable furniture, and a friendly atmosphere. With a Supper Club on Thursday through Saturday evenings and brunch on Sunday mornings, this new addition to The Roughian’s dining experience is a favorite among the locals.
