When it was known as “Farewell Bend,” it was a village composed of a few makeshift buildings on the banks of the Deschutes River; the last hospitable spot pioneers saw on their epic wagon train journeys west over the Cascade Range. Today, Bend not only remains a hospitable place, it has become the setting of national-scale sporting and recreational events. When it comes to events, take your pick. From triathlons and multisport races, to ski races, running races, mountain bike races, fly-fishing competitions and more, Bend is an athlete’s reward. For the less hardcore athletes, there’s a lazy float down the Deschutes River through Bend’s Old Mill District. Hikers will love the Deschutes River Trail and taking their pooches for some play time at one of several dog parks. If you get too ensnared by Bend’s recreational options, you’ll miss a vibrant cultural scene that’s alive with art galleries, art

walks, a full schedule of outdoor concerts with top musical acts and a lively theater scene. Twelve breweries are behind Bend’s exploding craft beer culture. On any evening out, take in one of the town’s brewpubs and drink in Oregon’s burgeoning “beervana.” Feeling a little more formal, try one of the dozens of white-linen restaurants, or blow back the other way with great eats from a food cart. The rest is easy when you’re staying at a destination resort, a chic urban hotel or a vacation rental in town.

Must see: Tumalo Falls as it tumbles 90 feet to Tumalo Creek. Ten miles west of Bend, the falls are a top destination for hikers, bikers, snowshoers, cross-country skiers and photographers year-round. Must do: Hike the Deschutes River Trail and rendezvous at

Take a small town with a slow pace of life and overlay an ever-expanding creative culture and a long-standing outdoor recreation culture, and you have Sisters. In the shadow of the snow-capped Three Sisters, the town’s artistic vibe is a blend of art galleries, music (Sisters Folk Festival) and crafts (Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show). The outdoor vibe is enhanced with the Peterson Ridge trail system that starts just blocks from the heart of downtown. This dirt is popular with runners, hikers and mountain bikers. There’s hiking and backpacking in the Three Sisters Wilderness, fishing in Whychus Creek and golf at Black Butte Ranch and Aspen Lakes. Plus, three of Oregon's Scenic Bikeways originate from this quaint little town. Dining options include two superb bakeries, a local brewpub and restaurants that appeal to everyone from the French gourmet to the steak-and-potatoes lover.

Metolius Basin

Travelers will find Camp Sherman a tranquil paradise on the banks of the crystal-clear waters of the Metolius River bound by old-growth Pondersosa pines. Today, Camp Sherman is a year-round mecca sought by flyfishermen, hikers and mountain bikers, who have miles of stream to fish and trail to ride and hike. More bustling in nature, the nearby Black Butte Ranch Resort has stood the test of time with two exceptional golf courses and all types of family fun from horseback riding to swimming, hiking and mountain bike riding. Not far from Black Butte Ranch is Suttle Lake, offering an exceptional summer experience. The lake is a playground for sailors and anglers, and has a hiking and mountain biking trail that circles the lake. The Lodge at Suttle Lake offers luxury and rustic cabins along with exceptional dining. A bit farther up the highway is the Hoodoo Ski Area, which has a loyal following among skiers and snowboarders alike. In summer, the area close by the ski resort is dotted with campgrounds and close to some of Oregon’s most treasured hiking— the Pacific Crest Trail.

Must see: The spot where the virginal Metolius River springs from its headwaters and also showcases one of the best views of Mt. Jefferson. Must do: Stay along the banks of the Metolius in a cozy cabin or an elegant country retreat.

Downtown Redmond

The Hub Redmond

Long noted as Central Oregon’s commercial air hub (RDM), Redmond has transformed itself into a rejuvenated town with upscale restaurants, brewpubs, lodging, a bustling farmers market in summer and outdoor ice skating in winter. Add in a few open-air music events and a growing art scene and Redmond is fast undergoing a renaissance. Smith Rock State Park in Terrebonne is a top attraction in Redmond’s backyard. Its umber-colored sheer rock cliffs are known among rock climbers worldwide yet equally known regionally for the hiking and mountain biking trails.

Must see: The Deschutes Rodeo and County Fair or the display of hundreds of flags in Flag City, USA. Must do: Walk Redmond's downtown in winter and go ice skating.

Paulina Lake

Newberry Country La Pine

The Newberry Crater in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument is a must-see for any budding geologist. The caldera is a spectacular shield volcano and what's left when its dome collapsed some time between 500,000 and 2,000 years ago. From its top, you can witness a lot of the makeup of Central Oregon—beautiful lakes (Paulina and East lakes) and large lava fields such as the Big Obsidian Flow. This ocean of lava was used by NASA astronauts in the 1960s as training for what the surface of the moon would be like. Both East Lake and Paulina Lake have small natural hot springs on their banks for public use.

Must see: The craters running with Paulina and East lakes from the summit of Paulina Peak. Must do: Experience La Pine's unique heritage and July 4th festivities at La Pine Frontier Days and Rodeo, or make time in June for Oregon's only Rhubarb Festival.

Smith Rock State Park

River Canyon Country Terrebonne

This tiny hamlet just north of Madras is the gateway to Smith Rock State Park and the birthplace of sport climbing in America. Terrebonne may be small, but many of the world's top climbers have paid her a visit after clipping bolts at Smith Rock. Terrebonne is also a popular spot for some of the best fly-fishing on the Crooked River. This spectacular little place was one of the settings for the 2001 movie, Swordfish, starring John Travolta, Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman. The Terrebonne Depot restaurant, housed in a renovated 100-year-old train station, is another good reason to make your way there.

Must see: The beautiful rock formations at Smith Rock State Park, with climbers far up their faces. Look for slackline walkers at Monkey Face teetering hundreds of feet in the air. Must do: Stop for regional wine tasting at Maragas Winery and Vineyards, then treat yourself to local fare at Terrebonne Depot. Enjoy a scoop of world-famous huckleberry ice cream at Juniper Junction.

Crooked River Ranch

Located above and bound by the steep basalt canyon walls of the Deschutes River, Crooked River Ranch is best known for its golf, hiking, water skiing and fishing. Golfers can take a short—and more exhilarating—shot over the river canyon on one of the course’s signature holes. Everyone should hike out to the Crooked River overlooks and peer hundreds of feet down into the tumbling waters of Steelhead Falls. Anglers will want to flyfish the Foley Waters section of the Deschutes River for native rainbow trout.

Prineville

The most historical town in Central Oregon, Prineville serves as the starting point for fishing trips along the Crooked River or the Prineville and Ochoco reservoirs. Camping, hiking and mountain biking are some of the area’s best in the Ochoco National Forest and Maury Mountains. Take in local history with a visit to the stately Crook County Courthouse, Central Oregon’s oldest public structure. Add in the Crooked River Round Up, the annual rodeo, and you get a sense of what makes Prineville authentic and Western. Fueled by economic growth from its new Facebook and Apple data centers, Prineville is experiencing a renaissance with more places to dine, a new brewpub and choice lodging.

Must see: The winding Crooked River as it flows from Prineville Reservoir into town. Must do: Hit the Crooked River Round Up in June or bring a gambling spirit to the IronHorse Pari-Mutuel Horse Races in July.

The heart and soul of The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Warm Springs offers the brand new Indian Head Casino. For a cultural outtake, go to one of the finest Native American art museums in the West. A short drive north is Kah-Nee-Ta Resort, noted for its warm water swimming pools, spa and blue ribbon fly-fishing. At the end of the day, the amenity-rich Kah-Nee-Ta Resort has many paths to relaxation.

From this Central Oregon hub, outdoor recreation enthusiasts can wade and fish the waters of the Deschutes, Metolius and Crooked rivers, or fish from their boats on Lake Billy Chinook. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s camping on the lake at The Cove Palisades State Park. Close by, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s superb hiking on The Peninsula and The Island in the Crooked River National Grassland. For something completely different, take a drive north and east of Madras to the old mining town of Ashwood, a place where time has stood still.

Must see: The August Airshow of the Cascades with bi-planes, military and vintage models taking to the air. Must do: Spend a weekend on a houseboat at Lake Billy Chinook.

Redsides and rafting are the mainstays of Maupin. Redsides are the brilliantly collections of Native American art and arcolored, hard-fighting native Deschutes River trout that anglers obsess over. Many people think of skiing and Mt. Bachelor when they envision Central Oregon. Those who do are missing at least half of the fun. Summer makes its own fans.

The Deschutes River has always been the lifeblood of Central Oregon and vital to any “must do” list. Taking a refreshing and relaxing innertube float down the Deschutes from Bend’s Farewell Bend Park is required river therapy. The best part of the float—apart from its highly social nature—is the availability of a shuttle bus ride from Drake Park back to Farewell Bend Park to do it all over again. If recreational kayaking, canoeing or stand-up paddling is more to your liking, there are acres of open water with great views out over the mountain and forest landscape in the High Cascades Lakes of the Deschutes National Forest or on Paulina and East lakes in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. For those who fancy lakes with houseboating, water skiing and swimming, there’s Lake Billy Chinook near Madras. There’s also fishing in all the region’s lakes such as Cultus and Davis lakes and reservoirs such as Crane Prairie and Wickiup, and, of course, the Deschutes, Crooked and Metolius rivers. The Deschutes is famous for its native “redside” rainbow trout and its annual steelhead runs. The smaller Metolius River is known for being home to monster bull

trout. Crane Prairie Reservoir, Davis Lake and East Lake are all noted for their trophy trout. On dry land, Central Oregon is the home to more than 200 miles of singletrack mountain bike trails. There’s a wide variety from mellow cruisers for beginners to technical trails requiring expert skills. The singletrack trail network is also well used by trail runners and hikers. The best hiking, however, is in the Three Sisters Wilderness, at Newberry National Volcanic Monument and at Smith Rock State Park—a world-famous rock climbing venue. Climbers now also flock to the basalt columns at Trout Creek Recreation Area close to Madras. Back on pavement, Central Oregon has become a hub for road cycling, with routes fanning out in every direction from Bend. The region also hosts the Cascade Cycling Classic, the longest running road cycling stage-race in the country, now in its thirty-fourth year. Each June, athletes, joined by their families and friends, converge on Central Oregon to take part in the Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival. The Pacific Crest is known as the jewel of multi-sports events in the Northwest and a destina-

In the heart of Central Oregon’s inspirational running country, Sunriver Resort is proud to host the Sunriver Marathon for a Cause. Runners, skiers, bikers and paddlers compete in Bend's festive Pole Pedal Paddle, starting at Mt. Bachelor and finishing in the Old Mill District. With dozens of celebrity-designed golf courses, Central Oregon has become a nationally recognized golf destination. In September, the Pacific Amateur Golf Classic (the largest amateur event in the West) moves daily from one of the area’s 30 courses to

another before the champions emerge on the fourth day at the award-winning Crosswater Club Course. No matter what time of year and what recreation precedes it, the region’s brewpubs are always alive with activity. Brewing craft beer and the publican lifestyle have become a Central Oregon hallmark. Many of the region’s pubs have integrated their indoor space with expansive outdoor dining while offering excellent food, live music and, of course, tasty ales, lagers and stouts. Cheers! To take it all in—brewpubs to golf, hiking, fishing or floating—it can be daunting. Leave the logistics (and driving) to GETIT Shuttle and The Bend Trolley. Both of these transportation boutiques offer tours built around recreation and libations.

When friends visit me and they’re hikers, I take them to Tumalo Falls and up the North Fork Trail. If they’re mountain bikers, we do the Deschutes River or Flagline Trail.

The first of two perfect Central Oregon days begins with an early morning visit to Smith Rock State Park to see the magnificent sheer rock walls and spires come alive with the first rays of the sun. After a hike along the Crooked River, as it flows through the park, there’s lunch on the deck at either the nearby Terrebonne Depot or at the 7th Street Brew House in Redmond. On to Sisters, for a mountain bike ride on the Peterson Day 1 Ridge trail system followed by a variety of dining options before a restful night in a cabin at the nearby eco-resort, FivePine Lodge. Day two starts in Bend with baked goods on the terrace of McKay Cottage, then a round at the stunning Scottish links-style Tetherow Golf Club. If there’s no golfer in your group, head directly to the Old Mill District with its compelling blend of national retailers and local specialty shops. Take lunch outside at Greg’s Grill in the Old Mill and soak in spectacular views of the Cascade Range. If you’re up for a little river zen, take a leisurely innertube Day 2 float or stand-up paddle from Riverbend Park to the heart of town. Downtown has many dining options reached on foot, or make a brewery visit via the CyclePub, a human-powered pedaled pubmobile. Tired and happy, you don’t have far to go to get to downtown’s Oxford Hotel, one of the area’s AAA Four Diamond accommodations.

The 36-mile Twin Bridges Loop, begins in Bend’s downtown Drake Park and follows an engaging hilly course past the city limits into farm and ranch country before crossing the Deschutes River at Twin Bridges Road and starting back. Regular riders of the loop like to stop in the quaint town of Tumalo to dip their tired feet and legs in the Deschutes River, get lunch or sip a latte to power them home. All three of the remaining scenic bikeways are out-and-back routes starting in Sisters. A 70-mile Sisters to Smith Rock route weaves through a rural countryside to Smith Rock State Park and its impressive rock walls. The second McKenzie Pass route of 25 miles takes riders up through deep forests before climbing to the stark volcanic landscape atop the old Mckenzie Pass and the Dee Wright Observatory with views of the Three Sisters volcanic peaks. The third Metolius River Loop route emanates from Sisters and travels through heavily timbered land to the crystal clear waters of the Metolius River in Camp Sherman. After a stop to refresh at the Camp Sherman Store, riders can follow the river to the Wizard Falls fish hatchery before heading back to Sisters for a 32-mile round trip, finishing with a chocolate stout at Three Creeks Brewery.

Local Knowledge David McLay Kidd Course architect David McLay kidd is at the peak of his profession. Golf World magazine called him the, “hottest architect in golf," given the list of course masterpieces he’s designed around the world. Courses such as Laucala Island Golf Club in Fiji, Bandon Dunes on the Oregon Coast, the TPC Stonebrae Course in Northern California and now, the design of the Castle Course at St. Andrews, Scotland. Then there’s his Bend creation, Tetherow, that is attracting players from across the u.S. and abroad. When friends come to visit, I love to take them to Tetherow and golf. As the course designer, my local knowledge is as good or better than our great caddies. If you want to beat me at Tetherow, you'd better bring your ‘A’ game. I also love to take friends out on my boat to Lake Billy Chinook. There, we can wakeboard, use towables, swim and picnic.

What I like best about Central Oregon is that, as a Scotsman who spent years in London, there’s reliably good weather, and it lacks crowds.

The Pacific Amateur Golf Classic Looking for a reason to test your game and sample this bounty of golf? Central Oregon is a winter sports and recreation paradise. Take your pick from thousands of acres of recreational possibilities in the Cascades. Cross-Country Skiing Like your trails groomed for skating and classic crosscountry skiing? Head to the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center, Virginia Meissner Sno-Park or the Hoodoo Ski Area. If, however, you prefer un-groomed skiing on marked trails, then try one of the region’s 14 Sno-Parks. If making your own path through the forest is the order of the day, almost any place that has snow in the Deschutes National Forest is there waiting to be tracked.

Backcountry Skiing Superb and among the most accessible in the country, backcountry skiing is just minutes north and northwest of the Mt. Bachelor Ski Area. A slightly longer haul is required to get into some virginal backcountry runs in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, the Three Sisters volcanic peaks from nearby Sisters and Pine Mountain east of Bend.

Snowmobiling Thanks to the efforts of regional snowmobiling clubs, there are literally hundreds of miles of groomed and well-marked trails to “sled” throughout Central Oregon. Popular take-off spots include the snowmobile parking and shelter area at Wanoga Sno-Park on Century Drive near Bend, Edison Butte on the road between Mt. Bachelor and Sunriver, the Newberry National Volcanic Monument at La Pine and nearby Hoodoo Ski Area outside of Sisters. Another local favorite is to head from Dutchman Flat along Century Drive and out to Elk Lake Resort.

Snowshoeing Wherever there’s snow cover in Central Oregon, there’s an opportunity to snowshoe. Try marked snowshoe routes at Virginia Meissner and Swampy Lakes Sno-Parks off of Century Drive just outside of Bend. These are two main areas where snowshoers can find trails, warming huts and solace in the Deschutes National Forest.

As reps for alpine ski and apparel companies, Ruth Williamson and her husband, Lou Pepper, were known as a dynamic duo. When they moved to Bend in 1996, they brought that dynamism with them. Besides raising a son and a daughter, Ruth has given back to the community through volunteer work, including eight years of elected office as a member of the Bend Metro Park and Recreation District board of directors. In her spare time, she is an active cross-country, alpine and backcountry skier with unbridled enthusiasm for all three disciplines. When friends visit, I ask them how they want to play. If they want big exercise, we might ski the fantastic community ski trails in and around the Virginia Meissner Sno-Park. If they want to tour, we'll start at Dutchman Flat and head west towards Todd Lake for a picnic, or maybe a skin up favorite “secret” slopes. If they want to ski with their dog, we'll head to Wanoga Sno-Park. Of course, if the powder is flying, we'll be at Mt. Bachelor in the trees.

Sledding The place to be for family sledding fun is Wanoga Sno-Park off Century Drive on the way to Mt. Bachelor. There’s ample parking and plenty of room to sled, toboggan or innertube. Bring your own hot chocolate or buy it from the snack trailer in the parking lot. Or head a little farther up to Mt. Bachelor's Snowblast tubing park and snag a day-pass there. In Sunriver, SHARC has its own snow-tubing hill, with three different runs from gentle to bomber fast!

Dog Sledding Regularly scheduled dog sled tours led by qualified guides depart and return to Mt. Bachelor ski area every day when

the resort is open for business. Trail of Dreams, an Iditarod-competing family and their athletic dogs, take guests into parts of the forest many people never get to see. What an amazing way to experience the Central Oregon winter wonderland!

Cascade Perfection

All Around Mt. Bachelor From the day it opened 54 years ago, Mt. Bachelor gained a welldeserved reputation for its deep powder, its long season and the incredible vistas north over the Three Sisters Wilderness, west over the High Cascade Lakes region, south towards Crater Lake and Mt. Shasta beyond and east over the high desert country. Mt. Bachelor quickly became known as a cruiser’s delight—a mountain where almost every acre of terrain could be skied by just about anyone. Over the intervening years, Mt. Bachelor added to its luster by becoming one of America’s first ski areas to welcome snowboarders, embrace telemark skiing, and install high-speed lifts. The resort was also in the forefront of the cross-country ski boom, adding a groomed trail system in the late 1970s. Today Mt. Bachelor is the model of a complete snowsports resort. It offers 360-degree lift-served groomed skiing and riding from its volcanic summit. Get off the groomers and there is plenty of untouched gladed tree skiing over Bachelor's 3,683 acres.

A friendly team of Mountain Ambassadors are available to make you feel welcome and safe on the mountain. If you seek big air and tricks, there are terrain parks for your playground. Good to know that at Mt. Bachelor, kids up to age 12 ski for free (and ride the terrain park) if one of the parents buys a multiday ticket. Kids younger than five ski for free all season. Close to the terrain park is the lift-served Snowblast and Tubing Park where kids of all ages can slide down a groomed runway to their hearts' content and then get pulled back up. There are two base lodges that offer rentals, instruction, as well as first-rate food and beverage service. Up on the hill, Pine Marten Lodge offers a memorable ski-in-ski-out respite during a day on the slopes. Directly across the main parking lot from the tubing park, terrain park and lifts is the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center with 55 kilometers of trails groomed for both skate skiing and classic skiing. From its classic log cabin structure, the Nordic Center offers lessons, rentals and a wood-burning stove to cozy up to for a snack and a hot chocolate.

Hip Hoodoo In many respects, the Hoodoo Ski Area just west of Sisters is a throwback to the days of uncrowded, family-friendly, laid-back ski resorts. Thankfully the resort hasn’t lost that charm even after three high-speed quad lifts, 30 runs and 806 skiable and rideable acres of terrain. Close to the heart of activity, Hoodoo also offers the Easy Rider lift which takes beginning skiers down easy terrain to hone their basic skills. Or hit Hoodoo at night when some of those runs are lit for nocturnal skiers. Anything goes at Hoodoo, including the addition of downhill snowbikes, or bikes on skis, that are available for rent and a different and fun way to make turns in the snow. There’s also the Autobahn, the ultrafun innertubing park at the base of the mountain. Kids can be happy making laps on the Autobahn all day. 48 Hours of Winter Fun It’s a triple play when it comes to the perfect two-day winter stay in Central Oregon— starting and ending with three distinct experiences. Sisters Based out of Sisters, after a pleasant night’s stay at FivePine Lodge, head to one of the town’s renowned bakeries to start the day. If you're staying at Black Butte Ranch, brew up a cup and lay out some pastries in your vacation rental. After that, head to Hoodoo Ski Area to ski, ride or do a little innertubing down these Cascade slopes. After a morning full of downhill runs, head back to Sisters for a late lunch or refreshments at the Three Creeks Brewing Company. If you haven't been able to find time to see the latest movie, head next door to the Sisters Movie

Day two is exploration day. Try lunch at The Lodge at Suttle Lake. Back in town, it’s time to troll the art galleries or hit the winter series of the Sisters Folk Festival, where you can find big acts in an intimate setting.

Lodge. Come evening, Bend has dozens of wonderful dining options like the venerable Pine Tavern near Mirror Pond in the heart of the city. Just as important, the couple loved being near all the restaurants bars and nightlife in downtown Bend. “Big surprise," says Johnson, “this town has a lot of great places to hang out and eat."

Fun for Cycling Fans Come fall, cyclocross racing becomes a big deal in Bend. National events, regional events and events such as the Halloween Cross Crusade are as much fun for spectators and photographers as they are for riders.

“The best part of any fall cyclocross event in Bend is that you get a cycling double," notes Bill Everingham of Boise, Idaho, a competitor in the masters class of cyclocross. "you get to race on the cross course and then hit some of the best mountain bike riding on firm dirt and miles of singletrack when you’re not racing." To position himself for the “double,” Everingham stays at the Seventh Mountain Resort. “From the Resort, it’s a short drive to the races and just a few minutes to be on singletrack trail in the Deschutes National Forest. I also love the get-away-from-it-all feel to the place.”

Eco Retreat Seeing a badge with a name and Sisters as the wearer’s hometown at her college reunion in Connecticut, Alison Vickers remarked, “Oh, that’s the home of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, something on my list of dream to-dos." Skiing the Cascades “There were two things that helped us decide to make Central Oregon the destination of our annual family winter snowsports trip," says kay Merrell of Sacramento, California. “First we wanted a ski resort where my husband and I could ski while the kids could work on their trick skills in the pipe. Secondly, we wanted to stay in a place that was close and had more than typical slope-side offerings.” Mt. Reunion for Everyone When it came time to choose a location for a family reunion, Robyn Luchs selected Sunriver. “I picked Sunriver because it has the space needed to accommodate the 21 family members coming from New Jersey, South Carolina, Indiana and California. A key element in my decision was the range of activities for both the adults and children, and the variety of luxury accommodations to please our diverse family. We rafted, went to the High Desert Museum, played golf, rode horses, bicycled, fished and, of course, went to the waterpark. We even took a trip down to Crater Lake National Park one day. Of all our family reunions, this was the easiest. The ease of getting everyone to Sunriver, the resort’s fine restaurants, its grocery stores, the glorious weather. We hope to do it again, and all the kids are already planning activities for next year’s reunion.”

Fun Family Vacation For Seattleite John Kenyon Ellis vacationing at Black Butte Ranch is like coming home. After all, for 30 years his parents owned a home there. That's where they spent every summer, and most Christmases as well. “It was paradise then and still is,” Ellis says, “I now bring my own young family down to experience what makes Black Butte Ranch so wonderful.” Part of that experience is golf, which he played with his father and brother for many years on both the Glaze and Big Meadow courses. Apart from golf, the Ellis children got in lots of pool time, biked around the seemingly endless trails and made regular visits to Paulina Springs via the boardwalk pathways. There were family hikes around the property, to the top of Black Butte, to the headwaters of the Metolius River, dinners at the Lodge, trips to Sisters that included shopping and gallery visits, great coffee and the annual pilgrimage to Jen's Garden, a world-class restaurant. “There’s something in the air here that makes me slow down and enjoy every minute of the day. It’s special.” Ellis says that the formula for a great time at Black Butte is the same as it always was: “Early golf, lunch, nap, swim, dinner, family games, cool air for a good night's sleep.”

Californian Chelsea Harding knew exactly what she wanted when it came to planning her wedding. “Location was everything," she says. "My future husband and I wanted a rural setting hopefully with a mountain backdrop. Wherever we held the wedding, the location had to be not only spectacular but also easy for all our relatives and friends to come to from across the country.” After an exploratory trip to Central Oregon, Harding found herself in a quandary. “I came looking for a ranch or farm and found all sorts of other spectacular possibilities from destination resorts, to wooded and mountainous places that unexpectedly made my final decision very difficult.” Finding the perfect place for a wedding party’s needs can be challenging in Central Oregon because of the many gorgeous settings—the embarrassment of riches.

An array of museums, public art and music venues bring together the past and the emerging future of Central Oregon's cultural scene. Over the past two decades, Central Oregonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s communities have embraced the arts and made them an integral part of local life as well as an attraction for visitors. A walk through downtown Bend and the Old Mill District during one of the first Fridays of the month says it all. Paintings, sculptures and photography are on display in galleries, retail shops, offices and on sidewalks. Throngs of people turn out no matter what the weather brings. Musicians on the streets and in the shops enhance the festive atmosphere. Art in the High Desert, a juried outdoor art show in August, is also a great local place to see world-class art. Beyond Bendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s First Friday Art Walks, summer and fall street festivals in the region feature fantastic works of art. Notably, the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show has become an internationally famous event, attracting quilt makers from around the globe to show off their works outdoors throughout the town. The quilt show also includes seminars and workshops for quilters. On permanent display in the art scene, The Museum at Warm Springs in the town of the same name features one of the finest collections of Native American art and artifacts in the West. 2013 marks the Museum's 20th Anniversary where

a special exhibit of works by the late Apolonia Susana Santos, accomplished artist and avid activist for the Native Arts, will be displayed in honor of this landmark year. Make this part of any of your Central Oregon cultural itineraries. Focusing on the flora, fauna and pioneer history of Central Oregon, the High Desert Museum south of Bend combines indoor dioramas, outdoor displays featuring birds of prey and live demonstrations of everyday pioneer life. A must-stop for families, the museum is also noted for presenting the best in contemporary landscape painting and photography. Moving from art to music, Central Oregon runs the gamut. For big-concert lovers, the Les Schwab Amphitheater along the Deschutes River in Bend presents national and international acts. The Athletic Club of Bend also showcases top-name acts for its summer series of evening outdoor concerts. Redmond hosts a summer concert series as well, featuring well-established and up-and-coming regional musicians. A quick check of the local media when in Central Oregon reveals a lively music scene at local clubs year-round. Folk music is alive not only at local clubs but at outdoor

Local Knowledge Paul Alan Bennett artist Following graduation from art school in Baltimore, Maryland, Paul Alan Bennett headed to Greece where he made and taught art for six years. That was followed by a stint as an instructor/artist in Portland during which he met his wife-to-be at a conference at Suttle Lake near Sisters. “She was teaching art at Central Oregon Community College, so I decided it would be best for me to move to Sisters to be with her”, says Bennett. Twenty-two years later Bennett remains a teacher and artist known for his sophisticated folk art style much of which is a “personal diary.” When friends visit and either the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show or the Sisters Folk Festival are in progress, we take them there. The center stage of folk music in Central Oregon is the annual Sisters Folk Festival, which deftly combines big-name acts with neophytes to the scene. Held September 6-8, the event features a number of indoor and outdoor venues throughout Sisters. In the classical music genre, mark your calendars for August 4-21 and the Sunriver Music Festival. Within Sunriver Resort's dramatic, giant-log-beamed Great Hall, enjoy classical pops and cover bands of The Beatles. While in Sunriver, take an educational jaunt to the Oregon Observatory and Sunriver Nature Center for constellations and owls. Jazz fans can enjoy the Jazz at The Oxford series that runs fall through spring at the Oxford Hotel in Bend. And there’s the regular Jazz at Joe’s series that takes

Heritage place at Bend’s Community Theater of the Cascades (CTC). When not hosting music events, CTC offers a full schedule of dramas, comedies and musicals. So too with Bend’s Second Street Theater. Offering its own mix of theater, film, music and lectures, the historic Tower Theatre is the crown jewel of downtown Bend. The theater also serves as the host location during the annual BendFilm Festival weekend that celebrates independent film and filmmakers. And as the region’s creative community expands and evolves, so too does its farmers markets. Bend hosts three distinct markets from May until October— one in the heart of downtown, one on

the grounds of St. Charles Medical Center and a third in Bend’s NorthWest Crossing neighborhood. Redmond holds a regular Thursday evening farmers market. All of these markets, taken together, promote Central Oregon’s farm-to-table culture and enhance regional livability. While on an agricultural theme, try Maragas Winery’s old-fashioned annual grape crush in September. Purple hands are the signs of a true vintner. Chef Bette Fraser also offers culinary tours and classes through her Well Traveled Fork enterprise. From art and music to agriculture and farmers markets, Central Oregon is a hopping cultural scene with spectacular scenery.
