We invested $9.7 million in creating a way for floaters, kayakers—and fish—to enjoy a longer stretch of the river with options for mellow or amped-up play. A prime section of the river now has three channels—one for people to standup paddleboard or float all manner of inflatables and pass under a small bridge, another for whitewater kayakers, and a third exclusively for wildlife. When it was known as “Farewell Bend,” it was a village composed of a few makeshift buildings on the banks of the Deschutes River; the last hospitable spot pioneers saw on their epic wagon train journeys west over the Cascade Range. Today, Bend not only remains a hospitable place, it has become the setting of national-scale sporting and recreational events. When it comes to events, take your pick. From triathlons and multisport races, to ski races, running races, mountain bike races, fly-fishing competitions and more, Bend is an athlete’s reward. For the less hardcore athletes, there’s a lazy float down the Deschutes River through Bend’s Old Mill District. Hikers will love the Deschutes River Trail and taking their pooches for some play time at one of several dog parks. Just north of Sisters lies Camp Sherman, a tranquil paradise on the banks of the crystal-clear waters of the Metolius River bound by old-growth ponderosa pines. Today, Camp Sherman is a yearround mecca sought by fly-fishermen, hikers and mountain bikers, who have miles of stream to fish and trail to ride and hike. A prime spot to see is where the virginal Metolius River springs from its headwaters and also showcases one of the best views of Mt. Jefferson. The beloved Metolius will lull you to sleep when you stay along the banks in a cozy cabin or an elegant country retreat. The Newberry Crater in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument is a mustsee for any budding geologist, especially this year, with events around its 25th anniversary as a national monument. The obsidian flows, vents, pumice cones, and hidden pockets of magma continue to fascinate geologists and adventurers. Here you can cross fields of obsidian and climb to the caldera rim. In winter, glide across the snow-covered terrain on cross-country skis or snowmobiles. When this shield volcano’s massive dome collapsed sometime between 2,000 and 500,000 years ago, what remained was the spectacular caldera we see today. From its top, you can witness the volcanic makeup of Central Oregon— beautiful lakes (Paulina and East lakes) and large lava fields such as the Big Obsidian Flow. This ocean of lava was used by NASA astronauts in the 1960s as training for what the surface of the moon would be like. East Lake and Paulina Lake have small natural hot springs on their banks for public use. The area will be a hotbed of family fun this year with re-dedication festivities planned in winter and summer for the 25th anniversary of its monument designation.

This bucolic hamlet just north of Bend is home to one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon, Smith Rock State Park. Many of the world's top climbers come to scale the towering spires, which also offer easy hikes to do with kids. You'll spot climbers as well as golden eagles, prairie falcons and river otters. Terrebonne is also a popular spot for some of the best fly-fishing on the Crooked River. The Terrebonne Depot restaurant, housed in a renovated 100-year-old train station, is another good reason to make your way there.

Crooked River Ranch Located above the steep basalt canyon walls of the Deschutes River, Crooked River Ranch is best known for its golf, hiking, and fishing. Golfers can take a short—and exhilarating—shot over the river canyon on one of the course's signature holes. Everyone should hike out to the Crooked River overlooks and peer hundreds of feet down into the tumbling waters of Steelhead Falls. Anglers will want to fly-fish the Foley Waters section of the Deschutes River for native rainbow trout.

Prineville The most historical town in Central Oregon, Prineville serves as the starting point for fishing trips along the Crooked River or the Prineville and Ochoco reservoirs. Camping, hiking and mountain biking are some of the area's best in the Ochoco National Forest and Maury Mountains. Prineville’s 66-acre Ochoco Wayside State Park has several miles of singletrack mountain biking trails for beginning and intermediate riders. For intermediate to expert riders seeking a true wilderness experience, Lookout Mountain offers 20 miles of some of the best singletrack in Central Oregon. Take in local history with a visit to the stately Crook County Courthouse, Central Oregon's oldest public structure. Add in the Crooked River Roundup and Horse Races, and you get a sense of what makes Prineville authentic and Western. You could do dinner along the river at Red Robin or Anthony's, or try Crux Fermentation Project, another Bend brewpub that's become the “go-to” spot to catch the spectacular Central Oregon sunset over the Cascades with a pint of handcrafted ale.

Day Two is more outdoor fun and adventure, but in a completely different style. After a quick breakfast at FivePine Lodge in Sisters, head to Bend for a round of golf you'll remember forever—even if it's not necessarily for how well you played. The experience at Tetherow will stay with you for its Scottish links layout in Oregon's High Desert. Lunch is at The Row, Tetherow's pub, with local beers, a Northwest and Scottish-inspired menu and great views of the golf course and blue skies framing the landscape for miles. With a sun-drenched afternoon ahead, turn up the adrenaline while cooling down on a guided whitewater trip on the Deschutes River. Choose your level of adventure, from a scenic, three-mile Big Eddy Thriller by Sun Country Tours or a full-day excursion with Ouzel Outfitters. Dry off and head downtown for a wellearned reward, this time at Deschutes Brewery, Bend's oldest brewpub and the one that started the Central Oregon Brewvolution in 1988. For dinner, stroll a block away for modern American cuisine at 900 Wall, in the center of the quaint and historic downtown district filled with restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques and shops, including Cascade Cottons, the perfect spot to pick up a couple of souvenir Bend, Oregon T-shirts. After dinner, no visit downtown is complete without a stop at the boutiques Hot Box Betty and Lost Season Supply. On the short, scenic drive back to Sisters, prepare to get cozy in your cabin with a fireplace and soaking tub for an evening of relaxation (and where you'll no doubt be dreaming of an extended return trip).

An absolute summer must for road cyclists is riding the best of the bestâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;our scenic bikeways. Every rider can find a route to suit their style.

Twin Bridges This 36-mile ride begins in Bend's downtown Drake Park and follows an engaging, moderately hilly course past the city limits into farm and ranch country, rolling through rimrock canyons with views of snowcapped peaks. Cross the Deschutes River at Twin Bridges Road and stop in the quaint town of Tumalo. Dip your feet in the cool, clear water, get lunch or sip a latte before powering home. With no extended climbs, it's a great way to fill your lungs with mountain-fresh air and take in the sublime scenery.

Sisters to Smith Rock This moderate 37-mile route weaves through Sisters country to Smith Rock State Park's impressive rock walls. The Crooked River winds at the base of the volcanic, multicolored formations towering above the valley floor. Watch rock climbers from all over the world tackle thousands of ascent routes. The varied, rolling terrain is generally downhill from Sisters. It is a perfect point-to-point ride if you leave a support vehicle in the public parking areas at each end.

3 McKenzie Pass This challenging 37-mile route winds through deep

forests, climbing to a volcanic lava-rock moonscape summit. This is likely the most interesting and beautiful scenery you'll ever get on a bike ride. Stop at the Dee Wright Observatory, built from lava rock, and take in spectacular views of the Three Sisters mountains. A huge bonus: Most of this ride is on Route 242 (on the U.S. Register of Historic Places), and it's open only to bicycles in early spring, when just enough snow has melted.

Madras Mountain Views This 30-mile loop through High Desert and basalt palisades offers sweeping views of the Cascade Mountains and almost no traffic. Begin and end in small, friendly downtown Madras. Pedal to the stunning overlook above Cove Palisades State Park and Lake Billy Chinook to glimpse eagles and other raptors soaring. Wind through the little towns of Culver and Metolius, stopping for refreshments along lightly trafficked roads. This area's mild winters offer great year-round riding, with sun-drenched days extending throughout winter, spring and fall.

t the start of Phil’s Trail, one of the most popular mountain biking routes in the extensive and renowned network of Bend singletrack heaven, the scene from the parking lot can be misleading. On any given summer morning, families, retirees, visitors with rental bikes, old-school pioneers of the sport and nationally ranked competitors alike will be rolling in. Once you are out on the trail, winding through the forest, however, you might not see another rider. That’s part of the beauty of Central Oregon mountain biking, with more than 300 miles of trails beneath a canopy of ponderosa pines in the foothills of the Cascade mountains. The lower elevation trails cover all the bases: relatively flat, fast and fun, with some tough technical sections and punchy climbs that cater to beginners and shredders alike. Head a little farther up, and you’ll ride in the shadows of snowcapped 10,000-foot peaks through high alpine meadows with

breathtaking vistas. Rustic shelters used as warming huts in the winter are perfect for summer biking rest stops where you can take a breather, have a snack from your pack and enjoy the blissful high mountain scenery. Phil’s Trail is by far the most popular riding area in the region. The trailhead is just a couple of minutes from town and from the parking area, riders can access a well-marked maze of diverse singletrack. If you want the thrills of going downhill but don’t want to do the hard pedaling up, check out the new lift-served downhill trails at Mt. Bachelor. Or, let the folks at Cog Wild Mountain Bike Tours and Shuttles in Bend take you up the Cascade Lakes Highway to trails like “Tiddlywinks” and “Funner.” An epic ride popular in late summer among visitors as well as locals begins with a shuttle that takes you and your bikes to Dutchman Flat, near Mt. Bachelor. After a short, slow climb, you’ll reap the reward of cruising downhill for about 20

Cog Wild will shuttle you from Bend to the McKenzie River Trail just west of Bend, which has been called America’s Number 1 Mountain Bike Trail. In Sisters, the Peterson Ridge Trail System is a local’s favorite and accessible right from town. Smith Rock State Park offers some of the most scenic trails in Central Oregon while the Maston area near Redmond is a favorite winter riding option. Prineville is growing as a mountain biking destination, too. The Round Mountain/Lookout Mountain loop offers 35 miles and nearly 6,000 feet of climbing. hen Tom O’Brien called the Central Oregon Visitors Association last year to get some help planning a golf getaway for himself and some buddies from Nebraska, he was on a mission to see what all the fuss was over Central Oregon golf. He’d seen the stories and photos in national golf publications and had heard of Sunriver and Black Butte Ranch, just two of the golf resorts in a region where 30 courses lie within 45 minutes of each other. His goal? “To have a memorable golfing experience. One where we go home thinking ‘I can’t wait to go back,’” O’Brien said. The Central Oregon golf experience is memorable indeed, whether you spend a week here with your buddies or are just passing through and have time for just one round. For O’Brien and his pals, the experience included setting up shop in the luxurious Tetherow Lodges and squeezing in six rounds in four days. The High Desert that is Central Oregon (the sunny side of the state) has quickly made a name for itself in golf vacation

circles. In fact, the region is home to three of Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public Courses (Pronghorn No. 33, Crosswater No. 51 and Tetherow No. 54.) And Golf Magazine has called it one of the top 25 golf destinations in the world. The attraction? Central Oregon’s collection of courses offer a diversity not found anywhere else – courses designed by some of the game’s greatest architects. Tetherow, David McLay Kidd’s Scottish links masterpiece on Bend’s west side, has been getting rave reviews since it opened in 2008 and was named the nation’s Best New Course You Can Play by Golf Magazine. Set against a backdrop of Cascade mountain peaks, Tetherow would fit right in with Kidd’s more well-known courses along the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Tetherow’s knobs, knolls, fescue and tufts are as scenic as they are potentially penalizing to a scorecard. Sunriver Resort Set to Host PGA Pros National Championsip The eyes of the golf world will be on Sunriver Resort in June 2017, when the Meadows and Crosswater courses host the 50th PGA Professionals National Championship. The tournament will showcase two of Central Oregon’s finest golf courses to the Golf Channel’s audience of about 110 million fans. More than 300 players, the best of the best club pros from across the country, will compete in the week-long event with the top 20 earning a place in the PGA Championship. Both courses are no stranger to big time events. Meadows is the past home to the NCAA Women’s National Championship and Mountain West Conference Championships. Crosswater is the past home of the Champions Tour JELD-WEN Tradition, the 2006 men’s NCAA National Championship and the 2001, 2007 and 2013 PGA Professionals National Championships. Sun+Snow=Smiles It's sunny and snowy all winter here, with legendary powder and an expanse of fun that exists nowhere else. Our winter playground is vast, offering so many ways to play. In the Central Oregon Cascades, every adventure awaits.

cross-country skiing Like your trails groomed for skating and classic cross-country skiing? Head to the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center, Hoodoo Ski Area or the Virginia Meissner SnoPark. If, however, you prefer ungroomed skiing on marked trails, then try one of the region's 14 sno-parks. Or, make your own tracks through the abundant snow throughout the Deschutes National Forest. backcountry skiing Superb and among the most accessible in the country, backcountry skiing is just minutes north and northwest of the Mt. Bachelor Ski Area. A slightly longer haul is required to get into some virginal backcountry runs in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, the Three Sisters volcanic peaks from nearby Sisters and Pine Mountain east of Bend.

Bend, Edison Butte on the road between Mt. Bachelor and Sunriver, the Newberry National Volcanic Monument at La Pine and nearby Hoodoo Ski Area outside of Sisters. Another local favorite is to head from Dutchman Flat along Century Drive and out to Elk Lake Resort.

snowshoeing Try marked snowshoe routes at Virginia Meissner and Swampy Lakes sno-parks off Century Drive just outside of Bend. These are two main areas where snowshoers can find trails, warming huts and solace in the Deschutes National Forest. Join a U.S. Forest Service naturalist at Mt. Bachelor on a free tour to learn about winter ecology and the area’s wildlife and plants.

dogsledding Regularly scheduled dogsled tours led by qualified guides depart and return to Mt. Bachelor ski area every day when the resort is open for business. Oregon Trail of Dreams, owned by an Iditarod-competing family with their athletic dogs, takes guests into parts of the forest many people never get to see. sledding The place to be for family sledding fun is Wanoga Sno-Park off Century Drive on the way to Mt. Bachelor. There's ample parking and plenty of room to sled, toboggan or inner tube. Bring your own hot chocolate or buy it from the snack trailer in the parking lot. Head a little farther up to Mt. Bachelor's Snowblast Tubing Park and snag a daypass for an afternoon of zooming down the mountain on inner tubes. In Sunriver, SHARC has its own snow-tubing hill, and Hoodoo's Autobahn Tubing Park is one of the largest snow-tubing parks in the entire West!

Bachelor added to its luster by becoming one of America's first ski areas to welcome snowboarders, embrace telemark skiing and install high-speed lifts. The resort was also in the forefront of the cross-country ski boom, adding a groomed trail system in the late 1970s. Today Mt. Bachelor is the model of a complete snow-sports resort with 360-degree lift-served groomed skiing and riding from its volcanic summit. Off the groomers, there is plenty of untouched gladed tree skiing over Bachelor's 3,683 acres. It's a cruiser's delight–where nearly every acre of terrain can be skied by just about anyone. New to the mountain and not sure where to ride? A friendly team of Mountain

Ambassadors is there to make you feel welcome and safe on the mountain. (They might even show you a few of their secret powder stashes.) If you seek big air and tricks, the terrain parks are your playground. Good to know that with just a wee bit of planning, kids up to age 12 can ski and ride for free when a parent buys a multiday ticket four or more days in advance. Kids younger than five ski for free all season. Close to the West Village Lodge is the liftserved Snowblast Tubing Park where kids of all ages can zoom down a groomed runway. Two base lodges offer rentals and lessons, as well as first-rate food and beverages. Up on the hill, the Pine Marten Lodge offers a memorable ski-in-ski-out respite during your day on the slopes. Directly across the main parking lot from the tubing park, terrain park and lifts is the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center with 56 kilometers of groomed trails for both skate skiing and classic skiing. With nearly all the runs ending at the main ski bowl near the lodge, it's easy for families and friends to stay together, and the Mountain Cubs area is for ages four to six. Beginners will love Hoodoo's new â&#x20AC;&#x153;1-2-3 and Rent For Freeâ&#x20AC;? program that gives first-timers: three two-hour lessons, three lift tickets and three equipment rentals, followed by free equipment rentals for the rest of the year, all for $149. And everyone can appreciate the easy in-and-out terrain from Hoodoo's spacious, 60,000-squarefoot lodge, close to the chair lifts. Even non-skiers can tap into gravity-fueled

excitement with downhill snowbikes, essentially bikes on skis, and at the Autobahn Tubing Park. One of the largest cable tows in the country takes riders to the top of the hill for more than 800 feet of inner-tubing downhill fun. Another way to enjoy this terrain is on the 19 kilometers of groomed crosscountry ski trails. Hoodoo also offers the most ski-in, ski-out RV hookups in Oregon. Based out of Sisters, after a pleasant night’s stay at FivePine Lodge or in a cozy vacation home from Sisters Vacation Rentals, head to one of the town’s renowned bakeries to start the day. Or if you’re staying at Black Butte Ranch or Best Western Ponderosa Lodge, you may linger over breakfast or head to Cottonwood Cafe, serving traditional breakfasts and lunch favorites. Then head to Hoodoo Ski Area to ski, ride or do a little inner tubing down these Cascade slopes. After a morning full of downhill runs, head back to Sisters for a late lunch or refreshments at the Three Creeks Brewing Company. If you haven’t been able to find time to see the latest movie, head next door to the Sisters Movie House, built inside a big red barn. If you didn’t hit the slopes, there’s always the Sisters Athletic Club and Shibui Spa at FivePine Lodge, a two-minute walk from the theater and brew pub. Day two is exploration day. It begins in Sisters with a relaxed cross-country ski tour on the Peterson Ridge Trail System, a hike around nearby Suttle Lake or an amble along the Metolius River and into Camp Sherman. Try lunch at Black Butte Ranch. Back in town, stroll the art galleries or hit the winter series of the Sisters Folk Festival for big acts in an intimate setting.

If you’re launching from Bend, and staying at DoubleTree, The Riverhouse Hotel or the Hilton Garden Inn, try McKay Cottage, Sparrow Bakery or Rockin’ Daves Bagel Bistro before heading up for a day of skiing. Those wanting to be a bit closer to Mt. Bachelor will find a haven in the woods at Entrada Lodge, just a couple miles from downtown on the way to the ski area. Legs a bit weary and ready to head back from the slopes, stop by the The Row at Tetherow Resort for après ski (try the ghost pepper wings) or head right to town for a brew and a burger at either Deschutes Brewery or Cascade Lakes Brewing Co. Lodge. Come evening, Bend has dozens of wonderful dining options such as The Drake or the venerable Pine Tavern near Mirror Pond in the heart of the city. After dinner, downtown has several music clubs, regular big-time music acts at the Tower Theatre, wine bars and places to simply sit back and relax after a long day on the mountain. Or, an alternative itinerary for Bend would be to start off the day heading up Century Drive for cross-country skiing at one of the designated sno-parks, sledding at Wanoga Sno-Park or dogsledding with Oregon Trail of Dreams at Mt. Bachelor. Back in town, explore the shopping downtown or in the Old Mill District. The dinner fare runs from Kebaba Middle Eastern to 5 Fusion and Sushi Bar, to Pacific Northwest seafood at Anthony’s at the Old Mill. There are top-notch restaurants for every appetite here.

When Kyla and Brandon Sauer visited Bend more than a dozen years ago, the words “upscale” and “boutique” weren't part of the lodging vocabulary. But after a recent stay in the urban-chic Oxford Hotel in the heart of downtown, the Seattle couple's impression of this formerly sleepy logging town was completely revamped. “It was upscale without the stuffiness,” Brandon recalled. “And the location was ideal. During our three days there, we walked everywhere.” They visited during the annual BendFilm Festival in October. The growing independent film event happens at theaters throughout Bend, from intimate downtown venues such as McMenamins Old St. Francis School to the historic Tower Theatre. “We had read a little about the festival and were really impressed by it,” Brandon recalled. “It had an upscale polish worthy of a big-city event but with a rare feeling of authenticity.” They plan to come back in summer and rent a charming little downtown bungalow from Bend Vacation Rentals. “With our own place we can experience Bend like locals and go hiking, biking, float the Deschutes River and walk to great craft brewpubs, restaurants, boutiques and outdoor concerts,” Kyla said.

When Lisa and Ron Akin were looking for lodging in Central Oregon, they chose Tetherow, described online as “your basecamp for adventure.” “That's exactly what we were looking for–a place to set up shop for a few days, close to everything we knew Central Oregon had to offer,” Lisa said. Tapping Into Central Oregon The region's craft breweries, winemakers and artisan distillers offer plenty to toast

ith more than two dozen craft breweries around the area, Bend is officially a beer lover’s destination. Bend is a leader in the number of breweries per capita and the dizzying styles. This trend also inspired a vanguard of craft distillers creating smallbatch bourbon, gin and more spirits, and cideries fermenting Northwest fruit. With all these options, the only real question is where to start and when to stop. Here’s a guide to the musts. brewpubs There's no wrong way to do a tasting tour of Central Oregon's craft scene. While most bars and restaurants have local ales on tap, it's also great to go right to the source. Deschutes Brewery, Bend’s first craft brew pub, is a great place to start. The pub in the heart of downtown has expanded greatly since it opened in 1988 and tours are offered at its nearby brewery. Continue the experience at Bend’s Silver Moon Brewing, which brings an eclectic style to its signature and medalwinning brews such as Get Sum Pale Ale. Bend Brewing Co. is a locals’ favorite, with a patio for summer sipping and a cozy interior for quaffing malty seasonal ales. It’s just a short jaunt to another craft phenom, Crux Fermentation Project, with an indoor-outdoor dining area and a popular patio flanked by a large lawn, a perfect spot for families. Worthy Brewing, on Bend’s east side, is another favorite among locals. A beer garden outside lets you enjoy their artisan pizzas and beers next to crackling fires and twinkling lights.
