THE TURN | SPRING 2021

Load up the golf clubs, a pair of sunglasses and even the work laptop (remote workers welcomed) and head to Black Butte Ranch this spring for a blissful visit like no other. When turning off U.S. Highway 20 and entering the ranch, gaze up to see panoramic views of the Cascades, then gaze down to see the first glimpse of this spectacular ranch retreat, with 1,800 acres of meadows, forest, creeks and—perhaps most importantly—courses to practice the game of golf. A popular getaway destination for the entire Pacific Northwest, Black Butte Ranch is a great place to settle in for a week away, whether it’s spent working remotely, exploring with family or a golfing vacation—solo or with a partner.

THE TURN | SPRING 2021

Filling the itinerary

Whether visiting for a long weekend, a week or longer, make the most out of whatever time is spent at the ranch by penciling in a variety of activities. Afternoons can be spent on either of the ranch’s championship golf courses, Glaze Meadow or Big Meadow. Or, try out an early morning tee-time to take in the pristine views as the sun rises over the mountain peaks. The massive property can be explored through a system of walking, biking and horseback riding trails open to ranch guests; perfect for getting out in nature to clear your mind. Keep an eye out for native wildlife, like deer, eagles and otters. As the weather warms up, check out one of the six pools on the ranch to cool down. Try taking a plunge, or, follow a busy day with the perfect tool to remove stress—an afternoon at the Black Butte Ranch spa. Get comfortable unwinding with a luxurious massage, facial, hand and foot treatements or other spa experiences. Everyone deserves a bit of pampering. When the sun gets low on the horizon and the mountains are painted in twilight, the ranch takes on a magical feel. Spend the last moments of daylight fishing in the nearby Phalorope Lake, or, if you prefer, kick up your feet and uncork a bottle of Oregon wine by any of the ranch’s cozy firepits.

Working virtually is made easy at Black Butte Ranch. Rentals come equipped with fast, reliable wifi, so guests can soak in mountain views while having the best background in the video call. Don’t worry about food, either; the ranch has guests covered with to-go and meal-prep options.

Settling in

Black Butte Ranch is offering special deals for all of 2021. Book a three-night stay on Sunday through Thursday nights and receive a fourth night free. From now through May 13, the ranch will also be offering a special golfing deal. Enjoy a 25 percent discount on golf at both of the ranch’s premier championship courses, if reserved along with lodging. To accommodate for the extended stays many ranch guests are opting for, new and creative dining options have been added. The ranch has begun to offer a wide variety of pre-order, takeout, and even meal-prep dining options so that no matter your schedule or preferences, there is access to fresh delicious foods to fuel each day.

Swing into spring

Avid golfers can pick up a golf punch card, good for two years after purchasing. The buyer and up to three guests can enjoy ten 18-hole rounds or 20 nine-hole rounds for a fixed price. Spring and fall punch cards are available for the quieter months, or opt for a summer punch card to golf throughout the season. Enjoy access to both championship courses on the ranch, the pro shop, driving ranges and access to the brand new putting course, which offers practice and a challenge for even some of the best golfers around. See blackbutteranch.com or give the ranch a call at 866-901-2961 for more information.

SISTERS ITINERARY PLAN A WEEKEND AWAY IN THE CITY OF SISTERS, A CHARMING WESTERN-THEMED TOWN WITH RURAL ROOTS.

tea: suttle tea

Established in 2015, Suttle Tea makes quality, loose-leaf teas with ethically sourced ingredients from small-production farmers. The teas are hand-blended in small batches, with classics in the categories of black and green tea, as well as traditional Japanese matcha or refreshing sweet tea—a perfect drink for a day out exploring downtown Sisters.

play: eurosports

Plan Ahead! Add some of these ideas to the itinerary for your next visit.

Bike shop meets taphouse meets food cart garden at Eurosports, a casual hangout spot with ample outdoor seating and firepits in downtown Sisters. Browse the shop and pick up rental bikes and other gear inside, and then take off for an afternoon ride. Afterwards, grab a beer or cider from inside and head to the front yard to check out the food cart selection. One option is Boone Dog Pizza, serving up tasty, wood-fired specialty pies to enjoy on-site or to go.

coffee: sisters coffee company

For a delicious, hand-crafted pick-me-up, locals know to look no further than Sisters Coffee Company. Founded in 1989 in a small wood cabin, the company became the first coffee roaster in Central Oregon. Since then, they have been reliably serving up some of the best coffee in the state to anyone lucky enough to walk in the door, or find the coffee on local grocery shelves.

food: sisters meat and smokehouse

Old-world methods meet modern ideals in this combined restaurant, butcher-shop and taphouse. Come in and sample fine local beer and cocktails while dining on some of the freshest meat options around. Sandwiches use meat smoked in-house including fresh pastrami, turkey, salami and even tri tip. After dining, pick up ingredients to create your own feast from the deli-counter. Watch this Central Oregon Makers video to go behind the scenes of this gem in Sisters.

PRO TIPS

PREPPING FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON JERREL GROW IS PRONGHORN’S RESIDENT GOLF PRO. AT PRONGHORN, GROW OVERSEES ALL THINGS GOLF, INCLUDING THE HORN PRO GOLF SHOP.

Grow has played in multiple national tournaments and has collected some section wins under his belt. As a veteran golfer, Grow has learned a lot about how to effectively prepare himself to perform at the top of his game.

How does a pro golfer prepare for the upcoming season?

I think one of the most important things you can do to prepare for the upcoming season is to stay sharp. In the winter months I will look for events to go play in. I will travel to winter series events or even go to Florida or Arizona. We all know playing with your buddies is not the same as pegging it in a real event where all your shots count.

Staying fit in the offseason is important, but many new golfers don’t know how to do that. What kind of training/workouts does a golf pro do in the offseason to stay at the top of their game?

I think we have learned from watching the best in the world that there isn’t any one way to do it. Tiger Woods has been known to run 5 miles during a rain delay. Dustin Johnson adds swimming to his routine. Adam Scott surfs. Frank

Stranahan won over 70 tournaments worldwide as a professional and amateur. He gave a lot of his success credit to his time in the gym. I have always preferred to stay active. Riding a mountain bike, skiing, riding a dirt bike, hiking— all the great things that Central Oregon has to offer. That’s my favorite gym.

Imagine you’ve just walked onto the course but you haven’t taken your first drive yet. How do you prepare, both mentally and physically, for that first shot in the short moment before a swing?

I remember a mentor telling me, there are different forms of nerves. It doesn’t always come in the form of butterflies in the stomach. If you aren’t prepared for the first swing—nerves can kick in and you will be less committed to the shot. If you don’t stay sharp as I mentioned before, you will be nervous on the first tee. Just like with a backflip, you have to remain committed throughout the entire action. Envision your first shot and be committed to it.

THE TURN | FALL 2019

ON THE TEE

Q&A WITH MICHAEL DIVEN AT SUNRIVER RESORT MICHAEL DIVEN IS A PRINCIPAL BROKER WITH SUNRIVER REALTY, AND IS ALSO A PROUD MEMBER OF THE SUNRIVER RESORT COMMUNITY.

What drew you to the Sunriver area?

My first visit to Sunriver and Central Oregon was in the early 90s while on a business trip. I fell in love with the place—great scenery with majestic mountains and clear running rivers, sunny comfortable weather, and a lot of outdoor things to do. Soon thereafter my wife and I began to vacation in Sunriver before finally making a permanent move to the area in 2005 from Louisville, Kentucky. We started playing the resort courses in 2006.

What does a golfer have to look forward to in becoming a member?

As members of Crosswater Golf Club, we have access to four fantastic courses: Crosswater, Meadows, Woodlands and Caldera Links, all located within a few miles of each other. It’s fun to rotate through three unique championship courses and mix in the par 3 Caldera Links course. The three championship courses are all very different, beautiful, fun and extremely challenging.

What can you share about the real estate market in Sunriver?

The Sunriver area is a top “Zoom Town” along with being a well-established vacation destination. Shortly after the recession, we had a steady migration of folks primarily from northwest cities moving in the Sunriver area. The pandemic accelerated this trend over the last seven months to a point where we literally ran out of homes to sell in early January. Inventories are slightly better, but not enough to keep pace with the demand, forcing sales prices to skyrocket. We expect home-price appreciation to continue as demands remain constant in our highly desirable market.

Outside of golf, what do you enjoy about the resort?

Sunriver Resort is absolutely a wonderful five-star place to stay. Besides golf, the resort provides an assortment of delicious dining and drinking options, live entertainment, swimming facilities, spa, tennis courts, horseback riding, canoeing, bicycling and many other outdoor activities. Our favorite hotel rooms are the romantic Sunriver River Lodges, and our favorite place to dine at the resort is in the pub at Crosswater Grille.

THE ROW AT TETHEROW

The Row at Tetherow is pub-style, casual, family friendly dining experience. With an expansive view overlooking the Tetherow golf course and many of the Cascade Range peaks, diners can enjoy their meal indoors or under the heated patio while taking in the scenery.

The Bleu Diamond Burger

The Row is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, with 12 beer taps, over 20 bottled/canned beer options and a menu that is inspired by tastes both American and Scottish. Try the signature Bleu Diamond Burger, a half-pound Cascade Natural beef patty served up with fried sweet potato crispies, maple bacon, demi-glace, IPAioli and blue cheese crumbles on a brioche bun. Take the meal to another level by pairing with a local IPA on tap. Special spring offerings include Adventure Meal Packs, which are pre-packed meals, professionally crafted by chefs, that are designed to be taken on outdoor excursions to save on time and energy. Along with these convenient to-go packs, expect to find a special après ski menu featuring nachos, wings and sliders that you can find on your way down from Mt. Bachelor. Along with this casual fare, the après ski menu also features hand-crafted cocktail specials. The après ski menu is available from 2 to 5 p.m. daily, and other similar deals are expected to

be available when the weather warms up to accommodate mountain bikers and hikers. The Row is run by nationally acclaimed chef, Jamar Adams, a graduate from Le Cordon Bleu in Portland, who also spent 13 years serving in the U.S. Army. Although he has only been a professional chef for five years, Adams this spring finished as a top contender in Bon Appetit magazine’s Favorite Chef contest. With leadership like this, guests can expect The Row to serve up quality food and experiences.
