From its rise to capital of Roman Britain and destruction at the hands of Boudica through to the recent gift of modern city status from Queen Elizabeth II, Colchester’s stories come to life on our regular guided tours. Public tours run from Visit Colchester HQ in the city centre most Saturdays throughout the year, and there are regular themed tours that take place at other times. Private tours can be booked at a time of your choosing by getting in touch with the team at Visit Colchester. All Colchester’s official guided tours are run by experienced and fully qualified guides meaning your tour is guaranteed to be well paced, entertaining and most importantly factually accurate! If going it alone is more your style, we have plenty of self-led trails on offer too. Our most popular include the Siege of Colchester, Gates of the Roman Wall, and a Hidden Colchester trail. They are all available to download for free at visitcolchester.com, or copies can be purchased from the Visitor Information Centre if you prefer a paper version. Heading out of the city centre provides an opportunity to explore Colchester’s stunning coast and countryside. Self-guided walking routes available include the popular Wivenhoe Trail along the River Colne, numerous scenic trails across the Dedham Vale and Constable Country, and coastal strolls on the windswept beaches of Mersea Island. Once again, the friendly staff at Visit Colchester HQ can provide you with recommendations, downloads, and paper copies where available.
