Families, football, marriage and musicals in Belgrade’s new Spring Season!
C
oventry’s Belgrade Theatre has announced details of its Spring 2012 season, which features a range of drama, music, comedy and family shows.
Years In Business P
eter Johnson, owner of 17a hair salon is approaching his 25th year of hairdressing in Medieval Spon Street. Over the years the salon has almost doubled in size and has recently introduced a large relaxation area which includes massage chairs, Aveda Treatment Spa and the newly acclaimed Shellac ™ nail manicures. A Shellac manicure is designed for the natural nail client who simply can’t keep polish on for more than a few days, or who ends up marking a fresh manicure because of impatience during the drying process. Shellac is the revolutionary answer for all those customers that want beautiful nails but don’t have the time to maintain them. Shellac offers a perfect finish, tremendous shine, and depth of colour, along with a 14-day wear. The salon now also offers free WIFI to its customers so they can either totally relax in comfortable surroundings, or catch up on all those all-important emails! 17a’s focus has always been, and will always be, a salon which produces high quality hairdressing, using the industry’s best products, whilst keeping pricing competitive.
The season opens with the Belgrade’s production of Nora, which is Ingmar Bergman’s adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, from 28 January to 18 February. This is followed by The Father on the Main Stage from 31 March to 14 April. Both Nora and The Father explore the nature of marriage and family life but from very different perspectives.
Other shows in the season include family musical Swallows and Amazons from 14 to 18 February, hit West End show Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat from 6 to 10 March and awardwinning psychological thriller Equus from 24 to 28 April. The season also sees the return of the Belgrade’s top scoring play, We Love You City from 8 to 26 May to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the year Coventry City FC won the FA Cup Final.
Tickets for all of these shows are available now from the box office on 024 7655 3055 or via www.belgrade.co.uk where cheaper tickets are available.

Coventry City won the FA Cup. ith the long winter nights drawing in, your hair still deserves to shine! Why not sample some of these top celebrity trends to show off your tamed tresses? Whether for the Christmas party or a crisp, brisk trip to the shops, your hair never need be left in the shadows again!
SHAGGY BOB
REBELLIOUS PLAITS
CENTRE PARTING
RAINBOW HUES
This effortless transition from the Sienna Miller, boho look of the last decade is easily wearable and able to work with any look. The ‘shaggy bob’ hairstyle has become ubiquitous among the cool crowd both in the UK and Hollywood, sported by celebs such as Dianna Agron, Alexa Chung and Fearne Cotton. Try this look for a simple yet manageable style which won’t look out of place during those windy and wet mornings. Not ‘too done’ and not too messy, this is an easily accessible style for your move into 2012.
Forget structured braids and think ‘plaits’ this season. Taking the lead from the intricate woven numbers sported by models for Alexander McQueen, plaits are perfect for winter and will give all your outfits a rebellious, youthful edge. The celebs love plaits in every shape and style, so take inspiration from the likes of Selena Gomez and the Olsen twins by mimicking their laid back look which won’t look out of place at the office party.
The likes of tattoo artist Kat Von D have enabled partings to come back in from the side this season and take centre-stage once more. Simple and chic, whether you go for the new wave and wear your curls brushed out like Nicole Richie, blow-dry your hair straight like Sienna or rock full-volume curls like Jennifer Lopez – just don’t forget to part your hair down the centre – you’ll be in good company! Why not use a slick centre-parting as the base of a sophisticated up-do in the evening?
This season, rainbow hair hues are sweeping Tinseltown! Never did we think we’d see Kate Bosworth sporting green hair but there’s no more playing it safe! Grunge goddess Pixie Geldof gets involved with a nonchalant hint of green at the front of her messy locks whilst Rihanna tries a bold and beautiful red. With home grown X Factor star, Cher Lloyd and international sensation Katy Perry trying pink for size, this pop punk look has had the seal of approval from beauty editors.
‘John Frieda Luxurious Volume Thickening Blow Dry Lotion’ works wonders for its amazing thickening results. Still loved by consumers and the beauty elite, the formula has just got better – this fantastic product is essential for your hair care regime, adding extra oomph to your tousled bob. Boots £5.79 (125ml)
With an improved microfine spray system, your rebellious plaits will get a fine mist of hairspray that will always leave your hair sparkling. Pantene’s, ‘Ice Shine Ultimate Hold’ hairspray offers the perfect combination of hold and sparkling ice-like shine every time. Superdrug £3.35 (300ml)
‘Got2b Guardian Angel’ provides defense for your sizzling styles with up to 220°C heat protection. Your hair will be invincible when using hot irons and blow dryers with your very own guardian angel so go ahead and create your centre parting style with ease – be divine and shine! Superdrug £4.05 (200ml)
For a less permanent transformation, ‘Colour Xtreme Hair Art Gel’ gives celebrity and trend inspired looks in a flash, used to recreate hair colour trends with zero commitment ... it is applied in seconds and removed just as quickly with a hair wash! Boots £5.10 (40ml) (each sold separately)

FEATURES | CELEBRITY INTERVIEW
Painting the perfect picture… of George Shaw We took time out to interview one of Coventry’s most unusual and unique artists, George Shaw, who was recently shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2011. Made most famous for his work on highly detailed naturalistic and English suburban subject matter, George attracted significant attention for his personal story with Coventry. From watercolours to growing up in Tile Hill, we get to know the man behind the brush…
Tell us a little about yourself, where you were born, where you grew up? I was born in Walsgrave hospital in 1966 and our first home was a caravan somewhere in Bell Green. After living for some time on Swan Lane we moved to Tile Hill and that’s where I grew up. Who or what inspired you to become the artist you are today? I’m not sure that you can put what inspired me down to one thing or one person. I was fortunate enough to have loving supportive parents who believed in their children and the value of education. My schooling was good and I received generous financial help in the form of grants to go on to further education. It would have been more of a surprise if I’d become a useless drop-out. What’s your favourite piece of work that you have created? I’m not that keen on my own work to be honest. My favourite piece is always the thing I’ve just finished so I can get on with something else. The Goal Mouth, 1999

WIN!
Turn to page 42 for your chance to win an original painting by Turner Prize Nominee George Shaw.
Back of The Club and the bottom of The Steps, 2001
How would you describe your artistic style? A director who can’t make films, a novelist who can’t write, a vocalist who can’t sing. I’m just trying to say something in the only way I can. What can visitors expect from your upcoming exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum? I hope most visitors will feel it was worthwhile leaving their homes and making the effort to come into town. If it sparks off a conversation or a thought or two about themselves or where they come from, or about the sentiment we all experience as time passes or on those things we lose or forget as we go through life then it’s a conversation they are having with me I suppose. I would be happy if I felt that I’d slowed down time for one or two people. I also intend to show a small room of all the works of art I made when I was living in Tile Hill. The earliest piece is a drawing made in the early seventies when I was at primary school and the latest a self portrait made in the summer before I went to art school, a foundation course at the Lanchester Poly in 1985. For many years the bedroom I shared with my brother was, in my pretentious
imagination, an artist’s studio. I still think fondly of the ambitions I had in this adolescent retreat and in many ways I’m quite in awe of the passion and commitment of this young man. This is in some way an act of homage. It is to be called Midland Educational. Many will remember the Midland Educational shop at the top of the arcade in Coventry as the place to get art materials. And quite a few of the pictures have been shown before at the Herbert as part of their frequent exhibitions of children’s art in the early eighties! Where do you like to visit in Coventry during your spare time? I always like a drink in Whitefriars. What are your aspirations for the future? I’d like a holiday! No, I’ve been very fortunate over the last few years that my work has been exhibited and that there has been interest in what I do. I can’t ask for any more than that.
George Shaw’s exciting new exhibition at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum will be the first time a collection of his paintings will be shown in the place they represent. Many viewers of the individual scenes will recognise the various pubs, street corners, and rows of garages, trees, shops as the place they live or lived in. They will see things that they know are no longer there; places they have perhaps forgotten about, places that have fallen to the passing of time or have been rebuilt beyond recognition and there will be those things that have remained. Besides his collection of famous paintings, there will also be a series of recent watercolours. Each watercolour will show a previously painted place as it exists in the here and now. To accompany this exhibition which runs between 18th November 2011 to 11th March 2012 there will also be a chance to see some of the works of art from his life in Tile Hill. Eating Fit
Feeling Fit
Eating well is an important part of maintaining good health, and can help you feel at your best all day long. Your body is by far the most sophisticated piece of equipment you will ever own, fuelling it correctly with a balanced, healthy diet is just as important as keeping active. Why not try to…
Emotional wellbeing can play a big part in determining your overall health status. Stress and its negative effect on your immune system remains the major challenge to good health so why not brave your psychological fitness as well as physical this New Year?
• Eat the right number of calories for how active you are, so that you balance the energy you consume with the energy you use. Eat too much; you’ll put on excess weight. Eat too little and your body will lack all the right minerals. The average man needs around 2,500 calories a day. The average woman needs 2,000 calories. Use this as a scale to determine portions and sizes. • Eat a wide range of foods to ensure that you’re getting a balanced diet and that your body is receiving all the nutrients it needs. • It’s recommended that we eat at least five portions of different types of fruit and veg a day. It’s easier than it sounds. Why not chop a banana over your breakfast cereal, or swap your usual mid-morning snack for some dried fruit? • Fish is a good source of protein and contains many vitamins and minerals. Aim for at least two portions a week, including at least one portion of oily fish. Oily fish is high in omega-3 fats, which may help to prevent heart disease. Dominating the landscape of eastern Sicily is Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano that attracts thousands of tourists every year. Situated between its slopes and the Ionian Sea is the island’s second city, Catania. Damaged by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, Catania is today the result of 18th century rebuilding. As a still relatively unknown tourist destination, Catania is just 100 miles from Africa meaning that autumn temperatures soar to around 25c during the day! The town offers several interesting sights, including two Roman amphitheatres and a 13th century castle. If sandy, beach views are more your thing, the chic resort of Taormina is a picturesque 40 minutes away by train.
