PIXIE CUT

Perfect for blondes, brunettes and red heads alike, Lily Allen’s boyish bob is ideal for a low maintenance, versatile look which will easily carry you through into the autumn months. Adding a softer, dishevelled alternative to the structured bob, this celebrity style is perfect for those with strong features or high cheekbones. Sported by fellow celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley, you’ll be in good company with this fashionable cut.

For a simply natural, low maintenance look this summer, why not try this super sexy, surfer-girl trend fashioned by major celebs such as Alexa Chung, Drew Barrymore and Rachel Bilson. Wearing graduated darker shades through to light is an effective way to rock an anti ageing, fashionable look for the warm months ahead. Soft and feminine, this hair trend is perfect for those looking to add edge to their summer wardrobe.

Braids are a firm favourite of stars such as Pixie Lott, Sienna Miller and Jennifer Anniston. Appearing regularly on the red carpet, teamed with sun kissed, natural waves; braids add a youthful, effortlessly fashionable look to any outfit. Complemented with natural make up and simple accessories, they add an easy yet effective touch to the most effortless styles.

This structured, edgy cut made famous recently by Harry Potter star, Emma Watson best complements soft, feminine features. Low maintenance and bang on trend, this style is suited to those with petite features, adding style plus structure to sharp, summer styles.

Lee Stafford’s ‘Messed Up Spray Wax’ gives the boyish bob a sexy, dishevelled pumped up edge full of natural texture and oomph.

Lily Alone

By Jacqueline Wilson RRP £12.99

Claude in the City By Alex T Smith RRP £4.99

All titles are available to order from WH Smith, Smithford Way Coventry or Waterstone’s located in the precinct cross, Coventry city centre.

‘Claude is no ordinary dog – he leads an extraordinary life! When Mr and Mrs Shinyshoes set off for work, Claude decides what adventure he wants to have that day. Today he and Sir Bobblysock go to the city for the very first time. They have tea in a cafe, go shopping and visit a museum. It is all very normal until...Claude accidentally foils a robbery and becomes the local hero!’

‘Lily isn’t home alone – but she sort of wishes she was; looking after her three younger siblings is a lot of responsibility. When Mum goes off on holiday with her new boyfriend and her step dad fails to show up, Lily is determined to keep the family together and show they can cope without any grown-ups. What could be better than to take all the little ones for a camping adventure in the park? Plenty of space to run about, no carpet to vacuum, and surely no chance anyone will guess they’re there...’ This charming story written by award winning author, Jacqueline Wilson is ideal for girls who love to read. Combining grown up themes with child like adventure, Wilson stirs up emotive, dramatic and gripping narrative certain to keep young teens enthralled.

An Elephant in the Garden By Michael Morpurgo RRP £6.99

Elizabeth and Karli’s mother works at the zoo, where her favourite animal is a young elephant named Marlene. Then the zoo director tells her that the dangerous animals, including the elephants, must be shot before the town is bombed. Unable to give Marlene up, their mother moves her into the back garden to save her and then the bombs start to fall. Their home destroyed, the whole family must flee the bombed-out city and through the perilous, snow-covered landscape, all the while avoiding the Russian troops who are drawing ever closer. It would be hard enough to do, without an elephant in tow! Combining classic adventure with dramatic intrigue, former children’s laureate, Michael Morpurgo writes beautifully to tell the tale of an extraordinary animal caught up in a very human war. Perfect for older children or even adults, this spellbinding story will keep the whole family immersed in suspense.

Delightful, wonderfully original and surprisingly unique this book is suitable for all 5 - 8 year olds. Perfect for competent readers or to read aloud together, Claude is sure to bring a smile to your face over the summer months.

FEATURES | FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

CHANGING A

s Director of City Services and Development at Coventry City Council, Martin Yardley continues to build a better and brighter future for Coventry residents and visitors alike. With work covering areas as diverse as street cleansing and highway maintenance to the implementation of a challenging £9bn regeneration agenda, the next twelve months will be crucial in the build up to the Olympic Games 2012, which sees Coventry proudly participating as a co-host city.

We took time out to discuss some of the more important questions surrounding Coventry’s multi-million pound regeneration…

38 Feel Alive Summer 2011

Places

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS | FEATURES

Which areas of Coventry’s city centre can we expect to see redeveloped within the next two years? Work has just started on the redevelopment of Broadgate. It’s our finest square, much loved by local people and really deserving of the transformation that is now underway. It will be ready in time for us to welcome the world for Olympic football – but that’s not all – we will also have closed two subways to create a better route from the railway station and also de cluttered other parts of town to show off some of the oldest and finest buildings. We have approved a plan for a new £50 million development on the former sorting office site. It will include a new supermarket, student accommodation, heath centre with swimming pool and a better connection into town and on to the Canal Basin – one of Coventry’s best kept secrets. We are also working with our development partner to shape the first proper phase of the central shopping area redevelopment – covering Bull Yard, Shelton Square, City Arcade and the Barracks car park. In light of the new developments, how do you foresee the proposed changes increasing footfall to the city centre? We currently punch well below our weight when it comes to attracting people to shop or enjoy their leisure time here. But we know what local people want – and I believe the developments that are underway now will help us to sell the city to new investors and developers. We don’t want to get rid of anything that works now – but we do need to provide a better range of shops, including the independents and local traders. We are all attracted to places where we can watch other people and we are creating spaces and places that people can enjoy.

How do you intend to entice those from local competing destinations? People that already come here from outside the city end up returning. What we need to do is to shake off the perceptions that are held by people who have never been here. With more Olympic activity taking place here in 2012 than anywhere else outside London and the 50th anniversary of the new Cathedral; lots of people will visit us for the very first time. They are assured of a warm welcome and I hope they will go away with a positive impression. There are 450,000 tickets to sell at the Ricoh and therefore 450,000 chances of getting people to visit the city and come again. How will these changes affect the people of Coventry? I really hope the current changes will help to restore some pride in the people of this fine city. Of all the places I have been, Coventry has a unique and resilient character and the city and its people have proved that they can reinvent themselves. I have no doubt that we will do it again – and that local people will embrace the changes. What can local people expect to see happening within the new space you’ve created within Broadgate? Broadgate is the perfect location for a full range of events – and it has been designed to be flexible enough to accommodate virtually anything. When we asked local people what they would like to see in there – markets and live music were top of the list – so we will definitely put on all of these. But it could just as easily be a beach in the summer, an ice skating rink at Christmas or even the venue for schools events. What effect will the Broadgate developments have upon public transport here in Coventry? Our original plan for Broadgate included a road for buses, but it’s now pedestrians because that’s what local people told us they wanted. The great thing about this city though is that it is compact – most places are walkable so buses won’t be far away. We have also listened carefully to older people and people with mobility issues and by creating a bus hub in Ironmonger Square – we will ensure we get everyone to the top of the hill – with easy access to Broadgate and West Orchards.

How will the proposed changes encourage a thriving night time economy for Coventry city centre? The changes are aimed at making the city centre a more attractive place to visit. We want to encourage more events into the city centre, more quality bars and restaurants boosting the night time economy and making it a safer environment for people to enjoy in the evening. Coventry does have a fantastic cultural ethos and we want to embrace this and provide a city centre that works for everyone. One that we can be proud of day and night. What are Coventry’s future plans for the city centre post 2012? 2012 is set to be a fantastic year and one that sets us up to really make a difference. Developers are already showing an interest and we will be pursuing them hard to invest here and create a better and more thriving city centre for everyone. I also hope by the end of next year – or the beginning of the year after we will be ready to start redeveloping the south side of the city centre with a new and big name retailer. What has been the highlight of your career since arriving in Coventry? I have loved my time at Coventry so far, it’s a city that gets under your skin – in a good way. As for highlights – there have been loads – but probably the best two have been the Severn Trent relocation here – it went through planning in record time, it’s a fantastic new building and its brought more than 1,500 new jobs to the city centre. The second has got to be all the projects we are working on now ready for 2012 – the sporting side of course – but more exciting for me is our work in the city centre which will create a real lasting legacy for local people.

The Frisbee was originally designed as a tin pie plate in the 1870’s. It was a marketing scheme to encourage homemakers to see the name “Frisbee” on the pie tin and think how much easier it would be to buy a pie instead of making one. Every minute of the day, around 900 million tonnes of rain falls on the Earth. Mosquitoes are insects that have been around for 30 million years. They have chemical sensors that can detect mammals from 100 feet away! No matter its size or thickness, no piece of paper can be folded in half more than 7 times.
