Experience the beauty and power of Lake Superior
There are fewer freshwater lakes as beautiful and moving as Lake Superior. One of Douglas County’s finest features, Lake Superior is a source of economic vitality and recreation, and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. The greatest of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior is the world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area. Lake Superior is so vast that if its shoreline was straightened out it would stretch almost 2,800 miles — the distance from New York City to Los Angeles. Its surface area (31,700 square miles or 82,170 square kilometers) is greater than the combined areas of Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. Lake Superior contains 10 percent of all the Earth’s fresh surface water and as much water as all the other Great Lakes combined. But Lake Superior is more than just a whole lot of water — it’s a place to enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, and outdoor recreation. The beauty, power, and vastness of Lake Superior have inspired songwriters, poets, artists, writers, and photographers. Have a stroll along one of our beaches, experience a south shore sunset, wade in the waters and search for lake stones, or just take in the wildlife. The Superior Entry Lighthouse The Superior Entry Lighthouse has stood sentinel over the Superior harbor entrance on Wisconsin Point since 1913. Lakers, ocean-going vessels, and watercraft of all sizes, so close you can almost touch them, are safely guided into the world’s largest inland port—2,432 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. While not open for tours, its red roof and white walls, the rich, royal blue of the icy waters of Lake Superior, and the sapphire sky provide a magnificent photo opportunity.
Wisconsin Point Part of the world’s longest freshwater sandbar, the threemile long unspoiled beauty of Superior’s Wisconsin Point offers visitors a close-up view of the world’s largest body of fresh water — the pristine Lake Superior. Scour the beaches for sea glass or other “treasures,” watch for migrating birds, stop at the Native American burial grounds, walk the rocks to the Superior Entry lighthouse, catch a glimpse of a whitetail deer or a bear, enjoy a long hike along the lakeshore, swim in the chilly waters, spread your picnic blanket and bask in the sun, or simply watch the waves. On the “land” side of the Point, the world’s largest ore docks and grain elevators reflect in the calm waters of Allouez Bay.

Douglas County is home to acres and acres of serene woods, miles of bubbling rivers, and plenty of charming waterfalls. Below is just a short description of each of the natural wonders that can be found in the area. Words can’t do these beautiful places enough justice — you’ll have to visit for yourself to see why countless outdoor enthusiasts flock to our breathtaking natural sites.
Amnicon Falls State Park The Park is an untouched 800-acre quiet oasis for campers, picnickers, hikers, and nature lovers. Stroll along the Amnicon River as it flows over a series of small waterfalls and under one of the last remaining Horton Bowstring Bridges in the world. It has not always been this peaceful. For more than a billion years the forces of nature have combined to produce the Park’s outstanding scenery. Walk on ancient lava beds of dark basalt or the lighter sandstone formed from sand deposited by streams flowing into an ocean that covered much of Wisconsin millions of years ago. dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/amnicon

St. Louis River Freshwater Estuary The St. Louis River, the largest United States tributary to Lake Superior, forms a 23-mile border between Minnesota and Wisconsin. As the river approaches Lake Superior, river and lake water mix in shallow wetlands forming a 12,000-acre freshwater estuary. Easily accessible for fishing, birding, wildlife watching, and boating, it is home to more than 45 native fish species, and 230 bird species, and is a critical migratory stopover during the spring and fall. Deer, beaver, otter, ducks, great blue heron, and sandpipers are among the wildlife that can be seen along its shores.
Pattison State Park
The Bois Brule River
Formed by volcanic eruptions and earthquake movements over the last billion years, the Park is rich in geological history, Native American heritage, and Northern Wisconsin’s past. Before you reach the viewing areas, you can hear the roar of the Black River as it tumbles over 165-foot Big Manitou Falls, the

Presidents Grant, Hoover, Coolidge, Cleveland, and Eisenhower all visited the Brule giving rise to its designation as the “River of Presidents.”

Rugged natural beauty
Brule River State Forest and State Fish Hatchery Famous for canoeing, kayaking, and exceptional trout fishing, the Bois Brule River flows through the 50,000-acre Brule River State Forest. Camping, hiking, swimming, and picnicking are other warm weather activities. Two miles of groomed snowshoe, eight and a half miles of cross-country ski, and thirty-two miles of snowmobile and ATV trails afford winter visitors a peek at the diversity of birds and wildlife and distinct landscapes within its boundaries. The fish hatchery is a unique opportunity to see fish in their life cycles.
Historic Bois Brule and St. Croix River Areas The Historic Bois Brule to St. Croix portage trail is part of the National Register of Historic Landmarks. The portage trail may only be two miles long one way, but it certainly will take you much further back in history. The St. Croix/ Bois Brule Trail is one of the most historically significant and storied rivers of Wisconsin. From it, early Native Americans, traders, and explorers could travel from Lake Superior to the Mississippi River and on. It literally opened the way for expansion from the Great Lakes to the rest of a growing nation. This trail begins at the sign on County Highway A at the North end of Lake St. Croix. Parking is available at the Lake St. Croix picnic area. The entire headwaters area is almost 280 square miles, which includes about 16 square miles of “lake” area. The

headwaters are upstream from the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and includes the St. Croix Flowage in Gordon, an eight-mile segment of the St. Croix River, the Upper St. Croix Lake, the Eau Claire River, and the Eau Claire Lake chain.
Superior Municipal Forest 4,500 lush acres comprise the United States’ second largest municipal forest. Evergreens, birch, and oak trees frame outstanding vistas of Kimball’s Bay, Pokegama Bay, and the St. Louis River. The forest offers 26 kilometers of trails to cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and hikers, plus trails designated for offroad bicycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, and skijoring. The paved Millennium Trail is more than one mile long, perfect for walking, biking, in-line skating, and wheelchairs. An archery course is tucked away in the tall pines, brush, and ravines designed to reflect realistic hunting situations.
Parks and Forests At more than 269,000 acres, the Douglas County Forest is the largest county forest in Wisconsin. With the additional acreage of the Brule River State Forest and Pattison and Amnicon Falls State Parks, 321,000 acres are available for your outdoor recreational use. Scattered around the County are five County-owned day-use parks and three campgrounds. In the City of Superior, there are 19 parks, including a skate park.

One of the very cool things about all of the natural beauty that surrounds Superior and Douglas County is that there is a bounty of activities that go hand in hand with enjoying our rugged outdoors. Whether you like the thrill of catching a beauty of a trout, or would rather take a leisurely hike through the woods, Douglas County offers the kind of outdoor activities that everyone from hunting, fishing, and sports experts to nature novices can enjoy.
Biking Bicycle enthusiasts have a wide selection of riding options. Choose a leisurely spin on the Millennium Trail, a paved 1.6-mile trail winding through the Superior Municipal Forest, or the Osaugie Trail, a five-mile paved recreational trail along the shores of the Superior Bay. Cyclists with a passion for the sleek lines and speed of road riding can cruise along the more than 300 miles of scenic highway in Douglas County that are classified as “Best Conditions for Bicycling.” Feeling more adventurous? Pedal the gravel rail trails of the Wild Rivers Trail or Tri-County Corridor. Weekend Warriors can test their endurance as they navigate the nearly six miles of obstacle-ridden single-track on the Pokegama Trail in the Superior Municipal Forest or Mont du Lac’s single-track mountain bike course, a more than

five-mile course consisting of leg burning climbs and screaming descents and the home of the annual Dirt Spanker Mountain Bike Race.
Birding Bring your binoculars or spotting scopes and focus on any number of our Northland birds, including eagles, osprey, loons, great gray and snowy owls, songbirds, hawks, and countless gulls and terns. During the spring and fall, not wanting to cross the wide waters of Lake Superior, birds concentrate in the thousands as they funnel down the Lake’s shoreline. Each September, birders from around the Midwest gather on Wisconsin Point to view Jaegers, Peregrines, Lapland Longspurs, and Sanderlings as they travel to their winter homes.
Canoeing and Kayaking From a peaceful float on the St Louis River Estuary to an exhilarating trip down the Brule River rapids to a paddle through the frigid waters of Lake Superior along the 400-mile Wisconsin segment of the Lake Superior Water Trail, whitewater and flat-water paddling enthusiasts from beginner to expert will find the perfect waterway in Douglas County. Fishing
Disc golf, sometimes referred to as frisbee golf, is a fun and inexpensive sport that is rapidly growing in popularity. Played with discs of assorted sizes and thicknesses, the year-round game is played with rules similar to golf — players try for the fewest throws into a basket. Whether you are young or not-so-young, this game will be addicting.
Rainbow, Brown, Lake, and Brook Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Bluegills, Crappies, Walleye, Yellow Perch, Lake Sturgeon, and Muskellunge are swimming our waters waiting for you. Cast your line in one of our many rivers and streams, including the Brule, St. Croix, and St. Louis, or one of our 180 inland lakes, including the St. Croix Flowage, Lake Nebagamon, Upper St. Croix Lake, and Whitefish Lake. Or if you would prefer to fish in a larger lake, launch your boat or charter a fishing boat on Lake Superior. Fishing isn’t just for the warm weather months. When cold weather forms ice on our lakes, anglers bundle up and head out for some ice fishing for panfish, walleye, and northern pike.
Douglas County offers three great locations for disc golf. Mont du Lac Recreation Area, home to the Lake Superior Open Disc Golf Tournament, has two cleverly designed “mountain” courses that offer players plenty of challenge as they play amongst the wildlife through trees, shrubbery, deep water, and terrain changes. The Central Park Disc Golf Course, a shorter six-hole course, winds its way through Superior’s Central Park challenging players to navigate the rolling hills, over the creek, and through the trees. Heartwood’s Namekagon National Disc Golf Course offers one nine-hole, par three course and two twelve-hole courses of varying difficulties. Everyone is invited to come play all 33 holes and experience one more great way to get out and enjoy Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Disc rentals are available.

Hiking Stretching 4,600 miles from North Dakota to New York, the North Country National Scenic Trail is the longest hiking path in the United States. Many North Country trailheads are along the more than 31 miles of the trail as it passes through the Douglas County Forest, Brule River State Forest, and Pattison State Park affording a true outdoor experience to hikers. Numerous other hiking trails traverse Douglas County, including the Historic Old Bayfield Road in the Brule River State Forest. Trail maps are available at our Welcome Center.

Rare plants, birds, and animals and significant geological formations are protected in the County’s 18 State Natural Areas. The Belden Swamp, which drains north to Lake Superior and south to the St. Croix River, is one of the most remote areas of the state and will provide you with a memorable hiking adventure.
Horseback Riding The Douglas County Forestry Department maintains approximately 14 miles of horseback riding trails. Additionally, all forest roads and trails that are open for motorized use are open for horseback riding. Maps are available from the Forestry Department at www.douglascountywi.org.
Hunting The Douglas County and Brule River State Forests provide thousands of acres of diverse natural habitats for white-tailed deer, black bear, ducks, turkeys, rabbits, grouse, and squirrels. Miles of hunter walking trails crisscross the forests for the successful hunting trips of hundreds of gun and bow enthusiasts who roam our outdoors.

Discover the towns that make up Douglas County
While Superior is the most populated area of Douglas County, the County is dotted with charming communities that have a personality and feel all their own. Take a cruise through the County and see how many of our towns you can tour! We’re positive that you’ll find something special.
Poplar Located 20 minutes east of Superior on US Highway 2, Poplar lies outside of the “Lake Superior Lake Effect Zone.” Quite often the weather is warmer and the sky is sunnier than in the Twin Ports, letting golfers enjoy a great day of golf at the Poplar Golf Course. Poplar is the boyhood home of the modest Wisconsin farm boy who became a legend — America’s “Ace of Aces” and Medal of Honor winner Richard Ira Bong.
Lake Nebagamon The quaint village of Lake Nebagamon is more than 100 years old and its origin in the logging industry is preserved in its log-constructed auditorium, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Entertainment for the entire family originates at the heart of this community surrounding its 950-acre pristine lake. A free public beach is located in the downtown business district and a public boat launch is just one block away. Free tennis courts are nearby. Gas, groceries, fine dining, fast food, and the oldest Dairy Queen in Wisconsin make this a great place to visit!

Brule Once a timber boomtown, the quiet community of Brule straddles US Highway 2, the multi-use recreational TriCounty Corridor and the internationally known Bois Brule River. As the primary trout spawning bed for western Lake Superior, the Bois Brule River is one of the pre-eminent trout streams in North America, with abundant native and migratory steelhead, brown, and brook trout making Brule the destination for serious fly fishermen from around the world. Brule is also the jumping off spot for canoeing and kayaking on the river and hiking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, ATVing, and snowshoeing in the Brule River State Forest. www.brule-wi.org
Eau Claire Lakes The Eau Claire Lakes area invites you to wade in their waters and wander through their woods! Surrounded by an abundant forest of large pine and hardwood trees, the Eau Claire Chain of Lakes is made up of 11 connected spring-fed, clear water lakes. These lakes make up the headwaters of the Eau Claire River, which flows into the St. Croix River at Gordon and eventually into the Mississippi River. The three larger lakes, Upper Eau Claire, Middle Eau Claire, and the Lower Eau Claire, act as the focal point, with eight smaller spring-fed lakes linked and feeding into them.

Discover the towns that make up Douglas County
Fishing is excellent in the spring and the fall. The lakes support a good population of game fish, including Muskellunge, Northern and Walleye Pike, Small and Largemouth Bass, Crappies, Bluegills, Sunfish, and Perch. Good trout fishing can be enjoyed in the area’s rivers and streams. The lakes are nestled in a heavy forest of large jack, white, and Norway spruce and balsam pine and areas of mixed hardwoods, which makes for excellent and peaceful walks and drives though the countryside. Tri-Lakes Area Amnicon, Dowling and Lyman Lakes are the backbone for sporting fun in the “Tri-Lakes Area.” Amnicon and Dowling Lakes are rated “Class A” Musky Lakes with abundant Walleye and Bass fishing. A fish boil and pig roast in July are just a few of the fun activities sponsored each year by the Tri-Lakes Civic Club.
Solon Springs Situated on beautiful 855-acre Lake St. Croix, Solon Springs is popular for fishing, boating, and water skiing. Several boat landings in the village allow easy access to the lake. Fun for the whole family: Our main attractions
Barker’s Island
Osaugie Waterfront Trail
This man-made island is a recreational focal point on the shores of Lake Superior. The island boasts a festival park, restaurants, a glimpse of the past at the Maritime Museum, mini-golf, a children’s playground, charter fishing, a marina, and lodging. A statue dedicated to the Seamen of the Great Lakes is located in the festival park. Barker’s Island is also a good place to park for a hike or bike along the Osaugie Waterfront Trail.
Meandering along Superior’s waterfront, the 5.2-mile, asphalt-paved trail offers bikers and hikers a view of the world’s largest ore docks, ocean-going ships, birds, deer, and an occasional bear or fox. The Trail passes near the Burlington Northern Ore Dock where the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald took on cargo before sailing into the treacherous November gales in 1975. At the eastern end of the trail, a road route to Wisconsin Point on Lake Superior adds 4.4 miles, or you can continue eastward on the 60-mile, crushed limestone Tri-County Corridor.

Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve The Lake Superior NERR covers nearly 16,700 acres of marshes, uplands, rivers, and Lake Superior shoreline that are part of the St. Louis estuary in Douglas County. Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center Music in the Park is a summer concert series held in the beautiful Lucius Woods Park on an elevation above the sandy beaches of Lake St. Croix. This lush green environment plays a role in setting the tone for a relaxing and memorable experience. Performances are scheduled every Saturday evening at 7 p.m. from the first weekend in July through mid-August. Douglas County is rich with history Whether you’ve got a slight interest or you’re a hardcore history buff, dive deep into Douglas County’s history. Our museums and other historical attractions give visitors the perfect mix of fun and learning.
Fairlawn Mansion Built in 1890 as the family residence of Martin and Grace Pattison and their six children, this Victorian House Museum recalls the gilded age of wealthy industrialists in American history. Martin Pattison made his fortune in the mining and lumber industry. He served three terms as Mayor of Superior and was considered a generous philanthropist in the community. In 1920, after Martin’s death, Grace donated Fairlawn to the Superior Children’s Home and Refuge Society. The mansion served the next 42 years as a place of shelter and care for disadvantaged children and young women, making Fairlawn’s history unique among house museums. Open to the public since 1964, Fairlawn’s main floor and exterior were restored in 1999. Guided tours of the mansion include 14 of the original 42 rooms. The main floor living area and select bedrooms on the second floor are elegantly appointed in the Victorian style, with several original pieces donated from the Pattison family. The large ballroom on the third floor now features two exhibits showcasing the Children’s Home era, and presenting significant steps in the restoration of the mansion. Today, Fairlawn also serves as host to favorite community events such as the Ice Cream Social and Holiday Sampler & Wine Tasting. The site is also available for private rental, hosting weddings, anniversary and birthday parties, dinners, luncheons, teas, murder mysteries and much more. S.S. Meteor Maritime Museum The S.S. Meteor, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the last remaining of the innovative ships (called whalebacks for their rounded hulls) designed by Captain Alexander McDougall. Launched from Superior in 1896, she carried a variety of cargos on the Great Lakes, including iron ore, grain, cars, and oil. In 1972, she was brought home to Superior and is now permanently berthed on Barkers Island. Hear the ship’s whistle and see the original 1896 steam engine as you tour from pilothouse to cargo holds. A World of Accordions Museum and Harrington ARTS Center If you think “polka” when you hear the word accordion, you are in for a surprise! Housed in a stately old church of majestic brick and stained-glass windows is the internationally renowned A World of Accordions Museum. Gordon-Wascott Historical Museum & Depot Explore our area and its ties with the railroad, lumber era and early settlers. Originally a storehouse for the supplies and furs of trader Antoine Gordon, founder of the Town of Gordon, the museum displays the collections of the Historical Society of photos, government records, personal narratives and items from the area’s past. Solon Springs Historical Museum Moved from the country to its current site, the John Beck Log Home has been restored with turn-of-the-century furnishings and houses old ledgers and maps, photos of Solon Springs (ca. 1900), logging photos, family photos and other artifacts.
The Davidson Windmill and The Eskolin Log House Completed in 1904, Jacob Davidson had hand-hewn all the gears, shafts, building frame and shingles for a windmill from the local woods. The rumble of the grinding stones is permanently silent, but the windmill still stands to remind us of the lives lived closer to the earth and to one another. The Eskolin Finnish Log House represents the region’s early Finnish construction with its complex, dovetailed joints. In 2006, the house was moved to the windmill grounds as an interpretive facility.

Celebrating all things Solon Springs and summertime, this annual event features town and village-wide garage sales, baked goods sales, entertainment, arts and crafts vendors, a parade, and — of course — fireworks.
Each spring, several of the neighboring first nations from northern Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan come together at UWS to host this large powwow. Powwows are a Native American gathering and social event that allows for celebration, dancing, and socializing. The powwow includes two Grand Entries, several different hosted drums, a variety of themed dances and feast. There will be music, dancing, games for the children, plus vendors with handmade jewelry, candies and more. Grand Entries at 1 and 7 p.m. with a traditional feast at 5 p.m.

Superior Night — arguably the most fun night of The Homegrown Music Festival — is when local musicians get to shine throughout Superior establishments. The Homegrown Music Festival is the annual showcase of Twin Ports musicians. What began as a simple birthday party with a handful of bands is now in its 16th year, and is run by a volunteer steering committee and a board of directors.
