Beaches & Waterfront

Erie is the perfect place for a relaxing lake escape. The refreshing waters and world-class sunsets set the scene for spending a lazy sun-soaked day at the beach or an evening dining experience along Erie’s spectacular waterfront.

Beaches

Erie’s top attraction is also the most visited state park in Pennsylvania: Presque Isle State Park. Designated as a National Natural Landmark, Presque Isle is a 3,200-acre peninsula that curves into Lake Erie and features seven miles of sandy beaches and the only surf swimming in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The beaches of Presque Isle are great for sunbathing, cooling off on a hot summer’s day, building sandcastles, catching up on some reading, digging for beach glass, or peaceful reflection time among nature’s beauty. Presque Isle’s beaches are open year-round and are also popular spots for kite fl ying, picnicking, fishing, and birding.

• Beach 6 – Large beach with eight sand volleyball courts and concessions

• Waterworks Beach 7 and Pettinato Beach 8 – features ADA accessible ramps to the water’s edge/beach wheelchairs available

• Beach 11 – the shallowest beach, perfect for families with young children

• Sunset Point beach – kite fl ying and watching, perfect for a romantic proposal or stellar sunsets

Swimming is permitted from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day at the park’s guarded beaches.

Erie’s Bayfront

Nestled between Downtown Erie and Presque Isle Bay, Erie’s Bayfront is one of the area’s most active districts with its waterfront restaurants, scenic boat tours, luxurious hotels, and the iconic Bicentennial Tower. Amusement and Water Parks

Treat the family to a day at Waldameer Park and Water World where slides, rides, midway games, concessions, and entertainment are set among beautifully landscaped grounds and picnic groves. In this pay-to-play park, parking and admission are free! Cool off on Water World’s thrilling new attraction set to open in summer 2023, the Rocket Blast Water Coaster, a speedy, watery ride complete with dizzying hills, downhill stretches, and water jets.

No matter what the weather outside, it’s always a balmy 84 degrees inside the Polynesian-themed Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park Resort. Conveniently connected to three nationally recognized hotels, a restaurant and a boutique bowling alley, Splash Lagoon is your tropical home away from home, with a cool water park as your backyard! The centerpiece Tree House was upgraded in 2022 and is a splishsplashing playground for everyone.

Challenge your family to a friendly go kart race or a round of miniature golf at the Erie Sports Center Fun Park, which was fully renovated and opened in 2022. The warmer weather provides the perfect backdrop for an afternoon spent scaling a steep climbing wall, perfecting your serve on the sand

Forget about watching the game on a jumbo screen and sitting in the nosebleed section, the intimate design of UPMC Ballpark and Erie Insurance Arena allows fans to have the best seats in the house, no matter where you sit! Fishing the Waters of Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay

Fish from shore or stream, bring your boat, or hire a charter. Northwest Pennsylvania is one of the country’s greatest angling destinations. Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay and the surrounding creeks, streams, tributaries, and ponds are great places for fishing.

Lake Erie is one of the nation’s top walleye fisheries, ranking #1 in 2019 Field & Stream Magazine’s “10 Best Fall Walleye Hot Spots”. Anglers troll for walleye and schools of perch during the summer months while lake trout can be found in early spring deep waters or late fall shallows. Lake Erie tributaries

are teeming with steelhead in the spring and late fall, and if casting a line in smaller pond areas, panfish and bass are likely catches. The sheltered environments of Presque Isle State Park and Presque Isle Bay provide great opportunities to snag pike and muskellunge. Other fish species found in Lake Erie/Presque Isle Bay waters include smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappies, and inland pike.

Erie County is one of the only places in Pennsylvania to fl y fish for steelhead trout in the tributary streams and offers extremely diversified fl y-fishing opportunities when it comes to waterways and fish species. The shallow flats of Presque Isle Bay attract large numbers of panfish and smallmouth bass from mid-May to late June for spawning. In winter, the waters of Presque Isle Bay freeze, providing an ideal location for ice fishing. The top fish targets for ice fishermen include yellow perch, northern pike, walleye, and the occasional steelhead.

For anglers that don’t have their own boat or choose not to bring their own, the Erie area has several expert fishing charters conveniently located along the foot of State Street that are ready to take guests out on Lake Erie for a fun and hopefully productive adventure.

Erie is also a prime destination for fishing tournaments. Anglers have traveled to Erie from around the country to compete in tournaments hosted by B.A.S.S. Nation, Kayak Anglers, Keystone Bass Buddies, The Bass Federation, Kayak Bass Fishing, American Bass Anglers, and more.

When you travel to Erie’s shores, bring your good boy or good girl with you!

One of the top spots that will guarantee a hearty tail wag is Presque Isle State Park. Presque Isle is Erie’s top attraction for beaches and outdoor recreation, and a great place to let your leashed pup splash around and explore! Pets are allowed on the unguarded beaches that are not marked as designated swimming areas and must be on leashes no longer than six feet. Don’t forget to help keep the park clean and pick up after your pet, too! At guarded beaches, leashed dogs are permitted along the tree line area only.

In addition to the sandy beaches, the 13.5-mile-long Karl Boys Multi-Purpose Paved Trail is a popular place for walking your dog. The trail follows the entire perimeter of Presque Isle State Park with scenic views of Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie throughout. In addition to the trails, pets are welcome in all picnic areas. Many local restaurants also invite well-behaved, leashed dogs to share the experience of a good meal and a great atmosphere.

Re-Introducing… Erie’s Historic Warner Theatre

Commissioned in 1929 by the famous Warner Brothers, the doors of the Warner Theatre opened for the first time on April 10, 1931 to a sold out crowd. The Warner has been entertaining in grand fashion for more than 90 years. During the course of its existence, the Warner has been an all-encompassing performance venue, hosting Broadway musicals, Erie Philharmonic performances, special events, lectures, concerts and festivals. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Warner was originally built as a movie house. It is one of the few Warner Brother’s theatres left in the country still in its original form and is a shining example of an ornate Art Deco and French Renaissance-style theater.

Many artists have graced the Warner’s stage over the years including Bob Hope who made an appearance during the Warner’s inaugural vaudeville season in November 1931. While here, Bob regaled the crowd with anecdotal stories all while sitting downstage on a barrel.

On January 8, 2022, after many years of renovations and restorations, this majestic building reopened to a dazzled and awestruck crowd, ready to take on the next century in glorious fashion. The Warner is now a worldclass performing arts center while still maintaining the original feel of a historic Warner Theater movie house. The extensive multi-million dollar project included many facility

enhancements allowing for great improvements to the onstage space and acoustics. Interior and exterior upgrades were capped off with the reconstruction and lighting of the original State Street marquee featuring nearly seven thousand lights and some of the original stained glass elements of the canopy.

Sip Your Way across Lake Erie Wine Country

The largest grape growing region in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains begins in Erie County, Pennsylvania. The Tale of the Trail

Erie County and the surrounding region is home to more than 15 microbreweries that make up the Lake Erie Ale Trail. Each brewery refines its beer from simple ingredients, mixed with a passion for the art and personable twists that give each beer a unique flavor profile with an ever-expanding assortment of styles and funky names such as Apparition Amber Ale, Keyboard Warrior, Couch Sniper and Lawn Mower Lager. Enjoy a pint with friends or a growler to-go. All Lake Erie Ale Trail breweries are open year-round.

Get in the Spirit

Erie County is home to several exceptional craft distilleries that create high quality spirits using a combination of traditional and innovative techniques of fermenting, distilling, blending and infusing. Sit a spell and savor single malt whiskey finished in a Spanish sherry cask, a potent shot of apple pie moonshine or a classic snifter of brandy.

Just off the Bayfront Hwy between Presque Isle and the Bicentennial Tower lies the city of Erie’s first craft distillery since prohibition. Newly opened in 2019, the area’s favorite distillery boasts awardwinning small-batch vodka, rums, gin and aged-whiskeys. Here, customers are welcome to taste the spirits before they buy. And if you’re lucky enough to visit when one of the owners is around, you may be offered a tour as well, or you can contact the distillery in advance to schedule one.

Altered State Distillery is open every evening M-F beginning at 3 pm, Saturday at noon, and hosts the area’s best local and regional bands every Friday and Saturday night from 7-10. While there is no formal lunch or dinner menu, their small food-pairing menu is available from open to close, and in the evening hours they are often host to some of the city’s favorite local food trucks. History & Heritage

Erie’s history is filled with rich cultures and long-standing traditions. Step back in time aboard a historic tall ship, learn about Erie’s proudest historical moments or get a birds-eyeview from atop a remarkable lighthouse and experience Erie’s historical attractions.

The Story of Us

Unveiled in fall 2022, The Story of Us is the Hagen History Center’s newest exhibit. It is a showcase of the area’s native people and how they built Erie County. The permanent display is made up of 2D and 3D photographs as well as items from campus archives and curatorial collections. The space was designed to provide a greater understanding of Erie County’s immigration and history as it follows the path of Erie’s indigenous people from the early residents of the land to present day. The “Coming to Erie” area explores the tales of immigrants and their families while “Erie at Work” illustrates how residents made a living through various professions such as farming, lumbering and education. Many businesses are highlighted here including Marx Toys and Griswold Manufacturing.

Erie’s Maritime Roots

From floor to ceiling, the Erie Maritime Museum illustrates the captivating story of Erie’s maritime history and heritage. Through its various displays, the museum details the War of 1812 narrative, civilian activity, innovation, military service, and Pennsylvania’s contributions to the maritime industry and stewardship of the Great Lakes. The museum’s centerpiece exhibit is the U.S. Brig Niagara, a floating maritime museum and active sailing vessel. During the warmer months, the Niagara along with the Schooner Lettie G. Howard are

available for day and sunset sails. Erie is also home to three historic lighthouses: the Presque Isle Lighthouse, The North Pier Light and the Erie Land Lighthouse. All three are available to view from the outside year-round. Guided tours of the Presque Isle Lighthouse, including its observation deck, are held Memorial Day to Labor Day.
