Welcome
www.visitexeter.com Exeter is one of the most vibrant, attractive and historically fascinating cities in England. Pre-dating the arrival of the Romans in AD 50, the city’s history is rich and long. This is reflected in its absorbing visitor attractions including its mysterious Underground Passages, free Red Coat Guided Tours, magnificent cathedral, Roman wall and historic quayside. Exeter is also home to the awardwinning Royal Albert Memorial Museum where visitors can explore the city’s 2,000-year history under one roof. Exeter has a great mix of shops. The city’s sense of individuality is reflected in its large range of independent specialist shops and boutiques offering unique one-of-a-kind items. Exeter has even launched its own local currency, the Exeter Pound which can be spent in many businesses across Exeter, all of which are independent and local. The city is also home to many well known High Street brands. Exeter is firmly on the map as one of the foodie capitals of the South West. The city’s location in the Heart of Devon makes it a melting pot for top chefs to create gastronomic delights with ingredients harvested from the surrounding coast and countryside.

EXETER’S QUAYSIDE 29
www.visitexeter.com
Exeter’s Quayside Exeter’s Quayside is one of the most attractive areas of the city. The city’s wealth from the woollen cloth trade, which reached its peak in the mid 18th century, is evident in the historic buildings here, including warehouses built to house cloth and imported goods such as olive oil, wine and salt cod, which are now home to an eclectic mix of retailers including antiques, home furnishings, beautifully crafted jewellery, unusual gifts, local crafts and water sports equipment. The Quayside is a hub of activity, from wellsignposted walking and cycling trails to the south west’s largest multi-million pound outdoor education centre. It is also the ideal place to find something good to eat, with cafés, pubs and restaurants lining the river.

We’re giving Exeter back its Great Western Railway.
We recognise that this railway is bigger than any company. So FirstGroup have taken an unprecedented step for any brand in any industry. We’ve removed ourselves from the livery. With this comes the commitment to not act as a franchise. But rather, as a proud custodian, whose responsibility it is to reinvigorate the west by returning the rail service to its former glory.
