SET THE SAILS AND HEAD FOR THE SOUTH FYN ARCHIPELAGO Experience the South Fyn Archipelago once, and it will have a special place in your heart forever. It is one of the most scenic regions in Denmark and the one that best illustrates the country’s maritime history. The archipelago is the world’s largest flooded ice-age landscape. The unique hilly scenery of the 55 islands and islets was formed in the Stone Age, when the area was flooded, creating the breathtaking views from the hilltops of South Fyn.
Bring your bike, and you will never be far from unspoiled beaches, idyllic village ponds, and quaint seaside towns. The towns of Faaborg and Svendborg are characterised by their harbours. For centuries, large wooden ships have been built in Svendborg, and yachters from all over the world visit in large numbers. In Faaborg, two wide jetties make it possible to take a swim in the fjord only 100 m from the town centre.
Travelling the archipelago feels as if you are on an expedition, when the islands appear one by one like scenic gems in the shallow blue sea.
Take a trip to South Fyn and discover coastal Denmark at its most vibrant all year around.
THE LORD SPEAKS FUNISH WITH HIS ANGELS ON SUNDAYS
Even if you don’t speak Danish, you can always try speaking Funish, the regional dialect of Fyn. Here is a mini phrase book to introduce you to our lovely language.
FYN’S FAVOURITE CAKE A particularly important Funish word to know is ‘brunsviger’ – the local cake specialty with a topping of melted brown sugar. If the full word is too difficult to pronounce, shorten it to ‘brunner’ – so do the locals. Or try asking for a ‘runner med brunner’, which is half a buttered breakfast roll with a piece of ‘brunsviger’ on top. To illustrate our love for this pastry, we even have a Day of the Brunsviger.
4
FUNISH – EVEN FOR DANES, IT’S A FOREIGN LANGUAGE With its soft d’s and melodious dialect, Funish has many great phrases and expressions. Read on if you have a ‘kojn’ to spare, that is ‘a moment’. This is eight essential Funish expressions:
Dee vee Jette I don’t know.
Aller Never.
Retti Right or Really. ’Retti sjåu’ means ‘really funny’.
Utidi You are ’utidig’, when you are too silly or inappropriate to be taken seriously.
Leifig When something is ’leifig’, it’s good, nice, or fine.
Hunni i skovi On Fyn, we like to end our words with an i. So the word for dog, ’hund’ (the d is silent), becomes ’hunni’, and ‘skov’ (forest) becomes ‘skovi’.
Ik’osda Use this phrase after sentences in place of ‘isn’t it’ or ‘right’.
Ra’nok Use as a modifier to express that you are impressed. ‘That is ra’nok a large piece of brunsviger.’ Far’veller. See you!

ISLAND HOP TILL YOU DROP Hop on the ferry in Svendborg or Faaborg and experience the calm and serenity of the archipelago islands. Each island has its own unique history and scenery, though they also have some things in common: splendid coastal nature and islanders eager to give you a warm welcome. Take the ferry from Svendborg to Skarø, Drejø, and Hjortø, which is home
to only a handful of permanent residents. Bjørnø, Lyø, and Avernakø are reached by ferry from Faaborg. In the summertime, extra ferries enable you to hop from one island to the next without setting foot on the ’continent’ of Fyn.
THE ARCHIPELAGO ’Det Sydfynske Øhav’ is the Danish name for the shallow waters south of Fyn and the archipelago comprising more than 55 island and islets The South Fyn Archipelago is the world’s largest flooded ice-age landscape. The area was flooded during the Stone Age, which created the islands’ unique hilly terrain The ice-age landscape stretches from Helnæs Bay west of Faaborg, across the ’Alps’ of South Fyn, and to the small fishing village of Lundeborg on the east coast From South Fyn, the archipelago stretches south, with Langeland and Ærø being the southernmost islands. In total, the area spans more than 480 sq. km 6
HOW TO HOP FROM ISLAND TO ISLAND Go island hopping for one day or a whole week – for the same price. Tickets can be used for up to seven days and for all ferries. Get your ticket at ø-hop.dk
7
SKARØ This small island is known for its beautiful scenery and interesting bird and animal life, though the passionate islanders have done their part as well to put Skarø firmly on the map: Skarø has a music festival held each year in August, an ice-cream manufacturer selling ice-cream all over the world, a summer café with its own smokehouse, an apothecary garden, and lots more in addition to all the scenic sights. The island, half an hour’s ferry trip from Svendborg, has several accommodation options. Get your ferry tickets at hoejestene.dk Read more about Skarø at visitsvendborg.dk
DREJØ Bring your bikes when you go to Drejø. From the eastern ferry berth, there are only 4 km to the island’s westernmost point, a cliff offering a spectacular view of the archipelago. The trip takes you past Drejet, a narrow isthmus with water on both sides. On the north coast, the old harbour of Gammel Havn is a charming sight, and Bækkil destrand on the south coast is the best place to go for a swim. Drejø has a grocery store, a local museum, a café, and farm shops selling local produce. The island is one hour and 15 minutes from Svendborg by ferry and offers several options for accommodation. Get your ferry tickets at hoejestene.dk Read more about Drejø at visitsvendborg.dk 8
AVERNAKØ Avernakø is a special island, as it originally consisted of two islands – Avernak and Korshavn – which, in 1937, were connected by a dam called ‘Drejet’. The island has a rich birdlife, lovely beaches and lots of open space. Only 100 islanders live on Avernakø, and they all jointly own the island’s grocery store. There are plenty of accommodation options on the island, which takes about an hour to reach by ferry from Faaborg. Get your ferry tickets at oefaergen.fmk.dk Read more about Avernakø at visitfaaborg.dk
LYØ Located south-west of Faaborg, Lyø is the westernmost island of the archipelago. Lyø’s greatest attractions are its peace and quiet, its clean air and beautiful scenery as well as the old village with its many half-timbered houses. The island’s farms are located around the village ponds in the historic town, which is considered one of Denmark’s most interesting village communities. From Faaborg, it takes 35 minutes to reach Lyø, where you can find several accommo dation options. Get your ferry tickets at oefaergen.fmk.dk Read more about Lyø at visitfaaborg.dk
9
HJORTØ With only four permanent residents, Hjortø is among the least-populated islands in Denmark. Hjortø’s diverse nature is often visited by flocks of migrating birds, amongst them the majestic sea eagle and the small wren. The islanders have spotted more than 100 different bird species on Hjortø. If you love the outdoors, Hjortø is the perfect choice. You can spend the night in a shelter or put up your own tent. Hjortø is an hour away from Svendborg by ferry. Get your ferry tickets at havn.svendborg.dk Read more about Hjortø at visitsvendborg.dk
BJØRNØ Bjørnø is first mentioned in the 13th cen tury, then spelled Byørnø, meaning the island inhabited by bears. Don’t worry, though, there haven’t been any bear sightings lately… Cars are not allowed on Bjørnø, and bikes are not recommended either, but you can walk around the island in a couple of hours. The island has plenty to offer – flat beach meadows, a rich birdlife, and tall cliffs with spectacular views of Fyn and the neighbouring islands. In summer, islanders and visitors enjoy their evening coffee together on the waterfront, watching the sunset over Faaborg and Svanninge Hills on Fyn. There are plenty of accommodation options on Bjørnø, which takes 17 minutes to reach by ferry from Faaborg. Get your ferry tickets at Bjørnøfærgen, Kanalvej 24, 5600 Faaborg Read more about Bjørnø at visitfaaborg.dk

SVELMØ This uninhabited hidden treasure is owned by two families, who rent out Svelmø’s houses as holiday homes. You can’t reach Svelmø by ferry, only via the low-tide road from the road ‘Østergyden’ between Nab and Nakkebølle on Fyn. To reach Svelmø, you then have to wade about 500 m with water up to your knees. The trip can be made in a more comfortable manner, though, in the back of a tractor. On Thursdays throughout summer, you can go on a guided tractor tour with local Svelmø expert, Jan. Once you have reached Svelmø, the guided tour continues on foot. The 3/4-hour trip ends with a dinner of grilled fish and locally sourced potatoes served on the beach. Read more about Svelmø at visitfaaboorg.dk
GEOPARK The South Fyn Archipelago wants to put itself on the world map by achieving the prestigious title of UNESCO Global Geopark. In 2018, the four municipalities covering South Fyn, in co-operation with Naturturisme I/S, took the first important step by officially establishing ‘Geopark Det Sydfynske Øhav’, thus creating the geopark set to become a UNESCO Global Geopark. What qualifies South Fyn and the archi pelago as a UNESCO Global Geopark is the area’s geological significance. The South Fyn Archipelago is the world’s largest flooded iceage landscape. Other examples of the area’s unique geology are Damestenen in Hesselager (Denmark’s largest erratic boulder), Egebjerg Hills near Svendborg, Ristinge Cliff on Langeland, and Svanninge Hills near Faaborg. SHIVER MY TIMBERS Every year, thousands of beautiful boats visit the harbours of South Fyn, including many historical sailing ships. But can you tell the different types apart? Just look at the rigging, i.e. the masts, booms, ropes, etc. These living pieces of maritime cultural history can be divided into five classical types.
THE ARCHIPELAGO’S BIG FIVE Schooners have two or three masts with a special rigging. It can be a two-masted vessel, with the front mast shorter than the aftmost, or a three-masted gaff-rigged vessel. Yacht is the classic name for a one-masted gaff-rigged vessel. Galeas is a two-masted gaff-rigged vessel, distinguished by the front mast being taller than the aftmost. Top-sail schooner is a schooner with two square sails on the front mast. Topgallant schooner is a schooner with three square sails on the front mast.
A SAIL IS NOT SIMPLY A SAIL Gaff rig means that the largest sail is being held up by a small boom called a gaff. This means that the sail is square. Bermuda rig is a tall, pointed, triangular main sail. Modern sailing ships don’t have gaffs and thus have triangular sails.
GO TO SEA Go onboard the schooner Meta and take a trip to one of the islands or watch the sun set over the stunning archipelago. For more information, go to visitsvendborg.dk

Exactly where the name Svendborg comes from is unknown, but the most probable explanation is that the town was called ‘Svin-borg’ (Swine Castle) because of the wild boars in the forests and the porpoises found in the strait (‘marsvin’ in Danish, literally translated: ‘Sea pig’). The town was first mentioned in 1229 in a royal letter, and today, Svendborg is the second-largest city on Fyn.
18
SVENDBORG – CAPITAL OF THE ARCHIPELAGO Svendborg is known for easy living, and that’s why the town was the first in Denmark to become part of the international network of Cittaslow cities, focusing on creating the perfect conditions for the good life. Throughout the centuries, Svendborg has been an important regional port, and the proud traditions live on to this day. The heart and soul of the town remains the harbour, which is just a short walk from the town centre. Majestic old wooden ships from all over Europe still head for the Ring-Andersen shipyard, an internationally
Along with the many boat guilds and yacht clubs, this gives Svendborg an authentic maritime atmosphere like no other in Denmark. In addition to its world-class harbour community and spectacular nature, Svendborg is also one of the most charming shopping towns in Denmark. Take a stroll down the paved streets and tiny alleys and discover specialty stores, galleries, and quirky shops of all kinds. Or go to a concert or a show on one of Svendborg’s many stages – there’s always something going on.

SVENDBORG – A TASTE OF THE GOOD LIFE Svendborg is perhaps best known for its maritime community, but the town has lots of interesting cultural sights and culinary experiences for you to explore.
SVENDBORG HAS IT ALL With the town centre and harbour located so close to each other, Svendborg is a unique and charming place to go shopping. Exciting experiences await on every street corner, in small specialty stores, artisanal shops, and cosy cafés. And every Saturday is market day at the town square. Start your shopping tour at Havnepladsen by the harbour and go up Brogade and Sankt Peder Stræde towards the town centre. Continue on Gerritsgade, which is closed for traffic, before going down the main shopping street, Møllergade – and remember to enjoy the view of the busy marina from the Harbour Stairs.
GO SHOPPING IN MØLLERGADE Møllergade is not only the town’s longest shopping street – it is the very essence of Svendborg! This is where you find funny oddities, great food, and lively creativity; there are music shops and one of Svendborg’s best concert venues; there are galleries, arts and crafts shops, and quirky boutiques. Once a year, the shopkeepers, gallery owners, and restaurant managers organise ’The World’s Friendliest Street Party’. From Møllergade, you can go down the Harbour Stairs connecting the town centre with the harbour.
EXPLORE THE LATIN QUARTER Svendborg has its own latin quarter, located close to the harbour. A small guide to the charming shops, eateries, and workshops in Svendborg’s oldest neighbourhood is published every year. This is the place to go for the shopper who loves to go exploring in secret back alleys. Get the guide at the Tourist Office, Havnepladsen 2.
21
SVENDBORG – FULL OF LIFE AND LEGENDS There are plenty of things to do and see in and around Svendborg, and they each have their own story to tell.
22
FREDERIKSØ AND THE DANISH YACHTING MUSEUM The shipyard Svendborg Værft – located on the island of Frederiksø – was once one of the town’s largest companies. And though the shipyard closed down long ago, the halls and workshops remain. The old engine test shop now serves as a concert venue and beach bar, and elsewhere on Frederiksø, art galleries, designers and small start-ups occupy the old buildings. Another settler on Frederiksø is The Danish Yachting Museum. Along the wharf, you can play mini golf and pétanque or enjoy a picnic basket while soaking in Frederiksø’s unique mix of commerce and culture.
EGEBJERG MILL – DENMARK’S FIRST NATURE OBSERVATORY Egebjerg Mølle Naturrum is open around the clock throughout the year. Visit during the day to take in the stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the archipelago, or visit at night to enjoy the starry night sky through the glass prism.
THE DANISH WELFARE MUSEUM – AN AUTHENTIC POORHOUSE EXPERIENCE A museum experience like no other. From the moment you step through the gates of the former poorhouse, you are surrounded by walls and barbed wire. A journey through time and shifting attitudes and ideals.
TAASINGE MUSEUM – THE LEGEND OF ELVIRA MADIGAN Tåsinge’s museum of local history has a memorial room commemorating the tragic love story between tightrope artist Elvira Madigan and aristocrat Sixten Sparre, who took their own lives in Tåsinge’s Nørreskoven forest. Another sight to see on Tåsinge is the 400-year-old Ambrosius Oak located by the road Nørreskovvej. The oak tree was named after poet Ambrosius Stub who according to legend enjoyed writing his poetry there.
NATURAMA – NATURAL HISTORY TOLD IN NEW WAYS Come face to face with moose, musk oxen, birds, and whale skeletons in Naturama’s natural theatre. The museum’s interactive exhibition allows you to get close to the animals – try petting a bear and hear the roar of the red deer. For more information, go to visitsvendborg.dk

SOUTH FYN’S WATER WORLD The South Fyn Archipelago is a playground for outdoors people who thrive in the water. For divers, surfers, kayakers, and under water hunters, the archipelago is pure paradise.
EXTRAORDINARY DIVING SPOTS There are no fewer than 22 diving spots across the archipelago, spanning fascinating wreck dives and challenging drift dives. One of the most stunning dives is the old ferry M/F Ærøsund, which hit the seabed in 2014 after a controlled scuttling. Another cool wreck dive is the four German torpedo boats, scuttled by the Germans themselves in May 1945. They are now located on the seabed just off the coast of Valdemar’s Castle on Tåsinge. For the snorkelers, we recommend Denmark’s secret Atlantis, the remains of a flooded Stone Age community on the seabed. Read more about the many diving spots at dyk-sydfyn.dk
RIDE THE WAVE Take off and float across the water! The coasts of South Fyn and the archipelago face in all different directions, so you can always find a great spot to windsurf or kitesurf, regardless of wind direction.
GO ISLAND HOPPING IN YOUR KAYAK Enjoy the serenity of the South Fyn Archipelago from a sea kayak. The calm and narrow waters and the wealth of small islands make the archipelago a popular destination for kayakers. The ’Sea Kayak Guidebook’ with trip suggestions can be purchased at the tourist offices in Svendborg and Faaborg. For more information, go to visitsvendborg.dk and visitfaaborg.dk
27
GET A SEA TROUT ON THE HOOK The South Fyn Archipelago is well-known for its unique fishing conditions. Anglers are hauling in large, silvery sea trouts in great numbers, and you can also catch mackerel, garfish, codfish, pollock, and flatfish. Due to the short distances, it is easy to find a different fishing spot when the weather changes.
28
Remember to buy your fishing license at the tourist offices at Svendborg or Faaborg. The guidebook ’117 Fine Fishing Spots’ can also be purchased there as well as at visitsvendborg.dk and visitfaaborg.dk.
HARPOON HUNTING BELOW THE SURFACE Put your wet suit and flippers on and glide silently through the water armed with a harpoon. Skilled underwater hun ters can catch flatfish, sea trout, codfish, and mullet.
29
FAABORG – THE GATE TO THE ARCHIPELAGO One of Denmark’s oldest market towns, Faaborg is nestled between the hills of Svanninge Bakker and the South Fyn Archipelago. Faaborg is incredibly picturesque, with roses climbing up the old houses in the narrow cobblestone streets. The old merchant’s houses have been preserved, as
30
has the old bell tower – the town’s landmark. The small market town has always attracted artists from near and far and still has a vibrant cultural scene. The waterfront is also teeming with activity. Take a ferry to one of the archipelago islands, go on a yachting or kayaking trip, or take a swim in the fjord at Faaborg Havnebad.
Faaborg is first mentioned in 1229, when the Danish king Valdemar the Victorious gave the town to his Portuguese daughter-in-law, princess Eleanor, as a wedding gift. Back then, the town was known as Foburgh – which according to experts means The Fox’ Castle.
31
FAABORG IS JUST A STEP AWAY Accompany the watchman on his evening round or explore the town on your own.
FOLLOW THE NIGHT WATCHMAN In 1592, the first night watchman did his rounds in the streets of Faaborg. The watchman’s task was to keep order at night and sound the alarm in case of fire. The tradition was revived in 1995, and so, every evening during summer, the watchman sets off on his round at 9pm from the bell tower.
EXPLORE FAABORG AT YOUR OWN PACE With the combined map and guide ‘Walk through the town’, you have a local historian in your back pocket. The booklet can be purchased at the tourist office and at visitfaaborg.dk.
A TOWN WITHIN A TOWN Faaborg Miniby is a historically correct 1:10-scale version of Faaborg in the year of 1890. Take a stroll through the miniature town of 150-plus houses, all built according to original architectural drawings and with authentic building materials – an exact copy, down to the smallest detail.
32
33
SMALL TOWN – GREAT EXPERIENCES A single day can be enough to experience Faaborg – the market town, which was one of Fyn’s most important ports in the 18th century. If you stay a few more days, however, you will have time to enjoy the splendid scenery and visit all the sights.
FAABORG MUSEUM – A WORK OF ART IN ITSELF Faaborg Musem is quite extraordinary. It is constructed specifically for the artworks of the Fyn Painters (a group of local artists around 1900) and comprises painting, sculpture, architecture and furniture design. The museum is an architectural gem in itself, and one of the most significant buildings of Danish neo-classicism. Call ahead to book a guided tour in English.
34
THE JAILHOUSE – COME IN AND BREAK OUT! The former jailhouse is bound to get you thinking. How does it feel when the door slams shut and you find yourself behind bars? A visit at the jailhouse is a great learning experience, for both kids and adults. You will learn about prisons past and present – and about your own attitudes towards justice and punishment.
KALEKO MILL How did we process grain 100 years ago? Find out at Kaleko Mill, which is the oldest preserved water mill for processing grain in Denmark. There is a special vibe to the thatched and half-timbered mill, making you feel as though you have travelled back in time.
TAKE THE VINTAGE TRAIN Experience a train ride out of the 1950s aboard the vintage train from Den Syd Fyenske Veteranjernbane. During the half-hour trip from Faaborg to Korinth, you can enjoy the views of the lovely South Fyn landscape and the archipelago.
THE BELL TOWER – FAABORG’S LANDMARK The bell tower is Faaborg’s best-known landmark. After the Reformation in 1536, the Church of St. Nicholas was torn down, and only the bell tower was left standing. The view from atop the tower, overlooking the town’s red roofs, Svanninge Hills, and the South Fyn Archipelago, is simply magnificent. The saying goes that a true child of Faaborg will never move so far away as to lose sight of the bell tower.
A PIECE OF JAPAN ON FYN The Japanese Gardens outside Faaborg is landscape gardening at its finest. Take a relaxing walk through six themed gardens laid out according to old Japanese traditions. Marvel at the carefully sculpted bushes and trees and their reflections in the lakes and streams. TAKE A HIKE ON THE WILD SIDE Put one foot in front of the other, and return home with renewed strength. Hiking is more popular than ever – perhaps because it enables your mind to wander as well as your feet. Some parts of The Archipelago Trail follow the coastline while others take you through inland hill

DISCOVER FYN’S HISTORICAL CASTLES The impressive and picturesque Egeskov Castle is the most well-preserved renaissance moat castle in Europe – and the most popular tourist attraction on Fyn. Within a radius of 40 km, many other estates rise above the landscape – Brahetrolleborg, Broholm Castle, Holstenshuus, Valdemar’s Castle, Hesselagergård, and Hvedholm Castle, among others.
38
Fyn has a total of 123 castles and manor houses – a large proportion of which are located on South Fyn – and several of them are open for visitors. The large estates offer a variety of experiences for nature lovers, history geeks, gourmets, and those with a penchant for waking up in a canopy bed within the solid walls of a castle.
EGESKOV CASTLE
– The Living Castle on Fyn The 460-year-old Egeskov Castle is not only home to count Ahlefeldt and his family, but is also a museum. Explore the impressive collection of classic cars, get lost in the labyrinth, or go tree-top walking. In late May, the castle grounds serve as venue for Heartland Festival. For more information, go to egeskov.dk
OTHER INTERESTING CASTLES ON SOUTH FYN VALDEMAR’S CASTLE – family-owned for 12 generations
BROHOLM CASTLE
– large collection of stone-age artifacts
BRAHETROLLEBORG
- spectacular rhododendron garden
HOLSTENSHUUS
– beautiful baroque garden
SOUTH FYN ON HORSEBACK Riderute Sydfyn is one of the longest and most scenic riding trails in Denmark – 75 km over the hills of Svanninge Bakker, through the state forests around Sollerup and past large manor houses and open fields. The estates of Brahetrolleborg, Holstenshuus and Steensgaard on South Fyn have allowed access to their properties on a number of riding trails. For more information about riding maps, trip suggestions, horse-friendly B&B’s and camp sites (also known as ’hay hotels’), go to visitfaaborg.dk

SOUTH FYN – INSPIRING ART We could write a whole book about art on South Fyn and the archipelago. Artists have always been attrac ted to the region because of the scenery and the special light, and in the early 20th century, the Fyn Painters put South Fyn firmly on the art map.
42
Today, creative souls are prospering on South Fyn. There are sculptures on many a street corner and small shops with glassware, ceramics, and various artisanal and one-of-a-kind objects. In Faaborg and Svendborg, galleries, museums, and churches present all kinds of art and exhibitions.
SVENDBORG – AN ABUNDANCE OF ART GALLERIES In Svendborg, there’s not far from one art gallery to the next. Among the town’s exhibition spaces are SAK, Galleri DGV, Galleri No. 44, Galleri Q, Galleriet, and Galleri Jaan, all exhibiting works of local as well as internationally acclaimed artists – and there’s even more galleries just outside Svendborg. The town is also known for its active music community, and each year in late August, Svendborg hosts the SVEND film festival. For more information, go to visitsvendborg.dk
FAABORG – A MAGNET FOR ARTISTS Throughout the years, many artists have chosen to settle in Faaborg. Especially Bøjestræde in the old part of town has a vibrant art community with galleries, workshops and boutiques selling glassware, ceramics, jewelry, and paintings. Among the interesting shops there are the GaleRiget gallery and the ceramist Ulf Nielsen. Konservesgården is located next to Faaborg Musem and has changing exhibitions. Artists may borrow the historical Levins hus to exhibit their own artworks. For more information and an online guide to culture in Faaborg, go to visitfaaborg.dk
THE FYN PAINTERS In the late 1880s, an artist’s community based in Faaborg and Kerteminde on Northern Fyn was formed. Fritz Syberg, Peter Hansen, and Anna Syberg (née Hansen) were central figures in the community. They were all originally from Faaborg and returned home after completing their artistic education in Copenhagen. Also among the group’s core members were Alhed and Johannes Larsen from Kerteminde. The Fyn Painters were called ’peasant painters’ and ’clog painters’ because their paintings were inspired by nature and rural life rather than the hustle and bustle of the big city. Several of the Fyn Painters’ well-known paintings are at Faaborg Museum, which was constructed specifically for their artworks. 43
SOUTH FYN – TASTES DELICIOUS Fyn is known as Denmark’s orchard. Throw away an apple core, and a new tree will sprout right away – or so the saying goes. The fertile Funish soil is the origin of many of the food products sold in Denmark. On South Fyn, you won’t have to drive far to pass a roadside vegetable stall or a farm shop, and local food producers make excellent cheese, meat, chocolate, candy, ice-cream, juice, honey, flour, and rapeseed oil. Many of these products end up being served at Denmark’s finest restaurants.
44
The tourist offices in Svendborg and Faaborg will be glad to direct you on a culinary road trip. Kulinarisk Sydfyn Each year in June, the largest food market in the Nordics, Kulinarisk Sydfyn, fills the streets of Svendborg with the best of slow food, organic food, and local products. The enthusiastic exhibitors will offer you plenty of samples while telling the stories behind their products.
Rygeost
TWO LOCAL ORIGINALS Rygeost It is said that this special type of smoked fresh cheese is the only Danish cheese invented without any inspiration from abroad. ‘Rygeost’ originates from Fyn and can be traced back to the Viking Age. Brunsviger – Fyn’s national dish This cake is absolutely saturated with melted brown sugar. Even though there are many different recipes out there, Fyn is the only place you can get the real deal. Locals like to call it a ‘brunner’.

THE SPIRITS OF SOUTH FYN The breweries, vineyards, and distilleries in the hilly South Fyn countryside – the Tuscany of Denmark – invite you in for a taste of their spirits.

SVENDBORGSUND BRYGHUS
Ø-BRYG
KUNSTBRYGGERIET FAR & SØN
This modern microbrewery is located in a converted auto shop on Tåsinge. Here, Svendborgsund Bryghus produces and sells organic beer and lemonade as well as other local specialties.
All Ø-bryg’s different beers are crea ted and tested thoroughly on Thurø. The recipe is based on the brewmaster’s own ingredients – and lots of love. Everytime the brewmaster passes the yeast tank, he gives it a gentle pat. The brewery shop also sells local specialties and imported beer.
This artisanal brewery, founded by a father-and-son duo, resides in a rustic rear building behind an old townhouse in Svendborg and specialises in hand-brewed beer and other quality drinks. They do a lot of experiments, so expect the unexpected when you drop by.
SKAARUPØRE VINGAARD
SVENDBORG VINGAARD
KIMESBJERGGAARD VINGAARD
Skaarupøre Vingaard produces organic white wine, rosé, and sparkling grape and apple wine following the champagne method, as well as dessert wines following the port wine method. The two thatched ‘wine casks’ next to the wine fields serve as farm shop and tasting room.
Svendborg Vingaard oozes Mediterranean charm. Walking among the 2,300 vines in the wine fields, you can easily imagine being under a different sky. The vineyard produces white wine, dessert wines following the port wine method, and a number of different fruit wines. In the spring, the birch trees are tapped for the popular sparkling wine, Birkebobler, which is produced following the champagne method.
Kimesbjerggaard produces red wine, white wine, and rosé, all made with great care and a nice blend of grapes – there’s something for every taste bud. The vineyard also has a farm shop presenting a small selection of handicraft products as well as snacks that pair well with wine.

AQUA VITAE SYDFYN
MOSGAARD
Aqua Vitae Sydfyn is so renowned among the culinary elite that gourmet restaurants, such as Noma in Copenhagen and Falsled Kro on Fyn, have their own spirits produced here. The distillery has a wide assortment of spirits, including an award-winning apple apĂŠritif, and is the first Danish distillery to be approved for the production of organic spirits.
Located in a charming farmhouse overlooking the sea, this organic whisky and gin distillery has received wide acclaim for its gin, and the distillers are constantly working on developing new exciting tastes. CARLOS KITSCH’N
STELLA MARIS
RESTAURANT RESUMÉ
At Carlos Kitsch’n, all members of staff have a criminal record. The eatery, located in Svendborg’s Møllergade, opened in 2015 with the primary purpose of helping ex-prisoners land on their feet. The kitchen serves good and honest food made with love and care.
Stella Maris means ‘star of the sea’, and this hotel is fittingly located right on the coast of Svendborgsund Strait. A temperance hotel up until 2012, Stella Maris was named the top 4-star hotel in Denmark in 2018. The hotel restaurant serves simple organic French and Danish dishes based on only the best ingredients.
This restaurant lives up to its name by presenting a resumé of classic dishes and new gastronomical trends. The restaurant offers a gourmet set menu, which changes from day to day.
FALSLED KRO
CAFE LYØ
This charming old village inn has a long and rich history and is internationally acclaimed for its exceptional gastronomy. Falsled Kro serves Danish and French cuisine focusing on local, seasonal ingredients and also offers panorama views of the Helnæs Bay.
The Lyø Boys – three chefs and one waiter, who all know each other from Restaurant Brdr. Price in Copenhagen – have started Café Lyø in the island’s former school, serving steaming hot stone-oven pizza and pasta dishes throughout June, July, and August.

Mogensen Stuen (The Mogensens room) is a result of a great love for this people artist, who took the Danes by storm, and as it is today, has a big place in many Danish hearts. Mogensen stuen is decorated with unprecedented photographs of John - his life portrayed in pictures. Without comparison, we are especially proud of the great painting, which adorns the living room. The painting measures 2,5m x 4m. and is telling John’s life, and several of his lyrics are included in a particularly beautiful way.
