# FLX Fun Facts Ontario County, once called the “Mother of Counties,” was the first and largest settlement in Western New York dating back to 1789. It spanned the area from Geneva, west to Buffalo between Lake Ontario and the Pennsylvania state line. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman in the United States to be awarded a medical degree. She received it from Geneva Medical College, located on what is now the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Hill Cumorah and nearby Palmyra are the birthplace of the Mormon religion. Routes 5 & 20 converge in certain parts of New York State, including Ontario County. The roads were originally Indian trail paths and then stagecoach paths across NYS. Route 20 is one of the first transcontinental highways, running from Boston to Oregon.

The average annual rainfall in Ontario County is 33 inches.

Ontario County farmers are credited as among the largest producers of cabbage, worldwide. The cabbage harvester was invented here.

The average annual snowfall in Ontario County is 50 inches. Frost Hill in Naples is the highest point in Ontario County. It has an elevation of 2,280 feet. Bristol Mountain has the largest vertical ski drop (1200’) of any winter resort between the Adirondacks and Rocky Mountain Ranges. Over 1200 horses are stabled at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack during the racing season. 6

The agricultural diversity of Ontario County’s 850 farms encompass dairy, beef, sheep, alpaca, swine, poultry, cash crops, vegetables, vineyards, orchards, small fruit, nursery and greenhouse plants.

Scientists at Cornell Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva “birthed” five of the east’s most popular apple varieties: Cortland, Empire, Macoun, Jonagold and Fortune. In August of 2013, two new varieties were introduced: DragonSnap and RubyFrost.

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

We love our

Lakes One look from above and it’s easy to see why the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York deserves its name. The long slender bodies of water form a striking resemblance to the fingers of an outstretched hand. Native Americans believe the lakes were formed when the Great Spirit placed his hand on the land to bless it and left behind a divine handprint. Modern science credits the formation of the Finger Lakes to centuries-old glacial activity. How ever the lakes were formed, one thing is certain - those who live here and those who visit, share in the blessing of the breathtaking Finger Lakes Region.

Honeoye Lake – “Lying Finger” Honeoye is a prime fishing spot in the Finger Lakes, thanks to its pond-like ecosystem. In the winter, the water freezes quickly and maintains its solid surface through the season to become a playground for ice fishing, skating, and even ice boating. Length: 5 miles • Depth: 30 feet

Canadice Lake – “Long Lake” Perhaps named with a bit of humor, Canadice is quite tiny, but it packs a lot of natural beauty. Length: 3 miles • Depth: 91 feet

Hemlock Lake – “Sister Lake to Canadice” The “sister lake” to Canadice, Hemlock Lake supplies drinking water to the city of Rochester. The tree-lined undeveloped setting of the sister shores creates a contrasting experience to the larger more populated lakes. Since these two are remote in setting, they’re both peaceful places to relax and enjoy nature. Length: 8 miles • Depth: 96 feet

Canandaigua Lake – “The Chosen Spot” The reason why Canandaigua Lake is often called “the playground of the Finger Lakes” is obvious. The lake and surrounding area provide a host of recreational opportunities. It’s also where Squaw Island, a landmark off the lake’s north shore, is found. This tiny island was a former refuge to Seneca women and children. From its parks to vineyards to boat tours and more, Canandaigua Lake has something for everyone to enjoy. Length: 16 miles • Depth: 262 feet

Seneca Lake – “The Seneca Nation” Seneca Lake connects directly to the Atlantic Ocean through New York State’s Erie Canal System. At night, a drum-like beating can be heard across Seneca’s waters. Legend has it that the sound is the reverberations of our Native American ancestors’ drums. Science explains the mysterious beating as the escape of natural gas deposits from beneath Seneca’s deep waters. Its depth and size make Seneca Lake a favorite of sailing and diving enthusiasts. Length: 36 miles • Depth: 632 feet

Top Visitor Requests for

Happiness!

#1 Lakes I want to get on the lakes. What’s the best way to do that?

There are five Finger Lakes. Each one is a different experience, exhibiting its own personality. For quiet, go to Canadice and Hemlock. For activity, visit one of the others. Take a tour boat ride on the Canandaigua Lady. Go fishing - head for the piers (Long Pier, Geneva; City Pier, Canandaigua.) Swim and relax at a lakeside park - rent your gear at Canandaigua Sailboarding.

#2 Wine! Which wineries do I go to? How do I wine tour?

There are over 120 wineries in the Finger Lakes. Here’s the most efficient way to tour them. Follow a wine trail, with your designated driver, of course. Check out the Canandaigua Wine Trail and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Do some limotouring ... or take Crush on Canandaigua for a real insider to guide you. Where to start? Finger Lakes Wine Center at Sonnenberg Gardens or the New York Wine and Culinary Center. Why? Taste many brands in one place and then plan your tour to the wineries that you liked the best! P.S. Don’t forget that the Finger Lakes also has great breweries, distilleries and juices too!

877-386-4669 877-386-4669

#3 Relax.

I just want to relax what are the ways to have a pampered retreat? Here’s what I’d do - pick your accommodations - a B & B or a lakeside retreat are great for this. Next, I’d take my book and find “a cozy corner!” How do you find those? That’s why you picked your accommodations first. Ask them, they’ll send you to the right place. Spas are great too!

8

8

#4 Hike & Bike I want to go hiking and biking! Where do I go? How hard is it? Can I rent a bike?

This is another “on the ground question”... because there are so many options. Pick up our hiking and biking kit of almost 76 trails. These are also online! Visit during one of our outdoor events ... Mussleman Triathlon; Black Diamond Duathlon; the Bristol Highlander - just to name a few! Stop at Geneva Bike Shop or the RV&E in Canandaigua. They have all the routes, the equipment, and the inside scoop!

#5 Bristol Mountain Yep, that’s right, people just outright call and ask about skiing. Our answer - go for it, there’s no better place.

#6 Naples Grape Festival. Definitely the most requested event we have is the Grape Festival.

So our answer is the same as the above - definitely “go there and have fun!” Come back another time for some of our other unique events: Christkindl Market at Granger Homestead or Hill Cumorah Pageant to name just two.!

#7 New York Wine & Culinary Center. There are so many experiences to be had here.

Try these out: Winemaker or brewcrafters’ dinners; hands-on cooking classes; wine tastings; and the Upstairs Bistro featuring New York State products!

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

Dear Miss Pat:

answers on happiness

Finger Lakes Insider, Pat, is no stranger to the charm of the Finger Lakes that provokes never-ending happiness. A native of Gorham, Pat worked for the Visitors Connection for eight years before retiring to a life of leisure (and lots of smiles!) that is not limited to enjoying time with her grandchildren, taking in the scenery, and answering our happiness questions from our happy-minded people right here!

DEAR Miss Pat! I’m going to be in the Rochester area for a conference this winter and I’ve heard so much about the Finger Lakes and want to see it. I’ll only have a ½ a day. What should I make sure that I do during that time? I’ll have my wife with me too - so make sure it’s a great couples’ event. ~ Escapee from another seminar, Erie, Pennsylvania. Dear Escapee in the Winter We actually get asked this all the time. The lure of the lakes can’t be beaten, even in the winter. Make sure you pack your camera - because the views are stunning in any season - go to the lakefront and snap away. Throw away that stuffy agenda and do this: 1. Leave your seminar at 11:30 and head straight to the New York Wine and Culinary Center. It’s not your ordinary lunch - because it’ll give you a sampling of all things made in NY.

2. Pick up a bottle of wine for your hotel room for later on - and one as a gift for the nanny you left at home! 3. Stop on Main Street in Canandaigua (this one is for your wife) and visit a gift shop to pick up a local product, art or jewelry at one of the galleries. There’s variety for anyone. 4. Adorn Jewelry would be an ideal “make-up” to your wife for all those hours that you’ve been stuck at the conference center and she just wanted to get out to the FLX (that’s the local slang for the Finger Lakes). 5.The natives in the area will recommend that you go to Bristol Mountain and ski, snowboard, crosscountry - anything to play in the snow. It’s a great atmosphere, just down the road - and they have a great deal for a night pass. 6. Bonus: you can have a little aprés ski event at Arbor Hill’s Brew and Brats or Brown Hound Bistro after you’re done on the slopes! Yep, that’s a lot to do... but guaranteed - you’ll want to come back in another season. And next time, book that bed and breakfast and stay overnight down in Lake Country! DEAR Miss Pat! I am an international traveler and I Love NY... but I’ve only been here once before. This time, I want to see a bit more of the countryside. I’ll be arriving in New York City and visiting Niagara Falls. I’ve been told that the Finger Lakes is a great stop in between those destinations, but I don’t know how long it is between places and what I should do to make the most of this trip. I could stop for up to two days, but I really need to know what to do! ~ Geographically Challenged, London, England. Dear Geo Challenged! You made the right move by asking us and planning on a couple of days. We’ve actually had some people think that the Finger Lakes could be

99

for the happy-minded people

just a stopover between these two great destinations. You are obviously much more prepared than some of our travelers! Here’s a quick list - and I know you’ll want to come back again after getting a taste of our lakes! Coming from the southeast (that’s where NYC is compared to us) you’ll want to make sure to stop at a town at the southern end of one of the lakes. Think about Corning for the Glass Center, Ithaca for the college town feel, or Watkins Glen for a great outdoors experience. Then head north and make way across the lakes. Stop at a winery on Seneca Lake or Canandaigua Lake and taste the area’s growing wine industry, first hand. You’re only two hours from Niagara Falls at this point, so I’d stay overnight here - go to a locally-owned restaurant and ask for the best of the local products - buckwheat, grape pie, cheese! In the morning, think about an invigorating hike and learn about the Native American history at Ganondagan State Historic Site. That’ll be good knowledge to take with you to Niagara Falls! That’s the quick summary: wine, water, wonders - and grapes and history. Enjoy the Falls – but you know, the water’s much calmer in the FLX!

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT Everyone has their “go-to” grape pie vendor in Naples, and we encourage you to find your favorite by checking out some of the grape pie makers you can find by following us to www.visitfingerlakes.com/grapepie

The sweet history of grape pies

Grapes, grapes, grapes! If there’s one thing that Naples, NY has a lot of,

it’s grapes. In 1959, Irene Bouchard, an employee of Widmer Wine Cellars, decided to start her own baking business and take advantage of all those random grapes around town – particularly the Concord grape! Her business took off when Al Hodges, owner of the The Redwood Restaurant, commissioned Irene to make pies for his restaurant. One slice wasn’t enough for his customers – they wanted to take home full pies! In one season, 2 ¼ tons of Concord grapes were plucked and then tucked to make many, many grape pies. Fast forward as the grape pie business got bigger and bigger. In 1978, Cindy Trzeciak saw the wine industry slowing, so in an effort to save the grapes, she opened her front doors and began selling her famous grape pies. Her record sales? More than 6,000 in a year! Another champion of grape pies: Monica Schenk, owner and namesake to Monica’s Pies. She entered the market in 1983 when the demand for Concord grapes lessened as winelovers turned to white varietals. And if you’re around Naples, you’re sure to run into Jeni Makepeace, also known for her award-winning pies, since 2001. Her father a manager at Widmer’s, Jeni had grapes in her palate from the time she was little!

877-386-4669

With all of these grape pies and the distinct history of grapes in Naples, it’s no surprise that every year the community has a special festival to celebrate the tasty fruit! The Naples Grape Festival is held the last weekend of September (in 2013 - Sept. 28 and 29). Since 1961, talented artisans, wine makers, local and regional music and food vendors have come together to celebrate the grape harvest, and to compete for the coveted World’s Greatest Grape Pie title! How big of a deal is the Festival and the Naples grape pie? In 2004, they gained national acclaim on the Food Network!

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

John Brahm John Brahm, winemaker and owner of Arbor Hill Grapery, has been in the grape growing and wine making business for more than 40 years. Upon graduating from Cornell University, he was offered a job at Widmer Wine Cellars in Naples, working in the vineyards. After learning and enjoying the business for 23 years at Widmer, John decided it was the time to fulfill his dream of having his own business. In 1987, John and his wife opened Arbor Hill Grapery. Throughout the last 20-plus years, John has continued to add to both the Arbor Hill gourmet food line and has produced 18 award-winning wines. Today he has 45-plus gourmet foods and finishing sauces. He is responsible for re-introducing the Vergennes grape wine into the market. John was the first person in the world to produce Traminette wine, Arbor Hill’s signature wine. In 2000, John and Arbor Hill were featured on the Food Network show “Food Finds.” John has also won some very distinctive awards for his gourmet food items. The Black Raspberry Celery Seed Dressing won a trophy at the New York Fancy Food Show, and two other dressings received honorable mention. John samples his products for quality purposes every day. His motto is, “Enjoy, Taste after Taste, Time after Time.”

BREW & BRATS

Cheers! Did you know?Arbor Hill and Brew & Brats went green in 2013! When you stop this year for a cold beer, a hot brat or the winemaker’s sauerkraut, there’s a good chance a majority of the power used to produce these items came directly from the sun – via Arbor Hill’s new solar power system. A 150-year old carriage barn running on solar power? That’s right. It’s downright amazing that a historic structure can so easily be adapted to this modern technological miracle, making Arbor Hill and Brew & Brats proactive, green businesses!

Bristol Mountain marks its

during the 2013-14 winter season! Flashback: the Tuesday, December 8,

1964 edition of The Daily Messenger was earmarked as the “Bristol Mountain Ski Edition”. The front page picture showcased

Bristol Mountain gets its start

Austrian Willi Falger (second from right) was the first Director of the Ski School at Bristol Mountain.

As a college student, Lawrence J. Demarse began the search for the right location for the Ski Center, along with his partner, H. Ronald Ratnik. Seven years later, they decided on the current spot due to its vertical rise, scenic beauty, and proximity to large cities and the NYS Thruway. Fred Sarkis, along with two General Motors engineers, were the driving force behind the $1 million dollar facility consisting of two double chairlifts, one T-Bar, one J-Bar, and a snowmaking system that covered the main slope. The snowmaking system was the world’s largest underground system consisting of 30,000 feet of pipe, two large air compressors, two water pumps, and 20 portable nozzles which covered the bottom half of the mountain and the main slope, Rocket Run.

Pass info, slope conditions, and more: visit bristolmountain.com

Robert F. Kennedy accepted an invitation to attend the opening day ceremony but had to cancel at the last minute. As promised, he skied the slopes of Bristol Mountain the following season.

Bristol Mountain today!

The Resort currently boasts 34 trails, two terrain parks, and the Summit Nordic Center. All of the original chairlifts have been replaced with two high speed detachable quads, three fixed grip lifts and one conveyor (carpet) lift. Snowmaking operations have expanded and become automated to include over 100 fan guns and the additional capacity for air water guns. In 2011, the first phase of the renovation on Rocket Lodge, formerly Main Lodge, was completed. This project expanded the size of the lodge, creating a new state-of-the-art kitchen and the debut of Carver’s Kitchen, a server-style restaurant.

Bristol Mountain fame

In 1964, several local visionaries introduced the wonder of snow skiing to the Finger Lakes region and, 50 years later, visitors continue to come from the surrounding areas in addition to 18 other states and Canada to ski and snowboard at Bristol Mountain. Although there have been many changes to the landscape, one thing remains the same: Bristol Mountain continues to promote a healthy lifestyle with a strong family focus by maintaining an excellent snow experience for skiers and snowboarders. Many winter athletes claim Bristol Mountain as their home mountain. Pepi Neubauer, the first person to win 100 USSA Gold Medals, nine-time Masters World Champion and three-time Powder 8 World Champion with partner Franz Fuchsperger (heli-skiing in virgin powder), is a long time Bristol Mountain season passholder. Rochester-area natives Jonathon Lillis and Dylan Walczyk are members of the US Ski Team, both vying for a spot on the 2014 US Olympic Team. John Kroetz, Bristol Mountain Freestyle Coach since 2001, has done a tremendous job in preparing the Freestyle skiers for success in this arena, seeing several of his team members transition to the US Ski Team developmental programs in Lake Placid and Salt Lake City.

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

Playing Hooky The phrase “playing hooky” generally refers to a person who skips school or work without a valid excuse. In Ontario County, we want to encourage “playing hooky” because everyone needs a recharge day! In fact, we are so committed to the concept we’re helping you with your excuses! Read on...

Boss, I have to take the day off because:

1. I have a pet emergency.

2. I have a new client meeting.

Everyone loves Fido or Fluffy these days. So leverage this excuse when you want to do these things in Ontario County: Go to the thoroughbred horse races at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack; visit the Golden Oaks or Lazy Acre Alpaca Farm in Honeoye and West Bloomfield. (P.S. if you use this excuse, make sure you actually have a pet!)

This one can be a win-win. What does one do when they meet a new client? Take them to a really great lunch spot and the golf course! Yep, we can satisfy this hooky idea. We have ten public golf courses in Ontario County - and so many good lunch spots. In fact, this is such a good reason to play hooky that you might have to meet ten new clients this year! 3. My family needs my attention! This is a hard one because, instantly, your co-workers are going to assume that it’s a sad situation you’re dealing with. The boss does not need to know that there was no doctor’s appointment or funeral - because it’s hard to jive that with the reality that the attention that you’re giving your family is to take them to the Sprayground at Seneca Lake State Park or Roseland Waterpark! Be careful of public pictures on this one. If you’ve rented those kayaks at Canandaigua Sailboarding and someone’s taking scenic shots of the lake from the land - you don’t want to be in them! 4. My sister is getting married and I’m in the wedding and I need some extra time to pack my outfits for her Destination FLX wedding!

visitfingerlakes.com

877-386-4669

This one actually happens frequently here - and it’s a real excuse. If it’s a winter wedding you’ll need your skis, your camera, your snow shoes, and your Snuggie® (to sit in front of your fireplace at the B & B!) In the spirit of honesty you might just want to take some real vacation days for this one and plan ahead; you’re here, don’t miss the best things to do.

5. My car broke down.

Finger Lakes style.

This is perfect for the Finger Lakes, because even if your car does break down (you know how sometimes you make an excuse and then it really happens and you wish you’d never said that?) you can still visit all the wineries. Check in with Finger Lakes Winery Tours, or Crush on Canandaigua or find a limo that visits the wineries. That broken car doesn’t need to break your spirit or break up that plan for a day along the wine trail.

6. I need some R&R. Taking one day off from work (especially a beautiful day) may raise an eyebrow and some well-placed suspicion. So, plan ahead and take two days off! This gives you an opportunity for an overnight at some pretty interesting local places: how about the Gell Center in the Bristol Hills to retreat and write? Or, book an overnight package at a secluded B & B like Mountain Horse Farm Bed and Breakfast. Spend the first day skiing at Bristol Mountain, next day is wine tasting (for medicinal purposes of course) and the spa treatment. You’ll want a third day to go shopping at EASTVIEW Mall at the new Van Maur Store - but resist temptation to extend that far - you could run into someone at the mall buying you a get well gift or flowers!

Disclaimer: Finger Lakes Visitors Connection takes absolutely no responsibility for missed work or lost jobs. Use these tips (excuses) at your own risk. We do take responsibility for putting the idea into your head that there are a lot of reasons to visit the Finger Lakes!

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

History

in the Finger Lakes

11,000 years ago – Glaciers retreated and formed “the lakes”. 1794 - The Canandaigua Treaty is signed between the United States of America and the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy - Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk and Tuscarora. Today, celebrate this each November 11 at the Ontario County Courthouse and with visits to the Ontario County Historical Society and Ganondagan State Historic Site. 1817 - Construction of the Erie Canal began in New York State. Today, both Rose Hill Mansion and the Prouty-Chew Museum are conveniently situated with a view of Seneca Lake – our premier access point to the canal and canal history. 1830 - Seven years after Joseph Smith visited Hill Cumorah and found “the ancient record”, the Book of Mormon was printed in Palmyra, NY. Today, Hill Cumorah is the site of a state of the art visitors center and the annual pageant celebrating the Mormon religion. 1873 - Susan B. Anthony was tried and convicted at the Ontario County Courthouse for voting illegally. Just ten years before that, the first Lady Justice statue was erected and placed atop the Ontario County Courthouse to witness the event. Today, Historic Main Street Canandaigua is a great place to walk in Anthony’s footsteps! 1816, 1829, 1839, 1856, 1869, and 1887 - Granger Homestead,

Prouty-Chew Museum, Rose Hill Mansion, Foster Cottage Museum, Howe House, and Sonnenberg Mansion were constructed, respectively. Today, you can take their tours and learn about the special features of each home – from a carriage collection of over 70 horse drawn vehicles to a two story outhouse!

1945 - What today is known as Constellation Brands – was founded by Marvin Sands as Canandaigua Industries. It is the largest distributor of premium wines in the world. Today, big-name musicians from all over the world take the stage each summer season at Constellation Brands – Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC), which is also the summer home to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. 2012 – Outdoor sports have always been “hot” in the Finger Lakes. But, during the 2012 summer, our area took Olympic Gold - many times. Who has local roots? Meghan Musnicki (Canandaigua Academy grad, Naples, NY) – U.S. rowing team; Ryan Lochte (Bristol, NY native) – U.S. men’s swimming; and Abby Wambach – we all know that – U.S. women’s soccer! Trust us, there will be more of that history to come. They have lots of great land to practice on!

2013 – FLVC declares it the Year of Happiness. Help us make it come true everyday!

If you like history, architecture and art - you have it all in Lady Justice(regilded in 2012), who stands atop the Ontario County Courthouse.

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

A Great Place to Live is a Great Place to Visit! We asked residents, “What makes YOU happiest about living in the Finger Lakes?” And they said...

Theresa Charlebois - Bloomfield

“Well that is an easy question to answer.”

Out of all the places I’ve traveled to, and I’ve traveled to a lot of places, nothing compares to the Finger Lakes. I’ve traveled for work, and I’ve traveled for pleasure. Every time I embark on a trip to warmer places, I hope that I will fall in love with my destination just as much as I love it here. You see, I am not a lover of the winter cold. But I am a lover of hiking. Of camping. Of waterfalls and sunflowers. Of beautiful sunsets. Of weekends getting lost on a new trail. Of photography of babies, families, and couples. And the Finger Lakes gives me all of these things I love so dearly. From the beauty of Canandaigua Lake, to the quietness of Boughton Park, to the tranquility of Grimes Glen. Swimming, boating, walking, hiking, kayaking, skiing, picnics. The Finger Lakes just has it all. And I get to fall in love with the many amazing places in the Finger Lakes doing what I love most: photography. I am at my happiest when I am taking pictures for family and friends. Engagement shoots. Family shoots. Even weddings. Right here in the Finger Lakes. There are so many places to go for unique shots and beautiful surroundings. And it’s because of this happiness that I find right here in my own backyard that I haven’t moved (despite this winter’s snow!). P.S… Attached are a couple of my favorite shots!

We raised two children that now share our love for the region and know that Ontario County will always be home to them. A place where they learned to swim in the waters of Canandaigua Lake and an open and enriching environment where they learned

the values of community and life.

As a native of Western New York and the Finger Lakes Region there is nothing more inspiring to me than the land itself. Happiness to me is being in the outdoors of Ontario County. I grew up in a town to the west in neighboring Livingston County. The days of my youth were spent hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and working most of the acres on the farms in my corner of the town. As a young man, I moved to nearby Rochester for a couple of years. When it came time to settle down and raise a family there was no question that I would return to country living. My new wife and I found a suitable home in the quiet Ontario County village of Bloomfield. Despite it being a village home, it seemed more like country to me with the large one-acre lot and open fields beyond. Our large village lot has a back yard that serves as an extension to the region’s wildlife range. Looking out our kitchen window we do not see another house but rather the simple beauty of the land. My first love is nature and being in the outdoors. Ontario County is still very much a rural county despite its close proximity to human development. The county is home to all that is wild and free. We raised two children that now share our love for the region and know that Ontario County will always be home to them. A place where they learned to swim in the waters of Canandaigua Lake and an open and enriching environment where they learned the values of community and life. They now have taken their place in the world at large, one as an art teacher and one as a forester.

Living as one with the land is what happiness is for me. Ontario County holds those values and will continue to influence generations to come.

What wonderful places to spend a day on the water.

Pat Tobin – Victor Traveling around Ontario County in the Finger Lakes reminds me of why nature is so peaceful and good for our well-being. Ontario County touches on Livingston County where both counties are home to the Little Finger Lakes, Conesus, Hemlock, Canadice and Honeoye. What wonderful places to spend a day on the water. Public parks allow easy access.

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

Lynne Standish- – Travel Happiness to me is cycling around the Finger Lakes – sun on my face, smelling honeysuckle.

the clusters of grapes hang heavily on the vine, the fragrance saturates the atmosphere all around us. Winter snow paints panoramas of unmatched beauty. In summer, water skiing is my favorite pastime. Geneva offers the best in churches, schools, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Finger Lakes Community College, New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, library, hospital and medical facilities; I could go on and on. I have lived in the Geneva area for 61 years – do you suppose I may consider myself a native! At 83 years of age, I’ve given up my aspiration of living in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Carol and I consider Geneva our home, and we love it here in Ontario County!

Clair and Carol Schaffner – Geneva Ontario County, specifically Geneva, NY, was introduced to me via the US Air Force when I was stationed at Sampson Air Force Base. My destiny was to remain at Sampson all four years. When the fours years would end, I planned to return to my home state and become a teacher in Hershey, Pennsylvania, yes, Chocolate Town, USA! – chosen as my ideal community. When Carol and I married, she moved from Pennsylvania to Geneva and taught second grade in the original North Street School. When I was discharged a year later, I became a teacher in Waterloo and subsequently in Geneva. Geneva was rapidly becoming “home” to us, and we decided to remain here. We love the natural beauty of Ontario County – the beautiful, calm, blue waters of Seneca Lake and how fierce, wild, and turbulent they become in a storm. We marvel at the spectacular sunrises and sunsets reflected in Seneca’s waters. We love the rolling vineyards on the perimeter of the lake. In autumn, when

Frank and Melody Tennity – Honeoye There’s so much to love about living in this area. It starts with the bare trees in the spring and late snow on the ground, and then the color of the leaves and the Grape Festival in the fall. But we also love the friendliness of the area as a whole, and that there’s always so much to do here – whether it’s biking, kayaking, fishing, hunting, or skiing. Frank used to fish on Honeoye Lake with his dad when he was young, and early in our marriage,

Chris Mahan - Travel Happiness looks like the snap of a bratwurst and quench of a lager at John Brahm’s Brew & Brats while listening to the trill of a fiddle and plunk of a banjo. Alexandra Grimm- Travel

Happiness to me is driving along West Lake Road with the car windows open and the sunlight streaming in.

we bought an aluminum boat and we would come down after work and end up fishing in the dark. I would fall asleep in the boat while Frank kept on fishing. When we had the opportunity to buy our land on Honeoye Lake, it was perfect because it was within distance from Rochester, where Frank was working, and now that we’re retired, it’s wonderful to live there. We’ve been doing our fishing guide service since the late ‘90s, and we meet the best people, and it’s so great to see them learn so much. Once we had a group of three guys from overseas, and one hadn’t budgeted for a fishing trip, so while his two buddies were fishing, I took the guy out to Harriett Hollister Park so he could hike. And when he got back, he just marveled at the land, and the space between the houses and the road. I just loved that. We have a lot of families that come back year after year, too, and so we see these young kids start off looking scared to even go down the stairs to the pier, but their confidence grows, and it’s so nice to witness that. The friendliness is in the people that live here as well as the visitors. Living here is close to heaven - it’s the greatest thing to see the stars at night, the fog hanging over the valleys in the morning… it’s just the place to live.

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT Here’s a quick glimpse about each community. Our suggestion: sample from each one so you can truly understand what makes our county special! One note of caution – like on the pages preceding this, you may run into some passionate residents who will brag to

Just like spices in a rack,

our towns, cities and villages are distinctive in personality. Each lends its own nuance of flavor to the place that is Ontario County, “the Mother of Counties.”

you about what a great place this is to live! Actually, that’s a good thing – because not only do we love showing off all that we have here – we’re mostly good about sharing it, too!

Robin Voorhees Naples Valley Brand naplesvalley.com

Carl Bray Geneva On The Lake genevaonthelake.com

Naples Valley Brand was started over fifteen years ago out of a combination of Robin’s love for the outdoors, eating great food and entertaining family and friends. Her products can be found in over 30 locations throughout the Finger Lakes.

Geneva On The Lake offers an eclectic, classical cuisine using a number of local ingredients and fresh herbs. The restaurant provides an elegant candlelight dining experience in a unique, Europeanstyle setting. Chef Carl Bray has been a chef at Geneva On The Lake for five years and was the 2010 champion of the Slice, Dice and Spice NY Finger Lakes culinary competition.

Q. Why is it important for your business to be located in the Finger Lakes? A. It’s simple - I love it here and the people are great. When I’m out doing deliveries and sales calls, I drive along the lakes and think every time about how much I love this area. As I’m going, I take pictures at just about every winery and shop I stop at, and it’s amazing, because it seems they all have a majestic view – it’s just so pleasant to be in this area. And it’s all year round. I don’t even mind the snow, I love it. Q. Do you have a favorite Finger Lakes ingredient to use in your products? A. I’d have to say the apricot puree from Red Jacket Orchards. I use it in my apricot mango jalapeno jam (I grow my own jalapenos in my garden) and apricot mango jam. Everything I get from Red Jacket is just so pure. I also love getting my blueberries from Hillview Blueberry Farm in Prattsburgh. It’s an awesome experience going there – the fields are just covered in blueberries. Q. Why do you love living in the Finger Lakes? A. It’s pleasant and it’s beautiful. I was raised on Long Island and my husband is from New Jersey, so we really appreciate the relaxed, slower life here. The people, the views – it’s always like driving through a park. We feel very spoiled. Q. What do you like to do in the Finger Lakes when you’re not at work? A. My husband and I live in Naples, on five acres. We hike in Camp Cutler nearly every day with the dog, I ride my bike, cook, swim in the lakes. And I love skiing at Bristol Mountain. Like most everybody, I’m always looking forward to getting outdoors, no matter the season.

Q. What are your favorite Finger Lakes ingredients to use? A. Tough to name one. I really love Days Bros. maple syrup from Phelps - wonderful to use in soups and with squash. Lively Run Goat Cheese and Muranda Cheese are both really great. They can stand alone on a cheese board or go together with other foods. I also like working with Windy Ride Farms for produce. It’s a great organic farm, and everything they give me is top notch. From squash to spinach to broccoli to cauliflower, it’s all incredible! Q. Why are you so passionate about cooking in the Finger Lakes? A. We have a great growing season and we live in farm country, so there is never a shortage of product. I feel that even more so now than before it just continues to grow with artisans, tourists and wineries. It’s both rewarding and encouraging. You can go down to an Amish farm down the road and get what you want – you don’t have to go to a grocery store. Q. What do you like to do in the Finger Lakes when you aren’t in the kitchen? A. My family likes hiking and camping. I’m an outdoorsy kind of guy so I am happy to be at a park or spend summertime at the lake. Q. You grew up in the area, but what made you stay in the area as a chef? A. I love this area. It is safe and beautiful. The Finger Lakes scenery itself is worth the stay.

Matt Cassavaugh Casa Larga Winery canandaiguawinetrail.com The Canandaigua Wine Trail features over five wineries, a wine center, and a brewery. Matt Cassavaugh, head winemaker at Casa Larga Winery, ascended through every aspect of the restaurant business before finding his passion for winemaking. At Casa Larga, Matt began in the cellar and climbed to head winemaker while also obtaining a degree in Viticulture and Wine Technology from Finger Lakes Community College. Q. What inspires your passion for winemaking? A. It’s part romantic and part pragmatic. From the romantic side, it’s hard to not be permanently enthralled after the first time you’re working in a vineyard and you catch a striking sunrise or sunset, or after you’ve tended a crop and finally get to taste the juice from the grapes you nurtured. Pragmatically, making wine is a multi-faceted trade, and is able to suit a variety of my curiosities at once. Q. What kind of grape is your favorite to work with? A. A good glass of Riesling can reveal new layers of aromas and textures every time you take a sip. Its versatility allows it to be crafted into a huge variety of styles to suit every palate and make it interesting and enjoyable, yet challenging to work with. Q. What makes the Finger Lakes a great place for cultivating noteworthy wines? A. The natural resources of the area are unparalleled, but the number one contributing factor is the people. Everyone is passionate about their own wines but also about the region as a whole. Together, with the sharing of the knowledge acquired from both successes and shortcomings, the people in this region have allowed it to advance much more quickly. Q. What makes you happy to live in the Finger Lakes? A. The Finger Lakes offer an interesting mix of people, natural beauty and activities. It’s not everywhere that you can spend a day outside hiking, boating, and swimming, but also have the opportunity to take in the level of art, culture and world-class wine/dining that the region offers.

Artists create

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

in the Finger Lakes

Peter Jemison www.ganondagan.org Q. As an artist, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. I really love the four seasons. The changing landscapes from summer to fall and from winter to spring. Some winter landscapes really inspire me with bright light and beautiful shadows coming from the snow on a late afternoon. Likewise, I’m inspired in the spring as plants come back and we see and hear birds. Q. As a resident, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. What I really like is the lakes themselves. I love being able to drive along Canandaigua or Seneca Lake and just take in the beautiful vistas that exist around the area. I can imagine some of the events that had to take place here, anything from signing of the Canandaigua Treaty to the time when the Seneca occupied the area on the south end of Canandaigua Lake. The whole area is just so beautiful. You can take low roads or high roads along the lake and get a totally different experience. Q. What in the Finger Lakes inspires your artwork? A. I would say the landscape in general. Sometimes I just like to hone into the natural like the native plants that grow in the environment. At other times I like to see the whole of the area and the much bigger picture. In my yard I have a cherry tree. I watch and anticipate the blossoms and the coming of the leaves, and I cherish the fruit when that comes. Crops like grapes and apples and corn have been here for a very long time. These things give you a sense of the bounty of the landscape and the land. That landscape inspires me as well. Q. What is your favorite thing to do in the Finger Lakes? A. I love to take a nice walk in some part of the landscape that I may or may not be familiar with. I get to walk it and explore it. Even at Ganondagan there are a couple of trails I don’t take regularly, like the Seneca Trail. It has deep woods and fields and smaller wooded areas, a high ridge that overlooks a stream. On a warm summer day it is great to get in the woods where it is nice and cool.

Cindy Harris www.harrisstudios.com Q. As an artist, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. I love the lush, varied landscape of the Finger Lakes, from the water and hills to the fields and wooded pine areas and so much more. The four seasons with their changes in light, color and temperature are exciting for me to try to capture in my art. Also, this area has an abundance of artists to collaborate with as well as an appreciation of art. Between the beauty of this area and the people here, the Finger Lakes is an amazing place to grow as an artist. Q. As a resident, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. It’s such a beautiful place to live and people are very passionate about what they do. There is an abundance of creativity and joy here. It’s also a great place to raise a family. I raised two children in the Finger Lakes and have so many wonderful memories. From skiing at Bristol Mountain, to finding four leaf clovers on our back lawn, we treasure each experience as a special gift of living in such a beautiful place. It always feels like we are on vacation even when we are home. Q. What in the Finger Lakes inspires your artwork? A. Capturing the light and colors of the Finger Lakes inspires my work in a significant way. Also, visiting local galleries and working with other artists in the studio or plein air is deeply inspiring. Q. What is your favorite thing to do in the Finger Lakes? A. Taking a long walk with my dog at sunrise in the Bristol Hills, listening to the birds, smelling the fresh air, feeling the sun on my face and experiencing the magnificence of the landscape is one of my favorite things to do here... (I actually have quite a long list.) When possible I like to unplug from technology and just BE... getting into the creative gap and allowing ideas to just flow.

Vasiliy Baziuk www.vasiliyimages.com Q. As an artist, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. As a photographer I enjoy the relaxed feel that I get from being in the Finger Lakes. It’s a nice balance of water and hills and scenery. Q. As a resident, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. As a resident, I enjoy the seasons in the Finger Lakes and the beauty they each bring. To me, seasons are the rhythm of life. Q. What in the Finger Lakes inspires your artwork? A. What inspires my photography in the Finger Lakes is the scenery and the people. It’s the discovery of all that is in the Finger Lakes that excites me. I see something, like a location for a shot or people doing something, and that liberates my imagination and gets it moving. I am always thinking of the next great photo or a backdrop for a photo. Q. What is your favorite thing to do in the Finger Lakes? A. My favorite thing to do in the Finger Lakes is sailing in the summertime and skiing in winter. I also enjoy driving around the lakes, daydreaming and taking the scenery in with an occasional winery stop or a grape pie from a roadside stand.

The 1907 Bragdon House is a beautiful bed & breakfast located in the heart of Geneva, NY. The four-bedroom home is within minutes of Hobart & William Smith Colleges, local shops, pubs, and wonderful restaurants. Mother and daughter duo, Diana and Jennifer, run the Inn.

Mountain Horse Farm B&B and Spa in Naples offers peaceful and relaxing getaways on 33 acres situated in the Bristol Hills. The B&B features a log home with a wrap-around porch, a carriage house and an onsite spa offering a variety of luxurious treatments.

A. After visiting several bed & breakfasts and historic homes, Jaynee had a passion to rescue an old home that desperately needed to be brought back to life. She collected/refinished old furniture for over 20 years, until we had no more room. We discussed looking for a B & B, but put our dream on the back burner. We’re from Buffalo, and when our daughter moved down this way, we visited. This house was for sale, and as soon as Jaynee saw it, she knew this was the one. It was in dire need of renovation but, thanks to guidance from other B&B owners and Jaynee’s inspiration, we were able to set it up to make it comfortable for guests and give them everything they need. And this is what we’ve done since 2004. We always wanted to be innkeepers. We enjoy being with people, and we love the area because it draws people from all over the world, all cultures and all countries. We’ve met so many people who are now our friends.

Q. Favorite thing to do in your free time and what do you recommend to visitors who stay with you? A. We love to tour around the different lakes in the Finger Lakes. We stop in at the new wineries and breweries because it’s so much fun to see them start and grow.

We recommend that visitors talk to the winemakers at the wineries and not just do the wine tastings. We also suggest that they visit the downtowns of the local towns for the unique small town feel.

Q. What do visitors frequently comment on or love about your property?

Q. How did you end up in the Finger Lakes, and what drew you to the Inn business?

A. We were both born and raised in Geneva, with a very large family surrounding us. I (Diana) was a part time Inn sitter in Skaneateles for five years, while Jennifer was living and working in Chicago. Upon her return in 2005 to the Finger Lakes, we saw the opportunity to open a B&B in our town and started off running and haven’t stopped. Our Inn really represents both of us, and we love the guests, conversations, and the opportunity to meet new people with different backgrounds every day.

Q. Favorite thing to do in your free time, and one thing you recommend to all visitors who come in?

A. We keep busy. Golfing at the different courses around the Finger Lakes is one of our favorite things, but we also enjoy biking the trails, hiking at the different falls around the lake, boating on Seneca, and possibly most important, exploring the wineries to see what is upcoming or just released so we can impart that knowledge on our guests. We highly encourage them to keep an open mind when visiting all of the wineries – they’re always surprised how many wines they enjoy. Of course, we love drinking our favorite Finger Lakes wines on the porch!

Q. What do visitors frequently comment on/ love about your property? A. They feel right at home when they’re here. We often hear that coming to the Bragdon House is “just like visiting old friends”, because it’s such a comforting and inviting environment, and that’s what we strive to create. And they’re always stunned by the fantastic Seneca Lake views from the beautiful veranda!

A. From the moment they walk in they feel at ease and at home. We don’t overburden them with our presence. We want them to feel like this is their home.

Check out our Rest Easy in the Finger Lakes Board!

Q. How did you end up in the Finger Lakes and what drew you to become an Innkeeper? A. We’re from the Netherlands, so it reminded us of Germany and parts of Europe. In December 2008 we moved to Bristol and have been happy here. In my younger years I worked in restaurants and hotels. When we moved here, I knew it was time to make a change. I wanted lots of space and horses back in my life. Finally I’m back to my first love – being an innkeeper.

Q. Favorite thing to do in your free time and what do you recommend to visitors who stay with you?

A. I like to spend time with my horses and dogs, have dinner at new restaurants or drive around to the wineries, not just to taste the wines but because they usually are located in places with beautiful views. We encourage guests to go for wine tastings, visit and hike at Cumming Nature Center, ski at Bristol Mountain or enjoy Canandaigua Lake. For the shoppers, we suggest the specialty shops like Artizanns in Naples.

Q. What do visitors frequently comment on or love about your property? A. The way we decorate is different and unique; it’s a mix of rustic and modern. The massages and other opportunities for relaxation are popular. The peacefulness, views and horses also make our guests happy. mething local!

Fun in the Finger Lakes doesn’t stop when the sun goes down… Roast some ‘mallows! S’mores: a delectable nighttime snack. Enjoy them over a fire or grill at a local campground, with a glass of wine at the fire pit on Edgar’s outdoor patio at Belhurst Castle, or over a bonfire at a cozy B&B. A tip: buy your chocolate locally at Sweet Expressions, Whisper Chocolate, or Angelic Gourmet!

Catch a show

Hit the slopes

The slopes come alive under the lights! The “Twilight Pass” at Bristol Mountain is perfect for a short burst of skiing or boarding on those chilly winter nights – and even better for a quick stop in the Lodge for some hot cocoa!

World-class theater in small towns? Heck, yes! For those cool summer evenings, head down to Bristol Valley Theater in Naples for one of their seasonal shows, or check out the yearround schedule at the Smith Opera House in Geneva!

Perfect the pour Okay, so you might not be pouring, but you can wrap your hands around that perfect pint at Arbor Hill’s Brew & Brats, the Bee Hive Brew Pub, Seneca Brew House, and more! Wine more your thing? Tour the Canandaigua and Seneca Lake Wine Trails, and end your night at Lake Street Filling in Geneva, with live music!

Dine with a ghost

Test your luck

You read that right. On Thursday nights, enjoy a family-style dinner at the Naples Hotel, where you’ll hear tales of the Hotel’s “permanent” residents! Not spooky enough? Try a late night ghost hunt, exploring three floors of the hotel while using true paranormal investigation technologies. www.napleshotelny.com

Get your game on – at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack! The gaming floor offers video poker and more than 1,200 slot machines. While you’re there, stop by the Vineyard Buffet and enjoy everything from regional cuisine to a pasta station to delicious desserts.
