THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT
This will probably come as no surprise to you – our reader that our Visitors Connection team loves promoting the Finger Lakes Region and Ontario County. 1.5 million people visited Ontario County and New York’s Finger Lakes last year. They chose our destination as “the place to be” in their leisure time! Why? Well, simply put – the Finger Lakes vacation experience is a great return of their time and their money. But, more importantly, this was a place that made them feel good! Across the 9,000 square miles of the Finger Lakes you can find thousands of things to do ranging from exhilarating downhill skiing to meditative summer sun soaking. Happiness here is a spectrum of activities from mixing with the throngs of festival goers at an event like the Naples Grape Festival to sipping a glass of Finger Lakes Riesling – just the two of you in cozy chairs overlooking the lake.
“The Finger Lakes Happiness Project”.
I am FLHP-ing the travel benefit switch on right now in the Finger Lakes! (Apologies for a ridiculous acronym – but it sounded cool and every project needs a good codeword without a vowel in it.) FLHP starts right here, right now with the hundreds of authentic smiles you see in this guide of people having fun here; happiness extends digitally with our Insiders’ tips on the web and on the phone. Our happiness project will never be finished, it’s viral – spreading smile by smile as it is customized: person to person – family to family. Don’t delay any more … FLHP the pages of this guide – and let your Happiness adventure begin!

Canandaigua, Keuka, and Honeoye Lakes appear to be on fire for the Ring of Fire celebration at the end of harvest season and the conclusion of summer lake season. You can participate in the lighting, which stems from a Native American tradition. It’s quite the sight! Geneva is known as the “Lake Trout Capital of the World”!

Seneca Lake is the deepest (618 feet); while Honeoye Lake ranks the shallowest (30 feet). Humphrey Bogart spent his summers on Canandaigua Lake. Happy! Canadice Lake, despite its Native American translation meaning “Long Lake”, is actually the smallest of the Finger Lakes at just under 4 miles long!

Robin Voorhees Naples Valley Brand naplesvalley.com
Carl Bray Geneva On The Lake genevaonthelake.com
Naples Valley Brand was started over fifteen years ago out of a combination of Robin’s love for the outdoors, eating great food and entertaining family and friends. Her products can be found in over 30 locations throughout the Finger Lakes.
Geneva On The Lake offers an eclectic, classical cuisine using a number of local ingredients and fresh herbs. The restaurant provides an elegant candlelight dining experience in a unique, Europeanstyle setting.
Q. Why is it important for your business to be located in the Finger Lakes? A. It’s simple - I love it here and the people are great. When I’m out doing deliveries and sales calls, I drive along the lakes and think every time about how much I love this area. As I’m going, I take pictures at just about every winery and shop I stop at, and it’s amazing, because it seems they all have a majestic view – it’s just so pleasant to be in this area. And it’s all year round. I don’t even mind the snow, I love it.
Chef Carl Bray has been a chef at Geneva On The Lake for five years and was the 2010 champion of the Slice, Dice and Spice NY Finger Lakes culinary competition.
Q. Do you have a favorite Finger Lakes ingredient to use in your products? A. I’d have to say the apricot puree from Red Jacket Orchards. I use it in my apricot mango jalapeno jam (I grow my own jalapenos in my garden) and apricot mango jam. Everything I get from Red Jacket is just so pure. I also love getting my blueberries from Hillview Blueberry Farm in Prattsburgh. It’s an awesome experience going there – the fields are just covered in blueberries. Q. Why do you love living in the Finger Lakes? A. It’s pleasant and it’s beautiful. I was raised on Long Island and my husband is from New Jersey, so we really appreciate the relaxed, slower life here. The people, the views – it’s always like driving through a park. We feel very spoiled. Q. What do you like to do in the Finger Lakes when you’re not at work? A. My husband and I live in Naples, on five acres. We hike in Camp Cutler nearly every day with the dog, I ride my bike, cook, swim in the lakes. And I love skiing at Bristol Mountain. Like most everybody, I’m always looking forward to getting outdoors, no matter the season.
Q. What are your favorite Finger Lakes ingredients to use? A. Tough to name one. I really love Days Bros. maple syrup from Phelps - wonderful to use in soups and with squash. Lively Run Goat Cheese and Muranda Cheese are both really great. They can stand alone on a cheese board or go together with other foods. I also like working with Windy Ride Farms for produce. It’s a great organic farm, and everything they give me is top notch. From squash to spinach to broccoli to cauliflower, it’s all incredible! Q. Why are you so passionate about cooking in the Finger Lakes? A. We have a great growing season and we live in farm country, so there is never a shortage of product. I feel that even more so now than before it just continues to grow with artisans, tourists and wineries. It’s both rewarding and encouraging. You can go down to an Amish farm down the road and get what you want – you don’t have to go to a grocery store. Q. What do you like to do in the Finger Lakes when you aren’t in the kitchen? A. My family likes hiking and camping. I’m an outdoorsy kind of guy so I am happy to be at a park or spend summertime at the lake. Q. You grew up in the area, but what made you stay in the area as a chef? A. I love this area. It is safe and beautiful. The Finger Lakes scenery itself is worth the stay.
19
Rich Jerome Jerome’s U-Pick jeromesupick.com Rich Jerome runs a family-owned u-pick farm, Jerome’s U-Pick, in Naples. The farm features strawberries, raspberries, peas, and a wide variety of grapes. The business is in its 8th generation. Q. What makes the Finger Lakes region an asset for you as a fruit farmer? A. The Finger Lakes is a temperate climate and the lakes make this a great place for grape growing and fruit production. Using certain varieties of grapes, we are able to really take advantage of the climate. We grow 14 different varieties on the Pick-YourOwn block alone. Different varieties go to different wineries - our Baco Noir goes to Heron Hill, for example, and we love supplying the local grape pie makers with their grapes. Q. Do you have a product that’s unique to the Finger Lakes or that is better coming from here than some other location? A. The red raspberries we grow are special. They’re a commodity that is kind of few and far between around here. If you look in the marketplace, other than the shipped-in ones, there are very few locallygrown raspberries. They’re a tender crop and are fragile during harvest season, but with pick-yourown, consumers can get them fresh off the bush and back home to use them as fresh as possible. Q. Why do you love living in the Finger Lakes? A. The farm has been in our family for almost 200 years, starting in 1817. I’m the 7th generation and my kids, who grew up on the farm, are the 8th. It’s such a beautiful area with the hills, valleys and the lakes. My house overlooks the farm and every day the view is something different. Depending on the fog, sometimes the tops of the hills look like islands. Q. What do you like to do in the Finger Lakes when you’re not in the orchards? A. We have a family cottage on Honeoye Lake, so we spend a lot of family time there with my kids and grandchildren. We swim, we boat, and we enjoy each other and the outdoors.

Best place to get a drink by the lake on a Friday night If you’re looking for a party by the lake, the place to be is The Sand Bar at The Inn on the Lake. Kick back and relax at this Caribbeanstyle bar with a drink and some tasty snacks while enjoying live music and watching the sunset over beautiful Canandaigua Lake!

John Brahm Featured winemaker
John Brahm, winemaker and owner of Arbor Hill Grapery, has been in the grape growing and wine making business for more than 40 years. Upon graduating from Cornell University, he was offered a job at Widmer Wine Cellars in Naples, working in the vineyards. After learning and enjoying the business for 23 years at Widmer, John decided it was the time to fulfill his dream of having his own business. In 1987, John and his wife opened Arbor Hill Grapery. Throughout the last 20-plus years, John has continued to add to both the Arbor Hill gourmet food line and has produced 18 award-winning wines. Today he has 45-plus gourmet foods and finishing sauces. He is responsible for re-introducing the Vergennes grape wine into the market. John was the first person in the world to produce Traminette wine, Arbor Hill’s signature wine. In 2000, John and Arbor Hill were featured on the Food Network show “Food Finds.” John has also won some very distinctive awards for his gourmet food items. The Black Raspberry Celery Seed Dressing won a trophy at the New York Fancy Food Show, and two other dressings received honorable mention. John samples his products for quality purposes every day. His motto is, “Enjoy, Taste after Taste, Time after Time.”
Q. What makes the Finger Lakes a great place to own a winery and specialty food store?
A. It’s a great grape growing region because of the Finger Lakes themselves and the positive modifying effect they have on the weather. The lakes and the positive attributes for growing grapes are the same attributes that make it a great area for views and vistas.
Q. In your opinion, what makes the Finger Lakes so special?
A. I think there are two things, it’s peopleoriented, and there is such great camaraderie in the wine and specialty food movement in the Finger Lakes. This is in addition to the idyllic vistas I view from my home each and every day.
Q. What activity in the Finger Lakes makes you the happiest?
A. Sampling wine, drinking beer and exploring the world of antique cars in the Finger Lakes. I just can’t think of a better place to live.
23
Q. What’s your personal favorite Arbor Hill product or favorite use of an Arbor Hill product?
A. I would really have to say in the wine area it is going to be Traminette. We were instrumental in bringing this new grape to the market in 1996 and it is considered our signature wine. People use Arbor Hill’s Traminette as a standard in the industry. For food products, I would say our Black Raspberry Celery Seed Dressing, which is a modification of a recipe from my grandmother. There are a lot of raspberry vinaigrettes, but I have never seen another black raspberry celery seed dressing. It won an international award at the Fancy Food Show and is our number one product in terms of sales. It’s excellent as a salad dressing, but equally as good with many vegetables and in combination with cheeses and nuts.

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT
A Great Place to Live is a Great Place to Visit! We asked residents, “What makes YOU happiest about living in the Finger Lakes?” And they said...
Theresa Charlebois - Bloomfield
“Well that is an easy question to answer.
Out of all the places I’ve traveled to, and I’ve traveled to a lot of places, nothing compares to the Finger Lakes. I’ve traveled for work, and I’ve traveled for pleasure. Every time I embark on a trip to warmer places, I hope that I will fall in love with my destination just as much as I love it here. You see, I am not a lover of the winter cold. But I am a lover of hiking. Of camping. Of waterfalls and sunflowers. Of beautiful sunsets. Of weekends getting lost on a new trail. Of photography of babies, families, and couples. And the Finger Lakes gives me all of these things I love so dearly. From the beauty of Canandaigua Lake, to the quietness of Boughton Park, to the tranquility of Grimes Glen. Swimming, boating, walking, hiking, kayaking, skiing, picnics. The Finger Lakes just has it all. And I get to fall in love with the many amazing places in the Finger Lakes doing what I love most: photography. I am at my happiest when I am taking pictures for family and friends. Engagement shoots. Family shoots. Even weddings. Right here in the Finger Lakes. There are so many places to go for unique shots and beautiful surroundings. And it’s because of this happiness that I find right here in my own backyard that I haven’t moved (despite this winter’s snow!). P.S… Attached are a couple of my favorite shots!
We raised two children that now share our love for the region and know that Ontario County will always be home to them. A place where they learned to swim in the waters of Canandaigua Lake and an open and enriching environment where they learned

the values of community and life.
As a native of Western New York and the Finger Lakes Region there is nothing more inspiring to me than the land itself. Happiness to me is being in the outdoors of Ontario County. I grew up in a town to the west in neighboring Livingston County. The days of my youth were spent hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and working most of the acres on the farms in my corner of the town. As a young man, I moved to nearby Rochester for a couple of years. When it came time to settle down and raise a family there was no question that I would return to country living. My new wife and I found a suitable home in the quiet Ontario County village of Bloomfield. Despite it being a village home, it seemed more like country to me with the large one-acre lot and open fields beyond. Our large village lot has a back yard that serves as an extension to the region’s wildlife range. Looking out our kitchen window we do not see another house but rather the simple beauty of the land. My first love is nature and being in the outdoors. Ontario County is still very much a rural county despite its close proximity to human development. The county is home to all that is wild and free. We raised two children that now share our love for the region and know that Ontario County will always be home to them. A place where they learned to swim in the waters of Canandaigua Lake and an open and enriching environment where they learned the values of community and life. They now have taken their place in the world at large, one as an art teacher and one as a forester.

What wonderful places to spend a day on the water.
Pat Tobin – Victor Traveling around Ontario County in the Finger Lakes reminds me of why nature is so peaceful and good for our well-being. Ontario County touches on Livingston County where both counties are home to the Little Finger Lakes, Conesus, Hemlock, Canadice and Honeoye. What wonderful places to spend a day on the water. Public parks allow easy access.

What do I love? The valleys, the lakes, the hills, and the spacious fields of agriculture.
Lynne Standish- – Travel Happiness to me is cycling around the Finger Lakes – sun on my face, smelling honeysuckle.
the clusters of grapes hang heavily on the vine, the fragrance saturates the atmosphere all around us. Winter snow paints panoramas of unmatched beauty. In summer, water skiing is my favorite pastime. Geneva offers the best in churches, schools, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Finger Lakes Community College, New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, library, hospital and medical facilities; I could go on and on. I have lived in the Geneva area for 61 years – do you suppose I may consider myself a native! At 83 years of age, I’ve given up my aspiration of living in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Carol and I consider Geneva our home, and we love it here in Ontario County!
Clair and Carol Schaffner – Geneva Ontario County, specifically Geneva, NY, was introduced to me via the US Air Force when I was stationed at Sampson Air Force Base. My destiny was to remain at Sampson all four years. When the fours years would end, I planned to return to my home state and become a teacher in Hershey, Pennsylvania, yes, Chocolate Town, USA! – chosen as my ideal community. When Carol and I married, she moved from Pennsylvania to Geneva and taught second grade in the original North Street School. When I was discharged a year later, I became a teacher in Waterloo and subsequently in Geneva. Geneva was rapidly becoming “home” to us, and we decided to remain here. We love the natural beauty of Ontario County – the beautiful, calm, blue waters of Seneca Lake and how fierce, wild, and turbulent they become in a storm. We marvel at the spectacular sunrises and sunsets reflected in Seneca’s waters. We love the rolling vineyards on the perimeter of the lake. In autumn, when
Frank and Melody Tennity – Honeoye There’s so much to love about living in this area. It starts with the bare trees in the spring and late snow on the ground, and then the color of the leaves and the Grape Festival in the fall. But we also love the friendliness of the area as a whole, and that there’s always so much to do here – whether it’s biking, kayaking, fishing, hunting, or skiing. Frank used to fish on Honeoye Lake with his dad when he was young, and early in our marriage,

we bought an aluminum boat and we would come down after work and end up fishing in the dark. I would fall asleep in the boat while Frank kept on fishing. When we had the opportunity to buy our land on Honeoye Lake, it was perfect because it was within distance from Rochester, where Frank was working, and now that we’re retired, it’s wonderful to live there. We’ve been doing our fishing guide service since the late ‘90s, and we meet the best people, and it’s so great to see them learn so much. Once we had a group of three guys from overseas, and one hadn’t budgeted for a fishing trip, so while his two buddies were fishing, I took the guy out to Harriett Hollister Park so he could hike. And when he got back, he just marveled at the land, and the space between the houses and the road. I just loved that. We have a lot of families that come back year after year, too, and so we see these young kids start off looking scared to even go down the stairs to the pier, but their confidence grows, and it’s so nice to witness that. The friendliness is in the people that live here as well as the visitors. Living here is close to heaven - it’s the greatest thing to see the stars at night, the fog hanging over the valleys in the morning… it’s just the place to live.

Artists create
THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT
in the Finger Lakes
Peter Jemison www.ganondagan.org Q. As an artist, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. I really love the four seasons. The changing landscapes from summer to fall and from winter to spring. Some winter landscapes really inspire me with bright light and beautiful shadows coming from the snow on a late afternoon. Likewise, I’m inspired in the spring as plants come back and we see and hear birds. Q. As a resident, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. What I really like is the lakes themselves. I love being able to drive along Canandaigua or Seneca Lake and just take in the beautiful vistas that exist around the area. I can imagine some of the events that had to take place here, anything from signing of the Canandaigua Treaty to the time when the Seneca occupied the area on the south end of Canandaigua Lake. The whole area is just so beautiful. You can take low roads or high roads along the lake and get a total different experience. Q. What in the Finger Lakes inspires your artwork? A. I would say the landscape in general. Sometimes I just like to hone into the natural like the native plants that grow in the environment. At other times I like to see the whole of the area and the much bigger picture. In my yard I have a cherry tree. I watch and anticipate the blossoms and the coming of the leaves, and I cherish the fruit when that comes. Crops like grapes and apples and corn have been here for a very long time. These things give you a sense of the bounty of the landscape and the land. That landscape inspires me as well. Q. What is your favorite thing to do in the Finger Lakes? A. I love to take a nice walk in some part of the landscape that I may or may not be familiar with. I get to walk it and explore it. Even at Ganondagan there are a couple of trails I don’t take regularly, like the Seneca Trail, it has deep woods and fields and smaller wooded areas, a high ridge that overlooks a stream. On a warm summer day it is great to get in the woods where it is nice and cool.
Cindy Harris www.harrisstudios.com Q. As an artist, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. I love the lush, varied landscape of the Finger Lakes, from the water and hills to the fields and wooded pine areas and so much more. The four seasons with their changes in light, color and temperature are exciting for me to try to capture in my art. Also, this area has an abundance of artists to collaborate with as well as an appreciation of art. Between the beauty of this area and the people here, the Finger Lakes is an amazing place to grow as an artist. Q. As a resident, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. It’s such a beautiful place to live and people are very passionate about what they do. There is an abundance of creativity and joy here. It’s also a great place to raise a family. I raised two children in the Finger Lakes and have so many wonderful memories. From skiing at Bristol Mountain, to finding four leaf clovers on our back lawn, we treasure each experience as a special gift of living in such a beautiful place. It always feels like we are on vacation even when we are home. Q. What in the Finger Lakes inspires your artwork? A. Capturing the light and colors of the Finger Lakes inspires my work in a significant way. Also, visiting local galleries and working with other artists in the studio or plein air is deeply inspiring. Q. What is your favorite thing to do in the Finger Lakes? A. Taking a long walk with my dog at sunrise in the Bristol Hills, listening to the birds, smelling the fresh air, feeling the sun on my face and experiencing the magnificence of the landscape is one of my favorite things to do here... (I actually have quite a long list.) When possible I like to unplug from technology and just BE... getting into the creative gap and allowing ideas to just flow.

Vasiliy Baziuk www.vasiliyimages.com Q. As an artist, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. As a photographer I enjoy the relaxed feel that I get from being in the Finger Lakes. It’s a nice balance of water and hills and scenery. Q. As a resident, what do you love about the Finger Lakes? A. As a resident, I enjoy the seasons in the Finger Lakes and the beauty they each bring. To me, seasons are the rhythm of life. Q. What in the Finger Lakes inspires your artwork? A. What inspires my photography in the Finger Lakes is the scenery and the people. It’s the discovery of all that is in the Finger Lakes that excites me. I see something, like a location for a shot or people doing something, and that liberates my imagination and gets it moving. I am always thinking of the next great photo or a backdrop for a photo. Q. What is your favorite thing to do in the Finger Lakes? A. My favorite thing to do in the Finger Lakes is sailing in the summertime and skiing in winter. I also enjoy driving around the lakes, daydreaming and taking the scenery in with an occasional winery stop or a grape pie from a roadside stand.

When the French destroyed Ganondagan in 1687, they destroyed over 500,000 bushels of white corn in the granary on Fort Hill. But, white corn has just recently come back in a big way at Ganondagan. Stop by the Native American Historic Site and take home some bags of whole corn, hand-roasted corn and corn flour. While there, learn about the cultural, nutritional and spiritual importance of white corn to the Haudenosaunee.

50 years of pottery in the Finger Lakes
By AJ Shear
For the past 50 years, Jim Kozlowski has been making pottery in the Finger Lakes. And since 1979, he has been doing so as co-owner, along with his wife, Lois, of the Wizard of Clay Pottery in the town of Bristol. In 1977, following a 12-year career in the classroom, Jim left teaching art in the Greece Central School District in suburban Rochester, NY, and began making pottery full time. Two years later, Jim and Lois opened the Wizard of Clay Pottery.
visitfingerlakes.com
877-386-4669
Jim built the first four geodesic dome buildings at the Wizard of Clay himself. Thirty-four years later, the business has seven employees, including his now part-owner son, Jamie, and 12-year-old grandson, Carver. “If I said name one potter who is making a living at pottery -- and I mean a living, not by having financial inheritance, not by having a spouse who is working, not by having a part-time job -- but making a living, feeding your children, taking care of people with the work of your hands -- with pottery alone,” said Jim, “there would not be many. I’m kind of a rare bird in that instance.”
Jim likes to reflect on words from a book called The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. “There is one line I think about almost every day, ‘Work is love made visible’. When I work, I am not just in love with the material; I am in love with my family. I want to share this with people, and my work is how I can show it.” He also draws inspiration from the Finger Lakes region. The Wizard of Clay’s signature pottery, Bristoleaf®, features imprints of real leaves from the Bristol area on the finished clay products. For Jim and his family, living in the Finger Lakes is a point of pride. “People are wonderful everywhere in the world. But this is home and the people are good here, and I wouldn’t think of living anywhere else,” said Jim. Jim estimates that he uses 60-80 thousand pounds of clay a year and has already surpassed making his onemillionth pot. He has speculated that if someone took all the clay he has used, made it into grapefruit sized balls and lined them up, the line would stretch from Bristol to Rochester, a distance of more than 30 miles. And Jim has no plans of stopping anytime soon. “It’s not work. It’s never a job. I am making pots for people to use. I am making pots as beautiful as I can make them, and that’s all I do. I sit down at the wheel and it all melts away and it’s so familiar, so comfortable,” said Jim. “It happens every day and I’ll continue to do it, hopefully until God says I can’t.”

History
in the Finger Lakes
11,000 years ago – Glaciers retreated and formed “the lakes”. 1794 - The Canandaigua Treaty is signed between the United States of America and the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy - Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk and Tuscarora. Today, celebrate this each November 11 at the Ontario County Courthouse and with visits to the Ontario County Historical Society and Ganondagan State Historic Site. 1817 - Construction of the Erie Canal began in New York State. Today, both Rose Hill Mansion and the Prouty-Chew Museum are conveniently situated with a view of Seneca Lake – our premier access point to the canal and canal history. 1830 - Seven years after Joseph Smith visited Hill Cumorah and found “the ancient record”, the Book of Mormon was printed in Palmyra, NY. Today, Hill Cumorah is the site of a state of the art visitors center and the annual pageant celebrating the Mormon religion. 1873 - Susan B. Anthony was tried and convicted at the Ontario County Courthouse for voting illegally. Just ten years before that, the first Lady Justice statue was erected and placed atop the Ontario County Courthouse to witness the event. Today, Historic Main Street Canandaigua is a great place to walk in Anthony’s footsteps! 1816, 1829, 1839, 1856, 1869, and 1887 - Granger Homestead,
Prouty-Chew Museum, Rose Hill Mansion, Foster Cottage Museum, Howe House, and Sonnenberg Mansion were constructed, respectively. Today, you can take their tours and learn about the special features of each home – from a carriage collection of over 70 horse drawn vehicles to a two story outhouse!
1945 - What today is known as Constellation Brands – was founded by Marvin Sands as Canandaigua Industries. It is the largest distributor of premium wines in the world. Today, big-name musicians from all over the world take the stage each summer season at Constellation Brands – Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC), which is also the summer home to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. 2012 – Outdoor sports have always been “hot” in the Finger Lakes. But, during the 2012 summer, our area took Olympic Gold - many times. Who has local roots? Meghan Musnicki (Canandaigua Academy grad, Naples, NY) – U.S. rowing team; Ryan Lochte (Bristol, NY native) – U.S. men’s swimming; and Abby Wambach – we all know that – U.S. women’s soccer! Trust us, there will be more of that history to come. They have lots of great land to practice on!
2013 – FLVC declares it the Year of Happiness. Help us make it come true with your visit this year!
If you like history, architecture and art - you have it all in Lady Justice(regilded in 2012), who stands atop the Ontario County Courthouse.

A Word with Mayor of Canandaigua
Then, visit the Ontario County Historical Society. They’re doing a display on the history of Canandaigua.
City Hall’s famous clock tower! It is a prominent landmark in Canandaigua that stands atop a busy City Hall. The city’s 1848 Reeves clock is a testament to an era before standardized time was developed; when railroads all kept separate time schedules and when gongs rang out through the air informing all of the day’s hour. According to the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors it is the only known surviving example of a Reeves and Company “A” Frame Tower Clock that is complete. Reeves was a machining company located in New York City on Canal Street during the Industrial Revolution. Our city fathers chose well in selecting this manufacturer for their public clock. Next time you are in Canandaigua and stopped at the light at the corner of North Main Street and Ontario Street, look up at the historic clock. If you are there at the right time you can set your watch by it.
What would you tell a visitor to do? First, take advantage of the wonderful geographic resource, Canandaigua Lake, the wonderful historical architecture we’ve been able to preserve in the community and the friendliness of the people who live here. Also, I would recommend shopping in the many retail establishments in downtown and the plaza. We have many niche type shops dealing with everything from oil and vinegar to new and refurbished clothing and jewelry. For example, the new shop that opened on Main Street called The New You is a very neat concept.
Ellen Polimeni What makes this year special – besides being the Centennial? For example, how are you using the events to connect to history? There are many organizations and groups in the city that are incorporating the Centennial celebration into their annual activities. For example: The arts council is doing Spaghetti Opera. There’s a spaghetti dinner and people sing various opera songs from the time periods. Broadway by the Lake has music from around the 1913 era. The Wood Library is doing many programs related to the early 1900’s to give people the feel for what it was like to live here then. The Centennial committee is sponsoring a series of lectures that focus on different time periods in the 100 years. A Native American bronze statue will be put in place in November – community effort to raise the money for it. Canandaigua is a Native American term, Chosen Spot, so we wanted to do something to reflect the heritage of the community.
37 37
In your eyes, what makes Canandaigua a great place to live? It’s a combination of the small town atmosphere created by the people who live here and that we’re able to sustain the wonderful geographic resource of the lake. Why do you think Canandaigua is a great place to visit? Canandaigua is a great place to work, live and play for all of the reasons I’ve given. Being part of the Finger Lakes Region – the whole geological history of the region is so important to us. The Finger Lakes were created by the glaciers, so the geological past of the world has been kind to us by giving us such a great region. From Canandaigua you can reach out to so many other places: Niagara Falls, Canada, the Great Lakes. We are very central you can reach out to some of the larger cities around us and use Canandaigua as a base for traveling.

Q. How did you end up in the Finger Lakes and what drew you to become an Innkeeper? A. After visiting several Bed and Breakfasts and historic homes, Jaynee had a passion to rescue an old home that desperately needed to be brought back to life. She collected/refinished old furniture for over 20 years, until we had no more room. We discussed looking for a B & B, but put our dream on the back burner.
We’re from Buffalo, and when our daughter moved down this way, we visited. This house was for sale, and as soon as Jaynee saw it, she knew this was the one. It was in dire need of renovation but, thanks to guidance from other B&B owners and Jaynee’s inspiration, we were able to set it up to make it comfortable for guests and give them everything they need. And this is what we’ve done since 2004. We always wanted to be innkeepers. We enjoy being with people, and we love the area because it draws people from all over the world, all cultures and all countries. We’ve met so many people who are now our friends.
Q. Favorite thing to do in your free time and what do you recommend to visitors who stay with you? A. We love to tour around the different lakes in the Finger Lakes. We stop in at the new wineries and breweries because it’s so much fun to see them start and grow.
We recommend that visitors talk to the winemakers at the wineries and not just do the wine tastings. We also suggest that they visit the downtowns of the local towns for the unique small town feel.
Victor’s Homewood Suites by Hilton features 90 rooms and suites, all with kitchenettes, so it’s easy to get comfortable in your home away from home! Located just moments from lush vineyards and wineries as well as local shopping in downtown Canandaigua or nearby Eastview Mall.
Q. How did you end up in the Finger Lakes, and what drew you to the hotel business?
A. I grew up in New Hampshire and started working with a hotel company at the age of 14. I am a second generation hotelier. The main reason I stay in the hospitality industry is the satisfaction I get in making people feel as comfortable as possible. Conrad Hilton (founder of the Hilton family of brands) once said that his “vision is to fill the Earth with the light and warmth of hospitality”. So each day I try to live up to that and create a warm, caring, comfortable, safe, and friendly environment for each of our guests.
Q. Favorite thing to do in your free time, and one thing you recommend to all visitors who come in? A. In the summer, I love to golf. Ravenwood is one of my favorites. If our visitors are golfers, I always suggest the fabulous “Finger Lakes Foursome” – they can play Ravenwood, Bristol Harbour, Mill Creek, and Grey Stone for a great value and get a great golfing experience. Not a golfer? I suggest our visitors go to at least one of our local wineries.
Q. What do visitors frequently comment on/ love about your property?
A. As cliché as it sounds, I often hear the same thing: ‘This is the friendliest staff I have ever met’. It’s a point of pride. There’s no better feeling than hearing that our hotel ‘is the best’ they’ve ever stayed at, or that it’s their ‘home away from home’.
Mountain Horse Farm B&B and Spa in Naples offers peaceful and relaxing getaways on 33 acres situated in the Bristol Hills. The B&B features a log home with a wrap-around porch, a carriage house and an onsite spa offering a variety of luxurious treatments.
Q. How did you end up in the Finger Lakes and what drew you to become an Innkeeper? A. We’re from the Netherlands, so it reminded us of Germany and parts of Europe. In December 2008 we moved to Bristol and have been happy here. In my younger years I worked in restaurants and hotels. When we moved here, I knew it was time to make a change. I wanted lots of space and horses back in my life. Finally I’m back to my first love – being an innkeeper.
Q. Favorite thing to do in your free time and what do you recommend to visitors who stay with you?
A. I like to spend time with my horses and dogs, have dinner at new restaurants or drive around to the wineries, not just to taste the wines but because they usually are located in places with beautiful views. We encourage guests to go for wine tastings, visit and hike at Cumming Nature Center, ski at Bristol Mountain or enjoy Canandaigua Lake. For the shoppers, we suggest the specialty shops like Artizanns in Naples.
Q. What do visitors frequently comment on or love about your property? A. The way we decorate is different and unique; it’s a mix of rustic and modern. The massages and other opportunities for relaxation are popular. The peacefulness, views and horses also make our guests happy. mething local!

The 1840 Inn on the Main bed and breakfast is located right in the heart of Canandaigua’s historic district in an 1840 Empire Victorian. It is tastefully decorated in period furnishings and offers five rooms, each with en suite baths.
Q. What do visitors frequently comment on or love about your property?
A. From the moment they walk in they feel at ease and at home. We don’t overburden them with our presence. We want them to feel like this is their home.

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT
We love our
Lakes
One look from above and it’s easy to see why the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York deserves its name. The long slender bodies of water form a striking resemblance to the fingers of an outstretched hand. Native Americans believe the lakes were formed when the Great Spirit placed his hand on the land to bless it and left behind a divine handprint. Modern science credits the formation of the Finger Lakes to centuries-old glacial activity. However the lakes were formed, one thing is certain - those who live here and those who visit, share in the blessing of the breathtaking Finger Lakes Region.
Honeoye Lake – “Lying Finger” Honeoye is a prime fishing spot in the Finger Lakes, thanks to its pond-like ecosystem. In the winter, the water freezes quickly and maintains its solid surface through the season to become a playground for ice fishing, skating, and even ice boating. Length: 5 miles • Depth: 30 feet
Canadice Lake – “Long Lake” Perhaps named with a bit of humor, Canadice is quite tiny, but it packs a lot of natural beauty. Length: 3 miles • Depth: 91 feet
Hemlock Lake – “Sister Lake to Canadice” As the “sister lake” to Canadice, Hemlock Lake supplies drinking water to the city of RochFacebook.com/VisitFingerLakes ester. The tree-lined undeveloped setting of the sister shores creates a contrasting experience to the larger more populated lakes. Since these two are remote in setting, they’re both Twitter.com/VisitFingerLake peaceful places to relax and enjoy nature. Length: 8 miles • Depth: 96 feet
Canandaigua Lake – “The Chosen Spot”
Youtube.com/VisitFingerLakesNY
The reason why Canandaigua Lake is often called “the playground of the Finger Lakes” is obvious. The lake and surrounding area provide a hostPinterest.com/VisitFingerLake of recreational opportunities. It’s also where Squaw Island, a landmark off the lake’s north shore, is found. This tiny island was a forInstagram.com/VisitFingerLakes mer refuge to Seneca women and children. From its parks to vineyards to boat tours and more, Canandaigua Lake has something for everyone to enjoy. Length: 16 miles • Depth: 262 feet
visitfingerlakes.com
877-386-4669
Seneca Lake – “The Seneca Naton” Seneca Lake connects directly to the Atlantic Ocean through New York State’s Erie Canal System. At night, a drum-like beating can be heard across Seneca’s waters. Legend has it that the sound is the reverberations of our Native American ancestors’ drums. Science explains the mysterious beating as the escape of natural gas deposits from beneath Seneca’s deep waters. Its depth and size make Seneca Lake a favorite of sailing and diving enthusiasts. Length: 36 miles • Depth: 632 feet
