THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

This will probably come as no surprise to you – our reader that our Visitors Connection team loves promoting the Finger Lakes Region and Ontario County. 1.5 million people visited Ontario County and New York’s Finger Lakes last year. They chose our destination as “the place to be” in their leisure time! Why? Well, simply put – the Finger Lakes vacation experience is a great return of their time and their money. But, more importantly, this was a place that made them feel good! Across the 9,000 square miles of the Finger Lakes you can find thousands of things to do ranging from exhilarating downhill skiing to meditative summer sun soaking. Happiness here is a spectrum of activities from mixing with the throngs of festival goers at an event like the Naples Grape Festival to sipping a glass of Finger Lakes Riesling – just the two of you in cozy chairs overlooking the lake.

The Finger Lakes Insiders, as we boastfully label our tourism crew, get to hear great stories all year long about how the fun things we have to do in the Finger Lakes translate to the inner rewards of making people happy! Our joy comes from hearing these stories and extending that travel happiness formula to all our visitors. Reaping happiness … that’s what we think travel should be in the Finger Lakes. Sowing happiness – that is what the Insider’s do best!

So, by the power vested in me as President of Finger Lakes Visitors Connection – I do hereby declare that this is the year of “The Finger Lakes Happiness Project”.

I am FLHP-ing the travel benefit switch on right now in the Finger Lakes! (Apologies for a ridiculous acronym – but it sounded cool and every project needs a good codeword without a vowel in it.) FLHP starts right here, right now with the hundreds of authentic smiles you see in this guide of people having fun here; happiness extends digitally with our Insiders’ tips on the web and on the phone. Our happiness project will never be finished, it’s viral – spreading smile by smile as it is customized: person to person – family to family. Don’t delay any more … FLHP the pages of this guide – and let your Happiness adventure begin!

Carl Bray Geneva On The Lake genevaonthelake.com

Brown Hound Bistro is in a unique, cozy and casual atmosphere. Tucked in the gorgeous hills of South Bristol, it is conveniently located next to Arbor Hill Grapery. Inside, the wine list is loaded with local favorites. As for dessert? All made on site.

Geneva On The Lake offers an eclectic, classical cuisine using a number of local ingredients and fresh herbs. The restaurant provides an elegant candlelight dining experience in a unique, European-style setting.

Chef Trish is the owner of Brown Hound Bistro. Trish has years of cooking experience and is completely self-taught in the kitchen.

Chef Carl Bray has been a chef at Geneva On The Lake for five years and was the 2010 champion of the Slice, Dice and Spice NY Finger Lakes culinary competition.

Q. What is your favorite Finger Lakes ingredient to cook with? A. I love using anything from Sweet Grass Meats, sourced locally right from Naples, NY. The great thing is their product is available year-round. They are great people who live right in our community so I like to support them. Their lamb, beef, pork and chicken are all great. Q. Why are you so passionate about cooking in the Finger Lakes? A. I think that when you select foods that are fresh and grown close to home, you can feel really good about it for so many reasons – you’re supporting the local economy, and the product is better. It was grown or raised with more care and thoughtfulness than some of the big national purveyors. The flavor of the food is evident when you dine at the restaurant. Q. Why did you move to the Finger Lakes? A. The area offered the lifestyle I was looking for. I wanted a slower pace and to be around friendly people. I wanted to live in a beautiful, scenic area. And I got all of those things! Q. What do you like to do in the Finger Lakes when you aren’t in the kitchen? A. You’ll find me enjoying cross-country skiing in the backwoods with my dogs, Daisy and Lily.

Q. What are your favorite Finger Lakes ingredients to use? A. Tough to name one. I really love Days Bros. maple syrup from Phelps - wonderful to use in soups and with squash. Lively Run Goat Cheese and Muranda Cheese are both really great. They can stand alone on a cheese board or go together with other foods. I also like working with Windy Ride Farms for produce. It’s a great organic farm, and everything they give me is top notch. From squash to spinach to broccoli to cauliflower, it’s all incredible! Q. Why are you so passionate about cooking in the Finger Lakes? A. We have a great growing season and we live in farm country, so there is never a shortage of product. I feel that even more so now than before it just continues to grow with artisans, tourists and wineries. It’s both rewarding and encouraging. You can go down to an Amish farm down the road and get what you want – you don’t have to go to a grocery store. Q. What do you like to do in the Finger Lakes when you aren’t in the kitchen? A. My family likes hiking and camping. I’m an outdoorsy kind of guy so I am happy to be at a park or spend summertime at the lake. Q. You grew up in the area, but what made you stay in the area as a chef? A. I love this area. It is safe and beautiful. The Finger Lakes scenery itself is worth the stay.

Eric Mueller Warfield’s warfields.com Focusing on locally-sourced, fresh ingredients, Warfield’s High Point features a creative menu in a contemporary, elegant setting, while Warfield’s Restaurant and Bakery focuses on seasonal menus of elegant country fare with Oriental and European influences. General Manager Eric Mueller, a Finger Lakes chef for over 20 years, is a Certified Sommelier and has earned the certification of Executive Chef from the Culinary Institute of America and from the American Culinary Federation. Q. What is your favorite Finger Lakes ingredient to cook with? A. I really like working with grapes because there are so many different varieties, running the gamut from sweet Rieslings to dry reds. I also really like working with verjus. Verjus is a juice that can be used in place of lemon juice or vinegar. It is produced from the harvest of green grapes early in the season. It’s a great versatile condiment used in cooking and ideal for finishing sauces or salad dressings. Being able to play with the vinifera grapes in the Finger Lakes and using the savory aspects from them is perfect. Q. Why are you so passionate about cooking in the Finger Lakes? A. The region lends itself to passion. Even though we have a very long winter we have great growers that grow anything we ask for. The relationships are rewarding. We really get all four seasons, which helps me when I am planning menus. You want a hearty stew in the winter. In the spring you want lighter, fresher fare. It’s a great four-season climate to live and work in. Q. What do you like to do in the Finger Lakes when you aren’t in the kitchen? A. I am an avid cyclist. I love riding around the area. It is a gorgeous place to get out and enjoy when you aren’t in the restaurant.

Where can I find

the best....

Best place to always try something new

Both Ports Café and Red Dove Tavern in Geneva are the places to be if you want to try something different just about every night of the week! Ports has an ever-changing list of specials featuring fresh fish, steaks, chops and lamb, while Red Dove’s chalkboard consistently features new items. Both feature Finger Lakes beers, wines and many local ingredients.

Best place to get a drink by the lake on a summer night If you’re looking for a party by the lake, the place to be is The Sand Bar at The Inn on the Lake. Kick back and relax at this Caribbeanstyle bar with a drink and some tasty snacks while enjoying live music and watching the sunset over beautiful Canandaigua Lake!

So many restaurants in the Finger Lakes pride themselves on using local ingredients, but few live it day in and day out like Brown Hound Bistro, Leaf Kitchen and Roots Café. All three use everything they can right from the Finger Lakes and they all have plentiful vegan and vegetarian options. Enjoy the restaurants in each season to experience a different taste of the Finger Lakes!

Finding your place in history

Best place to taste the seasons

Best place to eat after a round of golf

Not only is there a Robert Trent Jonesdesigned golf course at Bristol Harbour Resort, but there is also a great restaurant to grab a beer and a bite to eat after an exciting round of golf. Sit on the terrace and take in stunning views of Canandaigua Lake while you enjoy your meal made with local and seasonal ingredients.

Feel the past blend with the present at The Holloway House in Bloomfeld and at Warfeld’s Restaurant & Bakery in Clifton Springs. Since 1808 visitors have enjoyed fine dining at The Holloway House in a beautiful colonial dwelling with a quiet, restful atmosphere. In the historic Warfield block of Clifton Springs, Warfield’s offers elegant country fare in a beautiful surrounding of brick and oak walls and ornate tin ceilings that resurrect images of times past.

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

John Brahm Featured winemaker

John Brahm, winemaker and owner of Arbor Hill Grapery, has been in the grape growing and wine making business for more than 40 years. Upon graduating from Cornell University, he was offered a job at Widmer Wine Cellars in Naples, working in the vineyards. After learning and enjoying the business for 23 years at Widmer, John decided it was the time to fulfill his dream of having his own business. In 1987, John and his wife opened Arbor Hill Grapery. Throughout the last 20-plus years, John has continued to add to both the Arbor Hill gourmet food line and 18 award-winning wines. Today he has 45 plus gourmet foods and finishing sauces. He is responsible for re-introducing the Vergennes grape wine into the market. John was the first person in the world to produce Traminette wine, which has become Arbor Hill’s signature wine. In 2000, John and Arbor Hill were featured on the Food Network show “Food Finds.” John has also won some very distinctive awards for his gourmet food items. The Black Raspberry Celery Seed Dressing won a trophy at the New York Fancy Food Show, and two other dressings received honorable mention. John samples his products for quality purposes every day. His motto is, “Enjoy, Taste after Taste, Time after Time.”

Q. What makes the Finger Lakes a great place to own a winery and specialty food store? A. It’s a great grape growing region because of the Finger Lakes themselves and the positive modifying effect they have on the weather. The lakes and the positive attributes for growing grapes are the same attributes that make it a great area for views and vistas.

Q. In your opinion, what makes the Finger Lakes so special?

A. I think there are two things, it’s peopleoriented, and there is such great camaraderie in the wine and specialty food movement in the Finger Lakes. This is in addition to the idyllic vistas I view from my home each and every day.

Q. What activity in the Finger Lakes makes you the happiest?

A. Sampling wine, drinking beer and exploring the world of antique cars in the Finger Lakes. I just can’t think of a better place to live.

11

Q. What’s your personal favorite Arbor Hill product or favorite use of an Arbor Hill product?

A. I would really have to say in the wine area it is going to be Traminette. We were instrumental in bringing this new grape to the market in 1996 and it is considered our signature wine. People use Arbor Hill’s Traminette as a standard in the industry. For food products, I would say our Black Raspberry Celery Seed Dressing, which is a modification of a recipe from my grandmother. There are a lot of raspberry vinaigrettes, but I have never seen another black raspberry celery seed dressing. It won an international award at the Fancy Food Show and is our number one product in terms of sales. It’s excellent as a salad dressing, but equally as good with many vegetables and in combination with cheeses and nuts.

Q. What is your favorite outdoor activity in the Finger Lakes?

A. Cycling. We have world-class terrain. It’s really the perfect coupling of challenging terrain and scenery. Quite frankly, it rivals any resort destination in the world. I’ve ridden both competitively and recreationally all over the world and it’s easy to compare this area to some of the most obvious places, whether it is the vineyards of France or the terrain of the Swiss Alps. You can choose to take an easier route with great country roads that are flat and rolling, and we have 21, 24, and 28 grade hill climbs that are short and steep or long and steep or even long and steady. It is really a cyclist’s dream! And being able to jump in the lake after a long ride is just perfect! How many places can you do that?

Q. Where is your favorite place to be outdoors in the Finger Lakes?

A. I love riding around Canandaigua Lake. It embodies all of it. You really get the beautiful countryside, unbelievably challenging terrain and breathtaking views. It’s not just cycling. As an athlete, and for me personally, I am never at want for something to do. I can literally go out my back door at any season and I have the world at my fingertips. It’s Nature’s Health Club. I have great skiing, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing in the winter. Spring, summer and fall… the hiking here is phenomenal. And we’ve got all the watersports in the summer – kayaking, swimming, wind surfing, you name it. When you have family and friends coming into town, there’s always something to offer. The breadth and depth of what I can do as a well-rounded athlete is just what makes it the ideal setting.

Q. How long have you been in the FLX? A. I’ve been in Victor for about 10 years.

Q. What is your favorite outdoor activity in the Finger Lakes?

Q. How long have you been in the FLX?

A. I have been at Bristol Mountain since 1975.

A. I love to explore the region by foot or by bicycle. The varying terrain, the change of seasons, the hills, the streams, the bodies of water all make outdoor recreation great in the Finger Lakes. I enjoy getting outside and exploring and learning. There is so much diversity that it is impossible in 10 years to get everywhere!

Q. What is your favorite outdoor activity in the Finger Lakes?

Q. What makes outdoor recreation in the Finger Lakes so special?

Q. What makes outdoor recreation in the Finger Lakes so special?

A. The ease of access to so many unique recreation areas is key. You can be in downtown Rochester and in 35 minutes be paddling a kayak on Canandaigua Lake. You can be on the Erie Canal path in Pittsford and ride your bike all the way to Victor without putting your bike in your car. If you did one mile of trail every year in Victor, you’d be 55 before you run out of miles with all the trails we have. We also have diversity in our parks. Ganondagan State Historic Site holds a whole different experience than Ontario County Park. You have excellent single track mountain biking, to paddling in white water and flat water. If you love road biking, you can climb Bopple Hill. It’s really the ease of access. You don’t have to drive far to really be in the woods. When I lived in Baltimore/Washington D.C. area, you had to go really far to go for a bike ride for two hours. Here I can just go right out my door. How cool is that?

Q. Where is your favorite place to be outdoors in the Finger Lakes?

A. I love to go for a swim at Kershaw Park in Canandaigua and then hop on my bike and do a workout with my buddies. We ride down in Canandaigua and go through Gorham and Rushville.

19

A. I can’t name one! It’s a variety of activities. I love that I can ski in the winter, wind surf in the summer, I can mountain bike and I can kayak or standup paddleboard. There is so much to not just watch, but also participate in, in the area.

A. Well, it is not every day that you can have the mountains, you can have the lakes, you can have the scenery. You can go off on any back road riding and the views are just spectacular. Our ski resort, Bristol Mountain, has the greatest vertical rise between the Rockies and the Adirondacks. All the ups and downs of the terrain make for a variety of activities to participate in.

Q. Where is your favorite place to be outdoors in the Finger Lakes?

A. There are so many options so I am not limited to one place. I’ve been able to ski in the morning and bike in the afternoon. I’ve windsurfed in the morning and biked later. I enjoyed this area so much from being here for the winters that in 1982 I started Canandaigua Sailboarding. It was just a continuation of my winter activities into another season.

Q. How long have you been in the FLX?

A. The Finger Lakes has been part of my life since I was eight years old. I’ve been coming here since the 1970s, and I have lived here full time since the 90s. I’ve been the owner of Tune Yoga for Sports for three years.

Canandaigua, Keuka, and Honeoye lakes appear to be on fire for the Ring of Fire celebration at the end of harvest season and the conclusion of summer lake season. You can participate in the lighting, which stems from a Native American tradition. It’s quite the sight!

Seneca Lake is the deepest (618 feet); while Honeoye Lake ranks the shallowest (30 feet). Humphrey Bogart spent his summers on Canandaigua Lake. Happy! THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

A Great Place to Live is a Great Place to Visit! We asked residents, “What makes YOU happiest about living in the Finger Lakes?” And they said...

Theresa Charlebois - Bloomfield

“Well that is an easy question to answer.

Out of all the places I’ve traveled to, and I’ve traveled to a lot of places, nothing compares to the Finger Lakes. I’ve traveled for work, and I’ve traveled for pleasure. Every time I embark on a trip to warmer places, I hope that I will fall in love with my destination just as much as I love it here. You see, I am not a lover of the winter cold. But I am a lover of hiking. Of camping. Of waterfalls and sunflowers. Of beautiful sunsets. Of weekends getting lost on a new trail. Of photography of babies, families, and couples. And the Finger Lakes gives me all of these things I love so dearly. From the beauty of Canandaigua Lake, to the quietness of Boughton Park, to the tranquility of Grimes Glen. Swimming, boating, walking, hiking, kayaking, skiing, picnics. The Finger Lakes just has it all. And I get to fall in love with the many amazing places in the Finger Lakes doing what I love most: photography. I am at my happiest when I am taking pictures for family and friends. Engagement shoots. Family shoots. Even weddings. Right here in the Finger Lakes. There are so many places to go for unique shots and beautiful surroundings. And it’s because of this happiness that I find right here in my own backyard that I haven’t moved (despite this winter’s snow!). P.S… Attached are a couple of my favorite shots!

We raised two children that now share our love for the region and know that Ontario County will always be home to them. A place where they learned to swim in the waters of Canandaigua Lake and an open and enriching environment where they learned

the values of community and life.

As a native of Western New York and the Finger Lakes Region there is nothing more inspiring to me than the land itself. Happiness to me is being in the outdoors of Ontario County. I grew up in a town to the west in neighboring Livingston County. The days of my youth were spent hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, and working most of the acres on the farms in my corner of the town. As a young man, I moved to nearby Rochester for a couple of years. When it came time to settle down and raise a family there was no question that I would return to country living. My new wife and I found a suitable home in the quiet Ontario County village of Bloomfield. Despite it being a village home, it seemed more like country to me with the large one-acre lot and open fields beyond. Our large village lot has a back yard that serves as an extension to the region’s wildlife range. Looking out our kitchen window we do not see another house but rather the simple beauty of the land. My first love is nature and being in the outdoors. Ontario County is still very much a rural county despite its close proximity to human development. The county is home to all that is wild and free. We raised two children that now share our love for the region and know that Ontario County will always be home to them. A place where they learned to swim in the waters of Canandaigua Lake and an open and enriching environment where they learned the values of community and life. They now have taken their place in the world at large, one as an art teacher and one as a forester.

Living as one with the land is what happiness is for me. Ontario County holds those values and will continue to influence generations to come.”

What wonderful places to spend a day on the water.

Pat Tobin – Victor Traveling around Ontario County in the Finger Lakes reminds me of why nature is so peaceful and good for our well-being. Ontario County touches on Livingston County where both counties are home to the Little Finger Lakes, Conesus, Hemlock, Canadice and Honeoye. What wonderful places to spend a day on the water. Public parks allow easy access.

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

What do I love? The valleys, the lakes, the hills, and the spacious fields of agriculture. Audrey Carrier – Honeoye I have been a resident for 57 years in the Finger Lakes area. As a child I lived in the Bristol Hills and in my teens in the Naples Valley. Now I reside in the hills overlooking Honeoye Lake. What do I love? The valleys, the lakes, the hills, and the spacious fields of agriculture. My parents and my brothers traveled from New York to the Redwoods camping, hiking and visiting our national parks. That created a desire to explore and discover as many states as I could. The more places I visited the more I appreciated this beautiful Finger Lakes Region. I am blessed to wake up every morning to this view of the sunrise across the valley, sometimes the clouds hovering over the village until the warmth of the sun kisses the trees and lake. The fields of corn and hay going on forever. We live, work and play in an area that has four seasons, ever-changing. A short hike, bike or snowmobile ride to any area will want you to come back for more. Whether you’re skiing down the slope or skipping across the water on one of the many lakes, the beauty around you takes your breath away. If you are tasting wine, beer or the bounty of our local farmers while driving from Seneca Lake to Honeoye Lake, your senses will be filled with intrigue, flavor and treasures. I chose this place where I want to live and where my family lives for work and play and we invite all to come visit with us.

Ruth & Jim Hundertmark - Geneva We are Jim and Ruth Hundertmark now residing in Ontario County in the Finger Lakes. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, the lure of the Western New York region was something that first brought us here many years ago on vacation to visit. Back then there were only a handful of wineries existing on Seneca Lake. Not only did we find the wineries and the people who operated them to be extremely knowledgeable and friendly, but after many conversations with these owners, their enthusiasm about the region and their lifestyle was something we envisioned for ourselves. Ontario County has four very distinct seasons. There is no more beautiful place to be in the fall. The county has many attractions to offer, from live waterfront concerts, wonderful restaurants, the many events at the local wineries and colleges, great theatre, and parks offering a diversity of wildlife & spectacular vistas of Seneca Lake. On one beautiful fall afternoon at a lakefront restaurant and after a few glasses of local wine a pact was made that not only one day we would be living here but we would also create a winery of our own. With much luck we purchased a small, 200-year old farm in Geneva in 2006 and

with the business-friendly climate and guidance from the town we were on our way to opening Lacey Magruder Winery. The name of the winery originated from our two Irish grandmothers. Three years of renovation to one barn used for our tasting room, another for winemaking, and a small vineyard planted allowed us to open in September, 2011. Living in Ontario County is like being on vacation year round. We are able to share our passion for the region and wine with the visitors to our winery.

Clair and Carol Schaffner – Geneva Ontario County, specifically Geneva, NY, was introduced to me via the US Air Force when I was stationed at Sampson Air Force Base. My destiny was to remain at Sampson all four years. When the fours years would end, I planned to return to my home state and become a teacher in Hershey, Pennsylvania, yes, Chocolate Town, USA! – chosen as my ideal community. When Carol and I married, she moved from Pennsylvania to Geneva and taught second grade in the original North Street School. When I was discharged a year later, I became a teacher in Waterloo and subsequently in Geneva. Geneva was rapidly becoming “home” to us, and we decided to remain here. We love the natural

27

beauty of Ontario County – the beautiful, calm, blue waters of Seneca Lake and how fierce, wild, and turbulent they become in a storm. We marvel at the spectacular sunrises and sunsets reflected in Seneca’s waters. We love the rolling vineyards on the perimeter of the lake. In autumn, when the clusters of grapes hang heavily on the vine, the fragrance saturates the atmosphere all around us. Winter snow paints panoramas of unmatched beauty. In summer, water skiing is my favorite pastime. Geneva offers the best in churches, schools, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Finger Lakes Community College, New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, library, hospital and medical facilities; I could go on and on. I have lived in the Geneva area for 61 years – do you suppose I may consider myself a native! At 83 years of age, I’ve given up my aspiration of living in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Carol and I consider Geneva our home, and we love it here in Ontario County!

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

50 years of pottery in the Finger Lakes

By AJ Shear

For the past 50 years, Jim Kozlowski has been making pottery in the Finger Lakes. And since 1979, he has been doing so as co-owner, along with his wife, Lois, of the Wizard of Clay Pottery in the town of Bristol. In 1977, following a 12-year career in the classroom, Jim left teaching art in the Greece Central School District in suburban Rochester, NY, and began making pottery full time. Two years later, Jim and Lois opened the Wizard of Clay Pottery.

877-386-4669

Jim built the first four geodesic dome buildings at the Wizard of Clay himself. Thirty-four years later, the business has seven employees, including his now part-owner son, Jamie, and 12-year-old grandson, Carver. “If I said name one potter who is making a living at pottery -- and I mean a living, not by having financial inheritance, not by having a spouse who is working, not by having a part-time job -- but making a living, feeding your children, taking care of people with the work of your hands -- with pottery alone,” said Jim, “there would not be many. I’m kind of a rare bird in that instance.”

Jim likes to reflect on words from a book called The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. “There is one line I think about almost every day, ‘Work is love made visible’. When I work, I am not just in love with the material; I am in love with my family. I want to share this with people, and my work is how I can show it.” He also draws inspiration from the Finger Lakes region. The Wizard of Clay’s signature pottery, Bristoleaf®, features imprints of real leaves from the Bristol area on the finished clay products. For Jim and his family, living in the Finger Lakes is a point of pride. “People are wonderful everywhere in the world. But this is home and the people are good here, and I wouldn’t think of living anywhere else,” said Jim. Jim estimates that he uses 60-80 thousand pounds of clay a year and has already surpassed making his onemillionth pot. He has speculated that if someone took all the clay he has used, made it into grapefruit sized balls and lined them up, the line would stretch from Bristol to Rochester, a distance of more than 30 miles. And Jim has no plans of stopping anytime soon. “It’s not work. It’s never a job. I am making pots for people to use. I am making pots as beautiful as I can make them, and that’s all I do. I sit down at the wheel and it all melts away and it’s so familiar, so comfortable,” said Jim. “It happens every day and I’ll continue to do it, hopefully until God says I can’t.”

History

in the Finger Lakes

11,000 years ago – Glaciers retreated and formed “the lakes”. 1794 - The Canandaigua Treaty is signed between the United States of America and the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy - Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk and Tuscarora. Today, celebrate this each November 11 at the Ontario County Courthouse and with visits to the Ontario County Historical Society and Ganondagan State Historic Site. 1817 - Construction of the Erie Canal began in New York State. Today, both Rose Hill Mansion and the Prouty-Chew Museum are conveniently situated with a view of Seneca Lake – our premier access point to the canal and canal history. 1830 - Seven years after Joseph Smith visited Hill Cumorah and found “the ancient record”, the Book of Mormon was printed in Palmyra, NY. Today, Hill Cumorah is the site of a state of the art visitors center and the annual pageant celebrating the Mormon religion. 1873 - Susan B. Anthony was tried and convicted at the Ontario County Courthouse for voting illegally. Just ten years before that, the first Lady Justice statue was erected and placed atop the Ontario County Courthouse to witness the event. Today, Historic Main Street Canandaigua is a great place to walk in Anthony’s footsteps! 1816, 1829, 1839, 1856, 1869, and 1887 - Granger Homestead,

Prouty-Chew Museum, Rose Hill Mansion, Foster Cottage Museum, Howe House, and Sonnenberg Mansion were constructed, respectively. Today, you can take their tours and learn about the special features of each home – from a carriage collection of over 70 horse drawn vehicles to a two story outhouse!

1945 - What today is known as Constellation Brands – was founded by Marvin Sands as Canandaigua Industries. It is the largest distributor of premium wines in the world. Today, big-name musicians from all over the world take the stage each summer season at Constellation Brands – Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC), which is also the summer home to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. 2012 – Outdoor sports have always been “hot” in the Finger Lakes. But, during the 2012 summer, our area took Olympic Gold - many times. Who has local roots? Meghan Musnicki (Canandaigua Academy grad, Naples, NY) – U.S. rowing team; Ryan Lochte (Bristol, NY native) – U.S. men’s swimming; and Abby Wambach – we all know that – U.S. women’s soccer! Trust us, there will be more of that history to come. They have lots of great land to practice on!

2013 – FLVC declares it the Year of Happiness. Help us make it come true with your visit this year!

The 1907 Bragdon House is a beautiful bed & breakfast located in the heart of Geneva, NY. The four-bedroom home is within minutes to Hobart & William Smith Colleges, local shops, pubs, and wonderful restaurants. Mother and daughter duo, Diana and Jennifer, run the Inn.

Victor’s Homewood Suites by Hilton features 90 rooms and suites, all with kitchenettes, so it’s easy to get comfortable in your home away from home! Located just moments from lush vineyards and wineries as well as local shopping in downtown Canandaigua or nearby Eastview Mall.

Q. How did you end up in the Finger Lakes, and what drew you to the Inn business?

Q. How did you end up in the Finger Lakes, and what drew you to the Hotel business?

A. We keep busy. Golfing at the different courses around the Finger Lakes is one of our favorite things, but we also enjoy biking the trails, hiking at the different falls around the lake, boating on Seneca, and possibly most important, exploring the wineries to see what is upcoming or just released so we can impart that knowledge on our guests. We highly encourage them to keep an open mind when visiting all of the wineries – they’re always surprised how many wines they enjoy. Of course, we love drinking our favorite Finger Lakes wines on the porch!

Q. What do visitors frequently comment on/ love about your property?

A. They feel right at home when they’re here. We often hear that coming to the Bragdon House is “just like visiting old friends”, because it’s such a comforting and inviting environment, and that’s what we strive to create. And they’re always stunned by the fantastic Seneca Lake views from the beautiful veranda!

Q. Favorite thing to do in your free time, and one thing you recommend to all visitors who come in? A. In the summer, I love to golf. Ravenwood is one of my favorites. If our visitors are golfers, I always suggest the fabulous “Finger Lakes Foursome” – they can play Ravenwood, Bristol Harbour, Mill Creek, and Grey Stone for a great value and get a great golfing experience. Not a golfer? I suggest our visitors go to at least one of our local wineries.

Q. What do visitors frequently comment on/ love about your property?

A. As cliché as it sounds, I often hear the same thing: ‘This is the friendliest staff I have ever met’. It’s a point of pride. There’s no better feeling than hearing that our hotel ‘is the best’ they’ve ever stayed at, or that it’s their ‘home away from home’.

A. The 1795 Acorn Inn is actually what drew me to the Finger Lakes. Being from the West Coast, I had never heard of the Finger Lakes before. When I found the Inn for sale, I started researching the area. Through tourism sites, such as the Finger Lakes Visitors Connection and others, I started to learn about the area. I figured wine, water, winter and so much more provided a great foundation to build a year-round business.

Q. Favorite thing to do in your free time, and one thing you recommend to all visitors who come in? A. I have so many favorite things to do and so little free time. When friends and family come to visit, we always go wine tasting. I love the drive to wineries, any time of year, but especially in the fall. I love the opportunity to always try new wines and talk to the vintners. And, now, of course, beer and spirits too!

Q. What do visitors frequently comment on/ love about your property?

A. Guests comment most frequently about how comfortable they are at the Inn and how every detail, large and small, has been thought about. I try to create an atmosphere where people can truly get away.

ht a

Q. Favorite thing to do in your free time, and one thing you recommend to all visitors who come in?

A. I grew up in New Hampshire, and started working with a hotel company at the age of 14. I am a second generation hotelier. The main reason I stay in the hospitality industry is the satisfaction I get in making people feel as comfortable as possible. Conrad Hilton (founder of the Hilton family of brands) once said that his “vision is to fill the Earth with the light and warmth of hospitality”. So each day I try to live up to that and create a warm, caring, comfortable, safe, and friendly environment for each of our guests.

Q. How did you end up in the Finger Lakes, and what drew you to the Inn business?

r version of our famo you us e k ha s Ma

A. We were both born and raised in Geneva, with a very large family surrounding us. I (Diana) was a part time Inn sitter in Skaneateles for five years, while Jennifer was living and working in Chicago. Upon her return in 2005 to the Finger Lakes, we saw the opportunity to open a B&B in our town and started off running and haven’t stopped. Our Inn really represents both of us, and we love the guests, conversations, and the opportunity to meet new people with different backgrounds every day.

The 1795 Acorn Inn is located in the Bristol Valley just a few miles from Canandaigua. The Acorn Inn is the only New York State bed & breakfast to receive the prestigious AAA Four-Diamond Award for over 15 consecutive years.

THE Finger Lakes HAPPINESS PROJECT

We love our

Lakes

One look from above and it’s easy to see why the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York deserves its name. The long slender bodies of water form a striking resemblance to the fingers of an outstretched hand. Native Americans believe the lakes were formed when the Great Spirit placed his hand on the land to bless it and left behind a divine handprint. Modern science credits the formation of the Finger Lakes to centuries-old glacial activity. However the lakes were formed, one thing is certain - those who live here and those who visit, share in the blessing of the breathtaking Finger Lakes Region.

Honeoye Lake – “Lying Finger” Honeoye is a prime fishing spot in the Finger Lakes, thanks to its pond-like ecosystem. In the winter, the water freezes quickly and maintains its solid surface through the season to become a playground for ice fishing, skating, and even ice boating. Length: 5 miles • Depth: 30 feet

Canadice Lake – “Long Lake” Perhaps named with a bit of humor, Canadice is quite tiny, but it packs a lot of natural beauty. Length: 3 miles • Depth: 91 feet

Hemlock Lake – “Sister Lake to Canadice” As the “sister lake” to Canadice, Hemlock Lake supplies drinking water to the city of Rochester. The tree-lined undeveloped setting of the sister shores creates a contrasting experience to the larger more populated lakes. Since these two are remote in setting, they’re both peaceful places to relax and enjoy nature. Length: 8 miles • Depth: 96 feet

Canandaigua Lake – “The Chosen Spot”

The reason why Canandaigua Lake is often called “the playground of the Finger Lakes” is obvious. The lake and surrounding area provide a host of recreational opportunities. It’s also where Squaw Island, a landmark off the lake’s north shore, is found. This tiny island was a former refuge to Seneca women and children. From its parks to vineyards to boat tours and more, Canandaigua Lake has something for everyone to enjoy. Length: 16 miles • Depth: 262 feet

Seneca Lake – “The Seneca Nation” Seneca Lake connects directly to the Atlantic Ocean through New York State’s Erie Canal System. At night, a drum-like beating can be heard across Seneca’s waters. Legend has it that the sound is the reverberations of our Native American ancestors’ drums. Science explains the mysterious beating as the escape of natural gas deposits from beneath Seneca’s deep waters. Its depth and size make Seneca Lake a favorite of sailing and diving enthusiasts. Length: 36 miles • Depth: 632 feet
