2011 OPENING OF NEW MUSEA Opening MAS May 17th 2011 Antwerp The new MAS is a new innovative and ambitious project related to a topical and active city museum in Antwerp. It has been built in Hanzestedenplaats, in the centre of the Eilandje district, the interface of city and port. MAS tells tales based on the amazing and diverse objects in the Municipal Collections, showcasing them in adapted presentations. The backbone is made up of the collections of the National Maritime Museum, the Museum for Regional Ethnology, the Ethnographic Museum, the Vleeshuis Museum and the collection of port-related maritime and industrial-archaeological objects dating from prehistory to the present. www.mas.be Picture Sarah Blee - © Neutelings Riedijk Architecten
EXHIBITIONS ANCIENT, CLASSIC AND MODERN ART Masterpieces in the MAS. Five centuries of images in Antwerp May 17th 2011 - December 31st 2012 Antwerp, MAS From Tuesday, 17 May 2011, the brand-new Antwerp museum, MAS | Museum aan de Stroom will welcome visitors to the prestigious exhibition, Masterpieces in the MAS. Five centuries of images in Antwerp. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA), the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (M HKA) and the Museum Plantin-Moretus/Prints Room (MPM / PK) demonstrate that Antwerp was always a leader in terms of visual culture with a series of undisputed masterpieces. The exhibition Masterpieces of the MAS. Five centuries of images in Antwerp examines the development of Western visual culture with masterpieces of old masters en contemporary artists. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Antwerp was considered a world centre for the development of imagery. Even today the visual arts created here have contributed to Antwerp’s global reputation as an international leading arts centre. www.mas.be © Koen van den Broek, Madonna, 2011
A Romantic perspective June 23rd - September 4th 2011 Leuven, Museum M Romantic painting in the middle of the 19th century is an often forgotten and even blighted art movement. Yet this art movement is well worth being explored. In the summer of 2011 M Leuven will present the collection of the Dutch television producer Jef Rademakers. During the past decades this art lover has acquired a select collection of Romantic paintings from the Netherlands. His collection of some 70 paintings will first be exhibited in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg (autumn 2010 – early 2011) and will subsequently travel to Leuven. The exhibition is thematically structured. The visitor is led along five specific subjects: the genre painting, the architecture painting, the landscape, the marine and the nocturne. With these genres the exhibition illustrates the forgotten aesthetical categories of the picturesque and the sublime. This exhibition is conceived as a spontaneous voyage of discovery of a ‘forgotten’ movement. With works of amongst others Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Eugène Verboeckhoven, Andreas Schelfhout,David de Noter, Jacob Abels,… www.mleuven.be © Rademakers collectie

Palazzo Rubens. The Master as Architect. September 10th 2011 – December 11th 2011 Antwerp, Rubenshuis The Rubens House is mounting a unique and exquisite exhibition in the autumn of 2011 about Peter Paul Rubens as architect, a relatively unkown facet of this versatile artist, who was an authority on ancient and contemporary Italian architecture. A scoop! The fact that Rubens was a connoisseur of architecture is, however, clear from his paintings. But he was additionally involved in high-profile Antwerp projects, like the extension of his spacious studio-residence and possibly also the building of the present-day St. Charles Borromeus church, considered by his contemporaries as ‘the eighth wonder of the world’. Rubens found inspiration in painter-architects such as Michelangelo and Giulio Romano and in Italian books devoted to architecture. The exhibition shows some fifty items on loan from major international museums. Some of the works of art from lesser-known collections have never before been on show to the general public. There will also be valuable books on architecture from Rubens’ own library on display together with work by Michelangelo, Giulio Romano and, of course, by the master himself. www.rubenshuis.be

October 29th 2011 – June 17th 2012 Tongeren, Gallo-Roman Museum In economic terms, Sagalassos was one of the most important cities in southern Turkey in Roman times. Only in the fourth century AD, after several earthquakes, epidemics of plague and invasions by foreign peoples did the city begin to lose something of its splendour. Eventually Sagalassos was abandoned altogether. However, its remote location high up in the mountains, and an erosion layer several metres thick protected the remains of the city against plundering and decay. Consequently, Sagalassos is extraordinarily well preserved and has even been described as the «Pompey of the East». Excavation work in Sagalassos carried out by a research team from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven led by Professor Marc Waelkens, began in the early 1990s. It is one of the largest and most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean region. The Gallo-Roman Museum has been keeping a close eye on the dig and in 2011 is mounting an exhibition about this now worldfamous Roman site. www.limburg.be/gallo
CONTEMPORARY ART Erwin Wurm May 29th – September 25th 2011 Antwerp, Middelheimmuseum Multi-faceted, surprising, humorous: all are perfect descriptions of the work of Austrian artist Erwin Wurm (b. 1954). Wurm is a sculptor in heart and soul, fascinated by volume, the human form, abstraction and figurative shapes. From 29 May to 25 September 2011, the Middelheim Museum will be a playground for contemporary artist Erwin Wurm. The Austrian artist will be placing 25 works among the pieces of the permanent collection. He is creating three new pieces for the Braem Pavilion. The exhibition WEAR ME OUT true voyage of discovery through the open-air museum, along which the visitor can wonder at Wurm’s expressive art, while at the same time becoming a part of it. Erwin Wurm has invited Antwerp fashion designer, Walter Van Beirendonck, to collaborate for the occasion. www.middelheimmuseum.be © Erwin Worm

Ommegang July 3rd and 5th 2011 Brussels, City Centre This great folkloric procession is one of the most important events in Brussels history and culture. Because the Ommegang recreates a famous celebration organised in 1549 on the Grand’Place in honour of Charles V and his son Philippe II. The whole of the royal court parades before your eyes in all its finery: more than 1,000 extras in period costume, dozens of horses, carts and giants. Horse-drawn carriages and flag throwers are also at the party in the magical setting of the Grand’Place. www.ommegang.be

2012 OPENING OF NEW MUSEA Opening of the new In Flanders Fields Museum June 2nd 2012 (with reservation) Ypres, In Flanders Fileds Museum The In Flanders Fields Museum as we know it today has been outgrowing itself for quite some time. After twelve years, we are therefore forced to adapt our permanent exhibition. The facts related to World War I remain the same, but our view of certain aspects has changed over the years. For example, we would like to actively involve the war landscape of the Westhoek region as a last remaining witness. Also, a lot of museum equipment has evolved. Finally, every day, we see how visitors want to increasingly fit their own personal, family or regional history into the bigger story. The new In Flanders Fields Museum tells the story of the experiences of man at war, and about the war as a general cultural and social phenomenon. The story is evoked through the latest multimedia techniques and in constant relationship to the leading historic witnesses of the war: objects, images and stories, as well as today’s landscape. www.inflandersfields.be
The Dossin Barracks: a new museum with international ambitions July 1st 2012 Mechelen, Dossin Barracks The Dossin Barracks is a unique place for remembrance in Belgium. As an ‘SS Sammellager Mecheln’ it was literally the antechamber of death for tens of thousands of Jews from Belgium and Northern France during the Second World War. A brand-new museum will be build in order to explain the historic significance of this location to current and future generations and to visualize themes such as racism, exclusion and human rights. The combination of human rights in our society with the history of the Holocaust in Belgium, moreover, infuses the Dossin Barracks project with European allure. The new museum’s unique design was created by former Flemish Master Architect, Bob Van Reeth. The Dossin Barracks will open its doors to the general public in the summer of 2012. www.kazernedossin.be

2012 EXHIBITIONS ANCIENT, CLASSIC AND MODERN ART Jordaens & The Antiques October 12th 2012 – January 27th 2013 Brussels, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium After the successful exhibition Rubens: A Genius at Work (14.09.2007-28.01.2008), the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels are planning a major exhibition on Jordaens and the Antique in 2012-2013. A second venue is planned from the end of February until the beginning of June at the Fridericianum (Museumlandschaft Hessen Kassel), site of the world-famous Documenta. Of the well-known Flemish trio “Rubens-Van Dyck-Jordaens,” Jacob Jordaens (Antwerp, 1593-1678) has been studied the least. The exhibition will present an entirely new picture of Jordaens. Instead of the painter of uncomplicated genre scenes – works like Twelfth Night, or The King Drinks, and As the Old Sing, So the Young Pipe – we find an artist intelligent enough to take over part of Rubens’s market share with lively mythological and antique scenes. Loans of around 80 paintings and drawings, tapestries and sculpture from major museums and little-known private collections from Spain (Prado), Denmark (Statens Museum for Kunst), the United Kingdom (Glasgow Museum and Art Gallery) and Austria (Albertina), supplemented with key works from Brussels and Kassel, will offer the public lesser known yet unexpectedly engaging episodes from classical antique sources – from Ovid’s Metamorphoses to Diogenes Laertius’s Lives and Opinions of Famous Philosophers. As was the case for the Rubens exhibition, Jordaens and the Antique represents four years of thorough scholarly research and a major restoration campaign. In the years leading up to the exhibition’s opening, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, Brussels, and the Museumlandschaft Hessen Kassel will be restoring the masterpieces by Jordaens in their own collections. www.fine-arts-museum.be

March 31 th - September 30th 2012 Flemish Coast After three successful editions of contemporary art at the sea, the coast will preparing a new edition under the name of Beaufort 04. What was an ingenious, but chance encounter a few years ago has since become a not-to-bemissed cultural event, when the seaside and contemporary art are reunited via monumental installations and intriguing works shown in the unique biotope of the dynamic coastal municipalities. The artworks are a reflection of what is happening right now on the international art platform. A considered choice of contemporary artists represented with new or existing work makes visitors to the coast participants in the highly imaginative world of the artists. Beaufort 04 hopes in this way to move visitors and encourage them to reflect. www.beaufort03.be
May 12th - September 16th 2012 Ghent, S.M.AK. and various other locations In 2011 the S.M.A.K. will be mounting a major exhibition in the city of Ghent. ‘Track’ will be the third part of the trilogy of which ‘Chambres d’Amis’ (1986) and ‘Over the Edges’ (2000) were the first two. The project draws on the methodology of the cross-section. A line is drawn straight through the city from point A to point B – the sort of line pilgrims and travellers followed for centuries as they cut straight through town centres en route to their next destination, until ring roads and motorways came along and ignored the towns altogether. The line serves as a ‘backbone’, a central nervous system of the urban fabric, from Dampoort to Sint-Pieters, or the other way round. www.smak.be

2012 Manifesta 9 June 10th - October 22nd 2012 Limburg In 2012, Manifesta, the European contemporary art biennale, will be coming to Limburg! After the Venice Biennale and Documenta in Kassel, Manifesta is the largest international contemporary art event. After such previous venues as Rotterdam (1996), Luxemburg (1998), Ljubljana (2000), Frankfurt (2002), San Sebastian (2004), Trentino-South Tyrol (2008) and Murcia (2010) the ninth of these nomadic art events will take place in the Limburg mining area. Manifesta seeks out the frontiers of Europe, and in the Province of Limburg this biennale takes inspiration from the fitful but fascinating history of a recent mining history. Limburg is a landscape undergoing transformation. Manifesta 9 will be an encounter between a historical mining past, industrial architecture, man-made landscapes, a multicultural society – Europe in miniature! – and contemporary art. At Manifesta 9 more than 200 young, international artists will be creating an unmissable whole that will strike an international chord. The setting is the Waterschei mine site, with an area of more than 20,000 sq. m. The superb Art Nouveau mine building will be reopened for the first time since its closure in 1987: past, present and future will come together in Genk. www.manifesta.org

2014 TOPEVENT Commemorating the centenary of the Great War (2014 – 2018) Flanders The First World War or the ‘Great War’ was the first global conflict. It lasted from 28 July 1914 until 11 November 1918. Millions of soldiers and civilians died in the process. One hundred years after these events we are still convinced that the events of 1914-1918 have had a fundamental impact on our society and that the victims of this horrible war deserve a worthy tribute. That is why Flanders is working towards the commemoration of the Great War and why it will try to incorporate the centenary anniversary of these events in a broader frame of ‘war and peace’, ‘remembrance and realisation’,‘European cooperation’, etc. so that we can interpret our past and learn for the future.
