MAIN STREET

Since 1799, Franklin’s Main Street has been the heart of our 16-block historic district, and its architecture tells a fascinating story! Along this street, you’ll find boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, bars, and more, all housed in gorgeous buildings from the Federal, Victorian, and Art Deco periods. Many still have fascinating historic details inside, like bloodstains and cannon ball indentations from the Battle of Franklin in 1864.

Don’t miss: Culaccino Italian Restaurant, Hester & Cook

LEIPER’S FORK

Although this quaint, walkable village is less than 10 miles from downtown Franklin, it feels wonderfully far away from the modern world. Spend an afternoon browsing Leiper’s Fork’s shops for antiques and local art, listen to some of the area’s best singers and songwriters at Fox & Locke, tour Leiper’s Fork Distillery, or simply settle back in a rocking chair and enjoy the scenery and the slower pace of life.

Don’t miss: David Arms Gallery, open mic night at Fox & Locke

THE FRANKLIN HOP TOUR

NATCHEZ TRACE PARKWAY

Did you know one of the most scenic drives in the nation runs right through Williamson County? The 444-mile federally protected Natchez Trace Parkway starts in Nashville, winds through Franklin, and continues all the way to Natchez, Mississippi, with plenty of stunning overlooks, hiking trails, historic sites, and waterfalls along the way. Spend a few minutes or a few hours driving on the parkway to be rewarded with incredible views of nature and maybe even a few wild animal sightings! From downtown Franklin, head 10 miles down Highway 96 West until you see the iconic double-arch Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge

Don’t miss: Timberland Park and the Fall Hollow waterfalls

CIVIL WAR ATTRACTIONS

The bloody Battle of Franklin happened on November 30, 1864, but evidence of this pivotal Civil War event can still be seen all over Franklin. Step back into the past and understand the battle’s impact with an immersive tour of Franklin’s three Civil War-era homes open to the public.

Start at Carnton, a carefully preserved estate built in 1826 that served as the town’s largest field hospital after the battle was over. Next, at the nearby Lotz House, you’ll learn how German immigrant Johann Albert Lotz and his family survived the bloody Battle of Franklin as it played out on their front lawn. Finally, head across the street to Carter House to learn how another local family endured the battle hidden away in their cellar.

Don’t miss: Eastern Flank Battlefield Park and the annual Battle of Franklin commemoration events in November

THE FACTORY AT FRANKLIN

Just a mile from downtown, you’ll find The Factory at Franklin, a lovingly restored 1929 stove factory that’s recently been expanded into an exciting hub of shopping, dining, live music, and shows. Williamson County has a rich but nearly forgotten history of distilling whiskey. Leiper’s Fork Distillery has brought back this lost art using a process that mimics that of the 1850s and leverages locally grown grains. This wouldn’t have been possible without H Clark Distillery —now Company Distilling in Thompson’s Station—paving the way as the first legal distillery in the county in over 100 years. The distillery’s founder was instrumental in creating legislative changes that permitted new Tennessee distilleries to operate. You can experience these artisan processes firsthand on the Masters & Makers Trail, which guides visitors along more than 70 miles of scenic roads and showcases the best beer, wine, and spirits all produced from beginning to end within Williamson County. Along with Leiper’s Fork Distillery and Company Distilling, the trail includes Arrington Vineyards, Nolensville’s Mill Creek Brewing Co., and Franklin’s Curio Brewing Co. As an added bonus, download Visit Franklin’s Masters & Makers Digital Passport and complete four of the five stops on the trail to redeem a special reward at the Visitor Center Ready to sample more? Sip on local libations at these recommended spots:

STABLE RESERVE: Housed in a former livery stable, this downtown distillery includes a full coffee bar and craft cocktails.

WHEELER’S RAID DISTILLERY: Nolensville’s only distillery features bourbon and rye, along with ready-to-drink cocktails! Enjoy tours, craft cocktail classes, and live music!

SAINT GOOSE: Be sure to stop and savor this beautifully curated wine and gift shop that offers whiskey and cigar experiences in downtown Franklin.

HOP HOUSE TN TAPS: This Franklin taphouse keeps things local with 30 rotating options from Tennessee breweries and six regional rotating taps.

What sets a good whiskey and a great whiskey apart isn’t about the tasting notes or the receptacle in which it’s been matured. It’s about the company you share it with and the moments you make in the midst of sharing. That’s where Company Distilling’s stands—in fact, it’s the reason for their namesake.

After adding eight new products to the Jack Daniel’s portfolio from 2010 to 2020, Master Distiller Jeff Arnett started thinking about how to build his own brand and the legacy he would leave behind for the industry. As the wheels of innovation turned within, Jeff became the first master distiller to leave Jack Daniels without passing on or retiring. He set out on a new chapter, one that would be wood-finished and steeped in friendship. And thus, Company Distilling took root.

Whether you’ve been a bourbon aficionado for years or you’re new to the whiskey world, we’re here to tell you that the only real mistake you can make in enjoying Company Distilling products is in keeping them all to yourself. The company you keep while enjoying your whiskey was so important that it had to end up in the name. The team at Company is an assemblage of friends with a history of building distilleries, crafting exceptional spirits, and bringing people together.

Williamson County’s first legal distillery in over 100 years, Company Distilling is located just outside of Franklin in the charming town of Thompson’s Station. The distillery offers tastings, a signature cocktail menu, and tours. They craft their spirits in the same building local farmers used to house grains before loading them on the railroad for sale generations ago. Their award-winning Ghost Rail Tennessee Dry Gin is distilled and bottled exclusively at their Thompson’s Station location, using just six botanicals.

Company Distilling knows that the company you keep enhances every sip of drink. They craft the flavor, but you’re responsible for the setting it’s consumed in. So, the next time you bring good company together, keep Company Distilling in mind. They know a thing or two about what makes a moment great and encourage you to craft the perfect sippable moment yourself.

On November 30, 1864, the bloody Battle of Franklin left more than 10,000 casualties and changed this town forever. The effects of the battle can still be seen throughout Franklin, and each year, thousands of visitors come to learn more about the fateful day that marked a devastating loss for the Confederate Army. But there’s more to Franklin’s history than the Civil War, and it was a story that wasn’t often told until recently. The history of Franklin’s African American residents includes enslavement, brutality, lynching, and, ultimately, survival against the odds. Local residents have worked with city leaders to make sure that part of Franklin’s history is shared. The project has become known as “The Fuller Story.”

Guided experiences at Franklin’s historic homes tell the story of the battle from the perspective of the people who lived here, lost loved ones, and tended to wounded soldiers after the battle was over. Carnton and Carter House are within minutes of downtown Franklin. Both include general guided tours as well as specialty tours that allow visitors to explore topics like the enslaved people of Franklin and get behind-the-scenes looks at the homes.

In Spring Hill, tours of Rippa Villa detail the bloody events that took place in the hours before the Battle of Franklin through the eyes of the family who once lived on the grand estate. Lotz House Museum

Straight down Columbia Avenue from downtown Franklin, you’ll find Lotz House, TripAdvisor’s highestrated Franklin attraction. Tours here detail the fascinating story of German immigrant Johann Albert Lotz, a master carpenter and piano maker who remained neutral during the Civil War and lived through the Battle of Franklin alongside his young family. In addition to learning the unique tale of how the battle impacted the lives of the children who lived here, visitors are also treated to up-close looks at furniture and woodwork handcrafted by Lotz, who was responsible for the mantels and wood carvings in Franklin’s downtown courthouse. Lotz built his home to showcase the different styles of woodwork he was capable of producing for customers, resulting in an architectural style you won’t find anywhere else!

In addition to general daily tours, Lotz House also offers ghost tours and women’s history tours, as well as antique appraisals.
