Il-Milied f’Għawdex niċċelebrawh b’ferħ ġenwin u għalhekk irridu nwassluh għand dawk kollha li se jagħżlu lil Għawdex għal dan iż-żmien sabiħ tas-sena.

Christmas celebrations in Gozo are true and genuine and we want to convey this message to all those who visit the island during this beautiful time of the year.

Is-solennità, it-tradizzjonijiet u t-talenti varji tal-Għawdxin qed jinġabru fi programm dettaljat, ikkoordinat mill-Ministeru għal Għawdex. Irridu nassiguraw li kull min jagħżel lil Għawdex għall-Milied ikollu għażla varjata ta’ attivitajiet reliġjużi, kulturali, folkloristiċi u ta’ divertiment mifruxa madwar il-gżira kollha, u f’atmosfera mill-isbaħ.

The solemnity, traditions, and various talents of the Gozitans are being gathered in a detailed programme, coordinated by the Ministry for Gozo. The Ministry has coordinated this detailed program to ensure a variety of activities ranging from religious, cultural, folkloristic and other entertaining events all around Gozo.

Iċ-ċelebrazzjonijiet jiftħu b’mod uffiċjali b’ċerimonja ta’ inawgurazzjoni fejn jinxtegħlu d-dwal tal-Milied u jiġu fi tmiemhom bil-Miġja tal-Maġi. Għawdex sar destinazzjoni mfittxija matul is-sena kollha iżda rridu nassiguraw li dawn il-festi jkunu u jibqgħu attrazzjoni ewlenija. Dan grazzi għall-ħidma kbira li ssir mill-għaqdiet tagħna fil-lokalitajiet u minn talenti oħrajn li għandna f’Għawdex.

The celebrations will officially commence with the lighting of Christmas decorations along the main localities of Gozo, including Victoria, and come to an end with the Epiphany, a feast celebrated in various villages on the island.

Although Gozo has become a sought-after destination all year round, we still want that Christmas festivities retain their prominence. This Christmas market will feature the “Fiera tal-Milied”, where one will find stalls selling artisanal artefacts and typical Maltese food and beverage related to this season. Dawk preżenti jistgħu jsegwu anke reenactment mill-Gran Mastru tal-Ordni ta’ San Ġwann imtella’ mix-Xagħra Historical Reenactment Organization. For another year a Christmas Market is going to be organised by the Għaqda Volontarjat Festa Marija Bambina where the public will find stalls selling local crafts and a variety of food and plants. Nhar il-Ħamis, 12 ta’ Diċembru fit-8:00pm, il-Fondazzjoni Santa Ċeċilja se torganizza kunċert ta’ mużika sagra taħt id-direzzjoni ta’ Mro. Antoine Mercieca. Nhar is-Sibt, 14 ta’ Diċembru fis-6:30pm, numru ta’ tfajliet b’ilbies abjad, faxxa ħamra ma’ qaddhom u b’xemgħa f’idejhom jakkumpanjaw tfajla b’kuruna bix-xemgħat fuq rasha u dawn flimkien jimxu minn ħdejn il-ħuġġieġa safejn il-knisja biex isellmu lill-Patruna tagħhom. Wara jitqassmu pasti ta’ Santa Luċija lil dawk preżenti. A festival spread over two days, organized by Ta’ Klula Cultural Group, is held in honour of Santa Luċija V.M. (the Patron Saint from which the village’s name is derived). On Thursday, 12th December, the Santa Cecilja Foundation under the direction of Mro. Antoine Mercieca will be hosting a sacred music concert at the village’s church at 8:00pm. On Saturday, 14th December at 6:30pm, girls dressed in white with a red sash will accompany an older girl wearing a crown of lit candles in a procession starting from a bonfire to the church to give honour to their Patron Saint. Afterwards traditional buns will be distributed to those present.

Friday, 13th and Saturday, 14th December, at 8:00pm - Band marches along the main streets of this picturesque hamlet accompanied by a fireworks display. Sunday, 15th December at 9:00am - a Solemn Mass will be celebrated. At 5:00pm, a procession with the ex-voto statue of St. Lucy V.M., accompanied by fireworks as well as band marches. This event is being organised by the Santa Luċija Parish.

The Annual Christmas Concert, organised by Chorus Urbanus Productions, has established itself as one of the major cultural attractions in the Christmas cultural calendar. This year’s 22nd Edition, will form part of the ‘Feel the Magic’ project that is supported by the Malta Arts Council and the Ministry for Gozo (Gozo Cultural Support Programme). This concert offers a spectacular moment of entertainment which will entice the festive spirit to form an enchanting dreamworld for the whole family. The 4th Edition of this Christmas event is open for children and families. It includes carols, marches, dances, games, and other exciting surprises. Photos with Santa will be available in Santa’s House within the Christmas Village. This event is free of charge. In case of inclement weather, the event will take place on the 20th of December.

F’dan il-Pageant jieħdu sehem fih kważi nofs il-popolazzjoni tar-raħal ta’ San Lawrenz u jiġi esegwit fid-djar tar-residenti stess. Personaġġi b’kostumi Bibbliċi se jkunu qed jirrakkontaw l-ikbar ġrajja li qatt seħħet. Fl-aħħar fil-pjazza jsir spettaklu tal-Milied bi 3D mal-faċċata tal-knisja. Dan il-Pageant qed jiġi organizzat bil-kollaborazzjoni talMinisteru għal Għawdex. This will be the 51st year of the Christmas Pageant. It narrates the story of Salvation: from Creation to the Birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ. Almost half the population of the village takes part in this pageant and it is performed in the main roads and residential homes. Actors in biblical costumes narrate the greatest story ever told. Finally, in the main square there will be a 3D Spectacle with the Parish Church’s façade serving as a background. This pageant is organized in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo. Il-wasla trijunfali tat-Tliet Slaten Maġi rekbin fuq iż-żwiemel isseħħ ġewwa Pjazza Vitorja fix-Xagħra fejn il-pubbliku jara lill-Familja Mqaddsa, bir-rgħajja joffru r-rigali tagħhom filwaqt li l-Maġi jaduraw lil Ġesù Bambin. “La Cavalcata dei Re Magi” mill-ġdid se tiġi organizzata mill-Għaqda l-Milied fix-Xagħra fi ħdan il-Paroċċa ta’ Marija Bambina bil-kollaborazzjoni tax-Xagħra Historical Reenactment Organisation, Ministeru għal Għawdex u l-Kunsill Lokali tax-Xagħra. La Cavalcata dei Re Magi (The Arrival of the Three Kings) will be held on the solemnity of the feast of the Epiphany, at Victory Square in front of the Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady, Xagħra. During the event the Holy Family will make their way to the parvis followed by five shepherds who pay homage to Baby Jesus. The Three Wise Men in oriental biblical outfits arrive on horseback accompanied by servants carrying the three biblical presents – gold, incense and myrrh and present their gifts to Baby Jesus while paying him homage. The reenactment will be organised by the Għaqda l-Milied fix-Xagħra with the collaboration of the Xagħra Historical Reenactment Organisation, Xagħra Parish, Ministry For Gozo and the Xagħra Local Council. 36

The Three Kings will depart on horseback from a yet-to-be announced destination in Europe on Thursday, 2nd of January. The journey continues on the Feast of the Epiphany as they depart from a village in Malta on Sunday morning. Later that afternoon they will embark the Gozo Ferry and finally make their triumphal entrance in the Nativity Village of Bethlehem in Għajnsielem to pay homage to Baby Jesus. On Sunday, 1st December, the art exhibition will be officially inaugurated by the Hon. Dr Justyne Caruana, Minister for Gozo, followed by a presentation from the artist. There will also be guided tours around the art spaces, underground cellars, winery, olive press and other production areas.

Mondays to Sundays:

Presentation of the exhibition will be held every Saturday in December by the artist himself from 11:00am to 12:00pm.

For another year a Christmas exhibition will be held by Għaqda Ħbieb Presepju Nadur, where local artists’ will display Christmas related items and artefacts.

Dan il-presepju ħaj hu mifrux fuq medda art ta’ 20,000 metru kwadru fl-inħawi magħrufa bħala Ta’ Passi. Bħas-snin l-imgħoddija dan il-presepju ħaj se jkun qed joffri taħlita ta’ tradizzjonijiet u snajja’ lokali flimkien ma’ dak kollu li ġeneralment nassoċjawh mal-presepju tradizzjonali Malti. L-attrazzjonijiet prinċipali f’dan il-villaġġ tan-Natività jinkludu l-furnar, il-mastrudaxxa, il-ħaddied, id-dverna, il-kamra tal-fwejjaħ, suq tal-ħxejjex u tal-artiġġjanat, ilqiegħa u d-diversi għelieqi bir-rgħajja u l-annimali. Wieħed jista’ jaqsam minn pont u jitla’ fuq dgħajsa li se tkun mixja tul din ix-xmara li hemm ħdejn ix-xatt tas-sajjieda, jew jipprova hands-on uħud millinġenji li kienu jużaw missirijietna fil-biedja. The 11th edition of the greatest story ever told - the tale of the Nativity where one can experience a live crib spread over 20,000 square metres of land in the area known as Ta’ Passi. Bethlehem f’Għajnsielem has always managed to offer all the ingredients for a memorable experience where the Maltese folklore and traditions are intertwined with the Maltese crib. Throughout these years, the event has managed to attract international attention as a top 10 worldwide Christmas destinations. Once again, the main attractions include the carpenter and blacksmith’s dwellings, the bakery, an open-air market selling seasonal fruits, fish and a wide selection of vegetables, a local crafts area promoting traditional skills and folklore, a tavern, a farmhouse with panoramic roof, the room of scents and the Bethlehem Inn. One can also embark on a Maltese boat across the river. The Castrum Romanum will again host the Roman Garrison who will also be patrolling the streets of Bethlehem collecting taxes and taking the census as decreed by the Emperor of Rome. Several other reenactments and live events will also be taking place during the hours of animation. Children will have the opportunity to try several hands-on tools while families can enjoy the unique surroundings of the Maltese countryside or try some local savouries. Finally, the last stop and the highlight of this journey is the Grotto where a poor unknown couple is tending their newly-born Baby Jesus with a donkey and a cow close by. Ix-xena ta’ Grecio, il-pajjiż li fih San Franġisk għamel l-ewwel presepju ħaj fl-Italja, teħodna biex niggustaw il-ġrajja tas-Salvazzjoni f’dan ilpresepju mekkanizzat. Madwar il-grotta ta’ Bethlehem - li fiha l-Madonna tippreżentalna l-Bambin filwaqt li San Ġużepp iqim l-Misteru ħaj - insibu diversi xenarji li fihom nilmhu attività kontinwa li toħloq għalina ħeġġa biex niskopru s-sabiħ tal-ħafna pasturi movimentati. The scene of Grecio, where St. Francis made the first live crib in Italy, is presented in this mechanical crib, bringing back fond memories of the Salvation story. Around Bethlehem’s Grotto - where the Virgin Mary presents us with Baby Jesus whilst St. Joseph worships the living Mystery - we find various scenarios in which we see a continuous activity that leads us to discover the beauty of the moving figurines.

The works vary from cribs built in rustic and stalagmitic stones in the typical local style with some of them having mechanical features and figures set in motion, to those crafted in expanded polystyrene and plaster on biblical style and others made in ceramics, mixed media and also a baroque Neapolitan crib. Il-wirja tiftaħ kuljum, inklużi nhar il-Milied u l-Ewwel tas-Sena, u tkun magħluqa lejliet il-Milied u l-Ewwel tas-Sena.

Wirja ta’ presepji u grotti tal-Milied, kemm tradizzjonali kif ukoll bi stili differenti, flimkien ma’ wirja varjata ta’ artiġġjanat tal-Milied.

Hon. Dr Justyne Caruana, Minister for Gozo, will inaugurate this exhibition on Wednesday, 18th December at 7:00pm. Can. Fr Mikiel Borg, Ecclesiastical Assistant to the Għaqda Ħbieb tal-Presepju Għawdex-Malta 1985, will bless the exhibition. Following this, the Minister will be presenting certificates to the competitors.

A display of traditional cribs representing the Nativity scene in different styles, together with an artisanal Christmas crafts display.

The exhibition will be open daily, including on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, but will be closed on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
