Barton arrived at Antietam with supplies she had personally collected, including bandages, food, and medicine. Sculpted in bronze by world-renowned artist, Tony Mendez.
RITCHIE HISTORY MUSEUM
During World War II, Fort Ritchie served as a training ground for a unique group of young men called the Ritchie Boys. These individuals were Jewish immigrants from Germany and Austria who were fluent in German and other European languages. They were trained in intelligence gathering, interrogation, and deception techniques, and they played a crucial role in the Allied victory in Europe. The Ritchie Boys’ story is now commemorated at the Ritchie History Museum. The museum’s exhibits highlight the role of Fort Ritchie in World War II, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. Located at 14319 Barrick Ave, Highfield-Cascade, MD 21719, the museum is dedicated to preserving the history of Fort Ritchie, a decommissioned US Army post. Historic Neighborhoods
Contributed by Heidi Schlag
Explore Hagerstown’s neighborhoods, where historic architecture mixes with local charm to tell stories of the town’s past.
The colonial town of its birth still hides within, if you know where to look – the Jonathan Hager House Museum is a good place to start, or you can trace the original 1762 town plat located within its Historic District.
But Hagerstown flourished during the 1870s through the start of World War II in its role as “Hub City,” when the B&O Railroad brought prosperity to town via industries like flour and grist milling; furniture, knit goods, and organ manufacturing; and machine repair. Today’s neighborhoods reflect the wealth that flowed into Hagerstown during those boom years.
City Center
The ornate Italianate and Beaux Arts commercial buildings lining the City Center of Hagerstown provide a glimpse of the town during the gilded turn of the century. Thriving hotels and businesses replaced smaller colonial and early American buildings as industry poured into Hub City in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Today, these grand buildings, which retain much of their architectural detail, house charming shops and dining establishments lining North Potomac, South Potomac, and West Washington streets. The area’s centerpiece – the recently-renovated Maryland Theater – hosts a variety of performing arts events throughout the year in its historic 1915 auditorium.
Jonathan Street Neighborhood
Smaller enclaves on the outskirts of the commercial district exhibit their own character. A few blocks north is North Jonathan Street, one of Maryland’s oldest African American neighborhoods. Because segregation laws restricted the movement of African Americans after the Civil War, a Black community settled into this five-block area centered around Jonathan Street. It will be anchored by the soonto-come Doleman Black Heritage Museum. Visitors today can drive past an 1830s small log cabin recently saved from demolition; Asbury United Methodist Church, the oldest African American church in Hagerstown; Wheaton Park; and a plaque commemorating the Harmon Hotel, a Black-owned business that hosted baseball player Willie Mays and other legendary African Americans. It was the only hotel open to Blacks in Hagerstown at that time.
Greenwood District
A few blocks south of the commercial district, where E. Baltimore intersects S. Potomac, the Greenwood District is springing up as a business and artist incubator. A larger-than-life mural of African American lawyer Buck Colbert Franklin graces the building of Les Cookies Delight Bakery, where you can grab an allergy-free sweet. You could also take an art class at SoDo Arts, browse the Blooms Alley artisan market, or pick up some tunes at Hub City Vinyl, before checking out a live band in the venue’s brand new performing space.
South Prospect Street District
The tree-lined South Prospect Street District, southwest of City Center, got its start in 1832 and was gradually populated by an eclectic mix of nineteenth-century architectural styles, including Neoclassical, Victorian Gothic, Italianate, Second Empire, Georgian Revival, and a significant group of Queen Anne homes. A “dry bridge” that spans Antietam Street features an ornamental metal
Potomac-Broadway District
The Potomac-Broadway District, running north of City Center along North Potomac Street, Broadway, and North Avenue, is an historic architecture-lover’s dream. Depending on the block, you can see Victorian mansions mingled with Colonial Revivals and American Foursquares, along with more modest urban townhouses and apartments. The homes in the Potomac-Broadway District were built during the industrial boom to house the clerks, mid-level executives, and craftsmen who made their living in Hagerstown’s thriving factories and businesses. Several impressive churches and community service buildings, including the Junior Fire Co., YMCA building, and former National Guard Armory, still stand in this neighborhood, which today is largely residential.
Laid out by the widow of Maryland Governor William T. Hamilton, Oak Hill took shape as the first and only neighborhood in Hagerstown to embrace the garden city movement popular at the beginning of the twentieth century. The homes, ranging in architectural style from Tudor Revival to Queen Anne to Arts and Crafts Bungalow, were built for the wealthiest men in Hagerstown and were surrounded by green open spaces, deep set-backs, and tree-lined streets. Oak Hill sits north of both City Center and Potomac-Broadway, allowing company presidents and CEOs to escape the hustle and bustle of those more crowded areas for their luxurious abodes. The homes remain today as a testament to Hagerstown’s prosperous history.

Once referred to by the Baltimore Sun as “Maryland’s Connection to ARGO’s Ben Affleck,” Antonio Tobias (Toby) Mendez is a Maryland based sculptor with over 25 years of experience creating significant works of art. Toby apprenticed with the
Academy Award winning makeup sculptor John Chambers. He then entered the Art Institute of Chicago where he learned the processes of bronze casting practiced by sculptors and fine art foundries for centuries. In 1988, Toby set up his studio in the Maryland/DC area. Toby primarily focuses on the figure, combining a classical approach with a contemporary eye for site design. Toby’s untiring work as a sculptor for over 25 years, allows for the unique sensibility and insight in his work. This is well noted in his public works such as his Thurgood Marshall Memorial and The Teammates for the Boston Red Sox.

The Underground Railroad in Hagerstown
From the 1740s through the Civil War era, slavery was part of life in Washington County. In 1820, about 14% of the county’s population, or 3,200 people, were enslaved. When the Civil War broke out, almost 1,500 people were still enslaved in the county. Slavery was finally abolished in Maryland in November 1864.
Over the long period of slavery, many Washington Countians fled from bondage. Escapes were common and most of the help that freedom-seekers received locally was from free people of color.
Existing mainly in northern states, a network of activists known as the Underground Railroad helped people escape from slavery to safety. At times the Underground Railroad did
stretch into Western Maryland.

At Thick-N-Thin, there’s no stuffiness. No pompousness. No attitude. You know what there is? A lot of craft beer, seltzers, even zero-alcohol options. And a lot of good times. Our beer ranges from the thick, which are the heavier, hoppier, darker ones. The thin are the lighter, easier drinking ones. We love them both. And all of them between. You will, too.
