Harrogate The elegant spa town of Harrogate was once the favoured destination of European high society. Those wealthy visitors of yesteryear have left a legacy of extravagant hotels, elegant architecture, green open spaces and beautiful parks. The spa heritage can still be enjoyed at the luxurious Turkish Baths. Wander through the charming Montpellier Quarter for independent shops, galleries, cafÊs and bars. Find leading designer brands and high street shops and over 130 restaurants on the treelined avenues and don’t forget afternoon tea at one of the many lovely tearooms including the world famous Bettys. Ripon galleries, the Royal Pump Room Museum and the International Festivals programme, Harrogate has a vibrant cultural offer and for those that enjoy gardens there is the famed Valley Gardens which leads up to RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Just up the road is the historic village of Ripley with its Castle and Gardens.

Ripon is a hidden gem. It is a small and unspoilt cathedral city with an awe-inspiring Cathedral that dates back to the 7th century, along with three museums including a well-preserved Workhouse, The Courthouse and the Prison and Police Museums. Its cobbled streets are lined with independent shops, galleries and tearooms and there is a picturesque canal for waterside walks. Enjoy the spectacle of Ripon Races or explore the many nearby visitor attractions including the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal, Newby Hall, Lightwater Valley Theme Park and the weirdly shaped natural landscape of Brimham Rocks. Boroughbridge

Knaresborough

Equidistant between London and Edinburgh, Boroughbridge was once an important staging post. With a thriving high street of independent shops, pubs and restaurants, the tradition of hospitality remains, making it a great stopping off point for any traveller. Three standing stones lie on the outskirts, one taller than any at Stonehenge and a leisurely walk along the river to the pretty village of Aldborough takes you to the Roman town of Isurium Brigantum where two spectacular mosaic pavements are among the finds on display.

Beneath a dramatic viaduct lies Knaresborough, a picturesque little market town. Built into the side of a rocky gorge, cobbled paths and stone staircases weave up and down between the riverside boats and cafés and the ruins of Knaresborough Castle towering above. Cafés, pubs, galleries, the Kings Tower and Courthouse Museum and a unique selection of independent shops can be found scattered in and around the Market Place and a colourful public art trail of trompe l’oeils tells the history of the town. Across the river is the curious Mother Shipton’s Cave and Petrifying Well but watch out, you could be turned to stone.

Nidderdale

Nidderdale, in the Yorkshire Dales, is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Protected due to its distinctive character and attractive landscape, it features miles of dry stone walls, wild moorland and rolling green pastures. The spectacular scenery combined with charming villages offering great pubs, tearooms and little local shops makes it a lovely area for exploring on foot or by bike. 12 reservoirs teem with wildlife and offer great fishing and walking while fascinating landmarks leave clues about a once vibrant industrial economy.

Pateley Bridge Masham In the heart of Nidderdale, nestled among the green slopes, lies the picturesque town of Pateley Bridge. A great base for walkers, cyclists and climbers, it offers an array of pubs, tearooms and specialist shops offering culinary delights. Adventures big and small await at How Stean Gorge and Studfold Trails or watch artists at work at King Street Workshops. Walk through the giant sculpture at nearby Coldstones Cut or visit the museum for some local social history.

Masham, a traditional farming town famous for its breweries and huge annual sheep fair. Around the wide Georgian market square is an inviting selection of pubs, cafĂŠs, shops and galleries. The perfect base for exploring the Dales, a network of paths and bridleways leads you out into stunning countryside. Nearby is the historic semi-natural woodland of Hackfall with its curious follies, grottoes and surprise views and the Druids Temple, another folly, built to resemble Stonehenge.

Enjoy Arts & Culture JMW Turner, Lewis Carroll and Wilfrid Owen are among the many who have been inspired by this beautiful district so it is not surprising that a vibrant arts scene continues today. Catch a blockbuster exhibition in Harrogate, enjoy sculpture in stately gardens or discover local talent blossoming in one of the little side street galleries which can be found across the district. See a local artist at work in Pateley Bridge or walk through Yorkshire’s biggest public artwork at Coldstones Cut and admire the heady views.

Famous for its festivals, the district offers year round performances including The Harrogate International Festivals, the renowned Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival and the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival. There are classical music festivals in Ripon and in Aldborough, an entertainment and visual arts festival in Knaresborough and arts festivals in Masham and Pateley Bridge to name but a few. Harrogate Theatre and the Royal Hall both offer a packed programme of many art forms from concerts to comedy. Open air performances in beautiful places are a popular feature of the summer.

Enjoy Castles & Cathedrals, Abbeys & Museums This part of the world has seen some eventful times so if you’re looking for history you’ll find echoes of the past wherever you go. The dramatic ruins of Fountains Abbey are the largest in the country, and together with the surrounding water garden, deer park and Elizabethan manor house form a beautiful World Heritage Site. This atmospheric spot is a must see for every visitor. Nearby are also Bolton Abbey and Jervaulx Abbey. The magnificent Ripon Cathedral is a staggering feat of faith and craftsmanship going back centuries. First built in the 7th century, it has a Saxon

Crypt and carved choirstalls which are said to have inspired Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland. Of the many medieval castles in the area, Skipton Castle is one of the most complete in England. The last royal stronghold of the civil war, it is often brought to life with re-enactments. You can also visit the spectacular craggy ruins of Knaresborough Castle which loom over the River Nidd – it is not hard to see why JMW Turner was inspired to paint the scene. Take tours of the Kings Tower and visit the Museum or look out for one of their re-enactments too. Situated in the pretty village of Ripley is Ripley Castle. Spofforth Castle is a hidden gem to explore and is reported to be where rebel barons drew up the Magna Carta 1215.

Enjoy Spas, Shopping & Afternoon Tea When William Slingsby discovered a drinking well in 1571, little did he realise he would shape the future history of what is now the famous spa town of Harrogate. 88 springs were found across the town and as the great and the good of European Society flocked to take the waters, Harrogate’s association with health and leisure went from strength to strength. We might not offer a Plombiere Douche or electric hydrotherapy any longer but today’s visitor can still enjoy a variety of spa packages and treatments, whether your preference is for 18th century grandeur, countryside luxury or modern boutique. Choose from a choice of steam rooms, aromatherapy experiences, state of the art

facilities or the original Turkish Baths which have been fabulously restored to their former grandeur. After some serious pampering what could be nicer than a leisurely lunch or afternoon tea. Then perhaps a bit of shopping. From exclusive boutiques and designer labels through to high street brands, Harrogate is for the serious shopper. Or explore the independents and galleries across the district for something quite unique. After 400 years of practice, this area really knows how to offer relaxation, restoration and a bit of retail therapy.
