Discover Ilfracombe
Coastal Charm Ilfracombe has been a tourist destination since the Victorian age when it expanded from a small fishing port into the seafront and town you see today. Many of the buildings date from this time and some, particularly in the historic harbour and Fore Street areas, are even older. The original settlement dates back to the Iron Age and the name itself is Anglo Saxon literally meaning ‘Valley of the Sons of Alfred’. Ilfracombe comprises of four main distinct areas each offering something different; the Harbour, Fore Street, the Town Centre and the Seafront. The Harbour shelters both pleasure and fishing boats and is the home of attractions such as the Ilfracombe Aquarium, St Nicholas Chapel and right on the Pier, Damien Hirst’s statue ‘Verity’. Here you will also find pubs, cafes and restaurants and a number of quirky and interesting shops. Winding up from the Harbour to the town, Fore Street (literally ‘First Street’) is the oldest street in Ilfracombe and has something of a foodie culture with restaurants, cafes and pubs some of which date back to the 13th century. At the top of Fore Street you will find the Town Centre where you will discover mainly independent shops,

some of which have been in the same family for generations. Along the Promenade from the harbour is the Seafront, with the striking Landmark Theatre, Ilfracombe Museum and the famous Tunnels Beaches with its Victorian bathing pools. To the west of the town the village of Lee has a craggy beach with opportunities for rock pooling whilst to the east Hele Bay offers a more traditional beach and the 16th Century Corn Mill with its waterwheel that still works today. The surfing beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde and the secluded coves and rugged hills of Exmoor are an easy drive making Ilfracombe the ideal base to explore the delights of North Devon.

Verity
There has been a port here since at least the 12th Century and a settlement for much longer. Today the predominant use is for leisure and tourism but this is still a working harbour with fish and seafood landed daily. Enjoy the spectacle of a working boat unloading or watch the gig crews practise their sport. Trips to Lundy Island, coastal cruises, fishing, sea-life safaris and diving are all available along the quay. Try a trip on the Ilfracombe Princess and see seals, porpoises and sea birds nesting on the cliffs. Try your hand at mackerel or deep sea fishing on Blue Fin. Along the Quay and in the surrounding streets there are restaurants, cafes, tea gardens and pubs, many with outside eating and drinking areas giving the feel of a continental pavement culture. Small shops abound selling gifts and other more quirky goods as well as more general stores. Overlooking the harbour is St Nicholas Chapel on the top of Lantern Hill built in 1361 and housing what is said to be the UKs oldest working lighthouse. Ilfracombe Aquarium is a fun, family allweather attraction. The RNLI lifeboat station is also open to the public. Damien Hirst’s ‘Verity’, overlooking the harbour entrance, is Ilfracombe’s newest attraction, a ‘must see’ for visitors and locals alike.

Fore Street and Town Centre
Around The Town Fore Street is the road leading into and out of the original harbour settlement. It winds lazily from the sea to join the Town Centre and town centre. Throughout the middle ages a hotchpotch of cottages, inns and workshops sprang up and many of the buildings still remain. The George and Dragon at the harbour end has operated continuously as a tavern since 1360 while the Prince of Wales is the oldest surviving building. There are other pubs and cafes and a decent range of restaurants serving British and Ethnic cuisine to suit all tastes and pockets. Fore Street and the streets leading from it have become Ilfracombe’s foodie quarter and in the busy summer months diners spill out onto pavement eating areas. Many of the buildings in the town centre date from the 19th century and it remains refreshingly free of the chains that make other towns exactly like everywhere else. Most of the shops are independent retailers and some have been in the same family for generations. You will find food retailers, banks and building societies, chemists, clothes and homeware shops that will cater for your retail needs. It has often been said that you can find anything you need in Ilfracombe, just not all in the same shop! You will also find a warm welcome and an old fashioned charm rarely experienced these days.

Try Walkers Chocolate Emporium, a chocolate lovers’ dream. Whilst you are there, look up! Many of the buildings have stunning Victorian architecture much of it still unspoilt despite a number of buildings going through several incarnations.

The Landmark Theatre is North Devon’s premier entertainment centre holding performances and exhibitions throughout the year including beer and cider festivals! The striking building also houses the Tourist Information Centre. Next door you will find Ilfracombe Museum with its weird & wonderful curiosities. Across the road the Ilfracombe Art and Craft Society Gallery has free exhibitions. The famous Victorian bathing pools at Tunnels Beaches are tucked away at the end of tunnels carved by hand by Welsh miners in the 1820s. Children can play safely in the sea filled pools and enjoy rockpooling. Overlooked by the exotic sub-tropical Southern Slopes, the bandstand in Runnymede Gardens is the venue for free musical performances on summer Sundays. Moving back towards the harbour there is a crazy golf course with brilliant flower displays. The viewpoint from the top of Capstone Hill is well worth the walk to the top. On a sunny day you can see Lundy and the coast of South Wales. Or take a walk around the level promenades on the sea side, a popular route for dog walkers. In the summer you will find bouncy castles and regular events such as car & bike shows and car boot sales.

Entertainment for All Ages
Family Fun There is plenty of entertainment for all the family to suit all ages, taste and pockets. Chambercombe Manor is said to be the most haunted house in the country! Tunnels Beaches offers safe family fun. To the east Combe Martin boasts the longest village high street in the country, and has a pretty beach which is excellent for rock pooling. The Exmoor National Park with its craggy hills and natural wonders provides the opportunity to view wildlife at every turn.

ACCESSIBILITY Ilfracombe is largely built over the rolling and sometimes steep hills of the North Devon Coast. Consequently there are some physical limitations to accessibility. However, the areas around the Landmark Theatre, Capstone Hill and the harbour are generally level. There is also a great programme of events to enjoy throughout the year and many are based in these areas, where you will find parking. Many of the properties offering accommodation date back to the 1880’s and as such access is often via steps and smaller properties cannot accommodate lifts, however doorways and halls tend to be
wide. Ilfracombe accommodation providers offer a personal, caring and welcoming service to their guests and will endeavour to meet any special needs or overcome barriers effectively and respectfully. Physical properties of the area and physical limitations of individual properties within the area mean that not everywhere is suitable for persons of restricted mobility. We advise that if you have any special requirements that you discuss these with the property of your choice prior to booking. Note that ‘wheelchair access’ does not imply that a property has been specifically converted for persons of restricted mobility.
