The Isle of Wight is the perfect holiday destination whether you’re looking for fun attractions or a quiet spot to relax and get away from it all. Whatever you need, this beautiful Island offers so much to see and do, whatever the season.
HISTORY AND HERITAGE The Isle of Wight is unrivalled in the variety of its places of historic interest. The Island’s natural wonders led Queen Victoria, its most famous resident, to build Osborne House between 1845 and 1851, and since then many visitors have been charmed by the Island’s spectacular landscapes and ancient history. The impressive Carisbrooke Castle sits on a hill overlooking Newport, the Island’s county town, and was home to Charles I in the days before his execution. Historic churches and stunning architecture abound in every part of the Island, from Brading’s Medieval Town Hall to the historic ruins of 12th Century Quarr Abbey and the imposing towers of its turn-of-thecentury successor. The Victorian era saw the Island celebrated by the cream of British culture, with Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson and pioneering photographer Julia Margaret Cameron taking up residence in Freshwater, and visits from eminent figures including Karl Marx, Mahatma Gandhi and Charles Dickens.
Brading Roman Villa showcases one of the finest selections of Roman mosaics in Europe in their award-winning visitor centre, and a spectacular coastline bears the marks made by even earlier inhabitants and makes the Island a popular destination for fossil hunters.
The Island has retained its status as centre of the yachting world, with sailing regattas and maritime events held throughout the year. For those more adventurous visitors there are opportunities to indulge in sailing, kitesurfing and windsurfing, whatever your ability or age.
SUN, SEA AND SAND FROM COAST TO COAST
FUN FOR ALL SEASONS
The Isle of Wight has one of the UK’s most spectacular and diverse coastlines, and along its length you’ll find a wealth of fascinating wildlife, natural beauty and places to explore. The West Wight remains rugged and unspoilt and is a favourite with fossil hunters searching for links with the Island’s rich prehistoric past. East Wight is best known for its miles of sandy beaches and seaside attractions, and is perfect for family holidays where sun, sea and sand are the highest priority. Our award-winning beaches offer clean, safe entertainment for all ages, and if you tire of the beach you can still occupy your time with tennis, golf, walking, mountain biking and various water sports around the Island’s coast.
For an island of only 147 square miles, the Isle of Wight packs in so much to see and do at all times of the year. The summer brings internationally recognised music festivals and sporting events to the Island, along with a wide range of more relaxed local festivals, agricultural shows and renowned town carnivals. Bestival and Isle of Wight Festival continue to attract many visitors and top awards, and Cowes Week welcomes the cream of the yachting world for seven days of racing and onshore entertainment. Wildlife parks, historic houses, children’s attractions and areas of stunning natural beauty abound, with the Island’s compact size ensuring that whatever you want to do, something exciting is only a short journey away.

QUALITY RATINGS and AWARDS Accommodation gradings and ratings might seem confusing at first, but we hope the following guide will help you to quickly and easily choose the accommodation that’s right for you.
All the national assessing bodies (VisitEngland*, VisitScotland, Visit Wales and the AA) now assess hotels and guest accommodation (including B&Bs) to the same criteria and award one to five stars. The star ratings reflect the overall quality of the experience. Where indicated the accommodation featured in this guide has been quality-assessed by either VisitEngland* or the AA, or has recently applied for a rating and is awaiting assessment. Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year. If you choose to stay in any of VisitEngland's quality-assessed accommodation, you can be confident that it has been checked out before you check in. For more information on the VisitEngland quality assessment schemes and the star ratings, go to www.visitengland.com
NATIONAL QUALITY ASSESSMENT SCHEME There are two national assessing bodies VisitEngland and the AA. Both work to the same National Quality Assessment standards and use independent assessors.
GUEST ACCOMMODATION GUEST ACCOMMODATION CATEGORIES INCLUDE: Guest Accommodation is the category which encompasses anything from one-room Bed and Breakfasts to the larger places found in our coastal resorts, which may offer dinner and may be licensed. Guest Accommodation tends to be personally run by the owners. Bed and Breakfasts generally accommodate no more than six people. It's like staying as a special guest in someone's home. Farmhouses offer bed and breakfast and sometimes dinner, always on a farm. Guest Houses tend to have more than three rooms and may offer dinner to their guests. Some may be licensed. Inns are pubs with rooms which serve food in the evenings, as well as breakfast. Sometimes access to guest accommodation may be restricted during the day, but you will be advised on booking. GUEST ACCOMMODATION OWNERS HAVE TO PROVIDE CERTAIN ADDITIONAL FACILITIES AND SERVICES AT THE HIGHER STAR LEVELS. THESE INCLUDE: ★★★
Bathroom/shower rooms cannot be shared with the owners. If bedroom not en suite, then wash basin in bedroom.
★★★★
At least 50% of bedrooms en suite or private bathroom.
★★★★★
All bedrooms en suite or private bathroom.
Please refer to the descriptions in the guide to help you make your choice as properties may offer many of the facilities of the higher star levels but don’t meet all of the criteria to achieve the higher grading.
SELF CATERING ACCOMMODATION Assessments are carried out on the general layout and design of the accommodation taking into account the comfort of both bedrooms and bathrooms. Quality and range of kitchen equipment is assessed and, most important of all, cleanliness. SELF CATERING CATEGORIES INCLUDE:
HOTEL Hotels are required to be licensed, offer dinner on at least five nights per week (unless a Metro Hotel) with all rooms having en suites or private bathrooms. HOTEL CATEGORIES INCLUDE: Hotels have a minimum of five bedrooms, but more likely to have 20+ rooms. Small Hotels have a maximum of 20 bedrooms and likely to be more personally run. Country House Hotels have ample grounds or gardens, in a rural or semi-rural location, with emphasis on peace and quiet. HOTELS HAVE TO PROVIDE CERTAIN ADDITIONAL FACILITIES AND SERVICES AT THE HIGHER STAR LEVELS. THESE INCLUDE: ★★
Dinner available five nights a week (unless Metro Hotel).
★★★
All bedrooms en suite (i.e. no private bathrooms). Room service during core hours. Permanently staffed reception. Telephones in all rooms.
★★★★
Enhanced guest services e.g. 24 hour room service, porterage, afternoon tea etc. Superior bedrooms and bathrooms.
★★★★★
Some permanent luxury suites. Enhanced services such as concierge, valet parking etc.
Of course, many lower star-rated hotels may offer some of the above, but just do not meet all of the expectations for the higher star ratings.
Self Catering Accommodation Includes the categories Self Catering, Serviced Apartments, Approved Caravan Holiday Home. Individual caravan holiday homes are assessed to ensure they provide clean and comfortable accommodation, gaining Approved Caravan Holiday Home status (no star rating). ★
A microwave is provided.
★★
All beds full size.
★★★
Bed linen available.
★★★★
All advertised sleeping space will be in bedrooms and beds will be made up on arrival.
★★★★★
The highest standards of quality and attention to detail.
Hostels Includes the categories Hostel, Group Hostel, Activity Accommodation, Bunkhouse (no star rating), Camping Barn (no star rating). Camping Barns and Bunkhouses are assessed to ensure they provide clean and comfortable accommodation. Hostels provide safe, budget-priced, short-term accommodation for individuals and groups.

visitisleofwight.com
Holiday, Touring & Camping Parks and Holiday Villages Includes the categories Holiday Park, Touring Park, Camping Park and Holiday Villages. Parks are assessed on the standard they provide to visitors in all aspects: facilities, cleanliness, service, pitches, groundsmanship, play areas and leisure facilities where provided. ★
Park must be clean with good standards of maintenance and customer care.
★★
As above plus improved level of landscaping, lighting, maintenance and refuse disposal. May be less expensive than more highly rated parks.
★★★
This represents the industry standard as most parks fall within this category. The range of facilities may vary from park to park, but they will be of good standard and will be well maintained.
★★★★
These parks rank among the industry’s best and provide careful attention to detail in the provision of all services and facilities.
★★★★★
The highest level of customer care provided. All facilities will be maintained in pristine condition in attractive surroundings.
“GRADING APPLIED FOR” ”Grading Applied For” indicates that the establishment has applied for a grading but the award was not available at the time of this guide going to press. To confirm a VisitEngland rating visit www.visitengland.com, telephone 0207 578 1454 or email feedback@visitengland.org To confirm AA ratings visit www.theAA.com, telephone 01256 844455 or email customer.services@theAA.com *VisitEngland is the official tourism body for England. Its role is to work in partnership with government and industry creating a national tourism strategy, optimising marketing investment, and developing the visitor experience across England. VisitEngland assesses more than 23,000 accommodation businesses across nine different VisitEngland schemes. These assessments are provided by Quality in Tourism on VisitEngland's behalf.
ACCESSIBLE ACCOMMODATION If you have particular mobility needs, look out for VisitEngland’s National Accessible Scheme logos in this guide. Accommodation establishments that display one or more of the logos shown on this page are committed to accessibility and you can be sure that these establishments have been assessed against demanding criteria. For tips and advice on holiday travel in England, go to www.visitengland.com/access LOGOS AND DEFINITIONS - MOBILITY IMPAIRMENT Older and less mobile guests For older or less mobile guests who can climb a flight of stairs, but for whom banisters or grip handles would make this easier. Part-time wheelchair users For those who have problems walking or can walk a maximum of 3 steps, or need to use a wheelchair some of the time.

ADDITIONAL AWARDS AND ACCOLADES GOLD AND SILVER AWARDS These accolades are awarded to Hotels and Guest Houses/B&Bs and recognise exceptional quality in all areas, particularly in service and hospitality.
AA RED STARS Red stars are awarded to select Hotels in each star grading. These are awarded ‘Inspectors’ Choice’ status.
AA YELLOW STARS Yellow stars recognise the very best accumulation within the three to five star rating. The “Highly Commended” status is given to Guest Accommodation in the top % of its star rating. Please note that due to space constraints on some accommodation entries, these awards are sometimes indicated by text only, e.g. GOLD or HIGHLY COMMENDED
GOLD AWARD FOR SELF CATERING This accolade is awarded to Self Catering and Serviced Apartments and recognises exceptional quality in all areas, particularly in service and hospitality.
DAVID BELLAMY AWARDS David Bellamy Conservation Awards are made each year to parks which can demonstrate policies showing active concern for the environment. Three levels of excellence can be achieved: Gold, Silver and Bronze.
THE GREEN TOURISM BUSINESS SCHEME (GTBS) A marketing and advisory tool for tourism businesses supporting the local area and environment. It is Europe's largest and most successful 'green' accreditation scheme for the tourism sector.
BRITISH HOLIDAY AND HOME PARKS ASSOCIATION MEMBER (BH&HPA) Established exclusively to serve and represent the interests of the British parks industry.
BREAKFAST AWARD FOR SERVICED ACCOMMODATION VisitEngland's and AA’s Breakfast award given to Hotels and B&Bs with high scores for breakfast.
AA MERIT % SCORE In addition to the star rating, The AA awards an AA Merit Score as a percentage. This indicates the level of quality achieved within each star rating, which helps you to compare accommodation with the same number of stars.
Independent wheelchair users For wheelchair users who travel independently. Assisted wheelchair users For wheelchair users who travel with a friend or family member to help with everyday tasks. Access Exceptional Awarded to establishments that meet the requirements of independent wheelchair users or assisted wheelchair users and also fulfill more demanding requirements with reference to the British Standard BS 8300:2001.
PENNANT RATINGS FOR CAMPSITES AND CARAVAN PARKS Campsites and Caravan Parks are rated by AA inspectors on a fivepoint scale. The Pennant ratings increase with the quality and variety of facilities a park offers. The AA Pennant rating is only based on the touring pitches and the facilities at Campsites and Caravan Parks.
ROSETTE AWARDS FOR RESTAURANTS AA inspectors annually award Rosettes to restaurants for the quality of their food.

RYDE
Sun, Sea and Sandown!
Sandown is the sister resort to Shanklin. It sits in the centre of Sandown Bay with Shanklin to the south and Yaverland and Culver Cliff to the north. Its gently sloping sandy beaches are ideal for safe bathing, with the Island’s only remaining entertainment pier providing fun for all the family.
Sandown is best-known as a friendly-family resort, and the town is well served by its safe, sandy beaches, a pier and a wide variety of shops, hotels, restaurants and cafes. The pier is the only traditional entertainment pier remaining on the Isle of Wight, and has all the amusements, fairground rides, cafes and bars you’d expect, with fishing allowed from the end of the pier for keen anglers. Families can stay entertained for hours, and the views along Sandown Bay, to Culver Cliff in the north and St. Boniface Downs in the south, are stunning. Sandown Carnival, the first in the Island’s busy season, takes place at the end of July and is a feast for the senses. The kids will also be entertained at Browns Pitch and Putt on the seafront, whilst more serious golfers can visit
the local 18-hole golf course. Close by, the Isle of Wight Zoo is a world-renowned tiger and big cat sanctuary, as well as featuring many other rare and rescued exotic species. Dinosaur Isle charts the Island’s rich prehistoric heritage, with dinosaur and fossil samples gathered from around the Island’s eroding cliff faces. A walk south along the base of the cliffs towards Shanklin is a must, and you will be able to stop and take in the views at one of the many beachfront cafes, whether it be a cream tea or light lunch. A walk back along the cliff tops offers even more stunning panoramas. The walk north to Culver Cliffs is also very rewarding, with views across half of the Island, the Solent towards Portsmouth, Southsea and the South Downs. Nearby Whitecliff Bay has a wide expanse of family-

friendly sandy beach, rockpools and two beach cafes. For the more energetic, The Heights is one of the Island’s largest multi-purpose leisure centres, with activities ranging from swimming and squash to fitness training and pampering in a well-equipped health suite. Historic Brading, just a few miles inland from Sandown, used to be a busy port, and a walk along Quay Lane past the Norman Church will take you down to the former harbour wall and along to Brading Marshes, the Island’s first RSPB Reserve.
Whitecliff Bay has a wide expanse of family-friendly sandy beach, rockpools and two beach cafes
The town also features the award-winning Roman Villa Visitor Centre which features many rare and interesting artefacts found at the site and some of the most beautifully preserved mosaics in Europe. The site, one of the UK’s finest, offers a unique insight into Roman Britain. Just west of Sandown, Amazon World Zoo Park is an educational and conservation centre housing over 200 animal species and rain forest plants, with regular falconry displays and Meet The Animals talks throughout the day.

All about Brading Just a short distance from Sandown is historic Brading. Established as an important port from ancient times, reminders of the town’s earliest settlers can be spectacularly seen at the Brading Roman Villa Visitors Centre. Since those ancient times, Brading’s history has been rich and varied. A royal charter was granted to the town by Edward VI in 1548, and Brading continued to be a bustling port until the 16th Century. The town has many sites of historical significance to the Island, and The Brading Heritage Trail covers most of the sites of historic and natural interest, including the ancient Town Hall, Tudor Garden and the 12th Century St. Mary's Church. Nature lovers will enjoy Brading Marshes, the RSPB's first reserve on the Isle of Wight. From the reserve gateway at Brading station, you can pick up trail guides and information and then explore the extensive series of footpaths that cross this fascinating site.

The coastal resort of Shanklin is located at the south east corner of the Island at the southernmost tip of Sandown Bay. Shanklin combines the old world charm of its thatched cottages and tea rooms with the sandy beaches and seaside attractions of a traditional holiday resort. Shanklin has long been a favourite location for family holidays, with its safe sandy beach and clear waters. The Esplanade provides everything you’ll need for a great beach holiday, including crazy golf, children’s amusements and ample car parking. A lift provides easy access to the cliff tops, where the views are spectacular, and is a perfect way to enjoy the stunning views for the elderly or disabled. The long seafront is a real attraction for visitors to the town, with a wealth of cafes, restaurants, hotels and pubs to enjoy, regularly served by a small road train

which operates during the summer months between the town centre and Old Village. Shanklin Bay is sheltered from the prevailing winds by Dunnose Point, which provides a stunning backdrop to the golden beaches. Looking out to the English Channel across the bay, views extend around to the white cliffs of Culver and Bembridge Downs. Shanklin’s two safe, sandy beaches are bordered by many traditional seaside attractions including amusement arcades, crazy golf and play areas. Shanklin is probably most well-known for its pretty Old Village, which is located on the south side of the town. The village is extremely picturesque and oozes old world charm, and most visitors head for the thatched cottages and quaint shops, with tea

Just past the entrance to The Crab Inn is Shanklin Chine, a deep gorge carved out by a stream over many years, which makes a restful and picturesque place to spend a morning or afternoon. In the evening the waterfalls and woodland are illuminated, giving the gardens a magical atmosphere. There are good shopping opportunities to be had in Shanklin on the High Street and Regent Street. Here you will find gifts for the all family, and perhaps even a prized reminder of your time on the Island. Entertainment is provided by Shanklin Theatre which plays host to a variety of music, theatre, comedy and dance performances throughout the year. The town is well served by rail, which connects to the high speed ferry terminal in Ryde, and there are also regular services to the Island’s principal towns via the bus system, the depot for which is easily found by Co-op supermarket in Landguard Road.

Shanklin factfile... In July and August 1819 the poet John Keats lodged at Eglantine Cottage in the High Street, where he completed the first book of Lamia and began a drama, Otho the Great. Shanklin used to have a pier, but this was destroyed in the Great Storm of 1987. The pier formerly had a theatre at which many famous performers appeared, including Paul Robeson, Richard Tauber and Arthur Askey. St.Paul’s Church in Regent Street has the bell from HMS Eurydice, which sank in 1878 off Dunnose Point, and is the subject of a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins. Shanklin is the location where Charles Darwin wrote his Origin of Species during an 18 month-long visit.

A taste of the Island’s Victorian past
Ventnor is the southernmost resort on the Island. The town gained popularity in the Victorian era and sits on the side of St. Boniface Down which offers picturesque views and shelter to the town. Ventnor's unique position makes it fertile ground for tropical vegetation which takes full advantage of the mild climate.

BRADING SANDOWN LAKE SHANKLIN BONCHURCH VENTNOR
BONCHURCH A short walk north along the coast will bring you to Bonchurch, worth a visit to appreciate the quaint cottages, large imposing Victorian mansions and pretty village pond. The seafront has a safe shingle and sand beach, surrounded by rocks which are popular with keen rockpoolers of all ages.
GODSHILL VENTNOR The town of Ventnor tumbles down seawards from the side of the Downs, so there is always a sea view to be had, and its well-preserved 19th Century architecture offers you an insight into what the town was like in its Victorian heyday. The clear waters of the bay are accessed from a richly-coloured gently sloping sand and shingle beach. There are many pubs and restaurants overlooking the beach, some of which offer fresh locally caught seafood, including the famous Ventnor Bay crab. From the esplanade you can walk uphill to the shops, past the picturesque cascade and Art Deco Winter Gardens. The town centre offers a wide range of ‘knick-knack’ and speciality shops, selling books, antiques, jewellery and many other handmade crafts.
A gentle walk south will bring you to Steephill Cove, a beautiful sheltered bay, which is only accessible on foot and a great place for children to play and enjoy the safe bathing. From here you can climb the steep stairs to the Botanic Gardens, which is a must for naturelovers, featuring many varieties of tropical vegetation which thrive in Ventnor’s sheltered climate. You may even spot one of the garden’s most famous residents, the wall lizard. A little further south is St. Lawrence, home to Isle of Wight Studio Glass, known internationally for their highly imaginative and creative approaches to handmade glassmaking. St. Catherine’s Lighthouse occupies the most southerly point of the Isle of Wight, and tours around the historic building provide a fascinating insight into the Island’s seafaring past and a perfect location to view the Island’s rugged coastline.
Ventnor Views Far Left: The unique micro-climate of Ventnor supports many rare and exotic plant species. Left: One of many friendly faces to be seen at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary. Right: Godshill Model Village has been a popular tourist attraction for over 60 years.
Godshill may be best described as the quintessential English Village, with its traditional thatched cottages, medieval church and a bustling main street lined with tea rooms, pubs and craft shops. The village has many attractions including a Model Village, which depicts the area in 1:10 scale, and a small but fascinating Toy Museum. There are a host of speciality shops offering local crafts and produce, including The Cider Barn which stocks traditional ciders and wines as well as relishes, preserves and biscuits, and Chocolate Island, a must for every chocoholic with its wide range of handmade speciality chocolates and gifts. The Old Smithy, once a blacksmiths forge, is now a tea room, gift shop and fashion boutique. All Saints’ Church was built in the 15th Century and is among the top 10 most visited churches in the UK.

All about Ventnor Ventnor was a small fishing hamlet during the 19th century, but with the coming of the Isle of Wight Railway in 1866 the town became both a tourist and a health resort, even Charles Dickens lived nearby for some time. The fresh Channel air and warm climate were considered to be very beneficial to those suffering from disease. The sandy beach was ideal for bathing, and is still popular today, but more for relaxation than recuperation!

Cowes is not only the yachting centre of the Isle of Wight, but arguably the world. It is most famous for Cowes Week, which takes place in early August and sees the town transformed into an international venue for competition on sea, and entertainment on land. COWES A visit to Cowes Week is a must for any visitor to the Island, not only to appreciate the riot of excitement and colour out at sea, but also to enjoy the electric atmosphere ashore. During the week Cowes Yacht Haven buzzes with live entertainment and events, and in the evenings crew members relax and discuss the day’s results in one of Cowes’ many restaurants and pubs (reputedly having more per square mile than any other town in the UK). Cowes has a pedestrianised High Street down which you will find a wealth of chandleries, art galleries and boutiques. The seafront is never more than a moment away, and a
short walk will take you to the esplanade and along to the famous Cowes Yacht Squadron, where you can look out to sea and appreciate what makes the town such a popular sailing destination for sailors and enthusiasts from around the world.
which is a must for any visitor to the Island. Built as a family holiday home, its spectacular house and grounds offer a fascinating glimpse into the private lives of the Royal Family, including original furnishings and priceless artworks. The grounds of Osborne House are also the venue for concerts throughout the summer months by international artists.
During Cowes Week the town buzzes with live entertainment and sailing events
EAST COWES East Cowes is probably bestknown as once being the residence of Queen Victoria. Nearby Norris Castle was visited by Princess Victoria in her youth and it was this visit that began her lifelong love of the Island. When she was unable to buy the property she began to make plans to build Osborne House nearby,
Cowes Views Far left: One of the many places to rest and relax on the bustling High Street in Cowes. Left: The village of Gurnard offers spectacular views across the Solent. Right: Osborne House is a stunning backdrop to a day on the water.
Next to the main house is Barton Manor, a medieval Manor used by Prince Albert as an experimental farm. Though not open to the public, the gardens are open at various times throughout the summer. St. Mildred’s Church at Whippingham was the church favoured by the Royals when they stayed at Osborne, and this superbly ornate structure is a must for history lovers. East Cowes was a major industrial centre, but today much of the town formerly used for industry is being re-developed for marina facilities and luxury properties.

Cowes
Factfile
Cowes Week, which is held annually in August, is the world's oldest regular sailing regatta. Cowes’ name is thought to be derived from Westcowe, one of the two sandbanks either side of the River Medina estuary, which were named after a supposed likeness to cows.

All about Cowes It is thought that the construction of the vessel ‘Rat O'Wight’, built by Queen Elizabeth I in 1589, was the beginning of Cowes’ rise as a centre of boatbuilding. Recreational seafaring did not become popular until much later, when keen sailor King George IV popularised it. During his reign the Royal Yacht Squadron organised a three-day regatta and sowed the seed for the spectacular celebration of all things maritime that Cowes Week is today.

Newport lies at the heart of the Island and was once a thriving port. Today it’s still a centre of commerce, with its variety of shops and bustling farmers market.
Newport, as you would expect from a county town, has a wide variety of shops, from large superstores to speciality shops and a regular farmer’s market. In recent years the town has been developed to accommodate larger chains such as Morrisons, Sainsburys, M&S and also a Cineworld Complex, but Newport still retains its small town charm, with quayside bars and Quay Arts Centre, and beautiful walks along the banks of the River Medina towards Cowes. To the southwest of Newport is Carisbrooke, a pretty village with several good pubs and its most famous landmark, Carisbrooke Castle. Charles I was held prisoner here before being taken to London for his execution, and for those interested in history a visit here is a must. At the heart of the town is Newport Minster. This imposing church was built in 1854 but there has been a place of worship on this site for over 800 years. The building dominates pretty St. Thomas’ Square where you can enjoy the view from several alfresco restaurants and pubs. On the outskirts of Newport is Robin Hill Country Park, the Island’s award-winning countryside attraction, which offers country walks, thrilling rides, adventure play, falconry displays and events throughout the season. The park also hosts Bestival, one of the best loved music events in the UK. Just outside Newport is one of the Island’s newest attractions, the Owl and Monkey Haven, which provides a safe, happy environment for primates and birds of prey who find Above: One of the many themselves without a home.

East Wight can truly be seen as the perfect mix of what makes the Isle of Wight so appealing. From the 6 miles of sandy beaches and bustling streets of Ryde to the relaxed charm of Bembridge and Seaview, the East Wight is an area of contrasts, treats and surprises.
RYDE Located on the north east coast of the Island, and enjoying views across the Solent towards Portsmouth, Ryde is best-known for its Victorian holiday atmosphere and its miles of golden sands. A stroll along the Esplanade will take you past the ice rink, ten-pin bowling, bowling green and children’s fairground. Keep walking and you will pass the imposing Victorian folly of Appley Tower, with nearby Puckpool Park providing a great place for the children to play and the adults to relax. Beachside cafes serve much-needed refreshment, and you can always take the road train back to town. Ryde Pier, built at the height of the Victorian era, still welcomes visitors from across the Solent, and from its farthest point there is a fine view of the Victorian properties that line the Esplanade. The town is known as the gateway to the Eastern Isle, with its fast
ferry and Hovercraft links, and car ferry which comes into nearby Fishbourne. From Ryde you can catch a bus to all of the Island’s principal towns or take the train through to Brading, Lake, Sandown and Shanklin. Ryde is the largest town on the Isle of Wight and its shops are some of the best and most varied on the Island, with plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants to choose from when you finish your long day’s shopping. If you prefer a more active holiday, Ryde has its own successful ice hockey and speedway teams to cheer on, and there are tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool and squash centre if you have any energy left! If you want to stay a spectator, once a year Ryde is host to the world’s largest scooter rally, with events and live music throughout the weekend. Situated on the outskirts of Ryde, Quarr Abbey is a Benedictine monastery established in the 12th Century, and has a tea shop and bookshop in its attractive grounds.
East Wight Views Far left: Wallabies are just one of the many exotic species at the Seaview Wildlife Encounter. Right: The annual scooter rally attracts thousands of enthusiasts and amazing machines from around the world. Left: Appley, with its imposing tower and sandy beach, is perfect for a family holiday.
SEAVIEW Located on the coast between Ryde and Bembridge is the lovely village of Seaview. Seaview, as its name suggests, has a strong maritime culture, and the village holds a popular annual regatta in the summer. Just outside the village is the Seaview Wildlife Encounter, where visitors of all ages can enjoy a hands-on wildlife experience, strolling amongst rare animals and birds, and feeding and getting to know many different exotic species.
BEMBRIDGE Bembridge is one of the most easterly towns on the Island, and offers wide shallow beaches, perfect for safe bathing and beachcombing. Bembridge has a surprisingly busy small harbour, which is always well stocked with pleasure craft and fishing boats. The harbour’s characterful houseboats are definitely worth a look and some of them offer afternoon tea and B&B. Bembridge Windmill is an iconic landmark, and the only surviving windmill on the Island. It was built c.1700 and still has its original machinery intact. From here there are glorious panoramas across the Island, views that provided inspiration for many artists including J.M.W. Turner.

The church of St. Mary’s was built in 1846 and was designed by Joseph Hansom, inventor of the hansom cab. Ryde is noted for its carnivals, and its main procession is the oldest in England. There are five throughout the year - an Arts Parade in June; Children’s, Main and Illuminated processions at the end of August and a Lantern Parade in December. Ryde Carnival remains the island's largest, with local crowds and mainland visitors totalling in excess of 50,000 spectators. The movie director Anthony Minghella was born in Ryde in 1954. The Island’s Minghella Film Festival is named in his honour.

WEST WIGHT
Unspoilt beauty steeped in history
West Wight makes up approximately one third of the Isle of Wight, and contains some of its most awe-inspiring scenery. From the iconic landmark of The Needles to the rugged beauty of its chines and bays, the West Wight is a must for lovers of the great outdoors. FRESHWATER Freshwater is the main town for residents of the West Wight and offers a wide range of shops in its busy town centre. Nearby Freshwater Bay is a must-see for holidaymakers with its rolling waves coming in from the English Channel and crashing against the cliffs in the winter months, and calm, still waters and peaceful shingle beach during the summer. Freshwater Bay Golf Club perches high above its famous white cliffs, and is one of the most spectacular courses in the UK.
A pleasant walk north of Freshwater is to Alum Bay with its famous coloured sands.
Freshwater’s impressive landscape has attracted artists for many years, and the Bay was home to Alfred Lord Tennyson, who wrote much of his work here. The pioneering photographer Julia Margaret Cameron attracted many members of Victorian Society to the Island. Her home, Dimbola Lodge, now preserves and exhibits much of her work. Occupying the most westerly point is the Isle of Wight’s most recognised landmark, The Needles, with its dramatic white spires of chalk rising up from the sea towards its famous lighthouse. The Needles Old Battery is a Victorian coastal defence and perches high above The Needles, with a tunnel through the cliffs leading to a spectacular panorama. A pleasant walk north of
WestWight Views Far Left: The Longstone at Mottistone is the only Megalithic monument on the Island. Left: The Walk the Wight event attracts over 12,000 people each year and takes in some of the finest sites of the West Wight. Right: Yarmouth comes alive for the annual Old Gaffers Festival.

YARMOUTH Yarmouth’s harbour is a precious natural feature which was guarded by Yarmouth Castle, the fortification built by Henry VIII in 1547 to protect the Solent from invading forces. The Yarmouth Old Gaffers Festival is the highlight of the town’s calendar, and is a colourful and vibrant celebration of the sea featuring street entertainment, live music, craft marquees and food stalls. Yarmouth Pier, the longest timber pier in England, is a great place to go fishing or just enjoy the views across the Solent. The small, charming town has several good pubs, restaurants and tea rooms in which to while away the time and a path along the picturesque banks of The Yar to Freshwater. Nearby Fort Victoria Country Park has a Marine Aquarium, Underwater Archaeology Centre, Planetarium and Model Railway, as well as nature trails.

Further Afield For lovers of the great outdoors, Tennyson Down rises up from Freshwater Bay to provide breathtaking views across the Island and the Solent and the rugged coastline has natural features such as Compton Bay (below), a popular spot for surfers, swimmers and fossil hunters alike. The tiny hamlet of Newtown has a historic 17th Century Old Town Hall, and is a National Nature Reserve, popular with birdwatchers all year round. Inland, magical Mottistone Manor Garden surrounds an Elizabethan manor house, and from here it’s only a short walk to The Longstone, the Island’s only megalithic monument. Nearby Totland Bay and Colwell Bay are popular beaches with golden sand, beach huts and watersports.

Newtown factfile... Newtown has had a stormy history. It is said to have been sacked by the Danes in 1001, and suffered a number of attacks by the French at later dates, the most disastrous being in 1377 when much of the then thriving town was destroyed. The 17th-century Old Town Hall (pictured) is the only remaining evidence of Newtown’s former importance as an important commercial centre. The historic building was restored in 1813, and again in the 1930s, and is now open to the public. Newtown is the only National Nature Reserve on the Isle of Wight, and is currently owned and managed by the National Trust. It’s extensive unspoilt wetlands are popular with birdwatchers, walkers, wildlife enthusiasts and historians throughout the year.
