9 The Isle of Wight is easy to get to, and once you are here you won’t want to leave! Just 13 miles from north to south and 27 miles from east to west, the Island offers an incredible range of things to see and do. Add to this a warmer than average climate and it’s not surprising that it continues to be the perfect holiday destination for adventure seekers. A place of infinite possibilities, the beautiful Isle of Wight is fantastic fun for families with new and exciting discoveries around every corner.

If so, take a look at the thriving towns of Newport and Cowes, which are well connected and only a short drive to many of the Island’s best beaches and historic sites – including castles, stately homes and roman villas. In the evening, you can choose from a range of bars, restaurants and entertainment.

If you are looking for a traditional seaside family break with clean, award-winning sandy beaches and entertainment for younger visitors then start your search around Sandown, Shanklin, Ryde or Ventnor.

Perhaps though you’re craving something a little quieter, away from the piers and pedalos. You might consider staying in the West Wight countryside around Brighstone, Yarmouth or Freshwater where you’ll find miles of unspoilt beaches and clifftop paths with vistas of the world famous Needles Lighthouse and Alum Bay’s multicoloured sands.

As well as being amongst the UK’s sunniest spots, these resorts have our biggest range of hotels and B&Bs alongside high quality campsites and caravan parks. Take your pick from family-friendly attractions including adventure and wildlife parks, interactive museums and seaside amusements. Or maybe you are tying in a visit around one of our world-class events, which now include Cowes Week, Isle of Wight Festival, Bestival and our walking and cycling festivals.

By day, try watersports and fossil hunting along the Island’s south west coast or search for red squirrels in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. At night, try a cosy village pub serving local produce and admire a starry sky without light pollution. Wherever you choose to stay on the Isle of Wight, we’re confident you’ll be back next year.

UNIQUELY W I G H T EX P ER IEN C ES Award-winning beaches Whether you are looking to top up your tan, take a late evening stroll as the sun sets, or simply see how far you can skim a stone, the Island has miles of award-winning sandy beaches (currently more than anywhere else in England) and rugged coastline for you to explore.

Outdoor adventures With its contrasting landscapes and surrounding seas the Isle of Wight makes the perfect “playground” for watersports and adventure activities. Try your hand at everything from Archery to Zorbing, with courses and sessions available for virtually all ages and abilities. We are also regarded as one of the best places for Cycling in the world!

Festival Island Two of the UK’s biggest music festivals, Bestival and The Isle of Wight Festival, are part of a big festival family on the Isle of Wight, with events of all shapes and sizes across the year. Others include the world’s largest sailing regatta at Cowes Week, The Garlic Festival, V-Dub Island, Isle of Wight Walking Festival and the International Classic Car Show.

Eat local One thing our warmer climate allows us to do is grow some of the best produce you will find anywhere. Isle of Wight grown Garlic, Cheese, Tomatoes, Oils and Chilli are all regular exports as well as being available to sample locally - we also have some of the best known Ice Cream in the world produced here (sadly it doesn’t grow on trees!)

Carnival capital As well as holding two of the longest running parades in England the Isle of Wight also boasts more carnivals per head of population than the rest of the UK! Catch the colourful parades throughout the summer and winter, and keep an eye out for the spectacular illuminated carnivals which light up the streets in many of our towns.

The sunshine capital of the UK…? It has been a “hotly” debated topic for many years, and the Isle of Wight is often attributed as one of the places that gets the most sunshine hours. One thing we know for sure is the Island has its very own microclimate at The Undercliff in Ventnor, where we hold the English record for the warmest nights in May, June and July.

The Garden Isle With around half the Island designated as Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty you’re never far from unspoilt landscapes. Look out for unexpected gardens too, including bonsai at Godshill Model Village and the market garden at Osborne’s Swiss Cottage, originally tended by the Royal children. Our annual Wight In Bloom competition inspires green-fingered Islanders!

Dinosaur Island The Isle of Wight is the richest place in the UK for fossil discoveries, with over 25 different species recognised to have lived on the Island when it was still connected to mainland Europe! As well as hunting for fossils on our beaches you can also try out the “Dinosaur Island” app, which lets you walk alongside dinosaurs with your smartphone or tablet.

Hover across the Solent The very first hovercraft was produced on the Isle of Wight back in 1956, and you can now take a trip from Ryde to Southsea and experience the last remaining commercial Hovercraft service in the world. It’s also the quickest way to cross the Solent at just 10 minutes journey time!

The Needles Rocks The “Needles you can’t thread” are regarded as one of the Island’s “Eight Wonders”, and the incredible chalk rocks and lighthouse they describe form our most iconic landmark. The nearby chairlift down to the colourful sands of Alum Bay beach is one of the most spectacular rides on the Island!

EXPLORE THE ISLAND

EXPLORE THE ISLAND If you’re looking to get out for some fun in the great outdoors, the Island is the perfect place to do so. Over half of ‘The Garden Isle’ is a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, and looking around, it’s not hard to see why. From stunning beaches, and clear starry skies to chalk cliffs and rolling hills, the Island showcases the best bits of nature. Why not hire a bike and follow some of the cycle routes? Lonely Planet named us as one of the world’s top ten cycling destinations, with a suite of over 150 miles of way-marked bike routes through our “cyclist’s paradise”. The Island also offers some stunning coastal footpaths, including the Tennyson Trail
in Freshwater where you can walk in the footsteps of the famous poet laureate up and over the headland to the iconic Needles. Attractions offer interactive history, family fun, outdoor activities, music festivals and more so you’ll never be stuck for interesting things to see and do. Many of our popular attractions have holiday events throughout the year with firework displays, woodland illuminations, theatre workshops and art & craft workshops. Themed birthday parties and special junior experiences such as “Zookeeper for a day” also provide an unforgettable day out for children. As the UK’s dinosaur capital, it’s not surprising that there are also a fantastic range of fun and educational attractions at Island theme parks and museums that bring dinosaurs to life. Embark on your pre-historic journey by downloading the incredible ‘Dinosaur Island’ app and take pictures of family and friends walking alongside these mighty giants in the very place they were discovered!

Get close to nature on a Wildlife Weekend and discover ancient woodlands, wondrous wetlands and the Island’s top rock pooling sites. Or visit during the annual walking festival in May and take part in a range of Family Discovery Walks, from story walks where children can walk along the shore at low tide searching for sea glass, driftwood and limpet shells to evening Ghost Walks – keep close behind our guides as they regale you with tales of mystery and suspense. For more fun-filled activities and adventure, our award-winning beaches offer safe, clean entertainment for all ages. The Isle of Wight has its very own microclimate too, making it one of the sunniest places in the UK. Ventnor, at the southernmost tip of the Island, is home to Ventnor Botanic Gardens where exotic plants (even palm trees!) grow. The Island’s resort towns have long sandy beaches with traditional activities and amenities from Crazy Golf and mini fairgrounds to beachfront cafes and quaint pubs serving freshly caught seafood often landed on the beach right next to you!

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES TO

Cycle the Red Squirrel Trail Hire some bikes and ride along the former railway track, taking you through woodland where you might see a dash of red jumping between the treetops.

Fossil Hunting at Brook Chine The Daily Telegraph named the Island as one of the five “best places in Britain for young fans to come nose-to-nose with dinosaurs – or hunt for fossils.” Explore the coastline and beach at Brook to discover dinosaur footprints and a fossilised forest, along with all sorts of other interesting remains hidden amongst the sand and stones.

Make tracks along the coastal path Take the time to tackle the Isle of Wight coastal path on foot and you’ll be rewarded with scenery and sea air that will leave you feeling rejuvenated. The route offers ramblers a 67 mile circular tour of some of the most dramatic views in England, taking in lighthouses, piers and even a seaside castle.

Follow the real-life “War Horse” Track the new Warrior Trail on foot, by bike, and even on horseback, celebrating a courageous thoroughbred called “Warrior” - raised on the Isle of Wight by Winston Churchill’s great friend Jack Seely

AUTHENTIC ISLAND FLAVOURS Garlic The Isle of Wight has a growing reputation for its produce and it’s no wonder we’re being described as the foodie capital of the south coast! The Island really is one of the best places in Britain to eat out, and whatever your taste you’ll be spoilt for choice here, with menus featuring the finest locally sourced ingredients. With more than 60 miles of coastline it’s no surprise that seafood is a popular choice with many pubs, restaurants and cafes serving the day’s catch of crab, lobster and fish. The Isle of Wight’s unique mix of climate and geography means you’ll find locally grown produce on offer throughout the year. The choice extends to drinks too, with beer, wine or cider, all locally brewed and served with pride. Where you eat is up to you and we guarantee there’s plenty to suit your taste and appetite! Whether it’s an award-winning restaurant, a classic country pub, a vintage tearoom or seafront café there’s plenty of choice for all of the family. There are ‘olde worlde’ pubs with beams and roaring log fires, inns in superb coastal locations providing a breath of sea air, and pubs with outdoor play areas and gardens. There are also plenty of stylish and contemporary bars on the Island providing a relaxed atmosphere for that pre-theatre cocktail or speciality after dinner coffee. Isle of Wight restaurants offer a wide variety of options; from a leisurely lunch with friends and family at a beachfront location, to a celebratory dinner for two at a top-notch hotel. The Isle of Wight has a superb choice of restaurants for all tastes and budgets, many of which have earned prestigious awards for their cuisines. Every town and village has places to tempt you, so indulge yourself and enjoy great food, drink and friendly service.

A pungent delight that has helped put the Isle of Wight on the culinary map. The Garlic Farm in Newchurch supplies retailers and delicatessens across the UK, producing 150 tons each year. Go for a stroll away from the main roads and you’ll come across the smell of wild garlic too.

Ice cream It’s a seaside tradition that, on the Island, has a local and international flavour. Ice cream makers use milk from our dairy herds to produce award-winning treats. The Minghella family’s famous Italian-style ice cream, which is produced in Wootton and received worldwide attention when the late film director Anthony Minghella enjoyed Oscar wins for The English Patient and Cold Mountain.

Crab on chips Don’t miss out on what is fast becoming the Island’s signature dish! Isle of Wight crabmeat is the best in Britain and it’s even better when served with a breath of fresh sea air and as a local twist on the classic fish and chips. Which also tastes even better here of course…

Royal recipes In the Swiss Cottage at Osborne the princesses learned how to bake and serve tea for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. If you visit today you can go back in time to 1861 and see preparations for tea. Osborne is where the Battenburg cake, the Victoria Sponge and the Osborne Pudding were invented.

Local brews Our pubs and restaurants are proud to serve our Island beers and ales from breweries like Goddards, Yates and Island Brewery. There’s wine from Rosemary Vineyard and Adgestone Vineyard and the Island even has its own distillery now, with hand crafted gin, vodka and whisky making the perfect tipple or takeaway souvenir.

Gurnard

Gurnard beach offers stunning sunsets looking towards yachts on the Solent. On a warm day it’s a popular spot for wandering along the promenade with an ice cream, whilst youngsters enjoy the playground overlooking the row of pretty beach huts.

St. Helens

St Helens is a perfect spot for people-watching, with paddlers and rockpoolers making the most of the still shallow wat ers. Out to sea, you can admire one of the Solent’s imposin g forts and there’s also a plaq ue on the ruin of a church tower marking the part that the area played in the French Armada. .

Compton Compton Bay has been named one of the “top 50 best beaches in the world” by the Sunday Times Travel Magazine. It’s a favourite with surfers and bodyboarders searching for the perfect wave. A drive over the top of the adjacent Military Road reveals one of the Island’s most memorable views.

Osborne Osborne Bay was Queen Victoria’s private beach and it finally opened to the public in 2012 for those visiting Osborne House. You can now sit in her Majesty’s ornate alcove where she spent many hours sketching the Solent.

Steephill Cove Steephill Cove is one of the Isle of Wight’s most charming spots, providing a welcome contrast to the Island’s bustling seaside resorts. It might not be the easiest beach to reach on the Isle of Wight, but it’s well worth the effort. On a warm day the Cove is quietly humming, with swimmers yelping and splashing in the clear waters and children exploring the rock pools at low tide.

Freshwater

Freshwater Bay is two beaches in one. The stoney section is popular with first-time ‘standup paddleboarders’ who you’ll often see trying to navigate away from the shore. Round to the right as you face the sea is a secluded sandy beach with rockpools at low tide.

Sandown & Shanklin

Sandown is a classic British seaside resort with more than a day’s entertainment for young or not so young visitors. Try out a pedalo, take a nostalgic walk on the pier, build a sandcastle or visit Sandham Gardens where you’ll find one of the Isle of Wight’s best playgrounds.

ADVENTURE ISLAND You will never be short of things to do on the Isle of Wight, with your next adventure waiting just around the corner. You may not think of the Isle of Wight as a destination for adrenalin junkies, but you’d be surprised! It’s the perfect playground for those looking for an adventure. The contrasting landscapes and surrounding seas allow for a huge range of exciting activities, from kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, tree climbing, mountainboarding, go karting, bushcraft, land yachting, and even zorbing! Thrill-seekers can brave white-knuckle rides at amusement parks, come face to face with tigers and crocodiles at animal kingdoms, swoop down to the beach on a chairlift over multi-coloured cliffs or go in search of creatures that walked the Island 130-million years ago.

BUCKLE UP FOR OUTDOOR ACTION Kayak around the coast

Practice your survival skills

The view of the Isle of Wight is even better from the water, and there are lots of places you can set off on kayaking sessions to explore the various bits of coast. You might even discover a hidden bay or two

Budding Bear Grylls’ can join a bushcraft session and learn how to build their own shelter, light a fire, gather water and cook food in the wild. Great outdoor fun whilst learning some pretty handy new skills!

Hurtle downhill on a Mountain Board

Take flight by Paragliding

There are miles of open terrain for you to explore on four wheels. Intro and adventure sessions are available, lasting an hour and two hours respectively, or once you’ve mastered the technique you can book yourself on a “day tour” – getting you out across the Island on some of the tougher trails.

Ride on a rib Enjoy an adrenaline charged blast out across the water by jumping on board a RIB charter. As well as a thrilling ride you’ll also get a speedy tour of the Island’s coast, with some even heading out past the landmark rocks at The Needles.

Enjoy a unique perspective of the Isle of Wight, riding up-draughts along our spectacular heritage coastline with a true “bird’s eye view”. Because of our weather and geography the Island often escapes the effects of some of the UK’s low pressure systems, which gives us more “flying” days than anywhere else.

All-weather go-karting Wight Karting offers a great racing day out for families, with a range of speed restricted karts enabling anyone from the age of 8 and upwards to have a go. For any “petrolheads” looking for some adrenaline fuelled fun the 460 metre track is the perfect arena, behind the wheel of one of their 270cc karts.

… AND GETTING AROUND Travelling around the Garden Isle is a pleasure – with buses, bicycles and trains all on offer, along with friendly advice from our Travel Ambassadors

Exploring the Island is easy and discovering those hidden beauty spots and unspoilt locations isn’t difficult at all. Leave the car behind and catch the bus for spectacular coastal views - there are also open-top “Breezer” tours, and a “hop on, hop off” Island Coaster service which has the capacity to carry bikes. Take in the stunning views from the top of a double-decker and let someone else do the driving!

We encourage you to ‘Drive Less, See More’, and on the eastern side of the Island that includes using the train. There’s a regular service operating from Ryde Pierhead which connects the towns of Ryde, Brading, Sandown, Lake and Shanklin. Enthusiasts will recognise that the carriages providing this service are former London Underground electric trains, giving the Island Line it’s very own unique identity and appeal.

The Isle of Wight is a year round cyclist’s paradise, with over 500 miles of cycle and bridleways weaving their way through dramatic and contrasting Island landscapes. The “Bicycle Island” offers something for every cyclist, from multi-day tours to relaxing afternoon rides, and we recently scooped top spot in Lonely Planet’s “Top 10 World Cycling Routes.”

USEFUL INFORMATION GRADINGS When you visit the Isle of Wight we want to make sure you have an experience you will remember and that you’ll come back time and time again. Quality is equally as important for us as it is for you and therefore most accommodation featured in this guide has been quality graded by either Visit England or the AA. Please be aware that gradings may change during the life of this guide and therefore it is advisable, before booking your accommodation, that you contact the establishment to clarify the current grading status or contact the grading authorities direct by visiting www.qualityintourism.com or www.theaa.com

THERE ARE TWO NATIONAL ASSESSING BODIES - VISIT ENGLAND AND THE AA.

ACCOMMODATION RATINGS MADE EASY

    

Simple, practical, no frills Well Presented and well run Good level of quality and comfort Excellent service throughout Exceptional with a degree of luxury

These quality ratings indicate the overall accommodation standard, cleanliness, ambiance, hospitality, service and quality of food. Generally the higher the star rating the higher the quality. Star Ratings are also accompanied by a category which describes the assessment criteria and includes Hotels, B&B’s, Self Catering, Hostels and Holiday Parks.

Both work to National Quality Assurance standards and use independent assessors.

HOTELS Hotels must be licenced, offer dinner at least 5 nights a week and all rooms must be en suite or have a private bathroom. Hotel categories include:

GUEST ACCOMMODATION

They must have a minimum of 6 bedrooms but more likely to have 20+ bedrooms.

Star ratings for Guest Accommodation reflect the visitor expectations of this sector, where quality is seen as more important than facilities and services. Higher star ratings are achieved by providing certain additional facilities and services. Guests Accommodation Categories include:

SMALL HOTELS

GUEST ACCOMMODATION

Have a maximum of 20 bedrooms and likely to be more personally run.

This category encompasses anything from one room bed and breakfast to the larger places found in our coastal resorts which may offer dinner and may be licensed.

HOTELS

COUNTRY HOUSE HOTELS Have ample grounds or garden, in a rural or semi rural location, with emphasis on peace and quiet. Other categories are Town House Hotel and Metro Hotel.

BED & BREAKFASTS Accommodate no more than 6 people. It’s like staying as a special guest in someone’s home.

FARMHOUSES Offer bed and breakfast and sometimes dinner, always on a farm.

GUEST HOUSES Tend to have more than 3 bedrooms and may offer dinner to their guests. Some may be licensed.

INNS Are pubs with rooms which serve food in the evenings as well as breakfast.

SELF CATERING Self Catering accommodation is assessed on layout, design, quality and range of kitchen equipment, quality and comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and cleanliness. Categories include Self-Catering, Serviced Apartments and Approved Caravan Holiday Homes.

HOSTELS Star rated accommodation often in shared rooms with bunk beds. Predominately group bookings only. May be fully serviced or Self Catering.

HOLIDAY, TOURING AND CAMPING PARKS Ratings are awarded for the overall quality with five stars being reserved for parks of exceptional quality. The categories include Holiday Park, Holiday Villages, Touring Park and Camping Park. NB. The AA award Pennant ratings ( ) rather than stars.

ACCOMMODATION AGENCIES

WWW.VISITISLEOF WIG HT.C O.U K

ACCOMMODATION AGENCIES It isn’t always easy choosing the right place to stay. Accommodation agencies can make the process much simpler and less stressful. An agency - which has its own list of properties and expert staff - can be a big help in making sure you pick the right place for your holiday. For example, you may need a two bedroom property with a large secluded garden, close to a pub that serves food, and not too far from the sea. It could pay you to let an agency do the work for you. Wherever you stay, we’re sure you’ll love the Island and will want to come back for more!

There are some good pubs and restaurants selling a range of different cuisines.

Lake Beach is located between the popular resort beaches of Sandown and Shanklin, and shares the same gently sloping golden sands and clear swimming waters. To the rear of Lake Beach (also known as Dunroamin Beach) the cliff rises steeply creating a dramatic looking natural screen and shelter for the beach, at the foot of which runs the sea wall and path / cycleway.

Being a traditional British seaside destination there is no shortage of places to grab an ice cream and snacks along the seafront in Sandown.

A short distance from the seafront at the Western side of the town you can stroll through Ventnor Park, which leads onto the famous Ventnor Botanic Gardens where the town’s micro-climate can be truly appreciated in a 22 acre sub-tropical paradise.

Many of Ventnor’s hotels are housed in charming Victorian buildings, and as a traditional holiday resort there is no shortage of places to stay in the local area. If you are looking for spectacular sea views Ventnor’s hillside location provides many of the buildings with this aspect, so be sure to check with the accommodation provider if this option is available when booking.

WEST WIGHT

A short walk from here and you will discover one of the Isle of Wight’s best kept secrets, Steephill Cove, which is one of the most relaxing beaches on the Island.

Along Ventnor esplanade there are several pubs, cafes and restaurants offering a variety of food and refreshments, with a number of alternative places to eat further into town. With the local fisheries there are some great fish and seafood options available at many of the eateries, and some of the local hotels are highly recommended for their fine dining experiences.

RURAL WIGHT

Ventnor has plenty of things to do both in the town and nearby. Ventnor Beach is a great suntrap, and the sand and shingle beach is great for sunbathing and family swimming. The beach huts that line the back of the beach are converted Victorian “bathing machines” and are available to hire, along with deckchairs.

On the main promenade there is a traditional arcade with a range of amusements, then opposite the harbour the spectacular Cascade Gardens run down the side of the cliff where the main road zig-zags its way back up into the main town. Further along there is a children’s paddling pool which features a giant map of the Isle of Wight, and from here there are great walks to Wheelers Bay and Bonchurch along the Sea Wall.

RYDE AND EAST WIGHT

The town lies beneath St Boniface Down (the highest point on the Isle of Wight) and for the most part is built on the side of a steep hill leading down to the seafront and beach.

COWES AND EAST COWES

Ventnor on the South of the Isle of Wight is a traditional seaside resort, and one of Britain’s most famous Victorian health resorts due to its unique micro-climate.

Cowes is the northern-most town on the Isle of Wight and has the unique feature of being split into two by the mouth of the River Medina.

COWES AND EAST COWES

Both sides of the town have award-winning beaches, which offer fantastic views across the Solent. Both Cowes beach and East Cowes beach provide great vantage points for many of the regular sailing events that take place in the town.

The West side of the town, usually known as just “Cowes”, has a foot passenger ferry link to the mainland, with one of the major vehicle ferry links to the Isle of Wight landing on the Eastern side, known as “East Cowes”.

It is easy to cross from one side of Cowes to the other across the river via the chain ferry, which is capable of carrying both foot passengers and vehicles. Cowes is a vibrant area for shopping, with many boutique stores mixed in with nautical stores and quirky gift shops, and it is easily navigated along the pedestrianised High Street. The parade which sits to the west of the town front is a great place to take a stroll, and makes for an easy scenic walk along to the neighbouring village of Gurnard.

There is a good variety of accommodation in Cowes, which during the summer months tends to fill up very quickly so it is best to book early if you want to stay locally. There are a few hotels and guesthouses in town and various holiday cottages and flats, with more options for camping, caravanning and holiday parks on the outskirts.

WEST WIGHT

Cowes offers a variety of different cuisines when you are looking for places to eat. Along with award winning restaurants selling locally sourced produce there are also some popular pubs selling traditional English food.

Cowes Week is one of the main events on the Isle of Wight calendar, and as the largest sailing regatta in the world it has been known to double the population of Cowes when it takes place during the summer. There are many other sailing events that take place from and to Cowes during the year, with the historic Royal Yacht Squadron providing the starting point for many races such as the Round the Island Race.

RURAL WIGHT

There are plenty of activities and things to do in Cowes. Sailing is obviously a very popular pastime, and if you are visiting there are several rib and yacht charter companies where you can hire a vessel. There are local museums where you discover more about the maritime and military histories of both Cowes and the Isle of Wight as a whole. Possibly the most famous attraction on the Isle of Wight is Queen Victoria’s former residence, the magnificent Osborne, which sits just outside of East Cowes.

There is also no shortage of places to grab a tasty snack or ice cream and sit by the marina to watch the boats in the Solent. RYDE AND EAST WIGHT

Both sides of the town are steeped in maritime heritage, with large marinas making them very popular for sailing all year round, and the world’s largest sailing regatta “Cowes Week” takes place here every summer.

THE HOME OF YACHTING If you’re staying in Cowes or visiting the town this summer then keep an eye on the water because there’s plenty of action going on! The world famous Cowes Week regatta brings more than 8,500 competitors and 100,000 spectators to the town in August.

It’s the largest event of its kind in the world, culminating in the spectacular Cowes Week firework display on the Friday night. There’s the Little Britain Challenge Cup too, Cowes Dinghy Week and the Classic Powerboat Race. Cowes is also a great place to stay during the Festival of The Sea (18 June to 3 July) which welcomes the Solitaire du Figaro French Sailing Race to the town for the first time (22 to 26 June).

The legendary Round the Island Race takes place on Saturday July 2nd. Cowes and yachting are intrinsically linked. The racing season brings vibrancy and glamour to the town and you don’t have to be a seasoned sailor to soak up the atmosphere!

With a number of cafes and restaurants located along both the seafront and into the town itself there is plenty of choice on offer for places to eat in Ryde. Both Union Street and Ryde High Street offer various cuisines from around the globe as well as a good range of bars and pubs for more traditional “pub grub”.

There are also various holiday cottage options in Ryde for those looking for a selfcatering break, and several campsites just outside of Ryde town offering caravan and camping options. Close by you will find Seaview, Bembridge and St Helens all offering charm and character and a wide variety of accommodation choices.

WEST WIGHT

As the largest town on the Isle of Wight it is little surprise that Ryde is the venue for some of the biggest events that take place annually. Every August bank holiday thousands of scooter enthusiasts descend upon Ryde for the Isle of Wight Scooter Rally, and only a few weeks later Ryde Esplanade can be seen covered in cherished classic cars for the International Classic Car Show.

As a long established seaside resort Ryde has a number of traditional hotels and guesthouses available to those looking for accommodation.

RURAL WIGHT

Ryde esplanade offers a number of great places for family entertainment, including the ice rink and superbowl. Further along there is a fun fair for young children and a very popular canoe lake which leads on to Ryde’s sandy beaches.

Tucked away on the south-west side of Ryde you will find the Play Lane Millennium Green, a tranquil beauty spot, perfect for relaxing with a picnic.

Ryde also holds one of the UK’s oldest carnivals, which is traditionally held at the end of the summer and forms the end of the Isle of Wight carnival season which travels across the Island.

RYDE AND EAST WIGHT

Ryde offers a great variety of things to do which will interest all ages, not least of which are the hovercraft and catamaran ferry from which you can travel to and from the mainland.

Continue along the seafront and you will discover the imposing Appley Tower, which is situated at the back of Appley beach, and even further along this walk you will reach the Victorian Fortification Battery at Puckpool Park.

COWES AND EAST COWES

In addition to an expanse of sandy beaches which stretch right along the town, Ryde has a great selection of boutique shops, museums and galleries for you to visit along with lots of other things to see and do along its esplanade.

VENTNOR AND SOUTH WIGHT

Ryde is the largest town on the Isle of Wight, and with its prominent position along the seafront and hovercraft and passenger ferry links it is little wonder it is often referred to as “The Gateway to the Island”.

ACCOMMODATION AGENCIES SHANKLIN SANDOWN AND LAKE VENTNOR AND SOUTH WIGHT

Some of the most beautiful Isle of Wight beaches are found over this side, with Compton Bay and Brook Beach offering a combination of sandy beaches and potential dinosaur discoveries! West Wight also offers a good choice of places to eat, with locally sourced food and produce central to many menus.

West Wight plays host to one of the largest and longest running events on the Isle of Wight in the Old Gaffers Sailing Festival in Yarmouth. In addition there are a number of other regular events including the world music festival “Rhythmtree” Open Studios arts and crafts and a closed road cycling event along the coast road in the “Wight Riviera”. There is a great range of choice for accommodation in West Wight, including bed & breakfasts, hotels and self-catering and holiday cottage breaks. In and around the main towns of Freshwater and Yarmouth there are a number of options, or if you prefer something quieter there are plenty of providers in rural locations. There are some fabulous secluded cottages, or if you prefer the comforts of a B&B you will find some splendid guesthouses.

WEST WIGHT

One of West Wight’s main attractions is the stunning landscape, with rolling downs, undeveloped coastline and unspoiled countryside making up an area of outstanding natural beauty. There is a rich variety of plant and animal life in a remarkably small area.

In the quiet corner of the Isle of Wight you’ll find every opportunity to rediscover the simple holiday pleasures. One of the most popular walks on the Isle of Wight is the Tennyson Trail, which starts at Carisbrooke Castle, and runs along the central ridge of West Wight.

Many of the coastal cafes and tearooms offer some of the most spectacular views on the Isle of Wight, giving you the option of a unique eating out experience.

RURAL WIGHT

Visit one of Britain’s most famous natural landscapes, the Needles Rocks where you can take a boat trip to get the best view. From here you can also see the famous coloured sands of Alum Bay.

For those that enjoy traditional attractions and activities there is a diverse selection that includes adventure parks, animal attractions, a 16th century castle and a converted Victorian fort.

RYDE AND EAST WIGHT

With lots to explore for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers alike, West Wight is a must-see during your holiday or short break on the Island.

COWES AND EAST COWES

The quieter side of the Isle of Wight is known as “West Wight”, and is a regular haven for those that enjoy outdoor and leisure activities.
