ISLE OF WIGHT BEACHES FROM BREATHTAKING CLIFFS TO ROLLING GREEN FIELDS AND SLEEPY TIDAL ESTUARIES TO ENDLESS SANDY BEACHES, THE ISLE OF WIGHT HAS AN INCREDIBLE RANGE OF NATURAL BEAUTY TO ENJOY. YET THE ISLAND IS ONLY 24 MILES BY 13 MILES AND YOU’RE NEVER MORE THAN NINE MILES FROM ONE OF OUR BEAUTIFUL BEACHES.
We have beaches to suit everyone, from traditional sandy bays with seaside attractions to sweeping shorelines where dinosaurs once roamed. To the south east are the ‘Bay Area’ beaches of Sandown and Shanklin with miles of golden sand and seafronts with amusements, pubs and cafés. Further north from here is Yaverland, which is popular for watersports. Ventnor in the south has a very traditional seafront and bay, with vintage beach huts and great cafés and pubs. There’s limited parking along the short seafront but large car parks at each end. In Ryde the sands go out for almost a mile when the tide recedes and the beach stretches all the way past Appley to Puckpool. There’s parking along the long seafront and a large car park at Appley. Seaview is stony but great for sailing and watersports, and nearby Seagrove Bay is only accessible on foot but sandy at low tide. St Helens has a pebble and sand beach and is bordered by beach huts made from old railway carriages and has two car parks on the Duver.
Bembridge Ledge surrounds the easternmost point of the Island leaving rockpools to explore at low tide. Cowes has a pebble beach but a little further west is Gurnard and the beach here, bordered by the green painted beach huts, is far more sandy and safe. Yarmouth has a short pebble beach but further west there are the traditional sandy beaches of Colwell and Totland, offering fabulous sunset views. Alum Bay’s world famous coloured sands are a sight to see. Nearby Freshwater has a pebble beach but clear waters for swimming and rockpools for exploring at low tide – there is a car park across the road. The south west coast has wild unspoiled beaches beneath towering cliffs. Compton Beach has a wide expanse of sand and rolling waves beneath the deep orange cliffs and is great for surfing.
Brook Beach has casts and footprints from dinosaurs and at low tide a petrified forest appears. Both have National Trust run car parks. Follow the coast down and there are more stunning beaches where you may not even see another soul. You have to negotiate a pathway down the tumbling cliffs to Blackgang Beach and be warned – it’s also a naturist beach! Steephill Cove is a hidden gem, only accessible by foot and the car parking is back on the main road, but it is well worth the effort to visit this pretty little bay below Ventnor Botanic Garden. So whether you’re looking for a traditional bucket and spade style of beach with deckchairs and windbreaks to hire or a beach that is untamed and free, you can take your pick on the Isle of Wight.

VENTNOR BEACH Small and perfectly formed, Ventnor Bay is a traditional beach, little changed since Victorian times. The old bathing machines have been converted into beach huts and cafés and pubs line the seafront. Access is down the winding cascade road with its waterfall gardens and a bandstand sits at the corner of the small haven.

SANDOWN AND SHANKLIN BEACHES There are miles of gently sloping sand and lots of things to see and do at these two traditional holiday beaches on the south east coast of the Island. Sandown has a pier with amusements where you can play crazy golf or choose from the many cafés and pubs along the seafront. Shanklin’s seafront with amusements and pirate themed crazy golf is below the main town and can be accessed via a lift from the top of the cliff.
RYDE BEACH At low tide the sands here stretch far out into the Solent and are the reason that Ryde has one of the longest piers in the country - at 745 yards it is second only to Southend Pier. The sands reach from Ryde, through Appley to Puckpool, and you can hire deckchairs, windbreaks and loungers. A kids’ playground, amusements and a bowling alley sit on Ryde seafront, along with pubs and cafés including the iconic Ryde Castle. Towards Appley is a large boating lake with swan pedalos.
COMPTON BEACH Likened to the surfing beaches of Cornwall and the West Country, Compton Beach is possibly the most beautiful on the Isle of Wight. With rolling waves, soft sands and deep orange cliffs with strata of many different colours, topped by lush green fields, it really is a stunning setting. Great for family beach days and for watersports such as surfing. The chalk ridge that stretches to the Needles emerges majestically from the western end, with far reaching views – often to Dorset on a clear day.

Red Funnel Ferries is the Isle of Wight specialist with over 155 years’ experience, carrying 3.4 million passengers annually on award-winning services between Southampton and the Island. Red Funnel also offer accommodation and packaged holidays, activity breaks and tickets to major events and attractions.
Hovertravel is the only yearround passenger hovercraft service in the world. Established in 1965, hovercraft link the Island community and the mainland with a brief but thrilling journey of under ten minutes, cruising at speeds of up to 30 knots. Hovertravel is also a frequent ferry service, with a craft every 30 minutes (increasing to every 15 minutes for the peak morning and evening periods) and a total of 70 crossings each day.
The vehicle ferry service runs from Southampton to East Cowes, operating 365 days a year, with hourly sailings during the peak season (journey time 55-60 minutes). Complementing the vehicle ferry route is the Hi-Speed Red Jet service, which offers foot passenger travel between Southampton and West Cowes on a half hourly service at peak times (journey time 23-25 minutes).
Hovertravel has two brand new craft which have been built locally. The hovercraft is symbolic of the ingenuity and determination of British inventors. Sir Christopher Cockerell invented the hovercraft on the Isle of Wight in the early 1960s and it was Island pioneers who created the Hovertravel service which has operated continuously for 50 years.
WIGHTLINK FROM PORTSMOUTH OR LYMINGTON Wightlink carries almost five million passengers across the Solent every year, across three key routes. The Portsmouth - Ryde foot passenger catamaran operates between Portsmouth Harbour railway station and Ryde Pier Head. This crossing takes just 22 minutes. Also running from Portsmouth Harbour is the Wightlink car and passenger ferry, connecting Portsmouth with Fishbourne. The Portsmouth Terminal is adjacent to Portsmouth Harbour railway station and the national and local bus interchange. The terminal is also easily reached from London via the A3. The Lymington - Yarmouth car & passenger ferry route is Wightlink’s most scenic ferry crossing and at just 40 minutes, it’s also the shortest and fastest car ferry route to the Isle of Wight.

The food we eat can make or break a holiday - and the Isle of Wight is as much of a feast for the stomach as it is for the eyes. Produce grows in abundance here, largely thanks to our fertile soils and unique mild climate. The Island is home to a working water mill, three breweries, two vineyards and a distillery; plus a whole host of farmers, growers, fishermen and independent artisan producers. The 62 mile long ‘Taste Around the Island Cycle Route’ has to be one of the best ways to see the Island. Allow four days to sedately ride around the Island (with a few walks uphill) on quiet country lanes. This will allow you plenty of time for stops at local food producers and gastro pubs en route. The route is way-marked with distinctive royal blue signs and there is a wealth of quality accommodation along the way, providing a rest from your ‘tour de food’.

There are over 500 miles of public rights of way to explore on the Island, and going by foot gives you some of the best views over the coast and countryside.
BY BIKE The Isle of Wight was recently voted as one of the world’s top cycling destinations by Lonely Planet, and an excellent network of cycleways and rail trails links up much of the Island. ‘Bicycle Island’ is also a great place for a cycling holiday. There are cycling routes to suit everyone, with a choice of challenging off-road bridleways, peaceful byways and level tracks on former railway lines. Within an area of just 147 square miles you will find over 200 miles of cycle routes enticing you into the countryside or along the coast. Cycles can be hired from a number of different outlets throughout the Island and there are companies that are able to offer a delivery service to your ferry port or accommodation, and guided rides.
The Isle of Wight is a walker’s paradise, filled with footpaths across contrasting landscapes and beaches, making it the ideal place for a walking holiday or break. This extensive network of footpaths can take you from a gentle meander along rural tree lined paths to longer challenging hikes over open fields and chalk downs. The Isle of Wight’s varied countryside includes fields, forests and woodland, providing the perfect complement to our 64 miles of coastal paths which cover rocky coves, estuaries, and dramatic cliff tops. BY TRAIN The Island Line train service operates from Ryde Pier Head. It connects the towns of Ryde, Brading, Sandown, Lake and Shanklin. The trains link up with both Ryde passenger ferry services. You can buy a throughticket from London Waterloo to any station along the Island Line network which will include travel via either of the foot passenger ferry services. The line is operated by South West Trains so any discounts which apply on their network are also valid on the Island Line and connections. The carriages might look familiar – they are former London Underground electric trains!
BY BUS You’ll see Southern Vectis buses wherever you go. There are 14 regular routes in operation connecting most parts of the Island. Regular buses run between the main towns and resorts until very late at night, with services to rural areas operating throughout the day. The bus service operates 365 days a year. Bus stops are easily accessible from the ferry terminals.
BY CAR Many of the roads on the Island are narrow, so please take extra care whilst driving on them and be aware of more vulnerable road users, such as cyclists, walkers and horse riders. The roads are well signposted, with brown signs pointing you to the majority of key attractions, events and places of interest. There are speed restrictions on roads across much of the Island, with several dedicated 20MPH zones.

Cyclists won’t be disappointed. ‘Bicycle Island’ is criss-crossed by trails, byways and a tangle of pretty country lanes that cry out to become lost in. You can push your own bikes onto the ferries for free or hire cycles while you’re here, including electric assist bikes from one of the cycle hire/tour companies on the Island. Baggage transfer services allow you to ride from place to place with only a credit card and picnic to weigh you down. For families or ‘easy riders’, try the Red Squirrel Cycle Trail. Give yourself a day and a half to navigate your way along the mostly flat and traffic free cycleways built on disused railway lines. This is a wonderful chance to spot red squirrels and other wildlife in the tree lined hedgerows.
The train and bus services will help you to explore the countryside. At tourist information points, you can find a series of leaflets entitled ‘Rambles by Bus’ produced by the Ramblers Association and the Island bus company. These ‘bus stop to bus stop’ walks take you through stunning scenery.
Visitors on foot can choose between the inland trails or the contrasting gradients of the circular coastal path.
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway from Wootton to Smallbrook Junction, has convenient connections to the Island Line which runs between Ryde and Shanklin. Or how about getting around on horseback? There are hundreds of miles of bridleways and a plethora of equestrian centres. And finally, why not try viewing the Island from the sea – you can go on an organised boat tour or hire sea kayaks, RIBs, dinghies or even a yacht. Anchors away!

Queen Victoria made Osborne House her summer home with Prince Albert. As a result the Isle of Wight became a major holiday resort for fashionable Victorians including her poet laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Charles Dickens and pioneering photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. You can visit Tennyson Downs where the famous poet would roam in a long black cloak and see his monument at the highest point. Bonchurch, where Dickens wrote much of David Copperfield, is a pretty village to the east of Ventnor and Dimbola, Julia Margaret Cameron’s former home in Freshwater Bay, is now a museum to her and a photographic gallery.
Julia’s home became a focal point for a crowd of bohemian artists, writers and poets including the sculptor and painter G.F. Watts, the Pre-Raphaelite painter William Holman Hunt and the actress Ellen Terry. Writers Edmund Lear and Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson), author of Alice in Wonderland, visited too. Winston Churchill’s parents met at a dance on a boat off Cowes and Winston spent a lot of time on the beach at Ventnor as a small boy. Karl Marx visited Ventnor at around the same time, although he was an older man. Warrior the war horse was foaled on the Isle of Wight and went to war on the Western Front with General Jack Seely, in 1914; with both returning in 1918.

QUEEN VICTORIA “It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot,” said Queen Victoria of Osborne when it was completed and her family spent their summer holidays at the estate, with Albert also building a Swiss Cottage and a fort in the grounds for the children. Victoria spent a lot of her later years here, adding a fabulous Indian banqueting room, The Durbar Room, after becoming Empress of India. In January 1901 she passed away in her bed at Osborne surrounded by members of her family.
In 1970 Freshwater became famous again when the largest ever pop festival was held in fields at nearby Afton, after two smaller pop festivals in 1968 and 1969. Jimi Hendrix’s performance at the festival, which attracted around 600,000 people, was his last before his untimely death less than 3 weeks later and a statue of him stands in the garden of Dimbola. Bob Dylan was persuaded to play at the 1969 festival held in Wootton, staying at a farmhouse in Bembridge while he was here. Several members of The Beatles came to that festival, also staying in Bembridge. They reference the Isle of Wight in their song ‘When I’m 64’. The festival was rekindled in 2002 and since then many of the biggest names in music have played here, and some of them have stayed here too. These include David Bowie, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleetwood Mac and Queen with Adam Lambert.

The Victorian resort of Ventnor is famous for its amazing botanical gardens where plants from all over the world thrive in the wonderful Island microclimate. Nearby is the famous area of natural beauty known as the Undercliff, a fascinating semitropical environment like no other on the Island.
The Isle of Wight is also home to an extremely varied cross section of wildlife past and present. There are many species of wildlife that you won’t find anywhere else in Britain. Creatures including rare bats, bugs and butterflies make their home in the Island’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Heritage Coast.

They live around the dramatic cliffs, long and hidden beaches, quiet estuaries, and the gently rolling patchwork of fields with secretive woodlands and open chalk downs, all of which are a haven for wildlife. Aside from the general landscape, we have a number of extraordinary nature reserves teeming with wildlife and both native and migrating birds. Ningwood Common has a varied and interesting mix of habitats: grassland, clay heath, and beautiful oak woodland. It’s where you can find many red squirrels, dormice, birds, delicate wild flowers and butterflies.
Above the woodland is High Hat, a spectacular viewpoint above the cliffs and forest. Arreton Down has an amazing 30 species of wildlife per square metre including the noisy Great Green Bush Cricket and an unusually named herb called the Bastard Toad Flax. From the top of the down, you’ll get incredible views across the Island – north, south, east and west, as far as the Needles!
Some of our reserves are small, fragile and home to very rare species which can only be accessed by a permit or viewed from outside their perimeter. An example of this is the beautiful St Lawrence woods, where ancient paths cross the warm and humid woodland. This fascinating area is on the largest rotational landslip in Western Europe. The wood accommodates many species of bats (there are 17 species in the UK and 14 of them can be found on the Isle of Wight).
RED SQUIRRELS The Isle of Wight provides a sanctuary for thousands of red squirrels. The aggressive American Greys are not allowed on the Island and the Solent acts as a natural barrier. One of the best places to see red squirrels is Parkhurst Forest, which has some of the best oak and pines on the Island and was mentioned in the Domesday records as a royal hunting forest. Another hot spot is Alverstone Mead Nature Reserve’s ‘Trail of Discovery’ which passes through water meadows and woodland and you may even get to feed these squirrels by hand! Other great places to see red squirrels at play include Rylstone Gardens in Shanklin and Robin Hill Country Park.

COWES THE MARITIME GATEWAY TO THE ISLE OF WIGHT
Renowned the world over, Cowes is the maritime gateway to the Isle of Wight, welcoming thousands of boats to Cowes Week and its other prestigious sailing regattas.
During Cowes Week, The Parade on Cowes seafront is taken over with a stage, bars and stalls filling the area and providing opportunities for dancing in the streets! Many regattas are held in Cowes throughout the sailing season, including the Cowes Classics Week, the Panerai Classic Week, Cowes Week, Etchells World, Little Britain and the annual Powerboat Race. When you’re not sailing you can dine on the finest foods and indulge in some top end retail therapy in the two town centres of Cowes and East Cowes. The eclectic mix of shops supply everything from ropes and tackle to ballgowns, and eateries range from welcoming cafes and bars to high end brasserie dining.
Boat owners have moorings in the marinas on each side of the river Medina, bringing a cosmopolitan feel to the coastal towns of Cowes and East Cowes. It’s a place where you can escape from the world on a remote walk along a deserted stretch of the coast - or grab a piece of the action and shop, eat out or sail. Cowes is buzzing year round with a range of quality independent shops and places to eat. There are excellent facilities for visiting and local boat owners in the various marinas in the town.
The marinas include Cowes Yacht Haven is the most central marina with berthing for up to 260 boats. Shepherd’s Wharf has berthing for 130 visiting boats, 40 residents, and a basin for the exclusive use of dry sailing clients. East Cowes Marina has a further 380 berths. With the Red Funnel car ferry from Southampton docking in East Cowes and the Red Jet bringing foot passengers to the Fountain Yard in Cowes, the harbour is a busy, bustling waterway, especially in the summer months.
Any trip to Cowes should include a visit to Osborne, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s summer palace by the sea. You’ll be seeing more of this attraction in cinemas in 2017, when Victoria & Abdul opens. Filmed on the Island, and starring Judi Dench, it tells the story of the queen’s relationship with her Indian servant Abdul Karim. Queen Victoria and Albert will also return to TV screens this year with the second series of ITV’s acclaimed drama Victoria.

GETTING TO THE ISLE OF WIGHT THE ISLE OF WIGHT IS LOCATED IN THE SOUTH OF THE UK AND IS REALLY EASY TO GET TO, AND ONCE YOU ARE HERE YOU WON’T WANT TO LEAVE! Less than an hour and a half’s journey from London by train, the Isle of Wight is ideally located for English visitors looking for a holiday or short break, and straightforward to reach from all the major UK airports.
TRAINS There are excellent rail connections to all the major ferry ports, providing fast access to the Isle of Wight from across the UK. Travel time from London stations to most of the ports is less than an hour and a half, and many ferry services coincide with train arrival times – inclusive tickets can also be purchased.

Easing us out of the winter during February half term is the Spirit of the Orient – an atmospheric festival of lights, set in the ancient woodland at Robin Hill Country Park.
Newport Jazz Weekend is the first weekend in June – you can catch some hot jazz and cool blues at venues ranging from theatres to pubs.
MAY Isle Walk 2017 includes Walk the Wight, an Island institution that attracts thousands of walkers every year. The route crosses the entire width of the Island, starting in Bembridge and finishing at the Needles – although you can choose to do a section, rather than the full 26 miles. Many people walk or run the route in fancy dress to raise money for Earl Mountbatten Hospice. In May, there’s also the Wolverton Folk and Blues Fair which takes place in the beautiful grounds of Wolverton Manor near Shorwell.
Next up is the Isle of Wight Festival – perhaps the most iconic festival in the world. It’s where Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and The Doors played between 1968-1970. The festival was reborn in 2002 and continues to attract some of the biggest names in the biz. Another favourite is the Festival of the Sea. This incorporates the Round the Island Race, which is one of the world’s largest and most famous yacht races. Over two weeks you can attend a range of amazing nautical events including the pirate-themed Shipwreck Isle, a two day event packed with family fun.

JULY One of the highlights in the sailing calendar – and definitely ours – is Cowes Week, which kicks off on 29th July 2017. The regatta is the biggest sailing event in the world and attracts thousands of people every day for the sailing races, entertainment, food and fireworks.
AUGUST As well as Ventnor Fringe other great festivals in August include VDub near Newport which celebrates all things Volkswagen. Meanwhile Jack up the 80s brings musical legends, ra-ra skirts and legwarmers to Smallbrook Stadium, just outside Ryde. Foodies will enjoy the Garlic Festival, which offers a fun filled weekend of entertainment with a focus on the incredible range of garlic grown at the nearby Garlic Farm. You can sample foods including garlic beer and ice cream (perhaps an acquired taste!). Also look out for the Healing Festival in the serene setting of Ventnor Botanic Garden; and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s annual Steam Show. Plus over the August Bank Holiday you can enjoy the spectacle of 5,000 mods on scooters descending on the Island for their annual rally.

ISLE OF WIGHT EVENTS 2017 SEPTEMBER There’s plenty to do in Autumn with a Charity Classic Car event, held on Newport Quay and Ryde seafront, with vintage vehicles from all over the UK and mainland Europe. Ryde’s Illuminated Carnival is the biggest carnival of the year with thousands of spectators lining the streets. Come and join the fun and soak up the heady atmosphere of the evening. Finally don’t miss Bembridge Harbour Food Festival for gourmet treats.
OCTOBER In October, Harp on Wight brings harp music to the seaside town of Ryde with live performances, workshops, lessons and exhibitions. Then the Literary Festival moves into historic Northwood House in Cowes and a whole host of big name writers come to inspire their readers with talks on everything from the future of computing to housewives in Nazi Germany. During October, it’s the Festival of Light at Robin Hill Country Park. Plus it’s the eagerly awaited Classic Buses, Beer and Walks Weekend – 70 vintage buses took part in 2016, taking thirsty passengers to and from the Island’s top pubs!
DECEMBER Closing the year in glittering style is the Brighstone Christmas Tree Festival. There are ‘theme decorated’ trees all around the pretty villages of Brighstone and Mottistone – last year, there were over 200 trees decked out in spectacular style by local schools, charities and other organisations. There’s also carol singing, mulled wine and mince pies. Happy Christmas everyone!

These quality ratings indicate the overall accommodation standard, cleanliness, ambiance, hospitality, service and quality of food. Generally the higher the star rating the higher the quality. Star Ratings are also accompanied by a category which describes the assessment criteria and includes Hotels, B&B’s, Self Catering, Hostels and Holiday Parks.
THERE ARE TWO NATIONAL ASSESSING BODIES - VISIT ENGLAND AND THE AA. Both work to National Quality Assurance standards and use independent assessors.
