The Isle of Wight is often described as Britain in miniature, with a wide range of beaches, bays and coves all within a short car journey. Here are five of our favourites:
Compton Bay
03
Compton Bay’s unspoilt cliffs, choppy waters and sandy shore are popular with bodyboarders, surfers and sandcastle builders. The climbing clifftop road from the beach to nearby Freshwater Bay is one of the prettiest drives on the Island.

Bembridge
01
Bembridge’s shallow ston y waters cover a world of sea anemones, crabs and seahorses which emerge at low tide. Join the rockpoo lers for an afternoon of searching and squealing as creatures scuttle out from their hiding places. Complet e the day with a visit to the village’s working lifeboat station.
Ventnor
16
Ventnor’s southerly position and steep hills give it an appealing feeling of seclusion from the outside world. There are highly regarded places to eat in the town and on the esplanade, as well as awardwinning waters for swimming and a paddling pool for younger visitors.
Gurnard
07
Gurnard sits alongside the busy sailing town of Cowes, looking out over beach huts of yachts and cruise liners on the Solent. Sit and enjoy the busy scene with an ice cream, or walk along Princes Esplanade for a browse in the boutique shops of Cowes.

See our stunning landscape on two legs, two wheels or from the air.
A week on a deckchair with warm sand between your toes and a book in your hand may be exactly what you need from your Isle of Wight holiday. However, those looking for something a little more energetic will find plenty to get hearts racing. There are 500 miles of footpath on the Isle of Wight, many of which show off an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which covers about half of the Island. Cycle or walk along the stunning coastal path or earn the views from the top of the downs in the east. In May, there is a string of events for cyclists and walkers, including The Pearl Izumi Tour Series cycle race and the 25th Walk the Wight, which is expected to attract 10,000 charity walkers. You’ll find some of our rarest residents in woodland like Parkhurst Forest or nature reserves in Newtown or Brading. Red squirrel spotting is a favourite activity, although they are notoriously shy. New for 2015 is the ‘Dinosaur Safari Guide’, which shows off the very best places to search for evidence of the creatures which once dominated the Isle of Wight. Our 65 miles of coastline offer a playground for water lovers, with lessons available for first time surfers, windsurfers and kayakers. Younger visitors will enjoy bodyboarding in the waves at Compton Bay or the pedalos at Shanklin. We even stretch to ‘standup paddleboard yoga’ for those wanting to achieve tranquillity on a 10 foot board. On the more extreme end of the scale, you’ll find experiences like professional tree climbing, cliff-top paragliding, mountain boarding and go-karting. Or how about joining a ‘coasteering’ instructor on a tour of hidden caves and secluded spots which ordinary swimmers can’t reach? Enjoy the deckchair, but why not create some new memories too?

If the thought of grabbing your bike, blazing down a chalk ridge trail, then speeding through ancient woodland before arriving at a stunning secluded beach for a spot of kayaking ticks your boxes then look no further than the Isle of Wight. We’ve got the perfect spot for any adventurous activity. Our small, but spectacularly formed island offers an amazing range of activities in an easily accessible area. We’ve got 65 miles of awesome coastline which creates a superb playground for water lovers. Sunlit bays of crystal clear water invite a spot of stand up paddle boarding, hidden caves and secluded inlets offer the perfect environment for coasteering. If your thrill seeking is less hands-on, why not sit back and experience the power of an exhilarating rib ride. Immerse yourself in the diversity of our landscape and you’ll encounter an intoxicating mix of adrenaline, speed and nature. Try one of the UK’s newest adventure sports; technical tree climbing, pick up speed on the go karting track or simply spin down magnificent chalky downland in a big ball! There’s loads of adventure to be had on the Isle of Wight, for the fearless and the fearful alike. We’re easy to get to and we’re up for an adventure all year round. Why not challenge yourself and your mates to enjoy an adventure experience that is absolutely and completely Pure Wight!

You’ll find family fun days out are never far away on the Isle of Wight
We like to think that the Isle of Wight has more family-friendly attractions per square mile than anywhere in Britain, so you won’t be short of ideas for days out. You can come face to face with animals from around the world at one of our many wildlife parks or bring prehistoric history to life with the Dinosaur Island App. Some visitors join the search for fossils in our crumbling cliffs on an organised hunt, whilst others prefer to see some of the greatest discoveries at an interactive dinosaur museum. On our coastline you can step inside a working lighthouse, walk along the country’s oldest pier, or take home the family trophy at an esplanade minigolf course. You can see carnival queens parade through seaside towns, spot celebrities at Cowes Week or grab a weekend ticket at Bestival or the Isle of Wight Festival. The Island’s rich history can be seen at English Heritage and National Trust attractions, with castles and stately homes revealing dramatic stories of the lives of kings and queens. There are also Roman villas and ancient churches alongside more recent tales of Jimi Hendrix performing to thousands and of the Isle of Wight’s role in the space race. Food fans can visit vineyards and farm shops offering local produce, whilst younger visitors will love the seaside playgrounds and clifftop theme park rides. You won’t be able to see everything in one visit but we hope you’ll be back again to tick a few more things off your list.

Ryde is the largest town on the Island, and it stands next to a golden sand beach which goes on for miles. Ryde Esplanade offers a number of great places for family entertainment, including a fun-fair, Swimming Pool and canoe lake which leads on to Ryde’s sandy beaches. Continue along the seafront and you will discover the imposing Appley Tower, and even further along this walk you will reach the Victorian Fortification Battery at Puckpool Park. With a number of cafes and restaurants located along both the seafront and into the town itself there is plenty of choice on offer for places to eat offering various cuisines as well as a good range of bars and pubs for more traditional “pub grub”. Both Union Street and Ryde High Street offer a great selection of boutique and independent shops. Ryde hosts some of the biggest events that take place annually. Every August bank holiday thousands of scooter enthusiasts descend upon Ryde for the Isle of Wight Scooter Rally. Ryde also holds one of the UK’s oldest carnivals which forms the end of the Isle of Wight carnival season that travels across the Island. Travelling out of town and heading east, the Island takes on a different feel. There are some atmospheric coastal villages here, including Seaview which is a busy sailing centre in the summer, while still retaining its character (and, of course, some excellent dining!). Further on, Bembridge is another major sailing centre. It has a charming harbour, a beach with rockpools, and no shortage of shops and galleries to browse round. Bembridge is also home to a National Trust windmill, and offers pubs and hotels to encourage you to linger longer.

Newport is the Island ’s capital town and it bustles with life. Cowes is the northern-most town on the Isle of Wight and has the unique feature of being split into two by the mouth of the River Medina. Newport is home to theatres, clubs, a cinema, and a host of great shops and other attractions … not to mention a wide variety of places to eat and drink. The legendary Isle of Wight Festival is staged just a 15 minute walk from the town centre. The festival site is right by the river Medina where you can walk or cycle. The Quay Arts centre stands at the head of the Newport waterfront. Not far away is Carisbrooke Castle, where Charles I was held prisoner, and the Newport Roman Villa is on the outskirts of the town, too. Cowes is steeped in maritime heritage, with large marinas making it very popular for sailing all year round. Cowes is home to one of the biggest sporting events in the world, Cowes Week - when the world’s top sailors join up with enthusiastic amateurs to stage a festival of sailing like no other. But Cowes is an attractive destination at any time, with a friendly atmosphere, great shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs. Just across the estuary by the historic chain ferry, East Cowes has its own marina, promenade and shops. And just up the road is Osborne, Queen Victoria’s favourite home, now beautifully preserved by English Heritage. The house has splendid grounds and its own beach.

The bay area is a traditional family resort famous for its golden sandy beaches. You can relax and spend quality time strolling along Sandown Beach followed by an ice cream or refreshments at one of the licensed beach cafés. The main town beach stretches all the way along the Esplanade where it meets with Yaverland Beach, which is popular for watersports. If you can tear yourself away from the beach, you’ll find the town has a great choice of restaurants and pubs. Sandown has lots of things to do for people of all ages and interests. With a great selection of attractions, including a Zoo housed in an old fort and Dinosaur Isle, just down the seafront, tells the full story of why the Isle of Wight has become known as ‘dinosaur Island’. The area around Sandown Bay is a good place to go fossil hunting, to see if you can find your own piece of history washed up by the waves.

One of the town’s most well-known features is Sandown Pier. There is a range of traditional amusements and arcade games, with bowling, crazy golf and cafes to keep adults and children entertained for hours. Being a traditional British seaside destination there is no shortage of places to grab an ice cream and snacks along the seafront in Sandown. The sea air is wonderful, and a walk along the coastal path to Shanklin is the perfect way to enjoy it. Shanklin really is the most charming of traditional seaside resorts with its glorious long wide sandy beach set against a backdrop of dramatic sandstone cliffs. Relax and unwind on the golden sands, hire a traditional beach hut or, for the more energetic, try the water sports on offer. Whatever your age or interests there are lots of things to do in Shanklin. Shanklin Esplanade, lined with traditional seaside games, amusements, cafes, hotels, restaurants and pubs, is the perfect place to while away your day. Shanklin offers a lovely mix of the seaside and open, green space with some fantastic parks and gardens. Rylstone Gardens provide the most tranquil and beautiful spot to sit and soak up the sunshine. Lose yourself in the history and character of Shanklin Old Village packed with charming thatched cottages.

Ventnor on the South of the Isle of Wight is a traditional seaside resort, and one of Britain’s most famous Victorian health resorts due to its unique micro-climate. The town lies beneath St Boniface Down (the highest point on the Isle of Wight) and for the most part is built on the side of a steep hill leading down to the seafront and beach.

VENTNOR CARNIVALS Ventnor Main Carnival Wednesday 12th August 2015 Ventnor Illuminated Carnival Saturday 15th August 2015
Ventnor has plenty of things to do both in the town and nearby. Ventnor Beach is a great suntrap, and the sand and shingle beach is great for sunbathing and family swimming. The beach huts that line the back of the beach are converted Victorian “bathing machines” and are available to hire, along with deckchairs. On the main promenade there is a traditional arcade with a range of amusements, then opposite the harbour the spectacular Cascade Gardens run down the side of the cliff where the main road zig-zags its way back up into the main town. Further along there is a children’s paddling pool which features a giant map of the Isle of Wight, and from here there are great walks to Wheelers Bay and Bonchurch along the Sea Wall. A short distance from the seafront at the Western side of the town you can stroll through Ventnor Park, which leads onto the famous Ventnor Botanic Gardens where the town’s micro-climate can be truly appreciated in a 22 acre sub-tropical paradise. A short walk from here and you will discover one of the Isle of Wight’s best kept secrets, Steephill Cove, which is one of the most relaxing beaches on the Island. Along Ventnor esplanade there are several pubs, cafes and restaurants offering a variety of food and refreshments, with a number of alternative places to eat further into town. With the local fisheries there are some great fish and seafood options available at many of the eateries, and some of the local hotels are highly recommended for their fine dining experiences.

The quieter side of the Isle of Wight is known as “West Wight ”, and is a haven for those that enjoy outdoor and leisure activities. With lots to explore for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers alike, West Wight is a must-see during your holiday or short break on the Island.

Visit one of Britain’s most famous natural landscapes, the Needles Rocks where you can take a boat trip to get the best view. From here you can also see the famous coloured sands of Alum Bay. One of West Wight’s main attractions is the stunning landscape, with rolling downs, undeveloped coastline and unspoiled countryside making up an area of outstanding natural beauty. There is a rich variety of plant and animal life in a remarkably small area. For those that enjoy traditional attractions and activities there is a diverse selection that includes adventure parks, animal attractions, a 16th century castle and a converted Victorian fort. In the quiet corner of the Isle of Wight you’ll find every opportunity to rediscover the simple holiday pleasures. One of the most popular walks on the Isle of Wight is the Tennyson Trail, which starts at Carisbrooke Castle, and runs along the central ridge of West Wight. Some of the most beautiful Isle of Wight beaches are found over this side, with Compton Bay and Brook Beach offering a combination of sandy beaches and potential dinosaur discoveries! West Wight also offers a good choice of places to eat, with locally sourced food and produce central to many menus. Many of the coastal cafes and tearooms offer some of the most spectacular views on the Isle of Wight, giving you the option of a unique eating out experience.

TRAVEL & TRANSPORT
It’s so easy! Getting here and getting around is refreshingly straightforward. There are ferry crossings daily throughout the year and you can choose from a variety of ports - Southampton, Portsmouth, Southsea and Lymington. Ferry routes connect with road, rail and coach links to whisk you to your Island destination. Enjoy a leisurely crossing by car ferry or one of the high-speed passenger ferries for an exciting short journey. If you are not bringing a car with you, access remains superb with a comprehensive network of bus services running seven days a week, especially geared towards visitors. Travel by car is easy on the Island, but bus services link up with each ferry terminal to make this a very tempting and environment friendly alternative. Travel by bus also gives you the chance to take in the scenery, while someone else does the driving, of course! And don’t forget that the Island is rated as one of the best cycling destinations in the world - so why not leave the car behind and use pedal power?
