Kingsport not only boasts beautiful natural surroundings and seasonal climates but also a proud heritage, rich in history and culture.

HISTORY

Allandale Mansion

The first permanent settlements of Kingsport were built in 1775 along the banks of the Holston River. William King of Saltville, Va., bought the first two lots in original Kingsport in 1802 and developed river, stage and store commerce. Kingsport was first chartered in 1822 and re-incorporated in 1917. The railroad arrived in town in 1909 and, as the first city with a modern urban design, Kingsport was the leader in using a city management system of government. Kingsport will mark its Centennial in 2017 with a yearlong celebration of events and activities.

George Eastman became a key player in the growth and economic development of Kingsport. In 1920, he purchased a wood distillation plant for Eastman Kodak’s photographic base, which today is operated as Eastman’s world headquarters. History enthusiasts can explore Kingsport’s many historical attractions, including the Exchange Place, a restored pioneer homestead built during the 1800s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Exchange Place hosts an annual Fall Festival, showcasing regional handmade crafts, as well as other holiday-related events.

The Netherland Inn, built in the 1800s, boasted such distinguished visitors as presidents Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson. Behind the Netherland Inn, the Netherland Inn Log Cabin Children’s Museum offers guests of any age the opportunity to experience a child’s world in the 18th and 19th centuries. Furnished with authentic toys, clothes and learning games from the period, this museum offers a glimpse into the past.

Downtown Kingsport offers unique historical interest. City planners designed Church Circle as the focal point of the city. Four large churches border the town circle and attract both worshippers and visitors. The downtown area consists of many charming older buildings that have been restored.

The beautiful and gracious Allandale Mansion was built in 1950 by Harvey C. and Ruth Haire Brooks. The Brooks family willed the Georgian-style mansion to the City of Kingsport in 1969 to be used as a public facility and it now serves as a symbol of Kingsport’s hospitality. Friends, families and colleagues gather at Allandale to celebrate weddings, holidays and other joyous events. visitkingsport.com
