Centennial Park Coming November 2017
Located in the Downtown District, Kingsport’s Centennial Park will provide a unique destination and link to downtown Kingsport that commemorates the community’s past, present and future. This legacy project of enduring value celebrates the Kingsport Spirit for Kingsport’s centennial, positively impacting the people of Kingsport for many years to come. Elements include a community gathering place, a historic brick walkway that circles the park telling the story of modern Kingsport by decade, and a water feature that serves as play place for the young and young at heart.
CAROUSEL & FARMER’S MARKET This stunning sight features 32 hand-carved, whimsical platform animals and two chariots. Kingsport’s history encircles the carousel through 24 rounding boards that feature painted scenes from the city’s past. The carousel is open year-round, five days a week. Netherland Inn Listed on the National Register of Historical Sites, the Netherland Inn rises above the Holston River. The restored Inn faces the Old Stage Road in the heart of Kingsport’s Boat Yard District, an area along the Holston River that served as a migratory spot for settlers to build boats for their westward trip during the mid-1700s. William King originally built Netherland Inn between 1802 and 1808 as a point where he could ship salt westward. He later sold the Inn in 1818 to Richard Netherland who procured a stage contract and established the Inn and Tavern for travelers along the Old Stage Road. The Inn hosted many famous persons, including Presidents Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson and James K. Polk. The Inn is filled with museum furnishings that depict an intimate study of life in one of the South’s most important American frontier settlements. Warriors’ Path State Park The park is one of the most popular sites in the state for family camping, picnicking and outdoor recreation. Enjoy more than 12 miles of trails for hikers. Mountain bikers will enjoy a challenging series of rides on our mountain bike trails. Guided horseback rides offer yet another perspective on the park. The marina offers paddle boats and fishing boats for rent. The park has 135 campsites, all with tables and grills, of which 94 are equipped with water and electrical hookups. GRAY FOSSIL SITE The East Tennessee State University and General Shale Brick Natural History Museum is one of the few museums in the world located next to an extensive fossil site – the Gray Fossil Site – in Gray, Tennessee.This fossil site is internationally recognized as one of the most significant prehistoric discoveries in North America!
