Welcome to Knox County! We’re honored that you’ve chosen to visit our incredible community and I’m excited to share with you some of the things that make this area my favorite. I’ve traveled all over the United States and to over 40 countries during my career with WWE and I’ve chosen to call Knox County home for several reasons. First, of course, is our people and our geography. You won’t find a more welcoming and scenic community no matter the time of year. While you’re here, I encourage you to visit our local shops and restaurants not only downtown, but in the outlying communities as well. Be sure to catch a show at one of our many great entertainment venues, including the Historic Bijou Theatre which is celebrating its 110th anniversary in 2019. Also, the Tennessee Valley Fair will celebrate its 100th anniversary with top-notch concerts, food and fun. No matter what you’re into, there’s something for you in Knox County.

A River Runs Through It Step to the edge of downtown Knoxville and you’ll appreciate that a river truly does run through it. Knoxville’s history is tied to this river. James White settled Knoxville along the French Broad River just above where it joins the Holston River to form the Tennessee River. And our future is building on it. Throughout the year, the Tennessee River welcomes crew teams, paddle boarders, rowers, anglers and of course, the Vol Navy. In March 2019, it will welcome Bassmaster Classic, the ultimate fishing competition and fan experience. It’s easy to enjoy yourself along the river. Four beautiful riverside parks (all within minutes of downtown) offer spectacular views and access to the Tennessee River - plus paved greenways, natural trails, sprawling open space, playgrounds and water parks. These include Suttree Landing Park, home to Knoxville’s South Waterfront Celebration Second Bell Fest. The River Landing at Ijams Nature Center features hiking and biking trails, lake paddling and swimming, nature programs and rock climbing. As the home of Calhoun’s on the River, Volunteer Landing is a top pick for football fans, greenway runners and cyclists, and fans of the Powerboat races that take place on the river every June. Volunteer Landing is also your boarding spot for river cruises on The Star of Knoxville Riverboat or the Volunteer Princess. Further down the Tennessee, Concord Park puts you on the river with ease thanks to a beach, kayak and paddle board rentals and boat launches. Plan your trip around a Summer Concert at The Cove and enjoy local music at sundown.

2019 VISITORS GUIDE I visitknoxville.com
There’s really no end to the adventure. The Holston River, the longest and most scenic tailwater in the Tennessee Valley, is one of Tennessee’s premier fly fishing destinations. An easy paddle from Holston River Park to downtown Knoxville offers non-stop scenic beauty and surprising glimpses of blue heron, otters and other river inhabitants. And speaking of wildlife… Fifteen river and road miles from the head of the Tennessee, Seven Islands State Bird Park is the signature start of an experience along the French Broad, the third oldest river in the world. The park earns its national reputation for exceptional birding with more than 190 species of birds sighted. Songbirds, hawks and waterfowl can be seen along the meadow trails and several old barns are a favorite refuge for Barn Owls. Make a Tennessee River Experience part of your Knoxville getaway. Carol Evans Executive Director, Legacy Parks Foundation
Located just 10 minutes from downtown on the shores of the Tennessee River, Suttree Landing Park takes its name from Cormac McCarthy’s 1979 classic “Suttree”. The novel’s primary setting is a Knoxville underworld of riverside shantytowns and tavernboats, and the south bank is the setting for some scenes in the book. The park is part of the booming revitalization of South Knoxville and ongoing riverfront development in Knoxville. Photography by Bruce McCamish

Music Permeates Everything You won’t find a city anywhere with a more active music scene than Knoxville. Maybe there are bigger scenes in much bigger cities, but in Knoxville music permeates everything. There’s music in theaters, clubs and restaurants all through town and, no matter what weekend you might be going out, chances are good there’s a festival going on that’s loaded with music or simply dedicated to it. Knoxville’s history is saturated in sound. Long before Knoxville was recognized as the musical destination, it was known as a starting point or thoroughfare for talent. The number of music greats who got their start in Knoxville is remarkable. The best known include international superstar Dolly Parton, The Everly Brothers, Kenny Chesney and legendary guitarist and producer Chet Atkins. The city has supplied stars to the Grand Ole Opry since 1938 when Knoxville’s Roy Acuff first appeared on the show. More recently, the city has provided favorites on national talent competition shows, including Chris Blue and Emily Ann Roberts of “The Voice.” While country music may dominate the city’s history, Knoxville has always provided a home for a variety of musical styles. The city’s yearly Rhythm N’ Blooms Festival leans toward Americana and rock. The Tennessee Valley Fair, now celebrating 100 years, brings veteran pop and country artists to town. Waynestock celebrates the city’s homegrown talent with a yearly two- or threeday showcase. Second Bell Fest at Suttree Landing Park highlights the local and regional entertainment communities at the city’s newest riverfront park. The city’s most high22

profile music festival, Big Ears, brings fans from all over the world to town to see some of music’s most acclaimed cutting edge classical, rock, folk and avant garde artists. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Aram Demirjian, has followed suit with Big Ears, stretching out from the usual composers to include modern and acclaimed young composers in programs. The Knoxville Opera also continues to bring new audiences with a crowd-pleasing schedule. Likewise, the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra has a yearly series of concerts featuring jazz legends and young firebrands. While Knoxville has an abundance of local talent, artists from around the country have relocated to Knoxville because of the number of opportunities for exposure. Local artists are featured regularly on radio stations, including WDVX, WUTK, WFIV and WUOT. There are plenty of small music venues, including Barley’s, The Pilot Light, Preservation Pub, Boyd’s Jig and Reel, The Birdhouse and Open Chord. Touring artists perform in the city’s historic Bijou Theatre, now celebrating its 110th anniversary of opening, and the Tennessee Theatre, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2018, as well as The Mill & Mine, Knoxville Coliseum and ThompsonBoling Arena. Nashville and Memphis are certainly better known as Tennessee music cities, but the attitude and style in Knoxville is different and harder to define. Don’t pass up the chance to experience it. 110 Years of Entertainment Opened in 1909, the Bijou is one of Tennessee’s oldest surviving theatres. This vaudeville-style dramatic theatre once hosted the likes of the Marx Brothers, Sophie Tucker, Will Rogers, and Tallulah Bankhead, but its building is more historic still. The theatre was built into the back of a ca. 1817 hotel that had already witnessed a grand reception for the young Andrew Jackson, the deaths of two Civil War generals, and a speech by President Rutherford B. Hayes. The second balcony, now closed, was reserved for black patrons.

Feed Your Body, Mind & Soul For those whose travel destinations lean heavily on a city’s food and beverage scene, consider this a promise. Knoxville will not disappoint. Southern food and moonshine whiskey might be one’s initial impression due to the city’s geographic location, but to pigeonhole Knoxville’s culinary offerings to that alone would be to sell this city short. Sure, there are plenty of Southern and Appalachian-inspired restaurants from which to choose. Jackie’s Dream and Pete’s Restaurant come to mind. But Knoxville also has J.C. Holdway, owned by Knoxville native and James Beard Award winning chef Joseph Lenn. Lenn spent 10 years honing his culinary skills at Blackberry Farm, and he’s not the only Blackberry Farm alum in the city. Knoxville continues to embrace a culinary growth partly fueled by the Blackberry Farm influence, where expert culinary masters and wait staff bring the highest standards in food preparation and service bar none. Chef Matt Gallaher, owner of Knox Mason and Emilia, fits into that category, as does Chef Drew McDonald, owner of The Plaid Apron.
It ain’t all Southern, darlin’
Knoxville’s international flavors are aplenty and the back stories from many of these business owners will warm the heart long before the food warms the belly. 30

Take for instance Khan Sikarng, whose life story includes being an infant strapped to the back of her mother as they crossed the Mekong River to escape the chaos in Laos caused by the Vietnam War. Now the owner of Knoxville’s Sticky Rice Café, Sikarng’s business not only features the cuisine of her motherland but the dishes are prepared by her mother. And there’s Yassin Terou, a Syrian refugee who opened two restaurants, both named Yassin’s Falafel House. The restaurants are so loved in this community that they won the title of “Nicest Place in America,” in 2018 via a national contest sponsored by Reader’s Digest. Jesse Newmister is another chef who has brought two interesting eateries to the city. Kaizen is a Japanese-style pub where Newmister and staff serve house made Thai sausage, steamed buns and noodle dishes, while his Tako Taco eatery showcases a fusion of Asian and Hispanic flavors. Other international offerings include Gosh Ethiopian Restaurant, the Mediterranean eatery Kefi, Tandur Indian Kitchen, the Phillipine Connection, Quality Turkish Market, as well as a number of Cuban, Thai, Vietnamese, Hispanic and Chinese restaurants.
What’s Brewing
From pale ale and stouts to porters and lagers, Knoxville’s brewing community is flourishing. Happy Holler boasts a plethora of beer
makers including Elst Brewing Company, Elkmont Exchange, Fanatic Brewing, Crafty Bastard, and Schulz Bräu, just to name a few. To taste the best the city has to offer, give Knox Brew Tours a call. In addition to a great beer scene, Pretentious Beer is located in the Old City, and is also the home of Pretentious Glass Company, an artisan glass blowing operation that focuses on beer glasses designed to deliver various styles of beer onto the tongue for maximum flavor. Think Riedel except for beer. Knoxville also has two distilleries, PostModern Spirits and Knox Whiskey Works featured on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail.
As Seen on TV
Many of Knoxville’s eateries have been featured on HGTV’s Travel Channel and/or Food Network shows. Sweet P’s BBQ and Ye Olde Steakhouse, a restaurant that recently celebrated 50 years of operation, were featured on “Man vs. Food”. Guy Fieri brought national fame to the already locally-loved Pizza Palace and the Savory & Sweet Food Truck on his “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”. Welcome to Knoxville. Celebrating 100 Years with a Fair – thus the Tennessee Valley Fair was born. The Fair has played an unexpected role in local culture: 1910, East Tennesseans saw their first glimpse of an airplane in flight; 1950, Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy published his first known work for Catholic High’s newspaper reciting his adventures at the Fair; 1953, the Everly Brothers couldn’t pay their way in but met one of the Fair’s performers, legendary Chet Atkins. They were introduced through a fence and began their successful music career. Stories like these are
intertwined within the Fair’s centuryold history. For 100 years, the Fair has showcased traditions of the region’s past and emphasized the ingenuity of Tennesseans through agriculture, art, and trade. The Tennessee Valley Fair is a place to reminisce on the past while creating traditions for the future. Join Knoxville in Celebrating 100 Years of the Tennessee Valley Fair.

We look forward to it every year: The rides, the food, the livestock shows, the fireworks. The Tennessee Valley Fair, a 501(c)3 non-profit, is a place where people of different backgrounds have come together to experience a community event like none other for the past 100 years. In 1910, the Tennessee Valley Fair got its start as the Appalachian Exposition. Hundreds of thousands came to this event including former President Teddy Roosevelt. After a successful Exposition, locals decided to continue

Fans, some having arrived by way of the Three Rivers Rambler’s special steam excursions, are encouraged to interact with the barehanded ballists and cheer them on with hearty huzzahs! Free matches are held at Historic Ramsey House. 2614 Thorngrove Pike TennesseeVintageBaseBall.com On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the last state that could possibly ratify the 19th Amendment. The 72-year struggle for women to become enfranchised became a reality with Tennessee’s action which enshrined their right to vote in all elections in the U.S. Constitution. An anniversary celebration of the ratification will take place in Knoxville in 2020. Erected in 2018, this memorial statue by Nashville sculptor Alan LeQuire depicts Rep. Harry Burn of Niota and his mother, Febb, and honors each of their roles in the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Harry Burn served as a freshman representative in the Tennessee legislature in 1920, and on Aug. 18, Harry cast the deciding vote to approve the 19th Amendment. Tennessee became the 36th and last state needed to sign the amendment into law. Facebook.com/suffragecoalition

A “Prismatic City” Some know Knoxville as a college town, the Home of the Vols. It does host the region’s largest university and one of the nation’s largest football stadiums. But the city has multiple identities, almost independent of each other. It would be an oversimplification to call Knoxville a “college town.” Knoxville is an old and multifaceted place, with as many layers as a Market Square onion. Knoxville’s past tells the story not just of the South, or of Appalachia, but of America. What many don’t know is that Knoxville is one of the nation’s leaders in television production. Discovery Communications recently acquired Scripps Networks Interactive including HGTV and Food Network and now calls Knoxville home for its National Operations Headquarters. Jupiter Entertainment and Lusid Media are also located in Knoxville and produce many television shows for networks such as Oxygen, Investigation Discovery, TV One, and others. Many recall Knoxville as one of only a handful of American cities in living memory to have mounted a successful World’s Fair. Others are attracted to the city’s reputation for outdoor adventures in the nearby mountains or along the city’s own elaborate network of mountain-biking and hiking trails. Ijams Nature Center draws thousands to its striking array of outdoor attractions, but it got its start more than a century ago, as a private bird sanctuary. A little reading will reveal a unique and sometimes extraordinary history, of heroic early years beginning in 1791 when Knoxville was a territorial and state capital. Of a bitterly divided city during the Civil War, which saw a local climax here in a short but bloody battle. Of a brawny industrial city that produced 40

marble, iron, textiles, flour, furniture, and machinery for a national market. Of the dawn of conservation, and the birth of a national park. Of an often surprising cultural center that nurtured the South’s most durable symphony orchestra while also germinating some of the first nationally popular careers in country music—all the while breeding a motley array of internationally significant authors, including Frances Hodgson Burnett, James Agee, Nikki Giovanni--and Cormac McCarthy, who once aptly described his hometown as an “obscure and prismatic city.” Happy Holler, which may have been born the day an Irishman opened a saloon beside a troublesome ditch in the 1880s, is a lively attraction today. Other places like World’s Fair Park, the Old City, Suttree Landing, Sequoyah Hills, Fountain City and Lakeshore Park are unlike anywhere else in Knoxville, and in America. And they each have their own stories. To help both newcomers and locals get a handle on Knoxville, a new book offers some help. “Historic Knoxville: A Curious Visitor’s Guide to its Stories and Places”, includes descriptions, addresses, maps, illustrations, and short narratives that connect readers with what makes the city interesting, especially that which may not be obvious on first glance. From the rejuvenated downtown to UT’s Hill, everything active about the city today reflects its multilayered history. History may or may not be the reason you visit Knoxville, but when you’re here, you can’t avoid becoming part of it. Jack Neely Executive Director, Knoxville History Project
