Gaze

Stunning sky views.

As the day dawns and night falls, Lake County is in its glory. Here are some wonderful locations to see the sunrise and sunset and gaze at the stars.

Sunrise

Take a morning walk and stack some stones on Zion's Illinois Beach State Park. Watch the sunrise from the cliffs, the beach or Illinois Beach Hotel overlooking Lake Michigan. The views are just as spectacular north of the state park at North Point Marina with an extended dock, so you can go out on the serene waters of Lake Michigan while watching the sun rise.

The sunrise views are stunning at Waukegan Beach or Harbor, Rosewood Beach or the Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve.

Stargazing

Staring fondly into the eyes of a constellation is a wondrous sight, and there are many different locations to stargaze in Lake County.

Illinois Beach State Park is one of the most optimal locations for stargazing in the Chicagoland area. The Zion site offers unobstructed views away from the light pollution that the city expels. The best area in the state park to scan the sky is the campground, tucked away from the street lights and pitch black during nightfall.

You can see a brilliant glow in the sky if you're on a boat in the middle of the great lake. That glow is the Milky Way. The Bortle Scale reads a 2-3, which enables viewers to see

Sunset

Overlooking pristine Lake Zurich, Sunset Pavilion at Breezewald Park is a visual statement venue where you can enjoy the view, some snacks and libations. By boat, by land or by night hike, Chain O’Lakes State Park offers stunning views.

The dazzling oranges, blues, reds and purples at Fox Lake’s Lakefront Park is a magical sight. The panoramic views from Diamond Lake Beach are mesmerizing. If you sit on the Jones Island side or the west side of Grayslake, you can also view a pictureperfect sunset.

the complexity of the Milk Way, globular clusters, zodiacal light and so much more. If you have a boat on Waukegan Harbor or North Point Harbor, float away from the shore, and you'll see the show of a lifetime. The Ryerson Conservation Area is a perfect area to sky search. No lights, panoramic vegetation and a divine aesthetic to the sky, "let the cosmic ballet go on."
