STEP INTO THE WORLD OF CHRISTMAS PAST

Step into the world of Christmas past with Lancashire’s historic halls. Sparkling frost covered gardens, warming banqueting halls, decorated foyers and giant Christmas trees, all enhance the magical experience of the season.

Lancashire’s Yuletide connections

Did you know Lancashire also has its own Wassail Song? Thought to be an ancient custom from Lancashire, Wassailing involved toasting trees or crops with hot spiced ale or cider during the depths of midwinter or visiting houses singing and offering a drink to residents in exchange for a gift, usually on the twelfth night of Christmas.

That’s not the only festive connection to the county either, the first written mention of Santa Claus dates back to 1871, from a poem published in the Preston Guardian. The idea of Santa delivering presents to children dates back to around this time so it’s not a stretch to suggest that Santa became more prevalent in published pieces around the UK then too.

Throughout the years, Christmas has been celebrated in different ways. The Lancastrian’s of Tudor times would burn a large “Yule Log” for the twelve days of Christmas, believing that if it extinguished before the twelve days were up then the year ahead would bring bad luck. Friends and family would gather around the log and share stories and sup spiced porridge. Traditionally the men would gather the yule log while the women would fetch evergreen boughs and leaves to decorate windows and interiors; including holly, ivy, yew and bay leaves.

While the burning of logs hasn’t stood the test of time, the tradition of “flesh day” which saw the rural communities around towns like Poultonle-Fylde, Garstang and Ormskirk descend the towns on Christmas Eve to purchase the meat they needed for the festive period, has now transformed into the festive markets we see today.

Lancashire’s Historic Houses and Halls

There are so many great historic halls and houses in Lancashire, where you will find a warm welcome and plenty of Christmas sparkle.

Samlesbury Hall, nr Preston

Built in 1325, Samlesbury Hall is steeped in fascinating history, retaining its original typical black and white exterior. Visiting at Christmas will take your breath away, especially if you visit for their Christmas Ghost Story, The Forever House or their Christmas Fair.

Lytham Hall

A breathtaking Georgian Hall in the cosy seaside town of Lytham, which is going all out this Christmas time. The A Dickens of a Christmas event will take guests on a musical journey through magically decorated rooms.

Mitton Hall Hotel, Whalley

A beautiful 15th Century manor house, Mitton Hall hotel now hosts weddings and guests throughout the year. Groups of 6 can book in for festive private dining during December and bask in the magical decor, while enjoying a mouthwatering festive menu or a spectacular afternoon tea during the season.

Browsholme Hall, Clitheroe

Lancashire’s oldest historic family home settled in the heart of the Forest of Bowland. Browsholme Hall is open for pre-booked group bookings each Wednesday throughout the festive season, for groups to tour the home in its full festive glory.

Gawthorpe Hall, Burnley

An Elizabethan gem, Gawthorpe Hall tells the story of life in the Victorian era for the Kay-Shuttleworth Family. While mostly closed throughout the festive season you can see the Hall trimmed and decorated during its Victorian Christmas weekend on the 30th November and 1st December.

‘Fiendishly Good’ Chocolate Truffles

by Choc Amor

INGREDIENTS

• 70ml double cream

• 40g light muscovado sugar

• 25g unsalted butter softened

• Pinch of salt

• 110g dark chocolate

• Cocoa powder to dust

METHOD

1. Line a mini baking tray ( 15cm x 9cm ) with cling film so that it overhangs the sides slightly, or use a similar size foil tray.

2. In a small saucepan, heat the cream, sugar and butter over a gentle heat until it starts to boil. Turn down the heat and allow it to simmer for 1 minute. Ensure the sugar has completely dissolved. You can do this in a microwave but only in short 30 second bursts, stirring between each blast – 3 times should do it.

3. When everything has completely melted using either method, take the pan off the heat, add a pinch of salt and leave to cool for 5 minutes.

4. Break the chocolate into small pieces, put them in a heatproof bowl and melt slowly in a microwave, again only with 30 second blasts, or in a bowl set over hot water.

5. Combine the cooled cream mixture with the melted chocolate. Stir until smooth and glossy, but don’t overmix as it will split. Pour into your prepared baking tray and refrigerate until set: a minimum of 2 hours, but preferably overnight.

6. Remove the tray from the fridge and use the clingfilm to lift the set truffle mix onto a chopping board. Cut into 24 bite size pieces. Dust your fingertips with cocoa powder and gently roll the truffles in it, smoothing the edges and making sure each truffle is well coated. Don’t handle the truffles too much as they will melt.

7. Your truffles are now ready to eat. They will keep in the fridge for up to 7 days. Perfect for a Christmas treat.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP

By Road

The M6 runs right through Lancashire connecting to the M61, M65, M55 and several major A roads. In less than an hour’s drive from Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds you could be exploring the vast Pennine Fells, beautiful Ribble Valley or driving along the world famous Blackpool promenade.

By Water

If you’re lucky enough to travel by water then both the Lancaster canal and Leeds-Liverpool canal give you the chance to sail right into the heart of places like Lancaster, Garstang and Burnley, whilst you’ll also get amazing views of our stunning countryside and wildlife on route.

By Rail

Lancashire has excellent rail connections from all over the country – just two hours from London on the West Coast Line with Avanti West Coast with stations at Preston and Lancaster. Change at Preston to reach the towns of Clitheroe, Burnley, Blackburn, Colne and Ormskirk. There are also direct trains traveling from Manchester to most Lancashire towns and cities

By Air

Both Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport have frequent flights serving Europe and international airports including Beijing, Hong Kong and New York. Manchester Airport has direct trains to many Lancashire destinations every 30 minutes and it’s less than an hour’s drive from Manchester to Preston.

By Bike

Bring your bike to Lancashire (or hire one when you get here) and appreciate the variety of terrain and breath-taking views. You can pick up hire bikes from a number of railway stations including Morecambe, Blackburn, Preston and Ormskirk, all at reasonable prices. Leisure Lakes Bikes in Lancaster city centre has a range of hire bikes including electric and hybrid, and Blackpool hire scheme has comfortable yellow bikes from the Palatine Leisure Centre. See cyclelancashire. com for a full list of cycle hire venues.
