Lincoln - a rising star Lonely Planet’s Tom Hall recently named Lincoln as one of five hidden travel gems in the UK, saying: "Not so much hidden as far less wellknown than other celebrated cathedral cities, Lincoln has a wonderful maze of medieval streets, ancient city gates and old buildings giving it exactly the sort of atmosphere many visitors to the UK are looking for. The views from the castle are spectacular too." While Tom’s comments are very complimentary of the city, I wouldn’t necessarily agree that we are less known anymore. There was certainly a time when Lincoln hid its attributes under a bushel but those days are long gone. In a recent YouGov poll of 55,000 people, Lincoln was voted 14th most popular city in Britain, ahead of smaller cities like Exeter, Brighton, Norwich and Stirling and much bigger cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and London. The word on Lincoln is clearly out!

Cllr Ric Metcalfe Leader City of Lincoln Council

providing much needed additional parking spaces in the heart of the city. As well as improving the area of the city centre close to the train station and creating a more accessible and attractive gateway to the city, the Hub has helped pave the way for further significant investment that will increase the vibrancy and vitality of the city centre.

Elsewhere in Lincoln, we have recently invested £1.5million to transform Birchwood Leisure Centre, providing fantastic new facilities including a children’s soft play area, climbing walls and state-ofthe-art spin studio. And the newly improved and restored Boultham Park provides a fantastic, familyfriendly day out.

There are many reasons why Lincoln is more on the map now than ever before. The success of the football club has certainly helped, with last year’s superb F.A Cup run, promotion to the football league and Checkatrade Trophy success. Indeed, every time home games were shown on TV visits to the Visit Lincoln website rocketed as the Lincoln skyline appeared behind shots of Sincil Bank. In addition to this, in the last year alone, the city has won national online polls for best Cathedral, best Castle and best Christmas Market. The work undertaken by Visit Lincoln has placed the city firmly in the spotlight and the city’s two universities continue to climb league tables and the University of Lincoln has continued its expansion with approval for a medical school which will undoubtedly draw in students from across the globe and help spread the Lincoln name far and wide. Lincoln itself is also transforming, with significant investment taking place across the whole of the city. Over the past year alone, we have opened the £30million Transport Hub, improving its connectivity with the surrounding area and

months, including an Everyman Cinema which will provide the city with a boutique cinema experience where film fans will be able to enjoy the latest blockbusters as well as classic and cult movies from the comfort of settees arranged in rows with side tables for drinks and snacks.

Lincoln is also nationally and internationally recognised for much of its cultural offer. A couple of months ago the Steampunk Festival took place in the uphill area and visitors came from far and wide. Some people had come from San Francisco especially for it, which is fantastic news for the city.

Lincoln’s historic Cornhill Quarter, close to the Hub, is currently undergoing a multi-million pound revamp that will expand Lincoln’s contemporary offer, alongside the vibrant historic city, to produce a full range of visitor experiences. The eccentric Cosy Club restaurant is already open, along with the innovative Danish home and general store, Flying Tiger Copenhagen, and men’s formal wear fashion brand, Moss Bros. Many more exciting businesses are due to open over the coming

3

Of course, the jewel in the crown for the city’s cultural offer remains Lincoln Christmas Market. It attracts more than 250,000 people into the city every year and we have already allocated of all this year’s 200 stalls to local, national and international traders - all of who are coming to the city to supply the festive cheer in abundance! Set against the historic backdrop of Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the city’s famous cobblestone streets it really is hard to beat. With so many new things to see and do, and the recognition the city is receiving, it’s a great time to visit Lincoln (or revisit if you haven’t been for a while) and see what makes us truly unique.

Co-owner Rachel Bishop added: “Eagle-eyed readers may have spotted a slight name change to the guide, from Visit Lincoln to Hello Lincoln and that is to ensure the magazine is aimed at everyone that lives, works and studies in the city, not just tourists. “Our collaboration with all our partners is what makes the What’s On Guide such an asset in promoting Lincoln.” Chief executive of Visit Lincoln Lydia Rusling said the Guide had become a useful tool in its marketing of the city: “We regard the magazine as a great success, demonstrating what can be achieved when we work in partnership.” Observant readers may have also spotted our fabulously colourful front cover before as it is hanging in the outpatient department of Lincoln County Hospital.

Enjoy the birthday celebration thrills

Lincoln Performing Arts Centre

What a momentous year! Lincoln Performing Arts Centre turned 10 in January and to mark this important milestone it has been staging an ambitious anniversary programme. Artistic Director Craig Morrow explained the reaction to celebrations so far and what’s in store for the rest of the year. “We’ve been blown away by the response to our birthday programme, from community residencies through to high-profile events, the feedback has been great.” One particular highlight was the Luminarium, which created a buzz throughout the city. “ That was definitely a high-point it was unbelievably popular with over 4,000 people visiting in just four days, so much so we’re looking to bring it back next Easter.”

The centre’s festivities are far from over as Craig described events planned for autumn. “We start with PopOut Festival, which kicks off with some large-scale street circus on September 29-30 on Lincoln High Street and also features the return of the Roundabout pop-up-theatre, a gig/play at Home nightclub, a concert in a car park and a séance experience in a shipping container. “It’s a thrilling series of activities - PopOut is always an eclectic explosion of events, but we’ve definitely raised the bar this year. And we’re carrying that adventurous spirit through to our main programme and then on into Christmas.” In line with that spirit Lincoln Performing Arts Centre will have two Christmas shows. “We’ve got two shows, our big production for ages six plus is Rapunzel (December 12-24), a musical adaptation of the Brothers Grimm story, complete with shadow puppetry and far too much hair. “Then we’ve our studio show for younger audiences

We’re working with the same creative team as the last two years, so expect charming characters, silly songs and fun audience interaction. Penguins! runs right up until New Year’s Eve so it will be a perfect way to round off what’s been an amazing year. Here’s to 2019.”

City’s fun-filled family Christmas

visitlincoln.com/christmas

Welcome to Christmas in Lincoln

Christmas

Treat your family and friends to their best-ever Christmas present by taking them along to Lincoln’s fantastic festive attractions. The secret’s out! Lincoln has it all - from sparkling lights to fabulous shopping, a world-famous market and pantomime laughs galore. Reindeer even travel from Scotland to be part of the action! “We promise everyone, from local families to thousands of seasonal visitors, a wonderful time and we’d hate anyone to miss out. That’s why we also welcome people to stay with us overnight or for a short break,” said Visit Lincoln Chief Executive Lydia Rusling. “Lincoln offers a warm and friendly welcome yearround. Our amazing crowd-pulling events create great memories and at Christmastime we really push the boat out! “We set the festive scene early with a traditional Christmas Lights switch-on, which always has a celebrity element. This year’s takes place on November 23. After that it’s non-stop until the ‘big day’. “Children will have the chance to meet reindeer from the Cairngorms and see them in a special reindeer parade and, if it’s a cold evening they will able to warmup with a hot chocolate in Thor’s Tipi - a Scandinavian-style installation which will be on The Cornhill from November 9 to December 31.) “Our unique blend of historic and modern attractions provide the perfect backdrop for a brilliant mix of shopping. An amazing variety of national retailers and quirky independent shops make it easy, and fun, to track down that special gift.

“Once again, our World-famous Lincoln Christmas Market (December 6 to 9) promises to deliver a magical experience for new and returning visitors from at home and overseas - there will be other markets taking place in the city too. “Pantomimes are another essential element of the festive season and a must for anyone who wants to stretch the holiday-time fun into the New Year. This year’s include Peter Pan at Lincoln Drill Hall (December 6 to January 5) and Snow White at Lincoln’s New Theatre Royal (December 4 to January 6) with Lincoln Performing Arts Centre offering two shows Rapunzel (December 12-24) and Penguins! Penguins! Penguins! (December 17-31). “This is just a flavour of what families can enjoy in Lincoln this Christmas.”

Lincoln Castle Emporium

Emporium magic will light up Chrismas

If you are looking for a truly charming and unique experience in those special days before Christmas then Lincoln Castle’s Christmas Emporium is a must on your to-do list. The Christmas Emporium will run for eight evenings nestled within the stunning medieval walls of the Castle offering visitors an opportunity to experience a unique combination of quality shopping, fabulous food and drink, and an extraordinary lumiére showcase. Join friends and family to stroll amongst the fir trees and visit the handpicked selection of artisan traders and makers in their log cabins - all with their unique take on Christmas gifting. Foodies will be delighted to find locally sourced treats from award winning producers such as Pin Gin, The Naked Marsh Mallow Company and Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese. Those looking for distinctive one off present ideas will not be disappointed either, as the Emporium welcomes some of the finest independent crafters and artists in the area such as Zoo Ceramics, creators of wonderful sculptural ceramics inspired by nature; and Vagrant Art, makers of beautiful jewellery and wearable pieces made from repurposed and recycled materials. The full line up of vendors will be revealed shortly. Take a moment to pause from the shopping, and visitors will be enthralled by the entertainment at the heart of the Christmas Emporium, as a stunning light and sound projection whirs to life and transforms the Castle grounds into a magical moving vista. Entitled ‘Marking Time’ this spectacular light show is inspired by the movement of Victorian timepieces and takes creative references from ‘A Visit from St Nicholas’ as well as ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’. Lasting ten minutes (and repeated every half an hour throughout each evening) this mesmerising illumination is sure to stop visitors young and old in their tracks! This memorable twilight experience also features the best in winter ‘pop up’ style dining. The focal point being a cosy tipi bar providing the hygge a plenty - real log fires burning brightly, with twinkling fairy lights overhead, and glorious tasty treats such as mulled wine and hot chocolate. A selection of

quality street food vendors completes the dining experience - offering a delicious variety of food and drink options. Kim Vickers is the General Manager at Lincoln Castle and has been instrumental in bringing this brand-new event to the city. She comments, “Having seen the centrepiece illumination show for the event, I can’t tell you how excited I am for our visitors to see this come to life. The projection is simply magical, and I’m very proud that the Castle will be home to this stunning display. We wanted to bring a new type of event to Lincoln this Christmas time - one that combines elements of great shopping, eating and drinking with friends and family, and of course the entertainment of the light spectacular. We have the perfect setting here, the atmosphere in the Castle at Christmas is wonderful, and we hope to share that with visitors old and new, as they celebrate Christmas in style.” Tickets to the Christmas Emporium can be purchased from www.lincolncastle.com and will allow return visits throughout the entire eight days of the event. Ticket holders may also choose to combine a visit to the Emporium with a meander through the cobbled streets of Uphill Lincoln, brimming with festive charm at this special time of the year. In addition, tickets include access to Lincoln Castle’s Medieval Wall Walk whilst the Emporium is open - a rare experience not to be missed at night time as the city lights provide the most stunning views over historic Lincoln. The Christmas Emporium at Lincoln Castle runs from Saturday, December 15 to Saturday, December 22, 4pm to 10pm (light display from 5pm to 9pm, every 30 minutes). Adults £7.50, concessions £6, Children £5 (under 5s free), family ticket £20 (two adults and up to three children), annual pass holders - free entry. Tickets include return entry throughout the Emporium. 28

For the very first time Lincoln Castle will be opening its gates for the magical Christmas Emporium and groups have the opportunity to enjoy a completely unique festive experience alongside it. A Christmas party at Lincoln Castle is the ideal way to have a seasonal catch up with friends or to celebrate a year of hard work with employees, customers or contractors, in an unparalleled location. Ellen Kelman, Corporate Hospitality Officer said: “December is all about celebrating and what better place to do that than in the midst of our highly anticipated Christmas Emporium? We know how important this time of year is for people so we’ve worked hard to create a unique experience for Lincoln, and we truly believe that joining us for an exclusive evening provides the perfect setting to delight friends and colleagues alike.”

Get close up to a Dickens’ classic

Lincoln Castle

As the father of a young family who enjoyed the festivities of the Christmas period, he thought about writing something which opened hearts and minds to those worse off than themselves. Later that year, in October 1843, Dickens gave a talk in Manchester, during which he saw first-hand further distressing sites and suffering associated with working class life in industrial Britain. Less than a month after his Manchester visit he began writing the tale. The story reflects the hardship of the 1840s for those that were not prosperous and in particular

By Andrea Martin Exhibitions and Interpretation Manager, Lincolnshire County Council's Heritage Service

If ever a story was to get you in the mood for Christmas then it has to be Charles Dickens’ much loved classic, ‘A Christmas Carol’. This Christmas, an original copy of this most iconic of Christmas works will be displayed at Lincoln Castle as part of the Christmas Emporium.

Through a loan between Lincolnshire County Council’s Heritage Service and The British Library a first edition of A Christmas Carol will be exhibited for all to enjoy as part of Lincoln’s festivities. A Christmas Carol institutionalised what one could call the modern ‘spirit of Christmas’. Dicken’s most famous of works was subtitled ‘A Ghost Story for Christmas’ and the Christmas Spirit seen in the first edition of the book draws itself directly from pagan iconography. During the Victorian era many Christmas traditions which we continue to hold today were initiated, many attributed to the influence of Prince Albert -

the newly installed husband of Queen Victoria. For example, it was Prince Albert, who brought the Christmas from his native Germany the Christmas Tree. Meanwhile, in 1843, Dickens was horrified by reading a Government issued report on the Employment of Women and Children, which brought to light the appalling conditions and long hours under which very young children were made to work in factories. Dickens described himself as being ‘perfectly stricken down by it’ and vowed to strike, ‘the heaviest blow in my power’, ‘something that would come down with sledgehammer force’ on behalf of victims of the Industrial Revolution.

31

children who were cheap labour working amongst the dangers of the rise of the new machinery in this industrial age, the Tiny Tims of A Christmas Carol. The first edition soon shot off the shelves before Christmas 1843. This year, 2018 marks the 175th anniversary of the release of this enduring tale. Now is your chance to see this first edition copy up close in the David P.J. Ross Magna Carta Vault from November through to January. www.lincolncastle.com, email lincoln_castle.gov.uk, 01522 554559.

Lincoln Christmas Market 2 bigger and better than eve Back again for its 36th year and bigger and better than ever, Lincoln Christmas Market has come a long way since the first event in 1982 with just 12 stalls in Castle Square. In recent years the market has grown to over 200 stalls, welcomed around 250,000 visitors from all over the world into the city over the four days of the event, and providing a £12 million boost to the local tourist economy. People come from far and wide to experience one of the world’s most authentic Christmas Markets, set against the historic backdrop of Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the city’s famous cobblestone streets. Lincoln was the first traditional-style Christmas Market in the UK and borrows its unique styling from Bavarian Christmas Markets in Germany, after a suggestion from representatives of Lincoln’s twin city in Germany Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. Claire McDowall, Principle Events and Culture Officer with the City of Lincoln Council, which organises and runs the Market said: “After the disappointment of having to close a day early last year we cannot wait to get going again and make this year’s Lincoln Christmas Market the best one ever! “There’s something for everyone at this year’s event; whether you are looking for a unique Christmas gift that you just can’t find anywhere else, or if you would like to try fantastic food and drinks from all over the world

32

you’ll be more than happy at Lincoln Christmas Marke “We’re very proud of how our market has grown over years and become the highlight of Lincoln’s cultural calendar. “Many towns and cities have since gone on to try and copy the Lincoln Christmas Market, but ours was the fi and ours is still the best!” Don’t just take our word for it though, the Christmas Market has been honoured with many awards over the years, and is regularly named as one of the best Christmas markets in Europe. Each year we welcome visitors from as far afield as the United States, Australi and China. The market is now so large that it takes up most of uph Lincoln and this can make it difficult to find parking clo to the event. With this in mind, it is recommended that anyone driving to the market uses the market’s Park a Ride located at The Lincolnshire Showground. Make sure you pick up your souvenir Christmas Marke map from the Visitor Information Centre and business in the area. This year’s Lincoln Christmas Market is taking place between Thursday 6 December and Sunday 9 Decemb and is totally free to enter. Food & Drink

Food & Drink

Make local cheese a festive favourite Food and Drink

No Christmas Day is complete without the classic cheeseboard. Served alongside coffee and truffles, it’s the perfect way to finish a fabulous festive celebration. After you’ve gorged on chocolate, stuffed yourself with turkey and maybe had a bit of a nap, a cheeseboard is perfect for when you’re just starting to feel that little bit peckish again. From nutty flavours to smooth textures, there’s no better place to look for excellent cheese than Lincolnshire and you can send guests away impressed with what our county has to offer. There’s plenty of quality cheese in Lincolnshire Co-op’s Love Local range. Not only is it delicious but you’ll be helping to grow the local economy and supporting smaller producers. Start your board with Lymn Bank Cheese produced by the Grinstead family in Thorpe St Peter near Skegness. Their mature Just Jane cheese has a strong flavour with a soft texture and has been matured for two years. Add to the list Cote Hill blue, red and yellow. The milk comes from the Davenport’s herd of Freesian cattle in Osgodby near Market Rasen. The family create some wonderful flavours from creamy and salty in their Cote Hill Blue to nutty in their Cote Hill Red. Enhance your collection with Lincolnshire Poacher cheese. It’s matured for about 14 to 16 months and is packed with lots of strong flavours. Every batch is taste tested and each is different depending on everything from the weather to how the cow is feeling – usually stress-free thanks to an automatic cow massager! Finally, complete your cheeseboard with Just Like Your Grannies chutney. It’s created by self-confessed mad inventor David Esberger from Lincoln. A fiery and fruity flavour that perfectly complements cheese, biscuits and crackers. And if you have any cheese leftover, there’s ample time to use it in the festive holidays. You can add both Cote Hill Red and Lymn Bank Just Jane cheese to leftover Brussels Sprouts (see top recipe opposite page) for a delightful twist on mac and cheese. Friday 5 October

Family What’s the deal with parking in Lincoln?

www.lincoln.gov.uk/parking

Are you thinking of taking a trip into Lincoln? If so, you may want to plan your parking in advance to ensure you get the best space at the best price. We have the low-down on your parking queries to make your journey to the city as easy and budget friendly as possible…

Where to park? Across Lincoln, the car parks are identified against Commuter, Shopper and Visitor tariffs to ensure you are getting the most for your money. If you are coming to the city for the day, the best tariff gives you 24 hours parking from when you arrive. Shopper car parks are priced at £8 for 24 hours and Visitor car parks are priced at £8.50 for 24 hours. If you are happy to travel a little bit further away from the main shopping area and attractions, the likes of Broadgate (LN2 5AP) and Chaplin Street (LN5 7BN) are priced at just £5 for 24 hours on the Commuter tariff. However, if you are planning to make a day of it, Lincoln Central Car Park (LN5 7BP) on the Shopper tariff is ideally situated for you to get to your city centre destination in plenty of time. The car park boasts 1,000 extra wide spaces, twelve electric hook-up points and you can pay on foot, meaning you don’t have to guess how long you’re going to be out and about for when you park up! Alternatively, there are many other car parks which are spread out across different areas of the city such as Lucy Tower Street (Shopper, LN1 1XL) on the Brayford, The Lawn (Visitor, LN1 3BU) for uphill access and Tentercroft Street (Shopper, LN5 7DB) for access to the lower High Street. At the weekend, the following car parks offer 24hrs parking for just £3.30 – Broadgate, County Offices, Rosemary Lane and Waterside North.

Plan ahead Planning for Christmas shopping is already well underway, which means you need to make the most of the early bird specials on Lincoln High Street. Choose your car park before you set off, so that you can add the postcode of your desired car park to the satnav without getting in a muddle (or even worse, head to the wrong car park) before your day of sights and shopping! To avoid getting caught in a sea of scarves and bobble hats on your trip back to the car, you are best off choosing the car park closest to your final shopping destination. You don’t want to be carrying bags of shopping halfway across the city.

Winter parking deals As part of the council’s mission to help you with affordable parking in the city, they have provided a list of dates for FREE parking in the city centre over the Christmas period. These car parking freebies will be available on the below dates from 4pm – 9:30pm at Lincoln Central Car Park and other car parks which are soon to be confirmed – keep an eye on local media for the announcement. Please see the calendar below to make use of this offer:

Friday 23 November – Christmas Lights Switch On Thursday 29 November – Late Night Shopping/Reindeer Parade Thursday 6 December – Late Night Shopping Thursday 13 December – Late Night Shopping Thursday 20 December – Late Night Shopping Friday 21 December – Late Night Shopping Saturday 22 December – Late Night Shopping To find out the precise locations of all of the city council’s car parks, go online at www.lincoln.gov.uk/parking

10 Reasons to Visit Lincoln

www.lincoln.gov.uk

Getting out and about in Lincoln can mean visiting historic sites such as Lincoln Castle, shopping in the city centre (right), taking part in the Lincoln 10K (below left) or following the recent success of Lincoln City FC (below right).

What’s so special about

This year, we saw a record-breaking year for tourism in Lincoln which begs the question, what makes Lincoln different from its UK neighbours? Here are the top 10 reasons to visit Lincoln. Heritage and history There is no denying that Lincoln is rich in history, tracing back as far as 300BC, which can be seen in various nooks and crannies around the city. As evening strikes, the historic cathedral basks in a glowing light at the top of the hill where it once stood as the tallest building in the world! The ancient walls of Lincoln Castle provide an unbeatable view of the city and, of course, it is also home to one of only four surviving copies of the Magna Carta in the world. One of the fastest growing universities in the country Since the University of Lincoln Brayford Campus was opened in 1996, it has quickly established a

reputation as of one of the most dynamic and fastest growing universities in the country. The university is ranked 22nd overall in the UK in The Guardian University Guide 2019 and is a top 50 UK university in the Complete University Guide 2019. It’s changed the face of Lincoln for the better and, along with the fantastic facilities at Bishop Grosseteste University, it’s no wonder that thousands of students flock to the city from across the world to complete their education - and bring their family and friends to visit too! It’s within easy reach Coming by car is quicker than ever before thanks to the A1 and A46 connecting the city to the midlands, and the M180 connecting to the A15 in the north. There are train services running directly to and from major UK cities including Nottingham, Leicester, Peterborough, Sheffield, Leeds and a government commitment for additional trains to and from London. There is also a number of bus services

running to and from Lincoln Central Bus Station and neighbouring towns and villages.

The Lincolnites love to eat They say the way to the heart is through the stomach, so it’s just as well that Lincolnshire is the home county of the famous Lincolnshire sausage, Lincolnshire plum bread and Lincolnshire haslet. Lincoln’s residents take their food very seriously, which is why amidst the impressive restaurants, quaint tea rooms and delicious street food, there is also an annual sausage festival that takes place every October. Famous events Talking of events, Lincoln is home to one of the biggest in the UK. Lincoln Christmas Market allows the city to take a trip back in time along the cobbled streets of uphill Lincoln for a truly festive experience. It’s hard to believe that it began in 1982 with just 11 stalls and now takes over most of Lincoln’s cultural

quarter with more than 200 stalls. As well as Lincoln Christmas Market, the city hosts an array of specialist events throughout the year including the 1940s Weekend, Lincoln 10K, the Lincoln Grand Prix cycling event and the internationally known Asylum Steampunk Festival. There are also shows and concerts at venues across the city which include The Engine Shed, New Theatre Royal, Lincoln Performing Arts Centre and Lincoln Drill Hall. It’s great for kids Lincoln is a great place to bring your kids as there is so much on offer for the whole family. There are activity days for children at the local parks (Boultham, Hartsholme and the Arboretum) throughout the year, providing a great opportunity to pack a picnic and enjoy the fun amidst nature! Lincoln Castle and Cathedral also host childfriendly events, whilst Birchwood Leisure Centre, featuring a new climbing wall and soft play area, is located within easy reach of the city centre for your

children to let off some steam. It’s accessible for everyone A lot of Lincoln’s attractions, accommodation and eateries offer accessible visits in the city - just ask to see the venue’s Access Statement so you can plan your visit ahead of arrival! Lincoln Central Bus Station is home to one of Lincoln’s first Changing Places facility, providing a safe changing space for those who need it on the move. You can shop ‘til you drop Whether you’re looking for a one-off designer sweater from the vintage shop or a High Street splurge, Lincoln is home to some well-known chains and independent shops alike. The further up Steep Hill you venture, the more character you will find in the items for sale. Why not visit one of the wine, cheese or craft shops for an extra-special gift? What’s more, the bustling

Lincoln’s Brayford area is busy by day and night as it is home to bars, restaurants and venues such as Lincoln Performing Arts Centre and the Engine Shed (insert).

51

Lincoln Central Market is conveniently located in the centre of town for some exceptional bargains. An impressive nightlife Lincoln is home to a buzzing nightlife, making it a difficult choice between the bars and nightclubs in the city centre - there is even a cocktail bar hidden behind the entrance of a TV repair shop - if you know where to look. It’s a beautiful place Whether you’re greeted by LincolnCathedral on your drive into the city on a cold winter’s night or enjoying a Ben and Jerry’s on the Brayford waterfront in the midst of a heatwave, Lincoln’s beauty is unmissable and it’s no wonder that people visit again and again. Why not see for yourself and visit Lincoln today. www.visitlincoln.com

Lincoln UTC connecting the classoom to the workplace

Lincoln University Technical College

If part of the role of education is to prepare children for life, why do so many schools fail to connect the classroom to the workplace? Surely, if we want young people to have the best chance of securing employment after they finish their studies, whether that be at GCSE, A Level, BTEC or degree level, they need to follow a curriculum that provides them with the skills they need to succeed. One school with an employer-focused curriculum is Lincoln University Technical College (UTC), the county’s specialist science, technology, engineering and mathematics school. Lincoln UTC helps students gain the qualifications, knowledge and skills that employers are calling out for. As a founding partner, the University of Lincoln has also influenced the courses offered by Lincoln UTC and the environment in which they are delivered.

“When people step through our front door, they immediately sense that we’re different,” says principal John Morrison. “It’s a calm environment. We don’t have a school bell to marshal students. We don’t have a school uniform; everyone wears business attire, just like any other workplace. “We provide similar courses to other schools but specialise in STEM subjects. We enhance our students’ learning through a range of challenging projects, involving our industry partners and focusing on real-world scenarios. Our work experience programme and extra-curricular activities reinforce the curriculum and give our students the best chance of progression whether that be into a job, an apprenticeship, A Levels or University. We want them to achieve their full potential.” “Unlike other schools, who have to follow the local authority’s application process, people can apply directly to us throughout the year. Yes, we have a programme of open evenings, just like other schools, but we also accommodate people who want a personal guided tour at a time to suit them,” concludes John. “It’s just another way in which we’re that little bit different.” To find out more about Lincoln UTC visit www.lincolnutc.co.uk, call 01522 775990 or attend one of its open evenings, the dates of which can be found in the Learning & Culture section.

Plenty to enjoy on university campus

University of Lincoln

One of the world’s great small cities, Lincoln is a melting pot of history and modern living, from the spectacular Lincoln Cathedral to the buzzing Brayford waterfront, which is home to the University of Lincoln’s inspiring campus. With a fusion of state-of-the-art academic facilities and thoughtfully renovated historic buildings, the University has won a string of awards for its campus investments, which have totalled £300 million. The campus’ welcoming environment is peppered with cafes and eateries. Visitors can enjoy a stroll along the Brayford Pool, and take in views of the waterfront, castle and Cathedral, and meet the local waterfowl which waddle along the pathways snaking through the waterside area. The friendly campus is open to the public year round - and there is plenty to make a visit worthwhile. The University’s Great Lives series, which gives an insight into the achievements of leading influential figures and recognisable faces from backgrounds such as the arts, business and economics, politics, health and science will begin again in the Autumn. In October 2018, the University of Lincoln will host a free-to-attend public lecture by naturalist, TV presenter and Visiting Professor of the University, Chris Packham. Chris will explore the wild side of Halloween in a public talk, offering a fascinating insight into owls and bats. In November, the University will hold its free-to-attend showcase of future technologies, Future 2.0, which will bring together exciting research projects from academics and students from the schools of Engineering, Computer Science, Design and Media Production. Another attraction on campus is the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre (LPAC), a fully-fledged theatre which offers everything from comedy, family shows and classical music, to contemporary performances and shows from professional

companies. The venue, which celebrates its ten year anniversary this year, also boasts the vibrant Zing Café which hosts jazz nights and free creative play sessions for children. Right alongside the LPAC is the Engine Shed, the largest live music and entertainments venue in Lincoln, where some of the biggest and best artists working in the entertainment industry have performed. Whether you are interested in viewing the modern architecture, enjoying a drink and bite to eat in one of the many cafes and eateries, or taking in a show, the University of Lincoln will be happy to welcome you to it’s campus. Find out what’s on at the University of Lincoln at www.lincoln.ac.uk/events or, if you’re interested in exploring study options too, book onto an Open Day at www.lincoln.ac.uk/opendays.

Tree-cycle with St Barnabas Free.

St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice will be running its Christmas Tree-cycle again following its most successful scheme to date as it raised £10,000 in January. This is more than twice the £4,800 raised in 2017 and Laura Stones, Event Fundraiser for St Barnabas Hospice, said: “The amount of money raised this year is just phenomenal, and the support from our local community is second to none. This is the third year we have run this service, and demand has multiplied by seven.” This year the scheme, which sees St Barnabas collect trees for a donation, will be run across the weekend of January 12-13 with full details to be released mid-November on www.stbarnabashospice.co.uk. Amelia Mochan, Event Fundraiser for St Barnabas is pictured (right) helping during the last collection: “The money raised from this service will help the Hospice to continue caring for adults living with a life-limiting illness and their family and carers across Lincolnshire. “We hope to raise even more money to support our care, as well as expanding our post code reach further across the county.”

Christmas refuse collections

This year Christmas Day falls on a Tuesday and all collections due on this day will be moved back to the previous Saturday 22 December. Boxing Day falls on a Wednesday, so its collections will be moved forward to the following Saturday - 29 December. New Year’s Day will be a normal collection.
