Cherish city’s artscape On hearing the words ‘arts’ and ‘culture’ I used to run a mile.

The provision for arts in schools is under severe pressure and now cuts in public spending mean that the availability of Arts and Culture in our city is seriously at risk. It is a sad truth that Arts and Culture do not come cheap. The costs of the original piece, the artists and technicians and all those who work to give a whole experience all deserve their pay and the simple truth is that if all those costs were to be met in the price of a ticket those tickets would be beyond the reach of all but a few. So, what is to be done? The wonderful offering of Arts and Culture that is set out in this guide is at risk. Everyone can help, first by buying tickets, but then in supporting the fundraising efforts of the different venues; it won’t solve the problem, but it will go some of the way. An initiative, in which I am much involved, is in exploring ways in which the venues can work together to ensure there is something for everyone, to make information available simply and in one place (thank you to the publishers of this magazine) and to avoid unnecessary duplication of costs. We also need to remember the arts are not just about entertainment they also enhance the economic landscape of a city. For example research carried out for the Drill Hall showed that £1 invested by the City of Lincoln Council generated £8 for the city’s economy. Those visiting the Drill Hall for an event spend, on average, an additional £30 in the city – on parking, eating out and shopping. It will be a similar story for the other venues.

Phil Hamlyn Williams Biographer Chair of Lincoln Arts Trust Chair of Trustees of Lincoln Book Festival

It was something other people did and anyway I wouldn’t understand it. I was an accountant, for goodness sake. That was then - now I can hardly believe that I ever thought like that. My eyes and ears have been opened and really all by chance. Over 20 years ago now I had been given the job as Secretary to the Diocese of Lincoln and found to my horror that I had to be able to communicate. I panicked and searched round for help and found a correspondence course in Creative Writing. I have never looked back. I went on to take a degree in Humanities encompassing Art and Architecture as well as history and all kinds of writing. I discovered the joy of culture. I still don’t like the word, but I now know how it feels. Looking at a painting, listening to a piece of music, experiencing drama, being entranced by a musical, laughing myself silly at pantomime – all these feed the soul. They take us out of ourselves, they give us wider horizons and enable us to grow. It’s not just my story; art is for everyone and it’s not all serious stuff. I will never forget the feeling at the end of The World at Her Feet or when I introduced the BBC Proms from the Drill Hall, or singing along to Michael Morpurgo – I am tingling as I write. I love the way my eyes are opened by a well curated exhibition of paintings but also laughing until my sides ache from great comedy. I am indeed one of the lucky ones. Tragically, the same may not be true for our children or grandchildren.

What truly matters is that future generations can grow in confidence and creativity by enjoyment of Arts and Culture in the place where they live.

Thinking about starting a new career in counselling? NW Counselling Hub CIC (NWCH) provides the training you’ll need to become an integrative counsellor. We offer levels 2-5 in counselling skills from within a safe, ethical, moral, empowering and empathic environment. NWCH is based in Lincoln and has a central hub to support children, young people, adults, families and couples within Lincolnshire with 1-2-1 counselling services.

Congratulations to Ashton Hinton - the creator of the front cover for the fifth edition of the Hello Lincoln What’s On Guide. The talented University of Lincoln student is pictured at the Hold The Front Page Exhibition at The Collection to choose the front cover from 44 other pieces of art from her Illustration degree course colleagues (see page 47). Ashton was delighted by her win: “People have been kind and congratulating me. I just love Lincoln and I’m very honoured that my artwork has been chosen to represent a part of Lincoln on the Hello Lincoln magazine” The What’s On guide is designed to enable residents and visitors alike to get the most out of our beautiful city. The 64-page magazine is published by the same team that produces the Bailgate Independent each month, which has printed 25,000 copies that have been delivered in and around Lincoln. “The Hello Lincoln What’s On Guide has become part of the cultural landscape with its easy-to-follow format and exhaustive listings. The distinctive front cover is one of the reasons why it has become so popular and readers eagerly await the next edition,” said co-owner Rachel Bishop. “Our theme was The Circus Comes to Lincoln to reflect many of the events over the city this year and Ashton’s detailed image catures that perfectly.” Along with the usual mix of entertainment, family fun, heritage events and ideas for days out, two new sections have been added - Sport and Health and Well-being, which the publishers are looking forward to see grow in future editions. “These are two important facets of community life in Lincoln and we wanted to make sure they were represented. If you have a club, group or organisation involved in these sectors - or any other, please use the details on page 5 to get in touch,” said Editor Amanda McSorley.

2019 follows in the wake of Lincoln Performing Arts Centre’s tenth anniversary year. However, rather than be a hard act to follow, if anything, this year is proving to be a continuation of that momentum and a fine-tuning of the vibrant, exciting and sometimes unexpected artistic programme of events. One of the most notable highlights carried forward is the return of the Luminarium, an extraordinary inflatable sculpture of light created by Architects of Air. This immersive art installation – which many compare to being like a cathedral of light or exploring the inside of an alien spacecraft – was experienced by over four thousand people in just four days when it last came to Lincoln. This year a brand new luminarium, Quodlumin will bring an equally mesmerising yet unique sculptural experience when it is inflated on the Rotunda at the University of Lincoln for a whopping five days from Wednesday to Sunday, April 10-14. Artistic Director, Craig Morrow describes this season as being built around the theme of possibilities: “Of where we are, where we’ve come from and where we’re going.” Status, written by renowned theatre maker Chris Thorpe certainly embodies the spirit of this theme. This critically acclaimed theatre production, which tours to LPAC on Thursday,March 28, 7.30pm follows the journey of a man who wishes to shirk his national identity. In our current political climate this show couldn’t feel more topical. This is more than simply ‘theatre to make you think’, although it will certainly satisfy the old grey matter. “The words are eloquent, the music essential and powerful, and the performance full of a brilliant, prowling precision.” (Scotsman). A glance through the full programme of events reveals the breadth and variety of entertainment on offer in this theatre at the heart of the city. From Horrible Histories to stand-up comic Ardal O’Hanlon, and from Vienna Festival Ballet’s Coppélia to Over The Moon, a first opera for babies (yes, really) there really is something for everyone. Lincoln Performing Arts Centre is situated on the Brayford Campus at the University of Lincoln. For further information contact the Box Office: www.lpac.co.uk // 01522 837600

Keep supporting the New Theatre Royal

New Theatre Royal Lincoln

one of the few remaining Victorian traditional Proscenium Arch theatres of midscale size. The New Theatre Royal family work tirelessly to keep one of Lincoln’s most-treasured gems alive. Natalie Hayes-Cowley, Artistic Director and Producer at the New Theatre Royal explained: “We have welcomed over 160,000 visitors since we opened on the 5th September 2016 and we want the theatre to continue to grow and be enjoyed by all now and in the future. Producing in-house shows, live streaming with the Royal Opera House, film screenings, theatre hires including weddings, and not forgetting our Stage Door Prosecco Bar & Bistro, all help to keep the theatre open.” “The ongoing maintenance and repairs to the building is a huge challenge, and the small revenues generated by touring shows only cover 40% of the theatre’s running costs. With all the profits from the in-house productions going back into the theatre, it is essential that we receive support for these shows.” Emma Olivier-Townrow, Business Development Manager added: “When you look at the history over the past 125 years it is the local people and business communities that have directly supported the theatre, through purchasing tickets, buying raffle tickets, loyalty cards, sponsorship and by making donations. We are incredibly grateful to the generous people who have already purchased a ticket or donated.”

Tickets to the in-house productions and all other shows can be purchased on the website www.NTRLincoln.co.uk or by calling the box office on 01522 519999.

The New Theatre Royal not only welcomes over 280 touring shows a year, it offers venue hire, backstage tours, film screenings and live streaming from the Royal Opera House. The team also put together many in-house productions, which include four Comedy Nights each year, Easter and Christmas Pantomimes and annual Variety Shows. The funds raised through in-house productions will aid the on-going restoration of the building including improving disabled access and amenities for our visitors. The New Theatre Royal has significant architectural merit and is an important heritage asset for the city of Lincoln and its residents. It was built in 1893 and it is

Dinosaur Encounter

Heritage

Visitors to The Collection this summer are invited to step back in time into another world, a land before time, as Dinosaur Encounter, developed and produced by the Natural History Museum, London will be showing at the Lincoln venue from July 13 – September 8. The exhibition features stunning animatronic dinosaur models which, through in-depth research and advanced technology bring new levels of lifelike reality to the models making them as scientifically accurate as possible. There are also replicas of ancient fossils for visitors to study. The star of the show and probably the most famous of them all will be the Tyrannosaurus Rex, which stands at four metres tall and over six metres long, one of the largest land-dwelling meat eaters that ever lived. The exhibition invites intrepid explorers to discover these models that will also include a Triceratops, Baryonyx and an Ankylosaurus. The Collection will be open late every Friday evening until 9pm to greet visitors throughout the period of the exhibition and will be announcing an events programme, including film screening, story time, crafts and trails, nearer the time. The dinosaur shop will be open with selected Jurassic gifts whilst the show is on. “We are delighted to be hosting this exciting exhibition at The Collection which is owned and produced by the Natural History Museum and we hope that our intrepid explorers enjoy an immersive experience and are inspired to learn and discover more about these amazing creatures,” said Andrea Martin,Exhibitions and Interpretations Manager. The exhibition is ticketed and the prices are £7.50 for adults, concession £6.50, child £5 and family (2 + 3) £20. Please see the website for further details www.thecollectionmuseum.com

Heritage

The phrase ‘History lies beneath your feet’ is nowhere more true than in the streets of central Lincoln, writes Nigel Burn chairman of the Society of Lincolnshire History and Archaeology. A Roman civilisation is overlain by Viking and Viking by medieval. We have in our city an unparalleled amount of history of which we should be justly proud. But how much do we really know about the everyday lives of our forebears in the high medieval era, a time when Lincoln was one of the most important cities in England? The cathedral and the castle will come to mind immediately. But these were not part of the City of Lincoln, they were the separate jurisdiction of the king and the Bishop. The jurisdiction of the city only began at the top of what we call the Steep Hill today. In the medieval era our streets had very different names to those which they have today, names which tell of the trades which were practised there and of the many and diverse markets which took place in and around the streets. Thus where Wordsworth Street lies today was the mediaeval fishmarket. Go a little bit further down the hill and you would have the street of the parchment makers going off to one side. On the other side of the road were the bowyers, the makers of bows and arrows for the King’s armies in France, for this was the era of the Hundred Years’ War. Drop down a little further and you will find yourself in the Poultry,, and below that the Cornmarket where you might buy the wherewithal with which to bake your bread. Remember, the potato had not yet been discovered and bread was eaten with most meals. These are only a few of the names of our modern, but ancient streets. The Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology has developed a free guided tour which explores these streets and the trades which were practiced there. It is a tour which is designed to provide an insight into the daily life of our ancient medieval city.

Sport

Lincoln City Foundation Youngsters enjoy a Lincoln City Foundation Holiday Club.

Sport plays a huge part in the lives of people throughout the world and Lincoln is no exception with clubs throughout the area catering for all interests and abilities. It’s a responsibility the club takes seriously, which is why it has agreed to be strategic partner of the Hello Lincoln What’s On Guide in promoting the benefits of sport and information about the city’s clubs and venues. The work of the football club’s official charity partner, the Lincoln City Foundation highlights the Imps’ commitment to the wider community. The Foundation’s vision - Inspiring Lives In Our Communities - sets out the core values and aims, to provide opportunities that inspire individuals to improve their physical, social or well-being through active participation. The Foundation carries out work with the community; engaging with people of all abilities, offering them opportunities and routes through their four key themes; Sport, Education, Health and Inclusion.

“Participation in sport brings many benefits - it improves physical and mental health, provides social interaction, breaks down barriers and brings people together,” said Lincoln City Head of Community Paul Hamnett. The Lincoln City Foundation is more than football. It is about providing opportunities for people, particularly the young, to experience a wide range of sports, such as futsal, rugby, cricket, hockey, basketball, dance and fitness sessions.” The Foundation also promotes key health issues and works strategically with partners in the most challenging areas as they strive to reduce health inequality and encourage healthy eating, and physical activity to reduce obesity.

All of the Foundation’s latest sessions are available on the website www.lcfcset.com, Twitter @LCFCFoundation and Facebook @LincolnCityFoundation.

The new way to up…at your leis Sport

City of Lincoln Council Leisure Centres

Have you been meaning to lose a few inches, increase your fitness levels or just tone up but don’t feel like the gym is right for you? Do you want to be more active and have fun while you’re doing it? If so, the new Shapemaster suite at Active Nation Birchwood may be perfect for you. The new suite provides power-assisted exercise for everybody, irrespective of age, mobility, weight or fitness level. The power assisted machines mean that you don’t have to rely solely on your muscles for the exercise to be effective. Each machine targets different muscle groups. Simply spend a little time on each machine and in just 30 minutes you will begin to feel the results. You work with the machines, not against them. No special shoes or clothing required, come as you are and start shaping up! Shapemaster suites not only offer a great opportunity to exercise, but also to be part of a vibrant social community. Who is the new suite for l Anybody who wants to be more active, increase their fitness or just enjoy sociable, fun exercise. The suite is particularly popular with: l The over 40s – Shapemaster centres provide a vibrant and welcoming environment that is especially popular with those in their 40s and upwards. l The body conscious – creates a comfortable environment which offers a real, less intimidating alternative to the high-energy gym. l Disabled and poor mobility – accessible exercise for those with restricted or poor mobility or those in rehabilitation.

32

l Anyone who wants to try a different and fun way to exercise.

“New visitors to Birchwood Leisure Centre will be amazed at the changes that include a brand new gym, children’s soft-play area, climbing walls, Costa-licenced café and more,” said Active Nation Birchwood Business Manager Roger Michie “The star of the show for many fitness enthusiasts will be the state-of-the-art immersive spin studio, which is one of the first of its kind in the country. Users of the studio will be able to get fit whilst experiencing a virtual world played out in front of them on a giant screen that curves into the room. On rotation will be a range of experiences that include a cycle through the old Wild West, a high-speed chase through a post-apocalyptic city and a futuristic rollercoaster. The hi-tech setup, provided by Les Mills Studio takes its inspiration from computer games, discos and big screen cinemas to provide a real ‘out of this world’ experience. The climbing walls and soft play area are fantastic fun for the little (and not so little) ones who can let off steam while the parents relax and have a drink and something to eat at the new café. Simon Colburn, Assistant Director for Health and Environmental Services for City of Lincoln Council said: “This studio really is a first for Lincoln, and it’s something that not many people will have seen before. The idea of being taken away to another world while you exercise rather than being in a stuffy room with nothing to look at is going to be appealing to people of all ages and abilities.”

Lincoln 10k

It’s the run up (pun intended!) to the Lincoln 10K, one of the biggest and best loved road races in the East Midlands.

This year, we’ll see thousands of runners coming to the city to take part in the race which takes place on Sunday 7 April, 2019. The race is organised on behalf of the City of Lincoln Council by Jane Tomlinson’s Run for All in association with the ASDA Foundation. Why do people choose Lincoln? Just think of the historical landmarks that can be seen on the route and it becomes clear. Starting at Yarborough Leisure Centre, the course goes on to boast an array of beautiful views. Including the Lincoln Cathedral, University Campus and Roman Walls, eventually finishing at the towering Cathedral as you’re then led into Lincoln Castle Square to celebrate your triumph. Aside from the views, the route also offers a fast, flat course giving experienced runners a great chance to gain a personal best. It can also provide a great opportunity to warm-up for the London Marathon or a spring half marathon. But, if running doesn’t pique your interest there will be plenty of people taking part in fancy dress looking to fundraise, or even beginners who are merely seeking a fun and friendly first run.

The race is coming up to its 22rd year as one of the biggest events in the city’s calendar, regularly bringing in runners and spectators from far and wide, as well as introducing people to running for the first time who then take to running frequently - getting healthier and happier in the process.

Karen Bevan from City of Lincoln Council explained: “Many people who run the race have only taken up running to take part in the City of Lincoln 10K, often raising money for a good cause close to their heart.

Active Nation. It includes three age groups: a 1.5k fun run for three to eight- year-olds, a 2.5k fun run for nine to 11 year-olds and a 5k fun run for 11 to 15 year-olds. All children must be registered.

Work is underway to inform runners, spectators, residents and visitors that a number of the city’s roads will be closed or have access restricted during the event to ensure the safety of all those taking part.

“As well as introducing many people to exercise for life, the 10k also brings thousands of visitors into the city. “Having been personally involved with it for many years, it is very satisfying to see it as such a huge success today.” It’s estimated that around 4,000 people will take part in the race, and a further 10,000 supporters who watch and cheer from the side-lines. This creates such a fantastic atmosphere that the country holds it in high esteem, as one runner described it as “Incredible atmosphere, like a smaller version of the Great North Run.” Wow! The Lincoln Mini and Junior Races take place at Yarborough Leisure Centre on Saturday 6 April at 11am, organised on behalf of the city council by

Learning & Culture

For over 150 years Bishop Grosseteste University has been an integral part of Lincoln. Deep in the heart of this historic city, just a few minutes walk from the Castle and Cathedral, it has evolved from humble roots as an Anglican teacher training college into a TEF Gold rated institution and the top university in the East Midlands for widening participation. Beginning life in 1862 as an Anglican teacher training college for women it was renamed Bishop Grosseteste College, in honour of Robert Grosseteste the thirteenth century scientist, philosopher, educator, and Bishop of Lincoln, to mark its centenary in 1962. Over the years it has continued to grow and now, as Bishop Grosseteste University, it educates over 2,000 students in subjects ranging from drama to psychology; foundation degree to PhD, and much more in between. Though much at Bishop Grosseteste University has changed in the course of this progression, its commitment to providing first-class education and turning out graduates of the highest calibre who go out into the world to change people’s lives for the better has never wavered. From their top-of-the-line teaching and study facilities, to their on-site cinema, they’ve worked hard to ensure their beautiful and peaceful campus has everything a student could need to succeed. More importantly, at the heart of all these services, they boast a team of educators and staff dedicated to advancement of their students through academic, professional and emotional support whenever and wherever it might be required.

Developing the skills for success

Lincoln University Technical College

Learning & Culture

Lincoln UTC recognises that academic success and qualifications are important. Good results open doors for students and are the key to future success in industry or at university. It is not unusual in believing this, and if its students went to an ‘ordinary’ school their teachers would almost certainly hold a similar view. A GCSE student will have been in school for eleven years, being told what to do and when to do it. School days will have been broken down into one hour lessons, and most ‘good’ teachers go further and break each lesson down into shorter chunks. A ‘good’ teacher is also attentive and quick to offer help to students who appear to be struggling. “Is it any wonder that some students have short attention spans and limited resilience? Or that they are overly reliant on teachers providing them with the ‘right’ answers? If these are learned behaviours then this is because we have spent years training students to behave this way,” said UTC Principal John Morrison. “With that in mind, this year we introduced a unique initiative, meaning that students spend extended learning sessions completing project work that is designed to develop skills that prepare them for the real world and employment. “We want our students to be creative, curious, logical, ambitious, independent and resilient. Our project programme is carefully planned to give opportunities to put those things into practice.” Projects are carefully chosen to encourage learning that is independent from the teacher. Students are expected to plan and organise their own approaches, and are not spoon-fed or told how to solve the problems they encounter. There is an expectation that students will make mistakes and fail, which will lead to them reflecting, learning, and becoming more resilient. “Through this programme we place an unparalleled emphasis on providing students with opportunities to develop skills, behaviours and traits that set them apart from other young people, and help them to succeed in future. This is just one of the things that sets Lincoln UTC apart from other schools.”

Learning & Culture Igniting the spark at engineering festival Learning

Lincoln’s heritage as a city of engineering is well-known from its involvement in developing the first tanks over a century ago, to the modern day turbines that are powering machines all over the world. The Spark Festival is a celebration of engineering, and is held in the city’s greatest structural feat Lincoln Cathedral. Back for 2019 and bigger than ever, this year’s festival will bethe first to incorporate civil engineering in recognition of the construction of the Lincoln Eastern Bypass.

Learning & Culture

At the last event in 2017 visitors were wowed by a replica DeLorean time machine from the Back to the Future films. This year’s festival is looking like it will be just as exciting, with plenty of interactive demonstrations and stalls from some of the country’s finest engineering companies. Judith Smith, one of the organisers of the Spark Festival, said: “The Spark Festival is a celebration of the past, present and future of engineering, and Lincoln’s proud place in its history. “Our aim is to spark the imagination of our visitors, whether they are lovers of engineering or not. There’s plenty to get involved in and lots to learn, and all of it is completely free of charge.” Lincoln Spark Festival, Saturday – Sunday, May 4-5. Friday, May 3 is reserved for school visits. Hold The Front Page Art Exhibition

Artwork by students from the University of Lincoln can be enjoyed by visitors to Stokes Cafe at the Lawn in Lincoln. Third year Illustration degree students entered a competition to create the front cover of this Hello Lincoln What’s On Guide. The results were displayed in the Courtyard Gallery at The Collection for three weeks in the Hold the Front Page Exhibition and visitors were invited to choose their favourite. Ashton Hinton’s fantastically detailed image was a worthy winner and it will become a familiar sight on 25,000 copies of this magazine. Ashton’s success was all the more significant as it was chosen from some outstanding pieces of art from her course mates.

We have only been able to choose 12 of the other entries to display on this page, but they are indicative of the artistic talent and vibrancy of all the entries. We are delighted that all 45 pieces of art from the exhibtion can now be seen at the Lawn venue and a visit is highly recommended. The prints are for sale as £30 each plus P&P with proceeds being split between the student artists, The Lincoln Arts Trust and next year’s exhibition. Visit the Stop Press section of the website www.bailgateindependent.com where you will be able to see all the images and their creators to choose your print.

Belvoir Fruit Farm Elderflower Cordial

Spring is here and what could be better than refreshing elderflower cordial, served in an ice cool glass? Made with freshly picked blooms and infused with natural lemon juice, there’s nothing more delicious on a warm day in the garden. Belvoir Fruit Farms in Bottesford, near Grantham, has been infusing its famed elderflower cordial for decades, based on a beloved family recipe. Pev Manners is Managing Director of the farm, but it is with his mum, Lady Mary Manners, that the story really begins. ‘There was always a jug on the kitchen table when I was growing up, so it’s a taste of home for me.’ says Pev. The cordial’s fresh delicate flavour was adored by close friends and family. In 1984, this admiration gave Mary’s husband and Pev’s father, Lord John Manners, the idea to start selling it to the public. And 35 years later, it’s being stocked and sold across the country. It’s still a simple combination with just sugar, water, fresh elderflowers, real pressed lemon juice and citric acid. The only change is that rather than infusing the elderflowers in china bowls on the kitchen table, they are steeped in large stainless-steel vats in a specially built “infusing room”. The recipe, however, has remained the same and Pev believes that’s why it has flourished. ‘It’s all about the simplicity of the recipes. We use real fruit juice and real flowers.’ he explained. The elderflowers are harvested from the family farm and Pev has been picking them for as long as he can remember. The month-long harvest normally starts at the end of May, but the weather plays its part. A sunny spring and enough rain to keep the bushes watered but not waterlogged is perfect for plenty of blossom. People come from all over to pick the elderflowers for what will be turned into a traditional taste of Summer. They include families, friends, holiday makers, students and even a regular who makes the journey from Romania each year! From the Manners’ dinner table to kitchen cupboards across the country, the delightful drink has retained its great taste and natural flavour. Why don’t you try some for yourself and wow guests at your next picnic or garden party?

Discover Visit Lincoln’s toolkit to help your business Within its first year of setting up as a Community Interest Company (CIC) Visit Lincoln is set for a record breaking 2019. Since establishing as a CIC in May 2018 the team has seen unprecedented growth across its tourism marketing, digital activity and partnership; combine this with an expansion into a bigger oďŹƒce and turnover increasing by nearly 40% - there is no denying it has been a busy, yet rewarding, 10 months for the team. “This next chapter for Visit Lincoln is among the most exciting,â€? said Chief Executive Lydia Rusling. “We have ambitious plans to continue growing the visitor economy and it is critical that we have a strong foundation, the right team and oďŹƒce base to do this from. “Tourism is worth ÂŁ203 million to the city and ÂŁ1.4billion to Greater

Lincolnshire – having an organisation driving this forwards, attracting more international visitors and working with local businesses and national partners like VisitBritain and VisitEngland is essential. “We started the year with record-breaking traďŹƒc to VisitLincoln.com we are launching the new ‘2019 Discovery’ brand with a business toolkit to attract more visitors and every week we are approached by more businesses wanting to work with us.â€? Visit Lincoln is 90% funded by the private sector, so attracting more partners not only makes it more representative of the business community it serves, but it also means more can be invested in marketing campaigns. “Since I started in 2017 we have seen the number of business partners grow by 48%â€?, continued Lydia. “To maintain delivery and our growth plans we relocated to a bigger oďŹƒce in the North Lodge at Lincoln Castle and welcomed two new people into the team. We’re delighted to have Sammy Pengelly and Megan Johnson as part of Visit Lincoln.â€? In a move which strengthens its working relationship with Lincoln City Council, Sammy has been seconded from the council for a year to cover maternity leave as Projects and Marketing Manager, and having done voluntary work experience since October 2018, Visit Lincoln invited Megan to join the team at the start of February as Marketing Executive. “I’d like to thank everyone who has worked with Visit Lincoln. Especially Lincoln BIG and Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce who played a key role in setting it up and supporting our move to become a CIC last year. Lincoln City Council has shown its commitment with a year secondment and Lincolnshire County Council helped with our move into bigger oďŹƒces at Lincoln Castle.â€?

Shopping & Markets

Revisit city’s vibrant market

Lincoln Central Market is in its 80th year of trading, having been established in 1938. Located in the heart of the city centre it offers an affordable but high-quality range of goods and services to residents and visitors. It is situated by Sincil Street shopping area, adjacent to the Waterside Shopping Centre and a short walk away from the High Street, Lincoln’s new bus station and the Lincoln Central Car Park. The Central Market boasts a handful of hidden gems that might fly under the radar for most, but City of Lincoln Council is looking for new ways to improve the market offer in Lincoln. 2019 will be an exciting year for trying out new things…

supermarket.”

2by2 Pet Supplies: Small business owner Eunice Porters took over 2by2 Pet Supplies from the previous owner in 2010 and prefers the stall over owning a shop. Eunice feels that she’d be rather lonely in a store as a sole trader and self-employed, but the market provides a local community with other market traders and shoppers. Eunice also believes that small businesses offer that little bit extra, compared to High Street stores, whether that be expert knowledge on her products or advice. “I have a lot of customers that come to me who might not buy anything but would just like some advice and I’m always happy to help when I can.” Lincoln Stamp Centre: One of the unique stalls in the Lincoln Central Market is owned by Mike Stone who sells an array of collectable stamps, cigarette cards, coins and post cards. Open for business for eight years, Mike made the move to the market to take advantage of the reasonably priced rent and has been happy to discover the sense of community there. His is the only regularly open stamp shop in Lincolnshire, as lots of people choose to trade from home. Unicorn Tree: Melanie Carroll has a long history with the market as her Mum owned a craft stall when she was young and

53

her Dad was the previous owner of 2by2 Pet Supplies. Unicorn Tree is a book stall which trades in new books and beloved second-hand books, while also dealing in Christian books, church requisites and antiquarian books. Melanie doesn’t consider it a stall but rather a shop. And she added that it’s a very nice community centre to be involved in.

Comic World: Mark Brunton has the latest American imports just as soon as they’re released. The stall has been open since 2011, after Mark made the move from owning a store on West Parade. He has been happy with the move as he considers the market more central for his customers with the benefit of a lot more passing trade. If you’re missing a certain comic Mark will trace it for you; as well as stocking the latest comics. He feels as strongly about his market location as he does his customer service. “I hope that people will continue to support the market in general; it provides a different experience to shopping online or in a

Lincoln’s Cornhill Square is set to get a facelift through the development of a larger community space around the new Cornhill Quarter and an outdoor market offer for the city using all of City Square. The works around the Cornhill Square will include the demolition of the Cornhill Kiosk and improvements to the public realm in order to create an open space for events facing directly onto the High Street. The outdoor market is proposed to extend onto all of City Square to enhance the current market offer in Lincoln. These improvements will form part of City of Lincoln Council’s Vision 2020 to strengthen the vibrancy of the city centre and support the recent development of Lincoln Transport Hub and Lincolnshire Co-operative’s Cornhill Quarter. Kate Ellis, Director of Major Developments at City of Lincoln Council, said: “The city’s new Transport Hub and Cornhill Quarter have already enhanced the gateway to Lincoln, which is why we want to continue this further into some of our other city centre spaces to create a better experience for everyone as they walk through the city. “The removal of the Cornhill Kiosk and adjacent tree will mark the first stage of improvements to create an effective public space for events in the heart of the city, allowing us to better utilise City Square with a robust market offering for traders and visitors alike. “We want to drive the city’s economic growth by providing new opportunities for start-up businesses through a strong and sustainable market in Lincoln, as well as create new retail offers and encourage positive community activity in the area.” The plans were given the go-ahead by council chiefs at a meeting in March.

County’s flagship event still a showstopper

Lincolnshire Show

The Lincolnshire Show is one of the most popular UK county shows and a spectacular celebration of all that’s great about Lincolnshire. Offering a huge variety of spectacular entertainment, food, shopping, education, and a whole host of other things to see and do the Show has remained true to its agricultural roots with machinery and associated trades, as well as equine and livestock classes and competitions. Now in its 135th year and organised by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, the Show has grown to become one of the county’s flagship annual events. Regularly attracting over 60,000 visitors across two days, this year’s event held on Wednesday/Thursday, June 19-20 promises another action-packed line-up with something for everyone to enjoy. “This year is an especially important year for the Show as it celebrates the 150th year of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society,” said CEO Jayne Southall. “The theme is being represented throughout the Show with performances, displays and activities to get involved in, and exhibitors are digging out historical artefacts from Shows gone by to reflect 150 years across the county.” Visitors will be spoilt for choice with a variety of exciting acts, classes and performances in the Main Ring and Countryside Ring, and over in the new Lincolnshire Lifestyle Zone you can browse an array of products from independent Lincolnshire producers. Visitors can even jump aboard the land train to visit the cows, sheep, pigs and an array of new and traditional farm machinery from over the years. The Food Court will be brimming with Lincolnshire produce from hog roasts and sausages to jams, pickles and cakes, and the Lincolnshire Kitchen plays host to some of the finest food producers and chefs from across the county who will demonstrate live their delicious recipes using local produce. And for our younger audience, the Show is packed full of educational stands on food, farming and animals, not least in the Schools Challenge Area. Jayne added: “Whatever you plan to see or do, you’re guaranteed a fun and actionpacked day at the Lincolnshire Show 2019.”
