WELCOME TO LINCOLN Lincolnshire's city is ancient and beautiful, its people down to earth, and yet its architecture reaches for the heavens. I reckon that’s the best of all possible worlds, so I keep returning. In the eighteenth century, fourteen theatres were built in Lincolnshire. The age of public entertainment had truly arrived heralding the travelling circus, and in the Victorian era, tourists by rail. Some railway journeys in the 1930s golden age were fuelled by my great Uncle Jack Luty, who shovelled coal into the boilers of such trains as The Flying Scotsman and Silver Link.

Lincolnshire’s industries created the buildings we now enjoy for recreation. The wealth of its farmland funded Lincoln Cathedral to become the tallest building in the world in 1311; the wool trade built the tallest spire at Louth, and highest tower at Boston and its engineers created the railway to Lincoln Station. It’s always a thrill to arrive watching for the silhouette of that grand old lady on the hill.

So I had the good fortune to be brought up in Lincolnshire: I was schooled here, made my friends and forged my interests. The age of LNER rail was over by then – I had to travel on my own steam, via Shanks’ pony or pushbike, and what I discovered were astonishing buildings of all ages. Architecture became my work and play.

Lincolnshire's city is ancient and beautiful, and its architecture reaches for the heavens. I reckon that’s the best of all possible worlds, so I keep returning. And I bet you'll come back too. Jonathan Foyle Architectural Historian and TV Presenter

Weekend at The Asylum Steampunk Festival: The annual festival transforms Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter into a neo-Victorian futurist extravaganza, August 2019.

THE MAGIC OF VICTORIANA 2019 200 years ago Queen Victoria was born and a new era of Discovery, Showmanship, Circus and Curiosity began which continues to shape the world today. The vibrancy of 21st century Lincoln is evident right across the city. The themes of discovery, innovation and showmanship which were forged in the 18th century are the inspiration for present day events and experiences waiting to be enjoyed. Explore Lincoln Castle to satisfy your own ‘insatiable appetite for the strange and unknown’. For their season launch, the ancient building will host an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ fantasy. During the year the grounds will also welcome a Victorian Gymkhana, a Victorian Circus, the popular Castle Classics; jousting and re-enactments, as well as outdoor cinema and concerts. The Victorian era witnessed an extraordinary century of creativity, curiosity and change; their industrial revolution to our own digital revolution. Boolean algebra, a foundation stone of computational logic, is named after a son of Lincoln, mathematician George Boole. It is only fitting that one of the city’s fastest growing, most innovative biennial celebrations, The Frequency Festival, see opposite page, creates virtual and augmented realities, digital culture, art and debate hosted within the city’s medieval streets. As you savour and make the most of your city break, thank those Victorian reformers who introduced the first Bank Holidays. Trips to the seaside on the newly built railways or charabancs to the countryside were the foundations of our treasured family and leisure time. Be inspired by your visit to Lincoln. STEEPED IN HISTORY, BRIMMING WITH LIFE Wherever you stroll in the Cathedral Quarter, your footsteps will retrace those of Romans, Vikings, Normans, Georgians and Victorians; traders, knights, soldiers, prisoners and law makers who lived and worked in the city.

Facing Lincoln’s magnificent gothic Cathedral, across the cobbled Castle Square, is Lincoln Castle built in the early 11th century. The Castle has its own connection to the Mayflower Pilgrims’ story, which will mark its 400th anniversary in 2020. William Brewster was tried at the Lincoln Assize Court before sailing to America in 1620. Step inside the castle to see a world class visitor attraction exhibiting Lincoln Cathedral’s copy of Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest within a specially built vault. Anticipate your visit or be transported to inaccessible places across the city with the recently launched augmented reality (AR) App (see page 24). Using the new ‘England Originals’ AR App, let the famous Lincolnshire botanist and explorer Sir Joseph Banks guide you around Lincoln Cathedral, or bring a 3D map of the city into your home with a tabletop tour, helping you see the streetscape of Lincoln before your visit.
